Shock threat of strikes called off by airports’ ground staff

TENERIFE’S tourism and airport chiefs breathed a huge sigh of relief on Tuesday when two one-day strikes planned for this month were called off. Despite strike denials last week by AENA, which controls all Spanish airports, up to 60,000 ground staff were preparing to stage the 24-hour walk-outs. But the three main unions involved agreed to abandon the protest by baggage handlers and other ground staff, sched-

uled for Thursday (18th August) and the following Friday at all Spanish airports, including those in the Canaries. Tenerife’s South and North airports would have been devastated had the walk-outs gone ahead - as would the Tourist Board (Tenerife Turismo), during what is regarded as the busiest month of the year for receiving holiday-makers. It would have caused havoc for thousands of British tourists, making the most of the school summer holidays - especially with this week’s terrifying riots plaguing the UK. To make matters worse, Thurs-

day’s strike would have coincided with the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI in Madrid for World Youth Day celebrations. The proposed strikes were sparked partly by the decision of private company WFS at Barcelona’s El Prat airport to lay off four workers. A union spokesman said: “When WFS took over the handling contract at the airport, they guaranteed there would be no redundancies. Then, shortly afterwards, they made four people redundant, which was unacceptable. “For us, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. We’ve

been trying to sit down with the company since 4th July without success. Industrial action is our only option.” Three of the sacked staff were later rehired by WFS, but the unions called the action in support of the fourth worker, who has since been reinstated. There were other unresolved issues contributing to the strikes, but these problems were said to have been resolved during Tuesday’s meeting between the leading unions CCOO, UGT and USO, AENA and the employers’ association ASEATA. But news of the impending strike had come as an almighty shock to the airport authority,

which told Canarian Weekly last week in response to a misleading Daily Express strike story: “We settled our differences with the unions back in March and no disruptions to flights have been planned, or even talked about.” Generally, tens of thousands of tourists pass through Spanish airports daily, with almost six million visitors in the first six months of this year, and 1.5 million in June alone. And with the collapse of the building industry, which led to the start of recession throughout Spain three years ago, the tourism sector has been relied on to boost trading figures, es-

pecially in the Canary Islands. Tenerife would have felt the pinch as much, if not more, than any other area because the number of holiday-makers here has shown a marked improvement this year following a nightmare 2010. In fact, the eight Canary Islands’ airports reported a total of three million-plus passengers last month, which was an impressive 11.3% up from last year. And the largest increase was recorded by Tenerife South with a near-18% improvement, taking the total to in excess of 709,000 passengers, against last year’s figures.

Top beach volleyball stars in Adeje showdown for Games SPAIN’S beach volleyball stars, male and female, will be battling it out against various nations in Adeje for an elite place in next year’s London Olympics. The Continental Cup Canary Islands’ tournament takes place from 30th Sept-2nd Oct at Playa Fanabe, featuring Europe’s top teams who have spent three years qualifying for the event. This prestigious showdown is a collaboration between the sport’s International Federation, the European Confederation and the Royal Spanish Federation. The winners of each category will compete in the Grand Final, which guarantees their entry to the Olympics. As well as Spain, the field features national teams from Germany, Italy, Norway, Czech Republic, Austria, Serbia and Slovakia.

The Adeje tournament was launched officially last Friday at Adeje’s Cultural Centre, when guest speakers among an array of dignitaries present included José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Mayor of Adeje, and María del Cristo Pérez, Tenerife Sports Minister. Spain have two teams in both sections. Representing the men are Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira, who won the Tenerife Championship Cup last year and are ranked third in the world, plus Raúl Mesa and Inocencio Lario. Herrera, 28, played for Spain in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won a silver medal at the Athens Games four years earlier. Not surprisingly, he is considered to be the finest Spanish player in history, and is rated by some as the current best in the world. Tenerife’s Mesa, also 28, won the Open European Tour in Spain in 2008 and was also Absolute Champion of Europe. He actually won the world Under-21 title in 2002 alongside Herrera.

Mesa’s 26-year-old teammate, Lario, moved to the Island seven years ago, having also won the Under-21 world title with another partner in 2004. The leading Spanish women’s team are 23-year-olds Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Steiner, who both studied in Tenerife and also live here. They are considered to be Spain’s greatest team ever. Steiner studied tourism at the University of La Laguna, and Baquerizo also studied in Tenerife. They started the season in a lowly134th on world rankings but have

12 August 2011 - 18 August 2011

since forced their way into the top 25. No other Spanish couple have ever achieved such a position. Nadia Campisi and Cristina Hopf make up the other Spanish team, and all the girls will face strong opposition because Germany’s Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig won last year’s Tenerife Championship Cup. They also have several European Championships to their credit. Beach volleyball, played by teams of two players on a sand court, has been an Olympic sport for several years. It began in southern California

and Hawaii and is now popular the world over. Even countries like Switzerland, which do not have traditional beaches, have been gripped by the sport. And the London Games has already had tons of sand transported into the capital for the event, which is taking place at Horse Guards Parade. In fact, there is a women’s international “test” event, featuring the American world champions, being staged there right now to ensure that conditions are perfect for The Games.

A Word from Canary Islands on red alert our editor Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Mr Men celebrate four decades of reading fun In a week of doom and gloom there was a light hearted story about the Mr Men books that we all read when we were younger. Ironic really as they are so far removed from the social media networks of today which seem to be fuelling the current unrest. This week the Mr Men franchise is 40 years old - and still sells a copy every 27 seconds. The creator, Roger Hargreaves, died in 1988 yet he remains the third most successful author of the last decade behind JK Rowling and Dan Brown.

The one-off stories have now been translated into 15 languages and Adam adds that he thinks their success is down to the simplicity of the characters and the tales. "They are wonderful and simple and that's what my dad was striving for. "Even the shape and the size of the books were designed so that a child could hold them. "My dad took essentially parts of beings and created the characters - that's why

High temperatures, low humidity and strong winds have increased the possibility of forest fires in the South of the Canaries. The General Director of the Civil Protection has advised the highest risk level – red of forest fires in the Canaries. The combination of temperatures above 30 degrees with winds over 30 mph and humidity indicators below 30% converted to areas that face south of the islands on fertile ground may trigger a fire. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) have said that the risk will lessen over the coming days and is less threatening on the Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The Canary Islands are not alone areas of mainland Spain are on high alert, Galicia, Extremadura and Andalusia. The rest of the country is on a medium riskhigh (orange to yellow), with

more danger in the case of Mallorca and Menorca, Murcia, La Rioja, Basque Country, Huesca and virtually all of Castile and Leon. As usual the authorities advise no fires, and

to be very careful with discarded cigarettes, rubbish and glass bottles. They also advise not to go out during the middle of the day unless imperative. It also recommends limiting

exposure to sun, stay in wellventilated, light meals and drink regular water and rich in minerals, drinking plenty of water or fluids, and avoid prolonged physical exercise in the middle of the day.

Orizonia’s summer spree has flight seats galore to Tenerife Over the last ten years his books, which include both the Mr Men and Little Miss series, have sold over 11,600,000 copies. Hargreaves started writing the series in 1971 when his sixyear-old son Adam asked him what a tickle looked like. Adam took over the business from his dad following his death. He said his dad would be amazed that the idea turned into a global brand and lasted so long. "I think he originally saw them as individual characters and stories rather than being part of a whole series. "So I think the whole idea of Mr. Men and evolving into a brand was something that wasn't there at the beginning. They were just one-off stories."

Page 4

everyone recognises parts of themselves in them." In 2008 the family sold the rights to the Mr. Men series to entertainment group Chorion in a deal worth £28m. Rick McShane from Waterstone's bookshop told Sky News: "The first thing that's brilliant is that there are two children's authors in the top three. "Kids' literacy and getting kids to read has become incredibly important over the last few years. "What you've got with Roger is someone that starts children reading from a young age. "You have their parents reading to them and then the children use the books themselves in their first steps of reading alone."

ORIZONIA, one of the most important national tour operators in Spain, is offering 105,000 flight seats to Tenerife this summer. Orbest, the national airline attached to Orizonia, flies into the Island’s North airport from most mainland airports, as well as from Lisbon and Oporto in Portugal.. Carlos Alonso, the Government’s chief executive of Tourism, said: “It is a significant number of seats, which shows the strong commitment of this and other major tour operators towards Tenerife as a holiday destination. “And in a market which attracted nearly 1½ million domestic travellers last year, it means that almost one in every three tourists here in Tenerife was Spanish.” According to Orizonia’ summer programme, including Orbest airlines (which operates some of its flights with Air Europa), Tenerife North airport is connected to cities like Malaga, León, Sevilla, Pamplona, Granada, Vigo, Valladolid and Zaragoza, among others. Alonso and Miguel Angel Santos, CEO of Tourism of

Tenerife, last week held meetings in Madrid with the heads of national tour operators. And when they met with the Orizonia directors, including chief executive José Duato, officials learned of the anticipated increase in flights with this group from various Spanish provinces to Tenerife, in addition to the possible acquisition of hotels on the Island.

Rafa out of Montreal after round 2 shock SPAIN’S Rafa Nadal is already out of Montreal in just two rounds, following an unexpected defeat at the hands of Croatia’s Ivan Dodig.

Favourite Rafa wiped the floor with Dodig in the first set and in a record time, winning by 1-6 – but his Zaghreb-born rival suddenly rose to the challenge and fought for every stroke in the second set, which ended in a tie-break won by Dodig by 7-6(5). With 11 direct serves – out of the 19 he gained during the match as a whole - and capitalising on Rafa’s increasingly-frequent mistakes, Dodig once again forced a 6-6 tie which ended set three with a score of 7-6(5) to the latter. The game was hard fought lasting a gruelling three hours and eight minutes, Dodig’s victory was a turn-up for the books given that the last time he and Rafa had played each other, in the Barcelona Masters 500 semi-finals, the

Mallorca-born world number two beat him by a comfortable 6-2 and 6-3. Spain’s luck appears to be running out at this edition of the Montreal Masters 1000, since Fernando Ver-

News in Brief Tourism chief is aiming high

Candelaria 2011

RAFAEL DOLADO, Adeje’s new Councillor of Tourism, says his priority for the coming months will be to attract airlines back to the South airport by proposing a reduction in airport taxes and charges. They are much higher than those at the North airport, and Dolado is already negotiating with Iberia and Spanair.

Port victory for Greens GREEN campaigners here are celebrating the recent European Court decision not go ahead with the controversial new port in Granadilla. The court ruled that it would cause environmental damage, and it is investigating allegations that authorities retained information suggesting alternatives.

House sales fall again figures from the National Statistics Institute show the number of house sales in Spain in June fell by 22.9% compared to the same month last year. It’s the fourth consecutive month to show a fall and saw

28,612 properties changing hands. It seems even the lower prices are still not stimulating the overall property market. Over the first six months of the year only 207,235 properties were sold.

The safest beach around PLAYA de la Arena beach has introduced advanced safety measures, coinciding with its recent Blue Flag award. Water bikes for emergencies, specially-designed stretchers and portable machines for life-threatening situations are now in place to make the beach one of the safest in the South.

CAM Director is suspended THE Bank of Spain has suspended the Director of the CAM, the savings bank which the Bank of Spain intervened in last month. María Dolores Amorós will continue to be paid during the suspension, and a replacement for her is yet to be named. She has been in the post since Dec 10 2010.

Spanish Gold reserves THE German idea that Spain and Italy should sell their gold has been described by Spanish Minister for Tax and the Economy, Elena Salgado, as ‘a silly and an unfortunate idea’. She said that selling the Spanish gold reserves will not affect the debt level, and would depreciate the value of the metal which has risen over the crisis.

Passenger figures increase Passenger numbers at AENA airports in Spain were up by almost 8% in the first six months of the year. The number of passengers in the year to July was 117 million. However it should be borne in mind that last year at that time

traffic was disrupted by the Icelandic volcanic eruption. In July passenger numbers were 22.6 million, up 6.7% compared to last year. There has been a 3.4% growth in freight comparing the first seven months of the year.

Monday 15th August, is a fiesta day with many celebrating the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the archipelago. 250,000 people from all over the islands and mainland are expected to descend upon the tiny village of Candelaria on Tenerife’s east coast.

The principal stops of their pilgrimage will be the Basilica of Candelaria and Cueva de Achbinico, many will make the journey on foot, following in the footsteps of the Virgin of Candelaria. The traditional routes of pilgrimage to Candelaria pass both natural as urban areas, there will be increased traffic flow during this weekend.

Consequently, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, in collaboration with Candelaria has developed a guide in order to prevent incidents and injuries to hikers that day with different routes established. Loo-roll firm hoping to clean up during Pope’s Madrid visit A COMPANY’S moneymaking scheme to honour Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Madrid next week is certainly not to be sniffed at! Renova, a Portugese firm which manufactures household paper products throughout Europe, has introduced a loo roll in the colours of the Vatican flag to celebrate his appearance there. Each pack contains two perfumed rolls of toilet pa-

per, one yellow and the other white, which, says the company, can be utilised as giant streamers to welcome the 84-year-old pontiff to Madrid. “Is there any better way to liven up the streets than using these large streamers with the Vaticans colourscheme? Open your windows to celebrate! Welcome Pope Benedict!” the company says on its website. The online firm has produced 10,000 packs, which will sell at 2.76 euros, and

the loo rolls also feature an “I Love the Pope” logo using a red heart. Renova marketing director Luis Saramago said: “It is our way to contribute to the joy which will certainly be associated to this event.” The Pope arrives in Madrid on Thursday to attend the last four days of the six-day World Youth Day celebrations. More than one million youngsters are expected to flock to the Spanish capital for the Roman Catholic

Church’s youth festivities. But nearly 150 groups opposing Pope Benedict’s visit, including feminist and gay organisations, plan a mass protest on Wednesday, the day before he lands. Renova, based about 60 miles away from Lisbon, has a history of introducing novelty household products. In the past, it has produced such items as toilet paper with moisturising lotion, multi-coloured paper towels and black loo rolls.

Live Arico Our thanks to...

All involved in our fund-raiser at Legends Bar, Costa Mar, Los Cristianos, where we raised 190 euros on 20th July. Our policy is to ask for a minimum 70-euro donation for an adopted dog, which is paid direct to Hospivet Sur on collection of your new pet, which will be chipped, vaccinated with anti-rabies and V7 vaccine, and issued with a passport. From this sum, a small proportion is used to reduce our debt with Hospivet. If your pet has already been vaccinated, or chipped, we still charge the full amount, which means a larger sum is paid off our account. This is in line with other refuges, who charge an adoption fee. Hospivet also offer flea and worm treatments from 11 euros for a month’s cover of Advocate, and will discuss neutering and spaying options with you. We highly recommend this surgery, whose staff work tirelessly for Live Arico at hugely-discounted rates, and we cannot praise their dedication to our animals enough. Lions are just the ticket for their needy families THE Santiago del Teide Lions Club, mindful of the hardships being suffered by the unemployed in their area, have designed 10-euro food vouchers. These are being distributed by the local Social Services to between 40-50 needy families in Santiago del Teide. The vouchers, strictly for buying necessary food items only, such as toiletries and fresh fruit and veg, and NOT alcohol or cigarettes, are recognised by the Transito Supermarket chain, and the local Supermercado El Valle.

Lions’ members hold weekly quizzes at the El Marques time-share resort, to raise the money, to redeem the vouchers. So far, a total of over 3,000 euros has been raised and spent, helping to alleviate the pressures of those in financial distress. Cicci on fire

www.canarianweekly.com

LAST Friday 5th a small pleasure craft, called Cicci, carrying six passengers, caught fire off the south coast of Tenerife, not long after leaving Puerto Colon at approximately mid-day.

Puerto Colon, is located in the municipality of Adeje. The ‘port’ as locals call it is one of the principle Marina's on the south of the island. It is a popular centre for diving, fishing and boat excursions, (e.g whale and dolphin viewing) with both residents and tourists alike, especially at this time of year. It is believed that the fibre glass boat, owned by an Italian family got into difficulties when a fire broke out onboard. Its crew and passengers were rescued by boats nearby.

Waiting list for the Santa Cruz market The popular Sunday market ‘rastro’ is becoming so popular that there is now a waiting list of over 200 stall holders in Santa Cruz. The president of the group, Carmen Tejera, has no hesitation in pointing out that the reason for this high demand is none other than the economic crisis. Since 2010 the waiting list has increased to the point that currently there are no spaces available. "Every day we receive more requests from people who are unemployed or who previously had a store and have

been forced to close by the crisis. The situation is serious," said the president. "We have a physical boundary and can not expand due to residents and noise constraints.” Tejera said, “at present the popular market in the capital is occupied by 700 stallholders who have found this space as a place to sell their goods.” Indeed, the Trade Federation Canaria (FedEx) has filed a brief with the City Council demanding that the site complies with the ordinance prepared by the Planning Department to regulate this activity.

WWW is 20 years old Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the World Wide Web becoming a publicly available service on the internet. While many people use the terms web and internet interchangeably, they are in fact different services. On August 6 1991, Tim Berners-Lee (now Sir), posted a short summary of the World Wide Web project on the alt.hypertext newsgroup. The message read: "The WWW project aims to allow all links to be made to any information anywhere." Previously the web was used to allow physicists at the CERN physics laboratory to share data, news and documentation, but Berners-Lee's post released the technology to the general public. By making the web openly available and royalty free, it quickly advanced to a glob-

Page 8

ally used service, no longer the secret of the technologically minded. In the 20 years that followed, the web has become a daily part of modern life. The late 1990s and 2000s saw the boom and subsequent bust of dot-com businesses. Sites such as Amazon and eBay were some of the few to survive. Since then, the web has grown further and is now included on most new phones and televisions. The ability to access email and other web services through mobile phones has proved unbelievably successful, with many now addicted to their smart phones. In 2008 mobile access to the web exceeded desktopcomputer-based access for the first time. Professor John Domingue of the Open University predicted the future of the web when speaking to Sky News: "I see a number of trends

and influences in the future of the web. "Five billion people are on the web on mobile devices, the dominant device will be the smart phone rather than the laptop." Professor Domingue also warned of the dangers in the fast advancing web services: "One problem that may arise in the future of the web will be privacy.

"This is already a problem for a number of sites that will only worsen as technology advances." However, the consensus appears to be that the only way forward for the web is upwards. Sir Berners-Lee may never have guessed what would become of the message he posted on a forum 20 years ago.

Simple device helps detect defects in babies´ hearts Experts are calling for a simple piece of equipment that has been in most hospitals for years to be used on all newborn babies to help detect life-threatening heart defects.

Film studio announces Dirty Dancing remake Dirty Dancing, the 1980s blockbuster starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, is coming back to the big screen.

Hollywood film studio Lionsgate says it is remaking the 1987 film about a naive dance student and her teacher who becomes her lover. It has been confirmed that Kenny Ortega, who choreo-

graphed the original film, will direct the remake. Ortega also directed the Michael Jackson movie This Is It and High School Musical. "Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him," Ortega said in a statement. "I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there and I can't wait to begin the pro-

cess of discovering the next breakout triple-threats." Dirty Dancing won Oscars for best music and best original song for its emotional closing song, (I've Had) The Time of My Life, and inspired a hit stage show in London and six other countries. A much-delayed remake of the 1984 film Footloose - starring newcomer Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough is due in cinemas in October.

A major trial conducted in British hospitals has discovered that using pulse oximeters, a device which measures blood oxygen levels, dramatically increases the chance of identifying major heart faults. The simple, pain-free test has a detection rate of 92% when combined with traditional baby checks. Every year in Britain more than 5,000 babies are born with heart defects and, in the developed world, they are one of the leading causes of infant deaths. Lead investigator Dr Andrew Ewer, from the University of Birmingham, told Sky News: "In the Birmingham Women's Hospital, it's routine for babies to go home when they're six hours or even four hours of age. "At that time, often the signs of congenital heart defects are not apparent even after careful examination. "This test will identify babies who have got a problem before they go home, so that they don't become unwell at home -

we can then initiate treatment straight away." The pulse oximetry test was trialled for nearly a year in six UK maternity units. More than 20,000 apparently healthy babies were tested. The new method detected 75% of critical cases and 49% of all major congenital heart defects. When pulse oximetry was combined with routine ultrasound checks and a physical examination, 92% of defects were discovered and, crucially, no babies died from undiagnosed heart disease. During the trial, 53 cases of major congenital heart disease were detected - 18 of them were identified by pulse oximetry but had not been picked up by ultrasound. Doctors at the Birmingham Women's Hospital were so convinced by the results, they carried on doing the blood oxygen tests even after the study ended. New mum Esther Ullah said she was glad her two-day-old

daughter Athena was tested. She said: "It's pain free for the baby, it doesn't take very long and, obviously, it picks up any abnormalities in the heart, which is something you'd obviously want to know if it was there." The blood oxygen test uses a sensor placed on the baby's hand and foot, and it helps to detect more congenital heart defects than any other procedures currently being used. This is not the first time pulse oximeters have been trialled to increase heart defect detection rates but, unlike the latest research, previous studies were on a relatively small scale. As pulse oximeters have been in use for some time and they are not expensive. Experts say they are convinced the device makes a real difference when detecting life-threatening conditions. The NHS is studying the latest results before deciding whether to recommend routine use of blood oxygen tests on all newborn babies in the UK.

Gold even more files on UFO sightings precious now ... GOLD soared to a record high this week as panicky investors sparked the biggest rally in the price since the height of the 2008 banking crisis.

Page 10

The precious metal hit a record peak of $1.778 an ounce on Tuesday, amid mounting fears of double-dip recessions in Europe and the US. The price of gold, once regarded as a safe harbour

during economic storms, climbed by more than 7% in just three days during this week. In addition, the American dollar fell against the Swiss franc and Japanese yen following major concerns that the US could default on its debt. And a downgrading of the Greece bond ratings triggered a flight to safe-haven investments. It means that for the first time since late 2008, gold now costs more than platinum. Experts predict that the price of bullion is likely to continue its climb in the next few months as the European and US worries show little sign of abating. Analysts at Wall Street giant JP Morgan are predicting that gold will reach $2,500 an ounce by Christmas.

UFO sightings of mysterious lights over Glastonbury and a "flying saucer" outside Retford town hall have been revealed in Ministry of Defence files.

The images were sent to the Defence Geographic and Imagery Intelligence Agency (DGIA) in July 2004. Experts examined the photos, including the image of a "flying saucer" taken outside Retford town hall in Nottinghamshire. The DGIA report stated: "No definitive conclusions can be gathered from evidence submitted. "However, it may be coincidental that the illuminated plane of the object passes through the centre of the frame, indicating a possible lens anomaly, eg a droplet of moisture." Another report describes mysterious lights seen moving 300ft above the Pyramid stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2003. Other 2003 sightings of "worm-shaped" UFOs "wriggling around in the sky" were reported over East Dulwich in London. The report of the sighting, filed by a mother and daughter,

also claimed two police constables who attended the scene in East Dulwich were joined by two men dressed in "space suits and dark glasses who called themselves Mork and Mindy". However, police told the MoD they sent two ordinary PCs to the address but they could not see anything in the sky and concluded it was possibly a reflection of a star and a street light in her window. Retired RAF fighter controller Freddie Wimbledon and retired MoD official Ralph Noyes also submitted testimonials recalling a UFO incident in 1956 at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. Mr Wimbledon remembers the "RAF scrambling fighter planes to intercept a UFO seen on radar and by observers on the ground".

The UFO reportedly latched onto to a fighter plane, "following its every move" before speeding off at "terrific speed". Staff involved were sworn to secrecy, while Mr Noyes recalls being shown gun camera footage of the UFOs taken from aboard the aircraft at a special MoD screening in 1970. There were also a number of sightings reported during the summer of 2006, that describe formations of orange lights in the sky. These appear to be observations of Chinese lanterns, released at parties and public events, the experts concluded. Other incidents include UFOs spotted by the pilot and passengers of an aircraft over the Channel Islands in 2007.

First UK centre open for gaming addicts The video games industry is one of the fastest growing entertainment sectors in the UK but there are fears that video game addiction is on the increase. The father of a 20yr old man who died after a marathon video games session is campaigning for more awareness about the risks of excessive gaming. David Staniforth told Sky News: "People need to be made aware. This business has ramped up so quickly. "The industry needs to get on board and make changes before more disasters happen." Chris Staniforth died of a blood clot in May this year after playing on his Xbox for up to 12 hours at a time. He had developed deep vein thrombosis, which is caused by sitting in the same position for long periods. His father added: "If you consider a lot of his friends were playing in Canada and America which is a 5 hour

Student arrested after headteacher is found murdered time difference - he could start playing at 10pm UK time and they were only just starting to come online. "So the game extended right into 7 o'clock in morning. That's like 7,8,9 hours. It was like doing a long-haul flight every night." Brian Dudley is Chief Executive at Broadway Lodge - the UK's first rehabilitation clinic to treat video game addiction. "We know there is a problem because of the number of people contacting us. We've

found that it's very similar to the other type of addictions in that there's social exclusion and there's a breakdown within the families. "There are some heath issues - they don't tend to eat properly. They don't tend to look after themselves from a personal hygiene issue and they isolate as well." The UK Association for Interactive Entertainment (UKIE) is a trade body for the industry. Although it's a small percentage of gamers dealing

with addiction UKIE chairman Andy Payne says he thinks it's important to engage with consumers and centres like Broadway Lodge in order to address the situation. "There is an issue. The poor man who passed away... it's just tragic. That's real. I think the support centres are going to set up their business and they are going to serve a need. "And it's for us to engage with organisations like that and to encompass them and help them as much as we can."

A 17-year-old student has been taken into police custody accused of murdering the headteacher of a Christian school in the US. Suzette York, 49, was found dead in a classroom of the Memphis Junior Academy in Tennessee - a school with 64 pupils affiliated to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Local media reported she had been stabbed, although police would not confirm how she was killed. She had taught at the school in the 1990s before leaving to

work in Canada and returned as the head in 2008. Police said the student was taken into custody after he was found "on the scene" when officers arrived. Martin Lowman, communications director for the Seventh-day Adventist Kentucky-Tennessee Conference, said he was "shocked and saddened" by Ms York's death. "You do not expect these kinds of things to happen, especially in a Christian school," he said. "But we're all human, and they do." Arrangements have been made for students and staff to receive counselling when they return to school.

Planet of the Apes star Council-owned cinemas on role as King Chimp and golf clubs revealed Councils have been told to disclose their assets as it emerges cinemas, golf courses and nightclubs are owned by the public sector.

Actor Andy Serkis has told Sky News that learning to be an ape for his new film was no different to playing Gollum in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Serkis takes on the role of chimpanzee Caesar in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes - the prequel to the 1968 classic. He said, despite coaching, he approached the role in much the same way as his previous roles. "We had a fantastic movement coach who taught us how to be chimpanzees, apes or Orangutans, but for me it was different. "I had to do all the preparatory work and observation and the physicality but there's only so much generic movement that's useful and then it's all about character and personality and emotionally involving yourself in who this person/ape is‌. The film, which opened No 1 in the US and Canada and took $54m in its opening weekend, used 150 apes in total - most of which

Page 12

were played by stunt men. However, the 12 main ape characters were actors. The film tells the story of a scientist played by James Franco who experiments with genetic engineering to cure his father from Alzheimer's. He creates a drug which results in heightened intelligence in the apes he was testing on and it turns into a war for supremacy. As an early supporter of the filming technique performance capture, Serkis embraced the new technology used to make this movie, which it is claimed is more impressive that the gadgetry first seen in

James Cameron's Avatar. He said: "The main ape characters were played by actors who wore full body suits with lights sensors which were picked up by cameras around the location. "What we were doing was very different to the previous films that have used this technology as we were shooting in a street in broad daylight, so you have to rig these cameras to the trees. "It's a big deal. On top of that, each actor wears a helmet and has a face capture camera pointing towards his face and this camera picks up every aspect of their facial expression."

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said many taxpayers were unaware of the "sheer scale and scope" of publiclyowned assets. He argues publishing the lists will make it easier for public bodies to identify savings and believes ÂŁ35bn could be saved over the next decade through better property management. But many councils say owning land and property helps them generate income. The assets are worth an estimated ÂŁ385bn and twothirds are owned by local authorities, according to official figures. They include approximately 130 cafes and restaurants, 100 pubs, 60 theatres, 40 hotels and 20 cinemas. Golf clubs, sports stadia and horse riding centres are also listed.

Bristol city council owns a range of cafes and restaurants, a nightclub, more than 25 pubs and a town centre branch of Primark, according to the Department for Communities and Local Government. Hertfordshire county council, Wirral and Leeds all own golf courses and Swindon owns a Holiday Inn hotel, two betting shops and a nightclub called Gangsters. The decision to release details of 180,000 assets can be seen as a warning shot to local authorities that they may not win public sympathy if they claim they are struggling to cut costs while holding onto valuable land. This move is part of the war of words with the opposition - as some Labour councils say they are being hit hardest by the cuts and may be forced to close front-line services. Jack Dromey, the shadow local government minister, said he agreed councils have a duty to tackle waste and make sure assets deliver value for money. "However, nothing should deflect from the fact that the size and speed of the

Tory-led government's decision to hit councils with deliberately frontloaded cuts has seen frontline services lost, cuts to charities and the voluntary sector and local jobs lost," he said. But Mr Pickles told Sky News local authorities should consider sharing buildings or at least be up front about what they own. David Lloyd from Hertfordshire County Council said assets were monitored to ensure they offer a good deal for taxpayers. "The stables and golf courses are part of our rural estate," he said in a statement. "We have a duty to keep sections of Hertfordshire's greenbelt free from development so we continue to hold these assets in order to fulfil this duty. "In addition, the stables and golf courses are leased out and this generates an annual income for the council," he added. A spokesman for the Local Government Association said the biggest public sector savings will come from Whitehall examining its own assets.

Sorry Connie loses her sound of music

Honeymoon murder: Now Dewani 'can be extradited' A British businessman accused of murdering his wife on honeymoon can be extradited to stand trial in South Africa, a judge has said. Shrien Dewani is now expected to face charges he ordered the death of Anni Dewani - although Home Secretary Theresa May will make the final decision on his extradition. The decision by District Judge Howard Riddle - made after retiring almost three weeks ago to consider the case - was welcomed by Mrs Dewani's family. Mr Dewani is accused of ordering the car-jacking and shooting which left his 28-year-old spouse dead in a Cape Town taxi last November. He denies any involvement and has fought extradition proceedings, arguing he is suffering from severe posttraumatic stress disorder and

is too unwell to be extradited. The legal team defending the 31-year-old, who says he was released unharmed by the raiders, also argued conditions in South African custody could contravene his human rights. Sitting at Belmarsh Magistrates' Court, the judge said the "court must consider the strong public interest in honouring our extradition treaty". He said he had "no doubt" that Dewani is suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, and is at high risk of suicide or self-harm. But he said he was satisfied he would receive the appropriate levels of mental health care at the hands of the South African authorities. The court heard evidence relating to serious problems with overcrowding, violence and sexual violence in South African jails. And the judge said Dewani, whom he described as "good-looking, youthful and physically well-preserved",

would be particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse. He added: "There has been some suggestion that he may be gay." He said many prisons were ill-equipped to deal with the mentally ill and that inmates risked contracting HIV or Aids. But he concluded he was satisfied Dewani would be held in a prison with a good level of facilities and be kept in a single cell. Anni's parents, Vinod and Nilam Hindocha, described the decision as "one step to closure". Vinod said: "I would like to thank the British justice system for the decision, which I believe is a fair one." He said it was not about Dewani, but "it's about my beautiful daughter Anni, not forgetting her". "I'm sure she'd be very, very happy today to hear the decision. I wish Shrien a very speedy recovery so he can now go to Cape Town and help the police and clear his name."

FORMER talent-show winner Connie Fisher, once a major West End attraction, has been forced to quit professional singing altogether. The former call-centre worker, who has a severe throat problem, was scheduled to start touring the UK with the show later this month. Connie triumphed in the 2006 BBC1 talent contest How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? to land the lead role of Maria in the stage musical The Sound of Music at the London Palladium. But the 28-year-old soprano, who grew up in Wales, had to drop out following a long-running battle with congenital sulcus vocalis, a throat condition which forced her to have corrective surgery on

her vocal cords in 2009. By coincidence, her ordeal is similar to that of Julie Andrews, who played the part of Maria in the Academy Awardwinning 1965 film. Julie, now a Dame, lost her singing voice in 1997 after surgery to remove noncancerous nodules from her throat. Connie has been forced her to retire from The Sound of Music for good, saying: “After many months of battling with a throat condition known as congenital sulcus vocalis, my vocal range has altered dramatically. “It is with much regret that I have to withdraw from the touring show as I no longer have the range to sing the part of Maria. “My journey with this amazing show has been magical and I am devastated that I am not able to close the tour.” Connie had to call off a 14-

date Secret Love UK tour in 2009 to have immediate surgery on her vocal cords. Specialists in the US advised her to act after diagnosing throat anomalies. Doctors said it was a “miracle” she was able to launch a singing career with a throat condition which would have been present from birth. Connie, booked to play Maria in Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle and Wimbledon until the end of October, will be replaced by actress Verity Rushworth, who previously appeared in Emmerdale. Connie was earning £150 a week working in a call centre when she won the Maria role and, after her glory days on stage, she will now concentrate on her TV career. At the moment, she presents a Saturday radio show on BBC Wales, and the BBC talent show Singer of the World.

Forget Kilimanjaro - Wales hits the heights! ONE of Britain’s most dramatic coastlines has been listed among the world’s top walks featured in a new guide.

Pembrokeshire’s 186-mile Coastal Path, in West Wales, has been listed by online travel advisers Cheapflights above such famous hikes as the Inca Trail and Mount Kilimanjaro. The frequently wet-andwindy Welsh coastline, in the top 10 at No3, is the only British entry in the list, which includes walks as far away as China, New Zealand and the US. Pembrokeshire’s picturesque path, which is the only coastal National Park in the UK - takes in towering limestone cliffs and

stunning sandy beaches, as well as traditional fishing villages. With its hidden coves and offshore islands, it truly is a wonder of nature, providing some of Britain’s best wildlife habitats on its journey from St Dogmaels in the north to Amroth in the south. Numerous seabirds, including puffins, make their nests on land, while whales, dolphins and porpoises are frequent visitors out at sea. The area is also home to several colonies of grey seals, with hundreds of pups born each autumn. The worldwide list warns walkers that they need a professional guide and training for high-altitude climbs, like the Inca Trail in Peru, and Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, climbed re-

cently for charity by frequent Tenerife visitor Chris Kamara, the Sky Sports personality. But everyone, from toddlers to grandmothers, can enjoy a gentle stroll along the Pembrokeshire path, possibly advancing at a rate of 12 miles a day. Charles Mathieson, head of tourism for Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, described it is a “fantastic honour” to be included in the list. He added: “We know the path attracts one million walkers each year, providing a fantastic resource for local residents and drawing people from all around the world. “Last year, the path celebrated its 40th anniversary, and it’s wonderful that this fabulous resource continues to be recognised. “It is one of the key founda-

tions of tourism in Pembrokeshire and makes a significant contribution to the economy, generating £14million each year.” Cheapflights describe Pembrokeshire as a “haven for wildlife” in their top-10 list, saying: “Along the path, travellers can witness incredible historical sites such

as 2,000-year-old forts, burial grounds from 400AD and a medieval castle or two. “And the path is no stranger to wildlife. Grey seals, puffins, foxes and hundreds of other species can be spotted along the way.” Pembrokeshire’s beaches are

also a big draw, and only last year they were named “second best on the planet” by the National Geographic magazine. Just pipping Pembrokeshire for second place is the Camino Frances walk, from St Jean Pied de Port in France to Compostela in Spain.

Family fugitives captured in USA

Three fugitive siblings accused of shooting at police and robbing a bank have been captured in Colorado, US after crashing their car into a barrier during a 20-mile, highspeed car chase. Known as the "Dougherty Gang", Dylan, 26, Lee Grace, 29 and Ryan, 21, were the targets of a nationwide search after being accused

Page 14

of carrying out a crime spree. Authorities said Lee Dougherty was shot in the leg after the crash when she pointed a gun at a police officer. All three suspects were taken to hospital to be treated for injuries before they were taken to prison. They were caught after their car was spotted in Colorado City and then again at a campsite nearby, but the suspects fled before police arrived. The chase began after an officer saw the

car at a petrol station. Spiked sticks were used on the road, which caused the car to roll over and crash into the barrier. A sheriff in Florida called the trio "very, very dangerous people" and said their capture was a tremendous relief. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to say we won," Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said. "We continuously said that if these three fugitives wanted a battle with law enforcement, we would win that battle. And that is what happened today." Last week, the siblings' mother, Barbara Bell, urged her children to give up before someone died. It has emerged the trio all had previous criminal records. Lee Dougherty has charges pending for a hit and run, and had been charged with battery. Dylan Dougherty Stanley had been charged with possession of marijuana. Ryan Dougherty had been wearing an ankle monitor after being convicted of sending sexually explicit text messages to an 11-year-old girl. He registered as a sex offender on August 1.

Riot raids: Cops warn thugs to expect a visit

Police have been raiding the homes of suspected troublemakers across the country as the crackdown on those involved in unrest intensifies. More than 1,500 people have been arrested in connection with disorder that wreaked havoc in English cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham. Large numbers of officers have been conducting raids in each of those cities, as senior police continued to issue hardline warnings to troublemakers.

West Midland Police's Superintendent Mark Payne told suspects: "Don't sleep easy, we are coming for you." And Assistant Chief Constable at Greater Manchester Police, Garry Shewan, has said "we know who you are and we are coming to get you". South Yorkshire Police also issued some no-nonsense advice to would-be rioters. The force's official Twitter account said: "No disorder in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham or Sheffield. If you're thinking of 'avin' a go... Don't bother. SYP is ready to respond." In London, intelligenceled swoops by 50 officers

were carried out in response to the looting of a Hugo Boss store in Sloane Square on Monday. Four arrests were made during raids related to the violent scenes - which caused up to ÂŁ1m worth of damage - and suspects were dragged from homes in Pimlico, central London. Another eight homes in Lambeth were raided, while officers made a number of arrests during simultaneous searches in Brixton. Clothing and an iPod suspected of being stolen during this week's disorder were recovered at one of the homes.

World's fastest plane is designed by US Military The US military has designed the world's fastest plane - and it would be capable of

travelling from London to Sydney in less than an hour.

The Falcon HTV-2 - which travels 22 times faster than a commercial airliner - will be launched later. Attached to the back of a rocket, the plane will blast off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, before detaching at the edge of space. Engineers then hope to guide the plane on a hypersonic flight, reaching speeds of around 13,000mph upon its return to Earth. Travelling at about 20 times the speed of sound and withstanding temperatures of 2,000C, the plane was designed as part of a research project. A previous launch attempt was abandoned and plane designs changed in April due to a fault on board the aircraft.

Nine minutes into the mission, at which point the plane had flown for 139 seconds reaching 16,700mph, an onboard computer detected an anomaly and ordered the plane to ditch in the ocean for safety reasons. A second attempt on Wednesday was delayed to Thursday because of poor weather conditions. Although the flight will not be broadcast, it will be possible to follow the plane's progress through the US Defence Agency's Twitter page.

'Chaos' as riot suspects pack courts in England There have been "chaotic" scenes in magistrates' courts as hundreds of people are standing to face charges relating to looting and violence in cities across the country. Courts in London have been working through the night in order to process the unprecedented number of people. However, solicitor Julian Young told Sky News that the process was a "knee-jerk reaction" to the trouble and not properly planned. "Lawyers were waiting hours for papers and then couldn't find their clients. Cases were delayed as we waited for files to be photocopied then the photocopier broke down, it was chaos. "We need the courts to give justice to people rather than being bounced into a situation where they have to plead guilty or not guilty in a short

space of time." Proceedings are taking place in Westminster, Birmingham and Manchester. Those who have appeared so far have come from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. They include an 11-year-old boy, a millionaire's daughter, a teaching assistant and a lifeguard. Natasha Reed, an aspiring social worker from Edmonton, admitted stealing a JVC television worth £299.99 from a Comet store on Saturday night. Sky reporter Nick Martin, at Westminster Magistrates Court, said the 24-year-old held her head in her hands as she sat in the dock after having handed herself in on Wednesday. Defending Andre Billington said: "She was arrested. She said she couldn't sleep thinking about what she had done." Second-year university law student Marouane Rouhi, 21, was remanded in custody

accused of being part of a 16-strong gang charged with violent disorder. Another alleged member of the group is 18-year-old Sameer Shah - a school youth mentor aiming to prevent gun crime. Solicitor Jim Kelly said Mr Rouhi was keen to clear his name so that he could continue to pursue his legal ambitions. Meanwhile, in Nottingham, an 11-year-old girl was given a nine month referral order after being charged with criminal damage for smashing windows at a New Look store on Wednesday evening. Sky's Lia Hervey described the judge at Croydon Magistrates Court on Wednesday as being extremely unforgiving, denying most defendants bail in favour remaining in custody or being electronically tagged. Laura Johnson, 19, appeared at Bexleyheath Magistrates Court charged in connection with the theft of £5,000-worth of

He was released on conditional bail after pleading guilty to burglary with intent to steal.

citizens from a new European Union member state can be restricted under certain conditions only, the Commission Spain was asked to provide data to justify its decision. Though the number of Romanian and Bulgarian workers in Spain has dropped over the last few years, Madrid announced last month that Romanians would require a work permit to become residents in Spain. As was stated last month, Government spokesman Jose Blanco said: “This temporary measure will not affect Romanians who are already part of the labour force in Spain. “It will not affect the free circulation of citizens within the

European Union - a principle Spain has always defended.” When Romania and Bulgaria entered the EU in 2007, their treaties of accession stipulated a seven-year transition period, during which other members could limit access to their labour markets. Spain lifted this restriction in January 2009, but warned it could reinstate it later if the labour market conditions so required. Since then, the country’s unemployment rate has leapt from 7.95% to 21.29% in the first quarter of 2011, which is a record among countries in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation Development.

Most have so far pleaded guilty admitting that thefts were "opportunistic" and a case of "getting caught up" in the disorder. Several cases were referred to the Crown Court, which will mean longer sentences for the perpetrators as magistrates can only hand out sentences a maximum of six months. At the Crown Court, riot charges can carry a jail term of up to 10 years.

Zapatero and Obama are committed to strengthen co-ordination plans The President Rodríguez Zapatero spoke by phone with Barack Obama, on the 8th August, to analyse the situation of the world economy, focusing on two main areas: the evolution of the debt problems in Europe and the United States, and the growth of the world economy.

THE European Union has given the go-ahead for Spain to tighten restrictions on Romanian workers.

It rubber-stamped Madrid’s decision last month to seek work permits in the future from Romanians hoping to settle in the country. EU Commission approval, until the end of 2012, is a result of “serious disturbances on its labour market. Spain has been hit very hard by the crisis”. Spain has the EU’s highest unemployment figures - over 20% since May last year. More than 800,000 Romanians live there, and the community suffers a 30% jobless rate. The Commission added: “The continuous increase of Romanian residents in Spain, and their high level of unemployment, has had an impact on the capacity of Spain to absorb new inflows of workers.” As the free movement of

As regards the evolution of the financial markets, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Barack Obama agreed on the need to speed up the application of the agreements reached by the Eurogroup on 21 July and strengthen the commitment to the euro. In respect of the growth of the world economy, which is affecting the United States, the Eurozone, as well as the emerging economies, the two leaders highlighted the need to work in a coordinated manner to strengthen economic growth and avoid a slowdown. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Barack Obama agreed to maintain contact between the economic teams of both governments in order to continue making coordinated progress with the two-fold aim of fostering stability and avoiding the slowdown of the world economy. The conversation between José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Barack Obama was held within the framework of intensive deal-

ings that the President of the Government has had over the course of the last few days with various European leaders, among them, the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, Herman van Rompuy and José Manuel Durao Barroso, respectively; the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, and the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi. The President of the Government of Spain and the President of the United States discussed the situation in Syria. In light of the fall of the regime of Bashar al-Assad, they agreed on the need to carry out a coordinated plan of action between the United Status, the European Union and Arab countries in the area to foster a change of situation in Syria. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero took advantage of the occasion to convey to Barack Obama his condolences on the deaths of the American soldiers when their helicopter crashed in Afghanistan last Saturday.

Time is up at last for the

Desperate Housewives Award-winning US drama Desperate Housewives is to be axed with the upcoming series being its last. The final episode of the dark comedy, set in Wistera Lane and starring the likes of Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria, will air in May 2012. The show became an international hit after premiering in 2004. Its creator, Marc Cherry, confirmed the news at the Television Critics Association tour in Beverley Hills. He told reporters he wanted the show to end on a high admitting: "The only thing harder than creating a hit television show is knowing when to end it. "We felt from a creative standpoint that this was the right time. I feel so good about it." Desperate Housewives has made superstars out of cast members Hatcher, Longoria, Felicity Huffman and Marcia Cross. For the seventh series they reportedly received substantial pay rises, earning $250,000 an episode, mak-

ing them the highest paid actresses on US television. I am so grateful for what the show has given me! We always knew we wanted to end on top and I thank ABC for giving us our victory lap! And a special thanks to Marc Cherry who forever changed my life! But Cherry said they reacted well when he told them the news. "It was bittersweet and lovely, because the women knew there was the possibility‌ They said some very lovely things to me about how I've changed their lives and careers," he said. "I truly, truly love every one of them. [They] fill me up with such emotion inside, I love my cast. [They're] people who are smart enough to be grateful." Longoria, who plays Gabrielle Solis, echoed these sentiments. She tweeted: "It's confirmed! We are filming our last season of Desperate Housewives! I am so grateful for what the show has given me!" "We always knew we wanted to end on top and I thank ABC for giving us our victory lap! And a special thanks to Marc Cherry who forever changed my life!"

The last series of Desperate Housewives had taken a dip in the US ratings, hitting new lows in its seven year history. Despite bringing in an average of 11.85 million viewers, the figures have halved since the first season when 23.7 million tuned in.

Desperate Housewives, which is broadcast in the UK on Channel 4, has won numerous awards including three Golden Globes. The ABC website is promising an explosive end to the series. "All good things eventually come to an end, and in the eighth and final

season, the stakes for everyone on Wisteria Lane are at an all-time high. "Season Eight of Desperate Housewives will roll out in a way that is accessible even to viewers who may have lapsed in their viewing, and be all the richer and more rewarding to the series' loyal fans."

Two heads are better than one for Pets’ Portrait Competition ACCION’S Pets’ Portrait Competition/ Exhibition continues to attract entries from near and far, and this week the organisers welcomed two horses, little and large, making friends over the stable door. Follow this link for more information and to submit

your pictures for the Pets’ Portrait Exhibition and Dog Agility Competition https:// www.facebook.com/event. php?eid=165852040150639 Please come and visit Accion del Sol, which is open Monday to Friday, from 3-6pm. For more information and details of how to adopt a dog, call 922 778 630. Don’t forget the refuge’s walk on 4th September, starting at 7pm from Los Cris-

tianos Harbour and ending at the Bhia Del Duque Hotel. There are lots of gorgeous dogs at the refuge who would love a good walk, or you can bring your own dog, naturally. It’s not a sponsored walk as such, but the refuge would welcome a small donation towards the upkeep of all their animals. For more information on the walk, contact Karen on 687 905 511.

Peppa is making the most of agility course SOFIA POLETTE and her little rescue dog, Peppa make such a pretty picture on their first visit to the Accion del Sol dog refuge last Wednesday. They turned up with Sofia’s mother, Johanna Stubb De Polette, to satisfy their curiosity, having read all about the adventures of

the Aktiontier-sponsored Granadilla sanctuary in Canarian Weekly. As Peppa enjoyed herself on the agility course with a helper, Johanna and Sofia were given a full tour of the surroundings by Alan, whose mum, Marion, runs the refuge. They were amazed at the facilities there, having only learned recently about this

luxurious home for stray dogs. The couple were also impressed with the thoughtful care given to all the dogs who are brought into the refuge by Protection Civil. Peppa enjoyed herself immensely on the agility course, and Sofia now plans to visit the refuge with her dog on a regular basis.

Trevor unmasked ... after 15 years MANY thanks to all who sponsored the removal of Trevor’s beard at the Marina Bar in Puerto Colon last Thursday. Everyone gave generously and, with the raffle proceeds as well, a total of 470 euros was raised for the Asociacion San Franscisco de los Animales.

Page 18

Thanks also to Ron for removing the 15-year-old beard without any blood being shed, and to Trevor for being so brave - and parting with an old friend. Finally, the Asociacion’s special thanks go to Lynne and Arthur for letting them stage the event at the Marina Bar.

Town Halls add weight to Accion luxury dog refuge ACCION DEL SOL were recently visited by officials from the new governing councils at Arona and Arico. They were impressed with the animal welfare at the high-class centre, and Arona wants to do more for the animals - and in a better way. Marion Gonzales, who runs the refuge, has an appointment with Arico, who are interested in signing a “convenio” (agreement) with her very soon. So administration changes at the respective Town Halls have already brought some new ideas to the table regarding the dogs’ welfare, as well better understandings and more interest in improving things. But the most important concern is that children should be educated in animal welfare, which has always been high on the Accion del Sol agenda.

The refuge will soon embrace English schools as well, while Granadilla also wish to step up their children’s educational school visits to the Granadilla animal sanctuary. A delighted Marion said: “It’s great to see so much importance being attached to children’s education regarding animal welfare. “Hopefully, this will make a big difference and help ease animal cruelty and needless breeding here in Tenerife.” Further good news for Accion and other refuges came this week when the Guardia Civil signed an agreement with the College of Vets in Santa Cruz to have access to the database of veterinary schools in the Canary Islands. It covers 450,000 registered animals, which will enable the national police to control the identification of legally-owned pets in case of loss, abandonment or abuse. That means they will be able to search for an animal,

either by the ID chip or via the owner’s personal details. Monday’s official agreement was signed by Guardia Civil Commander Manuel Touceda and Jorge de Miguel, President of the College of Vets in Santa Cruz. De Miguel told a news conference that data showed about 1,000 animals - mostly dogs - were abandoned annually, and that the figures were rising every year. He also said municipalities were obliged to take a census of the animals in their areas, but warned that only 20% of them had full information. He felt they should be able to access the database, which would enable them to update their facts. Commander Touceda recalled that of the 450,000 animals logged, 109,000 were hunting dogs (podencas), and he stressed that on four visits to Teide National Park, he saw several of these dogs abandoned.

Match Of The Day Saturday 13th August 10.15 - BBC ONE

Gary Lineker kicks off a new Premier League season in Match Of The Day. He presents highlights of Saturday's seven Premier League games as the new season gets under way. Liverpool spent heavily during the summer and their new signings will be eager to impress against Sunderland, particularly Jordan Henderson, who could make his Reds debut against the club he left just two months ago. Fellow midfielder Stewart Downing, who joined from Aston Villa, could also play his first competitive game for Kenny Dalglish's side. Arsenal take on Newcastle at St James' Park, scene of the Gunners' incredible collapse last season when they surrendered a four-goal lead to draw 4-4. QPR return to the top flight after a 15-year absence with Bolton providing the opposition at Loftus Road. Fellow new boys Norwich visit Wigan. Martin Jol's first Premier League match as Fulham boss is against an Aston Villa side also under new management, with Alex McLeish taking over at Villa Park this summer. Elsewhere, Tottenham meet Everton and Blackburn host Wolves.

finds a hooded, disguised Banksy recalling how he became involved with LA-based Frenchman Thierry Guetta. A fan of street art who followed Banksy and his peers with a video camera, Guetta purported to be a film-maker, although no film ever appeared. Instead, enabled by his subjects, Guetta opted to become an artist himself,

making awful, mass-produced graffiti art that, ironically, has become as valuable as the work it emulates. Slick, sharp and fantastically entertaining, this is a film that works not just as a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of helping strangers but also on a deeper level as a crafty meditation on art, its true value and our own gullibility.

Let’s Do Lunch... With Gino & Mel Monday 15th - Friday 19th - August, 12.30pm Gino D’Acampo and Melanie Sykes continue with the second week of their new live lunchtime show, which offers a menu of fun food and celebrity chat. While the programme is on air viewers can vote for the recipe they would like to see cooked by Gino at the end of the show, and Gino also faces a surprise daily food challenge. On Monday, the duo welcomes singer and actor Jason Donovan, who tucks

into Gino's chicken, tomato and feta cheese pasta. Tuesday sees Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood enjoying a pea and parsley soup, while singer and actress Jodie Prenger samples Marmite macaroni cheese and a chocolate chili mousse on Wednesday. On Thursday, Gino serves up spicy beans on toast to newsreader Nicholas Owen. Friday's show rounds off the week with guest Joe

Pasquale, who is shocked by a surprise dish. Apart from his frequent TV appearances as a chef, Gino is well known for winning the 2009 edition of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!. Melanie first came to public attention as the bikini-clad model in Boddingtons Beer adverts and soon found herself in demand as a TV presenter, including joining Des O'Connor to host Today with Des and Mel on ITV1.

Mammoth Screen and ITV are delighted to announce the casting of SHAUN EVANS as the young Endeavour Morse. Endeavour is written by Russell Lewis (creator of Lewis, Kavanagh QC and Cadfael, and writer of Inspector Morse, Spooks and Murphy’s Law) and is made by Mammoth Screen for ITV1. The single film will be shot in Oxford this autumn and will air early next year. Shaun Evans (The Take, Come Rain Come Shine) will step in to John Thaw’s shoes to play the younger version of Colin Dexter’s iconic character, giving the audience the chance to discover the origins of the detective famed for his love of crosswords, classical music, real ale and classic cars.

Set in 1965, the story follows the hunt for a missing schoolgirl which draws Endeavour Morse back to the place which will ultimately shape and define his destiny – Oxford. Deep in a full-blown murder investigation and led by Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, Endeavour finds himself side-lined, discredited and at a dead end. Facing down the demons of his past, Endeavour begins his own quest in pursuit of justice, risking all in the hunt for a truth that will haunt him for the rest of his days. Evans commented: “Morse as a young man is a wonderful character that I'm very excited to be playing. My hope is that we can compliment

Joe “in my opinion” Ferguson Weekly Updates

Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com

Please change this stupid rule LAST week, after not seeing my one-yearold son for nearly two weeks, I set off for the airport to pick Taylor and his mother up.

After three weeks of fun and meeting new family members back home, he was always looking so happy when I spoke to him via computer when I was not with him. But as soon as I saw them coming through arrivals, I knew something was wrong. My son smiled, stretched his arms out and kissed me. But it was not with full energy, and he looked pale. His mum explained that he was running very hot and being sick, so we decided to take him to hospital immediately. We took him to the same place where he was born because, as far as we are concerned, they both were treated so well during the birth and I will always be indebted to the staff. They did their jobs with both professionalism and friendliness. And on this occasion, with my son being ill, they acted just the same. I am not having a rant at the staff, and the only thing I have to pick on is a stupid rule which seems unbelievable. When we arrived at casualty, with Taylor in my arms, we were asked to come to the front. Kids get priority here, and rightly so. We explained the symptoms within a minute and, as we both made our way into the corridor, we were told: “Sorry, but only one person with patient.” Please note, the lady said “sorry” and she even looked

Page 30

embarrassed saying it! Mrs Ferguson took our son in her arms and I was nearly in tears as the poor little thing was limp and sweating all over. And that was the last I saw of him for over two hours! I was outside waiting and waiting with everything going through my mind. I swear to you I have never felt more useless in my entire life. I expected the worst and had to walk to the car park, where I broke down. I can’t remember when I last cried like that. But I pulled myself together and waited it out. I was then called by the nurse to come in as he was crying constantly, and the whole hospital must have heard him. I then saw my son with a drip in his arm and both he and mother in tears. My heart sank as I asked what was going on, to be told that they had no idea at the moment. I was informed that the drip was the normal size, with a two-inch needle going into his arm to give him the fluids needed, and I knew it was the right thing to do. I was then ushered out again with no more information as the “Sorry, only one person at a time” rule was relayed to me again. Another hour-and-a-half went by and all I could see in my mind was this little boy who’d had the time of his life, running around with a smile on his face. His daddy leaves him for a week or so and when they next meet, the poor soul goes through pain. As the sound of my heart-breaking reverber-

ated all over Las Americas, I saw both of them walking out - and I have never been more relieved. I hugged them both so tight, and to see my little boy smile, looking better and wanting to be in my arms again was the best feeling in the world. The staff did their job and again, I am so thankful to them. It was then I was told he had to endure a suppository … you know where. And the screams from him over this were just the worst. I though at this point I was going to collapse. I was not doing my job as a father, protecting my boy from any pain and being there for him. The good thing is that he is over his virus and laughing away again, thanks to the hospital. So, now to my point. This rule of only “one person per patient” is all and good, with overcrowded waiting rooms and hospital patient areas, But where there is a child involved, I feel it is only right that both parents should be there for him or her. His mother had to be strong for him, and for what he had to go through. We both agreed that we had no idea which was worse: going through it with him or being outside, not knowing what was going on. Again, I am forever thankful for the staff and hospital for doing their job. But through no fault of their own, a father was stopped being there for his son. This is a stupid rule, not only from a personal point of view but morally as well. It needs changing! Joe

Canarian Weekly Choice Mock The Week Coming soon

With the comedy transfer window now firmly open, high-flying Mock The Week have moved quickly to land a marquee signing ahead of their new season which begins on BBC Two on Thursday 8th September at 10pm. Proven international performer Chris Addison passed an intensive – and intrusive – medical at

the programme's secret London training base yesterday and, after agreeing a permanent contract for an undisclosed fee, is now set to line up alongside established galacticos Dara O'Briain, Hugh Dennis and Andy Parsons for the next six episodes and the Christmas special. After being linked with a number of rival shows over the summer – big spending Dancing On Ice, newly promoted Celebrity Big Brother and somewhat surprisingly The Only Way Is Essex amongst them – the The Thick Of It star reportedly found the opportunity of a place

alongside veteran satirist Dennis on the topical show's fabled left flank just too good to turn down and issued a "come and get me" plea to the show's producers. A source quite close to the BBC speculated: "Chris is a great signing for the autumn run. With party conferences and major sporting events coming up, I imagine he'll be given a roving role as he has the ability to supply quality ammunition for Dara in the centre as well as the confidence to go it alone. With appearances from the likes of Micky Flanagan, Milton Jones, Ed Byrne,

Stewart Francis, Miles Jupp and Ava Vidal in the pipeline, it looks like Mock The Week really will be the panel show to watch this season." Mock The Week was created by Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson, the creative force behind the iconic improvisation based show Whose Line Is It Anyway? which ran for ten years on British TV before successfully transferring to the United States. Suzanne Gilfillan is the executive editor for the BBC. It is produced for the BBC by independent production company Angst Productions.

Alex Jones will present the BBC Proms in the Park 2011 in Wales BBC The One Show presenter Alex Jones joins Only Men Aloud musical director Tim Rhys-Evans to co-present this year's BBC Proms in the Park on Saturday 10th September. Presenter Alex joined the BBC One daily magazine programme in 2010 and has become a mainstay on the channel, presenting Eurovision results and Let's Dance For Comic Relief in 2011. Alex says: "Even though I'm now based in London, I always enjoy heading home to Wales, especially when I'm invited to present a live event such as BBC Proms in the Park. With so many talented musicians and singers performing live on one stage, I'm sure the atmosphere will be incred-

joining the UK-wide revelry of the Last Night of the Proms, adding their musical magic to the evening under the wand of Tecwyn Evans. This will be his first performance as conductor at BBC Proms in the Park, as he leads the feast of music that includes Harry Potter's Symphonic Suite, Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream and the theme music for the TV series, Merlin. Bringing the summer festivities to a close, with classical music and fireworks, families and music lovers are invited to bring picnics and flags, and to join in with the theme of "magic and wizardry". Audiences are also invited to sing-along to a variety of popular numbers throughout the evening.

Autumn Television - BBC Daytime - two new series commemorating Britain's war effort Two brand new series commemorating the war effort made by thousands of Britons from the Second World War to the present day, have today been announced by BBC Daytime. In Remembrance Week on BBC One this autumn, Gethin Jones explores the personal stories of people whose lives have been touched by

war from the Second World War to recent modern day conflicts including the Falklands, Balkans, the Gulf Wars and Afghanistan. Over on BBC Two, in How We Won The War, Jules Hudson looks back to Forties Britain, as he travels across the UK to meet some of the ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things to help win the Second World War and who were heroes in their own right. Liam Keelan, Controller of Daytime, says: "These two new social history

series celebrate and commemorate the war effort made by the many individuals across the UK from the Second World War to modern day. I'm delighted to welcome Gethin Jones as the host of Remembrance Week and Jules Hudson – a passionate Second World War historian – to How We Won The War. Both series have emotional but uplifting stories that I hope will inspire our audiences at home about the bravery, camaraderie and companionship of troops throughout history."

Remembrance Week In the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday 2011, BBC One Daytime celebrates stories of courage, emotion and sacrifice made by thousands of people from all walks of life and from all over the UK. Remembrance Week, presented by Gethin Jones, explores the reality of modern day conflicts as well as those from the past through the personal stories of people whose lives have been touched by war. The series will focus on modern day conflicts including the Falklands, Balkans, the Gulf Wars and Afghanistan. Gethin Jones says: "It's a real privilege to be asked to spend time with our hero's home and abroad as we approach remembrance week. It's a time to honour and reflect on the heroic work our armed forces – past and present – carry out."

Enjoy the lazy, hazy Sundays at Taboos SIXTIES icons The Kinks and the Small Faces both sung about lazy Sunday afternoons, and the owners of Taboos also reckon that’s the perfect way to spend this special part of the weekend. So, from 4-8pm, they invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy live music on the restaurant’s open sun terrace at San Blas, Golf del Sur. The Reboot Project consist of Doug (vocals), Mateus (double bass), Marco (guitarist), Sammy P (saxophone and keyboard) and Jon on percussion. They perform covers of those classics we all know, and add their own musical input to feature the band’s instruments in a unique way. The band were joined by Phil Gibson plus William and David Lalley last Sunday, and musicians are welcome every Sunday. So if you believe you have the talent, then why not join in?

The Taboos Goes Italian kitchen is open from 6pm and offers a full menu, with 20% discount off your final bill throughout August. On Wednesdays, Mike Morrison organises the Taboos’ Golf Competition, which comprises a mixed-betterball stapleford. Those interested in playing can call him on 922 738 687. And later in the evening, you can take in the live sax back at Taboos, with the clas-

sics from 8-11pm. Thursday is now a House Music Night, mixed with live sax and drums from midnight. Besides the special menu discount offers, you can also enjoy the nightly Happy Hours, from 6pm until midnight. All in all, Taboos, on the back road at San Blas near the hotel, is a great entertainment venue with an excellent restaurant.

Ask your lender Struggling UK mortgage customers should seek help from their lender.

Record number of Brit shoppers 'have no cash' A record number of British shoppers feel they have no spare cash as the higher cost of living and Government spending cuts hit bank balances. 32% of people questioned for the British Retail Consortium's latest consumer confidence survey felt they had no money left over after paying essential bills. They were concerned about rising utility bills, the economy and increasing fuel prices. The study found 71% changed their shopping habits and 65% switched to

cheaper grocery brands to stay within their budgets. While the consumer confidence index rose slightly in the second quarter, it remains down on all of last year. BRC director general Stephen Robertson said: "The squeeze on disposable incomes is getting tighter. "Even after paying out for essentials, households that do have spare cash are choosing to pay off debts and build up savings rather than spend on the high street." Fewer families are having to hand over the keys to their properties because they can't pay their mortgages, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders.

It says 18,100 homes were repossessed in the first half of this year, compared with 19,500 in the same period last year - a fall of 7%. The CML says repayment problems have stabilised as people hang on to their jobs and interest rates stay low. Airport operator BAA said it handled 6.9 million passengers last month - up 2.5% on July 2010. BAA says Heathrow's performance is good news for the wider UK economy Overall, BAA's six UK airports handled just over 11 million passengers last month, an increase of 0.8% on the same period last year though Stansted had 7.2% fewer passengers.

Seven in ten people (72%) are worried about mortgage rates, with 14% struggling with their repayments, according to new research by Which? The consumer champion also found that just a third of people (36%) who are struggling with mortgage repayments have approached their lender for help. Options available to lenders include moving customers from a repayment to interest-only mortgage, allowing them a payment holiday or allowing them to move to a different deal. The consumer champion is calling on lenders not to use the current financial crisis as an excuse to neglect struggling borrowers. Although in over three quarters (78%) of cases borrowers were offered some form of assistance, Which? warns that a significant minority of lenders aren’t doing enough to help their customers. An increase of £50 a month in mortgage repayments would have an impact on three quarters of households. 37% would need to cut back on regular spending, 20% would reduce the amount they are saving and 9% would not have enough for essentials. Although the Bank of England Base Rate is not expected to rise in the near future, re-

cent research by Which? Money shows that a fifth of lenders have increased the rates on their SVR mortgages since the rate reached its all-time low of 0.5% in March 2009. Which? executive director Richard Lloyd says: “With ongoing uncertainty about the economy, it’s not surprising that many people are worried about their household finances. For some

it would only take a small increase in mortgage rates to send them over the edge. “If you’re struggling with mortgage repayments then your first port of call should be your lender. It’s not in anyone’s interest for people to default on their mortgage, so it’s important that lenders do all they can to help their customers who are struggling with repayments.”

Any old iron, windows or blinds? - you’ll find them all at the depot THE county of Santa Barbara in the US have developed a novel idea for DIY experts, and there’s no reason why the idea shouldn’t catch on. True, there are ‘breakers’ yards for cars and building materials in the UK, but the Santa Barbara government seem to have it all sewn up, and they even have look-outs posted all over for illegal dumping of materials. Less is More is the county’s trademark, and it is the ultimate recycling resource for residents, with various sites around the county where just about anything can be taken to, sold or bought. “Why visit the dump? Choose to reuse! Says their LessIsMore. org website, and it really is an eyeopener for those people who are

Page 38

anxious to refurbish their homes, Several businesses specialise in taking and reselling the same materials that the big stores carry, but with one important difference: the items they have are ready for reuse! Some of the county’s local businesses and non-profit organisations specialise in salvaging and reselling usable materials, especially from demolition sites. You can drop off unwanted but usable home-improvement items, or buy materials that others have brought in. Most materials are less expensive than at retails stores, so everybody wins! “We’re talking about a wide range of materials, from small pieces of hardware and piping to large doors and chandeliers,” says a spokesman. Items include windows and doors, blinds and shutters, bathroom and

kitchen fixtures, lighting, hardware, cabinets and shelves, electric goods, even clothing - and so much more. And more! If you’re looking for a specific item and can’t find it, phone up and the organisers will put feelers out for you. The only stipulation is that the materials are in good condition. But don’t try dropping off broken windows or smashed cabinets because they should be taken to the nearest tip. For buyers, most of the goods are instantly usable. Yes, some may need a new paint job, while others may require a bit more restoration. The good thing is that you can check it out before you buy - and there’s obviously no obligation to purchase anyway. And because there are so many different sources of materials, the selections tend to be unbeatable.

Allotment in a pot You can grow your own veggies in pots on your terrace, why not try?

French beans are ideal for patio containers as well as for flower beds. There are several varieties including yellow, purple and spotted as well as familiar green which is produced on shortly, bushy plants. There are also various climbing varieties. Both these plants require a lot of space, however, this does not mean they are difficult to grow. Young plants are easily available to purchase to start you off, however if you would like to experiment with more unusual varieties you probably need to start from seed. Lettuce is the perfect ingredient for tasty summer salads. To ensure a continuous crop throughout the summer start a few seeds off very few weeks.

A versatile vegetable, also known as seakale beet or swiss chard, unlikely to be found the in shops. There are several ways to grow potatoes without the need for trenching and earthing-up. Radishes are very fast to grow from seed Producing high yields these plants grow best in rich, well-prepared soil. If you soil is not very good you could try growing them in a deep container. Seed sprouts are highly nutritious and tasty both raw and cooked. Tomatoes have the advantage that they suffer very little with pest problems outdoors. There are some excellent varieties available with loads of flavour. (Ensure the variety is suitable for growing outdoors).

Veg wars In the UK, ‘Allotment Week’ is just drawing to a close; a host of events have taken place to raise awareness of allotment tending benefits. There have also been some interesting and as equally funny facts and figures produced.

August garden jobs Watering takes priority as it is so hot here

66% of local authorities have waiting lists for locals to go and dig in, totaling 86,787 people waiting to grow their own. It equates to an average of 57 people waiting for every 100 plots. The information has been gleaned by a survey of the English local authorities, 323 in total. On average each council has 17 allotment sites, approximately 43 plots per site, making a grand total of 152,442 plots. Obviously due to an economic point of view there is an increase in ‘grow your own’ and new allotment sites were brought into use by 31 councils, 15 hectares, and the total number of plots on these new sites being 939.

Allotment benefits include:• providing a sustainable food supply • giving a healthy activity for people of all ages • fostering community development and cohesiveness

I’ve put together a list of things that you can be concentrating on this month. • • • • • • • • •

Watering takes priority as it is so hot here Water camellias regularly as drought can cause the buds to drop next spring Summer prune wisteria, shortening long sideshoots back to five or six leaves Deadhead roses, unless you want them to form autumn hips Trim lavender immediately after flowering to maintain its shape, but avoid cutting back too far into old wood Hoe weeds regularly to prevent seedlings establishing Trim conifer hedges, evergreen hedges and topiary Deadhead dahlias to encourage further blooms to form Cut down perennials past their prime

12 August 2011 - 18 August 2011

• • • • • • • • • •

Sow hardy annuals for early flowers next year Harvest young marrows but leave some to fully ripen for storage and winter use Trim leaves from strawberries that have finished fruiting Plant out rooted strawberry runners into new beds Sow parsley in pots for winter and spring use Pinch out the tops of outdoor tomatoes Pick fresh herbs to freeze in ice cubes for winter use, or to hang and dry to store in jars Order spring-flowering bulbs to plant this autumn Deadhead border plants, unless you want to collect their seeds Collect seeds and ripe seed pods from favourite flowers and vegetables

• acting as an educational resource • providing access to nature and wildlife, and acting as a resource for biodiversity • giving open spaces for local communities • reducing carbon emissions through avoiding the long-distance transport of food. But everything in the garden does not always come up smelling of roses. Allotment societies and sites suffer from ‘veg wars’. And according to one article allotments are hotbeds of feuds, rivalry and bad behaviour, resulting in more than 1,500 reported disputes since 2009. In some incidents crops being poisoned, torched or stolen. But despite this the numbers wanting to join the gardening revolution is increasing.

Dear Christine

carl pattison

Your resident Agony Aunt

from Robot, answers your hair questions

I’m giving short notice... WHILE trying to analyse my clients as to what they want out of their hair, I hear time and time again: “I need something easy - I don’t want to do much with it.” Okay, so that rules out ‘long’, unless you want a Tenerife Ponytail. ‘Medium’? Well, that’s still gonna take some doing, which leaves ‘short’. Recently, I seem to have taken more than a few inches off a lot of my clients’ hair. Quite a few have become brave and said: “Do what you want.” If it’s a drastic change you’re after, then you are going to see a lot of hair on the floor afterwards. Don’t be yelling or carrying on because I don’t do: “I want a new look, but don’t take a lot off!” Many of my clients seem to think ‘short’ is going to look masculine, yet short hair can be more feminine than long. How many times do we see long hair dragged back into an elastic band? So feminine, yeh? Wrong! Scraped-back hair can look quite harsh and is not forgiving at all because it doesn’t soften the face. It can quite often give a very fierce look and can also be ageing. Think about it - how many times have you been walking down the street and seen a woman from behind with long, scraped-back hair? You think it’s some young thing, only to be horrified when she turns around and has a face that could scare small children? No, seriously, there’s a time and place for long hair, but not when it isn’t looked after. Going ‘short’, I’ve found, has given most of my clients a new confidence. If you’ve seen your hair for some time looking drab and old-fashioned, then maybe it’s

Page 40

your turn to try something a little more WOW! Yup, I’ve made people cry by cutting off their long hair, but they have thanked me for it afterwards. Only last week, a young girl came in telling me she wanted her long, bleached, dry, thin hair “ended” because she was growing it (help, someone call the hair police for me). It wasn’t so much of a disaster as a hair crime. I spent 15 minutes convincing her to have it cut it off and, finally, she gave in. While I was cutting it, she was a mess - almost crying. But at the end, both she and her hair looked so much better. She wasn’t so impressed, but I thought: “Give her a chance to get used to it.” One week later and it was: “Oh Carl, I love my new hair and everyone tells me it’s so much better.” My young client went from drab to fab in 45 minutes, but my feeling was that if everyone had told her how much better it was, why didn’t someone say something before? Sometimes, I know it’s a trauma losing something, but if it’s going to give your face a ‘lift’ and flatter you, then go ahead and do it. Look at your hair now in the mirror and what does it say? Does the style do something for you? Is the colour complementing the look? You’d never put on an item of clothing that didn’t suit you, or that you didn’t feel good in, so why wear your hair every day

in a style that does nothing for you or your image? To me, hair is a creative product, and I don’t see it as something that just grows out of your head. It needs to say something about who you are. If it doesn’t, then I think it’s a shame because it doesn’t take that much upkeep to stay on top of it. So if you’ve decided that a new look is in order, then go for it. I hear more tales of joy than of woe when people change their images. Go for something chic and simple if going ‘short’, while ‘shaved’ rarely looks good unless you want a more severe look. Brighten the colour to complement your new shape, and never half-do a short style, because saying, “I want it like this, but longer”, rarely works. If you’re gonna do it, then do it well. Always listen to your professional stylist and don’t be put off by other Tenerife Ponytails that tell you to hang on to it. Do they look good? Erm, no! Stand out, be brave, and you will never look back!

Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com Dear Christine, I am in my first serious relationship for two years and am completely addicted to it. Time spent away from my guy because of holidays, etc, is torture and I often find myself sobbing at the thought of us being parted. He’s going back to England for a fortnight soon and I don’t know how I’ll cope. I want to spend as much time with him as possible, but I have had my heart broken before and always look at my relationships in a pessimistic light, such as constantly thinking he doesn't love me as much as I love him. I know I need to get a grip of myself, but I really don’t know how. I have a constant lump in my throat and feel stressed all the time. Please will you give me some advice? T Dear T, There’s love and then there’s desperation. You seem to be aware that you’ve slipped into the latter, and it’s making you desperately unhappy. I would first recommend that you take up some sort of activity for at least 20 minutes a day, assuming you’re fit enough. Exercise not only burns off the surplus adrenaline, which fuels anxiety, but also stimulates the production of feel-good hormones to help lift your mood. People are more likely to keep up with an activity if they enjoy it, so perhaps you could consider yoga classes, walking, swimming or a sport that combines exercise with socialising, such as salsa lessons, belly-dancing, tennis or badminton, or whatever appeals to you most. I’m not convinced, though, that you will start to help yourself. You’ve come to believe that if you relax and start trusting your boyfriend, your relationship will end. However, by trying to hand him the responsibility for how you feel, you’re placing an unfair and unrealistic burden on him. You and only you are responsible for how you feel, and for what you think and do. Instead of

suffocating him with your neediness, how about you stop expecting one area of life to fulfil all your needs? You really need to build up your confidence, and there are plenty of resources on the web, not least www.confidenceclub.net and www.coping.org. Books such as Women Who Love Too Much (and the men who love them) by Robin Norwood, can help you boost your selfesteem so you don’t feel so clingy and insecure. Letting go of your desperation defence can seem very scary, so I hope you’ll seek counselling or hypnotherapy (Martin Dobson, 922 729 687, is a qualified hypnotherapist This should help you to accept that you’re a lovable person and to appreciate that you deserve a good man with whom you can build an equalequal relationship. However, until you love yourself, you won’t be able to enjoy “good” love. I wish you luck with this challenge. Christine

Dear Christine, When I was growing up, my mum favoured my older brother and seemed to find fault with me all the time. My brother died of cancer two years ago and my mum was a wreck. She still is, really, and that caused her marriage with my step-dad to fall apart. My problem is that she wants to live here in Tenerife with me. It could be the fresh start she badly needs, but I’m really worried that she’ll make my life a misery again. I do love her and she’s had such a bad time, but I can’t forget what she used to be like. What do you think I should do? Debbie Dear Debbie, It’s understandable that your mum wants to live close to her nearest surviving relative, but I can appreciate your concerns, as well. I would guess, though, that your mum will no longer find fault with you now you are grown up. It sounds like the old pattern has not really been repeated in recent years and that you are

remembering her earlier behaviour towards you. If you think you have been affected in some way by events in your childhood, I would recommend that you have some counselling. There are many qualified private counsellors and psychotherapists on the Island, such as Tracy J Dodds (628 104 032) or Andrea Greenhalgh (659 054 745). I have an idea, though, that your mum would not be at all critical of you now. That doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be demanding, especially given the circumstances, and that could be just as difficult for you to cope with. In your place, I would suggest that she rents an apartment nearby for about six months. You could tell her, truthfully, that lots of people do that to help them decide whether they really want to make such a big move. This would also provide an ideal opportunity for you to judge whether you could cope with having her so close. Hopefully, spending time in a different environment would not only help her come to terms with losing your brother, but could also help her to appreciate her surviving child a lot more. If the worst comes to the worst, and it turns out that she’s just as critical toward you as ever, you will have to tell her she’ll need to change before you’ll welcome her into your day-to-day life. In the end, though, you can’t actually stop your mum from coming out to Tenerife - no more than you can stop anyone from living wherever they like. Good luck. Christine. Facing up to acne… ACNE, the most common of all skin problems, is characterised by reddened, inflamed pimples. It is found mainly on the face, but it can also develop on the back, shoulders and chest. Acne is more common in young men because androgens (male sex hormones), such as testosterone, stimulate the cells to enlarge and produce more sebum (a mixture of oil and bodily waxes). This, in turn, blocks the skin pores and creates the spots, more often than not. Teenagers are more inclined to spots and acne because, during puberty, there is an increase in androgens in boys and girls. Pre-menstrual women often experience spats of acne as well. The exact cause of acne is not known, but excessive stimulation of the skin by hormones is often a factor. Other reasons include hereditary factors, oily skin, stress and, sometimes, over-stimulation of the skin, caused by the use of overabrasive skin-care products. Many people believe that poor diet plays an important role in acne breakouts, but there is no real evidence to reflect this. Obviously, if and when certain foods are consumed and a reaction is visible, then avoidance of these certain food groups is the best policy.

Cosmetic Acne If your skin takes a turn for the worse, it is worth looking at your skin-care and makeup products to see if they are actually to blame for a break-out of acne or sensitivity. Comedogenicity - the tendency of the skin’s pores to clog when exposed to certain cosmetic ingredients - affects up to 30 million women in the US. That is around one in every three women who visits a beauty salon. It is called by a variety of names, such as comedogenicity, cosmetic acne and acne cosmetica, but the condition is all the same. Skin pores are blocked with plugs of hardened oils and skin cells, brought on by the use of cosmetics. The technical name for those plugs is comedones, and are the visual signs that the skin might be reacting to certain make-up or skin-care ingredients. They appear as raised blackheads, whiteheads and small blemishes where make-up is worn most frequently: the cheeks, chin, jawline, forehead and sometimes around the eyes. The good news is that once identified, the clogged pores are fixed, quickly and easily - but only if the individual is prepared to make a few changes to her daily beauty routine, and follows up with regular salon facials. Cosmetic Acne is not a true form of acne since

12 August 2011 - 18 August 2011

it is an externally-caused condition, brought on by the use of incorrect products and procedures. As mentioned, true acne is the skin’s response to hormonal imbalances. Comedones do appear in both forms of acne, regardless of the cause. Even though it is caused externally, Cosmetic Acne is often linked to true acne. That’s because: *Both occur in skin that is overly oily- even if the oiliness is mild. *The comedones of each can look similar to the untrained eye. *It is found most frequently in people who are prone to acne reactions. *It is rarely found in ladies outside the 15-45 age group. Cosmetic Acne does appear differently from teenage acne in that the comedones are quite raised on the skin’s surface, whereas the other is often embedded quite deeply in the skin. The area will also be clear of redness and irritation, which usually go together with acne. If you are suffering from Cosmetic Acne, labelling will actually give you an idea if that particular product is for you. Manufacturers are required by law to provide a detailed list of all ingredients in their products, and the following makeup ingredients are most likely to cause problems in ladies with oily skin:

*D&C Red Colorants: Commonly found in cream rouges, powdered blushes and lipsticks. Look for make-up without D&C red colours and do not use red-toned eye-shadows since these dyes are illegal in products applied to the eye area. *Lanolin: Simple forms of lanolin can be mildly comedogenic, but chemicallyprocessed lanolins can be a big problem. They can cause anything from mild to severe irritation and of course comedones. Isopropyl Myristate (IPM): This ingredient receives the worst press of all the comedogens. The only permanent solution to clogged pores is usually ‘routine’ and ‘avoidance’. Routine: Use products which you can identify as suitable for your skin type, such as those without any comedogenic properties, and take regular facials which involve some form of deep cleansing but at the same time doesn’t dry or damage the skin. Avoidance: Get used to reading product labels and identify which ingredients are clogging up the pores and promoting oiliness and comedones. To sum up, women with oily skin must always be faithful to their cleansing and homecare routines and use noncomedogenic products if they wish to keep clear, clean complexions.

Lighten up your picnics IT’S nearly always picnic weather here in Tenerife, but that doesn’t mean the food is always greeted with a sunny smile by everyone.

So here are some lighter versions of picnic classics which will delight all the family, without taking up too much of your time. Food firms fined £50m Restaurant riots and in big price-fix scandal public disorder pubs Tesco has reacted with fury after the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) fined the supermarket chain for taking part in a price-fixing cartel. It has threatened the competition watchdog with legal action, saying the £10m penalty is not justified as it took no part in collusion to rig the prices of cheese and milk in 2002 and 2003. The company said it reacted with "surprise and dismay" over the OFT's decision to include it in penalties totalling nearly £50m. Asda, Sainsbury's and Safeway (since bought up by Morrisons) and dairy processors Dairy Crest, McLelland, The Cheese Company and Wiseman all received lenient fines after admitting liability. Another dairy firm, Arla, escaped a penalty because it blew the whistle on the practice. In a statement, Tesco promised to defend its position "vigourously" and "through the courts if necessary". The OFT believes the scandal is thought to have cost consumers around £270m and it

had initially intended to fine the guilty parties more that £116m but scaled back the penalties after a period of consultation. Tesco is the second supermarket to threaten legal action over the case. In 2008, Morrisons announced it was to lodge a libel suit against the OFT, alleging that the body had damaged its reputation by including it in a list of guilty firms. The watchdog later dropped its allegation against the supermarket. Following the announcement of the fines, the OFT's chief executive John Fingleton said:

"This decision sends a strong signal to supermarkets, suppliers and other businesses. "The OFT will take action and impose significant fines where it uncovers anti-competitive behaviour aimed at increasing the prices paid by consumers. "Competition in the supermarket sector is generally intense and has deliveredsignificant benefits to shoppers across the UK in terms of innovation, choice and improved value for money. "Our investigation and this final decision will help ensure that this competition is maintained."

Gordon Ramsay is being replaced as the face of Gordon's gin by two top television actors. The celebrity chef has appeared in the spirit's ads since 2007, but with sales now falling Ashes to Ashes lead man Philip Glenister and Silent Witness star Emilia Fox are taking over. The foul-mouthed Ramsay was a controversial choice for Gordon's, which is now

hoping to gain a more glamorous image. Ramsay had gin poured over him in his television ad, while in the new one Glenister and Fox play a couple having a drink in a theatre bar and quoting Shakespeare. The move comes not long after the news that Ramsay's arch-rival Jamie Oliver is to part company with Sainsbury's, ending an 11-year advertising relationship. Baking expert Lorraine Pascale will be replacing him.

Text message in a crisis THE Foreign Office is trialling text messaging service in a crisis.

Vodafone UK customers who take their mobile phones overseas may now find their phone is more than just a handy way to stay in touch with friends and family. The Foreign Office has launched a trial service with the network provider to deliver emergency text messages to their subscribers as well as to customers of any mobile provider whose service runs on Vodafone’s network. The text will be sent out to customers who are in a country where there has been a major crisis – such as a natural disaster or civil unrest. The service is free to cus-

tomers of the mobile providers taking part in the trial and will provide essential advice in the event of a crisis. The Foreign Office will pilot this service for a 12 month period. Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne said: “The recent consular crises in Libya and Japan have demonstrated the need to deliver live travel safety messages to as many people as quickly as possible. This new service is part of our vision to deliver better consular services more cost-effectively and we’re delighted to be working with Vodafone UK and a number of partners on the pilot. We hope in the future we will be able to roll out this service with other mobile network operators and mobile providers.”

“The pilot is part of the Foreign Office’s commitment to improve consular services. We will soon have the ability to send text messages to all affected British Nationals registered on our crisis database. As well as this we’re also exploring delivering important information through a range of mobile and online tools, including Smartphone apps, a travel advice site for mobile phones and making effective use of social media and digital tools.” The text messaging pilot will not replace any existing services and information provided in the texts will continue to be provided on the Foreign Office website, and the FCO Travel Facebook and Twitter channels.

TripAdvisor now provides

Euro train travel details TripAdvisor®, has announced the launch of rail itineraries into its award-winning flight meta-search engine, TripAdvisor Flights. The move makes TripAdvisor the first travel website to integrate rail providers in-line with flight options across a global network. TripAdvisor has partnered with RailEasy to provide a full complement of UK rail fares, as well as one of the world’s largest rail providers, Deutsche Bahn, providing travellers access to a broad range of train choices across continental Europe. Other train networks available to the UK user include IDTGV and French, Italian and Spanish train networks via Rail Europe UK. “With the integration of rail itineraries into TripAdvisor Flights, we now offer travellers not only a comprehensive flight search on the Web, but also an easy way to compare train options,” said Bryan Saltzburg, general manager of New Initiatives at TripAdvisor. “This is especially helpful when planning a trip through Europe, where there are more high-speed rail options now

than ever before and hundreds of millions of travellers opt for train travel each year.” When travellers conduct a flight search on TripAdvisor, the site will now display rail itineraries alongside flight choices for relevant routes. In some cases rail is priced even cheaper than air travel, such as London to Paris, or Frankfurt to Brussels.

Travellers can then filter the search results according to their travel needs and conveniently click to complete the booking on the air or rail website of their choice. In addition, travellers can access all of TripAdvisor flights tools, including the innovative Fees Estimator, to easily compare the true cost of their flight and train options.

It’s planned to launch additional rail links for other contried in the near future. Travellers can also use rail itineraries when conducting flight searches through the free TripAdvisor mobile apps for the iPhone, Android, Nokia, Windows Phone 7 and Palm smartphones, the iPad, and through the TripAdvisor mobile website.

Following the announcement that two airlines - Swiss and Lufthansa – are to start charging customers for using debit and credit cards, Richard Lloyd, Executive Director of Which?, says: "It’s unbelievable that two airlines have introduced these card fees just weeks after the OFT agreed with us that they are unfair and misleading. “Just one simple change to the Payment Services Directive would put an end to debit card surcharges for good. The Treasury must act quickly to do this before other businesses jump on the bandwagon we all end up paying even more.”

From 2nd November, Lufthansa and Swiss will charge a £4.50 fee on all payment card bookings. Earlier in the year 30th March 2011, Which? issued a super complaint to the OFT, asking it to investigate the practice of excessive card fees. The OFT responded at the end of June, stating that surcharges are misleading and detrimental to consumers. It recommended that the Government introduces measures to prohibit retailers from imposing surcharges for payments made by debit card. The OFT suggested implementing ‘The Consumer Rights Directive’, a new piece of legislation that has just been voted on in Europe but will take at least two years to implement in the UK. The CRD will limit surcharges rather than banning them.

Focus on this Studio to pick up a bargain FORD have launched their top-value version of the Focus, which cuts their lowest family hatchback range to just under £14,000 - a saving of £2,000. The new Focus 1.6 TI-VCT 85 Studio goes on sale next month, and this headline list price slots it in beneath the current £16,000 Focus 1.6 TIVCT 105 Edge lead-in car. They are launching this value-for-money Focus line because stocks of the outgoing Focus have finally sold out, after a more-than-impressive 15,000 deliveries since last October. Ford were using this model, in Sport trim, as a budget alternative to the all-new Focus for those who didn’t have upwards of £16,000. Now it has gone, and so Ford have extended the new range downwards, with the

new budget Studio trim line. Presumably, this move will not please those who have already forked out the 16 grand or so already for previous, sold-out model. But Nigel Sharp, Ford of Britain Managing Director, said: “With the high end of the new Focus range fully established, we are now making it easier for customers to get behind the wheel at the entry level. “And this new Studio model is not only affordable but it is also well-equipped, attractive and also economical.” He is absolutely right, and it’s not just sales talk from a Ford boss. The Focus Studio still has all the essentials: aircon is standard, as are electric windows and mirrors, ESP stability control, USB connectivity and a body-colour rear spoiler. The only significant visual different is a lack of alloys. Instead, Ford fit ‘alloy-style’ 16-inch wheel trims.

True, this model is slower than the current entry-level Ford Focus: the 85hp 1.6-litre engine producing 20hp less, although it’s no more fuel-efficient as a result. But 47.9mpg is still good

for petrol motor, though, as are CO2 emissions of 136g/km. The only real limiter they have imposed is colour. Ford offer the new Studio model in just three shades, and

only one of them, white, is a non-metallic, no-cost colour. So, here’s the only catch: unless you want a white Focus, your entry-level price will actually be £495 higher. Yet it’s a small price to

pay for a belter of a car at such a reasonable cost and the other bonus is that it will come out in time to coincide with the new September registration plates in the UK.

For sale: Limo that carried Pope and spacemen A LIMOUSINE used by Pope Paul VI and the Apollo 8 astronauts will be sold at auction next week in California. The 1964 Lincoln Continental was ordered by the Vatican to ferry the Pope around New York and later Chicago in the mid-Sixties. Then, in December 1968, it was used as transport by astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders, who made up the crew of NASA’s Apollo 8 mission. They were the first men to orbit the moon, and the limo was their transport at the celebration parade after their return to earth. It was subsequently used by the Apollo 11, 13 and 15 crews as well.

The Lincoln is well-equipped, with auxiliary power, climatecontrol systems and dual, rearfacing auxiliary seats - and that’s not all. When the Vatican placed the order, officials specified a few extras above and beyond the usual options list. These included a huge, 160inch wheelbase and an overall length of over 21 feet, step plates and handrails for security, additional interior seating for aides, a raised seat for the Pontiff, extra interior lighting and a PA system. It will be sold by classic-car auction specialist Bonhams next Friday, but the company have yet to release a realistic price for this unique motor. But bring loads of dosh if you’re thinking of bidding for it - or you won’t stand a prayer!

Match Report By Geoff Huxtable WE are almost one-third of the way through the season, and Bar Nauta A remain the only team in the League with a 100% record.

But they had to dig deep last Friday to earn a 5-3 win over a resilient La Central team, who pushed them all the way. Bar 180 A were also put through their paces at Target Army and had to win the trebles to take the three points. Visiting player Wayne hit his second 180 of the year during the match. Cozy Wanderers swatted the Gaffers aside 7-1, while The Pub’s 8-0 victory over Tavern included a first-ever game win for Scott. At Cafe Rood A, Phoenix Bar Captain Geoff gave Luc the fright of his life by taking the first two legs! But Luc stormed back with a 135 finish and took the opening rubber 3-2. Bubbles notched up a 116 checkout in a match the Los Abrigos team finally won 6-2. Barracudarts Boys won eight more games than they did the previous week as they thrashed bottom side Bar 180 B, and Yelas Bar’s miraculous turnaround continued with a 5-3 success at home

to the X-Men. Elsewhere, Toscales Tornados and Valle Vikings 1 also recorded 5-3 home wins. The eagled-eyed among you may just notice that not a single home win was recorded in Division 2. However, Sundowners have now won 10 of their first 11 matches and sit proudly at the top. The Knights’ promotion push continued apace after they claimed the three points at Palms Sports Bar, and Ourplace Naturals sit in third spot after enjoying an entertaining and winning evening against the Bad Girls/Boys. Hot on the heels of the top three are Sunshine Bar. They emerged victorious at Trap Door, while Naughty Nautas’ Pete hit a 106 check-out as his team won by the same 6-2 margin over Barracuda Hunters. Jo-Jo won her first-ever game for Phoenix Flames, but her team fell to a home defeat at the hands of Valle Vikings 6-2, and Cafe Rood B remain in contention for promotion after taking all the points from Marilyns. The Playgirls had to take the trebles game to earn a point at home to La Cana Lancers, matching the same feat as Lucky Leprechaun, who shared the spoils with Tenerife Sun.

Big guns start with a bang OASIS Fm Pool League’s brand-new season got underway on Tuesday night, and there are an amazing 50 teams competing in it. In Division One, defending champions Palms A avenged one of only two defeats last season as they spanked Trap Door 8-2. The hosts were never at the races, and the same can be said for traditional yardsticks Hoops. They would have been whitewashed by Summerland Superstars if Penguin had won the last singles match. Phoenix Knights were on the bunny as they battered Dreamers 8-2, while Atlantis Sharks and Target Bar got solid, opening-night wins. Two of the promoted sides started with victories. Tasca beat Bar 180 A 7-3, but the visitors twice went in off the black. and Legends nicked a tight one at fellow-new boys Bar 180 C.

Page 46

Gaffers, last season’s Division Two champs, were given a reality check as they crashed 6-4 at home to Terrace Bar A. Tenerife Hammers A were champions two seasons ago, but their new-look side will have to gel quickly if they are to challenge, judging by their draw at Toscales Old Boys. League stalwarts Lupain set the early pace in Division Two after a fine 9-1er at Barracuda Hunters. Bar La Caña bounced back from last season’s relegation with a fine 7-3 win at Palms B, while fancied sides Barracuda Bandits and Summerland Elite gained their expected wins. Tenerife Hammers C opened up with a fine win over Toscales A-Team, while Wandabar A produced the win of the night at Terrace B. From 4-2 down they suddenly found their form with Colin sinking the winning last black.

Atlantis Crew and Nauta B should be thereabouts at the end of the season, and their draw was no surprise, but Inn The Pink’s loss at Phoenix Potters was. Inn The Pink finished last season like a train and their 6-4 defeat against a decent Phoenix side is a real wakeup call, especially to captain Gareth, who lost all three matches. Fourteen new teams form Division Three, and they all made respectable starts. C&A Titans were solid winners over Next Door, James Place got an away win at Dragon’s Denn, while favourites Exiles B will be delighted with their three points at Sunshine Bar. The Treehouse look strong, with Greg inspiring them to a 7-3er over Bull Ring Tavern. And Gaffers B also made a perfect start at Lucky Leprechaun, while it was honours even between The Office and Legendary Jokers.

Horoscopes of the week Leo

(July 24th-August 23rd) Mercury has returned to your sign, bringing with it some doubts and uncertainty over the people you’re dealing with. Try to react with calm deliberation if they make a comment you don’t like. Nothing is set in stone yet, so get those awkward creases ironed out while you can.

VIRGO (August 24thSeptember 23rd) You’re starting the week with a bright, positive outlook, but bad moods and disharmony from others, possibly connected to money matters you won’t budge on, casts a cloud over your home life. There’s confrontation brewing, so think before you speak or you’ll only make it worse. LIBRA (September 24th -October 23rd) Take scandalous news with a pinch of salt, and, unless you hear it from the horse’s mouth, consider it to be hearsay and gossip. The Mars/ Uranus influence has been making people hot-tempered and temperamental, but tries not to join in if you really want things to be calm at home. Don’t rise to the bait. SCORPIO (October 24thNovember 22nd) It’s hard to see clearly as you don’t quite know which direction to take next over career ambitions. You know making major changes will be a risk, but you also know that things can’t continue as they are. Don’t allow your restlessness to build to a crescendo. Stay calm. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) Are you deliberately deceiving someone, or are they doing it to you? Or has something just been lost in translation? The air is rife with confusion and crossed

Page 48

wires, and communications have gone awry. Before you accuse anyone, get your facts straight. Live and learn. CAPRICORN (December 22ndJanuary 20th) P owe r- s t r u g g l e s in a relationship or friendship have reached epic proportions and it has now gone too far to laugh off the situation. The only way to restore the balance is to raise the white flag to see if you can reach a compromise. Be the bigger person here and make the first move. AQUARIUS (January 21stFebruary 19th) Be sceptical about information you’re being given at work as someone seems to be trying to pull the wool over your eyes, perhaps to put you off the track. You weren’t born yesterday, but play along with them. They may tell you something important without thinking. Watch for deception PISCES (February 20thMarch 20th) Distractions can throw you off the path in your everyday dealings at work and home, so if you ever want to get anything done, you’ll need to focus. Take a reality check. The moon in your sign on Sunday makes you extra sensitive, so don’t take what others say to heart. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) Unexpected news throws even the best-laid plans

into chaos, but as long as you stay calm and apply some damage control, you’ll salvage the bulk of those plans. Use your drive energy and courage to lead everyone to a successful outcome. Kick twists and turns into touch. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) Uncertainty and confusion over your emotional life leaves you feeling vulnerable and exposed, but don’t allow stress and worry to lead you into taking impulsive actions which you may regret at a later date. Try to think clearly about what you want to achieve in the long term. Breathe! GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) You’re feeling a bit out of your depth on many levels, whether over work money or love, so don’t just believe what you want to believe because it suits your purposes. Keeping a low profile and sorting things out realistically will give you a better chance to reach long term success. CANCER (June 22ndJuly 23rd) Have another look at a financial situation before even thinking about putting your name on the dotted line. If something doesn’t feel right, you’d be best to stall until you have all the facts. Avoid extravagance, keep moods light at work and don’t ruffle anyone’s feathers.
