Starco: The truth THE Tenerife rumour mill has been working overtime this week following the closure of Starco Commercial centre ahead of the busiest night of the year.

Thousands of holidaymakers were disappointed, hundreds of workers were hit in the pocket and bar-owners were left furious with the closing of the centre at 530pm last Thursday, just hours before England played Uruguay. Starco has been closed ever since, but, as we go to press on Thursday evening, there are strong indications that the area could be reopened this weekend. Canarian Weekly has been following the story since the closure, and we have spoken with all the major players first hand. Claims and counterclaims remain, but it seems the closure was carried out with the best of intentions. And while companies have been hit hard this week, it will, hopefully, be business as usual in the next few hours. Starco was designed in early 1984 and building work began in the Autumn. At the time, it was seen as an ambitious project during the early years of tourism in Las Americas. Work took 18 months and in the summer of 1986, there was a plethora of new bars, clubs

and eating outlets. Older readers may remember some that were popular in the late Eighties and early Nineties: bars and clubs such as Soul Train, Gigolos, Raw Rock, Ambassador, Pelinor, and those that remain like Linekers, Tramps and Rags. Newer venues like Mett Bar and Braningans have added to the area’s popularity over the years. But nothing ever really runs smoothly with commercial centres, and since 2004 there have been some problems. Starco was closed for a couple of months at the start of 2004 in an attempt to solved some sewage and water issues, and this week’s problem can actually be traced back to a decade ago. The repair work undertaken is now seen as “putting a sticking plaster over a cut”, rather than a long-term solu-

tion. In 2014, Starco is a complex business centre. Long-standing rows mean that there are two separate “Communities”, and this leads to more than a few logistical problems. One community (which we shall call “Community 1” for the purpose of this piece) owns 51% of Starco and discovered a problem last month. They noticed that there was a lot of water coming into the basement and thought, instantly, that it might be a major problem. We spoke with a C1 representative. Community 1: “Since 2004 there have been some problems and, in fact, there were problems before which were not part of the structure. There were some problems with the water and also the sewage, and there were always leaks. In 2004, repairs took place af-

ter we closed for a few months.” Canarian Weekly: “These repairs may have solved the problem then, but they have not solved it long-term. The water has got into the building and into the supports. This has made them weak and brittle?” C1: “We think so.” They called in a technician, who did a structural report on the centre. They recorded video footage of some of this report - footage which has been seen by Canarian Weekly. It shows what appears to be brittle cement on a main support. The technician lightly scrapes at the support and the cement crumbles with no effort. It’s best described as what happens when you brush a spoon on a dry meringue. Shocked by their findings, Community 1 went to the Arona Town Hall on Wednesday, 11th June, and over the next few days the police, or some representative from the Council, checked Starco over. On the morning of Monday, 16th June, the police travelled

to Starco to close the building on safety grounds. When they arrived, they met with members of the communities and discussed the situation, along with the Mayor. Since there was no official documentation to implement the closure, a stay was granted. During this time, it is understood that Arona Mayor Francisco Niño met with various “owners” to try to find a workable solution. Then something changed. It seems as though there was correspondence between the Town Hall, the checking inspector and the police. Somebody with the authority must have looked again at the report and said there was a danger. On Thursday, 19th June, at 530pm, police moved in to Starco with the intention of closing the commercial centre. Again, documentation required to implement a compulsory closure was not in place, so the police politely asked the bars and clubs to close voluntarily. This was hard for the bar-owners to swallow as England’s second World Cup match with Uruguay kicked off at 8pm - and it was going to be the busiest night of the year. Many thought the timing was malicious, even suggesting it was done out of spite for Spain going out of the World Cup the previous evening. As it transpires, it was carried out to prevent mass crowds watching the football. We understand that the report sent to the Town Hall pointed out the risks that vibrations and a mass volume of people could have to the main structure.

It is not the biggest leap to imagine that somebody realised how busy Starco would be for the England game and erred on the side of caution. Controversially, police did allow the fast-food outlets and Dial Prix supermarket to stay open on Thursday night, since they would be sparsely populated and wouldn’t produce any vibrations. On Friday, an official closing order was given at Arona Town Hall and they sent their own inspectors to compile a report on the situation. It is understood that their findings differed from the initial report. They suggested that little “tell tale signs” were not evident. For example, if a structure is “stressed”, there would be obvious cracks or breakage of glass. The building would have a slight sag or list. Nothing was discovered but, crucially, the technicians were unable to gain access to the key areas at the basement of the building This new information gave “owners” some cheer over the weekend and, on Tuesday there was more positive news. The town’s technicians were able to enter the previously unseen area. We understand that while they found signs that some repairs were necessary, they found no reason to believe that there was any immediate danger of structural failure or collapse. On Wednesday, they made their findings known to Councillor Carmelo Garcia Martin (pictured), who is charge of such matters, and also the Mayor. He told us: “We already knew about Starco as continued on page 4.

Starco open Friday? continued from page 3. it’s a rather old structure, that nothing is perfect. But we also knew that it was not a danger. “So when we got this report, and it’s not the first time we have been presented with a report, we knew what was happening. “We are satisfied, after police and experts did checks, that it was not going to fall down. Of course, nobody has ever been hurt from any problems with the commercial centre. “The Town Hall has been on top of this for years. This second report was not a private one but our own report. Our inspectors found that the building is not going to fall down although, Yes, there are some bits that need to be put right.” Nobody has ever denied that the centre needs a bit of work doing to it, and that is to be expected after 30 years of heavy useage. It seems that Arona Town Call is satisfied

that Starco can reopen, and this could even happen today (Friday). As we went to print Carmelo spoke with Canarian Weekly. Snr Martin: “Today, our technicians are making some final checks on the Starco area. They will make a report afterwards and on Friday, I will be able to make a final decision.” CW: “Once you have the report, will you have to wait a few days or a period of time before you can lift the suspension?” Snr Martin: “No. I will make that order instantly.” A representative from what we will call “Community 2” told us: “The community of Centro Commercial Starco were made aware of claims that Starco was in a state of disrepair after claims were made by a private paidfor report by a member of the “owners” of Starco. “After the Town Hall had opportunity and access to inspect the building, we have real-

ised that the report was not entirely true, and we are now finding ways to resolve the problem for the future. “This community of owners would like to take this opportunity to thank the Arona Town Hall and the police for their continued support and understanding that, if there are any health and safety issues, these are resolved ahead of any financial gains. The sooner the problem is resolved, the better.” The Starco closure issue has far-reaching effects for our commu-

nity. Closures of popular nightclubs and areas have had a damaging effect on Las Americas in the past. In 1994, half of Veronicas was closed for six months, and things have never been the same. It would not be a stretch to suggest that 50% of the “nightclub” trade was lost the following year. One bar-owner told us: “It’s in the interests of all owners to make sure that any improvements are made as it makes your business look and work better. “We must all say, ‘if

any repairs need to be made, then let’s do it’, and if we have a democratic vote and everyone decides that they want to make future improvements, then let’s do it as it’s not in anyone interests for us to be closed. “Everyone wants the building to be right and, if repairs need to be done, let’s get it done and have everything looking nice as soon as possible.” He added: “I remember the closures that have happened before in Veronicas and Starco. I believe that it can take 3-4 years to get trade

back to where it was. “If we were closed now for any period of time, you would have holiday-makers going back home saying, ‘We are not going back there all the nightclubs and bars are closed’. So it will have a knock-on effect as people will then go elsewhere. “Tenerife has got lots to offer, almost more than anywhere I can think of. You come here as a 5-star client and stay in the Bahia del Duque, the Sheraton or in Fañabe. “You can come here as a young family with children and rent an apartment in, say, Los Cristianos and have value-for-money meals. Or you can come here as a young person with boyfriends and girlfriends and enjoy a party atmosphere. “We have all-yearround sun and great facilities, and it’s in everyone’s interests to be able to offer ourselves to all these people. “And Starco plays a big part in that!”

Supreme Court gives Safety sea wall go-ahead for oil hunt IS still in limbo THE Supreme Court, despite seven petitions to halt the search for oil off the Canary Islands, has given the go-ahead.

In doing so, the Madrid Court confirmed the validity of the 2012 Royal Decree, which approved permits pertaining to oil-prospecting in this area. Over 200,000 people from 183 countries signed an online petition to protest against the drilling, and support has already been given by Greenpeace and other environmental groups, who will attend any protest events. The news was received badly by the Canarian Government, the relative Cabildos and a number of NGOs, including Ecologists in Action, the César Manrique Foundation, the WWF and others. Canary Islands President Paulino Rivero, who was touring the US

when the news broke, said: “Although we have lost this battle, the war is far from over.” Mario Cabrera, Fuerteventura Cabildo President, described the verdict as “very bad, catastrophic,” adding: “This Supreme Court decision will serve to fill us with more rage, and will strengthen and increase our struggle.” Pedro San Ginés, his Lanzarote counterpart, said: “The Supreme Court did not protect the fundamental rights of Canary Island citizens.” He added that two of the Justices on the panel voted against the drilling proposal. That, he believes, means there could be arguments within the Supreme Court, which could throw doubt on the “favourable” opinion. Ricardo Aguilar, European director of worldwide ocean conservation organisation Oceana, said the drilling would “help to destroy” 25 protected marine

areas and 82 species. The uniqueness of the eco-systems in the Canaries sustains several species which are “key” to the fisheries in the area. Aguilar added: “It is unconscionable to destroy these habitats in just a few years to extract a finite and highly-polluting energy source.” Manuel Fumero, Tenerife PSOE president, predicts that the ruling will be a “true environmental chaos which could endanger democracy”. Meanwhile David Abril, MES party deputy in the Balearic Islands, called the judgment “very bad news for the Balearic Islands”. He added: “If the Supreme Court thinks that’s the law, then change it.” More drilling tests are proposed for Balearic Island waters, and the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Canary Islands could signal the same backlash from the Balearics.

THE vital San Andrés sea wall, which acts as a dam, will be constructed “immediately” - whenever that may be! Public Works Minister Ana Pastor told the Senate on Monday that the department would do everything in its power to declare the San Andrés wall an “emergency”. Pastor was responding to a question from socialist senator José Vicente González Bethencourt, who demanded the Minister give a “clear and definitive answer” on how and when the dam will be built. The State had previously given pledges that the project would go ahead in 2014 and 2015, with a budget of just over 1.25m euros. Pastor confirmed the

information, saying the sea wall was vital to prevent periodic flooding in the coastal village, near Santa Cruz. But this wasn’t enough for Bethencourt, who again demanded a starting date for the works. Pastor stressed that the dam would be built “immediately”, but declined to specify a date, despite mentioning the Government’s “commitment to the people of Tenerife”. Draft proposals were submitted for approval, along with detailed technical and environmental studies, by 7th May. They were then open for public consultation on 31st May and approved on 14th June. Funding has been granted from the na-

tional and regional Port Authorities, as well as European cash, so Bathencourt sees no reason why the work cannot start “immediately”, as Pastor stated. But she retaliated, saying that Bethencourt failed to show such “vehemence” in defence of the very same project during the eight years in which he represented the Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in Madrid. She added that he “did nothing” to protect the coast. The PSOE intends to push the Ministry to begin work as a matter of urgency. Santa Cruz Town Planning officer José Ángel Martín called Pastor’s response “disappointing, vague, and full of goodwill, just the same as a year ago when she said she would declare an emergency. We are still waiting.” So, plenty more words but still an apparent lack of action. Meanwhile San Andrés residents are dreading the next heavy rainfall. Again!

FORMER News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones.

But another of Rupert Murdoch’s ex-newspaper chiefs, Rebekah Brooks, who was also Coulson’s lover, was unanimously cleared of all charges at London’s Old Bailey court after the eight-month trial. Coulson, who went on to become Prime Minister David Cameron’s Downing Street communications chief, faces a prison sentence. Brooks was overcome by emotion in the courtroom as the verdicts were read out. She left the Old Bailey accompanied by her husband, Charlie Brooks, but did not stop to speak to the waiting media. The verdicts came three years after it was revealed that journalists on the now-defunct News of the World hacked the phone of then-missing teenager Milly Dowler in 2002. It raised hopes that she was alive and checking messages, when she had actually been murdered. The resulting public and political outrage led to the closure of the 168-year-old paper and the setting up of a public inquiry to examine journalistic ethics. At the time the schoolgirl’s voice mail was intercepted, Brooks was editor of Britain’s top-selling News of the World, and Coulson was her deputy. After Coulson succeeded her as editor, Brooks edited The Sun newspaper, and she later became chief executive of the parent company, News International. Coulson resigned as News of the World editor in 2007 after its then-royal editor, Clive Goodman, and a private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, were jailed for hacking into voice-mail messages left for royal aides. Coulson denied any wrong-doing and later became Cameron’s director of communications. But the former editor resigned from his Downing Street position in 2011 as coverage of the phone-hacking scandal broadened. Cameron, who has faced criticism for hiring Coulson - before and

Phone-hacking scandal: Coulson guilty, but his former lover is cleared

after the event - gave what he called a “full and frank apology” in a media statement, saying he took “full responsibility” for his former aide’s recruitment. The Prime Minister said he had decided to give the former editor “a second chance” on the basis of promises Coulson had given that he did not know about phone-hacking. “I am extremely sorry that I employed him,” said Cameron. “It was the wrong decision, and I am very clear about that.” He added that there had been no complaints about the work Coulson did for him, either at Downing Street or beforehand when Cameron was leader of the opposition. He also defended his own conduct before MPs. Matthew Ashton, an expert in politics and the media at Nottingham Trent University, said: “Coulson’s guilty verdict on the charge of conspiring to hack phones raises important questions about David Cameron’s judgment in employing him. “In particular, what warnings did he receive beforehand, and how rigorous was the vetting and interview process? “Regardless of the verdicts, this trial has raised important ques-

tions about the relationship between the political, economic and media elites in the UK.” Brooks resigned as News International CEO in July 2011 amid public anger over hacking allegations, and police arrested her the following week. Brooks and Coulson were charged in 2012, together with five other journalists, with conspiracy to intercept the voice-mails of high-profile figures in Britain. All seven denied wrongdoing. Brooks also faced, along with her husband and her former personal assistant, Cheryl Carter, two charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. All three were cleared of those charges. And retired managing editor Stuart Kuttner was cleared of conspiracy to hack phones. News UK, the UK newspaper publishing arm of Murdoch’s News Corp., said in a statement: “We said long ago, and repeat today, that wrong-doing occurred, and we apologised for it. We have been paying compensation to those affected and have cooperated with investigations.” The publisher said it was making changes to ensure this kind of wrong-doing did not

recur, and that it supported a new UK press watchdog, which is expected to start work later this year. The statement added: “Out of respect for the fact that further legal proceedings will occur, we will have no further comment at this time.” During the trial, the jury heard how a private detective working for the tabloid was alleged to have made more than 6,000 hacking calls in a two-year period. The Metropolitan Police estimate there were more than 1,000 victims, including royalty, politicians and celebrities. The phone of Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William, was hacked 155 times, it was revealed at the trial. In November, prosecutors alleged that Coulson had a clandestine affair with Brooks from 1998-2004, which, they argued, showed the pair’s level of trust. Referring to a letter she had written to Coulson, which was produced in court, Brooks said: “Andy and I were incredibly close at the time. He was my best friend. I think that comes across.” She denied there had been a long-standing affair, but acknowledged there had been periods

of physical intimacy. The BBC and Guardian newspaper reported that when Coulson testified in April - with his wife watching from the public gallery - he said the affair “shouldn’t have happened.” But he denied that it meant he and Brooks had shared sensitive stories. In her defence, Brooks denied in court that she had ever approved phone-hacking while she was News of the World editor. When asked about the practice, Brooks said: “No desk editor, no journalist ever came to me and said: “We’re working on such and such story, and we need to access their voice mails.’” She told the court she would have felt it was “a serious breach of somebody’s privacy, especially if you did not have an overwhelming public interest,” and of the newspaper industry’s code of conduct. The Old Bailey jury is considering more charges against Andy Coulson as the PM faces questions about why he was appointed to a No 10 role. Meanwhile, the Guardian says police are to interview Rupert Murdoch. Metropolitan Police officers investigating the possibility of a corporate charge against News International now known as News UK - first contacted the media magnate last year. But agreed to wait until the end of the hacking trial, reports the Guardian. Coulson’s conviction comes after five other people pleaded guilty to their involvement in phone-hacking before this trial started last October. Goodman and Mulcaire have already served jail terms, in 2007, for hacking the phones of members of the royal household. Royals, celebrities and victims of crime had their phones hacked by the now-defunct News

of the World, which was closed in July 2011 after revelations about Milly Dowler’s voice-mails being accessed came to light. Coulson, who faces a maximum of two years in prison for hacking, and Mrs Brooks were among seven defendants on trial. Victims of hacking have reacted to the verdicts, with Milly Dowler’s sister, Gemma, speaking about “serious crimes being committed on a major scale in parts of the press”. She added: “Ordinary people have suffered terribly from journalists who recklessly intruded into private grief and stole private information. “And now, those same newspaper groups who let us down so badly before have set up another meaningless regulator called Ipso. “This is just the newspapers looking after themselves. Something needs to be done to make sure what happened to my family doesn’t happen again.” Gemma also spoke out about the “incestuous relationship between our top politicians and the press”. And she called on the Prime Minister to fulfil the promises he made to her family about press regulation. Sienna Miller told ITV that while the whole matter makes her feel “incredibly angry”, she feels “like justice is being done”. Broadcaster Ulrika Jonsson, whose phone was hacked, said she felt “physically sick” at the personal information obtained by the hacker. She told BBC Newsnight: “It was a horrible experience and just quite scary.” And former Home Secretary David Blunkett told the BBC that revelations about his private life reported in the News of the World almost caused him to have a nervous breakdown.

Tough on new King as his sister faces her tax-fraud trial

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

I JUST CAN’T STOMACH SICK SUAREZ

LUIS SUAREZ, what have you done? Some people just don’t get it. “You couldn’t have seen it because nothing happened. The worst of everything is the attitude of Chiellini. As a man, he disappointed me totally.” The wise words of Uruguay’s captain Diego Lugano. It reminded me of an old football journalist’s gag. “I asked Arsene Wenger about the incident but he said he didn’t see it.” If you don’t follow football, you won’t know that Wenger, famously, never sees anything when his team does wrong. The sports industry is full of people who are happy to claim amnesia or blame the victim. What about Uruguay Football Association President Wilmar Valdez: “I have seen more aggressive incidents recently. It is a severe punishment. I don’t know exactly which arguments they used, but it is a tough punishment for Suarez.” Really? A paltry nine-match international ban and a four-month suspension from world football. Sounds like a slap on

the wrist to me, especially since he will probably now go and have the knee operation he has been putting off. And apparently, it’s all our fault - the pesky British media mafia. “The British media is very bad to Luis Suarez. Bad. Bad. Bad, You attack, attack, attack. You don’t see the goals, only bad things.” said Leonardo Goyen Sena, from La Tribune newspaper. And what about Didier Bernardoni Muller? He wrote in El Guichonese: “You don’t want to talk about the game, an important win for Uruguay.” One-eyed muppets. It’s the journalists’ responsibility to tell the story, and not ignore something heinous because we are meant to be star-struck. I would have had no problem with Suarez being given a lifetime ban. It’s the third time he has bitten someone, and he has long since used up any second chances, or natural goodwill. Believe me, youth coaches are going to have a hard time as a result of Suarez’s latest lunch.

SPAIN’S new king has hardly been on the throne five minutes when he finds his family embroiled in a serious court case - not of his own making!

A judge has formalised charges against King Felipe’s sister, Princess Cristina, in a tax fraud and money-laundering case. The princess, 49, was questioned in court in February about the business dealings of her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, and could now face trial. However, an appeal has been lodged against the decision. The judge’s ruling will come as an embarrassment to King Felipe VI, who came to the throne just a week ago. The tax fraud case was one of several scandals which weakened the popularity of the Spanish monarchy - and prompted the abdication of King Juan Carlos. Princess Cristina’s appearance in court in Mallorca was unprecedented for the royal family. And if she goes to trial, she could face up to 11 years in jail. She was noticeably absent from Felipe’s proclamation as king. And the judge’s decision is a major development in this investigation - and a huge embarrassment for the Spanish royal family. Judge Jose Castro believes the princess knew more than she has let on regarding the allegedly corrupt activities of her husband. The inquiry has now lasted more than three years and has heavily eroded the royal family’s

popularity. The Princess has already appeared in court to testify, but she now faces the possibility of a fullblown trial, which would take the scandal to a new level. Of the many challenges Prince Felipe faces as the new monarch, this is surely the least welcome. Judge Castro has been investigating allegations that the Princess’s husband embezzled millions in public funds with a former business partner. Mr Urdangarin, who is the Duke of Palma, and Diego Torres, were alleged to have received 5.6m euros (£4.6m) by overcharging regional governments for organising sporting events as part of a not-for-profit organisation called Noos. Money from Noos was allegedly channelled

into a company called Aizoon, which the duke had set up with his wife. It was then, allegedly, used to pay for work on the couple’s Barcelona mansion, luxury trips and dance lessons. Judge Castro, announcing his decision, said the Princess should be tried alongside her husband and other suspects. Princess Cristina told the investigating judge in February that she had no knowledge of her company’s activities. “The crimes against the public purse that Inaki Urdangarin, allegedly, committed would have been hard to commit without at least the knowledge and acquiescence of his wife,” added the Judge. As co-owner of Aizoon, she is suspected of cooperating in tax fraud and money-laundering, although she told the

judge in February she had no knowledge of the company’s activities and simply trusted her husband. Anti-corruption prosecutors had already opposed his decision to name Cristina as a suspect, saying there was insufficient evidence against her. Prosecutor Pedro Horrach said on Wednesday that an appeal was being lodged “because there is still no piece of evidence against the Princess”. The next step will involve prosecutors and defendants putting forward their case before Judge Castro, Palma de Mallorca’s investigating judge, who will then decide what charges to recommend. A final decision on whether she should stand trial will be made by the provincial court in Palma, Mallorca.

Siam Park

reaps its rewards Foreign tourism hits the heights again last month THE Canary Islands led the field for foreign tourism growth in May with a big improvement on last year’s figures.

SIAM PARK is starting its summer season with four important awards concerning efficiency, excellence, responsibility and motivation.

The Biosphere Park certifies its environmental commitment and support to the tourism destination. This award was announced by the Institute for Responsible Tourism (ITR), affiliated to UNESCO, which grants

this quality seal to the best places to visit in the world, according to the ratings and the highest standards of sustainability and respect for the environment. In addition to this important accolade, Siam Park is also certified with the ISO 9000; ISO 14.000 and EMAS certifications, absolute proof of its real commitment to the highest quality in the tourism industry. These awards are based on the efficiency of the enterprise, the excellence of its facilities and its responsible attitude, through which

it influences and motivates the visitors to get involved in the care of the destination. Siam Park also fulfils a fundamental premise of the biosphere parks: to ensure the exercise of the important role of conservation of biodiversity and, in this case, the welfare of the animals such as sharks, sea lions and tropical fishes which live there. These four awards are in addition to other honours obtained by Siam Park, and that throughout nearly six years of existence, it has established itself as a

leading park, and revolutionary in the field of theme parks with water attractions. The water park has also received the “Travellers Choice Award” from Trip Advisor as the best water park in the universe. Siam Park was inaugurated in 2008 by the Princess of Thailand, Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and is part of the company Loro Parque, whose seal of quality and excellence has been recognised on numerous occasions throughout its 42 years of existence.

Data from Monday’s Survey of Tourist Movements in Frontera (Frontur), showed that the islands received 776,717 international visitors, up 12.9% on the same period last year. This increase was the biggest recorded for the whole of Spain, bringing the total number of foreign visitors for the year to 4.8 million - up 13.1% on the first five months of 2013. In absolute terms, however, the Islands were pipped to the post by Catalonia, which recorded up 5.4 million an 8% increase. The Canaries’ foreign arrivals accounted for 12.7% of all visitors to Spanish territory in the month, led by British, German and French holiday-makers. But the end of the Scandinavian season resulted in a 15.2% drop. Spain received 6.1 million international tour-

ists during May, corresponding to an increase of 5.7% on 2013. The UK market accounted for the highest growth, with 118,000 more arrivals than last year (up 7.5%). So far this year, Spain has welcomed a total of 21.4 million foreign visitors, which reflects an increase of 8.2% on the same period last year. Almost all countries of origin saw improvements, but particularly the UK and France, adding more than 300,000 to their 2013 tally for the first five months. And all major tourist destinations, except the Balearic Islands, posted increases. Of all visitors, 69.8% opted for hotel stays, up 10.7% on last May. But the number of visitors opting for other forms of accommodation fell by 4.4%. Those opting for package holidays (flights and accommodation booked together), showed a marked increase of 22.7%, compared with the 1-2% of those visitors who decided to book flights and accommodation separately.

Baywatch comes to Tenerife! SANTA Cruz Local Police launched their own Baywatchstyle, beach campaign on Saturday.

A 20-strong team of officers will patrol las Teresitas beach, to the north of the Island’s capital, until 14th September 14th. The aim is to strengthen surveillance and improve safety and security during the summer

months, when thousands of sunbathers flock daily to the golden sands. José Alberto DiazEstébanez, Councillor for Public Safety and Mobility, said: “I can’t stress enough the importance of an annual service that has become extremely useful for users of the beach. “The mere presence of agents offers a remarkable sense of security, as well as being a resource of information and firsthand help.”

Diaz-Estébanez appealed to citizens to respect the basic rules for the use and care of the beach, asking them “to avoid behaviour that may cause risk”. The beach patrol will be supported by plainclothes Unipol members, who will keep an eye on traffic - entry to and exit from the beach - with assistance from the summer Task Groups. From early morning until nightfall, at least six officers will perform beach duty, carrying out tours and inspections of the bathroom areas, and surveillance of parking spaces. They will also enforce municipal regulations regarding animals on the beach, illegal trading, access for boats, and protecting the rights of the beach users.

Penelope Cruz on screen in Tenerife PENE L O PE CRUZ, the Oscarwinning actress, has been in Tenerife for a few days, filming MaMa, which will be released later this year.

It is written and directed by Julio Medem, well-known in Spanish film circles for works such as Lucia and Sex, Chaotic Ana and Room in Rome. Tenerife-based production company Plató del Atlántico is involved in the film, under the direction of Lucas Fernández. Scenes have been shot at University Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (HUNSC) better known as Candelaria Hospital. In the finished prod-

uct, you will probably see parts of the main building’s sixth floor, as well as the newly-renovated reception area and some of the hospital grounds.

The film also stars Luis Tosar and Asier Etxeandía - and Cruz, said to be appearing in the next James Bond film, is listed as a producer.

In that period, these sales rose by 27.2% over the same period in 2013, accounting for 19.4% of all property sold. The information came from the General Council of Notaries, and points to the huge interest in properties in a buyers’ market, which has become more appealing since the pre-recession days, when property prices hit a high. Prices have dropped significantly since 2007, and the cost of property n the Canaries is among the lowest in the whole of Spain. British buyers accounted for 13.8% of

sales to foreigners, the improving exchange rate being one deciding factor for many. French buyers were responsible for 10.5%, followed by Russia (8.4%), Germany (7.5%) and Belgium (6.9%). As for emerging property investors, US buyers were the most improved (up 88.9%), followed by China (+83.1%), Ireland (+78%), France (+69.8%) and Russia (+62.6%). The majority of properties sold to overseas buyers were in coastal areas, driven by the “holiday home” buyers who are not expected to apply for resident status. At the end of the first quarter, the price per square metre of the properties purchased by foreigners stood at 1,588 euros, which was a 1.3% increase on 2013.

Canary Islands’ kids are overweight or obese, and the Ministry of Health has stepped in to try to slim them down.

The MoH conducted an “Aladdin” study, which indicated that 49.6% of children were above their ideal weight. Now, the Canaries’ Government department has introduced initiatives, including the Intervention Programme for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity (PIPO), to combat the worrying trend. Childhood and adolescent obesity rates in the islands are the highest in Spain. And adult rates are the country’s second-highest, according to the National Survey of Health and the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (SEEDO). The latter puts the increase down to

the abandonment of healthy fruit and vegetable-based diets, in favour of fat and sugarfilled food. Recommendations to reverse the trend include promoting healthy and adequate dietary needs, based on age and sex, as well as drinking water only, engaging in active play, reducing sittingdown time - and not rewarding children with excess fatty or sugary foods. Experts also say is essential to implement a balanced breakfast, which should comprise a dairy product, cereal

and a piece of fresh fruit every day. They have even proposed the elimination of soft drinks, juices (to be substituted with fresh fruit), bakery items and meats with a high-fat content, opting instead for fresh and seasonal foods. Menuplanning is also high on their list of priorities. Childhood obesity can lead to a number of health issues, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Prevention in childhood is the best course of action, say the experts, along with early detection to reduce factors relating to cardio-

vascular risk. The PIPO initiative, operational in the Canaries for about two years, is run by the Ministry of Health. It hopes to raise awareness throughout the Islands’ population. The department stresses the seriousness of childhood obesity, and that the old image of a “chubby” child being a healthy child is far from the truth. The PIPO was devised after the Ministry, realising that all cardiovascular prevention schemes were aimed at adults, knew the problem also affected the younger generations. The department’s strategy allows a multidisciplinary approach in primary health care, and establishes criteria for referral of cases to health centres and hospitals for more complex cases. The protocol also includes a pediatric food guide, together with healthy menus for those in the 4-18 age group.

Life’s a gas for Adeje ADEJE is the first Canarian town with piped gas, and a number of hotels are already using this form of fuel energy.

Adeje Mayor Adeje José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga , accompanied by Pablo Casado Reboiro, Canary Islands’ Endesa chief, at a press conference, welcomed the Gas Canarias’ decision to work in his borough. And he congratulated groups such as hotels Iberostar and H10, which have signed up for gas, as well as tourist attraction Siam Park, the first major Adeje company to install piped gas. Mayor Jose Miguel said: “For us in Adeje, it is a very important step forward as environmental gas is a product with less contamination. “It is also a more economic energy source with competitive prices, which will have direct repercussions in a tourist destination.” He added: “We have been pioneers in this respect, with Siam Park, who opted for piped gas

in 2007. And now, two hotels have signed up with the prospect of many more hotels joining them by the year’s end. Piped gas is the norm for those who have lived in Europe, but here in the Canary Islands it is still a work in progress. Newer homes will have electricity as the power source, while older

kitchens in certain restaurants and hotels will still be using bottled gas. But between now and the end of this year, According to Gas Canarias President José Manuel García Muñoz, the company hopes to have pipelines stretching through most of South Tenerife to La Caleta,

Adeje, and expanding from then on. The advantages are many because installations are safe. The company works on a high-energy efficiency rate, and the piped gas is acknowledged to be the cleanest of fossiltype fuel on the market, reducing emissions significantly. The gas’s

chemical composition is the reason for its acceptance as a cleaner fuel, with CO2 emissions 25-30% less than oil, and 40-50% less than coal. According to Gas Canarias, hotels investing in the switch to gas will see the economic benefits, and the initial outlay for changing to gas

will be met within two years. The gas supply is continuous, so there is no danger of power cuts, and payment methods are clear and transparent: the customers pay only for what they use. For now, though, larger installations only, such as hotels, will be switching to piped gas. But the Gas Canarias president said there might be some interested developers looking to build new homes or complexes in the future. Antonio Martin, Hotel Iberostar Playa Bougaville’s technical assessor, said: “We looked at the initial cost of making the switch, alongside the many advantages it would bring, and the reduction in CO2 emissions.” The decision was made to change and, with an initial outlay of 90,000 euros a projected saving of up to 50% in bills was made. Martin added that four more Iberostar hotels in Costa Adeje would soon be connecting to piped gas as well. The H10 Gran Tinerfe, With 365 rooms, has also been using piped gas since January.

Eli Wallach, a great all-round character! ELI WALLACH, one of the big screen’s great character actors, has died at the age of 98.

His films included The Magnificent Seven and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and he was admired for his all-round acting skills in a career spanning six decades. Wallach began his film career in 1956 after 10 years on stage, and his portrayal of bandit chief Calvera in The Magnificent Seven was regarded by many as his definitive role. When he received an honorary Oscar in 2011, he was described as a “quintessential chameleon”. Though he was never nominated for an Oscar during his 60-year career, the Academy rewarded him in 2011 for “effortlessly inhabiting a wide range of charac-

ters, while putting his inimitable stamp on every role”. His films included the classic westerns How the West Was Won and The Misfits. Wallach, best known for being the villain, made a lasting impression as Tuco opposite Clint Eastwood, in Sergio Leone’s 1966 spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Years later, Wallach said strangers would recognise him and start whistling the distinctive theme tune. “As an actor, I’ve played more bandits, thieves, warlords, molesters and mafioso than you could shake a stick at,” he once said. Surprisingly, considering his heavy-duty roles, he was also successful in light comedy. He appeared in many TV shows, including playing Mr Freeze for a spell in the 1960s Batman TV

series. The veteran star continued making films into his Nineties, his last big-screen appearance coming in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps in 2010. His death was con-

firmed by his daughter Katherine in the New York Times. Wallach was born on 7th December 1915 in Brooklyn to Polish Jewish immigrants. He graduated from

the University of Texas, initially intending to become a teacher. But his focus shifted to acting, and, after serving in World War II, he studied at the Actors’ Studio, where he became a practitioner of method acting. He first appeared on the New York stage in 1945, where he met his wife, Anne Jackson, to whom he was married for 65 years. Wallach made his London debut in 1954 with The Teahouse of the August Moon. His screen debut came two years later, playing an unscrupulous seducer in Baby Doll. The role earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Bafta award for Most Promising Newcomer. But the theatre remained his first love. “For actors, movies are a means to an end,” he said in 1973.

“I go and get on a horse in Spain for 10 weeks, and I have enough cushion to come back and do a play.’” He became a household name as Calvera in 1960’s The Magnificent Seven, alongside Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn. He went on to earn an Emmy in 1967 for his supporting turn in the drama Poppies Are Also Flowers, and picked up four further nominations - most recently for his guest turns in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2007) and Nurse Jackie (2010). Other notable roles came in How the West Was Won, Mystic River, The Holiday, Lord Jim, and The Godfather: Part III, playing an ill-fated Mafioso. Asked about possible retirement, he told the Times in 1997: ‘”What else am I going to do? I love to act.”

Obama’s soldiers in Baghdad to ‘advise’ battered Iraqi army NEARLY half the 300 special operations soldiers promised by US President Barack Obama to assist the Iraqi army are now in Baghdad.

Some could already be on the front lines of the fight against growing Sunni militant insurgency in Iraq. The rest should be there by the end of the week. John Kerry, US Secretary of State, has called for regional unity to expel the Sunni Isis rebels, who have taken large swathes of the country. On Tuesday, two teams totalling 40 US troops began work assessing Iraqi soldiers on the front line. An additional 90 personnel will work in Baghdad to set up a new joint-

operations command centre. The troops will have been joined by an additional four 50-man teams over this week. The Obama administration has stressed that the troops are not intended as operational force. Instead, they are there to advise the Iraqis and provide intelligence. The Iraqi Government had requested American air strikes, but Obama has been reluctant to do anything that could lead to accusations of US taking sides in a sectarian conflict. The insurgents, spearheaded by Islamists fighting under the banner of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis), have over-run much of North and West Iraq, including Mosul, the second-biggest city. The violence has claimed at least 1,075 lives in Iraq this month,

most of them civilians, according to the United Nations human-rights team. The UN said the figures, including a number of verified summary executions, should be seen as an absolute minimum. In a BBC interview on Tuesday, Kerry called for a “political strategy”, and for regional co-operation to resolve the unrest in Iraq. The American statesman said: “Every country in the region will combine in order to take on and expel Isis because it is simply unacceptable to have a terrorist organisation grabbing territory and challenging the legitimacy of governments.” Kerry said the Kurdish leaders had agreed there was “no military solution”, but added: “We need a political solution that deals with empowering the people in the

communities where Isis is today. Just a strike alone is not going to change the outcome. You need to have a full-fledged strategy, which is principally a political strategy.” Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, a member of Iraq’s Shia Muslim majority, has been criticised for concentrating power among his mostly Shia allies, and excluding other groups, including Sunni and Kurdish communities. Kerry has been talking with Kurdish leaders in the northern city of Irbil, where the rebels continue to advance and are fighting to seize a key oil refinery. The meetings came as the Kurdish region’s President, Massoud Barzani, forcefully suggested that it would seek formal independence from the rest of Iraq. Barzani said: “Iraq is

obviously falling apart. The time is here for the Kurdistan people to determine their future, and the decision of the people is what we are going to uphold.” The rebels say they have now fully captured the country’s main oil refinery at Baiji, north of Baghdad. But Iraqi officials said there was still fighting at the site and that troops were holding off the insurgents. The refinery, in Salahuddin province, has been under siege for 10 days, with militant attacks repulsed several times. The complex supplies a third of Iraq’s refined fuel, and the battle has already led to petrol rationing. Shia militants have been celebrating recent gains against Isis. The AFP news agency quoted officials as say-

ing that Iraqi air strikes near Baiji town on Tuesday had killed at least 19 people, with other air strikes on Husseibah in the west. Reuters quoted Iraqi officials as saying rebels had attacked the huge al-Bakr air base, north of Baghdad. They are also fighting for control of key border crossings in Anbar province, which link Iraq with Syria. There were conflicting reports over who controlled the Walid border crossing with Syria and the Traybil crossing with Jordan. On Tuesday morning, Sunni tribes aligned with Isis said they had seized the crossings. But Iraqi military spokesman Lt Gen Qassim Atta told a news conference in Baghdad they had been “fully recaptured” by security forces.

Wonga are so wronga! WONGA, the payday lender, has been ordered to pay compensation of £2.6m after sending threatening letters from non-existent law firms to its customers in arrears.

The letters suggested that legal action would be taken, but the law firms were false. In some cases, Wonga even added fees for these letters to customers’ accounts. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) - the City watchdog - said 45,000 customers would receive compensation. The loan company, which has apologised, said the tactic ended nearly four years ago. Wonga is the UK’s largest payday lender, making nearly four million loans to one million customers in 2012, according to the latest figures available. An investigation found that Wonga sent let-

ters to customers from phoney law firms called Chainey, D’Amato & Shannon”, and “Barker and Lowe Legal Recoveries”. The plan was to make customers in arrears believe that their outstanding debt had been passed to a law firm, with legal action threatened if the debt was not paid. The firm used this tactic to maximise collections by piling the pressure on customers, said the regulator.

Clive Adamson, FCA director of supervision, said: “Wonga’s misconduct was very serious because it had the effect of exacerbating an already-difficult situation for customers in arrears. “The FCA expects firms to pay particular attention to fair treatment of those who have difficulty in meeting their loan repayments.” The situation occurred between October 2008 and November 2010, involving Wonga and other companies within its

group. But because this happened before the FCA began regulating payday lenders, Wonga cannot be fined. It also said there would be no criminal investigation because it wanted to set up a compensation scheme as quickly as possible, and that a criminal probe would take time. Instead, Wonga will start contacting customers in July to offer compensation, with money likely to be paid by the end of the month. This will either be paid in cash, or customers will have their outstanding debt reduced. Tim Weller, interim chief executive of Wonga, said: “We would like to apologise unreservedly to anyone affected by the historical debt collection activity, and for any distress caused as a result. “The practice was unacceptable, and we voluntarily ceased it nearly four years ago.” Anyone who might have changed address

in the intervening period should contact Wonga. Labour MP Stella Creasy, who campaigns against payday loans, has questioned the lack of criminal investigation. She queried on social media site Twitter: “Why, in those instances where customers of Wonga charged debtcollection fees for these letters, is that not a police matter?” Richard Lloyd, executive director of consumer group Which? said: “It is right the FCA is taking a tougher line on irresponsible lending, and it does not get much more irresponsible than this. “It is a shocking new low for the payday industry, which is already dogged by bad practice - and Wonga deserves to have the book thrown at it.” The investigation was started by the FCA’s predecessor, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). But Wonga said it stopped the tactic voluntarily, and then of-

fered information to the OFT. Also, in April, Wonga discovered it had miscalculated some customers’ balances. This resulted in 200,000 people overpaying the company, but Wonga said the majority overpaid by under £5, and a larger number underpaid. Those who overpaid will be contacted by Wonga, and the underpaid debt will be cancelled. Mr Weller said the company would learn from these mistakes and was strengthening its internal controls. The Wonga problems come shortly after its boss, Niall Wass, quit his chief executive role after six months. He joined Wonga in January 2013 as chief operating officer - after the fake lawyer tactics ended - and became chief executive in November. Earlier this month, chairman and founder Errol Damelin also announced that he was planning to quit.

Ferry disaster trial underway THE trial has begun of the captain and 14 crew members of a ferry which sank in April, killing more than 300 people mainly teenagers on a school trip.

The captain and three officers are being tried at the district court in the southern city of Gwangju, South Korea. Captain Lee Joon-sok and the three officers are charged with “homicide through wilful negligence”. The crew are accused of “negligence and abandoning ship”. Five executives from ferry operator Chonghaejin Marine are also facing charges.

The Sewol ferry capsized and sank on 16th April with 476 people on board, and a total of 304 people are believed to have died. Divers have carried out extensive searches of the sunken ship to recover their bodies. And on Tuesday, they retrieved the remains of a female passenger. That brought the number of bodies recovered to 293, with 11 people still missing. Captain Joon-sok’s lawyer suggested he would contest the murder charge because there was no intent to kill. Prosecutors say the ship capsized because it was overloaded, with cargo stowed improperly.

The tragedy caused shock and outrage in South Korea after the ferry capsized and then sank off the country’s southern coast. The crew are accused of prioritising their own safety over that of passengers, and also of causing more deaths by instructing people to remain in their cabins instead of evacuating the ship. But questions are being asked about the possibility of a fair trial, given the wide assumption of guilt by the South Korean media. Students who survived the sinking will testify next month at a court close to their homes near Seoul, to minimise further stress to them.

Bulgaria tragedies as floods hit home HEAVY flooding, caused by torrential rain in Bulgaria, has led to at least a dozen deaths, with many more people missing.

Hailstorms and heavy rain in several parts of Bulgaria have proved a nightmare for days, and the extreme weather is set to continue. A state of emergency has been declared in parts of central and north-eastern Bulgaria, and a day of mourning was called for on Monday. Floodwaters in the Black Sea port city of Varna surged up to one metre, and many residents were rescued as cars were swept away. Hundreds more have been left without electricity or food. Ten people died in Varna, including two children. And there were at least another two deaths a few miles north in Dobrich, where electricity was down and water was flowing through the streets.

The equivalent of a month’s rain fell in the Varna and Burgas regions at the start of the week. The fast-rising waters caught many Varna people off-guard, with cars and homes being swept away by floodpower. Varna Mayor Ivan Portnih told Reuters: “The tragedy is enormous. I am here on a street in the suburb of Asparuhovo. The street is not here, the houses are not here, and there are cars on top of each other,” Many residents told how they clambered on to the tops of their houses to escape the

floods, and fire-fighters in the town of Kilifarevo, in central Bulgaria, performed 11 rooftop rescues. In Dobrich, the River Suha burst its banks, raising fears of a flood surge, while helicopters airlifted residents from their homes in the nearby Prilep village. But authorities said water levels were expected to fall rapidly. The flooding in Bulgaria follows on from similar deluges in the Balkans last month, when nearby Serbia and Bosnia were hit by the worst rainfall since modern records began.

Food weighing tonnes is binned every year

What a waste! AN astonishing one million tonnes of untouched food is thrown away by households every year.

It adds up to another incredible fact: around 25% of our “avoidable” food waste was not even opened after being bought. There are several factors involved, apparently. Confusion over bestbefore labelling, “buy one get one free” supermarket offers and the decline of basic cooking skills are all blamed for the “staggering” figures issued by the Government’s waste advisory body. Experts also warn that we are victims of a culture in which we feel we haven’t provided properly for our family unless they leave some food on their plates. The figures, compiled by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) from

two studies involving almost 3,000 UK households, show that Britons, in all, throw away seven million tons of food waste a year. While some of this, such as bones, shells and tea bags, is unavoidable, some 4.2m tons are classed as “avoidable waste” - food which could have been eaten. This is enough to provide six meals a week for the average family - and save them £700 a year. Shockingly, a quarter of this needless waste is thrown away whole or in unopened packaging. Potatoes make up almost a quarter of this untouched food waste, with some 230,000 tons going straight in the bin. Salads in unopened bags, and other fresh vegetables, account for 260,000 tons, with unwrapped and whole fresh fruit adding a further 240,000 tons. Some 10,000 tons of apples, 46,000 tons of carrots and one in every 10 bananas are thrown

away untouched. The research also shows that more than 60% of the tomatoes and mushrooms binned are still whole. The report following last year’s study by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, concluded that up to half of the food we buy from supermarkets goes in the bin. Institution experts said that because the shift away from small

shops to large-scale supermarkets, we have lost the sense food value. Just last month, several EU countries blamed confusion over “best-before” dates for millions of tons of food waste a year. Unlike “use-by” dates, which are there to denote the safety of meat and other foods that spoil quickly, “best-before” dates are usually

just a mark of food quality, such as flavour and texture. But it means that dried pasta, flour, tinned goods and other products with a long shelf life are being binned unnecessarily. Wrap also disclosed that almost half of the 4.2m tons of avoidable waste was binned because it was “not used in time”. Other reasons given for binning food

include people cooking too much. The British Dietetic Association’s Sue Baic said she was “always amazed” at how people struggled to turn leftovers into a meal. Colin Brown, one of the authors of last year’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers report, said such offers led to food being binned because people found eating the same thing monotonous. Emma Marsh, a food waste prevention manager at Wrap, described the figures as “quite staggering”. She added: “We all have our own reason for why food gets thrown away at home, so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. “We want to get people to look at the huge volume of food and drink ending up in the bin - and consider one thing they might do differently to make sure food gets tasted, not wasted.”

Is Russia the new Reich?

By Mike Walsh THE current tension between the United States, the European Union and their adversary, modern Russia, is reaching a point where World War III is being contemplated seriously by political pundits.

Russian President Vladmir Putin is certainly an enigma. He has recovered Russia’s dignity seriously, given his nation the international clout it lost during the early Nineties, when the country was, to all intents and purposes, Balkanised through the collapse of the Soviet Union. Back then, Russia’s political elite, if they could be described as such, lacked the resources and sophistication of the political and corporate West. Unused to capitalism, let alone democracy, these politicians, apparatchiks of the hapless Soviet Union, were no match for coping with Versailles Treaty Mark 2. Russia’s enormous mineral wealth was quickly commandeered by the West’s oil and mineral giants. Again, as with the ignominious Treaty that sealed Germany’s fate in 1918, Russia was prostrated and the Western powers were in there for the easy pickings. The term used by the Western powers was the “Product Sharing Agreement”. Cutting through the fine print, it meant that the conglomerates of the West would exploit Russia’s gas, and many mineral deposit reserves. Not only were the Russian people denied the profits from their own country’s natural wealth, but they were, thanks to the hapless and often inebriated President Boris Yeltsin, obliged to actually pay Western companies for the costs of setting

up their operations. It was rather like borrowing from your mother the bus fare to get the person who has just mugged you home on the train. What did catch them by surprise was when Yeltsin handed over the Russian Presidency to the then-unknown Putin. The new man, an exKGB officer, in the Kremlin’s hot-seat was the Clint Eastwood of international statesmanship. He was focused on cleaning up the town. One of the first of many reforms was that he tore up the Western-imposed Product Sharing Agreement. From then on, the Western conglomerates would buy Russia’s mineral wealth deposits at the same price they had been cheekily selling it on at. It gets worse. The Western corporates and their shareholders, who were running the Senate and Congress, parliaments and banking dynasties, too, would henceforth be required to bid for stakes in Russia’s underground and undersea wealth. There would also be a requirement that they, not the Russian people, would bear the cost of investment; exploration and extraction. Oligarchs, who had been using non-Russian financial resources, had previously seized the Soviet Union’s many industries. They had made billions overnight. The incoming President vowed to deal ruthlessly with corruption. Many oligarchs were imprisoned, while others fled to sanctuary in the West. The Third Reich in 1933 had torn up the terms of the Versailles Treaty and had nationalised Germany’s banking and industrial infrastructure. So yes, parallels can be drawn from these unfolding events. What of Russia today? No doubt about it, the “new” Putin is widely popular and internationally respected. Confusingly, Putin is almost as popular in the West as he is in his own country, but understandably, not by the political and banking elite. It was recently re-

vealed that if Putin were to stand for re-election, he would attract an unassailable 80%-plus of the vote. Displeasingly, there isn’t on the horizon any political figure who could come remotely near to challenging his popularity. The Russians, conversely – but, one supposes, not surprisingly - are jubilant at their becoming a world player again. There is a new optimism in the air, pride in their being Russian, a strident nationalism which, in fervour, comes close to matching that of the Germany of the Thirties. Just as disconcerting, the notorious Hammer and Sickle, the Red Star too, is endemic throughout Putin’s Russia. Imagery of the blooddrenched dictator Josef Stalin is seen everywhere. Few need reminding that this monster was responsible for the deaths of not six million but tens of millions of peoples. To these martyrs can be added many millions more who suffered the most cruel hardship in hundreds of labour camps which pockmarked the USSR landscapes. Many Russians admire Stalin for one reason only. They have been brainwashed into denying the existence of the suffering this tyrant caused. Many Russians today are in denial of his infamies. They prefer to remember the Russian leader (a Georgian actually) who made the then-Russia we know of as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), a world-player. Ironically, Russians

today enjoy a lifestyle, opportunity, freedom from fear and a personal wealth which would have evaded them in Stalin’s Russia. That is by-the-by because most peoples are guilty or blessed with selective memories. Under Putin, Russia’s wealth has been returned to the people, and there is much more to come. It is 15 years since President Yeltsin handed over the reins of power to his successor. The changes have, if noth-

ing else, been remarkable. In 1999 Russia’s GDP (country’s wealth factor) was a miserably $195 billion. Think Ukraine today. It is now $2,113bn GDP. Inflation was 36% in 1999 and is now 6.5%. Russia’s gold reserves in 1999 were just 12.6bn. The gold bullion in Russia’s bank vaults, nationalised is now $511bn. Small nations such as Belgium and the Netherlands hold far higher reserves in their bank vaults. Yet Russia is by far the world’s biggest country, certainly, in terms of mineral wealth, think Saudi Arabia 20fold. The 1999 government debt was 78% BBM. It is now a manageable 8% BBM. State pensions have been increased 20fold since 1999. Salaries have also risen to 20 times what they were back in 1999. Ironically, Europe, certainly cash-starved Spain and Turkey, benefit enormously from the disposable wealth of today’s Russian workers, entrepreneurs and professional classes. In many other ways,

modern Russia has the clout that evaded them even during their muchmissed Stalin period. What we see today is a process that precedes all conflicts which are trade-based. The West wants to remove Russia as a competitor. I quote John Flynn, who in 1944 observed: “The enemy aggressor is always pursuing a course of larceny, murder, rapine and barbarism. We are always moving forward with high mission, a destiny imposed by the Deity to regenerate our victims while incidentally capturing their markets, to civilise savage and senile and paranoid peoples while blundering accidentally into their oil wells.” Does this answer the question, is Russia the new Reich? This, one supposes, depends on the opinions of the reader. It is a subjective view and one which will keep the intellectuals engaged for quite some time. Let us hope that time is ours to enjoy; that it is not snuffed out by World War III.

Celebrity MasterChef BBC1, 20:30

Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. The heat continues as the four remaining celebrities battle for a place in the semi-finals. After a knowledge and skills test where the celebrities must demonstrate their ability to identify a tray of ingredients, they are sent outside the relative safety of the MasterChef kitchen and into the highly-pressured world of mass catering. Split into pairs, the celebrities have to be on top of their game to successfully cater lunch for 120 hungry staff members of the Wellcome Trust. The teams must prepare meat-based, vegetarian and dessert dishes in just two and a half hours. In the heat of the kitchen the celebrities must keep their cool and rely on teamwork and skill more than ever if they want to triumph.

A Cabbie Abroad BBC2, 21.00 This week London cabbie Mason McQueen is leaving the streets of the capital to work in one of the coldest and most remote cities on earth – Iqaluit on the edge of the Canadian Arctic. He’ll join a small and brave band of cab drivers who keep the city on the move in all weathers - there is no public transport in the city, so the taxis are vital to keep the city on the move. For eight months of the year Iqaluit is cut off by sea ice, and Mason is arriving at the coldest time of year. The temperature is minus 30 degrees. He’s put straight to work and faces the most difficult driving conditions he’s ever encountered. He takes his life in his hands as he battles Arctic storms, roads icy with snow, and winds gusting 70 miles per hour, to get his passengers to their destinations. Iqaluit is Canada’s gateway to the eastern Arctic. It’s the boomtown of the far north. The population has doubled in the last decade, and as Mason picks up fares he starts to learn about diverse and hardy souls who live in this unforgiving environment. The city is a melting pot of nationalities, but the majority of people who live here are the original inhabitants of the Arctic – the Inuit. Through his passengers, Mason finds out that behind the beauty and wildness of this city there is a tragic tale. In less than a hundred years the lives of the Inuit have changed dramatically. Once skilled hunters living off the land, they are now losing their traditional values and way of life and are plagued by high levels of suicide, homelessness and drug abuse. Along the way Mason meets a wide cast of quirky locals who have chosen to make this city their home, from Nancy the Inuit throat singer to Fishmonger Joe, who gives Mason some local culinary treats, and expert hunter Solomon who takes Mason out on the vast sea ice.

Alan Titchmarsh and the team transform unloved spaces into dream gardens for some very special people. Today, Alan comes to the rescue of a family in Manchester whose garden has become a no-go area. Darren and Lesley Chan have four daughters but their youngest, 10 year old Amelie, was born with CHARGE syndrome. This debilitating condition has left her deaf, partially sighted and in need of constant care. Darren has given up work to look after her and Lesley has retrained as a midwife and become the family’s main bread winner. All of this has meant that their once loved garden has fallen into disuse and disrepair. Alan packs them all off for a few days and summons his team to begin the transformation. Landscape artist David Domoney shows how to make a tired old deck look as good as new, Frances Tophill explains how to get the best out of a garden and Katie Rushworth demonstrates how to create a stunning display of lilies.

Miranda Sawyer meets Viv Albertine and some of the other key female figures of the era including Chrissie Hynde, The Raincoats, and punk antiheroine Jordan to look at how they inspired a generation of young women with the notion that anyone could do anything if they wanted to. Police Under Pressure BBC2, 21.00 British policing is under pressure like never before as forces up and down the country try and cope with the biggest cuts to their budgets in modern times. South Yorkshire Police has more trouble than most. It’s struggling to rebuild a reputation tainted by the tragedy of Hillsborough and some of the worst crime figures in Britain. The government body responsible for inspecting police forces has just told the force they must improve those crime figures or risk being taken over by the government inspectors. They have just six months to turn things around. With exclusive access to both officers on the ground and the most senior ranks, this film follows the force as it attempts to lower crime with drastically reduced resources. As the pressure mounts, so the cracks begin to appear: in the declining morale of ordinary officers and in the growing divisions among senior ranks over what to do. The film raises fundamental questions about the state of modern policing: with cuts biting ever deeper, is it time to accept there are certain things the police just can’t afford to do?

The Cost of Cheap Alcohol. With the World Cup upon us, supermarkets are seeing a surge in demand for alcohol. No longer is it necessary to cross the Channel to stock up on cheap booze; the local superstore is now the place to head with multipack deals that can work out at less than 70p for a pint of lager: cheaper than some mineral water. Whether it’s vodka, beer or cider, cheap alcohol is changing the way a generation drink. Rather than head to the pub, ‘pre-loading’ or ‘pre-drinking’ is now the favourite way for young drinkers to start a night out. But there is concern that the wide availability of cheap alcohol may have a darker side. Alcoholrelated crime, violence, accidents and disease are costing the country billions of pounds a year. Antony Barnett criss-crosses Britain, examining how the nation’s drinking habits may have changed. He looks at the true cost of cheap alcohol and investigates how the drinks industry have mobilised to fight off government attempts to clamp down on cheap drink.

This time 12 months ago, German Sabine Lisicki followed up her shock fourth-round victory over Serena Williams by beating Kaia Kanepi to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon. There was also a straight-sets win for eventual champion Marion Bartoli, as she came through a rain-interrupted match against rising star Sloane Stephens.

They say one man’s trash is another’s treasure, and nowhere is that more true than at Lots Road Auction House, in glamorous Chelsea. This unique institution is an Aladdin’s cave bursting with magnificent artefacts showcasing the ever-changing taste of London’s super-rich. Populated by eagle-eyed collectors, opportunistic dealers and wonderfully eccentric staff, the auction house is a backdrop for extraordinary characters buying and selling over 400 items each week. This episode is all about taking risks. When long-serving valuer Bob takes a gamble on a shipping tycoon’s rococo-style bedroom suite, descriptions range from ‘dictator chic’ to ‘a monstrosity’. Bob is unsure about it as auction day beckons, especially since boss Roger Ross is clamping down on risky lots. Meanwhile, the auction house’s youngest valuer, Megan, is questioning her own choices as she nervously enters 40 designer handbags into auction.

Whale Adventure with Nigel Marven Channel 5, 19:00

An Incredible Journey Begins. Natural history adventure series. Nigel Marven follows a grey whale mother and her newborn calf as they undertake the longest mammal migration on earth, over 5,000 miles up the Pacific coast of North America from Mexico to Alaska. In Baja California in Mexico, the newborn grey whale calves spend their first months of life in the safety of the San Ignacio lagoon, suckling and learning swimming skills. At the lagoon, Nigel talks to the scientists who are studying the whales and finds unexpected birds of prey nesting at the water’s edge. As the whales start their journey north towards the border with the USA, he takes a parallel road trip through the cacti-studded desert, meeting rattlesnakes, lizards and antelope en route.

W C c h oice The Betrayers ITV1, 21.00 This new documentary for ITV tells the astonishing stories of people who have suffered the ultimate betrayal at the hands of someone they love and trust. From false identities to fake terminal illnesses, the programme investigates how intelligent and sensible victims can fall for a seemingly incredible web of lies and probes whether serial fraudsters are driven by criminal greed or their own psychological flaws. It reveals that fraudsters don’t always seem like typical criminals. David Checkley, labelled ‘the man with the golden tongue’ swindled over 30 women out of hundreds of thousands of pounds to fund a luxury lifestyle. Public school-educated unemployed ex-convict Alistair Stewart posed as a millionaire banker and lavishly romanced a Harvard educated property broker while conning her out of her million-dollar savings. The family of a dying man were targeted by friend Beth Hood who faked cancer for her own gain tell their shocking story, and Paul Dable, who defrauded his own parents before setting light to the family home with everyone inside, reveals what drove him to do it. Susan Baio met Checkley after deciding to brave online dating two years after her marriage failed. At first he was charming, telling her he was an American helicopter pilot who retrained as an architect. Having previous experience of internet dating, she was careful to check him out and his background seemed legitimate: “I met his friends, I met his family. I spoke to people who he dealt with in business and they would say things like, ‘I’ve known him for twenty years, he’s such a lovely guy.’ She reluctantly agreed to lend him £20,000 after he told her his accountant had run off with a large amount of his money, but his deception was uncovered when he sent an intimate picture to her mobile phone. In fact he had sent the same picture to 13 other women and out of the blue, she received a phone call from one of them asking whether she had also been sent the intimate image, which she confirmed. “I said, ‘I am his girlfriend. He is my partner.’ And she threw up on the phone. It’s like the blood in your veins turns to ice. It’s the most frightening think you can think of to suddenly realise that the person you’re with is not who they say they are and is actually a very, very dangerous man and you are in danger and your family is in danger.” While living on benefits in a bedsit in Burgess Hill 53-year-old Alastair Stewart, a public school educated fraudster, created a fake identity online. He became Alex Stewart; a billionaire who’d made a fortune at Goldman Sachs and was now running an investment company with a Swiss HQ. His target was Nina Siegenthaler, a successful high end Caribbean property dealer, who handed over her million-dollar savings to him to invest after falling in love. She was in a unusually vulnerable position - going through a divorce - when she met him. DS Mick Richards of Sussex Police put together the case against Stewart, and gives an insight into the fraudster’s tactics: “He was flying [Nina] back into the UK. He would pay for her air fares. He would pay for her accommodation. They even went on a shopping trip to Harrods and he bought her a £35,000 wrist watch. Two or three thousand pounds on a laptop. I mean, when we spoke to Nina she said she didn’t want the watch but it was a gift and she couldn’t really refuse it. And all the time it’s her money that’s being spent.” In Belfast, the family of Frank Toman, who was dying from cancer, were targeted by family friend Beth Hood who faked her own cancer to gain their trust. Having met her outside the cancer centre, she began to visit their house, eventually persuading them to lend her several thousand pounds for a trip to see a fictitious oncologist in California. She promised to ask about Frank’s condition - but on her return claimed they told her there was nothing they could do.

Inside Asprey: Luxury by Royal Appointment ITV1, 21.00

W C c h oice

Inside Asprey gains exclusive access into an extraordinary world where unique, luxury British goods have been made and sold to some of the world’s wealthiest people for more than two centuries. Situated on one of London’s most prestigious streets and spread over five Georgian town houses, Asprey has been jewellers to the Royal family since Queen Victoria’s reign. For the first time Asprey shows cameras inside and beyond its immaculate shop floor, revealing just what it takes to attract the richest people on the planet. The programme follows the fortunes of the staff, the store and its customers as Asprey strives to keep a traditional business alive in the modern world. From a £55,000 ‘gorilla’ safe to a £2.4 million rare diamond ring, the items found on display in Asprey show a business far removed from the trend for mass production, which believes the super-rich will still pay for handfashioned British products. The programme meets some of Asprey’s clientele, including Samuel L Jackson, whose desire for the finest quality along with a personalised service means that they are willing to pay an extremely high premium to buy into the brand. As the programme shows, Asprey operates on more than one level. The programme captures the sharply contrasting upstairs/downstairs worlds of the people serving the super-elite at ground level, while, hidden above their heads, some of the country’s top craftspeople make the products, using skills they have honed over their working lives, but which are increasingly rare today. Asprey began as a maker of elaborate dressing cases, but today jewellery is the most important department in the shop with much of it made in the oldest and largest workshop of its kind on Bond Street, above the store.

Nessa Stein is a beautiful and powerful Anglo-Israeli businesswoman who strives for equality and peace in the Middle East, heading up the powerful Stein Foundation with her brother Ephra. Nessa’s father was a Zionist arms procurer, and as children, she and her brother Ephra witness his assassination. As an adult, inheriting her father’s company, she dramatically inverts its purpose from supplying arms to laying highspec data cabling networks between Israel and the West Bank. Now in her thirties, her sudden appointment as a life peer, apparently due to her tireless promotion of projects for reconciliation between the Israelis and Palestinians, creates an international political maelstrom. As she receives her ennoblement from the House of Lords, Samir Meshal - a Palestinian businessman with connections to the family - is killed, forcing Nessa and her family to become even more vigilant. With their actions closely monitored by Whitehall and the secret intelligence agencies, both at home and abroad, tensions increase when Kasim, the young son of Atika, the nanny employed by Ephra, is kidnapped.

Entertainment

By Jamie Drew WHEN people make the decision to follow a certain career path, they do so with care and look into every aspect of the new job.

This may be a complete change of direction. For example; Mike has been a mechanic for 15 years and has now decided

27th June 2014 - 3rd July 2014

I WANNA BE A SINGER!

to become a florist. But he wouldn’t just go out and buy some flowers and become a florist. The same can be said about entertainment. If you decide you want to become a singer, it is a lot easier to put yourself out there as long as you have the confidence. However, if I bought a bunch of flowers from Mike the mechanic, the

chances are that the flower arrangement would be sub-standard and, maybe, the flowers wouldn’t last long. The same can be said about people who can sing a handful of songs, or enough to get through a 45-minute set. Those who have gone after the glory and applause only, are not prepared to put the hard work into all

the other aspects of that role. Or, they are completely deluded. These artistes are entitled to try, and some will eventually succeed. The moral of this story is that if you want nice flowers, which will be beautifully arranged, will last, make people smile and be worth the money, then don’t go to Mike. He’s a mechanic and not a florist.

MANY of the artistes who decide to make Tenerife their home are already well-travelled by the time they settle here. Helena Campbell, a female vocalist of the highest degree, has done just that. She arrived here almost five years ago and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Helena has worked the UK scene and toured Scotland extensively. And before moving here, Helena worked in the clubs, bars and hotels on the beautiful island of Cyprus. However the small Mediterranean island was not enough to capture her heart, and a change was in order. Helena re-located to Tenerife and began working here. It is always difficult to market yourself as “just a singer” when you are surrounded by tributes and themed acts. It takes a couple of years before the regular Tenerife holiday-makers get to know the name of an act and actively seek it out. Helena has a good work ethic and is not afraid of hard graft. She always puts herself in the mix should there be any charity or fund-raising events IT has become commonplace as an entertainment tool to use karaoke to attract the crowds into bars. Love it or loathe it, karaoke provides entertainment in many ways. When a karaoke singer takes it all too seriously, it takes the fun element away from what is supposed to be a pleasant pastime.

that require an artiste to perform to help those less fortunate. I have seen Helena on stage countless times and I can honestly say I’ve never seen her sing the same song more than once. This is probably because we have never worked together on the same stage, and also because Helena is constantly keeping her repertoire up to date. She is generally the first female vocalist to be right on top of brandnew songs, and she often performs them before their official release into the UK charts. For instance, Clean Bandits’ Rather Be has probably been the most popular song of 2014 so far. And by the time it reached No.1 in the UK, Helena had already been singing this song in her set list for two weeks. This, coupled with an exquisite voice and a musical taste second to none, is what stands her apart from other singers. As an artiste, technology is now important - and quick access to your music library is imperative. Helena has a repertoire larger than most singers, which she has gained from years

of working as a vocalist and learning the words to hundreds of songs. These two dynamics, together with her talent, enable Helena to mix up her set list according to the audience in front of her. As somebody who books acts regularly, I would have no problem booking Helena to work in front of any age group, and she will work the crowd like a boss. The only downside for me is that the space in her diary is very limited and it is difficult to book this talented, popular singer. I hope that one day I will get to share the stage with Helena and see her perform her full show every week instead of just seeing bits. Needless to say, the “bits” I have seen are enough to cement my opinion of this outstanding vocalist. She is an asset to any entertainment programme and a must if you are looking to book her. Right now, Helena tells me she has some availability left in her diary, so I would urge anyone thinking about putting a top female vocalist like Helena on their billboard not to waste time. Get her booked now!

Karaoke or Karajokey?

say things like: “Can I go on next because we’re going somewhere else.” To which the compere should reply: “See ya then!” There are definitely different types of karaoke singer - some you warm to and some you don’t. But one thing is for certain, though: it will be a long time before karaoke loses its popularity.

On the other hand, those participants who are fabulous singers, but have not got the drive to make the step to becoming a professional singer, can sometimes be as entertaining as one of the circuit professionals. The best thing about karaoke is the fun side,

for those who know they are nothing special but enjoy having a go at something which would otherwise be out of their reach. It is a phenomenon in itself and, in some ways, has become a serious activity. Karaoke singers are becoming more demanding as their

knowledge of technology increases, with some insisting on specific tracks and the use of the digital key-changer. All this would go over the top of the fun-seeker’s head, yet it is most important to some. Then there are the children, all of whom want to sing

“the song from Frozen.” This song is going to be a compere’s nightmare this summer during the school holidays. Next are the ones who think they are brilliant and are totally deluded. These are the ones who can’t wait in a queue and

The Heritage Grill, El Camison

Wine galore, and super food RELATIVELY new to the El Camison strip, The Heritage Grill has been open for a just couple of months on the edge of Las Americas. But you probably know its sister restaurant, La Brasa, which has been well-established for years. We were met by the owner, Javier, and seated in the rustic-style outdoor area. Immediately, we were brought marinated olives, bread,

oil and a special “Black Salt” for dipping, while awaiting our drinks. We let Javier select a nice red wine to go with our food from his modern, climatised wine cellar. We had a Ribera del Duero, Roble, which was quite young, not too heavy and quite fruity. But for wine connoisseurs, he has more than over 80 varieties of wine available for you to choose from. As usual, deciding

what to choose to eat was a chore, simply because there were so many delicious dishes. In the end, we went for the Salmon and Avocado Tartar and the Cured Beef and Foie Gras Rolls to start (the grilled Provolone Cheese with Chorizo Sausage almost made it on our plates, too). The Salmon came marinated in a citrus dressing, topped with creamy Avocado

and Caviar pearls. The Cured Beef rolls came with a wine and red fruit reduction, and caramelised apple pieces, and the salty/sweet combination worked very well. For mains, we asked for a recommendation and, as the Heritage specialises in its coalgrilled meats and fish, that’s what we went for. Cod Gallega and Grilled Sirloin of Beef it was. The fish was boneless, in a tomato and herb sauce, and just fell apart in your mouth. The beef was tender and cooked to perfection, although we did find out it was “Cow” as opposed to “Beef” because it was from a more mature animal - and the meat itself was matured for between 30-60 days. Other specialities included Roasted Pig, Shoulder of Lamb, and Grilled Lobster, all slowcooked and no need to pre-order. By the end of it we were stuffed, but we just about managed to squeeze in a dessert and

a cheeky glass of Port to wash it down. “Torrija” was the name of our Canarian speciality dessert, and we had to ask what it was. Yes, it was delicious, but we couldn’t quite figure out the combination of tastes. It was actually a light coconut sponge, topped with a caramelised crust and a side of refreshing lemon sorbet. We asked Javier where the “Heritage” name came from

because, although it’s a British-sounding name, the menu is more Mediterranean-orientated. He told us they wanted to signify and highlight their family tradition – thus, “Heritage”. So now we know, and we will definitely be back soon to sample more. The Heritage Grill is open from 1-4pm for lunch, and from 7pm11.30pm for dinner. It is closed on Mondays.

By Val Sainsbury A “SUGAR TAX” should be introduced by the UK Government to help curb obesity in childhood.

Campaign group Action on Sugar has produced a seven-point plan to discourage children from consuming foods and soft drinks with high levels of added

27th June 2014 - 3rd July 2014

Sweet way to taxation sugar. The group wants measures brought in to cut added sugar in food by 40% by 2020, to cut fat in foods and to ban sports sponsorship by “junk food” companies. The Department of Health has said it will consider the recommendations. Action on Sugar is a group of specialists concerned with sugar and its effects on health. It says one in five in the UK’s 10-11 age group is now obese, while one in three is overweight. The group has produced an action plan

for the government following a request for its views from Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. The seven proposed measures are: *Reduce added sugars in food by 40% by 2020 *Ban all forms of targeted marketing of ultra-processed, unhealthy foods and drinks to children *Dissociate physical activity with obesity by banning junk food sports sponsorships *Reduce fat by 15% in ultra-processed foods by 2020 *Limit the availability of ultra-processed foods

and sweetened soft drinks as well as reducing portion sizes *Introduce a sugar tax to incentivise healthier food Professor Graham MacGregor, the group’s chairman, said current policies were not working and that obesity could be prevented “if the food environment is changed”. He added: “The UK requires the implementation of this coherent strategy, starting by setting incremental sugar reduction targets for soft drinks this summer. No delays, no excuses.”

Dr Aseem Malhotra, cardiologist and science director of Action on Sugar, said: “It is really quite shameful that the food industry continues to spend billions in junk food advertising targeting children. “It’s time to bust the myth of physical activity and obesity and dissociate junk food and sport.” A Department of Health spokesman said: “We know some people eat too many calories, including sugar. Childhood obesity is at its lowest since 1998, but

more should still be done. “Next week, we will get expert scientific advice on sugar which will help shape future thinking. We will consider these recommendations as part of this.” Earlier this year, Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England, said a sugar tax may have to be introduced to curb obesity rates. She told a committee of MPs that she believed “research will find sugar is addictive and we may need to introduce a sugar tax”.

Pregnant boozers put babies’ health at risk THE number of babies being born with foetal alcohol syndrome caused by boozy, pregnant mums has increased by almost 40% in three years.

Between 2012 and 2013, doctors treated 252 cases of the syndrome, which can cause learning difficulties, organ damage and facial deformity. And that’s just in England. That is almost triple the 89 cases treated in

1997-98, when records started being kept. Susan Fleisher, chief executive of the National Organisation for Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, said: “There have been studies in Italy and the US which say that between 2-5% of the population are affected by this. “And, remember, Britain is the No.1 bingedrinking country in Europe. The chances are that we are closer to 5%, although we can’t say that for sure because it is under-diagnosed and difficult to diagnose.”

Foetal alcohol syndrome occurs when an unborn baby is deprived of oxygen and nutrients through a high blood-alcohol concentration. That limits the growth of white matter in the baby’s brain, potentially causing learning difficulties. A lack of oxygen between weeks six and nine of pregnancy can also cause facial deformities while the baby’s features form, while drinking in the first three months can cause organ damage. Signs that a baby is

suffering from the syndrome include small and narrow eyes, a small head, a smooth area between the nose and the lips and a thin upper lip. Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for the UK, previously said expectant mothers should drink no more than one

or two units - equivalent to a bottle of beer or a small glass of wine - once or twice a week. She added: “Ideally, mothers should avoid alcohol completely while expecting a baby.” The DoH also gives advice to mothers on their Start 4 Life website on avoiding risky

behaviours while pregnant, including drinking. However, Luciana Berger, the shadow public health minister, said the government was not doing enough to warn expectant mother of the dangers of drinking heavily while pregnant.

Statins row not so Nice MOST low-risk statin patients would refuse to take the drugs if they knew “the lack of benefit” they offered.

That’s the contentious view of Dr Rubin Minhas, who has advised national healthcare guidance body Nice on the cholesterol-busting drugs. He has attacked the group’s advice that millions of adults at low risk of heart disease should be given statins. “These drugs should be used only in patients with a high risk of heart disease,” he said forcefully. “The benefit to low-risk patients is so slim that most would refuse to take them if they knew.” Dr Minhas, a member of the British Medical Journal ethics committee, was on the Nice team which, in 2008,

gave the original recommendations about statins. But he questions evidence on which the body has recommended its increased use because it was sponsored by companies linked to the drugs. “It is difficult to give credence to studies which are not independently funded, nor fully disclosed to the public,” he said. “We need to have an immediate overhaul of the system, which allows conflicts of interests between doctors and drug companies because their decisions could, ultimately, have a negative impact on patient care.” Eight of the 12 experts on the Nice panel who recommended the new guidance have received money from the drug companies which make statins, though there is no suggestion this money influenced their decision.

The guidelines, which are still in draft form, say anyone with a 10% or greater risk of heart disease within 10 years should be eligible for treatment with statins. This would lead to 12 million adults routinely taking them, even though they have been linked to side-effects that include severe muscle pain, cataracts, diabetes, liver problems, fatigue, memory loss and impotence. Professor Mark Baker, director of Nice’s Centre for Clinical Practice, said: “The draft guideline encourages the use of statins in well people to stop them becoming victim to cardiovascular disease. “All those sitting on our expert groups have to declare any interests they may have. None of them has put his/her name to the recommendations to make money for themselves.”

BARE FACTS ABOUT THE NEW C-STRING although on Amazon they are under three quid, which is not surprising as there is little to them. For those of you with nothing better to do, have a look on Amazon. Type in C-String and you will see how this form of swimwear/underwear has gone utterly mad, with all styles and colours - even C-Strings for men. My personal favourite is the matching leopard print for you and your partner. The reviews of people who have worn the C-String tend to agree that it is “not for everyday use”. Well, are we surprised at that? The most worrying thing about the CString in my opinion is how uncomfortable it looks, and also, how do you actually move in it? No bending over, that’s for sure. Now, for those of you considering one, I’m afraid they are not for everyone. The company seems to make sizes for the smaller lady only. I cannot think why!

By Ruth Benson LAST week’s column about the new line in men’s swimwear - the “alter lateral flash thong” - has provoked interest with the female alternative, the “C-String”.

Yes ladies, you too can have that all-over tan with the latest female swimwear. Although we have no evidence yet of this being endorsed by a celebrity, it has been speculated that Kendall Jenner wore one recently for the Much Music Video Awards. So how does it work? The company selling them, C-String Direct, claims they can be worn as underwear or swimwear because they “eliminate visible panty lines” and stop tan lines. The item itself retails for about £20 on the CString direct website,

The C-String can only be described as a lady’s feminine product with string at the back. Reading reviews on Amazon, the string is more like a wire to make sure it stays put. Well, we wouldn’t want anything showing now, would we? My favourite review

comes from Austinman, on Amazon, who says: “I bought one for my wife. She loves it and so do I. We have bought me one and it’s great to wear. It’s like having nothing on.” So for all you couples out there, here’s something you can both enjoy together!

You NEVER SAY ‘NEVER’

By Carl from Robot

THERE’S many a time in the salon when, while giving consulta-

tions to clients before their appointment, things are discussed that can alarm or bring disapproval to some.

Sometimes, what you see in the mirror isn’t what we as stylists see. Many times, and it’s normally over cuts or

colours, I literally have to point out what is staring back at the clients - something they simply cannot see for themselves. For instance, as we age, so does our hair and complexion. Thus, what suited you at 30 isn’t going to do you justice at 50. Our skin tone changes, and so does the amount of make-up we wear (you girls, anyway). And as your face pales, so should your colour as well. Don’t get stuck in a colour rut and leave it too late to change your natural colour, even subtly. Staying dark, if that was once your natural colour, can look fake and can draw all the colour from your skin. Yes, I know it’s difficult to imagine yourself lighter if you’ve always been a brunette. But trust me, it will be a lot more flattering.

So, too, if your style needs updating or modifying. As you change your clothing style, your hair should follow. Listen to the advice of your stylists and/or ask them how they think things can be improved. A lot of the time, we may think you’re happy with what you have if you say nothing. But

there’s nothing wrong with change. It can make you feel so much better about yourself. We stylists love a challenge and No, we aren’t going to get upset if you keep asking us to come up with something new. Use your stylist’s knowledge and experience. Think outside the box and go for some-

thing you may not have had before. You can get behind with fashion and styling if you reside in Tenerife because we live in a “bubble” here. But that’s no reason to stick with what you know and stay on the safe side. If you don’t try, you will never know. So NEVER SAY “NEVER”

By Monica Dyson A FEW years ago, when on holiday in America, my husband and I became friendly with a young man from Australia.

He was taking advantage of a three-month service break with pay, and was using the time to travel around the world. His common term of endearment to us and other travellers was a word which would be used here in the UK as a derogatory term to describe a person of uncertain parentage or il-

legitimacy. But common enough, apparently, in his country! As he was visiting Britain on the next leg of his holiday, we suggested that it would be a good idea for him not to use the term here as it could cause offence. He was amazed! “What words do you use then?” he asked. “Possibly, it would be better to call people ‘luv’ or ‘duck’”, we said. Being a macho Ozzie outback type, he was totally gobsmacked! “Do you call men ‘love’?” he replied in amazement!

Of course, here in Sheffield, Yorkshire, we are used to what is a classic term of affection in the North of England, and so we have been so indignant at the recent guidance given to volunteers at this year’s Tour de France, which is expected to attract many visitors from outside the region. Using terms like ‘luv’ have been banned in case they offend visitors, in common with words like ‘mate’, ‘duck’ or ‘darling’. A spokesperson for the Welcome to York-

shire tourism agency said Yorkshire was wellknown for its warm welcome. But the agency didn’t want volunteers using language that could cause confusion for overseas visitors! I’m sorry, but what a load of bilge! Surely, local language and dialect is all part of the rich culture of the British Isles? This is political correctness at its best! There would be almost no part of Britain the Tour de France could travel through that would be immune from local terminology. And

It helps in urgent cases of animal welfare, educates animal owners and develops campaigns of responsible ownership. It also organises fun events such as dog shows, obedience trials and animal awareness, to raise funds. Susan and Colette had a wonderful time and want to thank everyone who attended and helped raise money. We are happy to announce that Mrs. Jane Schofield was the winner of the 100-euro voucher we raffled. Vet fees are expensive and, with one in three pets needing veterinary treatment each year, you are more likely to claim on your pet insurance than on your household or car insurance.

Ibex offers three levels of cover: Bronze, Silver or Gold, so you can choose the one which suits your needs and pocket. Ibex covers cats and dogs from eight weeks old, covering unexpect-

ed costs as a result of vets fees, death from accident, loss by theft or straying, boarding fees and more. Cover your dog for only 175 euros per year, or your cat for 120 euros with the bronze cover.

For more information, call into our office at Avda. Juan Carlos I, Edif. Simon, Local A7, Blq 3, Los Cristianos, or phone us on 922 753 831. Ibex insurance, for all your insurance needs!

if it were going through Newcastle, they would hear people described as ‘pet’, which could really confuse! In the run-up to London’s 2012 Olympic Games, one hotel chain produced a pamphlet to help Olympic tourists understand a variety of accents and expressions, from urban London slang to Scottish colloquialisms. Included were the expressions apparently used in other parts of the country to describe a cup of tea. In London, ‘rosie lee; in Liverpool, ‘cup o char’; in Birmingham, ‘kippertae’; and in Manchester, ‘scooby doo’. Although I must admit that some of those are a bit foreign to me! Included was ‘dead chuffed’ for pleased and ‘Eyup’ for hello, with which I’m a bit more familiar. A few years ago a man in the dock at a local magistrates court was reprimanded when he replied “yes luv” to a question from the judge, who said it was disrespectful to use the term in a court of law and that it exemplified the erosion of common decency in Britain. Eh? A spokesperson from the Yorkshire Dialect Society said the judge was being discriminatory by insisting on standard English usage over traditional Yorkshire dialect, which was English spoken since Anglo-Saxon times, with ‘luv’ being a non-sexual term, used by people of both genders as a term of endearment, and natural for people from this area. In Sheffield, the word ‘love’ is used without thinking. You might bump into someone in the street and say “sorry, luv”. A restaurant waitress could say: “What can I get for you, luv?” It’s a word we use commonly here, and it’s part of who we are. It’s also used in other parts of the country. You’d be hard-pressed

to get through an episode of Coronation Street without hearing it! Other parts of the country use words like ‘hun’, ‘hen’ or ‘cockle’ ‘babe’ being an expression of modern times with the younger generation, whereas luvvies in the thespian world often call everyone ‘darling’. In Grimsby, Lincolnshire, there have been sessions at the town’s central library giving free instruction on old-fashioned expressions in danger of dying out in the area. It seems that, with so many migrants from Eastern Europe coming into the area to work in the agricultural industries, many words from their native languages will be absorbed into the local dialect. And eventually, many local expressions may die out. Indeed, many of the younger generation from Lincolnshire are not familiar with words like ‘gingham’, meaning umbrella, ‘mizzling’ to rain, and ‘kilter and rammel’, to mean rubbish, although I have heard the word ‘rammel’ in South Yorkshire to mean the same thing. The advice given by Tour de France organisers in Yorkshire has come in for some real criticism from professional Yorkshire men. Retired politician Lord Roy Hattersley, very much a son of Sheffield, said the steelworkers of yesteryear called each other ‘luv’, and it never seemed to be a problem, whereas broadcaster Michael Parkinson said that it was a load of twaddle and that proud Yorkshire folk should turn their backs on the Tour de France riders as they go past! I think that’s a bit harsh! I just think we should all shout as one man (or woman) when the cyclists go past: “COME ON LUV!”

The Army’s Titan force!

REMEMBER Titan, the Rottweiler who was adopted from the refuge and joined the Spanish Army not long ago?

Well, here he is with his new friends, and they are absolutely delighted with his progress. He is now an extremely happy dog and enjoying his life in the Army. Meet Minnie, aptly named and another victim on the streets, who arrived at the refuge really thin and unwanted, with no microchip. Once her 21 days here are over, she will belong to Accion del Sol

legally and will be looking for a new home. Again, we can only stress the importance of micro-chipping your beloved pet and ensur-

ing the correct data is given when changes in address or phone numbers occur. Let’s hope Minnie finds a new home soon, along

with the other 200 or so dogs at the refuge. Our summer bash takes place next Sunday (6th July) at the refuge, starting at 2pm. It will be a fun-filled day, with swimming pools for the children and the dogs. So don’t forget swimwear and a towel. There’s also Latin and Flamenco dancing, a fun dog-agility competition with your beloved pet (or borrow one of ours!). There will also be a BBQ and cake stall selling much tempting fayre, and you will also get the chance to tour this 5-star refuge. Accion del Sol staff are busy planning

their summer holiday programme. The first course will run from 28th July to 1st August, followed by another from 4-8th August. The hours are from 8am-4pm and the refuge is open to children aged 6-10 years. For more information, and to reserve your child’s place, please call 922 778 630. The closing date for enrolling your child is 15th July. The children will be involved in many educational and fun-learning activities in a good, safe environment. Please call 922 778 630 for more information or if you would like to help out in any way at the refuge.

Sorrowful farewell six-month boom for Father Pedro Universal’s

FOLLOWING an upturn in market trends, the Tenerife property scene is more buoyant than it has been for some years.

It has led to more families coming to the Island or, in some cases, leaving it for pastures new. Naturally, it follows that once a property is re-sold, the existing occupiers will be moving out and the buyers moving in. It is not unusual for Universal Exports to carry out the removal for both parties in such a deal. And recent moves have included shipments to Tenerife from Poland, Belgium, Sweden mainland Spain, the US and, of course, the UK. In fact, Universal Exports has celebrated a

bumper first half of the year. The company offers either a full container load (FCL) or shared load (groupage) service either to or from any country in the world. And it has its own regular container service operating between Tenerife and the UK in both directions. With over 20 years’ experience in the business, and offices in Tenerife and the UK, Universal Exports is best-placed to offer you a fully-professional removal service, tailored for your own specific needs. So when you need to move home, whether across the globe or just around the corner, give Universal Exports a call on 922 720 711, email info@removals-tenerife. com or check its website: www.removals-tenerife.com

THE departure of Father Pedro from San Blas Church on Sunday signalled the end of a golden era for local Roman Catholics.

The much-loved parish priest, from Stuttgart, Germany, who has been at the Golf del Sur church for 14 years, has been ordered back to his previous church in Leon, North-West Spain, by Bishop Bernardo Álvarez Afonso. He had served as parish priest there for 33 years before coming to the Island as part of the San Isidro parish. It came as a shock to the priest because he loves Tenerife and its people, whatever the nationality. And because he is 76 years old! It was also a shock for his parishioners, who assumed he would complete his colourful career in Tenerife, his powerful tenor voice shaking the very foundations of the church as he led the hymn-singing. Father Pedro (Peter Speidel), who was at-

tached to the San Isidro parish church, heard Mass at San Blas and Los Abrigos every Sunday. And always, with a twinkle in his eye. He has the capacity to unearth unknown hymns, and he brought big grins all round when, while attempting to teach a new tune before the service started, he would often forget it himself. He also injected funny little stories into his sermons, which left the congregation in fits of laughter. Above all, though, he leaves a wonderful legacy because, apart from building up the congregation over the years (standing room only during the winter),

he has overseen a complete renovation of the church’s interior furniture. Where once there were rows of plain chairs for worshippers with nowhere to kneel, there are now first-class pews, courtesy of San Miguel Town Hall, whose carpenters built them. They also constructed a new altar and a pulpit to bring the little church right up to date. And Father Peter has a certain fund-raising way, which has brought thousands of euros into the church for necessary repairs - and a brandnew organ. The church was riddled with woodworm last year, and the parish priest needed 4,000

euros to cure the complaint. It seemed an impossible task, but the Irish swallows came to the rescue. He had his money within a couple of weeks, and the work was carried out. There will be more sorrow at the church this winter when the Irish contingent return because most, if not all, will be unaware of his departure. Monica Biggs, who has a holiday home in Las Chafiras and describes herself as a “semi-swallow”, said: “He is much loved and many will be very sad to see him go after so many years. There must be many swallows and visitors who will be upset, too.” There was small presentation to Father Pedro after his last San Blas Mass on Sunday, after which he told the congregation: “I am sorry to go, but I have had a lovely time. And I hope you have, too. God bless you all.” With that he walked up and down the aisle, shaking hands with everyone, before racing over the Los Abrigos to fulfil his final obligation there.

By Sue McDonald NOW, before you think, “I couldn’t do that”, you can actually make all the style choices to ensure the sofa is exactly what you want.

For example, we had clients who wanted two

27th June 2014 - 3rd July 2014

You can design your own sofa! three-seater sofas for their large living room. They both like to watch the TV lying down, I suppose! That doesn’t sound too difficult, but most shops sell sofas in sets of a three-seater and a twoseater, and won’t break the sets up. Also, a lot of the furniture they had seen locally was not of the quality they wanted. Although we don’t have the shop now, we do have a small display area in our storage deposit, so the clients came there. We have a sofa bed

from our main manufacturer (here in Tenerife) on display, with removable arms, so that you can try several styles. Obviously this demonstrates the standard of the work, and the comfort of the sofa itself, as well as the sofa bed mechanism, and the mattress. Now, a sofa is a sofa, right? Wrong! There’s a lot to take into account. For example, the first thing I ask people is: “How do you sit on the sofa?” A weird question, you might think. But I

like to sit with my legs tucked up, and leaning on the arm of the sofa to read. So my preference is for a padded square arm, of a comfortable height, for that all important leaning. Other people like to lie down on the sofa, so they might choose arms that are padded and slightly inclined, a bit like a pillow. Then there’s the back to think about. A lot of modern sofas have very low backs. But generally, English people are quite tall, and like highback sofas so they can lean their head back. As far as the seats are concerned, you can also choose the density of the foam, to make them slightly harder or softer to your liking. And for example, in a threeseater, you can have

three base and back cushions or only two. This doesn’t affect the size of the sofa but only the look of it. Exhausted? And we haven’t yet talked about the material and the colour, which can be chosen from our huge display. Our clients were able to make all of the above style choices. But on further discussion, we found out that the gentleman liked his current sofa because it was the only one he could really stretch out on. So his new sofa will be a bit longer than standard as well, fitting him and their lounge perfectly. Who knew it could be so complicated? However, it didn’t take us long to make all the decisions, and the clients

will end up with a sofa tailor made for them and their property. And for all these minor changes to the catalogue styles, there is no extra charge. After all, whether you work hard and you want to spend your precious free time chilling on the sofa, or if you don’t work, and you will spend lots of time relaxing and watching daytime TV, you want to be comfortable. Equally, if you are going to spend your hardearned cash on something, it should be exactly what you want. Your self-designed sofa can be made within 10 days to two weeks, and delivery is included in the price. And if there is still some life left in your old sofa (not literally, I hope), we can take it away for charity. So if you are thinking of buying a new sofa or sofa bed, give us a call and come have a go at building your own sofa! Or if you still love your old sofa but it is looking a bit tatty, why not consider getting that one recovered?

Climbing the walls - in evergreen style

OFTEN, in a garden or on a patio, there is an unsightly wall that spoils the look of your green space.

Well, this week, I thought I would share with you the plants and ideas which are brilliant wall coverings. The most dramatic wall-covering plant I have witnessed is the Ficus repens (aka Ficus pumila). Its common name is the Climbing or Creeping Fig. I have this plant growing on one of my garden walls, and I just love it. It is an evergreen climber, which has little tear-drop-shaped leaves. When you first plant it, it is a fragilelooking, tiny-leafed plant that doesn’t look much at all, really. However, do not be fooled into buying 20 plants to cover a fourmetre wall because just five small (6in) ones will eventually cover it densely. The photo below shows one of my garden walls with a thick carpet of this plant, which continues to grow and must have regular haircuts. The plant clings to the wall with little suckerlike tendrils when young and soon, the foliage

starts to grow in size. The stem can become quite woody, and this layer then lies on top of the clinging layer below. This makes a thick hedge-like covering in which lizards and birds can make homes - also

providing them with a good source of insects, spiders and the like. One of the other photos shows it in its infancy (above), and you can see that there’s almost no resemblance between the two stages of

the plant. And the third picture is a close-up of the leaves. It grows rampant in any soil and loves the sun, especially once established. In the early months, make sure it is watered at the roots and not on the foliage, because this can encourage the leaves to burn. It does produce fruit, which is said to be edible (in Asia), but there is a process that needs to be followed to make them edible. And, unlike Ficus carica, (Common Fig), which is a pick-and-eat type of fruit, this most certainly is not. But it is a really good wall-covering plant and that, for me, is its purpose. There is a variegated version of this plant but, like so many variegated plants, it takes a little longer to grow, and it can always revert to being an evergreen. Other climbers which can be used to change the appearance of a wall are, of course, last

week’s featured plant the Honeysuckle, and there is also Passionflower, Jasmine and the likes. But for an evergreen plant that grows so densely and creates a hedge-like appearance and softens and frames your garden space with nature - to my mind, there is no better plant than the Creeping Fig. On the building of Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club, the front is covered in Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Virginia Creeper, which, if not kept in check, will grow all over the building and beyond. This is a North American plant and will do well in our climate in the Canaries because it does not mind being in full sun. Its leaves are full of beautiful colours in Autumn - red to golds -and create a wonderful display. I have written about vertical gardening before. And, if you are interested, you can now buy modular, self-wa-

tering wall units at an affordable cost in the local garden centres to fix to a wall. They come with nine pockets to fill and have a click-and-add system, so at any time you can buy another nine-module system and it will click into your original one. Potentially, you could create a sizeable wall with a variety of individual plants on it. Instinctively, though, I feel it would be good for herbs, allowing each of them to trail into each other. And, being a selfwatering system, you will not need to worry about wetting the wall behind, or endure the floods of water that wall-planters tend to leave behind. In a small garden space, vertical planting would be an excellent idea to enlarge your area and provide more planting opportunities without taking up valuable space. So don’t forget about your walls as potential hosts for plants … they love it!

Motoring

By Jav TOYOTA’S second-wave Aygo, scheduled for release on Tuesday (1st July), impresses on many levels, and the company have stuck to what customers want.

The tiny city car, produced in partnership with Peugeot Citroën, was launched in 2005 and has been endlessly refreshed ever since. They have introduced personalisation to what could be a mundane purchase - and enhanced the Aygo’s driving manners and refinement levels with this second-generation model. It means that buyers can choose alternative colours for the front X grille and its continuing wing flashes. There are also contrasting colours for the side sills, front valance, rear lower bumper, some interior trims and eight alloy wheel designs. It is a clever idea and helps raise Aygo’s profile against its rivals. And it is sure to appeal to those buying a first car for a son or daughter - a popular, traditional customer for the Aygo. Things are also kept simple under the bon-

27th June 2014 - 3rd July 2014

I go for Aygo to score net. There is just a single choice of engine, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit with 68bhp that’s enough to get the baby Toyota from 0 to 60mph in 14.2secs, and on to an eventual 99mph top speed. The average fuel economy is a decent 68.9mpg, while emissions start from as low as 95g/km. In fact, away from the spec levels and those customisation measures, the only real options are between a three and five-door body-style (there’s a £400 difference between the two) and a manual or automatic gearbox. Given that the automatic, called x-shift, is actually an automated manual with no clutch pedal, rather than a full proper auto, its £700 premium seems steep. But, the Aygo acquits itself well on the road. The three-cylinder engine has a lovely off-beat throb to it and always seems keen to rev and be worked hard. Not that you will often feel the need to. In fact the Aygo also represents the change in attitudes perfectly towards small city cars. With an impressive 760,000 sales across Europe in the past nine years, Toyota have successfully kept the appeal of the Aygo fresh and relevant. They have achieved this with continual updates and special-edition models in the light of

increased competition. The result is that Aygo enjoyed its best-ever year of UK sales in 2013, and Toyota hope to retain that success with this latest, eye-catching tiddler. It might still be a bit functional to be a car you “fall in love with”, as the Japanese firm’s chief

engineer claims was his aim. But compared with the more sober Peugeot and Citroen, this is the best-looking motor of the trio. Toyota’s light weight means that it feels nippy enough up to 30mph on urban roads, and it rarely feels as slow as its on-paper figures suggest.

The only frustrations come on faster roads, which are hardly the Aygo’s natural habitat, and it can feel a bit susceptible to side winds. Also, you need to keep your wits about you to keep up with other traffic and avoid getting caught in the wrong gear on inclines.

That apart, the refinement levels are easily on a par with any of its rivals, with an excellent ride quality in particular, even though stop-start isn’t even offered as an option in the UK, as it is on mainland Europe. Inside the cabin proves to be surprisingly comfortable. In the front, there’s plenty of head and leg room, and the excellent seats are extremely supportive. That’s not always the case at this level, although adults of average height might feel restricted in the rear seats. That cramped feeling is exacerbated by the popout rear windows in the back, rather than traditional lowering ones. The mix of interior plastics and materials works well, even if some of the gloss surfaces will not be to everyone’s taste, while the touchscreen is reasonably intuitive and with good build quality. The only major anomaly is the rev counter on the side of the main instrument binnacle which, with its bright orange graphics, is entirely at odds with the rest of the interior. There’s a slightly larger boot, but at 168 litres it will take just a few full shopping bags. Prices range from £8,595 to £12,395, which is in keeping with the cost of their rival city cars. Good fun all round, except for those cramped rear seats.

Tráfico by appointment only now By Emma at Motorworld

TRÁFICO will be dealing with their paperwork by prior appointment only from now on.

With the new system starting here and in the Balearics, it means that all 66 Tráfico offices are adopting the same rule. This system has been tried and tested in Madrid and Barcelona, and it will even affect La Gomera and

El Hierro, who do not have Tráfico offices. Appointments can be made via www.dgt.es, the Tráfico website or via telephone on 060. If the appointment is made online, you have the option to choose the date and time, up to 15 days in advance. The system has been working well in other Tráfico offices and is proven to save time and stop the offices getting busy during certain hot-spot periods. It also helps the staff know what the required procedure is for each individual. The online appointment system is easy to use and is more suit-

able than using the telephone because you cannot choose a time or date over the phone; the first available appointment is given. To access the appointment system, you need to go to Tráfico’s website www.dgt.es and click on the icon which says CITA PREVIA (appointment). The icon also shows a computer and a telephone. From there, you will need to choose the option SOLICTIAR CITA PREVIA EN JEFATURAS (request appointment in the office) at the bottom of the page. The next step is to choose the correct office, which is Santa

Cruz de Tenerife. After that, you will have to select what area you wish to make the appointment, with either fines or “other”. The “other” option covers drivers’ licences and car paperwork. Once you have selected the area, you fill in your personal details and choose the date and time you wish to go. Appointments can be made up to 15 days in advance. Once the appointment has been reserved, you will then be given the option to save or print a confirmation. You can also modify or cancel any appointments online, but only

two appointments can be made in any one day for any individual or representative. Registered professional businesses remain unaffected by the changes in law. On your appointment day, you still need to go via information to collect a number to pay your fees, and then be sent to the correct counter for your appointment - you cannot just go to the counters. The introduction of the appointment system does not change the processes or documentation required for each individual process. The main change is that it should make a

trip to Tráfico quicker, provided you take the correct paperwork. Otherwise, an alternative appointment for another day will have to be made. Until now, when you could collect what you were missing and pop back in to complete the paperwork the same day, this could mean several trips. The press release information is also available on Tráfico’s website, but it is limited to what I have already pointed out. If you have any questions, just give me a ring on 922 783 828 or send me an email to emma@motorworldtenerife.com

Shame on you!

By Roscoe

Las Palmas 1 Cordoba 1 LAST Sunday, Las Palmas were just 10 seconds away from rubbing shoulders with Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga.

Their 12-year wait for top-flight football looked over after Apoño’s 48thminute goal, the only one of the tie, had given them a deserved lead. The Gran Canarians had played better than their plucky visitors over the two legs, and a place in the promised land appeared theirs. Then, in the second minute of three addition minutes at the end, fans mistook the whistle blown for a foul, as the one ending the match. Hundreds streamed on to the pitch, even though it was obviously not the end of the contest. A “Lemming” mentality followed as more and more fans poured on to the pitch. Referee Jose Sanchez had no choice but to take the players off as police and security tried to usher the fans back into the stands. You can only imagine what was going through the heads of the players. Eventually, the pitch was cleared, the players warmed up and play resumed. But the break had led to additional time and, with just seconds remaining, Cordoba launched one last “Hail Mary” effort. The deep cross into the box found a Cordoba shirt, but the shot was soft. Keeper Mariano Barbosa would surely deal with it? As regular readers

know, I think he is a clown and the team’s weak link, so it was no surprise that he could only parry the shot towards Ulises Davila. The Mexican will never tap in a more important goal! There were only a few Cordoba fans among the impressive 31,240-strong crowd, and they probably heard the roar from Tenerife as the ball hit the net. Players from both sides collapsed to the turf, obviously for different reasons, and then the fun began. The ref blew the fulltime whistle and Cordoba, managed by former Tenerife, Barcelona and Chelsea defender Albert Ferrer, were back in the top flight for the first time since 1972. And the home fans couldn’t take it. As the Cordoba players celebrated, the home fans invaded the pitch. Similar in number to the first invasion, the mood this time was completely

different. Some of the “fans” tried to assault the Cordoba players as stewards and police tried in vain to quell the problem. Players raced down the tunnel and some fans tried to join them. Some remained in the stands and threw chairs, bottles and whatever they could find. The atmosphere resembled a bear pit. On the pitch, so-called “fans” continued to misbehave. In the stands there were tears, jeers and blank expressions. How had that happened? And all the chaos was beamed nationally via Canal Plus. I’d like to think Tenerife fans would have handled themselves much better. It was some time before order was restored and, while the Cordoba players celebrated in the changing rooms (and what an achievement that was!), Las Palmas players were openly crying … struggling to ingest the final outcome.

The irony is as thick as molasses. If the crowd hadn’t invaded the pitch, Las Palmas would have won. It’s as simple as that. And I guess that is what will stick in the craw for the summer. But there is no excuse for the way these socalled fans behaved. You cannot assault players, and it will be interesting to see what sanctions the club now receives. There has been talk of six home matches either being played behind closed doors, or even at the Heliodoro in Santa Cruz. That option is madness. There will be a financial penalty and maybe even a points’ deduction. One report said the Las Palmas B team could be demoted and that, ironically, would see Tenerife’s B team replacing them in the third tier. The fall-out has begun, though, and manager Josico will not be staying on. He was given the job with just two matches of

the season to go, and has to be either the luckiest or unluckiest manager in history – depending on which way you look at it! Also, the chairman has said there will be no refreshments on sale next season. Quite how the munching of a stale cheese-and-ham roll or the gulping of a diet coke affects anything is beyond me. Back in Santa Cruz, plans for the new season are really starting to take shape. As reported last week, Vitolo has returned, and he has been joined by new goalkeeper Ivan Crespo. The 29-year-old has inked a two-year deal and he will almost certainly become the new first-choice cat. He joins on a free from Alaves, where he had a successful two seasons. Crespo was in fine form at the end of the last campaign and looks a shrewd signing. Important right-back Javi Moyano has re-

signed for another two years, as has goalie Roberto. The club hopes to announce a new striker in the next few days, and it looks like it will be an old boy. Tenerife legend Nino nearly returned in January, and it’s understood that the club has made him an offer. Angel is also on the radar. He is a free agent and has been linked with a move to Rayo Vallecano, in La Liga. But there have been reports that he favours a move home, and Tenerife are in contact. As we revealed here in April, Chechu Flores has agreed a severance package. The 34-year arrived in August 2011 from Girona and did a remarkable job. He was magnificent in the two Segunda B seasons and played 84 matches in total. His departure means that only Aridane remains from the 2011-12 roster. Chechu has left, along with Aday, who had a frustrating season. Injuries didn’t help, and there is no doubt we didn’t see the best of the winger. He was excellent for L’Hospitalet, and I’m sure he will find a good home somewhere. They have joined a few players who have moved on. Keeper Diego Rivas has gone back to Elche, Inigo Ros has joined the CDT old boys’ network at Cadiz, Luismi Loro is at Real Oviedo, while centre-backs Baltasar Rigo and Bruno are in between clubs, along with striker Borja Perez. And, after a disappointing loan spell, Edgar has returned to Almería in La Liga. Finally, CD Tenerife’s annual presentation match, the last preseason fixture, will be at home to Elche. The La Liga club has close ties to Santa Cruz and will visit the Heliodoro on 16th or 17th August.

Maximum-men Tom and Harry!

HE was once described among our darting fraternity as the future of this League.

Well, maybe the future has arrived! Tom, of Bar 180 A, has flown out of the blocks this season, playing the darts of which we know he is capable. Tom hit his fifth and sixth maximums of

the campaign during his team’s hardfought victory over The Pub. Over in Los Abrigos, a cracking match unfolded as Phoenix Bar entertained leaders Target Army. With a brilliant 144 check-out from Brian, the Army were never led by Phoenix and, at 4-2 up, really should have won. But step forward League Chairman Harry. A maximum, and a

fine 72 finish to claim the second doubles rubber, sent the match down to the trebles leg and a 4-4 draw. Target Titans’ 5-3 home win was notable because it included a 150 finish from visiting Bar 180 B’s Tony. That’s the highest this season and will net him 150 euros from sponsors, Direct Telecom. Unless someone beats it, of course! A round of applause

please for Division 2 outfit Trap Door … they actually played a match! That’s good news because it keeps this section on an even keel. But it wasn’t good news for the team they played, however. Despite a 180 by Nick, Emerald Lounge lost 5-3. Leaders Gaffers A enjoyed a comfortable 6-2 success over Naughty Nautas, while a 7-1

thumping of La Caña Lancers rocketed the Playboys from seventh to second place. Pas O Nadas took the last game to tie with Emerald Shamrocks, and Chipeque did likewise to square their match at Sundowners. Chipeque Chippers continue to lead the way in Division 2, courtesy of a 7-1 thrashing of Barracuda Hunters. Waterfall’s walkover from Amistad 2 puts

them in second spot, while The Rebels’ seven-point haul at the Playgirls sees them nicely into third. Marilyns’ decent start came off the rails somewhat as they slumped to a 5-3 home defeat against Phoenix Flights. Elsewhere, it was Palms v Palms in Torviscas Alto. And visiting Palms Pool Bar took six points from Palms Sports Bar.

CD Tenerife sign up Adeje!

ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and CD Tenerife President Miguel Concepción Cáceres signed an agreement on Tuesday to develop a series of football initiatives in the municipality.

It will complement other joint projects and, together, will form the basis for a number of activities within the sport, starting next season. The Mayor said: “This is an important agreement which serves to regularise the relationship between CD Tenerife and the Council.

“It’s not new - we have had a joint history with the club, which has brought positive results. This agreement will now work to help

football clubs at basic levels and, of course, those who play.” He added: “Here in the Council, we will continue to work for the sport,

which we recognise as the backbone of co-existence, and of personal development in the community.” Cáceres believes that

through this agreement, they could “bring the club closer to the other parts of Tenerife (outside the capital), which is vitally important. And with this kind of agreement, we can work with those starting out in the sport”. The CDT chief is sure that in a few years, his club will be welcoming, “with open arms”, many young players who will have come through what he described as Adeje’s excellent football school. The primary objective of the deal will be to co-ordinate the work of the local administration and the club through training programmes. And, of course, the promotion of football activities within the cat-

egories taught by Adeje’s Municipal School of Football. At the same time, the collaboration will serve to assist in the promotion of players in Adeje, as well as publicising the activities of CD Tenerife in the town through sporting events, workshops, training days, sports campus, etc. The agreement also allows the use of the corporate image of both parties, as well as sporting installations and municipal zones needed for the development of training and assessment activities in football. Both parties may also seek funding, grants and assistance from third parties, private and/or public for all the various activities.

Hammers are pure class and it doesn’t half show!

THIS week saw the final few games of the Direct Telecom Pool League 2013/14 season and draws a curtain on Division Two.

Palms B were crowned champions. last week and Inn the Pink B took the runners-up spot, with James Place finishing a fine season in third place. So now we have finished, what does the end-of-season school report look like? In Division One, Tenerife Hammers A were top of the class again, taking the title by seven points. New boy Paul added steel to an alreadyformidable team and he was unlucky not to top the player rankings, coming in a respectable third overall. Will Fritzel leave the team as they are for next season, or does he feel he needs an extra player? Gaffers A were this year’s runners-up, but they gave it a good go, the results in the matches against Hammers A being the defining factor in the battle. Neil will be pleased with himself, though, as he topped the player rankings ahead of Jambo. And the word on the street is that Gaffers have done their transfer business early as they aim to topple Hammers A. Phoenix Knights claimed third spot with a good run in the second half of the season, but they were 32 points off the pace of the front two.

If they had started well they may have been closer, and that is something to concentrate on for next season. Dreamers A were another team who started shakily. They went nine matches without a win, but found some second-half form. They will be pleased with fourth spot. Werther’s Originalinspired Phoenix Potters were good value for fifth place, but they may be concerned that an age cap is being put in place for next season and they might have to join a veteran’s league! Inn the Pink A were competitive all season and will be happy with their final position, as will all the other teams as they all look forward to weddingreception style buffets next season. Palms A flattered to deceive, but they never really had a regular line-up every week, and that maybe cost them. The question is, though, has Captain Roscoe settled his bet with Geoff from the Phoenix for the player rankings? Of the rest, Bar La Caña A put up a good

They were in the top three until Christmas but dropped off the pace in 2014. Exiles A will look to improve after their first season in the top flight, as will the Peacocks and Treehouse A, who were both involved in the relegation fight at the business end of the season. Tenerife Hammers C survived by the skin of their teeth, but they have got to be worried already about next season. They maybe need a new player or two. Terrace Bar A have gone down, along with Toscales A, and both teams are preparing for life in the Second Division.

But for the Terrace lads, will it be a spoon next season or something else? They will be back. The pool in Division Two this season was played to a high standard, and it wasn’t until the last month or so that teams at the top started to pull away. Palms B managed to finish top of the pile inspired to the title by the passing of their captain Michael “Eeyore” Shaw. They will look forward to dining at the top table next season, especially with a tasty Palms derby ahead of them. Talking of derbies, Inn the Pink B are also promoted as runnersup, and they will be joining their A team in the top league. Bar bragging rights are going to ensure that these games are tasty affairs. James Place, led by captain and talisman James, had a great season and will be happy with third place. Given the way they have played this season, they will fancy themselves next season for a crack at the title. The same applies to Exiles B and Terrace Bar B because both

They could have been real contenders had they played that well earlier in the season. I don’t believe either team will be worried about the teams coming down, especially the Terrace boys, who will be relishing taking on their A team. The two Bluebell teams had their moments this season and will be satisfied with top-10 finishes, while Kandi 13 will be looking forward to the new season. They finished like a train and will be targeting a promotion season. Gaffers B and Hoppys made up the top 10, and both are a handful on their day. There were only a couple of teams who really struggled this season, which simply demonstrates how strong this league has been. The remainder of the teams will be using the break to strengthen their squads. The points difference, the closeness of most of the games and the

experience will give them the belief that next season, they can come back and have a real go at breaking into the top 10. And who knows, maybe even higher! It has been a great season, played in a fantastic spirit and I know everybody is looking forward to the next one already. But don’t forget the cup finals are still to come. They will take place this Tuesday (1st July) at the Terrace Bar on Amarilla Golf. The Tenerife Pool Tables Cup Final will be contested by Tenerife Hammers A and Inn The Pink B, and the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate will be a battle between Treehouse A and Inn The Pink A. The matches start at 8.30pm, and you are all welcome to come down and show your support. World Cup review

By Adi Benson THE knockout stages are now upon us as we enter the final fortnight of the World Cup and, as an England fan, I should be writing this with a sense of optimism.

Instead, a black cloud sits above me as I lament on one of England’s poorest showings at an international tournament. Fingers can be pointed, blame can be apportioned. But at the end of the day, we were just not good enough. Roy Hodgson took a bold move by leaving behind experienced players and taking youngsters. I applauded him for this because I believed we had no chance of winning the World Cup and was happy for the younger players to gain bigtournament experience. This, in essence, should stand us in good stead for Euro 2016. In the cold light of day, we were beaten by Italy, Euro 2012 finalists, ranked 9th in the world, and then we went down against Uruguay, third in the 2010 World Cup and ranked seventh in the world at a time when we were 10th. Where is the shame in marginally losing to two better teams? Okay, our performance against Italy showed promise, yet against Uruguay we were poor defensively. But for the younger players, lessons will be learnt and experience gained. It was unfortunate that by the time Costa Rica came around we were already out. However, it gave Roy a chance to tinker with the team and blood other squad players, those who will start the Euro 2016 qualifying games come September. And there are some real gems among them. I believe it is time for Gerrard and Lampard to hang up their international boots and, possibly, Rooney will now take more of a back

We just weren’t good enough to go through

seat. He has proved again that, for whatever reason, he just cannot play on the big stage. I have seen and read many comments, and they all point to no passion, wrong tactics, not singing the National Anthem loud enough and earning too much money. But as I said earlier, and I will say it again, we are out of the World Cup because we were just not good enough. Plain and simple! Now let’s see what we have to look forward to in the last 16 in Brazil. Brazil v Chile As expected, Brazil topped their qualifying group, but over the first two matches they looked out of sorts. Fortunately, Neymar is in fine form, but can he carry them all the way? Looking at the team, the defence on paper should be excellent but looks suspect, as does the keeper. And that will end up costing them. Chile, on the other hand, have been flying, Holland result aside, and they will present a big problem to the hosts. They are quick and have some great attacking players, and I can see them bagging a big scalp in this game. Columbia v Uruguay Columbia didn’t have a difficult time getting through from Group C and looked impressive, with three wins out of three. The big tests start for them now, and a game against fellow South Americans is going to be

difficult as both teams are used to the conditions. But play the way they did in the previous games and they should progress. After their first game against Costa Rica, Uruguay will feel lucky to have progressed; it was probably more down to the poor form of England and Italy. Let’s not get into the whole “bite” issue, but it looks like Suarez will get the ban he deserves - and this is as far as Uruguay will go. Holland v Mexico What a start the Dutch made. I expected them to beat Spain, but not by a 5-1 scoreline. After that, expectations were high, but a stuttering performance against Australia followed. However, they got the job done and then secured their third win against Chile and are currently top scorers. The difference has been

the quality they can bring off the bench, and I feel Mexico will be no match. The Mexicans will be happy to be here, and they play with real pace. But Holland nullified that against Chile and will do so again here. Time for the Mexicans to give us a wave! Costa Rica v Greece The Costa Ricans’ confidence must be sky-high: group winners when they were expected to finish bottom. They will now feel they can take anybody on, and they could be a real surprise package, they play as a team and are not reliant on individuals. And this has stood them in good stead Not entirely sure how Greece are in the last 16, but that’s been the World Cup for you this year. They have not looked convincing in any of the group games and I cannot see that

changing here. The Costa Ricans will be too strong for them and this could be a real hiding. France v Nigeria Not a lot was expected from the French this time around, but they have settled in nicely and have been one of the teams I’ve enjoyed watching: easy on the eye with some great attacking play and welltaken goals. Benzema looks a cut above most of the other strikers and, if his form continues, France could go far. They’re certainly not the disjointed team of past tournaments and look a real threat. Nigeria have flattered to deceive, but they have given us one of the best games of the tournament against Argentina. They gave it a real go and with more composed finishing, could have snatched a draw. They are fit and are France’s first real test. but I feel they will come up short in front of goal. Argentina v Switzerland It seems that Messi is on a one-man mission to win the World Cup, just like Maradona did all those years ago. A lot had been written about his international form, but Argentina could be on their way home without his goals, and great goals they have been. But now it gets serious, and his teammates need to step up to the plate because if

he has one bad game, that could be it. Switzerland always looked destined to progress to the knockout round, but they are another team who have struggled. This is a massive game for them, but every player will have to be at the top of his game for them to go any further. And they need to mark Messi out of the game and make sure they take their chances when they come. At the time of going to print last night, there were still two groups to be decided, so we don’t yet know the line-up for the two final last-16 matches. Looking at the groups, though, I fancy Germany and the US to progress in Group G. Both teams need a point only, and the draw looks inevitable, Ghana and Portugal could both still go through, but they both need wins and goals. In group H, Belgium will top the group and will easily get a point from South Korea, who are already out. And I believe they will be joined by Algeria. They are playing with confidence and Russia have looked nothing special, so again I feel they will get the point they need. So my predictions for the final last-16 games are Germany v Algeria and Belgium v US. Let’s see how I get on!
