TENERIFE STAR SET FOR BGT GLORY TENERIFE ENTERTAINMENT AWARD winner Shane HaighSousa will fly the flag for our local entertain scene when he stars in Britain’s Got Talent.

Shane will showcase his hugely successful Mister Sister show on UK national television in the next couple of days as he looks to become a household name. He made it through the initial auditions in front of the show’s producers and will now face the big name judges David Walliams, Amanda Holden, Alicia Dixon and a certain Simon Cowell! Shane has already been featured in a few national magazines and newspapers in the UK in the build up to the show. This week Shane was interviewed on Oasis Fm and also popped into the Canarian Weekly for a chat. Shane, a larger-than-

life character in civvies and equally impressive as a drag queen, wears the most outrageous, over-the-top outfits as he mimes his way through his outrageous act. He describes himself as a “comedy character illusionist” and is a regular in the Is-

land’s top hotels and showbars. And he cannot wait to appear on telly in Britain’s Got Talent. The show has actually been filmed already, but he is under strict orders not to divulge whether he has passed the initial audition - under the watchful, critical eyes of Simon Cowell and Co. What he can reveal, though, in all its glory, is the incredible costume he wore on his big night at the ITV studios, where the show is filmed. “Actually, I couldn’t wait to get it over with because I’d been standing around all day, waiting nervously to go on,” he said. “I was wearing this huge dress, wig and tiara, which weighed a ton. “But in the end, it helped calmed my nerves and I really enjoyed myself. But it really is a tough ordeal for all the contestants because you have to do and say exactly what you’re told when they’re filming backstage.” Shane was bedecked in the most ridiculous, overblown, bright-pink dress, which lifted him up and up as the voice got higher and higher during a number from Verdi’s renowned opera La Traviata.

But was it good enough to impress the judges? “You’ll just have to wait and see,” said Shane. “I honestly can’t say.” Whether or not he has made it is almost irrelevant because he will almost certainly have given his career a massive boost. The likeable 36-yearold, who is openly gay, owes all the incredible gear he wears to his

partner, Fabio, who is actually his reallife “husband”. They cemented their relationship over here four years ago and have been together eight years in all - and it’s not just because Fabio is a dressmaker of the highest quality, who designs and puts together all his outfits. I’ll come up with an idea, sketch it out for him and he’ll get cracking straight away,” said

Shane, who hails from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and moved here 12 years ago to escape the “drudgery of England”. But how on earth did Shane create his Mister Sister role? “I started working as a holiday rep in Greece and was transferred here after a couple of years,” he said. “Gradually, I got on to the entertainment scene in the hotels where I worked,” he said. “I was then invited to become half of a comedy duo on the circuit, and this lasted about five years. But I was bored in the end and decided to branch out on my own. Shane came up with the ultra-camp Mister Sister idea and he was determined to produce a completely over-thetop show, with no holds barred. Shane and Fabio also construct the “magic” parts underneath the dresses to create all sorts of illusions for audiences, who love it. Well, most of them do. One night, though, he appeared at an upmarket hotel which attracts many Scandinavians, and never drew an ounce of applause throughout his act. “I was getting more and more down about it because it had never happened before,” said Shane. “Then, right at the end, when I’d taken my finished, the place went ballistic. “I had no idea that Scandinavians believe it is offensive to the artiste to show any sort of appreciation during a show. But they didn’t half make up for it when I’d finished. It was such a relief.” So popular is Shane that he puts on two to three shows daily, each lasting some 45 minutes. And, as a measure of his talent, he is never short of work! He could be in even bigger demand once TV viewers get a sample of his talent - on the biggest talent show of all. And it won’t just be that dress lifting him higher and higher!

Surprise, surprise, South Hospital delayed - again! IT’S the news nobody in the South wanted to hear… but everybody was probably expecting it just the same.

The opening of the new hospital at El Mojon has been delayed for the umpteenth time, despite recent promises from the Cabildo. A number of dignitaries, including Canaries Government President Paulino Rivero and Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, visited the site on Monday. They were accompanied by Government engineers and lawyers as they toured the ground floor of the new building. Completion date for the First Phase has now been moved from November to the end of December or early next year, according to Alonso. He insists the Specialised Care Centre (CAE),

Emergency, Day Hospital and Mental Health units will definitely be ready to open then. They will be the first departments to transfer from their current prefabricated buildings at El Mojon to bright, modern units there. Alonso said: “A total of 10 million euros has been set aside for construction, employment and, particularly, the relevant paperwork for this phase.” Despite this latest hiccup, Rivero also remains optimistic, saying: “We are much closer to the goal of significantly improving health care in this part of the Island. “Once in operation, the long-awaited venture will relieve some of the pressure on the Island’s main hospitals in Santa Cruz.” The El Mojon Second Phase includes operating theatres, delivery rooms and wards, and Alonso has pledged that they will be built, de-

spite the economic situation, which is still “very difficult”. Alonso added: “In other Spanish regions, work on health centres has been virtually paralysed, unless they are privatised projects. “But the projects will continue in Tenerife,

thanks to a firm commitment from the Government and the Cabildo.” Meanwhile, Rivero outlined the functions of the El Mojon Day Hospital, which will see the opening of 10 separate units, to include oncology, rheumatology and haematology. In

addition, he said, there will be a specialist care centre with 56 consulting rooms, a physiotherapy centre and separate areas for adult and paediatric patients. The emergency department, housed in its 1,800sq.m area, will provide resuscitation, ob-

servation and treatment units. Finally, there will be plenty of parking, which will come as a huge relief to all those patients who have struggled to find a space to put their car. Just as soon as the hospital itself opens, of course!

South airport must be upgraded to boost the economy, says Mayor GRANADILLA Mayor Jaime González Cejas has stressed the need for major improvements at the South’s Reina Sofia airport to help boost the economy.

But he believes that the Cabildo and Canary Island Government are both content to keep it on the back-burner. Cejas feels the airport needs “significant” investment to improve its services because, he says: “It is a fundamental element for the development of tourism on the Island.” He also says the upgrading of Los Rodeos airport in the North has taken priority, even

though Reina Sofia handles over six million passengers a year - the vast majority comprising tourists. As all business people

know, the tourism industry is bolstering the Island’s economy, and Cejas points out that Reina Sofia is Spain’s sixth-most-profitable

airport. And that should be reason enough, he insists, for more funding towards modernisation and improvements to passenger comfort.

A commission created between the Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA), the Civil Aviation Authority, the regional government and the municipalities of La Laguna and Granadilla will address the issues faced by both airports. Cejas is part of that commission, and he hopes it will propose appropriate measures for each airport. He adds that Tenerife’s ports and airports should not be considered solely as businesses, but also as supplying a basic public service on which the country’s prosperity relies. Further development of the industrial area close to the airport is about to be approved, according to Cejas, who says that the clearing

of plots in readiness for building may not be too far away. He also suggests that the rocks from siteclearing can be utilised to build a breakwater at the outer edge of the harbour which, as yet, has a base only. Suspension by the Supreme Court of the work on the so-called Logistics Platform (the port, airport and industrial estate), was down to issues with the plan itself, says Cejas, who adds that “certain problems” are now being resolved. These include a dispute with the Civil Aviation Authority over clear air, which now been resolved, and an ongoing project with the Water Board regarding industrial area gullies.

Drugs gang stay busted! A NUMBER of drug-related convictions dating back to investigations since 2007 are to stand, following a Supreme Court ruling.

It was initially made by the Provincial Court last February and has stood up to scrutiny by the Supreme Court. The appeals involved sentences totalling over 140 years for 20 of the defendants indicted. All but three had launched appeals against their sentences, and all were

rejected. The Puerto de la Cruz group controlled bars, restaurants and brothels. And telephone evidence came from a German man, believed to be head of the organisation. The investigations began in July 2007, when evidence of a major criminal group operating on the Island was uncovered. Part of the case referred to the attempted abduction of an Italian citizen, who was detained at the time. He was thought to be involved in a cocainetrafficking operation between South America

Teno road open on summer weekends SAFETY improvements on the TF-445 road to Punta de Teno, on Tenerife’s western tip have suffered several delays since beginning last September. Bad weather made it impossible until recently to finish the first phase - scheduled for completion in January. But there is a little ray of light for the numerous tourists who want to visit the picturesque spot in the summer months. The road will be definitely open at weekends, according to Cabildo Road Councillor José Luis Delgado. The first phase experienced further delays through landslides and rockfalls - following a fierce storm - which meant that repairs to tarmac and barriers dug further into the budget. The second phase should be completed “in the next few weeks” according to Delgado, who said this phase placed more protection at the roadside and up the rock face, as

well as improving lighting in the tunnel. The road should be open to traffic “at least during weekends in July and August”. But this depends on safety standards being met, and the project signed off. The budget for the renovation and repair work exceeds 600,000 euros, and the road has been completely closed since last September. The contract for the initial phase was awarded to local company Villar Trabajos Verticales Canarios, because of its excellent knowledge of the terrain A helicopter was used for parts of the reinforcement work, to help stabilise the mesh structures which will catch falling rocks; again. But bad weather and safety concerns hampered work and led to delays. The section of the TF445 being renovated stretches for 3.3km. It runs through a mountainous area with steep slopes, which is why the retaining mesh structures are essential.

and Italy. But allegations were eventually unsupported. In another part of the investigation, a former acquaintance of the German is said to have alluded to huge drug shipments from Colombia - as much as 300 kilos per quarter. The report also mentioned a couple known as “The Añaza Twins”, said to have been behind the distribution of drugs once on the Is-

land. The German explained that it took several years to attain his position in the organisation, during which time he was involved in the trafficking of cocaine, hashish and MDMA, as well as other criminal activities. He also revealed that he had at least two state-employed security officers on his payroll, which allowed the continuation of operations. But these have not been

identified in the investigations. The group were also said to include two other German men and a woman, who were considered the “inner circle,” responsible for distribution among key customers. In a series of 2007 arrests, some small drug shipments were intercepted, but those arrested were released on bail, only to continue their operation.

That included the rental of a Puerto de la Cruz Italian restaurant, which served as the main distribution point for their drugs. Further arrests were made, including employees of a clothing store, and relatives of the German and others. These arrests extended to a bar in Los Realejos, and also into the Island’s capital, Santa Cruz.

Spain pensioners are in the money THERE are strong signs that Spain is slowly getting back on its feet after the credit crunch.

And it seems that some of this goodwill is finding its way into the pockets of pensioners. According to official figures released this week, the Social Security handed out eight billion euros in pensions this month, which was 3.3% more than in the same period last year. But this includes a healthy rise to every pensioner because the average pension is up 2.1% compared with a year ago This inflation-busting rise will please pensioners just a year before the next General Election, and Prime Minister

Mariano Rajoy is coming good on his promise to put more money in people’s pockets. But this amazing increase has raised eyebrows as the Spanish recovery is still viewed as extremely fragile and the country is experiencing a 0.25% deflation, rather than inflation. For the whole of Spain, the average pension is 996.23 euros a month, while the average in the Canary Islands is 810.25

euros, according to Ministry of Employment and Social Security. Spanish pensions, like welfare payments, are weighed according to local contributions and the cost of living. So pensions in Madrid, average, 1027.87 euros, are superior to Andalusia, where the average is 787.75 euros. The Basque Region and pensioners in the capital get the most money, and seven regions exceed the na-

tional average pension. These include Basque Country (1,072.94 euros), plus Madrid and Asturias (1,025.66), who have the biggest payout. The Canarias are ranked in the middle, while pensioners in the Balearics (796.56), Murcia (765.85), Galicia (731.73) and Extremadura (731.17) get the least. In Spain, like many countries, there are different types of pensions: retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood and family. And all these different “bands” had a healthy increase. The average widow’s pension this month stood at 623 euros per month, up 1%, while the permanent disability averaged a monthly sum of 914.35, an increase of 0.9%.

Also, the average orphan’s pension amounted to 3 69.84 per month, up 0.5% from April 2013, while the total for family members stood at 507.07 a month - a rise of 1.6%. In total, the Social Security paid pensions to 9,172,026 people for April, which was the highest ever. The near-1,000-euro average pension is seen by many European states as over-generous, but Spain has a rich history of looking after its citizens. Its pension compares favourably with the average wage in Spain, which is officially 1,615 euros per month. This is 17% lower than the European average, but it is a lopsided figure because rich countries like Switzerland, whose average monthly

wage is over 4,000 euros, or Norway (3,554 euros), inflate the figures artificially. Rajoy’s government is neck and neck with the opposition in the latest opinion polls. The Prime Minister has suffered public unrest recently following his austerity measures and his unpopular stance on the abortion reforms. But he is earning brownie points for his strong stance on keeping Spain intact, and fighting any independence from Catalonia. He is also seen as a better statesman than Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, and this week’s pension boost will also prove popular in the next General Election, which must be held before 21st December 2015.

Cheeky cable thieves go back for seconds! ELECTRICAL cable worth more than 100,000 euros has been stolen from the Adeje area in the last two weeks.

The thieves have even returned to the scene of one robbery and helped themselves again, and Municipal Services Councillor Gonzalo Delgado Díaz, has asked locals to be vigilant. “These thefts are difficult to police,” he said. “We are asking neighbours and residents who see any suspicious activity by people near or at street installations to phone the local police on 922 74 72 06 or the emergency number 112.

“Anyone officially authorised to handle this cable and open street boxes, etc, will be wearing distinctive red uniforms with a council logo. “So if you see anyone not wearing this uniform behaving suspiciously, please call the numbers above.” Zones affected are spread across the borough, particularly in Fañabé, Callao Salvaje, Tijoco, La Hoya, Los Olivos, Las Torres, Armeñime and El Galeón. Councillor Delgado Diaz added: “This is a borough-wide problem, and in some cases, cable has been stolen twice from the same location. “We will obviously step up the police presence in zones considered vulnerable, but

we need your help.” He stressed that these sort of crimes were also potentially dangerous to passers-by and children along affected pavements because it could increase the risk of injury. “In many cases, the stolen cable is the ‘earth’ cable which protects from electrocution,” he warned. The Councillor also revealed that these thefts had direct repercussions on council budgets, because replacing the missing cable would require monies to be found from other council projects. “If it continues, it will cause serious budgeting problems, which is why we are asking for everyone to be so vigilant,” he said.

Doomed copter - bodies found BODIES thought to be two crew members, who perished in last month’s Army helicopter crash between Las Palmas and Fuerteventura, have been recovered by an underwater robot. A further two bodies and much of the doomed copter’s wreckage were also found on Monday. A helicopter from the 802 Squadron, to which the missing machine and crew were attached, took the remains to the Las Palmas naval base, and

from there to forensic experts for identification. An Air Force helicop-

ter is still conducting searches, and the robot, supplied by Phoenix International Company, is

continuing to survey the area, about 55 kilometres off Fuerteventura’s south-west coast.

All the best, mate! WE are coming to the end of moving season. Most of the Swallows have flown north for the winter, and those who have had enough are on their way. The new batch are also starting to make their nest, ready to either start a new chapter in the sun, or maybe just a short season to get away from it all. I’ve always felt you have to live here for at least three years to be a fully-paid-up resident. And in my experience, once you pass that mark, you are here for the long haul. So it takes something special to up sticks after all that time. This Wednesday, marks the end of an era when Paul Fitzpatrick plays his final gig with the Dubliner Band. I’ve known Paul too many years - and had too many drunken nights with him! Tenerife will not be the same when he packs away his keyboard for the last time, and I know many will feel the same way. Along with Daniel and Danny, they made the Dubliner something

special, and I’ve enjoyed watching it evolve over the years. Paddy’s Day will never quite be the same again. Paul, his wife Alison and little Max will be settled in to their new life in time for their fifth wedding anniversary and I wish them all the luck in the world. I’m sure he will get the send-off he deserves and, who knows, maybe Felipe will even open a bottle or two of Champagne! As the poem should have gone: Man strives for glory, honour, fame, So that all the world may know his name. Amasses wealth by brain and band. Becomes a power on his land. But when he nears the end of life, And looks back over the years of strife, He finds that happiness depends On none of these, but the love of friends.

Foreigners hit the road AROUND 10% of the Canary Islands’ foreign population have departed in the last two years.

And their absence has contributed to the archipelago’s general population drop, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The number of foreigners registered to vote has dropped by 16,000 since January 2013, al-

though the NIE says that as many as 34,000 have actually left the Islands. But Tenerife has the most pronounced drop, NIE stats showing that 11,000 foreign visitors have gone. Also, it records, 19% of the Tenerife population were born outside Spain. The western province, comprising La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife, has a population of 1,003,717. Of these, 717,401 were

born in the province. And 17,749 were born in the eastern province, consisting of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. By contrast, 14,807 people born in the western province reside in the eastern one. Looking at Spanish nationals living in the western province, 16,007 were born in Andalucía, 11,402 in Madrid, and 9,602 in Galicia. Less well-represented are those from Soria (190)

and Teruel (200). The NIE also showed that the Canary Islands, as an autonomous community, has the least municipalities with under 1,000 inhabitants just one in all - Betancuria in Fuerteventura. Finally, 40% of the Canary Islands’ population are concentrated in the four areas with over 100,000 inhabitants: Las Palmas and Telde in Gran Canaria, and Tenerife’s Santa Cruz and La Laguna.

Foreign tourists put Canaries in top spot FOREIGN visitors to the Canary Islands in the first quarter of 2014 have topped a Tourist Movement table.

The Islands welcomed more than 3.1 million visitors, up 10.6% on 2013, and accounted for a mammoth 31% of all foreigners going to Spain between January and March. The figures come from the Survey of Tourist Movement Frontera (Frontur), by the Ministry for Industry, Energy and Tourism. All the major markets posted increases of over 5%, with visitors from Germany up 8.2% over 2013, and accounting for an improved market share of 12.1%. The Canaries again demonstrated their popularity as a desti-

nation for Scandinavia visitors, those opting for package holidays rising by 6.1%. According To Frontur, international tourism is up 7.2% on the same

period last year, with 10.1 million foreign visitors coming here. In percentage terms, France had an 11.5% Increase, equal to 1.6 million visitors and

placing it third behind the UK and Germany in “market importance. The Scandinavians were fourth on the list, improving 7.8% with 1.2 million visitors, fol-

lowed by Italy (up 9%, 545.892 visitors). The Canaries accounted for 31% of all foreign arrivals, followed by Catalonia, up 9.8% and 25.3% of the

total. The increase of foreign arrivals in Catalonia has been attributed in part to large increases in the number of visitors from Germany and Asia. Andalucia was third (up 3.9%, 11.6% of the total). But in contrast to the mainly positive figures, the Balearic Islands experienced a sharp drop of 24.4%, to just 416.001 visitors (4.1% of the total). Availability of flights from the main UK and German markets had a significant effect on the figures. Air travel accounted for 81.1% of visitors (up 7.5%), followed by road travel (16.6%, up 5.9%). As for accommodation, hotels were the most popular option, with 65.6% of visitors choosing all the comforts - up 8.2% on the same period last year.

President Park insists: Tragedy ferry skipper ‘murdered hundreds’ SOUTH Korean President Park Geun-Hye has virtually accused the captain and some crew members of the tragic South Korean ferry of murdering hundreds of passengers.

Officials state that at least 171 people have died and 131 others remain missing, presumed dead - mainly schoolchildren. And Ms Park claimed it was increasingly clear that Captain Lee JoonSeok had delayed the evacuation needlessly as the capsized Sewol began sinking. She told a Cabinet meeting early this week: “What the captain and part of the crew did is unfathomable - unforgivable, murderous behaviour.” She criticised 69-yearold Lee for “deserting the passengers by escaping first”, and added: “Legally and ethically, this is an unimaginable act.” She stressed that all parties connected to the disaster - the owners, safety inspectors and crew - would be investigated, and all those responsible would be held “criminally accountable”. Her comments came as local TV stations aired a 2010 promotional video in which Lee said ferries

offered the safest public transport “as long as you follow the instruction of our crew”. The video shows a smiling Lee, in his captain’s whites, promising a “safe and comfortable” journey from the western port of Incheon to the southern resort island of Jeju - the same route taken by the illfated Sewol. Lee was arrested on Saturday, together with a helmsman and the ship’s relatively-inexperienced third officer, who was in charge of the bridge when disaster struck. Lee was charged with negligence and failing to secure the safety of the passengers, most of

them children, travelling to Jeju on a school trip. Senior prosecutor Ahn Sang-don said four more crew members - two first mates, one second mate and a chief engineer - have been detained on allegations of failing to protect passengers and abandoning ship. Lee and the crew, most of whom escaped the ferry, have faced criticism for delaying the order to abandon ship. It was, possibly, a fatal error of judgement before the vessel, with 476 people on board, submerged fully last Wednesday. Investigations are also focusing on whether

problems with cargo stowage and structural defects of the vessel might have led to the ship capsizing. Attempts to rescue more bodies from the ferry, now completely submerged, are continuing. But the appalling conditions are making it extremely difficult for them. A government spokesman said ministers were putting into place measures to make it easier for families to collect the bodies of their loved ones. He also said additional funding for the search and recovery operation would be made available if needed. Meanwhile, the Dan-

won High School’s viceprincipal, who was one of those rescued, has been found hanged. Kang Min-Kyu, 52, was one of more than 300 teachers and students on board the Sewol ferry and was reported missing last Thursday night. The 52-year-old’s body was found near the school gymnasium on Jindo island, where many of the relatives and rescued people have been staying. Police officers reportedly found a suicide note in his wallet, which read: “Surviving alone is too painful while 200 remain unaccounted for. I take full responsibility. I pushed ahead with the school trip.

“I will once again become a teacher in the afterlife for my students whose bodies have not been discovered.” Meanwhile, life still goes on in South Korea, where the school is holding classes again. Most of the students who survived the disaster remain in hospital, but final-year students returned to school yesterday (Thursday). Dozens of counsellors have been brought in to help with the trauma many of the children are expected to face. The Danwon school has become a memorial site over the past week, with people holding services for the dead there.

Spain dining at top table again SPAIN will finally have a representative on the European Food Safety Authority Management Board - at least for four years!

The EU decision begins on 30th June and runs until 2018. And it means Spain will be represented on Europe’s highest authority on food safety for the first time since 2006. The announcement came after the Council of the European Union agreed to appointing seven new members to the body, chosen by the Member States.

Following a proposal from the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Spanish Government presented Iñaki Eguileor, who is recognised in the field of Chemical Science and Public Health. Eguileor is a Doctor of Pharmacy, a Bachelor of Chemical Science and a Master of Public Health. He is also an auditor with more than 15 years’ experience in the assessment of organisations in the agri-food industry, which requires accreditation of competence according to international regulations. Eguileor is a member of various advisory committees for the Chemical and Microbio-

logical Analysis Laboratory Aptitude Test Programmes. And he was Director for Public Health for the Basque Country’s Regional Government between 1991 and 1996. The EFSA Management Board members are responsible for ensuring the independence, high scientific quality, transparency and efficiency of this body. Besides Eguileor, Stella Canna Michaelidou, Jan Mousing, Raymond O’Rourke, András Székács, Robert Van Gorcom and Pieter Vanthemsche have also been appointed to the EFSA Management Board.

Maritime sector bids to create 20,000 jobs THE Canaries’ Maritime Cluster, comprising more than 50 companies and government agencies, is aiming to double its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

That’s the market value of all officially-recognised goods and services produced within a country in a year). The group is keen to move up, from 6% to 12% by 2020, meaning it would the number of employees to 40,000 workers in the sector. This objective relies heavily on the implementation of 100-plus

courses of action, as outlined in its 2014-2020 Strategy Document. It was presented on Tuesday by the Cluster’s president, Vicente Marrero, who was accompanied by José Luis García, head of the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce. Marrero said that the document outlined opportunities the sector could tap into to double its economic potential in the Canaries. He also stressed that collaboration between public and private entities was necessary. The document, he said, was not a final point in the process, but more a jumping-off point from which to develop. A 52-event series is planned to promote its

ideas throughout the islands. Among the initiatives will be subjects as diverse as ship repair, port services, transport and maritime security, fisheries, desalination, aquaculture, cruise and offshore activities. There will also be introductory courses in renewable energy and marine biotechnology. The announcement came a week after the European Fisheries’ Commission released a statement saying that around 6.5 billion euros will be invested in the European Maritime and Fisheries’ Fund (EMFF), to provide financial assistance to European fisheries, fish farmers - and to boost jobs in the maritime industry.

Confident Rajoy eyeing Spanish growth in 2014 SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has told parliament that the measures adopted by his government are producing results.

He was also adamant that Spain would post growth for the first time in many years - and create stable jobs in the months to come. Rajoy reiterated his willingness to enter into talks about Catalonia, provided such talks were held within the confines of the law. The PM stressed that his government had successfully avoided a bail-out, overcame a financial crisis and a sovereign debt crisis. It also made efforts to re-

duce the public deficit and restructured the financial system. Furthermore, he reiterated his announcement during the Debate on the State of the Nation that

Spanish economic growth in 2014 would reach 1%. But he hinted that this figure could increase. “The situation is improving, and it would not be a bad

idea to recognise that fact,” he told ministers. “We still have much work to do, and I cannot be satisfied as long as there are more than 5.5 million unemployed in this country.

“Nonetheless, I am glad to see that many of the measures adopted by the Government of Spain are producing results, and that we are going to post positive growth this year. “And, for the first time in many years, we are creating stable jobs in our country.” The PM also highlighted the positive export and tourism figures: the foreign trade sector is posting a surplus; the risk premium stands at 155 basis points; credit is starting to flow; and the sale of vehicles and industrial output is on the rise,” he said. Rajoy was replying to Marcelino Iglesias, spokesman for the Socialist Parliamentary Group, who asked for an assessment on the optimism from the

Government regarding the country’s future, when compared with the sense of pessimism among the people. Meanwhile Josep Lluís Cleries, MP for the Catalan Nationalist Party, again raised the subject of independence for his region in parliament this week. Rajoy repeated his stance on holding a referendum in Catalonia, insisting his duty was to defend the law. That means, he said, that he cannot transfer the power to call a referendum; nor strip the Spanish people as a whole “of their right to decide on what they want their country to be”. He recalled that during the 8th April debate concerning this matter, his position was supported by the vast majority of MPs.

Food conference aims at tackling new regulations TENERIFE is preparing to host a major conference on food security in Adeje from 7-9th May.

The main objective of the 23rd annual National Conference on Food Safety is to study the difficulties of implementing new food regulations. It will also focus on

scientific and technical issues which arise in the pursuit of safer food. José Joaquín Bethencourt, the Cabildo’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, said: “food safety is something you cannot compromise on, even in times of economic crisis.” He added that staging the conference on the Island involves strengthening Tenerife

as a destination for congresses, and confirming the councils’ commitment to this matter. “It would be illogical for an island like Tenerife, which aims to source food locally, to ignore the safety of food consumed.” he said. The conference, organised by the Association of Veterinary Food Safety (Avesa), is aimed at individuals or institutions which are, some-

how, part of the food chain - especially those involved in the supply of meat. Adeje Tourism chief Rafael Dolado said “Food security is already in our plans as we look to maintain the quality of the tourism industry.” There are believed to be 19,000 registered food businesses in Tenerife, of which 48% comprising local catering,

such as bars and restaurants. Paloma García, Food Safety Director for General Public Health, said: “Of the 14,360 inspections conducted last year, only a small percentage were proposed for sanction, which means that the sector has gained a great responsibility for the safety of products offered for consumption.”

Hospitals can cure silent kidney killer AT LEAST 1,000 hospital patients die unnecessarily from kidney failure in England each month.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), known as the “silent killer” can go unnoticed by medical staff. But according to a study commissioned by the NHS, “good basic care” would save those lives, Researchers found that AKI leads to more than 30 excess deaths a day, or between 15,000 and 40,000 a year. And it is five times more prevalent in English hospitals than previously thought. Experts say the medical staff must ensure that patients are hydrated, and that those having surgery should not go without water for longer than two hours. Severe dehydration is one of the main causes of the condition, which involves a loss of kidney function and can cause

the heart, lungs and brain to stop working properly. It can lead to rapid deterioration, leaving many patients dying - and those who do recover are at increased risk of long-term kidney disease. AKI can even affect people with no history of kidney disease, and it can occur in people who are already ill with conditions such as heart failure or diabetes, and those admitted to hospital with infections. Acute Kidney Injury can also develop after major surgery, such as some types of heart surgery, because the kidneys can be deprived of normal blood flow during the procedure. It costs the NHS more than £1bn every year and is responsible for nearly eight times as many deaths as the MRSA superbug at its peak, the study found. Report co-author Professor Donal O’Donoghue, consultant renal physician

Casino staff will be well taken care of CABILDO President Carlos Alonso insists that the Island’s three casinos will be sold, as planned, with a contract clause to include “the welfare” of present staff.

The state-owned gambling concerns have accumulated huge losses of over 15 million euros in a few years. And not even promising first-quarter profits of around 1m euros for 2014 can influence the outcome. Alonso is adamant the casinos, in Las Americas, Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz will be sold - with the emphasis placed firmly on the promotion of

tourism-related projects, and the current staff. He said in a radio interview: “Despite recent performances, the casinos present a significant risk to the council because of the accumulated debt.” Alonso added that the Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz casinos had endured major problems, racking up substantial businesses loans. The President said it was not worth risking their financial health by keeping them on, when selling them to tourist activity would encourage investment in the Island. He also confirmed that the welfare of the current staff would be included in the conditions of sale.

at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, said: “These deaths are avoidable. “This is completely unacceptable, and we can’t allow it to continue. Good basic care would save these lives, and save the NHS millions of pounds. “Doctors and nurses need to make elemen-

tary checks to prevent AKI. In general, people who are having surgery shouldn’t be asked to go without water for longer than two hours. “Sometimes that is unavoidable, but medical staff need to check that their patients are not becoming dehydrated.” Two years ago, Maura Murray’s kidneys all

but failed. She fell ill at home, having had surgery on a broken leg. The sickness led to severe dehydration and renal failure - or AKI. Ms Murray says six GPs failed to see the signs and, in the end, her husband called an ambulance. She told Sky News: “Why didn’t somebody

listen to me in the first place? Why did I suffer from dehydration? I’m sure some of the doctors should have known what was wrong.” More mistakes were then made in hospital. A lack of trained staff meant a routine replacement of her drip was delayed by two days. Ms Murray added: “I was left without fluids or anti-biotics until the Monday morning, until another nurse could put a cannula in my arm. So even though they knew I was dehydrated, I was very ill and I was without fluids.” An NHS spokesman said: “We have taken steps to ensure we put in place coherent longterm plans to reduce avoidable deaths in our hospitals, and to improve the way data is used in decision-making. “Health research based on real-life evidence like this is vitally important for NHS commissioners in choosing where to target their resources.”

We just love olive oil! CANARY Islanders consume more olive oil than most Spanish regions, with households rather than restaurants leading the way.

Those living in the Canaries, Galicia, Cantabria and Asturias favour olive oil above all others, according to an eating study commissioned by the Ministry for Agriculture, Food and the Environment. Nearly 70% of all cooking oils in homes in these areas comes from olives and is used, particularly, by couples with older children, couples without children and pensioners. Cooking oil consumption rose by 3.3% in Spain in 2013 - a total of 65 634 420 litres -

which means the average person used nearly 14 litres a year. Olive oil last year more than doubled sales of its

closest rival, sunflower oil (27.4%). Also, because of rising costs, sales of edible oils rose by 19.1%

to 1,518 million euros, accounting for 2.19% of the average home’s food budget, says the survey.

THE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were found scratching about on Wednesday on a short visit to Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

But they were far from idle because their attention turned to DJing when they met around 100 young musicians at the Northern Sound System. It is an alternative learning centre which uses music to engage with disadvantaged young people. William and Kate watched some hip-hop dancing and a performance of original rap songs. They also had a go at scratching while

spinning some tracks on the DJ decks. “She was fantastic,” gushed Shane Petersen, a workshop facilitator in the hip-hop class. “But William can fly a helicopter, so it’s horses for courses.” William, a trained military helicopter pilot - now “retired” - spoke of his music tastes, saying: “I like house music. I still like a bit of rock’n’roll and the classics, and a bit of R’n’B.” The 31-year-old prince added a blue sky to an aerosol artwork, before watching a BMX and scooter display. Skateboarder Luke Haldenby presented the Duke and Duchess with a custom-made skateboard for their little prince, George. And Kate spoke with

six-year-old Lauren Stephenson, whose cancer has been in remission for two years and who handed the Duchess a bouquet of flowers. The Royal couple moved along the barricades lining the streets of Elizabeth to greet the crowds, shaking hands with well-wishers and accepting gifts. They then unveiled a plaque outside a new plaza, named in honour of Prince George. William and Kate later attended a civic reception at the Playford Civic Centre, before heading back to Canberra to be reunited with their son. The previous day, the couple visited the iconic Ayers Rock, now known as Uluru, but

they were forced to endure scorching heat and flies galore. As they watched the magical spectacle of Uluru changing from luminous red to deep purple, they were plagued by the swarm. Yet they maintained their composure while the world’s press captured the moment during a photocall lasting just 90 seconds. Their plight was spotted by a disarminglyhonest child, who told them: “You were both like, magic, when the photos were being taken. I was like, ‘How are they not swatting flies away’?” Kate laughed and said: “I know. It was difficult,” while William added: “They were all coming for us.”

Defendant is gunned down in courtroom A DEFENDANT in a gang-related trial was shot dead in court after authorities say he attempted to attack a witness. Siale Angilau, 25, was shot several times by a US marshal as he lunged toward the witness stand with a pen in an “aggressive, threatening manner”. said the FBI. Agency spokesman Mark Dressen said Angilau suffered at least one chest wound and was taken to hospital, where he later died. Perry Caldwell, who was in the courtroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, said he heard at least six shots. Mr Caldwell said the witness, believed to be in his mid-20s, was testifying about gang initiation. He was not injured. Mr Caldwell’s daughter, Sara Jacobson, said: “It was kind of traumatising.” She was in the courtroom with her father

to support Mr Caldwell’s mother, who was set to testify about being punched in the face during a 2002 holdup. Angilau was accused in a 29-count indictment filed in 2010 on charges of conspiracy, assault, robbery and weapons offences. Sixteen other alleged gang members were also named in the indictment. Angilau was also accused of assaulting a federal officer with a weapon in 2007. His attorney declined to answer questions as he left the courthouse. Dressen said it was standard procedure for defendants not to be restrained while in the courtroom.

Indian leopard a real pain in the backside! A HUNGRY leopard on the loose hid in the roof of a house in western India before attacking terrified locals.

The cat emerged through the roof tiles after being spotted by villagers in Ballarpur, Maharashtra.

They beat a hasty retreat - but one unfortunate man couldn’t quite keep up and was “punished” with a set of teeth in his backside. Another person was attacked as people tried to corner the beast, which looked as scared as those fleeing. But no serious injuries were reported. At the end of the

45-second video, filmed from a nearby rooftop, the leopard is seen trying to find refuge. Eventually it settles in a bathroom, peering out to make sure no one approaches. India’s Forestry Department eventually captured the animal and plans to release it into the wild.

Such scenes are occurring more often in India as illegal deforestation reduces animals’ habitat and forces them to wander around in search of food. Logging, earth-cutting and the extension of residential settlements and farmland into reserved forests and hillocks have also contributed.

Rapid growth of organ donations THE number of organ donations in the Canary Islands during the first three months of 2014 was up almost 77% on the same period last year.

Figures released by the Canarian Government this week show that 23 donors provided organs for 56 separate recipients, 42 receiving kidneys and 14 having liver transplants. The 56-recipient total is up 124% on the same period last year, con-

firming Spain’s place at the top of the global organ donation numbers. And that means people there are more likely to receive a transplant than anywhere else in the world. On 20th February, 16 donors provided organs for 45 transplants in Spain, one of which was carried out in the Canary Islands. But though the transplant record is impressive, proper functioning of the relevant medical institutions is required for it to carry on. And, sadly, the death of most donors!

Stars turn out for Peaches A GALAXY of stars paid their last respects on Monday to Peaches Geldof, who died two weeks ago in “unexplained” circumstances.

She was the daughter of Sir Bob Geldof, the Boomtown Rats singer. Model Kate Moss, musician Jools Holland and former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman gathered to say farewell to the 25-yearold at the private funeral. It was held at St Mary Magdalene and St Lawrence Church in Davington, near Faversham, where Peaches married musician Tom Cohen - the father of her children - in 2012. It was also where her mother, Paula Yates, married Geldof in 1986, and the scene of her funeral 14 years ago after her death from an accidental heroin overdose when Peaches was just 11. The Duchess of York, journalist Mariella Frostrup, actress

Jaime Winstone, TV presenter Alexa Chung, and Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw were also there, among other celebrities. Peaches’ coffin was painted sky-blue, with a painting of her family on the back and peaches and clouds on the side.

Her ashes are expected to be scattered in the garden of Sir Bob’s Davington Priory estate, next to the church. Her body was found at her Kent home in Wrotham, which she shared with her husband and their sons, Astala, who was two on

Good Friday, and Phaedra, who was a year old yesterday (Thursday). Police had been alerted “following a report of concern for the welfare of a woman”. Grief-stricken Sir Bob paid tribute to his daughter alongside his partner Jeanne Marine, and Peaches’ sisters Fifi

Trixibelle, Pixie and Tiger, saying she was the “wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us”. Her older sister, Fifi, posted a picture of the siblings together on Instagram and wrote: “My beautiful baby sister … Gone but never forgot-

ten. I love you, Peaches x.” An inquest is not expected to be opened and adjourned by the coroner until after the results of toxicology tests are known. The last tweet posted by Peaches on the day before she died was a picture of herself as a child with her mother, with the message “me and my mum”. She often spoke about her struggle to cope with the break-up of her parents when she was seven, and admitted to experimenting with drugs during her teenage years. Just before 1pm, the hearse carrying Peaches’ body was driven into grade II-listed Davington Priory, where a private, medieval interior entrance connects directly to the church. The Order of Service featured a beautiful photograph of Peaches on her wedding day. Villagers lined the road to pay their respects and one said: “It’s an absolute tragedy and we still can’t believe it. The whole family must be going through hell.”

Take expert advice when buying an overseas home

By Jana Korpova

THE arrival of spring kick-starts activity in the housing market every year, especially in popular holiday-home destinations such as Spain.

If you’re keen to bag yourself a second home in Tenerife, or another sunny location, now is the time to start thinking about booking that all-important viewing trip. Before you start, though, think about exactly where you want to live and have a browse through the top-10 considerations to address when purchasing property abroad: 1. Air access: When researching your preferred destinations or area, check flight options and seasonality of routes. Relying on one budget airline and having just one choice of airport to get you to your property is not advisable. 2. Tax office registration: To purchase property anywhere, you’ll need to register with the local tax office and receive a tax identification number, which is required for the completion of any formal state process or transaction, including opening a bank account. In Spain this is known as your NIE number and is issued by the General Directorate of Police. It must be used on all tax returns and communications addressed to the tax authorities. You CANNOT buy property in Spain without an NIE. 3. Independent legal representation: A notary is required by Spanish law to oversee and rubber-stamp a property transaction. Notaries represent the State, and you will pay a small fee for their services. Don’t confuse them with lawyers. You will also need to employ an independent, Englishspeaking lawyer to represent your own interests.

He or she will be able to guide you through the details of the transaction, so that you fully understand the contract and supporting documentation. 4. Transferring your money abroad: At many stages in the purchasing process, and particularly when you are buying the property itself, you will probably need to send money from your sterling bank account in the UK to a Spanish euro account. Never ask your high street bank to do this! You’ll get a far better exchange rate, as well as a speedier and superior service, from an FCA-authorised currency specialist like Smart Currency Exchange. The company consistently offers exchange rates 2-4% better than those available from a high street bank. When you apply this saving to the typical value of a Spanish property purchase, you could easily save thousands of pounds. In real terms, it means exchanging and sending 150,000 euros from the UK to Spain should cost around £3,000 less when using a currency specialist. The other clever thing currency specialists do is enable clients to secure an exchange rate for a future transfer. It’s a worthwhile facil-

ity after having an offer accepted on a Spanish property because it will stop the sterling price changing with the exchange rate before completion day. For example when you’re ready to send money to Spain, you simply call your account manager at Smart Currency Exchange and agree a competitive exchange rate. The sterling you transfer is sent to its segregated client account, and then on to the overseas beneficiary account details you have provided. And that takes no more than 48 hours, rather than the 4-5 working days taken by the bank. 5. Your estate agent: A good English-speaking estate agent can be gold-dust, and will assist with much more than just showing you properties. It’s often said that once you know where you want to buy, the best place to start is by finding the right estate agent, rather than the right property. 6. Buying costs and taxes: The costs involved in purchasing a property in Spain will vary, depending on whether you are buying a resale property or a new-build (so, from a developer and never previously occupied), in addition to the pur-

chase price. When you budget for your property, be sure to factor in these inevitable costs. As a general rule, you should allow 10-12% on top of the purchase price to cover all taxes and fees. When buying a resale property, most of your costs will go towards transfer tax (ITP), which varies by region but is generally around 7%. You will also need to pay notary fees (fixed on a sliding scale), Land Registry fees and your independent lawyer’s fees. If you are buying with a mortgage, you will also have to pay for a valuation, stamp duty of 1.5% and a lender’s commission (usually 1% of the capital loan). If buying a new-build property, which means it comes with a Licence of First Occupation, no transfer tax is payable, but VAT (IVA) is levied at 10% of purchase price. Stamp duty is also applicable with a new-build. 7. On-going costs and taxes: Wherever you purchase a property, there will be additional, on-going ownership costs, which could include local council taxes, community fees (if on an urbanisation or complex), usual bills and maintenance - and possibly a small fee for

filing a tax return, if applicable. Again, for the best exchange rates to pay for these, an authorised currency specialist is essential if sending money from the UK. 8. Mortgage or outright purchase: It might be worth your while opting for a loan in Europe. Spanish banks desperate to off-load repossessed homes are currently offering some great finance deals, including some with guaranteed rental income. 9. Inheritance: Speak to your lawyer about inheritance before purchasing your property. He/she might be able to structure ownership in a way that reduces inheritance tax exposure, or ensures your property is passed on specifically according to your wishes. Remember, laws are different in Spain than they are in the UK. You may need to make a local will in the country of your second home. 10. Moving in: Once you have purchased your property, the next thing to consider is moving your life over to Spain - for good! A reputable removals company is high on the order of importance, and it’s vital to go with one which is insured and, ideally, a member of the British Association of Removers Over-

seas or the Association of International Removers. You will need to check out its insurance status, and what its policies cover. The best time to contact a removals company is three to six months before the removal date. Staff will need to visit your home to survey your possessions and give you a quote. A reputable company will always pack your goods professionally, and ensure you are able to comply with all regulations when moving them to Spain. It will provide you with a specific list of what you can and cannot take into the country, in addition to those appliances you will be able to continue using. If you are not moving straight into your home, some removals companies may also provide storage for your items. Jana Korpova is Head of Business Development at Smart Currency Exchange, a leading FCA-authorised currency transfer firm which specialises in helping overseas home-owners and expats send money between their UK and foreign currency accounts, offering better exchange rates than banks and a secure, fast service. www.smartcurrencyexchange.com, +(44) 207 898 0541

Norfolk is famous for being the driest county in England and it is also home to the UK’s largest protected Wetlands, the Norfolk Broads, which are made up of over 125 miles of waterways. Warwick hires a 35ft long boat and after kitting the family out in life jackets and sailor hats, they climb aboard and set sail from Potter Heigham. However driving the boat is not as easy as it looks and it takes a few attempts for Warwick to get the boat out of the dock. He says: “Ok so that wasn’t the smoothest of starts but now we are cruising there’s plenty of time to ease ourselves into the languid pace of life on the Norfolk Broads.” Surrounded by lush scenery and wildlife, the Davis family soon start to enjoy themselves. Warwick even climbs aboard an ice-cream boat doing the rounds and helps its owner sell treats to the other punters on the broads. Next the family visit Hunstanton, a resort built in the 1800s as a destination for leisure-seeking Victorians. Here they visit the local beach and Hunstanton Lifeboat Station (owned by the RNLI) which was founded in 1867. Warwick is invited to take part in an RNLI training exercise and after being squeezed into a dry suit he is taken out to sea on one of the hovercrafts. Warwick says: “This is a real privilege getting to join the lads for a full on life saving drill. Eat your heart out Hasslehoff!”

The cookery competition continues its tenth series with the last of the quarterfinals, and the four talented heat winners have no time to rest on their laurels as they fight for their place in the competition. First, they must prove their mettle in the fiendishly difficult palate and skills test. Chef John Torode cooks singapore chilli crab, a dish with a pungent fiery chilli and black bean paste that requires the cook to prepare and cook a whole crab. Without seeing him prepare it, the amateurs are given just a few minutes to taste this dish before being asked to recreate it without a recipe, selecting from ingredients that may or may not belong in the dish. For their second challenge, the four must go head-to-head to cook their own show-stopping dish for John and Gregg, plus renowned and sharp-tongued food critic Kate Spicer, who tells them exactly what she thinks of their food. At the end of this quarter-final, only the best amateurs will go through to the next round.

Generation War BBC2, 21.30 Berlin, the summer of 1941. Five friends, Wilhelm (Volker Bruch), his sensitive, artistic brother Friedhelm (Tom Schilling), Charlotte (Miriam Stein), Viktor (Ludwig Trepte) and Greta (Katharina Schüttler) meet to say farewell to each other. Wilhelm and Friedhelm have been ordered to serve at the eastern front. Charlotte is posted there as a nurse. They promise each other to meet again after the war, which they are convinced will be as soon as Christmas. After great preliminary military victories, the German Wehrmacht is advancing towards Moscow. The longer the war in the east, the more warexperienced lieutenant Wilhelm and his brother Friedhelm experience the terrors of the Russian campaign. When the two witness a pogrom in a Ukrainian farming village, where a German officer of the Sicherheitsdienst shoots a 14-year-old girl, despite Wilhelm’s intervention, their former view of the war is shaken. In the field hospital, Charlotte meets with the disillusioning reality of the war. However, when she discovers a Jewish doctor among the nurses, her firm National Socialist mindset faces a severe test. Meanwhile, Greta in Berlin is working at her career as a singer and begins an affair with Sturmbannfuehrer Dorn of the SS, a liaison she conceals from her Jewish boyfriend, Viktor.

20:30 ..... Mozart in Prague: Rolando Villazon on Don Giovanni Documentary exploring the premiere of Mozart’s opera, Don Giovanni, presented by acclaimed tenor Rolando Villazón. Don Giovanni had its premiere performance in Prague on October 29, 1787. Mozart’s vastly successful opera, based on the stories of legendary libertine Don Juan, delighted the city that had taken him to their hearts. But what brought them all, composer and audience, theatre manager and cast, to this time and place? Based in Prague, Rolando explores the run-up to that candle-lit first performance, looking at the music of the opera and the social setting in which it was first performed, before recreating the finale of the opera as close to how it would have looked and sounded on that autumn evening.

Vera ITV1, 20.00

Adapted by Paul Rutman from the novel ‘Harbour Street’ written by Ann Cleeves Directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan D.C.I. Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) investigates the mysterious death of pensioner Margaret Kraszewski (Annabel Leventon) found stabbed on a busy Newcastle train at the height of rush hour. With his daughter a key witness in the investigation, D.S. Joe Ashworth (David Leon) has a personal stake in finding Margaret’s killer. The trail leads them to a run down seaside B&B, where Margaret lived with Kate Darrow (Eva Birthistle) and her teenage children, Ryan (William Rush) and Chloe (Oliver Jack). Kate can’t believe anyone would want to hurt the mild mannered pensioner but Vera believes Margaret knew her killer. Enquiries lead them to Dee Sinton (Tilly Vosburgh), an alcoholic and old friend recently thrown out of the shelter where Margaret volunteered. When Dee is found dead, Vera knows the key to this new killing will be found in Margaret’s past. Pub landlord Valerie Furlow (Lynn Farleigh) remembers Dee and Margaret living in the same house and suggests her Polish ex-husband was violent. But he hasn’t been seen in thirty years. Local fisherman Malcolm Kenrich (Paul Copley) denies a close friendship with Margaret, but why has he been left responsible for her will?

Jo Frost Family Matters ITV1, 14.00

11:30 ..................... First Time on the Front Line 12:00 ....................Bargain Hunt

Jo Frost hosts an inspiring new talk show for ITV Daytime. The world renowned parenting expert is back on homeground, doing what she does best and helping British families in crisis. Along the way, Jo will meet a range of families, from absent parents whose grown-up children have disowned them, to tear-away teens turning their homes into war zones; recently formed step families struggling to accept their new living arrangements and families torn apart by extramarital affairs. Jo is on hand to explore the conflict and emotion of families across the nation, and offer real, workable solutions. Each programme will see Jo meet two families with different problems. By going into the contributor’s home, Jo will capture first hand the challenges that are tearing the family unit apart. Using her knowledge and expertise, Jo will be on hand to talk through these issues and cradle the family’s vulnerabilities before inviting the family into the studio to find resolution in her genuine no-nonsense Jo Frost style. Episode one First family: Jo meets mum Kerry who says that her marriage to Chris is at breaking point because the couples’ three-year-old son Kyle is out of control. Kerry says she feels guilty for wanting to be a modern day woman with a career and is sick of feeling like a bad mum because she wants to work full-time. The couple are joined for support by Kerry’s sister, Carly. Second family: Vanessa and Paul contacted the show because of the behaviour of their five-year-old twins, Harvey and Jake. Both feel they’d rather be at work than with the kids as they’re behaviour goes from bad to worse. Grandmother Linda says the children are spoilt. Jo joins the family to speak through their problems.

Ejector Seat

20:00 ................ EastEnders

ITV1, 16.00 Presented by Andi Peters, Ejector Seat is a fast-paced, funny and tense general knowledge quiz that will see contestants literally ‘ejected’ from their seats. The show sees six contestants take their place in one of six imposing Ejector Seats, each at the top of a track that leads back toward ‘the edge’. The game is simple. If contestants can answer general knowledge questions correctly they stay sitting happily in their seat, but answer incorrectly and their seat travels backwards along the track. The contestant is now under pressure and, as they move backwards, even the simplest questions suddenly feels incredibly tough. If the contestant reaches the edge before they can answer another question correctly, they’re ejected - tipped backwards out of their seat in spectacular fashion and are out of the game for good. Round by round, contestants are ejected until only one is left sitting. That contestant then plays the final round with the chance to win up to £10,000.

The Birth of Empire: The East India Company BBC2, 21:00 Dan Snow travels through India in the footsteps of the company that revolutionised the British lifestyle and laid the foundations of today’s global trading systems. 400 years ago British merchants landed on the coast of India and founded a trading post to export goods to London. Over the next 200 years, their tiny business grew into a commercial titan. Using the letters and diaries of the men and women who were there, this documentary tells the story of The East India Company, which revolutionised the British lifestyle, sparked a new age of speculation and profit and by accident created one of the most powerful empires in history. Yet inexorable rise ended in ignominy. Accused of greed, corruption and corporate excess, by the 1770’s the Company’s reputation was ruined. Blamed for turning its back as millions died in the Bengal famine, and thrown into crisis by a credit crunch in Britain, the world’s most powerful company had run out of cash, sparking a government intervention.

How to Get a Council House Channel 4, 21:00

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is facing a housing crisis. There are 20,000 households on the waiting list for a council home, and with just 48 properties becoming available each week, competition is high. It’s the job of the council’s housing office to determine who deserves the few vacancies that appear. As families struggle to find social housing, many are forced to spend weeks living in small bed and breakfasts with shared bathrooms; others are spending up to a decade in ‘temporary’ accommodation and facing eviction when they decline to move into permanent properties that they don’t find suitable for their needs. This doesn’t include the countless other individuals who are failing to get any kind of council accommodation, and are at the mercy of private landlords. As each household tells their story, they explain why they think they deserve the highly sought-after keys to a council house.

In this new series, Heston Blumenthal delves into the history of some of our favourites - from curry to pies to afternoon tea and chocolate - in order to find inspiration for an amazing culinary salute. The first episode is all about the great British pie, with Heston on a mission to find inspiration for a three-course pie banquet. For his starter, he delves into the history of the ‘surprise’ pies of the 17th century, where some ingredients were sometimes - bizarrely alive. Entertainment

25th April 2014 - 1st May 2014

Midnight Riders already riding high for St George E N T E R TA I N ERS on our circuit over here are always happy to give up their time for worthy causes.

Many support various charity events regularly, whether it is for funds to aid the fight against cancer, or to raise cash for the needy, our artistes have always gone above and beyond the call of duty. At Linekers Bar on Wednesday, St George’s Day, five acts performed on the sun-drenched terrace of this world famous bar. All the artistes featured have previously been reviewed on this page. So today, I’m looking at the new musical collaboration which began the afternoon entertainment. The Midnight Riders emerged on the scene some two months ago and comprise two guys who have been in and around the business for a long time. Musician Ollie “Showbiz” Cusack has worked with various musical collaborations - including the award-winning Phenomenon, who picked up the Best IT gives me great pleasure to welcome The First & Last and Ye Olde Ocean as fortnightly sponsors of this page. These bars have been taken over in the last year and the new owners, who have operated larger bars in Tenerife for many years, have made only slight changes at both venues. The bars are run in a similar way, but the entertainment programmes vary widely.

has also put together a boy/girl duo with female vocalist Suzie Moore. They have called themselves Rhythm & Sooz and are gigging on the circuit. But it doesn’t stop there for Ollie because his father, John, has worked on the Island for many years and, together on stage, they form Special Brew, offering a mix of rock, pop, blues, Irish and country music. These factors and the various musical ventures with which Ollie is involved are probably responsible for that “Showbiz.” nickname. Wednesday was the first time I had seen

Newcomer Award at last year’s TEAs. His partner in rhyme is also no stranger to winning awards. Stephen Tyler, who received the award for Best Male Vocalist at the same show, joined the collection of entertainers working here in Tenerife 18 months ago. And Stephen has enjoyed great success

while working as a solo artiste, and with different bands. He and Ollie now combine their talents as The Midnight Riders, as well as continuing their other working projects. It seems to be the way many of the more versatile artistes are heading. Ollie still works alongside Luke Carey in the duo Phenomenon, and

For example, both comperes work closely to ensure that no two similar acts are performing on the same night. The bars are only 50 metres away from one another, so this factor really is important. The summer programme is being tweaked in both bars in readiness for the summer. They are both large, roomy bars with plenty of offers and drink deals at the bar. The First & Last of-

fers a packed entertainment programme and is all held together by resident compere Vinnie Love. He begins the night with a comedic quiz with differing formats each night, but by far the most popular is Vinnie’s Family Fortunes quiz, which creates a lot of laughter and sets the night up perfectly. Alternatively, if you don’t fancy a quiz, try Ye Olde Ocean, where I have taken up resi-

dence and start at 9 o’clock every night. Both Bars offer the almost-obligatory karaoke, and both have the cream of the crop when it comes to cabaret. Showtime is at 11pm every night with live bands, comedy, tribute artistes and vocal acrobatics from some of the finest vocalists on the Island. You will exceed your expectations from just one visit to either of these Fañabe fun pubs.

The Midnight Riders performing, and it soon became obvious to me and others that they will gain swift recognition on the circuit. Stephen, who sings lead vocals in the duo, has a powerful rock voice and looks every bit the rock star. He has the long hair, chiselled looks and a stage presence that cannot be taught. It is a gift for him to have this talent - and to put it together with Ollie, who provides some incredible lead breaks via his Fender Strat. The boys compiled a playlist for St George’s Day which was appropriate for celebrat-

ing the patron saint of England. Their song choices were taken from artistes like Oasis, The Beatles and Kaiser Chiefs, among many more English bands and artistes. They also included most music covered by the rock genre and will, no doubt, become a prominent force to be reckoned with. And I have to say that of all the new acts to emerge so far this year, these guys are my favourites. I have always admired and respected those who just get out there and walk the walk, instead of just standing at a bar talking the talk!

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Yoikes! Shaggy’s in the final The 19th century writer W.E. Hickson put it best: “Tis a lesson you should heed. Try, try, try again. If at first you don’t succeed, Try, try, try again.”

This summed up the effort from Gary Thompson, aka Shaggy, as he finally made it through to the final of Tenerife Loves Karaoke. He has been close on a number of occasions this year, and he has more runner-up trophies than the organiser! But Shaggy finally came good in a quality heat at Palms Sports Bar in Torviscas - a loud, lively affair, performed in front of a large, boisterous crowd - and it took some winning. There were 16 singers and little to choose between them. Roscoe was the evening’s compere and Anita had the honour of opening the event, doing a fine job with the Eurythmics’ classic Sweet Dreams. The singers came thick and fast. Louise’s Katy Perry Firework, Joanne’s Hey Big Spender and Roberto’s version of Dakota all grabbed the attention. As did Cliff Pearlman! It was easy to spot him as he was on crutches after breaking an ankle. But that didn’t stop him doing an inspired version of the Prodigy’s Firestarter, complete with flying crutches!

He was a fans’ favourite, along with Bobby Baker after his Puff The Magic Dragon. Fritzel did a fine job of I’d Never Find Another You and Dodds’ version of Mustang Sally was top drawer. Ditto Kelly’s If I Could Turn Back Time. There is no doubt it was a tough heat to score and judges Luke, Colette, Barry and Shai had their work cut out. Shaggy performed his signature Let Her Go and there were strong efforts from Ken, Becky and Graham. Vicky made a late singoff charge with Stupid

Cupid and Daniel enjoyed doing the Boot Skootin Boogie. And then there was Diamond Dave. He went up to the stage with a swagger and stormed the stage with Ain’t That A Kick In The Head. And it caught the judges’ eye. Or ear. He made it through to the last-three sing-off with Shaggy and Kelly. Dave was first up and loved doing That’s Life before Kelly’s stunning version of Black Velvet. Sing-off veteran Shaggy was a little nervous as he performed Tears In Heaven. But got the job

done. Diamond Dave scooped third place, saying: “That’s the first thing I’ve ever won. I couldn’t even win an ugly baby prize!” And he was genuinely chuffed. After a careful recount, and double-checking the scores, there was just 0.25 points between the top two. It was heartbreak for Kelly, who will surely try again, while Shaggy is in the final - and a stride closer to winning that 1,000-euro first prize. Tonight, the TLK bandwagon rolls into Mikey’s Bar in Los Cristianos. A fit-again Jamie Droo hosts.

Garden

25th April 2014 - 1st May 2014

A sizzler for By Margaret Tully TROPAEOLUM, known commonly as Garden Nasturtium, are one of the easiest plants to grow and give a real splash of colour throughout the summer.

They are called Nasturtium because they have peppery-tasting leaves and are similar to Nasturtium officinale, which is, in fact, Watercress! Although the Tropaeoalum are the only family in this genus, there are said to be over one million Tropaeolaceue of different colours, and shapes, both in the leaves and the flowers - and no, I haven’t seen every one. Yet! But I have grown Tropaeolum majus, which is the most common one; it trails and has almost circular leaves and bright orange-and-

summer!

yellow flowers. I have continued to grow them in my garden here and they do really well, too. Tropaeolum peregrinum (Canary bird flower, canary nasturtium) has nothing to do with the Canary Islands. It has the common name because its flower is exactly the yellow of the bird. The flower even has frills on it like feathers, and it is truly beautiful to look at. Tropaeolum speciosum (Flame nasturtium) is apparently difficult to grow as it needs a cool soil and prefers to grow in acidic earth. It grows well in the Highlands of Scotland, and it also likes its head to be in the sun or partial shade. So there must be sun in Scotland after all! Heather is a typical Scottish, acid-loving plant but this Tropaeolum appears to have been given the title of Glory of the Highlands. Finally, Tropaeolum tuberosum, as the name suggests, has edible tu-

bers, which are eaten in Peru. Word of warning, though: they have a direct effect on the reduction of testosterone. The Garden Nasturtium, or Tropaeolum majus to be technically correct, is edible. The leaves are excellent in salads, or lightly fried. In addition, the flowers and the seeds are both edible. If you plant Tropaeolum majus seeds in poor soil, you will get more flowers than leaves, and the opposite happens if sown in rich soil. But if you tend to like both, as I do, then start out with a fairly rich soil and eat lots of leaves when they are ready. Then, as the plant grows, it soon starts to flower - and I scoff the flowers as well. Soon, though, there are too many to tuck into, and the seeds develop - so I eat them before they harden and dry out. Once the plant has gone over and if there

are any dry seeds left, I pick them and store them for sowing next season. I then remove the plants and put them on the compost. So, from this humble but very beautiful plant, you get your pound of flesh. When sowing Tropaeolum seeds, soak them in water overnight because this helps to awaken the seed from its dormant state. They make a great companion to other plants, especially those from the brassica family. They deter non-beneficial insects but encourage bees, who are looking for the rich nectar they have to offer. I can vouch for this as the leaves on my broccoli and cauliflowers have not been eaten and they grow next to the Tropaeolums. They are such happy, smiley plants and useful, so if you have never grown them before, give them a try - a packet of seeds could fill a patio full of summer colour.

BLACKFLY BARRIER

THE Milk Thistle I have growing in my “Green Box” are host to hundreds of blackfly, or black aphids, and it’s fine by me. Honestly, it really is because it means they don’t need to go anywhere else for food. Ants love blackfly soot, and giving the ants something to eat may keep them out of the house. It is all about creating a

chain - a natural cycle. Chemicals tend to sort one problem but, by breaking the natural cycle, something else happens further down the line. The blackfly gets its name from the sootlike mould which forms on infested leaves. So, no chemical sprays are required - just a few sacrificial lambs, and the balance is achieved.

Mystery edible of the week...

Pera Melon (Solanum muricatum) THIS yellow fruit has purple stripes and can be found at your local farmers’ market. It is member of the Solanum genus, just like aubergines, so it belongs to the nightshades (tomato, potato, etc). To eat, remove skin and eat the flesh. There are a couple of small seeds inside, but they are easily removed. It tastes just like a cross between a pear and a melon, so the

name suit perfectly. Please let me know of any mystery edibles you come across, or have done so already. Hopefully, we can build another fascinating little series for the page. Email me at margaretktully@aol. com

By Val Sainsbury BULLIED children can still experience negative effects on their physical and mental health more than 40 years later.

A study by King’s College London researchers tracked 7,771 children born in 1958, from the age of seven until 50. Those bullied frequently as children were at an increased risk of depression and anxiety, and they were more likely to report a lower quality of life at 50. Anti-bullying groups said people needed longterm support after being pushed around. A previous study, from Warwick University, tracked more than 1,400 people, aged of nine to 26, and found that bullying had long-term negative consequences for health, job prospects and relationships.

25th April 2014 - 1st May 2014

The bullied schoolkids who just cannot forget This study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, suggests that the impact of bullying could last well into middle-age. True, the risk of poor health, and social and economic consequences 40 years after exposure to bullying was small about 1.5 times the norm - the study said it was similar to that faced by children in care. To collect their data, researchers asked parents if their child had been exposed to bullying from the 7-11 age group. More than 25% said they had been bullied occasionally, while 15% were bullied frequently. Over the years, researchers then carried out tests to see if the known effects of bullying persisted into adulthood. Individuals were tested for psychological distress and general health at the ages of 23 and 50, for psychiatric problems at 45 and cognitive functioning, social relationships and well-being at 50. The

study found that those bullied in childhood were more likely to have poorer physical and mental health, and cognitive functioning at 50. Those who were bullied frequently were more likely to be depressed and have suicidal thoughts. There were also social and economic consequences to childhood bullying. Those bullied as children were more likely to be less educated, with

men who were bullied more likely to be unemployed and earn less. Social relationships were also affected, with bullied individuals less likely to be in a relationship and to have good support from friends and family at 50. Prof Louise Arseneault, senior study author from the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London, said: “We need to move away from any perception that bullying

is just an inevitable part of growing up. “Teachers, parents and policy-makers should be aware that what happens in the school playground can have longterm repercussions for children. “Programmes to stop bullying are extremely important, but we also need to focus our efforts on early intervention to prevent potential problems persisting into adolescence and adulthood.” The study said the harmful effect of bullying remained, even when other factors including childhood IQ, emotional and behavioural problems and parents’ socioeconomic status were taken into account. Prof Arseneault added: “Forty years is a long time, so there will no doubt be additional experiences during the course of these young people’s lives which may either protect them against the effects of bullying, or make things worse. Our next step is

to investigate what these are.” Lucie Russell, director of campaigns and media at Young Minds, said the research highlighted that the effects of bullying are not just temporary. “Bullying is traumatic and painful for every young person who experiences it, and its longterm impact can lead to psychological damage for many years to come - as this important study has shown. “Responding to bullying must, therefore, take on board this impact with long-term, followup support to minimise the pain and suffering many victims experience throughout their lives.” Martha Evans, from the Anti-Bullying Alliance said: “Parents/carers, teachers and children, and young people, all have a part to play in working together to create a society where bullying is not tolerated, and where we all respond to bullying quickly and appropriately.”

Obesity ‘disease’ hard to swallow OBESE people tend to eat even more when told they have a disease - because they believe there is no “cure”.

The “disease” label also encourages unhealthy behaviour among people who are severely overweight, a new study reveals. Researchers at the University of Richmond and the University of Minnesota believe this

could be because labelling obesity as a disease makes people think it is unchangeable, and that attempts at weight loss are likely to be fruitless. They also place less importance on dieting and are less concerned

about their weight. As a result, they also tend to eat more unhealthily. The American Medical Association defined obesity as a disease in June 2013, and psychologists Crystal Hoyt and Jeni Burnette wanted to establish what effect this has had. “Considering obesity is a crucial public health issue, a better understanding of the impact of an “obesity is a disease” message has significant implications for patientlevel and policy-level outcomes,’ said Dr Hoyt. “Experts have been debating the merits of, and problems with, the AMA policy, and we wanted to contribute to the conversation by bringing data rather than speculation - and by focusing on the psychological repercussions.” Dr Hoyt and her col-

leagues recruited more than 700 participants to take part in an online survey across three different studies. The participants read an article related to health and weight, and then answered various questions. Importantly, some participants read an article that described obesity as a disease, some read a standard public health message about weight, and others read an article specifically stating that obesity is not a disease. Height and weight data were used to calculate the participants’ bodymass index and to classify participants as “average weight” or “obese”, in line with World Health Organisation guidelines. The results showed that the particular message read by obese par-

ticipants had a clear impact on their attitudes toward health, diet, and weight. Specifically, obese participants who read the “obesity is a disease” article placed less importance on dieting and reported less concern about weight, relative to obese participants who read the other two articles. They also chose higher-calorie options when asked to pick a sandwich from a menu. Interestingly, these participants reported greater body satisfaction, which, in turn, also predicted higher-calorie food choices. “Together, these findings suggest that the messages individuals hear about the nature of obesity have self-regulatory consequences,” said Dr Hoyt.

By Carl from Robot

WHEN choosing the perfect colour tone for your hair, stylists tend to look at more than just the colour you want.

We look beyond what you think may suit you because we want to ensure that colour isn’t going to clash with certain things about you and that it will complement everything about you. For instance, we look at the tone of your skin: is the colour going to clash, or enhance this? If you are pale and shy away from the sun, we aren’t going to send you too dark or too ashen because this won’t do anything for you complexion. If your skin tends to have freckles, anything

Colour perfect too dark or too orangey will most certainly not do you any favours. The same applies if your skin has a more Mediterranean look. That’s because any shade which is too brassy or too light will look totally false on this shade. Your colour needs to enhance your face, as well as other areas. For instance, does the colour you are asking for go with your wardrobe? Does it tone with your make-up? These things need to be considered when choosing the right shade for you. If you tend to go for more natural colours in your wardrobe, we would normally shy away from using anything too bright, colour-wise. And the same applies if your clothing tends

to be more striking because your colour should follow suit. When your hair starts to become more than 30% white, you should by rights start to lighten your shade. There’s nothing worse than trying to hold on to your colour because when you lose it, you also lose it in your skin. Keeping it too dark can make you look drawn and washed out. It’s much softer to lighten up, but this doesn’t mean blonde it can be just adding a few highlights to soften the look. And if you are naturally blonder, don’t steer too far away from your natural shade as this will not look good against your eye colour, or even your eyebrows. There are so many things to take into account when choosing your shade, which is why you should use the skills of your stylist to help you select the right one for you. Stylists should not only be looking at what you’re asking for, but also at what else is going on about you: clothing, make-up, personality, and so on. Choosing the right shade isn’t about just picking one out of a book. It’s about bringing all of the factors together to give you the shade that not only works for you but complements and enhances everything about you. It’s the complete package!

BODYSURFING SELFIE A MUST By Ruth Benson HIGH STREET group French Collection last week launched #canthelpmyselfie in its Regent Street store.

The increase of people taking and sharing selfies has increased in recent months, and the group is cashing in on the idea. In the London store, as well as five others, including Oxford Street, Bluewater, Manchester and Newcastle, the concept will be tried out. There will be a photo booth in the stores, where people can take selfies. The concept consists of people going into the booth and choosing their favourite selfie, which will then be projected on to large screens outside, to be seen by passers-by. After the event, the photographs will be posted on the brand’s social media pages to give people an opportunity to win the best and most fashionable selfie. So with this in mind, I am giving you ideas on how to take the best selfie. One of the most popular with celebrities is that of the “Bodysurfing”, made famous by Heidi Klum. This is the best way to show off your bikini body, the photo being taken from the neck down. Another one for the bikini body-shot is “the side body surf”, which

takes in one side of your body and gives a great angle of those pins. Ideally, you should be on a sun-lounger, pool in the background and cocktail in hand. It’s not only the image that’s important because the light is key, sunsets and sunrises being the most flattering. Your surroundings are also key, not only to making you look good but to making a fantastic photograph. The filter is a godsend on photos; you could be as white as a sheet but, with the magic of the filter, you could be a bronze goddess. Wearing sunglasses is a must, because, according to Glamour magazine, 98% of people look better wearing them!.

Last but not least, we have “pout and whip”. This involves perking up your lips and flicking back your hair. While these are original ideas - and I’m sure most people know their preferred side, or most favourable angle - I believe the selfie has become an icon in itself. With this in mind, the most vital selfies circulating Facebook came from the #nomakeupselfie, which saw ladies posting themselves without make-up for Cancer UK. This kind of selfie not only showed goodwill from all the ladies, but raised millions and, most importantly, awareness. And that’s something to smile about!

Gem of a restaurant …and gem of a feast SITUATED on the mountain-facing side of the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos, you could be forgiven for not finding Kikiriki, or not even knowing it has been there since 1998. Kikiriki, owned and run by Cordobeses (from Córdoba in Andalucía)

Antonio García Mora and his wife Carmen Baños González, it is a gem of a restaurant. It offers typical Spanish and international cuisine at very reasonable prices: starters begin from just 1.25 euros for garlic bread. Antonio was in the pro-

cess of introducing his new menu when we visited, so we decided to combine some of the new items with their tried and trusted favourites. If you fancy a sociable starter, you can’t go wrong with the Pan Catalán; chunks of lightlytoasted, rustic bread,

rubbed with garlic and tomato, and topped with the best-quality Jamón Ibérico. The onion-and-salmon quiche was our other starter selection, and it didn’t disappoint. It was creamy and flavoursome, and not shy on the salmon. Kikiriki is known for its roast chicken. What Carmen puts in the seasoning is a closely-guarded secret, but, suffice to say, it’s delicious. The half roast chicken is priced at 5.70 euros and, honestly, it was the biggest half-chicken I have ever seen! It was accompanied by four sauces, all very different, and all complementing the meat perfectly. If you’re not feeling adventurous, then try the pepper sauce, which has just the right balance of creaminess and heat. There is a Roquefort sauce for lovers of blue cheese, but the two stars in my mind were the spicy tomato sauce (be warned; it has a kick), and their special Kikiriki sauce, featuring cream, tomato and tarragon, with French origins. Antonio and Carmen have included loin of cod to the new menu, which is what we chose as our second main course. The cod can be prepared in several ways; battered, simply grilled, with garlic or with onions. We received a large piece of light flaky cod loin which was served with garlic. The garlic was subtle

enough to taste without overpowering the wonderful fish, but if you fancy it stronger, then do ask. Our side-dishes again showed a selection of what is on offer at Kikiriki. We opted for garlic potatoes (I see a theme developing here) and chips. But I had already been told about their Creamed Spinach Gratinée, so we had to try that, too. It was the perfect accompaniment. Once we thought we had finished our feast, waitress Ellie from Ecuador appeared with not one but two desserts. We really had to force them down (*ahem!*) but both the lemon meringue pie and the hot almond cake just smelled so good, we couldn’t ignore them. The lemon sorbet accompanying the desserts was a great palate cleanser; delightfully fresh and zingy without making your face crumple. We asked Antonio a few questions about Kikiriki and here’s how that went: CW: How long have you

been in the restaurant business? Kikiriki: I was a waiter from being a young man, but wanted my own place. Carmen and I moved from Cordoba 22 years ago, and finally opened Kikiriki seven years later. CW: Where does your meat come from? Kikiriki: It’s all fresh from the mainland; none of our meat has come from South America, unlike some places, and is the freshest available. CW: What (other than chicken) are your specialities? Kikiriki: We do a suckling pig, as well as fresh roast lamb. But you have to order that in advance because of the cooking time to get it just perfect. CW: Where does the name Kikiriki come from? Kikiriki: It’s the noise a chicken makes in the morning (Antonio then proceeded to make the clucking noise “kikirikirikiriki” which, I guess, would translate loosely to “cock-a-doodle-doo!”). A Senior View & Community News

By Monica Dyson I WAS disturbed to read that a church which has been a part of the community in my hometown for many years, is facing closure. And that the congregation most Sundays numbers around 43 people! The church was built in 1890, the heyday of religious attendances throughout Britain, and in memory of Samuel Fox, founder of a large Sheffield steelworks, when the city’s steel was famous worldwide. Like most built churches around that time, it is large, grand and was constructed to accommodate the large numbers of people who would fill it. When I was a child, church was the most important social event of the week. It was as important to see and be seen - and have a good gossip - as any other reasons for going. That was how it seemed when we were young, when our mother chatted to her friends in the churchyard, although we also saw our school friends there.

25th April 2014 - 1st May 2014

When Easter was a time of innocence…

It was amazing how much they actually had to say to each other, given the number of church attendances we Catholics attended in the Fifties, Easter particularly. The children living near us who were Protestant didn’t go to their church nearly as often. We attended Mass on Sundays, choosing between services at different times, and Holy Days of Obligation. And we knew that we would commit a Mortal Sin if we missed going, unless there was a good reason. It was instilled in us that anything we did wrong meant that we would, ultimately, be accountable to a higher power. There was a real sense of fear, but it was something we accepted without question. We didn’t know anything about other religions. We were taught that ours was the one true religion. However, all was not lost because we could always admit to our sins at confession! But by and large, we didn’t misbehave, and we actually had trouble thinking up some sins to confess! We knew that our par-

ents would take the teacher’s side if we were accused of any wrongdoing, and we were in awe of any one in a position of authority. We actually respected police, teachers and clergy, even though our trust was proved to have been misjudged in some cases, in the light of later events. Our whole lives seemed, in some way, to be linked to the church. We abstained from meat on Fridays, which was always good for the fishmongers at our local shops. Queues would snake round the pavement on Friday mornings, and we fasted for 24 hours before Sunday morning communion. Not easy when you were young and hungry! This was, generally, a time of innocent bliss, enjoyed by those growing up through them, not knowing anything of the dark underside of the adult world. They weren’t perfect times. People believed that smoking made you look “cool”, especially in America; that racial discrimination was justified, although the UK was immune from it at that time, with West Indians just starting to

appear in our cities after the War, when they had been recruited in their thousands to serve in our Armed Forces. The arrival of HMS Windrush in 1948 brought many to our shores, and bringing with them the rich, Caribbean culture which is part of our lives today. Few of the Caucasians of the day could have grasped how badly black people could be treated in a socalled Christian society in many parts of the world. However, we didn’t know much about other parts of the world - and the only people we knew who had ever left England were those who served in the Forces. We can’t go back to how things were in the Fifties and, in many ways, it is both a blessing and a loss. We have corrected many of the shortcomings of that era, although it can be said that we have taken backward steps in terms of innocence, safety and respect. Church attendances have been declining in the UK for some years. And us children, growing up in those days, were possibly the last

generation to attend church regularly. Interestingly enough, the decline in church congregations has been slowed down by the attendance of people from ethnic minorities. Christian Research, a religious think tank, has found that one-third of churches are growing, especially those with a predominantly black congregation. Church-going in England has been in decline since the Fifties, with an estimated one million people giving up attending regularly in the Nineties alone. However, the decline has slowed down as the country has become more ethnically diverse. And in the Catholic Church, things are starting to change with the arrival of workers from Eastern European countries like Poland. Although religion played a big part in our lives while we were growing up - and in our school curriculum things are very different today. The study of different religions seems to have taken the place of the traditional teachings we knew. A recent All Party Parliamentary group on Religious Education

wants the subject to be treated as a priority by trained, religious education teachers. In today’s world, children can be open to an enormous amount of misleading information about different cultures and religions, and they need to be able to make informed choices about diverse doctrines. Also, it seems that an increasing number of schools have ditched the traditional Christian assembly in favour of reflections on topics like “International Women’s Day”, “International Day Against Homophobia” and “Bullying”. There seems to be a feeling, especially in schools of racial diversity, that school assemblies can tackle ethical issues without religious context, with examples or issues from the everyday world used to make serious points about morality and society. For all that, though, religion is not without humour. A sign outside a church I passed recently read: “Happy Easter to our Christian friends, Happy Passover to our Jewish ones, and to our Atheist ones - Good Luck!”

Motoring

By Jav IT is said that the hallmark of being a successful carmaker is to remodel your bestselling car … and receive even more accolades than before.

And that’s exactly what Nissan have achieved with their supreme crossover Qashqai, which is a triumph indebted again to its home-grown expertise. It is built in Sunderland, designed in London and engineered mainly at Cranfield, in Bedfordshire. Nissan took a huge gamble on the initial Qashqai and this time, quite rightly, they are being rather more conservative by following their incredibly-successful formula. This updated Qashqai, built on a new RenaultNissan Alliance Common Module Family (CMF) platform, is 47mm longer than its predecessor, while being lower and a touch wider. This makes it look a bit more dynamic, with sharp lines and attractive detailing. And this pleasing appearance will do it no harm in a crossover sector positively thriving with alternatives. With prices starting from under £18,000 (around 21,900 euros), there should be former customers queuing around the block.

25th April 2014 - 1st May 2014

Just quackers over Qashqai

The Qashqai is offered with four trim levels, starting with the relatively well-equipped Visia model, rising through Acenta, Acenta Premium and rangetopping Tekna. There are two petrol engines (a 1.2-litre, 113bhp four at launch, then a 1.6-litre 148bhp four later this year) plus two diesels, the familiar 109bhp 1.5-litre Nissan shares with Renault, and a 128bhp 1.6-litre unit. All come with a sixspeed manual gearbox as standard, although the 1.6-litre diesel is also offered with the choice of a CVT or, alternatively, four-wheel drive in conjunction with the six-speed manual transmission. And the Qashqai engines are transversely mounted, driving the

front wheels or, in certain cases, all four. Last year’s Qashqai was a smash hit, reaching No.6 in the UK bestseller list, despite being at the end of a six-year life cycle. Several similarlyshaped rivals have followed the Nissan into the ever-expanding crossover sector, but none has come up to scratch. True, the Qashqai wasn’t the first crossover, but it was among the first to tap into the concept from a mainstream, family-size motor with affordable costs. In Britain, at least, it also replaced the Primera and Almera in 2007, showing the extent to which Nissan had gambled on this one model. And, almost seven years

on, the gamble now resembles a masterstroke. The stakes for its replacement are obviously high, but the omens are good. Like Volkswagen reworking their Golf or Ford fancying up the Focus, it seems on paper as though Nissan have left little to chance. Or indeed, carried out dramatic changes. Nissan announced their CMF architecture last June, informing the world that they would underpin 14 models across the Renault-Nissan Alliance in the near future - and be in even more widespread use by 2020. Rather than being a common platform, CMF is a group of modular areas such as the engine bay, cabin and separate front and rear body elements. This allows it to

be expanded to cater for a greater range of vehicles of differing sizes. If any one feature of this model testifies to the evolution of the crossover since 2007, it’s the interior. The previous model was a chunky plastic hutch, but the new cabin is far more upmarket, dumping the workaday dash for a sleeker, shinier design clearly influenced by recent rivals from Korea and Germany. The four trim levels are comparatively well equipped, with entrylevel models featuring heated electric mirrors, hill-start assist, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, a speed limiter, a trip computer and air-con. Besides offering more power, the new 113bhp

1.2-litre turbo-charged petrol offers up substantially more torque than the old 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated engine. It’s not fast - 11.3sec to 62mph. say Nissan - but it accelerates smoothly and with ease from a standstill. The 1.2-litre engine most impresses on the motorway. Noise levels are low and its 140lb ft peak torque output allows for painless overtaking without having to shift gears. The diesel engines are likely to be the prime movers for many, however. It takes a cold start on a frosty morning to elicit any hint of complaint from the 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, and the slight clatter doesn’t last long. Otherwise, this is a remarkably quiet, well mannered powerplant. The previous Qashqai’s biggest gift probably gave interested drivers hope. It showed that crossovers could handle, and this one strikes a similar note. It has become hugely important to Nissan, and they have come up trumps with their remodelling of a machine destined to become an all-time favourite. Rivals such as the Skoda Yeti and Mazda CX-5 have much to offer. But they fail to match the all-round competitiveness and appeal of this no-quibble quackerjack Qashqai!

Suzuki’s marathon petrol bid SUZUKI Motor have pledged to manufacture cars to run on fresh air … well, almost!

They intend to improve their existing technologies to enable cars to travel around 25 miles (40 kilometres) on one litre of petrol. The Japanese company are keen to strengthen their presence in

emerging economies, where demand for efficient cars is growing. They also aim to take on arch-rivals Daihatsu Motor, who have set a target of 42.195km per litre fuel economy, which is the length of a marathon. The 40kpl, petrol-driven car, is among several technologies, unveiled by Executive Vice-President Osamu Honda, which Suzuki plan to

use to launch low-cost, fuel-efficient vehicles in India and countries in south-east Asia. They are off to a good start because Suzuki’s Alto Eco minivehicle already produces 35kpl. Stricter, clean-air regulations are expected to be implemented from around 2020 in these emerging economies, and Suzuki want to be right at the forefront

even before the time comes. Honda, referring to the car-maker’s programme to develop a series of new vehicles - including a compact hybrid car - said: “We will adopt a simple, low-cost control system for Suzuki cars, Profit margins on compact cars are so thin that Suzuki cannot afford to adopt a complicated, high-cost control system used by big au-

to-makers such as Toyota Motor and Honda Motor. And that is why Suzuki are concentrating on employing their existing technologies. Suzuki’s Ene-Charge system sends power to electric components using the electricity generated when a vehicle brakes. The company plan to enhance this system, with stored electricity

to be used to support the driving mechanism when the car accelerates as well. Suzuki will also attempt to raise the efficiency of petrol engines by using lighter chassis than those already used They are also developing a two-cylinder, 800cc diesel engine for cars sold in India - and their Indian subsidiary has the biggest share of the auto market there.

Tenerife’s true grit

By Roscoe

CD Tenerife 3 Numancia 2 THIS season’s adventure is fast turning into, as fans of Blackpool use to sing, “The Best Trip We’ve Ever Been On!”

Make no mistake, CD Tenerife are on a promotion charge - and I’m not talking about the play-offs! Sunday’s hard-fought victory over a spirited Numancia showed Tenerife’s character as they fought back from being a goal down with 10 minutes to play. Nearest rivals Sporting, Recreativo, Real Murcia and Las Palmas all failed to win, so Tenerife knew how important this game was. With former CDT

players Natalio and Julio Alvarez in their lineup, the visitors were always going to be a handful. It was a spicy encounter with the fans booing every Natalio or Alvarez touch.

Position

Tenerife had a worrying start when Cristo Martin, who has been in fine form recently, suffered what looks like a season-ending injury. This forced manager Alvaro Cervera to tweak his formation

and, instead of going like-for-like, he brought on another forward. Juanjo, a former Numancia man, sat alongside Aridane just behind Ayoze Perez, and this system gave Tenerife a real edge. The home threat made Numancia sit back, and Tenerife had some good chances before they finally broke the deadline just after the half-hour. A sweeping break, and fine pass from Ayoze put Aridane in, and he did well to slot the ball past a well-positioned Ribas. A smart Roberto save right on half-time gave Tenerife the lead at the turn-around, before Numancia made a match of it. Ten minutes in, Sergi took advantage of some poor marking to slide the ball past Roberto. And when more slack defending gifted Juanma a free header from an Alvarez free-kick, Numancia were eyeing an upset. Ironically, the lead goal came 60 seconds after Cervera made a shrewd substitution. He sensed Tenerife

were lacking the killer ball and brought on the “quarter-back”. Quique Rivero hadn’t even touched the ball when Numancia scored, but his time would come. With the visitors sitting back, he was able to pick his passes and Tenerife went on the offensive. Two minutes later, they were level after a fine bit of skill from Juanjo. His gorgeous chest control and left-footed half-volley whizzed past Ribas to level. Seven minutes later another dangerous attack saw the ball sit beautifully for Rivero, who smashed the ball past the keeper to start the party at a noisy Heliodoro stadium. It was his first-ever goal for Tenerife, and regular readers will remember me writing about his potential as an impact sub a few weeks ago. Canarian Weekly ratings CD Tenerife: Roberto 7, Javi Moyano 7, Carlos Ruiz 6, Bruno 6, Ayoze Diaz 6, Suso 9, Ricardo 8, Aitor Sanz 6,

Cristo 5 (Juanjo 18min 7); Aridane 7 (Rivero 70min 8), Ayoze Perez 6 (Nano 86min). Numancia: Ribas 7, Akapo 6, Regalón 6, Juanma 7, Ripa 7, Natalio 2 (Bedoya 76min 5), David Gonzalez 5 (Lever 52min 5), Pedraza 7, Vicente 6 (Pedro 83min), Julio Alvarez 3, Sergi 7. The priceless win cements Tenerife’s playoff place. Remember, Barca B do not count for the promotion places, so Tenerife are, essentially, third. If teams are level on points, it’s the headto-head record that matters - and Tenerife would win that against all their rivals! So they are just four points from automatic promotion, and their target, Eibar, got an excellent win at Real Madrid Castilla. But they have a tough run-in. They will do well to get three points from their away matches, and all their home games are against teams with something to play for. Their small squad is also getting stretched. As for the others, Las Palmas have a horror run-in. The next three matches are massive, and could hardly be tougher. They are also face Castilla and Ponferradina, who are fighting for their lives. It’s not much better for Recreativo, who have only one win from their last eight games, and Real Murcia, who face a horrible last four matches. Sporting, only one win in nine, will do well to get a play-off place as they finish with Barca B, Zaragoza and then Tenerife. So all things considered, we are very well placed. The next two matches are very winnable, while Cordoba and Sabadell, arguably, could be finished for the season by time they face CDT.

James Place make a move

WITH the First Division seemingly sown up, the battle for Direct Telecom Pool League’s Second Division crown is starting to heat up. James Place, on course for a top-three finish, may just have had a hand in deciding the league winners after performing twice this week. They eased past Tenerife Pool Tables on Tuesday, but their result the previous night against Palms B was the important one. They were good value for the win and, while the top two may have scooted past them, they look spot-on for third place. Quick hat-tip for TPT’s young Harley, who continues to shine. On Tuesday he won two matches, including one against James. The kid is gonna be brilliant! Inn The Pink B went into their game on Tuesday knowing that Palms B had lost, and that they could go four points clear. But Exiles B, flying high them-

selves, had something to say and earned themselves a creditable draw. The gap at the top is just two points and Palms will feel they got away with one. There is all to play for … Terrace Bar B must have wished the season started at Christmas as they are the in-form team and have their sights set firmly on a top-five finish. They were in winning form again this week, but they were given a good game by Picasso’s A and had to earn their win. Elsewhere, Hoppys Bar came out with a good win against Gaffers C. Tenerife Hammers A continued their unbeaten First Division streak. They were too good for Dreamers A, but the Los Cristianos boys made a match of it. They were 6-2 down, pulled back to 6-4 only for the Hammers to find that extra gear. Gaffers A are still chasing and they were too good for Toscales A.

Paul: Over land, and over the moon THE finishing line is in sight, and it has been an interesting first season for the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. A glance at the table and you can really split it down the middle in terms of managers. The top 40 teams represent those managers who have taken it seriously and probably chop and change their teams about, whereas the bottom 40 comprises the just-for-a-bit-of-fun managers. Looking at some in the top half of the table, though, there are some real football fans who have not done very well. A few people will kicking themselves and, I suspect, next season will tell a different story. The Team of the Week is representative of the teams winning games at the minute.

Crystal Palace, Everton and Arsenal all have two players apiece, while the rest of the team is made up of representatives from Southampton, Liverpool, Spurs, Swansea and Manchester City. I expect to see a few players from the lower clubs featuring over the final three weeks, with the relegation battle still in full flow. At the top of the Oasis Fm league, it looks as though the title will go to Steve Schofield. He had a little wobble, but he’s come Knowing Man Utd fan Steve and based on this potential triumph, I expect he will be applying for the vacant manager’s job at Old Trafford! Team of the Week goes to Paul Tregent; his Over land and sea came in with an impressive 93 points. In the battle of the DJs,

Adi is still looking for a top-10 finish. He is in there at the minute, but it is close, Roscoe is on a late charge as he looks to narrow the 40-point gap, but the games are running out.

Chris Elkington has lost ground and sits 45 points behind Roscoe after being ahead of him for most of the season. And as for Maggie, there’s always next year!

Premier League Preview

By Adi Benson AS Queen once sang, Another One Bites The Dust, and this time it is highprofile David Moyes, who has been sacked by Man Utd.

As the United fans celebrate, all other football fans are lamenting the decision after watching them falter so much under the guidance of Moyes. Evergreen Ryan Giggs takes temporary charge, and he will be happy they face Norwich this weekend. Soton v Everton (Saturday, 12.45pm) Southampton can’t better their current league position and, over the last couple of games, they’ve played like a team already on their holidays. It has been a relatively good season for them but for me, they should have been pushing for a Europa League place after showing good form before 2014. Everton have surpassed all of our expectations. We all scoffed pre-season when Martinez took the job on and said Champions League qualification was his target. But they have very nearly achieved it. If they hadn’t slipped up against Palace, it would have been in their hands. But they now need Arsenal to drop points. Prediction: Away win Swansea v Aston Villa (Saturday, 3pm) The Swans sealed Premier League safety last week at Newcastle. It took an injury time goal at the end of the first half, and an injury time penalty at the end of the second half. But that won’t have bothered the players. They will now want to finish the season on a high and will look at this fixture as a great opportunity to take another three points. Villa fans are starting to get restless with their manager and are becoming more vocal about the situation.

They flirted with relegation last year, and hoped for more this year once Paul Lambert assembled his own squad. But they have been poor. They have just about done enough to stay up, but they need to make changes over the summer - or else next year will be more of the same. Prediction: Home win Stoke v Spurs (Saturday, 3pm) Stoke are now looking at a top-10 finish. Mark Hughes came in and changed the club’s playing style of the club, and they’ve looked good at times. But they have also struggled against the lower-placed clubs, which has cost them an even higher finish. Worse still is that Palace are just a point behind them, with exmanager Tony Pulis at the helm. They will not want to relinquish this place! Spurs and Tim Sherwood are great entertainment. He just picks names out of a hat on a Saturday morning and says, “Get on with it”, but they are getting results. They should win a Europa League place, but they’ll be disappointed as their season promised so much more. Prediction: Away win West Brom v West Ham (Saturday, 3pm) This won’t be a game for the purists. The Baggies are by no means safe, but I felt they gave a good account of themselves against Man City and, if they can apply the same effort in this game they should take

the points. They just need to sort out the defensive mistakes which have seen them concede late goals in the last few matches. The West Ham booboys were out in force against Sam Allardyce last weekend. But tough-nut Sam shrugged it off, saying all fans are the same when the team are not winning. Another loss here will pile the pressure on. I’m not sure he will go before the end of the season, but I can’t see him being there next season. Prediction: Home win Fulham v Hull (Saturday, 3pm) This is a huge game for Fulham. They know that if they can beat Hull, dependent on other games, they could climb out if the bottom three. That would be a big fillip mentally, but they can’t be worrying about other results. They need to win their own games, and this fixture against Hull is a must - it is that simple. Hull are safe and they will be happy with that. They also have an FA Cup Final ahead, and the prospect of playing in Europe next season. However, a loss here would make for a nervy final couple of games, so I expect a strong performance from them. Prediction: Draw Man Utd v Norwich (Saturday, 5.30pm) So Ryan Giggs makes his debut as caretaker manager at Old Trafford! He is really in a nolose situation, and the fans will be behind him.

And if the team don’t perform, it will all be down to Moyes. Teams normally respond after the sacking of a manager, and the fans will be expectant. The players are used to big games and shouldn’t be affected by the weight of expectation. But it won’t be easy for them, Norwich, who are fighting for survival, gave Liverpool a big scare, and they are aware that Utd have been stuttering all season. They will be primed to have a really good go. Teams with their backs against the walls are dangerous - and Utd need to be wary of this! Prediction: Draw Sunderland v Cardiff (Sunday, 12 noon) A six-pointer is a cliché often used, and, if any game sums it up, then it is this one. It really is a must-in affair because I suspect the loser will be relegated. Sunderland are on a roll, and that point against Man City and three massive points against Chelsea will have really given them a shot in the arm. They also have the advantage of a game in hand, and that could be the difference between survival or relegation. I believe that had Cardiff kept Malkay Mac-

kay (pictured)in charge, they would have been safe. They have gone backwards in football terms and their league position reflects this. And if they do stay up, it will be more down to the other teams around them than their own doing. Prediction: Home win Liverpool v Chelsea (Sunday, 2.05pm) Liverpool have so far cleared every hurdle put in front of them, but against Norwich they again showed the defensive frailties which have blighted them this season. If it were not for their attacking style and goal-scoring exploits, they certainly would not be challenging for the Premier League crown. I think they will run out of steam against Chelsea, who will sit back and soak up the pressure for the first 15 minutes. They will look to counter-attack - and the longer they frustrate Liverpool, the more they will grow into the game. Mourinho has been at times this season a pantomime dame, but if anybody can stop Liverpool it’s him. It’s not even a question of whether he will play a weakened team as he is still chasing Champions League glory. That’s be-

cause he suffered injuries and suspensions to key players on Tuesday in Madrid and will have to do with what’s left? But who, apart from Liverpool fans, would bet against him? Prediction: Away win C Palace v Man City (Sunday, 4.10pm) What a start to the year Palace have had! Early doors, way back in the autumn, they looked dead and buried. Ian Holloway stepped down and in came Tony Pulis, who has transformed the club and the players. They are now one of the in-form teams, and Selhurst Park is a difficult place to visit. The Eagles have taken no prisoners and will be relishing the arrival of Man City. Their big reputation will not faze them, and they will view this one as another big scalp to claim. City will be on the hunt for points, but they could be without Yaya Toure and David Silva, the two players that are City’s heartbeat. You’d think they would be okay with the quality squad they have, but players coming in have been underwhelming. They need a win, of course, but it is a potential banana skin. Prediction: Away win Arsenal v Newcastle (Monday, 8pm) Arsenal need Champions League football and an FA Cup win, if only to paper over the cracks of a poor season. They looked genuine title contenders at one point, but injuries, as is always the way with them, have cost Arsene Wenger’s men dearly. This is a repetitive problem, and you feel they should have looked at the medical side of things. But the injury toll has reared its head again. They need to keep winning to hold Everton off, and they’ll look at this clash as one they will win. Newcastle have been poor over the last dozen games, with fans accusing the board of lacking ambition. Plus, they sold their best player in Yohan Cabaye. A top-10 finish is more or less guaranteed, but that is not good enough for their fans, who wanted a shot at a European place or a good cup run. Prediction: Home win
