GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH…
THE 20th FIFA World Cup got underway last night (Thursday) and, over the next month, all the eyes of the world will be fixed on Brazil.
It is the second time Brazil has hosted the competition, the last one being in 1950. But this year’s event bears little resemblance. That’s because 64 matches will be played in 12 cities, reaching an expected three billion TV viewers all over the planet. Over half-a-billion dollars in prize money will be distributed among the 32 competing nations, and there is a raft of improvements for this tournament. For the first time, goalline technology will be introduced in an attempt to reduce the amount of controversial decisions. At the last World Cup four years ago, England were denied an equalising goal against Germany, despite the whole world seeing the ball five yards behind the line! Also, referees will use Vanishing Spray to ensure players do not encroach at free-kicks. The sprain paint-designed tool is common in South America, but has never been used at a major tournament before. The “paint” evapo-
rates after a minute and, again, should reduce controversial decisions. Millions of fans will descend from the four corners of the globe and, while security is tight, the biggest problems will come from the locals.
There have been protests for years over Brazil hosting the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Billions of dollars have been spent on the infrastructure, while millions of starving people live in shanty towns and abject poverty. There have been numerous strikes, including a paralysing one at the country’s major airports by workers. Even this week, there have been violent clashes between protesters and security forces. In Sao Paolo, just hours before the open-
ing match between Brazil and Croatia last night (Thursday), police fired tear gas and used rubber truncheons in an attempt to disperse a protest, while a separate demo saw police releasing tear grenades. During the subsequent panic, a CNN producer was hit and suffered a broken arm. Further protests are planned before every match, and many people fear this will take the gloss away from what promises to be an exceptional tournament.
The hosts are the clear favourites with bookies, but many pundits feel it will be Brazil’s arch rivals who will lift the cup on 13th July. On paper, Argentina have the best squad, but they have struggled in recent tournaments. Holders Spain are again well-fancied, and there are two Canarians in Vicente del Bosque’s 23 man squad. Both Manchester City’s David Silva, who was born in Arguinegín, in Gran Canaria’s Mogan, and Tenerife’s Barcelona forward Pedro, lifted the cup in South Africa in 2010. Of course, all the bars will be showing the matches live and again there will be public screenings of the action in Santa Cruz. Matches will be shown on Avenida de Anaga, thanks to a collaboration between the Santa Cruz Development department of the Town Hall and DG Trade and Hyundai, who are sponsoring the event. They have funded the installation of the latest giant High Definition screens, which will be the centre point of a big World Cup Fan Park meeting area. Florentino Guzman Plasencia, Santa Cruz Deputy Mayor and CEO of the Development Corporation, said: “This activity does not involve any financial outlay by the city coffers, since it has the sponsorship and
collaboration of private companies. “This private partnership is essential in these times as it would not have been feasible to install giant screens in the capital of Tenerife otherwise. “We expect a lot of people to want to enjoy the matches together, and the atmosphere will be brilliant. We will start this Friday (today) with the Spain v Netherlands match, and we will all be cheering on La Roja.” Most of the other matches will also be shown, including England v Italy tomorrow (Saturday) and Monday’s Germany-Portugal clash. Meanwhile, local duo Cormack are again making waves with their England song Bangers and Mash. The singalong song, first brought out for the 2010 World Cup, has been snapped up by Sony-Emi and is featured on their flagship Three Lions - World Cup Anthems 2014 CD. Their song is alongside the Baddiel & Skinner classic, plus songs by Queen, Journey, Johnny Cash, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Survivor, Ant & Dec, Tony Christie and Elvis Presley! The video to the song has had over half-a-million Youtube hits, and the song is constantly winning online polls to name the nation’s favourite England World Cup tune. *World Cup pull-out chart, P20.

Canaries knock spots of the rest CHICKENPOX in the Canary Islands seems unaffected by the Ministry for Health’s decision to withdraw vaccines from pharmacies.
The number of cases has actually dropped, and there have been just 1,962 reported in the Canaries, against last year’s figure of 3,548. In contrast, Aragón has seen a sharp rise in cases, from 1,588 to 3,456, which has prompted an outcry in the area’s health authorities. The vaccines were withdrawn because of a change in recommendations, which are said
to reflect the relative threat of the disease in any given area. By withdrawing the vaccines from most of Spain’s regions, a more accurate picture of the disease’s development and threat can be assessed, making epidemics more traceable. The decision, however, was not met with universal approval, but many communities were given no choice in the matter. The distance of the Canary Islands from the mainland could be a contributing factor to the lowered rate of chickenpox, and the nearness of other communities to each other on the mainland could have the opposite effect.
Santa Cruz vandals - at the double! VANDALISM cases in Tenerife’s capital more than doubled in 2013, according to Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez.
He suggests people should love their city more - but try telling that to the hooligans! There were 1,934 cases of vandalism reported last year, accounting for some 3,000 residents involved in incidents concerning street furniture (benches and litter bins), 122 cases in green areas and parks, and 417 others such as litter bugs and graffiti.
These figures mean that vandalism cases accounted for over 30% of incidents attended by police. Bermúdez is “alarmed” at the increase in the city’s vandalism cases, and has invited residents to reflect on their behaviour, particularly those who toss cigarette butts on to the ground. He described this behaviour a “lack of civility” and added: “City employees are tired of cleaning the daily accumulation of butts and cigarette packets in gardens, streets and parks.” A specialist unit have been working to combat these problems, and José Alberto Díaz-Es-
tébanez, Councillor for Public Safety and Mobility, says they are already stretched to their limits, dealing most commonly with dogends, illegal posters and general litter. But there was happier news. Traffic accidents in Santa Cruz fell for the third consecutive year, down 15% on 2012 to a total of 2,518 incidents. The number of arrests for road-safety offences actually increased in the year, and 15,911 fines were issued for road-related offences, the majority (68%) for illegal parking. In 2012 there were 13,983 fines issued, showing a rise of just under 14%.

Passport nightmare for holiday-makers THOUSANDS of families may not be able to holiday in the Canary Islands this summer because of chaos in the UK Passport Office.
Workers there are facing a mounting backlog in applications for new passports and renewals. As many as 500,000 people may not get their documents before their planned departure date because the understaffed department is struggling to deal with the annual surge in applications. Labour and Tory MPs have warned that the service is in turmoil, and say they have had hundreds of complaints from constituents about delays. Making changes to passports, or issuing new ones, is taking twice as long as usual. People have even been advised to pay up to £55.50 extra each to get passports fast-tracked, which should guarantee they arrive on time. To help cope with the
crisis, 25% of staff employed to detect fraudulent paperwork have been transferred to help process the thousands of delayed applications. But David Hanson, Labour’s immigration spokesman, has warned that reducing the size of fraud teams is a “real worry to the integrity and security of the passport system”. He says Labour MPs have been inundated with more than 400 complaints in the past six weeks from constituents struggling to get passports in time for holidays and trips abroad. The Passport Office, part of the Home Office, has received some 300,000 more applications since January than in the same period last year. It blames the surge on “the improving economy and a rise in holiday bookings”. The problem is not just a UK based one. Ex pats in Tenerife now have to send their passports to Belfast to be renewed and it’s understood many people here are also nervously waiting for this problem to be resolved.
Anti-fire brigade could cost us 6m TENERIFE’S Fire Prevention and Extinction campaign was launched this week to counteract the forest-fire threat we face every year.
It will run until midOctober and will be able to deploy at least 300 people in the event of danger. There is an available budget of around 1.5 million euros, and the Cabildo has the use of a Tenerife-based helicopter, which will cost more than half that sum. It arrives on Monday
and will be able to access any fires as quickly as possible. The plan also includes provision for technical support and staff training. Further funding has been received from Europe for fire-prevention campaigns and activities. Around six million euros has been granted
to keep the Island safe, enabling 130 people to carry out planning, investigation and environmental work in anticipation since last November. Part of their work included clearing forest trails to create firewalls, and the removal of dry, highly flammable vegetation.
Mystery as cops raid Land Registry offices
A SPECIALIST Guardia Civil team raided the Tenerife Land Registry offices in Santa Cruz this week.
Numerous items were seized and several statements were taken, although the case is under a gagging order. Plain-clothed officers entered the building on Monday, to the surprise of staff on duty. They made their way to two Land Registry offices, with the full co-operation of Santa Cruz’s Executive Finance Officer Sara
Anguita and the Registry’s provincial manager. The officers targeted one official, who refused to leave his/her place of work, arousing suspicion that the person could have been the reason for the police visit. Just one arrest has been made, and that person was sent home, but he/she will be required to give further statements. Computer equipment was seized, and the two offices under investigation were sealed off. Officers from the Judicial Police’s group, which investigates crimes against the
administration, were assisted by a court clerk. The team are believed to have been sent from Madrid - probably because the Land Registry is part of the general administration of the State. And if a case does come to court, it will be handled in Madrid. The Land Registry holds comprehensive information on urban, rustic and other properties. Entry is compulsory but free, which differentiates it from the Property Registry. The Registry is under the control of the Ministry of Public Finance and Administration.

Oil-drill protesters swamp the Islands
The editor says...
Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Going Back with no Future ANOTHER week and still no concrete news to give you on the reopening of the Los Cristianos Sunday market.
I know it’s incredibly frustrating for everyone involved, and for the life of me I cannot see what anyone has to gain by this ongoing situation. I hope it gets sorted very quickly. Talking of sorting things out, why are people surprised about the backlog in getting passports renewed? Summer holidays are just a matter of days away, and everyone has left it to the last minute. Again! When you get your passport, you have 10 years to renew it, so why wait until you have seconds before your holiday? The UK is not here, where most of us use our passport on a weekly basis. Once you’ve booked your holiday, sort out the passport. Simples! In fact my passport got an airing last weekend with the annual
trip to Gran Canaria. You know those people who wish it were 1985 all over again? Well, they don’t need to fire up the Delorean - simply get the ferry east and bosh, it’s 30 years ago. I’m sure lots of people love the place and return there every year, but for the life of me I don’t get it. I’ve spent this week appreciating everything we have here in Tenerife. Life is not perfect here, but at least it’s 2014. I spoke with one bar owner in Puerto Rico, who told me trade is down 25% compared to last year. And that was down 33% on the year before. And he has one of the busiest bars! He told me workers don’t have to ask for special prices. “Why?” I asked him. “Because everyone without a wrist band is a worker! Bloody All Inclusive!” What happens on tour stays on tour, but if you happen to see this man, give him a nudge for me!

UP to 60,000 people gathered in Santa Cruz on Saturday to protest about Repsol’s proposed testdrilling for oil.
And throughout the Canary Islands, there were widespread protests by groups on the same day. Overall, an estimated 217,000 people gathered across all seven islands to complain about the scheme, which was authorised by the Spanish Government, despite fierce opposition from
the Canaries’ ruling body. Lanzarote had some 35,000 protesters, and there were a further 20,000 in Fuerteventura. Support was high in these two islands, naturally, because the test drilling will take place between these easternmost islands and the Morocco coast. These protests were the biggest seen on Tenerife since Unelco planned to place highvoltage cables above Vilaflor in 1999. Then, more than 100,000 people took to
the streets in a case which was eventually taken to the European parliament in 2002 - and quashed! On Saturday, angry protesters carried placards and banners in support of investigation into renewable energy, as well as many which declared that the Canary Islands were “not for sale”. There were calls for the resignation of Gran Canaria-born Minister for Industry and Energy José Manuel Soria from the predominantly young crowd, who favour cleaner
energy solutions. The massive crowd were, on the whole, peaceful. And thanks to a discreet police presence, there were few incidents. Environmental groups such as Greenpeace were in attendance, as well as SEO Birdlife, Ecologists in Action, WWFAdena and Friends of the Earth. These groups have so far collected nearly 200,000 signatures in an online petition at savecanarias.org There were also protests in Madrid, Berlin and New York.
Learning a jobless lesson TENERIFE’S Spanish Confederation of Management Organisations (CEOE) believes that poor education and training are not cutting unemployment in the Canaries. A CEOE report paints a poor picture about training jobless people for re-entry into the jobs market. But it says early “dropouts” leaves these people without the minimum educational requirements to meet the demands of work opportunities.
The report also suggests that educational levels in the Canaries are among the lowest in Spain, particularly in reading and maths. The report also condemns language skills, particularly when considering the importance of tourism in the Islands. Despite its worries, the authors stress that tourism is one industry in which jobs can be generated for those with lower levels of education, training and experience.
While the economy is showing signs of recovery, however small and slow moving, the construction industry is one that concerns CEOE officials. There is a huge stock of unsold housing in the Islands, and they believe that the construction industry recovery will be “lethargic” for several years. Estimates by the EU suggest that only 15% of future jobs will be available for those without minimum educational standards, and Tener-
ife’s CEOE officials believe this could leave “hundreds of thousands” of people in the Canaries destined never to find suitable work. In response, the CEOE suggests that entrepreneurs forge links with education authorities to develop strategies to enable people to return to education. They could complete their studies, and, therefore, be given a better chance of employment in the long term - and have the ability to be financially independent.

Just what is occuring inside Mount Teide? IT sits there so serenely, overseeing our lives here in Tenerife. But have you ever wondered what on earth is going on inside Mount Teide?
Well, we will soon know because a group of scientists are working on an incredible project to unravel the facts. The boffins, from the Canaries Institute of Vulcanology (Involcan), Tokyo University’s Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) and Italy’s National Nuclear Physics Institute (INFN), are putting their heads together to find out. They have installed cosmic particle detectors (muons) in the cone of the volcano, and in the old peak (Cumbre Vieja) as part of the research project Muon Cosmic rays. It has been labelled a Technique for Observing the Inside of Volcanoes, which is run by
the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information (Acissi), and has central European funding. The actual study area is relatively small, and “passive cosmic particle detectors” have been installed in both sites, covering around one square metre each.
The systems will allow reception of incoming muon flux which, in turn, will help to map the geological structure they pass through. The detectors will be kept in place for around six months. Hopefully, the information received will shed some light on the density dis-
tribution of both volcanic systems. It should also enable the scientists to investigate density variations associated with the movement of fluids through the rock. The project is the latest in a recent run of geophysical, geodetic and geochemical stud-
ies, which are helping the team to gain a better understanding of the volcanic structural features of both Teide and Cumbre Vieja, and how they relate to volcanic activity. Little is actually known about the internal geometrical structure of these volcanoes, despite
arguments which suggest the structure may play an important role not only in future eruptions, but also other geological processes, including landslides - which have been prevalent and, sometimes, catastrophic in the Canaries’ geological history. So, what are Muons, and why are they important? Cosmic Muons are elementary particles, generated in the atmosphere, continually bombarding the earth. They do not exist permanently in the Universe, and are found in cosmic rays only - or they can be created in laboratories. The technique of Muon Radiography is a relatively new area of research. It has been pioneered in Japan, where it has been used to gain visual access to the internal structure of volcanoes by studying density distribution. In essence, images are generated in a similar way to X-ray radiography. So now we know!
El Hierro’s national park boost A PROPOSED marine park on El Hierro would be a “seal of quality and sustainable economy for the island”.
That’s the view of Fernando Gutiérrez, a representative of La Rest-
inga’s fishing fraternity. And if the project goes ahead, he believes it would create the fifth Canaries’ national park. Fishermen are concerned that the plan is not definite, following a meeting between the Ministry for the Environment, Food and Ag-
riculture, and fishing industry representatives. It was held to assess the impact of a national park on the commercial fishing industry, taking into account La Restinga’s Marine Reserve - and the new volcano forming off the island’s south coast,
which began almost three years ago. The scary eruptions had a serious impact on employment in the area’s fishing industry - and also on residents. So much so that the sector received grants totalling around one million euros from the Canary Islands Gov-
ernment and European funds. Happily, the area has now “fully recovered”, according to Gutiérrez. After 30 areas were considered initially for the new marine national park, the Environment Ministry seems keen to settle on El Hierro; not least be-
cause the fisheries sector has not rejected the proposal, unlike those in Galicia, Andalucia and the Balearic Islands. The Ministry estimates that income generated from the national park could reach 2-4m euros annually.

Quick tests to stop smear fear WOMEN should be offered on-thespot smear tests during regular appointments with their doctor.
All women in the UK aged between the ages of 25 and 65 are offered the test regularly every three years to screen for cervical cancer. A smear test can also detect pre-cancerous cells which could lead to cancer, making it a highly effective preventative measure. The recommendation comes from the think tank Demos, working alongside Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust charity. Jo Salter, from Demos, told Sky News: “We think doctors are really crucial to tackling this problem. “They are the gatekeepers who invite women to be screened, but often they are a barrier because the women can’t get an appointment, or because their GP is quite off-putting about it.” The Demos study found that 3,000 women
are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year. Of those, 900 will die from the disease. Cervical cancer is the UK’s third-most-common gynaecological cancer. Currently, just 78% of eligible women take up the test - but with a 100% screening rate, the number of those diagnosed with the illness would be cut in half. But for hard-pressed GPs, it is another thing to have to fit into an appointment slot. Dr David Lloyd, from The Ridgeway Surgery in Harrow, Middlesex, said: “In a 10-minute appointment, we have to cover the problem that the patient came with in the first place. Then, if she hadn’t had a recent smear, we’d have to have a discussion with the patient. “Some women may not want to have a smear at that stage as it’s a bit more than just having your blood pressure taken. And then there’s a little extra time on everything else.”

Dear round of drinks for mums and dads… PARENTS who let their kids drink alcohol could face heavy fines of 3,000 euros or more.
The move is part of the Spanish Government Health Ministry’s push to curb under-age drinking. If the draft law is passed, it will be the first European law of its kind and will categorise breaches into three categories. Firstly, a “slight” breach will deliver fines of 60 to 60,000 euros. The next level will see fines of up to 300,000 euros, while serious breaches will cost penalties of between 40,001g and 600,000 euros. The degree of responsibility will be determined by numerous factors, including possession, sale, or the obstruction of police carrying out their duties. Further aspects of the draft law will aim to ban the sale of alcohol
to minors, regardless of parental consent, and the restriction of advertising which glamorises alcohol (similar to that which the tobacco industry has undergone in recent years). Fines for parents who allow their children to drink will, the government hopes, serve as a deterrent. In Spain, only 18.2% of teenagers abstain from alcohol, making it the
most abused juvenile drug in the country. A recent survey on drugs in school found that “alcohol is the most-widely-psycho active substance used among young people aged from 14 to 18 years. In 2013, 83.9% of this age group consumed alcohol at some time in their lives, 81.9% did once in the past year and 74% in the last month. Also, just two
out of 10 had never consumed alcohol.” If these findings appear worrying, the “binge-drinking” culture is also becoming more prominent in Spain. The term “binge” is applied when five or more drinks are consumed in under two hours, and four out of 10 Spanish teenagers (aged 14-18) have admitted to bingedrinking regularly.

Have a heart, and don’t take aspirin DOCTORS have been warned not to prescribe aspirin as a matter of routine for a common heart condition that increases the risk of a stroke.
Guidelines from the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) are set to recommend other drugs instead for patients with an irregular heartbeat, called atrial fibrillation. Warfarin, or similar blood-thinning medicine, is best says NICE, and the advice will affect hundreds of thousands of patients. Those who are unclear about whether they should continue to take aspirin should speak to their doctor. But experts say most doctors already follow the advice to prescribe blood-thinners other than aspirin and that the guidelines are “playing catch-up”. It is the first time they
will have been updated since they were first issued in 2006. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm problem, affecting up to 800,000 people in the UK around one in 100. In AF, the heart cannot work as well as it should and blood clots can form, which, in turn, increases the risk of a stroke. Aspirin has been used for years to help protect patients from strokes, but mounting evidence suggests the drug’s benefits are too small, compared with other treatments. The NICE guidelines for England and Wales look set to say that although daily aspirin might still be beneficial for some patients, most should be offered something else as well - or instead. NICE says warfarin or a newer type of oral anticoagulant is often best, while the British Heart Foundation says most doctors are already doing this. Professor Peter Weiss-
berg, BHF medical director, said: “Strokes caused by atrial fibrillation are both common and preventable, but only if the abnormal heart rhythm is identified in the first place and if effective drugs are given to prevent bloodclot development. “The revised NICE guidance reflects accumulating evidence that warfarin and the newer anti-coagulants are much more effective than aspirin at preventing strokes. “This does not mean aspirin is not important and effective at preventing heart attacks and strokes in other circumstances. “Patients who are unclear on whether or not they should continue to take aspirin should speak to their doctor.” But Professor Peter Elwood, an expert at Cardiff University, warned that it could be unsafe for people to stop taking aspirin suddenly. “If aspirin is to be stopped, it should be stopped gradually,” he said.
Japan keep on whaling SHINZO ABE, Japan’s Prime Minister, says the country will resume its annual whale hunt in the Antarctic, despite a court ruling and fierce criticism.
In March, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that the whaling programme was not for scientific research, as Japan had claimed. Australia, backed by New Zealand, brought the case against Japan in 2010. The country stopped the Antarctic hunt after the ruling, but vessels have carried on hunting Minke whales along Japan’s northern coast, with officials saying these are also for research purposes. How Mr Abe intends to get around the in-
ternational court ruling remains unclear, but the Japanese PM said: “I want to aim for the resumption of commercial whaling by conducting whaling research.” Mr Abe, referring to the respect given to these giant fish by those in towns where whaling takes place, said: “It is regrettable that this part of Japanese culture is not understood.” The ICJ said Japan had killed around 3,600
Minke whales since 2005 under its Antarctic whaling programme, known as JARPA II. It also maintained that the country had not justified the whaling quotas it had set. During the court case, Australia argued that Japan’s programme was commercial whaling in disguise. But Japanese officials said the case was an attempt to impose Australia’s cultural norms on them.

By Mariano Zunino Siri
OVER the last few months, I have been asked to cover various topics in this column.
I appreciate the feedback, and feel free to ask me about any general legal concerns you have. One subject I am often asked about is Conveyancing. To full understand what this involves takes a bit of space, so over the next two issues I will explain all! Conveyancing is a legal term. It involves the process of the paperwork needed for buying or selling a property and its transference by Public Title Deed (Escritura). The Public Deed is signed before a Public Notary (notario). The Notary is a kind of official clerk of the Government (depending on the Ministry of Justice), which certifies the act (purchase/sale), identifies the parties (buyer and seller) and enables the Deed to be registered at the Land Registry, among other tasks involved. Despite this, it is quite usual that before signing the Public Deed, the parties sign a private contract (normally issued by a lawyer). This contract is very important because it will regulate the future relations between the parties. The signature of the Deed is the most important act within the conveyancing. Take into account
17 CW
Importance of conveyancing
that the notary verifies only that the parties agree, and certifies the content of the Deed. But he is not protecting you against fraud. Hence, that is why it is most important to hire the services a lawyer to carry out these steps needed to: 1) Verify that a property belongs to the vendor, whose name should be recorded at the Land Registry (Registro de la Propiedad). 2) Verify that the property is registered at the Land Registry, and that its boundaries and area are accurate. 3) Verify that the property has no charges or encumbrances. In case
the property has charges, to assure that those are to be cancelled before buying. 4) Check that the property is updated in the payment of IBI (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles), Community of Owners (Comunidad de Propietarios), if any, and other charges. 5) Check that the property has planning or building permits (in case of a plot). If buying from a developer, to ensure that the property has Certificate of Inhabitation (Cédula de Habitabilidad) in case of residential property or First Occupation Licence (Licencia de Primera Ocupación) in
case of premises. Building certificates are issued by the City Council and are needed to apply for services such as electricity and water (boletín de instalaciones). 6) If the property is part of a condominium (Comunidad de Propietarios), check that the property is updated. The vendor has to present a certificate issued by the administrator of the Comunidad de Propietarios, stating that the property has no outstanding debts. 7) Ensure that the Title Deed to be signed has no objection to be registered. Eventually, deal with registration of the Deed at the Land Regsitry.
Many estate agents carry out the mentioned checking but, nevertheless, it is recommended that you have a lawyer. Rivero’s Repsol riddle CANARIAN President Paulino Rivero claims his government lacks knowledge of the environmental impact of petrol giant Repsol’s imminent test drilling.
He told Parliament on Monday that he had not
seen the complete contents of a report into the drilling, in the waters off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, which was given the green light on the eve of Dia de Canarias at the end of last month. In the session, Rivero took a question from Australia Navarro that related to an “increased tension” between the
parties involved, and which also suggested that José Manuel Sori, the Gran Canaria-born Minister for Industry and Energy, had “handed Repsol the deal on a plate.” Rivero hit back, saying that the Environment Department was “cooking up” a negative report in the hope of stopping similar in-
vestigations proposed for the waters off the Balearic Islands. Rivero accused Navarro of encouraging a “rebellion” and making a speech littered with “biased insults” at the Guimerá Theatre during the Dia de Canarias celebrations on 30th May, which were marred by protesters.

TENERIFE’S Estrellas Theatre School is going from strength to strength, and is fast-becoming an international success.
This year, as they say in showbiz circles, the pupils of this performing arts school have absolutely smashed it, with exceptional results in their LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Drama) exams. Maureen Sands, who runs the school, said:
13th June 2014 - 19th June 2014
“We’ve had our bestever LAMDA results, with 85% distinctions.” Such is the popularity of Estrellas - North and South of the Island that more schools are being opened to cope
with the demand of youngsters, all eager to enrol, and some with that big hope of stardom to follow. The LAMDA exams are extremely important for youngsters hoping
to make their way into professional stage work. And how it has shown this year! Harrison and Jamie have been accepted into UK performance/dance schools. And Jamie is
auditioning for the part of Billy Elliot in the West End musical. He has one more audition to pass, and then he will be through to the Billy Elliott Summer School, where

a handful of kids will be chosen to play the part, in rotation. It really is an immense role because the musical is so popular, and it will give Jamie and Estrellas great kudos should he get through. Meanwhile, Harrison, just nine, won a part in the horror movie Don’t Grow Up, which was filmed over here - and he grabbed it with both hands, appeared for nine consecutive days of filming - and earning a good few euros. Maureen, who has run the school for nigh on five years it is actually celebrating its 10th anniversary - says with pride: “We have an incredible mixture of children at the school, ranging from the age of two right up to 18 and beyond. “The wonderful thing is that they are all here for different reasons. One third are extremely talented and their mums and dads want them to succeed. “One third are here because they enjoy the atmosphere. They know they can’t compete with the gifted ones, but they just love being involved. “And the other third are here for selfesteem. These are kids who are so shy it’s unbelievable. Their parents send them here, hoping they will blossom. And believe me, once I’ve had them
a few weeks, they come out of their shells.” There is so much going on with Estrellas right now. The school has new patrons in Anne Peters (former Boney M star) and Nick Page (Les Miserables actor and singer, and well known on the Tenerife entertainment circuit). Youngsters will showcase their talents in a Stars Variety Show next weekend (20th-21st June) in Puerto de la Cruz, and on 29th June in the Infanta Leonora,
Las Cristianos. Such is the popularity of Estrellas that Maureen now employs 15 people, and it is a wonder she can keep tabs on everything. A webpage in Spanish will soon be launched, and there is a onemonth summer school at Wingate (where the South school is based), from 7th July to 1st August The theatre school has even got its own “Tiny Tots” class for kids aged two to four, teaching
them rhythm and dance which opened recently. As Maureen says: “We cater for everyone, and it is such a joy to see the children all enjoying themselves and making such an impact over here. “They are not all going to become famous, which isn’t the object. But we have some really talented, up-andcoming stars. Watch this space!”

Natural World BBC2, 21:00 Wildlife documentary. David Attenborough narrates the story of Rodrigo Medellin, Mexico’s very own ‘Bat Man’. Since he first kept vampire bats in his bathroom as a child, Rodrigo has dedicated his life to saving them. Now Mexico’s most famous export, tequila, is at stake. Rodrigo’s beloved lesser long-nosed bat is crucial to the liquor - pollenating the plants the drink is made from. To save both, Rodrigo must track the bats’ epic migration across Mexico - braving hurricanes, snakes, Mayan tombs and seas of cockroaches. The threats are very real for not only Rodrigo and the bats, but also for anyone with a taste for tequila.

Paul and Penny Denby have lived on the sameexclusive South London estate for nearly 20 years. They are surrounded by pioneering houses built in the Arts and Crafts style in the 1920s, but they’re stuck in a dated 1940s mock Georgian home. That’s about to change, as they are knocking down their millionpound house to build a much bigger contemporary mansion. With its stark white render and huge expanses of glass, it aspires to be an exciting and classic piece of modern architecture, as pioneering in its own way as the original houses built on the estate. But Paul and Penny have hardly even changed the carpets in their old home, let alone built a house before. Soon the challenge of building this complex home starts to bite. And as the budget escalates, they can’t raise the extra £250,000 they need to finish the house. Will their grand design turn out to be the architectural masterpiece they’re aiming for, or just another monster in suburbia?

Four Rooms Channel 4, 19:00
The new series continues, with edge-ofthe-seat deals being struck over headturning collectables that members of the public are hoping to sell for life-changing money. Top dealers wait in four separate rooms, each ready to spend their personal fortunes on the enticing objects that come through their door. The one golden rule is that once a dealer’s offer has been turned down, the seller can never return to that room: the deal has gone forever. In this episode, Gordon Watson, Celia Sawyer, Alex Proud and David Sonnenthal fight it out over a pair of Muhammad Ali’s boxing boots, and go head to head over some antique big cat taxidermy. Also tempting them to spend big are explosive and provocative sculptures, and original artworks from hit horror films.
Big Brother: Power Trip Channel 5, 21:00
Highlights of the latest events inside the house. Emma Willis hosts as the housemates ruthlessly attempt to seize power, keep it and impose their will on the others. As ever, behind every mirror, multiple cameras will be tracing the housemates’ every move.

W C ch o ice The Dentists ITV1, 21.00
Whether it’s the whizz of the drill, the tension in the waiting room or the click and crack as a tooth is pulled out – the dentist is a location that sets our teeth on edge. In fact, it’s the nations number one fear. And that fear has meant many of us stay away until the pain gets too bad to bear. The consequence? Over 90% of British adults suffer from decaying or missing teeth and dentists are on the frontline in the battle to save Britain’s smiles. The Dentists goes behind the scenes of the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, delving into the intimate relationship between patients and dentists. This is a place that rebuilds lives as well as teeth. The programme reveals extraordinary stories from some of the 90,000 people who come through the hospital’s waiting rooms every year. The Dentists reveals the alarming effects of having a sweet tooth, how some dentists tackle their patients’ ‘dentophobia’, and also uncovers the world of facial reconstruction surgery - where dentistry meets plastic surgery in the 21st century. The programme follows recently qualified Kirsty Woodmason as she tackles her first multiple-extractions of the day.

Death is inevitable yet it is not a subject we find easy to talk about. Taboos around death can leave us poorly prepared for the loss of those we love and for our own mortality. In this series, five terminally ill people are brought together for regular weekends at a Cotswold manor house to talk frankly about their experience of living and dying as they contemplate the last months of their lives. This thought-provoking and poignant series tackles this difficult issue openly and honestly. The group’s illnesses are progressing, and putting affairs in order becomes more pressing. In this episode there are differences in opinion about how to tell a child that a parent is terminally ill, and Jayne continues the search for the son she gave up for adoption. Junior’s cancer is spreading but he’s determined to live until his 49th birthday.

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil ITV1, 19.00 Uruguay v England It looks a pivotal game in England’s World Cup campaign as they face Uruguay at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo. The fitness of Luis Suarez will be a talking point - the Liverpool striker terrorised Premier League defences all season but had minor knee surgery a month ago and may be lacking his usual sharpness. Suarez’s club team mates, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, have emerged as exciting prospects in Roy Hodgson’s young side and the England boss will be hoping his side can give themselves a real chance of qualifying from group D with a win. England have only played Uruguay once before at the World Cup - a 0-0 draw in the first group game in 1966 - which of course turned out to be quite a good campaign for Alf Ramsey’s side! Adrian Chiles is joined by former England men Glenn Hoddle, Ian Wright and Lee Dixon - for live coverage, with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke at Showtime’s Grand Final
Chloe brings IT took 13 heats around the Island’s karaoke bars before culminating in a superb Grand Final of Tenerife Loves Karaoke at Showtime last Friday.
In all, there were 14 finalists after the top two from the final heat at Leonardos earned a place in the final. Every heat was wellsupported, again proving that there is some amazing vocal talent here in Tenerife - and not just by the professional entertainers. This competition has attracted people from all walks of life, and the rules state that no more than 70% of your earnings should come from being paid as a singer. In 2014, the competition has been closer than ever. At heat level, on a number of occasions, the points separating the top six have been counted in decimal points. The judges for each heat comprised representatives from the bar, usually the compere and bar owner, and two representatives from Emcan Media. Over 30 judges have taken up the role over the last three months - and all said the same thing after each heat about the standard of singers and how hard it was to judge. The doors opened at 7.30pm on Grand Final night and, as usual, the venue was filling up fast.
There were no seating reservations so, as the competitors and their supporters arrived, the prime tables were taken up quickly. These events at Showtime always bring people together who do not see each other that often. And with the curtain going up at 8.30pm, there was plenty of time for everyone to catch up with
one another. The air was thick with excitement and anticipation - and it wasn’t long before singers were told to report backstage. The final confirmations were made on song choices and, moments later. the intro began. The evening was hosted by Oasis Fm presenter Jamie Droo, who settled the audi-
ence down before introducing all the competitors on stage, and name-checking them one by one as they took their seats, preparing for their big moment. The running order was decided with a live draw on Oasis Fm on Tuesday, with Jamie and EmCan Media director Chris Elkington. There was rapturous applause for every-
one, from all corners of the room from each of the singer’s support groups. The entire format production was exceptional, including a grand entrance for the judges. The Final panel comprised Elkington, sponsor Paul Shearman, of PS Photography, Cy Benson, one of the Island’s most respected vocalists and,
finally, Jo Lennard, leading lady in the The Sound of Musicals. None of the judges had seen any of the heats, which meant they had no pre-conceived ideas on any of the finalists. Once they had taken their places, they were asked how harsh they would be. Cy said he expected nerves might affect a singer’s tuning a lit-

tle and for this, he would be forgiving. He believes presentation is important, too, as it is generally the first impression a judge will get before the singer even produces a note. Luckily, none of the singers was in flip-flops and shorts so there was no need for Cy to mark anyone too harshly for their attire. Jo Lennard seemed to pick up on each of the singer’s individuality, and noticed even the most subtle of differences in their performances, pointing out accurately when a competitor’s interpretation of a song was enough

to make it sound like a new song. Anyone would think the first singer would have been the most nervous. But Chelsea Philpot appeared a lot less nervous than the host. She entered the stage with a huge smile and a good up-tempo song to start the competition. Susan Maugham’s Sixties’ song Bobby’s Girl was Chelsea’s choice - and perfect for the first performance of the night. This year,
the song choices were a nice mix of genres and tempos, which gave balance to the night and, considering this was a random draw for the order of play, proved the perfect running order. Songs such as Timewarp, from Alex Camacho-Hamilton, really got the place going, the majority of the audience joining in with the party dance moves. Kofi-Lee HopkinsTaylor, the youngest finalist at just 14, took
on a huge song - John Legend’s All Of Me. This was the first number to receive a standing ovation from the audience and the judges’ table. After round 1, there was a short break before the elimination round. This was the part where each of the singers was told, one, at a time, whether he/ she was through or going home. The highest pointscorers would go through to a “Sing-
round, where they would perform another song for the judges before finding out who would be taking away the 1,000-euro cash prize - and open the Tenerife Entertainment Awards on 12th October. The final three were Kofi-Lee, Stacey Tippett and Chloe Guy. The first to sing was Kofi Lee, who chose The Scripts’ For The First Time. Stacey was next with Elvis Presley’s If I Can Dream, which she dedicated to her late grandfather.
Finally, Chloe Guy sang Rather Be by Clean Bandit. Each singer had huge audience support - but there was a clear winner. Chloe wowed the judges in the first round with Emile Sande’s Read All About It, with her own twist, incorporating lyrics from Rihanna’s Diamonds, One Republic’s Apologise and Jessie J’s Who You Are. It was enough for her to take away the judges’ blessings - and the grand prize! It was tight at the top, with just 1.5 points separating Kofi in second place and, finally, third-place Stacey. Triumphant Chloe was asked to sing again, and she performed her winning song, Rather Be, joined by her family and friends and other contestants, who all agreed the right person won. It was a fabulous end to a tremendous night of quality entertainment, and a fabulous finale to the entire competition. Tenerife Loves Karaoke thanks everyone who took part, and it would not be possible without your continued support.

3, 2, 1 and you’re back in the room HOW would you define a speciality act? It’s a difficult one because if an act is unique and is the only one of its kind, does that make it a speciality act?
A speciality act is one which cannot be done without a certain set of skills from the performer. It is normally people who excel in what they are delivering and who have been passionate about their particular act for a lot longer than they have been on stage. Stage hypnosis has been providing audiences with fascination and very entertaining comedy for years. But just because someone becomes qualified in hypnosis, it does not necessarily mean that person would be able to step on stage and deliver a successful hypnosis show. To be on stage and perform is a calling and, no matter what the talent is, if that individual hasn’t got that yearning to be in front of an audience, the act will almost certainly fail. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with many hypnotists. Each had a
similar way of starting his/her show and inducing the volunteers into a hypnotic trance. They would have similar routines which rarely differed from one another. Recently, I have had the great pleasure of working with the Island’s premier stage hypnotist, Paul Hazel, and finally got to see with my own eyes what so many people talk about when they have seen his show. Paul arrived in Tenerife a little over a year ago. I remember about a month before his ar-
rival, seeing him advertise on the social network pages for entertainers available and got quite excited about the arrival of a stage hypnotist. This is an art that had not been seen in Tenerife for a fair few years, and it was the perfect time for a new act like this to work the hotels and show bars over here. Paul is so much more than a speciality act. Many hypnotists rely upon the fascination of the audience and are on stage for around an hour.
This normally involves the induction of volunteers, which normally takes 15 to 20 minutes and can lose the attention of the audience. However, Paul is different. To begin with, the actual meat of his show does not begin until all volunteers are under. I have seen this process so many times, but never have I been so engrossed until watching Paul. There is no clock-watching during this show and it lasts as long as it lasts. The show I watched was two hours and 15 minutes, from start to finish. When I wanted to book the hypnosis show, the managers were sceptical and, like many bars, they believe that people do not drink when there’s a hypnotist on show. So this problem was solved with discreet but pro-active table service. Nobody went thirsty and Paul is aware of this and works with the staff - even providing a glass-collector from his volunteers. The imagination of the individual being hypnotised is paramount to producing a good show. But I would say that the imagination of the hypnotist is even more important, and Paul’s show, full of fun, always
lasts more than 90 minutes. Without giving too much away about the content of his show, I would like to draw attention to some highlights to look out for when you see the show. Paul’s imagination shines when his invisible boomerang comes out, or his X-ray glasses when he convinces those in hypnotic states that these items
are real -and the reaction is hilarious. Paul Hazell is, by far, the best stage hypnotist I have ever worked with, and he received a firm handshake from me when confirming a regular booking. If you are lucky enough to receive a firm handshake from Paul while taking part in his show, I promise that you will never forget it. Get him booked!
GOOD LUCK SEB RECENTLY, New York soul singer Sebastian Whittaker has taken over ownership of Soul Train in San Eugenio, and I would like to wish him all the best in his new venture. Sebastian has been working here for almost 20 years. He also travels regularly throughout Europe to the many shows he performs. He has a velvety soul voice, and his versatility and gentle tones can be compared with those of the late Luther Vandross. Sebastian performs on the terrace every night - and later in the evening, on the main stage, with some of the Island’s finest soul singers. You will never be disappointed with Sebastian. He has such an engaging manner
with the audience, and a voice that can handle any song within the soul genre - and so much more. But Soul is what is on the entertainment menu, as the name of the bar suggests. Apparently, all you have to do when you go to see Sebastian is say to him, “Yeah Baby”, and he’ll buy you a shot. Why not give it a try?
DJ Si Palmer smashes Notorious
EARLIER this week I bumped into Tramps DJ Si Palmer, who is now getting geared up for the
summer in the main arena. However, Si has been moving around the venue and working in the different rooms. Tramps has three bars, with DJs playing different styles of music, and this week Si played in the Notorious R & B room. This is not his normal bag, but he did enough to make the papers. He
wasn’t shy about having such a brilliant night, either, and the banter soon began between regular Notorious DJ Snoopy and Si. Now, Snoopy has laid down the gauntlet and is ready to smash the summer. Regular summer DJ Scott Page will be taking up residence very soon. Scott has been coming to Tenerife for the summer celebrity events for as long as
I can remember and has a fabulous reputation. The relationship between all the DJ’s is second to none and they get on so well, but it is good to see a little inter-venue competition. Don’t forget, you can book VIP booths for the duration of the World Cup, and watch your favourite teams in style. Find them on Facebook at Tramps Tenerife.

By Stella from Robot CHOOSING the right skin moisturiser may seem confusing, but it’s actually quite simple if you follow a few guidelines.
My first rule of thumb? Don’t spend too much money! When choosing a moisturising face cream, take into consideration your skin type and condition, as well as whether you have any sensitivities or allergies to ingredients commonly used in skin-care products. Generally, it is best to try out any skin-care product before investing in a full-size purchase. Another thing to consider is product cost, as there can be a significant difference in the price between moisturisers even those sold by the same company. Cleansers and moisturisers are the most important skin products, particularly for softening dry skin. A skin moisturiser works by sealing moisture into the outer layer of the skin, and by pulling moisture from the inner layers of skin to the outer layer. Key ingredients which seal in moisture are petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin, and dimethicone. Glycerine, propylene glycol, proteins, urea, and vitamins help attract water into the outer layer of the skin. Some moisturisers also contain an alphahydroxy acid (AHA), which exfoliates dead skin, but these are good choices if you
How to find correct skin moisturiser
have very dry skin It may take some trial and error, so be patient. Follow these guidelines as you shop and, if you’re not getting the results you want, try a new one the next time: Look for common, active ingredients, such as lanolin, glycerine, or petrolatum. Glycerine is less likely than lanolin to cause an allergic reaction. Also important is picking a moisturiser made by company which recommended your beauty therapist. Go for added sunscreen. Protecting your skin from harmful sun damage is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking young, so buy a moisturiser with a sun-protection factor of at least 30. You’ll have to do some searching, but more and more companies are offering face and body moisturisers with sunscreen. But make sure it is skin-type appropriate. The skin on your face is thinner and more sensitive, so it’s a good idea to use a different moisturiser on your face than you do on your body, I recommend buying one that’s labelled “noncomedogenic” because it won’t clog your pores. But, of course, choose one that’s right for your skin type. If you know you have sensitive skin, it’s always a good idea to look for a moisturiser labeled hypo-allergenic. If you have oily skin, go with a light, oil-free moisturiser. If you have dry
skin, get something richer. And if you have combination skin, go with a lighter moisturiser for your whole face and dot drier areas with a heavier cream. Bear in mind that you may need a lighter lotion in the summer, and a cream or ointment in the winter. Consider using a moisturiser with retinol before going to bed. Retinol is vitamin A for your skin and works by increasing the speed at which your skin cells turn over. You can find it over the counter or by prescription, but use it carefully because it may cause a skin irritation. Moisturiser, depending on your skin type, is a take-it-or-leave-it product or a can’t-live-without-it item. But actually, nearly all skin types can benefit from some sort of moisturiser. Oily skin types might use moisturiser less often, but they actually need it just as much. That’s because people with oily or acne-prone skin often put drying products on, so their skin might start to produce more oil to balance it out. But using a light moisturiser (even one with oil-control properties) can help keep skin in balance and actually cause it to produce less oil over time. Thankfully, some light moisturisers are perfect for oily skin. They don’t cause break-outs or extra shine, but they do offer some hydration.
By Ruth Benson IT was announced this week that the Stradivarius Spanish brand will open its first UK store.
Although the chain store is well-known over here, you will find only its most famous brand of Zara in the UK. The group was started in 1975 by Amancio Ortega, a Spanish businessman who decided to expand his factory by opening the first store in La Coruña, and it has become one of Spain’s biggest fashion retailers. The Zara brand continued to grow in the Eighties around Spain, where it now has 335 Zara stores. In 1988 it went international,
opening its first store out of Spain in Portugal. The group then went on to Paris and London, and there are at least 1,763 stores worldwide. As well as Zara and Stradivarius, the group consists of Pull and Bear, Massimo Dutti and Oysho, all of which are fashion brands, catering for different sexes, ages and styles. The Stradivarius brand aims to compete with Primark as it is the more affordable brand aimed at the young market compared with Zara. The fashion is aimed at women aged 20-35 “who are too young to dress like their mothers but too sophisticated to dress like teenyboppers”. The group also has a less-known brand called Lefties, which was started in 1993 as an outlet for last season’s Zara stock. Although there is
not one here in Tenerife, Gran Canaria has a store. And there are plans, according to retail consultant Carlos Hernandez, that the brand will also open stores in the UK. Because of the recession we have seen how businesses have been hit. And retail is no exception, with shops closing all over Spain. Lefties have capitalised on this and opened up in poor areas. According to the Telegraph, with the rise of unemployment, retail sales slumped. But commercial centres with Lefties stores saw a 30% increase of customers, demonstrating a need for low-cost fashion. We know this to be true in the case of Primark and the demand for cheap fashion. So it’s good news that we can still update our wardrobe without having to break the bank.

Ocean Dream restaurant, Los Abrigos
A Food lover’s dream OCEAN DREAM has been marketing itself over the last few weeks as a different kind of dining experience.
It is Mediterranean food with a twist, offering Canarian and Valencian Tapas, made from local organic Canarian produce and served with
only Canarian wines. And I don’t doubt that for one minute. The restaurant, brainchild of Tiby and chef Ximo, is located at the beginning of Los Abrigos. From Las Chafiras, head down into Los Abrigos, take the first right and you will find a large gravel car park. From there, you head along the path and just around the corner you
will see Ocean Dream. The restaurant is in an unassuming street,
and the interior will remind visitors of a minimalist, tropical para-
dise. The décor allows the simplistic beauty of the food to really shine, though beauty isn’t the only thing bringing people here. We were greeted by front-of-house Tiby, and we were bowled over by the stunning Atlantic Ocean view through the huge windows. Los Abrigos really is beautiful at nighttime. As advertised, the wine list consisted of Canarian wines only, and we chose a bottle of red, house wine Tajinaste. It comes from a small family-owned winery in the Valle de la Orotava, on the north side
of Tenerife, and the red is produced from listan black grapes. It had a wonderful, ruby-red colour and a savoury, dark-cherry fruit flavour profile with peppery space and lovely leafy nuances adding freshness and interest to the wine. We had the menu explained to us in detail by the restaurant’s knowledgeable staff. The menu is Mediterranean food, and the speciality tapas are designed to be shared. Alongside the menu there was a range of seasonal specials. But we decided to let Tiby choose for us. She suggested, since we

were enjoying the red wine, that we experience the meat dishes, and we agreed. The first thing to appear were the Croquetas, There were four, served on a black-slate plate and accompanied by red pepper, ali oli and a black truffle sauce. The home-made, organic Chicken Croque-
tas (fish ones are also available) take three hours of mixing by hand to prepare. These were truly remarkable - and so fresh. as you would expect after all that mixing! My partner and I shared the order, as we did throughout the meal. Just as we were finishing the last of the
Croquetas, the Bravas was placed in front of us. Bravas are special Canarian potatoes with traditional Valencian spicy sauce (Brava) ali oli (garlic plus extra virgin oil) plus cayenne & Malden salt (marine salt). Again, with ali oli and the red pepper sauce, which was really smooth and flavoursome, they
had a wonderful afterkick. After our plates were cleared, and after just about the right time, the Cordero/Crema Ajo/ Patata y Verdura Confitada was served. This is a lamb dish which some people would describe as being a bit like a posh Spring Roll, full of the best lamb cuts. But it doesn’t do it justice. The lamb is infused with the freshest vegetables and, unlike a spring roll, it is juicy not greasy. They were served on a bed of home-made mashed potato. I could have eaten these all night! Just as we were getting over the stunning lamb dish, the Paella Valenciana turned up. Now this is the first of two dishes I had never eaten before: rabbit! Before we started eating, we were told that the correct and best way of eating this dish is straight out of the pan
because the bottom is coated with Socarraf, a black, tasty ingredient which you scrape off. The dish consists of organic chicken and rabbit, etc - like all the food served in the restaurant - and it was like a mixture of paella and risotto. It was fresh, colourful and full of flavour, and I really enjoyed it.. To end the meal, we were brought three desserts - Yogur con Frutas, Chocolate y Chocolate con Chocolate and Quesillo Casero. Where to start? Chocolate y Chocolate con Chocolate is chocolate cake, chocolate sponge and chocolate ice cream, which, for chocoholics, is amazing. The Yogur con Frutas is natural yogurt foam, with candied strawberries and smashed, toasted cookies, which was a surprise for me. I have tried yogurt several times, really don’t like it and was not keen to try this. My partner tasted it and said: “You have to try this - you will love it because it really doesn’t taste like yogurt.” She was correct because it was nothing
like a yogurt I had tasted before. It was light, refreshing and, with the strawberries and cookies, absolutely it divine. The last one on our plate was the Quesillo Casero. This is a typical dessert Tiby’s grandmother use to make. It is made with eggs and home-made caramel, slow-cooked in a water bath, topped with ice-cream and mint. Absolutely lovely! All our food was served on black slate - except for the Paella, which we ate out of the pan - and all presented exquisitely. We were then invited to finish our wine downstairs. We were taken down the staircase and into a genuine cave, which is beautifully lit. Here we sat and watched and listened to the ocean crashing on the rocks just below us. Though I would love to be selfish and keep Ocean Dream all to myself, the work chef Ximo and Tiby have created is too good to stay hidden for long. There is no doubt that a table at Ocean Dream will become the hottest reservation out of town.

By Monica Dyson YES, it comes round again … with increasing regularity, doesn’t it? The World Cup that is!
But it will be rather overshadowed this time by the Tour de France, which will be a bit nearer home for those wanting to watch a bit of the action at close quarters. That’s because the first two stages of the 101st Tour travels through my home county of Yorkshire, before going down to Cambridge and London, before returning to France. You are never alone when you’re a sports fan. As soon as one thing finishes, another starts. Once snooker has finished in Sheffield, tennis starts at Wimbledon, with football and rugby seemingly lasting all year. By the time you get

to my age, you get a bit blasé about championships, cup finals and the like. You’ve seen an awful lot of them, And yes, many of them have been awful, especially when England’s been playing. I tend to get a bit confused these days between Football League Cups, FA Cups, Community Shield and Johnstone Paint Trophy Cups, which I think was once called something else! Although, of course, women aren’t supposed to know much about football, are they? In my case, though, I rather like it. Why women get so upset, I can’t imagine. If you can’t beat ’em, join‘’em! Where else do you get to see so many handsome young men in short shorts and tasty? Although they seem to change quite frequently, and some of
the games can be quite exciting, too! Also, if it were not for the “beautiful game”, we would not be able to follow the useless activities of the footballers’ wives, who seem to spend as much time on holiday in Dubai as they do in fashion shops! How exactly did Coleen Rooney acquire the title of Tesco Mum of the Year? I can just see her now, trying to pacify Kai and Klay in the supermarket while deciding what to get our Wayne for his tea! I wonder if she uses her club card? The World Cup that really sticks in my memory and, I suspect of anyone of a certain age, is the one of 1966 for all sorts of reasons. Possibly the main one being that England actually won it! So, do we think there will be many differences between that one and this one - Apart from
the fact that England are unlikely to win this one. Ye of little faith, I can hear you say. And there has been some controversy about the extortionate price of official World Cup football kits. But then, there always has been with the sellers of fake goods doing a roaring trade around the stadiums at any sporting event, or music concert. England is a very different place today from 1966. Communication is much more advanced and it will be possible to view the matches on all sorts of advanced technology, and not just on television screens. Even if you happen to be on holiday, there will be televised coverage showing the matches everywhere - and not just in Benidorm! One of the things people most remember about 1966 is how gripped Britain was by
World Cup fever. On the day of the final, streets were eerily quiet. There was an absolute minimum of traffic and of pedestrians. That soon changed with the final whistle, when you could see people actually running out into the street from their homes, shouting and cheering! That year was memorable, and not just because England won the World Cup for the first and only time. The Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in March that year while on display in London - but luckily found before the final. In April, the term “Swinging London” was used for the first time when it appeared in Time magazine, the Moors murderers were sentenced in May and Barclaycard issued the first credit card in June. The Beatles played their last-ever concert
in August in Candlestick Park in San Francisco, with the tragedy of Aberfan happening in October. In 1966, it was practically unheard of for any self-respecting man to agree to book his wedding during the World Cup, just in case England did do well. In fact there weren’t many men who agreed to it during the football season of any year. Which meant that it was okay to get married in June, July or early August. But only three out of every four years, unless he was really got at by the bride and, more importantly, her mother! Obviously, things have had to change now, with the football season seeming to last all year. But you can still expect to lose most of the male guests and the groom to the bar where the television screen will be! Come on England!

This wild baby needs love WE were called a couple of weeks ago to take care of a sick, semiwild dog in Aldea Blanca.
We have been aware of a pack there for some time, but efforts to catch them have been unsuccessful. This dog, we were told, was so ill, seemingly close to death. We asked vet Yaiza Perez Molindyk to take a look, thinking it would just be a case of putting the poor thing out of his misery. But she took him home and started to treat him. She diagnosed bacterial meningitis. After a week, he was good to go home, but he is less than a year old and has had no human contact. His eventual owner will need to socialise him and spend some
time with him, but we are sure he will make a cracking pet. Could that special owner be you? He is fully-vaccinated, sterilised and chipped, and our usual adoption fee of 110 euros covers eve-
rything. Call Elaine on 678 015 653 to arrange a meeting. Our Sunday bash Have a cracking afternoon out with us at Ye Olde Ocean this Sunday (15th June), from 2pm.
We are planning a benefit which is shaping up well. Jamie Drew will host the afternoon, introducing some great acts. There are magnificent prizes on the raffle, too, as well as an auction.

Ñandu’s can-do kids!
ÑANDU Rugby Club under-16s, based in Adeje, are a group of hard-working, dedicated kids of different nationalities from various schools and areas.
They spend most of their spare time training to improve their game, but there is a major problem: they have no one to play against, except themselves. With this in mind their trainer, Jamie Whelan, has been in touch with the Catalonia Rugby Federation to try to get some assistance. The response was overwhelming with the Club being offered a chance to join their league. This would entail flying to Barcelona to compete on a regular basis. Obviously, this comes at a cost, which the League are trying to assist with by allowing the Ñandu boys to stay overnight and play two days running. But it still leaves a large deficit in the Club’s already empty coffers. Jamie and the boys, far from being daunted, have risen to the challenge and will not stop until they are successful. There are many planned fund-raisers, like car boot sales, raffles and dinners, and, last Saturday (7th
June), a sponsored cycle ride to cover the distance between Tenerife and Barcelona - some 2,000km. This took place with the help of Nexsport Club El Galeón gymnasium, which made available six static bikes, on which they took turns doing 20-minute stints. They started at 8am and, after a lot effort and sweat, they finally hit their target at 2.30pm! A huge thank-you to the Gimnasio support and all the patrons who
gave their support, both moral and financially. The next leg is the ascent of Mount Teide, to take place on Sunday (15th June) when 15 of the boys, along with club representatives and some family supporters, will climb from Montaña Blanca to the summit of Teide, a journey of approximately 17km. Ñandu is more than just a rugby club. There is a strong bond of friendship which feeds from many outside activities, such
as beach days, cinema trips, water-park fun, as well as the more serious homework and studying sessions. Ñandu Under-16s are devoted to their team and have faced this challenge with an enthusiasm we could not have imagined. We are all extremely proud of their commitment and would ask anyone who has any thoughts or ideas of ways to expedite the raising of funds to please let us know. There are also
sponsorship packages available, including publicity for businesses on the new kits. You can follow their progress on www.gofundme. com/rugbynandu or contact Jamie on 635 266 787 or Paul on 664 361 058. Please help the boys get to Barcelona!! Or if you are under-16 and want to
join the club, you are all welcome. Or come along to our End of Season Bash in El Galeon next Friday (20th June).

By Jav SUZUKI have updated their Swift range, adding more standard kit and refreshing engine options.
The Swift has had a number of minor updates, including new tech, a revised engine range and new styling options. The four trim levels - SZ2, SZ3, SZ4 and Sport - have been carried over. But they have also added to the range the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel. This leaves the Euro 5 compliant 94bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine, with Sport models (£13,999£14,499) featuring a 134bhp 1.6-litre unit. For entry-level SZ2 (£10,799) and above, all versions of the compact super-mini have front fog lights and LED, daytime running lights, with the exception of

If you knew Suzuki… Sport models. Also, a Gearshift Indicator (whatever that means) has been fitted across the entire range to aid fuel efficiency, as has a Tyre Pressure Monitor System (TPMS). I love these wonderful descriptions, whatever they mean, and you have to wonder what fantastic salaries the guys who make up these names are on! Range-topping SZ4 (£14,039-£16,439) also benefits from standardfit satellite navigation with DAB radio, and all models aside from the Sport can now be optioned with Amethyst Grey Pearl Metallic paint (another mystery) for £430. Customers in the UK can also pick up a revised Swift model at a reduced price, thanks to Suzuki’s current VAT-free offers, which means prices start from as little as £8,999 for the entry-level model. But if you jump into the Swift Sport expecting the mid-range punch of a modern turbo hot-hatch, you’ll
be disappointed. The Suzuki’s naturally-aspirated petrol needs to be revved beyond 4000rpm before it comes alive - although doing so really is rewarding. It revs smoothly with pleasing engine and exhaust notes up to the limiter, which is where you’ll
find the peak 134bhp. A 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds means the Swift Sport is quickish, although it’s nowhere near as nippy as, say, a Ford Fiesta ST. While it doesn’t have the pace of the some rivals, the Swift is still perfect to drive along
your favourite B-road thanks to its good body control, strong grip and lively chassis. And the agile handling doesn’t come at the expense of an overly-firm ride. In fact, the Sport is remarkably comfortable by hot-hatch standards. The light steering
makes the Sport easy to pilot around town, but the steering weights up predictably through faster bends. Okay, you don’t get the same feedback as you do from a Ford Fiesta ST. But to be fair, Suzuki is a lot cheaper - and good value for money.
Medicine and driving By Emma at Motorworld
MANY medications - even those bought over the counter - have side-effects which can affect our ability to drive correctly.
It makes sense that our reactions can be reduced, and though all medicine which could impair our driving come with a warning on the box, the side-effects range from tiredness to blurred vision, or agitation to sedation. The four degrees are: *Category 0: Does not affect driving capabilities and there are no necessary advisories. *Category 1: Can have potential side-effects. If you suffer from any of those mentioned, do not drive especially during the first few days. The
medication’s effects are equivalent to those of a driver with 0,5 g/l of alcohol in his/her system. *Category 2: Substantially affects the ability to drive. The medications effects are equivalent to that of a driver with 0.5-0.8 g/l of alcohol
in his/her system. *Category 3: Affects the ability to drive. Do not drive. The medications are equivalent to that of a driver with more that 0.8 g/l of alcohol in his/her system. It is made clear that when taking any medi-
cation, you must stick to the instructions supplied with the tablets. Otherwise, you could find yourself being fined merely for taking tablets in order to improve your health. As stated, some pills can provide a reading
equivalent to having been drinking and being above the legal limit. Driving distractions Modern-day cars are being fitted with more gadgets which do, in some cases, become distractions. The items most common are, of
course, telephones and smoking. On a motorway, travelling at the speed limit of 120 km/h, the car is moving at about 34 metres a second. It means that even the smallest distraction could prove fatal. For instance: *Lighting a cigarette would normally take around four seconds. That would, be the equivalent of 136 metres in which your attention has been elsewhere, and thus, distracting your driving concentration. *Changing a radio channel or changing a CD takes around six seconds, equivalent to 272m, which is a vital period. *Dialling a number or answering a telephone call takes around 13 seconds, which equals 442m and can be extremely dangerous. So a lot of what appear to be minimal distractions can, in fact, be the chief reasons for accidents or incidents, which can cause injury or death of an innocent person. Be warned!

Revamp – great value for money By Sue McDonald MANY people are basically happy with the furnishings in their apartments, but sometimes they just need a change.
For example, it could be that the sofa is faded or worn, or that the curtains have suffered with the heat of the sun we are lucky enough to enjoy pretty much all year round. In any case, all is not lost, and you don’t need to spend huge sums of money to bring your property back up to standard. And while you’re at it, why not consider a change of colour scheme as well? The typical apartment years ago here in Tenerife was pine furniture,
and busy floral fabrics. Nowadays, you are more likely to see white furniture, and the soft furnishings in neutrals. People have learned that if you keep the base colour neutral, you can use pops of colour to lift the whole colour scheme without it being a permanent feature. So, for example, if you reupholster your sofa in a beige or blue, you can introduce some bright jewel colours and patterns in the cushions. And if you get tired of them, you can just change them again! Some clients who have called us this week are existing Deco Nuevo customers, and, after 10 years, their apartment was starting to look a bit flat. You would be amazed how different you can make somewhere look with a coat of paint, a change of curtains and a few bright cushions. The final touch can be a picture that picks up the accent colour, and
it looks like you have a totally new house, while only actually spending a few hundred euros in total. We’ve also had contact from some new clients who have bought a repossession apartment without even coming over to see it, and we will install the furniture before they arrive so that they can move straight in. They will have everything they need, right down to kettle and toaster, and sheets and towels. That’s the wonder of the internet, as we are now in constant contact with them, sending emails, photos and videos of the property and our progress as we furnish it! In this particular case, I would definitely go for a neutral background. I will meet these clients for the first time when they come over to move in, so they can choose the finishing touches and accent colours then. Far from leading a leisurely life, Gilly and I are busier than ever, but we are not complaining! The difference is that we can visit clients, or meet them at our warehouse and showroom in Buzanada, instead of being based in the shop. This allows us to offer a more personal service, which the clients seem to like, and also be more competitive on price, both on re-upholstery work and new furniture. So if you are interested in a no-obligation estimate for any type of furniture or refurb, just give us a call on 922 789 729 or email info@ deconuevo.com for info and prices.

THE heavy rains of a few months ago just keep giving, and the wastelands are ablaze with sedums, of all types.
These are the plants people use to create “green roofs” because they live on the water they can glean naturally. If they have an abundant supply of water, they grow really well; hence the dense carpet created around us at the moment. Another plant I spotted growing wild is the Crystalline Ice Plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum). It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, where most of its members are native to Africa. It has fleshy, hairy leaves, and its flowers close when the sun is in - and open when it comes out. The flowers are silvery white and look like sea anemones. They glisten in the sunlight, making quite a statement. The plant has little bladder cells for storing moisture, and the light bounces off them, which gives them the ice-like appearance from which
their common name derives. You can eat the leaves and also the seeds, but I have not tried them especially knowing that lots of dogs like to have a squirt on them - and they look more ornamental than edible. You may have in your garden other ice plants, such as the Heartleaf Ice Plant (Aptenia cordifolia) or “Red Apple”. It is a great plant for ground cover, or even in hanging baskets. It has red flowers, but you can get them in pink, pure-white and mixed colours. They have plants with large leaves and smaller leaves, but they are all the same type of plant. Here’s how to grow and care for your ice plants. Firstly, plant in well-drained soil. Water well until settled, then water occasionally in the summer but rarely in the winter. They enjoy full sun or partial sun, but they will not have many flowers if kept in the shade, and they could also rot. As the plant dies back, cut off the dried-up plant material and new growth will emerge. You can compost the parts you cut off. If using as a groundcover plant in a garden setting, it will inhibit the growth of weeds and is a salt-tolerant plant. So if you live near the coast,
it will not mind one little bit. In the wild, it can inhibit the growth of native plants by rendering the soil useless because it contains high amounts of salt and takes years to decompose. In a garden it can be controlled, so you will not have the same problem because it will rely on you to feed it with unsalted water. To encourage the flowers to grow, remove any dead ones. Don’t let the plant romp around as it pleases. Contain its growth so that it has energy for lots of flower production. To propagate: Take cuttings from well-established plants and let them root in water in a light, but nottoo-hot, window. Then plant out into desired space. They do self-propagate but, when I cut off lengths of good plant material as I control the plant, I like to try to create another plant from this before putting the rest in the compost bin. They will give you months of flowers and are hardy and robust enough to withstand high winds or calimas. They are economical to buy and good allrounders and they also encourage butterflies to your garden, which I love!

Right on the money!
By Roscoe Sporting Gijon 3 CD Tenerife 0 DOING this job, it’s easy to get a bit of stick, and I’ve no problem with that. Football should be all about opinions. And, of course, it’s nice to be right!
A week ago, this column predicted how nervy Las Palmas would have it against Ponferradina, and the Gran Canarians had to fight back late on from 2-1 down to win 3-2. I tipped Cordoba to hang on to make the play-offs and also got the relegation matters right. On Girona I wrote: “And what of Girona, playoff finalists last season and 90 mins away from relegation 12 months on? They are another team to find their form late on, just one loss in six. They have a fine attack and in a funny way, they may have got lucky this weekend. They host already promoted Deportivo who could win the title. But these things are not so important in Spain.” Position
Girona comfortably won 3-1 and stayed up! And at the time of writing the piece, Mirandes were 10-1 to go down. Big odds, but not a surprise to Canarian Weekly readers: “....Which leaves the final struggler Mirandes. They have not been in the bottom four all season, but they are fading fast. One win in eight has pushed them into trouble and they travel to a Lugo side who have a farewell
match for manager Quique Seiten. He is off to pastures new after five brilliant seasons, with Real Betis and Las Palmas both interested. Does he have one more win in him, one that sends Mirandes down?” The answer was Yes, and Mirandes fans are still crying their hearts out. CD Tenerife got the expected thumping at Sporting Gijon, and failed to score for a club record eighth time.

At least they didn’t lose 1-0! Tenerife haven’t scored since 20th April, and the lack of goals will need to be addressed next season. This is priority No.1 for new director of football Alfonso Serrano. I say new, but he was in the position a few years ago until he left in 2008. His departure then was seen as necessary, so it’s a surprise to see him back. Interestingly, he will work under Alvaro Cervera, and between them indentify transfer targets for Serrano to sign. It’s understood that there will at least eight new faces, and some of the B team lads will be given their chance in pre-season. Serrano had a mixed time during his last stint at the Heliodoro. He joined in the summer of 2006 and remodelled the whole squad. He had some success stories. The signings of Nino, Pablo Sicilia, Marc Betran and, to a lesser extent, Jose Culebras and Manolo Martinez, were outstanding - and he also gave Jose Luis Oltra the manager’s job. But there were some very expensive and frustrating highprofile disasters. Sylvain N’Diaye never tried from the first
time he pulled on the jersey. The Senegal international had played in the World Cup only a few years earlier. Tomas Frankowski was a disaster on-loan from Wolves, while few will remember Andres San Martin. He came from River Plate with a big reputation and wage bill. He was given the captain’s armband, and was then kicked out after Christmas 2006. And then there is a man we will always remember as El Burro. Raul Sanchez had graced Almeria, Salamanca and Castellon before he pitched up as our big hope up front. Seven goals, and a mountain of abuse later, he was farmed out to Alaves, never to be seen again. Serrano has been busy since he left Santa Cruz. He had a successful time at Malaga, before working his way through spells at Valencia, Numancia, Valladolid and Recreativo. At a press conference this week, he said he knew what needed to be done, adding: “It’s great to return here as it’s a brilliant club. I’m a little older and wiser now! We want 7-10 signings, and we know where we need to improve.
“The first thing I want to do is get Suso under contract and also get Vitolo. We know what we have to do.” Both of those men would be key to the project. The re-signing of captain Suso goes without question, while bringing back legend Vitolo would be a real statement. The man who has a massive CD Tenerife logo inked to his calf has made no secret of his desire to come home. Tenerife are also looking for two centrebacks, and the search was not helped by the departure this week of Bruno, who looks set to join La Liga Elche. The play-offs for La Liga are underway, and there were two cagey first legs on Wednesday. Cordoba had the better chances but were held to a draw by Real Murcia, who should go on to the final. It was just as edgy in Gran Canaria, where barely 12,000 turned up and saw Las Palmas beat Sporting Gijon 1-0. Both sides kept it tight, and it’s worth remembering that away goals do not count double. There is little to choose between the sides, and Sunday’s second leg will be watertight. Finally, striker Ayoze has been unveilled by Newcastle.

It’s tough at the top! YOU will be fine in the Premier League, they said. It’s not that tough, they said.
A swift glance at last Friday’s results, however, will have made some people wince a little. Five 7-1 wins and a whitewash! That came at Inkspots as Bar 180 A won every single leg,
and Tom and Wayne hit maximums. There were also maximums for Phoenix Bar’s Bubbles and Mitch, Steve (Target Army), Bryn (Target Titans) and Alan (Vikings Ensecan). It’s nothing to be scared of, really! Having dropped down a tier, Gaffers A are scaring people in Division 1. And to avoid any puns, I can
say that Picasso’s were whitewashed (groan). Of course, you can use the Harry Booze pronunciation for Picasso’s if you wish! The Playboys are not doing as well as some predicted, although they will be happier after beating Pas O Nadas 5-3. The Comeback of the Week award goes to Emerald Lounge. At 4-1 down to Naughty

Nautas, they looked to be in big trouble. Not so. They stormed back for a hard-fought draw, and a special mention to debutant Brian, who checked out on 87 in his first match for Nauta. With Chipeque Chippers getting married, it was down to the chasing pack to try to close the already-widening gap at the top of Division 2.
The Waterfall boys did their bit by beating Marilyns 5-3. And we can now declare that Elvis is not dead. He can’t be because. he hit his second 180 of the season. That’s The Wonder Of You, Dave! The Bar are going steady in their first season, brushing aside Palms Sports Bar coolly, and that 6-2 result was matched
by The Rebels as they beat the Hunters. The Palms also hit a six with a fine performance against Phoenix Flights. And, for the first time since records began, Ourplace Playgirls are not bottom! The three points they won at Amistad 2 rocketed them up the table to … second-from-bottom, albeit alphabetically! Well done girls!

Scallywaggs Rule over Britannia The fifth annual charity battle between The Scallywags and Britannia Golf Society finally saw bragging rights changing hands! The Scally Waggs have been trying to beat the Britannia boys for four years and finally they succeeded.
Los Lagos Adeje hosted the first day of the two day event and Scally Waggs whitewashed Britannia 6-0. The Individual Winner was Dave Cheetham who also
claimed the nearest the pin award. It was Adeje Golf course the following day and Scally Waggs eased home 31 to take the spoils. The Individual Winner at Adeje was Paul Murter with Tom Pogson nearest the pin. A special thanks to all the golfers and everyone who donated prizes for the raffle. Also a thank you to the Lions from San Miguel De Abona, Arona, Las Galletas and Costa Del Silencio. At the end of the day 2400 euros was raised and the money is going to Carol Salisbury who is fund raising to buy a bus for cancer patients who require transport to Candelaria Hospital in Santa Cruz, for their treatment.

Happy Hammers are champs CONGRATULATIONS to Tenerife Hammers A, who have retained their title and are again Division One champions.
They have been head and shoulders above everyone for a while now, and on Tuesday they finally sealed the deal with a routine win over Treehouse A. They will now be focused on adding the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup to their honours. While it’s tough at the top, it’s positively rough at the bottom as we enter the final week of the Direct Telecom Pool League. Toscales A have already been relegated and suffered defeat against Dreamers A, who are still chasing a fourth-place finish. But who will join them? Two teams go down and, as the table stands, it is still mathematically possible for
Terrace Bar A, Hammers C or Treehouse A to also be relegated to Division Two. The bookies’ favourite are Tenerife Hammers C, who, despite putting up an early fight against Palms A, came unstuck. They were 2-0 and 4-2 up before Heineken and Roscoe completed hat-tricks. It’s the first time Hammers C have been in the drop-zone all season! Terrace Bar A also started well against Exiles A before another collapse in the middle four games. That loss means they are only a point better off than Hammers C, so they just need to match their result. Hammers C travel to Dreamers A, while the Suicide Squad have Gaffers A! If they both win, then Treehouse A could get sucked in. But they shouldn’t be too distracted because they have two games in hand and will be confident of

getting a least a point from one of them, which will seal their safety. Peacocks were also flirting with relegation, but they played twice this week, losing first to Phoenix Knights who have comfort-
ably finished third, but then getting a fine win against Exiles A. They are safe. In this week’s remaining games Inn the Pink A, who could still finish fourth, took on Phoenix Potters, and a solid performance saw them take

They face Palms A in a rare Saturday afternoon match tomorrow, at 4pm. Well done to Palms B, who will be playing top-flight pool next season! The title race in Division Two has been keenly fought all season, but now looks as good as over. Palms B won an earlystart match with Hoppys Bar and then, an hour later, biffed archrivals Inn the Pink B to secure promotion and, surely, the title. Pink could only get a draw against Bluebell B beforehand, and they will now just focus on getting the points to go up. The race for third and fourth spot was also similar in style, James Place in third and Exiles B,fourth, played each other on Monday, with Exiles using home
advantage to take the win. Exiles B then handed out a spanking to Treehouse B, while James Place just managed to sneak past Terrace Bar B. There is now just a point between them with still all to play for. Kandi 13 have put in a late charge and could still finish in the top five, dependent on results elsewhere, and they were comfortable winners over 2JZ’s. Bluebell A should be happy with a top-10 finish as they defeated Toscales B. Tenerife Pool Tables had two games this week and will be disappointed they didn’t take more points. They shared the spoils with bottom-place Dreamers B and were then beaten by Next Door, the team a place above them in the league. But Harley is surely a shoo-in for junior player of the season!
