Airport walk-outs threaten chaos as sale angers unions

WITH tourist figures and airport arrivals at record levels, the last thing Tenerife needs is a summer of travel disruption.

But unless a late deal can be agreed, there will be a raft of staff walkouts at both airports over the next few weeks. And that will cause summer-holiday chaos. Staff unions are up in arms at the proposed sale of 49% of AENA, the national body in charge of airports and air navigation in Spain. Last week, AENA appointed a number of banks, including Banco Santander and BBVA, to begin the part-privatising process. The Spanish Government plans to sell 49% of AENA - the world’s biggest airports’ operator - and it is understood that 22% will

be sold to institutional investors and banks (thus, the involvement of BS and BBVA), and will then offer the rest to the public. This process, of course, was common in Britain in the Eighties. It would raise around 2.2 billion euros - a move which is not part of a plan to sell off the country’s silver to cover the national debt. AENA is over 11 billion euros in debt, and the idea is that a part-privatised company would be better run. This would see the company reorganised into a leaner, fighting machine in an effort to return the company to the black. AENA already owns 46 airports, both in Spain and around the world. These include Luton, but just 13 of its Spanish airports were profitable last year. These include Madrid, Barcelona and both Tenerife airports. A raft of cost-cutting

measures and staff redundancies in 2011 helped AENA turn in a near-600m-euro profit in 2013, and unions fear a similar round of job losses and pay cuts if the part-sale goes through. In a statement, representatives from the Tenerife North and South unions claim the sales decision is unlawful under “the Royal DecreeLaw 8/2014 of 4th July and Paper Aviation Regulation (DORA)”. They claim that these laws prevent the state from selling a stake and breaking up the network. They also say that such a move will compromise the airports’ functions and services. The unions say that this sale will “lead to the state and the public bowing to another voice and that, ultimately, the state will lose control of the airport to private speculators and management, who will run the project solely with

their own economic benefit in mind”. They also state: “The breaking of the unity of AENA does not guarantee the future of the network, and it makes a public service into a private monopoly. “The reasons given by the Government for privatisation do not hold water.” The unions are calling for a full and open public debate on the subject. And they will call for immediate strike action if they do not get this promise. A meeting of unions has been called for Wednesday (13th Aug), and it seems they are in no mood to compromise. Ines Ferrer, President of the union at Tenerife North, has already said the union will not back down, and they want guarantees that the current deal with AENA, which runs until the end of 2016, remains in place. This was the compromise deal after the 2011

redundancies. And it seems that the dark mood of airport workers is not just confined to Tenerife. Workers at Adolfo Suárez MadridBarajas airport are already planning strike action next Friday and Sunday (15th and 17th ) August. This will see a walkout of all general workers, check-in staff, safety crews, doctors, firefighters and such. Alonso Muñoz, CGT union delegate at Barajas, said this was the tip of the iceberg, “There will be similar protests in more than 15 airports in the network at different times,” he added. “This will include Pamplona, Malaga, Costa del Sol, Ibiza and San Sebastian, among others. “We hope there is a general strike nationwide later this month.” It is understood that the unions here have pencilled in 27th and 30th of August for the

first strike days. The union has said it will co-ordinate with companies who are affected by the sale of AENA. It’s believed as many as 6,500 companies are directly linked to Madrid airport alone and the Unions feel a wider protest will bear fruit. The long-term effects of a summer of strikes could be devastating. On the mainland, there are already problems with strikes on the rail service. And with Spain’s economy in recovery mode, the last thing it needs is a jolt to the country’s biggest source of income. Spain is the world’s third-biggest tourist destination behind America and France. And AENA is the biggest airport operator in the world in terms of passengers. Last year, the company handled over 187 million travellers.

Jubilant Prime Minister has good news galore

Rajoy: We’re right back in the picture SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy believes the good times are coming back!

“Spain can now see healthy and diversified growth taking place,” he told a packed press conference in Madrid. “There is now a price stability and increased competitiveness in the business sector - and this is here to stay.” Figures from the first half of 2014 have “indubitably” confirmed that the recovery is gathering pace. Rajoy pointed to various figures. For example, the risk premium stands at 135 basis points, and the interest on the 10-year bond stands at 2.52%. In other words, “at a level not seen in the recent history of Spain”. It is even more radiant when you consider that this figure was an eyewatering 7% just two years ago. The Prime Minister believes Spain has recovered the market confidence which had been lost, and has shown that this country is meeting its commitments scrupulously. He also highlighted that Spain has started to repay the loan from the European Union to recapitalise those financial institutions which needed funding. The reputation gained, according to the PM, has significantly reduced the amount to service Spain’s debts. This allows the country to allocate these funds to other means, such as improving the liquidity of the regional governments to help contribute towards improving essential public services, with more than four billion euros. Rajoy also said consumer confidence had improved by 27 points, demonstrating that “the Spanish people are starting to clearly no-

tice the improvement”. The Prime Minister recalled that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 0.6% in the last quarter, And he confirmed that the General State Budget, to be presented in the second half of September, will include an upward revision of the economic growth because the current 1.2% forecast falls short of the reality. But it will not exceed 1.5%, as announced on Tuesday by Luis de Guindos, Minister for Economic Affairs and Competition. Rajoy also pointed out that in less than two years, the Spanish economy has gone “from being an economy on the verge of requiring a bailout, to being one of the European economies enjoying the highest growth”. He also highlighted that unemployment was increasing at a rate of 12% before the approval of the labour reform. But now, according to data from the latest Active Employment Survey (EPA), it is falling at a rate of 7.5%. “The

Government will also make a downward adjustment to unemployment forecasts,” said a buoyant Rajoy. The PM underlined that net employment has been created for the first time in six years and “the largest fall in unemployment since records began” has taken place. He added: “There are 400,000 more people in work, the best figure in the last nine years. And 180,000 permanent employment contracts have been recorded the best figure in the last seven years.” The youth employment scene is also looking up, with 101,194 fewer jobless than when his party came to power. “Never in the history of our country has economic growth translated so directly and quickly to employment,” he stressed. According to Rajoy, these figures, together with others, such as inflation, tourism, household debt reduction, increased retail and automobile sales, show that “recovery is firm and

gathering momentum. “This is neither an illusion nor false optimism, but rather that we are on firm ground.” He reiterated that the recovery “is here to stay”, as confirmed by data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The PM acknowledged that the effects of the new situation have still not filtered down to everybody, but said that these people have “a well-founded right of expectation”. He also maintained that this recovery has not happened by chance or by good fortune, but is the result of the Government’s economic policy and the “hard work and tenacity of the Spanish people as a whole”. Rajoy also argued that the crisis has been tackled without leaving the weakest unprotected, having maintained pensions. He said: “The average retirement pension in Spain has exceeded

1,000 euros for the first time, and we continue to have universal, public and free healthcare.” When asked about the referendum on sovereignty in Catalonia, the Government leader recalled the words of Arthur Mas, President of the Regional Government of Catalonia, “that he will do nothing unlawful”. At the meeting held with Artur Mas this week, Rajoy said he had conveyed to him that “dialogue is needed as well as legality”, and the referendum, as well as being illegal, is “bad, negative, prejudicial and will make both Catalonia and the rest of Spain worse off”. In his opinion, it is key for the Spanish to enjoy “security and certainty”, and that everything which generates uncertainty and insecurity is bad for Spain as a whole. As regards the meeting also held this week with Pedro Sánchez, General Secretary of the PSOE, the PM said that agreement between the Government and the main

opposition party is essential on certain issues such as the State model, European affairs and defence policy. Regarding the cases of corruption affecting politicians, Raajoy said: “Justice works in our country and everyone is treated equally. “Our courts hand down their decisions and the rest of us must uphold these decisions. The political forces must do everything possible and more to avoid any repetition of corrupt behaviour.” He cited the reforms undertaken by his Government to do away with such evils, through the Transparency Act, the Statute on senior positions and the economic, fiscal and financial system for political parties. In terms of the cost of the Spanish banks’ bailout for people, Rajoy said there had been two options: maintaining them or letting them collapse. In the latter case, this would have been paid for by account holders, investment funds, pension plans, added to which the employees of these banks would have been made redundant. He argued that the alternative of making them viable has been cheaper and much better for the majority of people. In relation to the situation in Gaza, the President of the Government argued that the priority is “for a ceasefire that is respected” and for the events in the Gaza Strip to be brought to an end. “The international community must devote all its efforts to ending this terrible situation,” he said. Rajoy also expressed his conviction that the conflict will not be resolved until such time as a political solution is found, under which the two States can live in peace.

Telefonica owe it to Brazil

VOLATILE Latin American exchange rates has hit Telefonica hard in recent months.

Yet the Spanish telecoms giant is still able to report a small rise in net profit for the

second quarter of the year. Net profit rose 4.9% to 1.21 billion euros, mainly because of a change in tax accounting in Brazil, which contributes about onefifth of its revenues. But the company said foreign currency turmoil, especially depre-

ciations of the Brazilian real, Argentine peso and Venezuelan bolivar, had reduced revenue in the period. Operating income before depreciation and amortisation (debt repayments) fell by 15% against the same time last year to 4.13bn euros, while revenues

Blowing in the wind! THE Canary Islands’ renewable energy for wind farms will increase dramatically over the next few years.

Today, 7.6% of the Islands’ power comes from this source, and it will jump to 11% in 2016. And, says the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, it’s just the beginning. Officials are looking to increase the reliance on wind energy in the Archipelago, and a new power “auction” will be introduced. Similar plans are already in place for the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla - territories where, like the Canaries, energy production is much more expensive than in mainland Spain. The extra power cost for here was 38% higher that the mainland since 2009. Azero Enrique Rod-

riguez, President of the Renewable Energy Association Canaria (ACER) said: “This is good news - and news the industry has been awaiting for a long time. “We will be literally generating more power and, with the correct investment, we can really move this operation on. And the savings for the electrical system are great.” However, all is not sweetness and light. ACER has confirmed that there is no legislation in place for a tender process for the auction to produce the newly sourced electricity. Rodriguez said “We must have an open competition, but that has been found, legally, to be very complex. We don’t want it to hurt small and medium-size investors.” As it stands for the Canarian project, a process will begin on 15th Sep-

tember and entrepreneurs, companies and investors must submit their plans and requests inside two months. The Ministry is looking constantly at new ways to reduced the energy bills outside the mainland. The Canary Islands, along with Ceuta and Melilla, get State subsidies. But, naturally, the Government needs to reduce this significantly. The reliance on fossil fuels is something everyone is trying to end, and Tenerife Cabildo has long tried to source from other outlets. Francisca Luengo, from the Ministry of Employment, Industry and Commerce said: “The Canary Islands has an abundant wind resource that hasn’t properly been exploited. “It is possible to integrate a higher rate of renewable generation safety, and we should explore this to the full.”

dropped 12% to 12.73bn euros. In Spain, the domestic market, where the company in April began offering customers a mobile, internet and television bundle to woo back customers from lowcost rivals, revenues fell 16% to 1.34bn

euros, even though Telefonica added new customers. Company President Cesar Alierta said in a statement: “I would like to highlight the status of the business in Spain, “The radical transformation undertaken in recent years, and

the clear improvement in the economic conditions, resulted in a change of the business dynamics in the second quarter.” During the first half, net profit fell by 7.5% to 1.9bn euros, while revenues dropped by 13% to 24.96bn euros.

Canarian jobless tally drops again THERE was more good news on the jobs front as unemployment fell in the Canaries last month.

There were 1,637 fewer jobless people than in June - a slight decline of just 0.61% from the previous month.

It means there are officially 268,422 unemployed and registered with the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. However, the yearon-year date shows that the unemployment figures fell by 21,953 people over the same month of 2013, a drop of 7.56% in the

Archipelago. By sector, those who use to work in the service sector comprise the largest number of people without jobs, 195,158, while it’s literally hard work in construction, with 38,194 former workers still seeking jobs. Manufacturing (11,962) and agriculture (5.344) make up the grim to-

tals, while the number of registered applicants without previous employment increased by 741 people last month. Nationally, the unemployed figure fell 29,841, or 0.67%, and overall, there are 4.4 million unemployed. The foreign population in Spain reduced its

number of unemployed by 9,672, or 1.83%, and in total, unemployed immigrants added up to 518,566 in July. Canarian Government President Paulino Rivero, said on Wednesday that he was “hopeful” the unemployment data for July showed the recovery was continuing.

He added: “It is moving in a good direction, but we must keep working at the problem.” Rivero believes updating the tourism sector will help, saying: “As we progress and improve that sector, it should help create new job opportunities in the coming months.”

100 years on… and we still remember!

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Not quite Christmas, but it’s holiday time EVERY morning on my Oasis Fm breakfast show, I do a round-up of the day’s events in history.

Little things like famous battles, historical events, points of interest, celebrity birthdays and the famous number of shopping days until Christmas. Trust me, I love it when, in deepest February, you get accosted by someone moaning that I’ve pointed out there are “only” 327 shopping days until Christmas. “But I don’t want to know that as it depresses me,” is the common response. Brilliant! Well, today is the halfway point of summer and, like everyone, you’re probably wondering where the year has gone. For us here in the Canarian Weekly office, it means we have arrived at our summer holiday. We are having a welldeserved week off and we will be back, brighteyed n bushy-tailed in a fortnight.

And don’t worry. We are JUST having the week off and we WILL be back on the streets on 22nd August - unlike the claims of other “publications”. I honestly can’t wait to enjoy the week’s holiday here. Just think, thousands of people save up all year to spend thousands of pounds for something we wake up to every morning. Why should I spend a truck load of money to go somewhere that offers the same, and probably less, than what we have here? And have you seen how cheap the golf courses are at the moment? There really is so much to do: brilliant restaurants to enjoy, bars are bouncing and that’s after some great new daytime events to sample. Throw in a trip to the North and shopping in Santa Cruz, a preseason CD Tenerife game, a cheeky excursion … and I’m long overdue saying “hello” to those adorable dolphins. In fact, a week is not going to be enough!

COMMEMORATIONS took place across Europe on Monday to mark the centenary of the day Britain entered the First World War.

Some 37 million people were killed or injured in the conflict, which spanned 19141918, even though many thought it would be over in months. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a service in Liege to mark 100 years since Germany invaded Belgium at the start of World War One. The Royals were received by Belgium’s King Philippe at L’Abbaye Saint-Laurent. From there, they walked to the Counter Inter-allied Memorial for a service, during which Prince William gave a speech and spoke of the importance of reconciliation across Europe.

“We were enemies more than once in the last century, and today we are friends and allies,” he said. We salute those who gave us our freedom. We will remember them.” Among more than 50 heads of state joining them were French President Francois Hollander and German President Joachim Gluck. In the evening, William and Kate attended a special ceremony at Belgium’s St Symphorien Cemetery, outside the town of Mons, where solemn tributes to the fallen continued. It was just one of a series of events marking Britain’s entry into the Great War. Across the Channel, the Prince of Wales, dressed in the uniform of a British admiral of the fleet, attended a Service of Remembrance at Glasgow Cathedral, where the 1,400 invited guests included representatives of Commonwealth countries, senior mili-

tary figures and charities. He was joined by Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond, who all laid wreaths at the Cenotaph in George Square. Mr Cameron said outside Glasgow Cathedral that d the war “profoundly changed our world”. He added: “It is right to commemorate this because this event had a massive impact on every community, every family in our country. “It is also right to remember the outbreak of the war because so many young British people thought they were rallying to a cause of defending the right of a small country, Belgium, to exist, and the prevention of the domination of Europe by one power. “There are principles and thoughts that were in play at that time,

and they are worth remembering today as well.” In Folkestone, Prince Harry inspected a parade of troops marking the route taken by millions of young men, who marched through the Kent harbour town on their way to northern France and Belgium. For some, tragically, it was their last glimpse of British soil. The Prince also officially opened a Memorial Arch in dedication to the veterans of the Great War. On the other side of the globe, Australia and New Zealand marked the outbreak of the Great War with Prime Ministers Tony Abbott and John Key describing it as a conflict that shaped their nations as well. Throughout the day, people all over the UK were being urged to turn off their lights in exchange for a lit candle at 10pm for one hour to mark the moment Britain entered the war.

Ex-king my dad, says the waiter A WAITER has lodged a paternity suit against Juan Carlos, Spain’s recentlyabdicated king.

Alberto Sola Jimenez, now 58, has lodged it with the Supreme Court, in the belief that he is the illegitimate son of the former monarch, said a court spokeswoman. The suit was passed on to the Supreme Court on Tuesday by a lower court, where it had been under review following controversial new legal protections for the 76-year-old former king, who lost his total immunity when he quit the throne last month. Mr Jimenez, an adopted child, has claimed for years that his birth mother, the daughter of a well-known Barcelona banker, may have had an affair with the king - before he married Queen Sofia - which resulted in his birth. Juan Carlos’s former constitutional immunity thwarted two lawsuits in October 2012 by people claiming he fathered them before becoming king - one by Sola and another by 48-year-old Belgian housewife Ingrid Sartiau, who says her mother once told her the monarch was her father. Sola, who used to run a successful metal firm in Mexico and now works as a waiter in the village

of La Bisbal in northeastern Spain, appealed that verdict. Juan Carlos automatically lost the total immunity which he enjoyed during his 39-year reign when he abdicated on 18th June, leading lawmakers to rush in controversial new legal protections for the ageing, former monarch. Unlike his previous immunity, the new measures do not completely shield Juan Carlos. He must now answer to Spain’s highest court, the Supreme Court, which has a high threshold for evidence, giving him similar protection enjoyed by many high-ranking civil servants and politicians. Sola’s paternity suit is the first legal challenge to be filed against the former monarch at the Supreme Court since

he lost his total legal immunity. The court will now have to decide whether it accepts the suit or shelves it. Sola and Sartiau made headlines in Spain in 2012 when they teamed up and underwent DNA tests that showed there was a 91% chance that they had one parent in common. They sent a joint letter to the Spanish royal household to ask for recognition. After receiving no reply, they took their request for a paternity test to the courts. Sola said in a recent interview with The Sunday Times that all he wanted was recognition. “I’ve no choice now but to put pressure on him,” he said. “Every Spaniard has the right to know where he is from.”

LA’s golden future! THE so-called “Golden Mile.” in Las Americas, where more than 420 businesses are concentrated, is heading for a major redevelopment.

Confirmation came this week that 5.1million euros will be spent to make the central location a flagship area for Tenerife South. Some 660,000 euros will come from business owners as part of a public-private partnership. The rest of the in-

vestment will be shared - 50% from the Canarian Government and the rest from the Tenerife Cabildo and Arona Council. The green light for this project has been a personal commitment of Cabildo President Carlos Alonso. He is keen on this being the first of a number of Southern redevelopments, and he is pushing for closer funding links between the public and private sector. The project is at the final planning stage, and work should get underway next May. Arona Mayor José

Francisco Nino said: “This is an exciting development. We will create an independent commission to monitor the works to ensure that deadlines are met.” There are no exact details on the developments, but it is understood that there will be improvements to the road and the pedestrian pavements. Extra parking facilities and upgraded taxi ranks are in the offing. And there is a need to improve disabled facilities around the area - and for entry to commercial centres and taxi ranks.

Girl, 14, locked up as a Jihad suspect

A GIRL of 14, believed to be attempting to join Islamic extremists fighting in Iraq and Syria, was sent by a Spanish judge to a youth detention centre on Tuesday.

Police detained the girl and a 19-year-old woman on Saturday as they tried to enter Morocco, allegedly to join Islamic State, whose fighters have seized swathes of Iraq and Syria. They were held at the Beni Enzar border crossing in Melilla, which is one of two tiny Spanish territories on the north African coast. Both Melilla and the other Spanish city, Ceuta, share a border with Morocco. The Spanish authori-

ties released video footage showing the teenagers, both covered in black niqabs, being led away from a small propeller plane. They were each flanked by balaclava-clad security men. During a closed-door hearing, a juvenile court judge ordered the youngster, who cannot be identified because she is a minor, to enter a youth detention centre. The 19-year-old, Fauzia Allal Mohamed, was released provisionally, but prohibited from leaving Spain. Spain’s Interior Ministry said the pair, both Spanish citizens, were trying to enter Morocco “with the aim of contacting the network which would move them immediately to a conflict zone between Syria and Iraq”. The Ministry said in a statement on Monday announcing their arrest: “Their intention was to

join one of the cells of the terrorist organisation of the self-proclaimed Islamic State.” The Spanish Government has said it fears battle-hardened Islamist fighters returning to Spain from Syria and other conflict zones under the influence of AlQaeda-inspired groups, posing a threat of attacks. Spanish security forces have led at least three significant raids on Jihadist recruitment cells this year, making more than 20 arrests. This year, Spain marked the 10th anniversary of the Al-Qaeda-inspired bombing of four packed commuter trains in Madrid on 11th March, 2004, which killed 191 people. Since the train bombings, more than 470 suspected Islamic extremists have been arrested in Spain, according to the government.

Sperm bank coming soon! A NATIONAL sperm bank, planned for October, will meet increasing demands and shorten waiting times.

At least, that is the plan, and it will be run in conjunction with the National Gamete Donation Trust (NGDT) and Birmingham Women’s Hospital. The Department of Health says the service will benefit patients “both NHS and privately, of all ethnicities across the UK, including same-sex couples and single women”. The bank will be coordinated from Birmingham Women’s Hospital, and the two organisations have been awarded £77,000 by the DoH. The sperm bank, sited at the Birmingham hospital, will offer an NHS-based, fullyintegrated donor recruitment, screening

and banking centre for Britain. The aim is to reduce the number of patients putting themselves at risk by using non-regulated, sperm donation services. For the first time, those from ethnic minority backgrounds will be able to choose from a range of cultural- matched donors. There is a national shortage of sperm donors in the UK, especially in NHS clinics, according to the Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust. At present, some patients in need of donor sperm are faced with few options. And they find themselves on waiting lists and having to use unregulated providers. Some have even had to stop treatment altogether, but a DoH spokesman said: “The National Sperm Bank will benefit all patients who need these services.”

Russian tourists

stranded

MORE than 27,000 Russian tourists have been stranded abroad after the collapse of the fourth tour operator recently.

Labirint stopped operations on Saturday, leaving the Tourhelp service to find seats on flights chartered by other travel companies for stranded passengers. It the fourth Russian travel company to go bust in the past month, and the Ukraine crisis was blamed for a slump in bookings for Russians wanting to travel abroad. A drop in the value of the ruble has also affected the tour companies - it has fallen by 11% against the dollar since last September. Russian firms have been hit by sanctions imposed after the MH17 disaster, and Labirint said: “The negative po-

litical and economic situation has influenced the number of bookings.” A spokeswoman for Russia’s Federal Tourism Agency said: “We worry that this is only the beginning, and that there will be a domino effect.” Russia’s federal investigative service said is examining the closure of Labirint and another tour operator which failed last month over fraud allegations.

Sanctions by the EU have forced Aeroflot’s low-cost airline Dobrolet to suspend operations because of its flights to Crimea. Western leasing companies cancelled contracts for the carrier’s Boeing aircraft after the airline operated flights to the annexed peninsula. Yelena Yurchenko, Crimean Minister of Resorts and Tourism, said more than 1,000,000

tourists had visited the peninsula this year. Russia annexed the mainly-Russian-speaking Crimea in March, sparking sanctions from the EU and the US, which have been stepped up since the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on 17th July. All 298 people on board were killed when the plane came down over rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine.

CHRIS DENNING, a former BBC Radio 1 DJ, has admitted a string of historical sex offences against boys.

The 73-year-old pleaded guilty to 29 charges of abuse against boys aged between nine and 16, at Southwark Crown Court. He denied 12 further charges and will face a trial at the same London court beginning on 24th November. Denning, of Basildon

in Essex, was charged as part of Operation Yewtree, which was set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile sex-abuse scandal.

Denning was one of the original line-up on BBC Radio 1 when the station launched in 1967. He was also the first announcer heard

on BBC Two when the TV channel opened in 1964. He committed the offences between 1967 and 1984 - there are 26 counts of indecent assault and three of indecency with a child. Among the charges he denies include indecent assault, indecency with a child and more serious sexual offences. He was initially arrested by Yewtree detectives in June last year and was remanded in custody until his trial, which should last up to two weeks.

The company is joining a growing global campaign against the popular Asian delicacy. It said in a statement: “With the removal of shark fin as an ingredient, Melia contributes to the protection of the important role sharks have in maintaining balance in marine ecosystems. “As predators, sharks are a key species in the food chain, and also indicators of the health of our oceans. They eliminate the weakest prey, maintain balance with competitors, and guarantee the diversity of species.” Melia, which runs more than 350 hotels in 40 countries, making it one of the world’s largest hotel companies, said the ban on shark fins would also apply to all events held in its facilities. Shark fins are highly prized by many in Asia, especially in Hong Kong and China, where shark fin soup is served commonly at wedding ba quetsand corporate parties. Environmental activists have for years campaigned against sharkfinning, in which the

fins are sliced off sharks, often while they are alive, before the fish are thrown back into the ocean to die. They say it is cruel, and a threat to sea life and the preservation of the oceans, and has led to overfishing, with many shark species now considered endangered. Melia is the latest among a string of companies to boycott shark fin consumption in recent years, following lobbying by conservationists. The US-owned Marina Bay Sands casino in Singapore, part of Las Vegas gaming magnate Sheldon Adelson’s portfolio, announced in June it would stop serving shark fin at its restaurants. Thai Airways announced last week that it had stopped flying shark fin cargoes, bringing the carrier in line with a number of other Asian carriers, including Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific and Philippine Airlines. More than 70 million sharks are killed worldwide every year, with a majority of fins consumed in Chinese markets, according to environmental group WWF.

Egyptian curse strikes Sharm again

BRITISH holidaymakers needed intravenous drips after contracting a sickness bug at a four-star Egyptian resort.

Tourists used the TripAdvisor review website to vent their spleen after suffering bouts of diarrhoea, sickness and fever at the Coral Sea Waterworld in Sharm el Sheikh. One poster, Bristols, wrote: “Sickness and diarrhoea was rife

throughout the hotel, seven out of our party of nine were really poorly including myself. “I became ill on the second night and was unable to eat, drink, use the pools or waterpark for the whole holiday. “I had two drips, injections, antibiotics, tablets coming out of my ears.” Another, tim308, wrote: “Just as I was recovering from my illness, my wife was struck down with one far worse - sickness, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and

fever that continued for the duration of our holiday and is still not 100% now.” The resort of Sharm El-Sheikh is in the Red Sea resort, which is popular with British holidaymakers. A statement from First Choice Holidays said: “First Choice is aware of a small number of cases of sickness at the Coral Sea Water World, Egypt, with symptoms similar to a virus. “Reported cases of sickness have reduced,

and an independent health and safety consultant has been undertaking a thorough investigation in the resort, ensuring that the correct containment procedures are in place. “We would like to reassure customers that we closely auditing all the resorts to which we operate to ensure that health, hygiene and comfort levels are maintained.” But Rebecca R added: “By 3am on the Tuesday, went down with terrible diarrhoea, feeling sick and raging temperature. Spent the next few

days mainly lying on the bathroom floor. Never felt so ill.” Reports claim that staff at the resort were made to wear latex gloves after the sickness bug broke out, and that extra doctors were brought in to cope with the numbers of people becoming ill. Solicitors Simpson Millar are representing a group of up to 80 people who were ill at the resort. Nick Harris, head of international travel law at the firm, said: “At present, we are representing approximately 70-80 holiday makers who fell

ill with gastric infections, including Shigella, whilst on holiday at Coral Sea Waterworld in Egypt. “This figure is rising sharply, as we continue to receive calls from holiday-makers returning from the resort, complaining of vomiting, diarrhoea and painful stomach cramps. “This is a serious outbreak at a hotel supplied by the UK’s most prominent tour operators,” This outbreak is another blow for Sharm el Sheikh after the well publicised shark problems a few years ago.

Bank on Banco Santo now TROUBLED lender Banco Espirito Santo (BES) is set to be rescued by Portugal’s central bank.

The group will be split into two - a “good bank” with the healthy assets and a “bad bank” featuring the riskier ones. The good bank, to be called Novo Banco, will be loaned 4.9bn euros

(£3.9bn) from what is left of Portugal’s bailout fund. The move had been expected after BES reported a record loss of 3.6bn euros on Friday for the first half of the year. Since June, when concerns about the financial health of the company first came to light, its shares have plunged 89%. The company - Portugal’s largest listed lender - will be

delisted from the stock market on Monday, with shareholders set to lose almost all their investment, says the BBC’s Alison Roberts. And Carlos Cosa, Portugal’s central bank governor, said: “The plan carries no risk to public finances or taxpayers. “There was an urgent need to adopt a solution to guarantee the protection of deposits and assure the stabil-

ity of the banking system.” He added that Novo Banco would comprise the bank’s core business of taking deposits and lending to home-buyers and companies. The cash injection for Novo Banco comes from a so-far-unused part of Portugal’s bail-out fund from the EU and the International Monetary Fund. The idea is that Novo Banco will be run by the

“resolution fund” - set up as part of the eurozone’s banking reforms and funded by Portugal’s financial institutions. The bank will eventually be sold off, with the proceeds used to pay back the 4.9bn euro loan from the bailout fund. Vitor Bento, Novo Banco’s chief executive, said: “The key uncertainties hanging over the institution for some

time have now been removed. “Novo Banco is also taking with it a dedicated workforce, a strong customer focus and comprehensive banking services that help to drive the Portuguese economy.” Mr Bento was installed as chief executive of BES less than a month ago as part of a management reshuffle, designed to restore confidence in the bank.

Ecclestone’s £60m drive for freedom! BERNIE Ecclestone has agreed to pay £60m into a German court to end his “bribery” trial in Munich.

The Formula 1 chief’s offer on Tuesday was based on an existing provision in German law, and prosecutors accepted it. The 83-year-old billionaire, who has dominated motor racing for decades, went on trial in April, accused of paying a German banker £26m to ensure that a company he favoured could buy a stake in F1. But he denied wrongdoing. The ruling allowed him to walk free from the Munich district court, and he can continue running the sport. It also means Mr Ecclestone is found neither guilty nor innocent.

His personal wealth is estimated at £3bn and, if found guilty, he could have faced a 10-year jail term - and the end of his F1 career. A Bayern LB banker, Gerhard Gribkowsky, was allegedly paid by Mr Ecclestone to ensure the F1 stake was bought by a company that he favoured, so

that he would remain in charge of the sport. Gribkowsky was sentenced to 8½ years in prison in 2012 for accepting bribes. Mr Ecclestone says the payment was given to Gribkowsky after the banker threatened to make false claims about the F1 chief ’s tax status. Prosecutors

said Mr Ecclestone’s advanced age and other mitigating circumstances gave grounds to accept the £60m offer. Mr Ecclestone has attended most of the hearings, and arrived at the courthouse on Tuesday in a limousine, looking relaxed and accompanied by

his wife, Fabiana Flosi. Mr Ecclestone, who has dominated the F1 business for decades, was asked by Judge Peter Noll if he could raise the £60m. Mr Ecclestone replied “Yes”. When asked if the payment could be made within a week, his defence lawyer, Sven Thomas, said: “That’s do-able.” Court spokesperson Andrea Titz said: “The court did not consider a conviction overwhelmingly likely from the present point of view. “With this type of ending, there is no ruling on guilt or innocence of the defendant.” Under German law, defendants can “buy” termination of a trial in certain circumstances. The legal proviso exists in order to ease the burden on the courts, and to deal with cases

where reaching a judgment could prove difficult. Mr Ecclestone said before leaving Munich: “I was a bit of an idiot to do what I did to settle because it wasn’t with the judge - it was with the prosecutors, and they didn’t really have a case. “If I’d waited until October (when the trial was set to finish), I would have saved a lot of money. “But this now allows me to do what I do best, which is running F1.” Former Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusse r- S c h n a r r e n b e r g e r criticised use of the loophole in the case, saying it was “not just bad taste - it’s really insolent”. She added that it allowed rich people to go free, whereas the less well-heeled could face prison.

A Different View

By Mike Walsh THE optimist, it is said, believes the chocolate bar is going to be the same size as the packet. We know it!

There has been a revolution in retail packaging, the purpose of which is not to protect the contents but to fool the buyer. But why does shopping these days have to be a battle of wits between retailer and shopper? Retail therapy? You need therapeutic help after you have been shopping. Yet it never used to be like that. My most endearing memories are those of the Fifties and Sixties. No supermarkets then, but there were scores of shops, each a specialist in its own trade. The grocers, though far removed from today’s supermarkets, sold a wide choice of produce. You asked for whatever you wanted. It was bagged, weighed and fuss-free - you paid! When young, we had a name for what today are known as conmen: they were then known as spivs. Anyone notorious for sharp practice was scorned and dismissed as having a barrow-boy mentality. At markets, we avoided snake-oil salesmen, phony auctions and “special discounts”. If tempted, we checked the box’s content before heading home to find it didn’t work anyway. Today’s barrow boys wear sharp suits, manage retail supermarkets and skulk behind branded goods. Management of modern supermarkets have acquired sophisticated skills to trick us out of our hard-earned money. More produce than ever is boxed unnecessarily. Pick the packet up and it is surprisingly light. Shake it, and you sense the actually

Don’t buy into retail therapy!

product is half the size of the packet. The box hasn’t changed, but the contents certainly have: four white fish in parsley sauce were once each bigger than the size of a tape cassette box. Still four slabs, but each the size of a business card. Sale prices, discounts and three-for-two deals are often manipulated to stay within the law - just! Their purpose is often to deceive clients. Razors are manufactured from three blades of putty-soft steel, and between each bristle lodges debris. This ensures they’re being useless after two or three shaves. I recall a time when Wagon Wheels were so named as they were impressively big. Now, Mini-Wheels are higher priced but less than half the size of the originals. We dine out or purchase from fast-food outlets, dismissing from our thoughts the reality that hygiene inspections are rarely undertaken - and often treated by owners with contempt. Where are the statutory bodies set up, supposedly to protect our interests? The EU is awash with ridiculous food-related regulations. How is it that the greater the bureaucracy, the lower the standards and the more cheating? The entire retail industry is on a par with politics and media when it comes to practising the dark arts of deception.

We buy meat products, but we prefer not to know about the beginning of the process, which ends in neatlypackaged products on supermarket shelves. I am not a veggie, I like meat. But my beef, if I can use the expression, is the methods used in animal farming. If Hitler’s Germany can ban all cruelties to animals, then so can we. There are humane ways of harvesting animals. Let the shareholders take a smaller cut and the customer. We buy cheap clothing. Chances are, it has been produced in worse conditions than those experienced by many of the cotton-plantation slaves of the 19th Century. Trade Unions are unheard of, and the workers have no insurance, no rights nor pensions. Like pit ponies, they are used and discarded, replaced at an overseer’s nod. The companies in Far East, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh often collapse. Few make the headlines when they do. They get a front page when there is a great loss of life only, and reporters’ boots happen to be on the ground. Some may recall the collapse of the Rana Plaza clothing factory in Bangladesh. When this shanty-building collapsed, 129 workers lost their lives, and a further 2,515 were injured. The news was off the radar a day or so after it happened. We were too busy shopping to care. The factory’s retail

customers were exposed and shamed. An official fund was set up, to which affected retailers like Asda, Debenhams, H & M and Primark could contribute. Matalan promised to contribute £3 million. A lot of money? Let us put things in perspective. Matalan’s owners, the Hargreaves family, are fabulously wealthy - and to them, £3m is small change. Their turnover in one year was £1.1 billion. A billion is 1,000 million pounds! They spent £13m on advertising alone. They have not parted with a single cent to help those distressed families who suffered so appallingly as a consequence of the sweatshops’ collapse. Sure, they say they donate to charity, but they are coy about beneficiaries. Why not direct charitable aid to those who paid with

their lives, so Matalan’s owners and shareholders could, at our expense, too, maximise their profits. Pay up, Matalan. In the greed-driven pursuit of profits, major retailers are nothing short of unethical rapists of public trust and purses. They would skin their own grandmothers if they could figure out a market for aged skin. Have the malls and their retailers got their binoculars on us as we approach their religious shrines? Here again, retailers engage cowboy parking operators who fleece car-park users from which retailers profit. The penalty notices aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. However, the wording is intimidating. If ignored, they are followed up by deeplyflawed letters which, falsely, claim legal clout.

Most people in their innocence are frightened into coughing up. McDonald’s (UK) have a contract with MET Parking Services. Unscrupulous, they are linked to a debt-collection agency for rampant dishonesty. If McDonald’s do that to their car-parking customers, what do they do to their food? Everyone is getting in on the car-park fee banditry opportunity for a fast buck. The greed is driven to a piranha feeding frenzy - and again, the customers are the offal being fought over. The list of car-park bandits cover public services, hospitals, local authorities, carparking “services”, and, of course, retail car parks. Maybe it is high time we took a long look at our habits. If we change our habits, maybe they will change theirs.

The Great War: The People’s Story

Don't Miss...

Sunday 10th August,ITV1, 21.00 The extraordinary stories of ordinary people whose lives were transformed during the First World War will be told in their own words in a landmark new series for ITV, made in partnership with Imperial War Museums Marking the centenary of the outbreak of the war in 1914, the experiences of men and women, young and old, from across Britain and the social classes that divided society at the time, are vividly brought to life. With narration from Olivia Colman, The Great War: The People’s Story tells the real-life stories of soldiers, from privates to officers, their wives and girlfriends left behind, and people from Britain’s villages and cities. They are portrayed by a cast of actors including Alison Steadman, Daniel Mays, Claire Foy, Brian Cox, Romola Garai, MyAnna Buring and Matthew McNulty, who speak their words as they were written in their diaries and letters. These moving accounts, revealing their intimate thoughts and feelings, offer a raw insight into the profound impact of being caught up in a conflict that would change their lives – and Britain – forever. Sourced from archives and libraries across the country, selected in partnership with Imperial War Museums, which provided much of the material, and brought to life by actors – each story conveys the hopes, fears, heroism and tragedies of countless ordinary British people… made all the more powerful by the fact that every word is real.

Executed Tuesday 12th August, ITV1, 21:00 Fifty years ago, in the summer of 1964, the last two men to be executed in Britain were hanged simultaneously in Liverpool and Manchester. This powerful documentary tells the stories of those put to death by the state in Britain. There is testimony from the relatives they left behind and from people who witnessed the final days of capital punishment. Timothy Evans was executed in 1950. His sister Maureen Westlake describes the pain she still feels about her innocent brother going to the gallows. Derek Bentley was hanged in 1953 for the murder of a policeman. He did not fire the fatal shot and had a mental age of 11. His niece Maria Bentley describes the family’s 45-year fight to prove his innocence. Ruth Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in Britain, executed in 1955 for shooting her lover. The speed with which she was condemned shocked the nation and provoked a public outcry. These cases together eventually brought about the end of capital punishment in this country.

For four years, the railways had fed the front line with vast numbers of men, munitions and supplies. But even after the Armistice had been signed in a railway carriage, the work of the railways was not done. As Britain continued to mourn its dead, the railways played an important part in their remembrance. Michael hears stories of railway war heroes and encounters a remarkable railway wagon used to honour them. He hears how the railways helped give birth to battlefield tourism and in the cemeteries of Ypres he meets the great grandchildren of some of the fallen.

Melvyn Bragg’s Radical Lives BBC2, 21:15

Two-part documentary in which Melvyn Bragg examines the lives, work and legacy of two men whose ideas have had tremendous consequences both in their own time and down the centuries. In this programme, Melvyn tells the remarkable story of the 18thcentury English radical political writer, Thomas Paine. Paine wrote three of the best-selling political essays of all time: Common Sense, Rights of Man and The Age of Reason. His books changed the world and helped shape modern democracy. He lit the fuse for the American Revolution, was an active participant in the French Revolution and laid the foundation for political reform in Britain. Melvyn travels from Norfolk to Philadelphia, New York and Paris as he follows in the footsteps of one of the great champions of democracy and human rights - Thomas Paine. Along the way, he shows how the freedoms we all now enjoy grew out of eighteenthcentury Enlightenment thinking and were given popular voice in the works of Thomas Paine.

The Zoo ITV1, 20.00 “Imagine looking after big, hairy, dangerous toddlers effectively having tantrums all day and asking everything of you all day. That’s what it’s like, looking after gorillas.” - ZSL keeper Dan Simmonds This three-part factual series for ITV goes behind the scenes to bring viewers compelling and vivid access to the lives of the animals and staff at ZSL London Zoo. Produced by Wild Pictures, the fourth series of this critically-acclaimed programme offers a privileged insight into the at times emotionally intense stories of keepers and their 20,000 diverse beasts at one of the world’s oldest zoos at its base in Regent’s Park and country estate at Whipsnade. The cameras focus on everything from majestic big cats and western lowland gorillas to tiny nocturnal primates. Dramatic moments from health scares and sudden deaths to moving births and the arrival of new species are featured in the series. The first episode features: Tiger triplets: Following a cross continental journey to get them together, London’s Sumatran tiger cubs Melati and Jae Jae are finally breeding. Last year they gave birth to a cub which tragically died aged just three weeks. Tony Cholerton, who has worked with the big cats for eight years, says: “We were all devastated. I mean it was the first cub that had been born at the zoo in all the time I had been there. It’s a decision that we couldn’t get right.” But the pair have now managed to produce healthy triplets - the zoo’s first tiger cubs for 17 years. The cameras follow their journey from the cubbing den to their first tentative steps into the paddock. Vets and keepers are seen holding the nervous cubs to administer early vaccinations and then six weeks later, just before they become too fierce to handle. Mammal keeper Paul Kybett says: “They were feisty enough last time. This time round they’re three weeks older so those claws are going to be huge. They’re a lot, lot stronger.” As the cubs venture out into the paddock for the first time, keeper Andrea Dempsey explains how relieved the staff are. She says: “Just to see them in the flesh out in the fresh air is brilliant. It’s so good to see.” Humboldt penguin chicks: Three years after building Penguin Beach, the zoo hadn’t managed to breed a single chick but this series sees its breeding programme for the endangered birds go into overdrive with no less than seven newborns. Head of birds Adrian Walls says: “For me there is a lot of pressure that as the years went by, we didn’t have any penguin chicks, we didn’t have any penguin eggs. ‘Ooh have you got any penguin eggs this year?’ And you’re having to say, ‘No not this year, no not this year.’ Now I’m in a position where I can boast a little bit.” Adrian, who is hand-rearing some of the birds, suddenly has a lot on his hands. He says: “It definitely makes the job a bit more exciting and a bit more pressured.” Vet dramas: At Whipsnade, vet Fieke Molenaar and her team continue with Flora the pygmy hippo’s life-saving cancer treatment as keeper Mark Holden looks on. There are only 2,000 pygmy hippos left in the wild, and Mark knows that if she can recover and breed again, it may help to conserve the species. He says: “It’s mixed emotions really with a procedure like this. One, you’re obviously concerned about the actual procedure itself and secondly in the back of your mind you’re thinking of what the outcome of the procedure’s going to be, in terms of the long-term future of Flora. She is genetically quite important in the captive population.” In London, vet Tai Strike tries to save a rare Goeldi monkey who’s lost its appetite. But will her efforts be enough? Gorilla training: Keeper Dan Simmonds is revamping the gorillas’ indoor gym ready for them to try out and pass opinion on; something he has had to develop a sense of humour about. He says: “You spend half a day doing it. You let them out and they couldn’t be less interested. They know, they can see. They’re smart enough. They’re up there watching, laughing at me. They’ve been doing it for ten years. It’s yet to break me.” Dan also trains alpha male Kumbuku to calmly allow him to give him an injection by hand and listen to his heart with a stethoscope by rewarding him with treats including his favourite: baby porridge.

The Village BBC1, 21.00

1923. The Allinghams have had a good war and are now ensconced in a grander house, where Edmund is hosting a weekend party for the entertainment of his political sponsor, Lord Kilmartin. The highlight of the weekend is a man hunt, with Bert Middleton as the quarry. He’s wagered Kilmartin £5 that he’ll win, saving up to leave the Village for a job in Sheffield. John Middleton, now dairy farming, has been renting young Alf Rutter’s barn to house his 20 head of cattle and milking machine, but he’s in cash difficulties and Rutter refuses to wait for his rent. The Allinghams lay on a boxing tournament on the cricket pitch for the entertainment of the villagers. Edmund takes the opportunity to make an election speech, but the Allinghams are surprised when Bill Gibby, the Labour candidate, follows him onto the podium to make an impassioned plea for the Left.

Come On Down! The Game Show Story Transmission: ITV1, 19.00

Bruce Forsyth reveals he asked Bob Monkhouse if he could host Family Fortunes: “The show I really liked and I wanted was ‘Family Fortunes’. That was the one I wanted.” Presented by Bradley Walsh, this four-part series tells the definitive history of the TV game show. Featuring classic archive footage and interviews with some of the biggest names in entertainment, this series charts the key moments in game show history and tells the story behind some of our best-loved game and quiz shows. A self-confessed game show fanatic, Bradley shares his favourite game show moments and goes on a journey to discover just how this television genre has kept Britain hooked for more than sixty years. Bradley immerses himself in game show nostalgia - from meeting TV legend Sir Bruce Forsyth, playing The Golden Shot with Anne Aston and Bernie the Bolt, and being quizzed under the Mastermind spotlight by host John Humphrys, to sending Anneka Rice back up in that Treasure Hunt helicopter (in that famous jumpsuit!).

Judge Rinder ITV1, 14.00 Judge Rob Rinder is an exceptional British barrister who has instructed some of the most high profile cases of recent years, including the New Year’s Eve shootings of Leticia Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis and the manslaughter of Iraqi detainees by British soldiers. In his brand new show for ITV Daytime, Judge Rinder is bringing the action of a courtroom to television and bringing justice to those who’ve been wronged. He will adjudicate over real, small-claim cases in a studio courtroom. Each programme will see three different cases brought to Judge Rinder who will hear each case, question the claimant and defendant, speak to witnesses, assess the evidence and make a judgement on each case with a variety of cases for each show.

Long Lost Family ITV1, 21.00 Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell present a brand new series of the Bafta award winning series Long Lost Family, which traces and reunites families who have been apart for most of their lives. Across eight episodes, viewers are taken on a moving journey, from the moment relatives reveal how they lost contact with a family member, to being told their loved one has been traced, to their eventual reunion. Series four features mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters and brothers searching for loved ones who they are desperate to find. The programme travels as far as South Africa and Australia and with the help of Nicky and Davina, families are guided through the heart-rending reunion process. Davina said: “Long Lost Family is unlike anything else I’ve ever been involved in - it’s emotional, it’s heart-warming and it’s life changing for the people we reunite. It’s such a huge honour to be a part of their stories and ultimately to help them find loved ones.” In each programme, Long Lost Family explores the background and social context of each family’s estrangement and why it occurred. Many of the people in the series were adopted or gave children up for adoption when they were younger and Nicky Campbell has personal experience of this. He was adopted as a child, before searching for and being reunited with his birth mother and father as an adult. Nicky is now a patron of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering. Nicky said: “The previous series have been compelling and emotional and unmissable but I think in this series we have some of the most extraordinary stories that we’ve ever told, from some of the most amazing people.”

With no way to turn, Rick is pushed to the edge in more ways than one. In the aftermath of Rosie’s (Hannah Midgley) dad’s accident, Kim (Katherine Parkinson) feels increasingly responsible for her. But when social services come to talk to Rosie about her baby’s future, Kim’s caring nature is pushed to its limit.

100 Year Old Drivers ITV1, 20.00 “I don’t want to drive like an old... I’m not an old man! I’ve got my licence ‘til 2016, but I don’t think I’ve got a licence for myself ‘til 2016, I think I shall be gone before then.” - 100-year-old driver Harry Kartz This new documentary for ITV hits the road with some of Britain’s oldest drivers to discover why and how they still get behind the wheel. There are nearly 200 drivers over the age of 100 in the UK. Motorists over the age of 70 must reapply through the post for a driving licence every three years but are not automatically re-tested. This programme hears first-hand from those aged over 100, from those heading towards the milestone age and from their families about their motoring habits. It also asks whether elderly motorists should be regularly re-tested on their skills. But as this vivid portrayal of elderly drivers finds out, prising car keys from the hands of a senior motorist can be the most difficult step of all - potentially depriving them of their freedom and independence. We meet centurion Bomber Command veteran Harry Kartz who drives to the betting shop and back every day; Retired school teacher Mary Walker, 100, who is one of just 59 women over the century mark still driving; and Searson Thompson, who at 102 years old could be Britain’s oldest driver and relishes the freedom of getting behind the wheel. Others who feature in the programme are Ken and Edna Medlock, 99 and 98 respectively, who are still in love and drive to the seaside for a date by the sea; Basil Smith, 93, who is tested by a driving instructor to see if he is still up to the task; Sheila Collinson, 102, who has recently had her car keys taken off her by her daughters, and is furious; author Val Biro, 92, who has a classic car to contend with; and Harry Johnson, 91, who is getting back on his motorcycle after 18 months off it. In Solihull, John Kartz arrives to inspect his dad’s driving. At 100, Harry has been on the road for 86 years, and maintains his driving is better than ever. He says: “I’m not dangerous now. I used to be. I’ve written off three cars you see. This is the Daimler Jag I had, and I hit another car head on and finished up in Walsall Hospital with a fractured spine.” Mary Walker, also 100 and counting, remains defiant: “It’s exhilarating, going fast. People that drive slowly, they frustrate you. How fast do I like to go? I don’t think I ought to answer that. “I don’t feel old, why should I feel old? There’s nothing you can do about reaching 100, you can’t put the brakes on and say “stop”. That’s it. You’re there and you’ve got to put up with it.” Searson Thompson lives in Aberdyfi, Wales, with the nearest shops five miles up the coast. He took to the road 88 years ago performing stunts on motorbikes, and admits the secrets of his long life are, ‘Wine, women and whisky.’ He says: “I drive because I fetch my own food. I drive because I’m on my own. I drive because I’m completely self-sufficient. If I were to stop driving now... I’d vegetate in my own home, and I wouldn’t be able to get out.” Ken and Edna Medlock, meanwhile, are heading to the seaside for a romantic date. Ken says he is determined not just to give up in his old age: “We’re not regarding ourselves as, ‘Oh well, we’ve had our life and now let’s shut ourselves up and just wait for the end.’ We’re just carrying on as though we were 60 and with a long time in front of us.” Basil Smith, now 93, has his own way of staying young - by keeping fit and driving. This week, Basil plans to be assessed by an experienced driving instructor to decide whether it’s time to hand in the keys. He says: “If the driving instructor failed me and said I wasn’t good enough then I’d have to pack in driving. It would be a shock. It would hit me for six, I’m afraid.

The World’s War BBC2, 21.00

Historian and filmmaker David Olusoga challenges people’s understanding of World War One, telling it from the perspective of those of who made it a truly global conflict: the hundreds of thousands of Indian, African and Asian troops and ancillaries who fought and died alongside Europeans. Drawing on personal stories and testimonies, and illustrated with rarely seen stills, archive and location photography, The World’s War dissects how the complexities of Empire and the hypocrisies of race played out against the background of a global struggle for dominance. Part two explores how Germany enrolled the Muslim peoples of North Africa and the Middle East to join a Jihad against the allies. In Germany, Muslim POWs and deserters held in special camps were indoctrinated to see the German emperor as a lover of Islam and a supporter of national independence wherever the British or French flags flew. Meanwhile in East Africa, the legendary German general Paul von LettowVorbeck led an army of African troops in a bitter insurgency war against the allies, a forgotten war that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of black Africans.

Secrets from The Clink ITV1, 21.00

In episode two, Len Goodman finds out the next chapter in the story of his great great uncle Henry who was jailed for attacking his father, Michelle Collins is horrified by the Dickensian conditions her ancestor experienced in a debtors prison and Daisy McAndrew follows the incredible story of her great great great great great grandmother who dodged the hangman’s noose and was transported to Australia where her fortunes changed. Michelle Collins visits Monmouth Street in Covent Garden and is surprised to discover that when her ancestor, Thomas Bright, had his umbrella making workshop there, it was on the edge of one of the worst slums in London. In the late 1840s, a trade depression and inflation caused many small businesses to fail and Thomas’s was one of them. Debtors could be thrown into prison without trial and Thomas was sent to Whitecross Street debtors prison in 1848. Even though debtors had no money, they had to pay “garnish” for their lodging in the prison. Michelle is upset to find that even in a debtors’ prison, Thomas was getting himself into more debt and his predicament was made worse as his wife Susanna was pregnant. Michelle discovers that Thomas’ imprisonment could have continued for years if he was unable to find the money to pay off his debts. Michelle says: “It’s terrible, he’s a victim of his circumstances, of being working class really. You think prison is a place for people who have committed a crime, generally for people who are dangerous to us, or a danger to themselves. He’s not a danger to anybody. It’s not a crime, he’s just trying to make a living.“ Thomas Bright’s only chance of release from prison was to appeal to the Court of Relief for Insolvent Debtors at London’s Lincolns Inn. He had to convince the judges that his debt was wasn’t fraudulent, was caused by misfortune and promise to repay his creditors. Thomas would have to sell his entire business, including the tools of his trade, and start again from scratch

BBC1, 21.00 Acting legend Brian Blessed traces his family story in the second episode of the new series of Who Do You Think You Are? The son of a coalminer, Brian was born in 1936 in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. Today he lives in Surrey with his wife and their many rescued animals. Brian shot to fame in the early 1960s in the police drama Z Cars and went on to star in television, theatre and film, famously playing Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon. More recently he has chaired the quiz Have I Got News For You. He is a passionate adventurer, having made three attempts on Everest and is the oldest man to reach the North Magnetic Pole. Brian wants to know where his adventuring spirit comes from. His journey starts in Doncaster but soon leads him back to London and then Portsmouth, revealing an adventuring ancestor, Jabez Blessed, who was his great, great, grandfather and who survived being orphaned and living rough on the streets of London to father 13 children of his own. Brian says: “I love my name Brian Blessed, it’s the most perfect name, I like it and wouldn’t exchange it for any name, but who are the Blesseds? It’s not good enough just to know your mother and father and your granddad and your - this that and the other ... you need to know the whole root system.” “I had always wanted to be an explorer or an actor, those were my two great loves in life and I was determined to do it.” “I’m going to find out about my family history. I’m going on an adventure, everything to me is an adventure, this is going to be an adventure...I really am looking forward to it.” “I’m a Yorkshireman through and through and I think that Yorkshire people have a great sense of humour, so I’m approaching this with humour, but I’m very serious about it as well, almost naive and full of faith. I can’t wait to get started.”

The Honourable Woman BBC2, 21.00 Realising Israeli powers had only ever wanted to use the Stein name, company and connections for their own political and intelligence affairs, Nessa angrily forges ahead with the data cabling initiative in partnership with Palestinian Jalal El-Amin. Separately, Shlomo and Hayden-Hoyle discover the CIA was also aware of the Israeli wiretap and, aided by Monica Chatwin, has managed to covertly piggyback on top of it for their own listening purposes. Events take a dark course during a visit to the West Bank to launch the latest phase of data cabling.

Motorway Cops BBC1, 22:35

Tip-Offs and Tearaways. Reality series revealing the everyday heroism of the traffic police. Britain’s motorways are getting busier, and with fewer officers on the road the motorway cops often need the public to tip them off about illegal cars and drivers. PCs Dale Anderson and Doug Lofthouse receive a radio report of an overturned car on the motorway, PCs Mike Wroe and Chris Spencer are on a night shift when they spot a car driving erratically, and PCs James Alderson and Paul Crabtree respond to an anonymous tip-off of a car that might be involved in drug dealing. Back in Bradford, PC Bob Hoyle responds to a call of burglars making their way away from the scene of the crime. When he stops the car full of lads and questions them they deny everything. But what they don’t know is that they were caught on camera, proving that help from the public can make all the difference in the cops fight against crime.

Putin bans EU imports RUSSIA has responded to sanctions over Ukraine by imposing a “full embargo” on food imports from the EU and America.

Some other Western countries are also affected, including Australia, Canada and Norway. The ban covers fruit, vegetables, meat, fish,

milk and dairy imports, says Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. But the Kremlin decree does not specify which items will be affected. Instead, President Putin has ordered his government to draw up the list of food and agricultural products to be limited or banned. The Russian authorities clearly believe these restrictions will hurt foreign exporters more than the Russian

economy. Moscow, already looking elsewhere for food imports, will hold talks this week with Argentina, Ecuador and Brazil. And judging by the language coming out of Moscow, there is no sign of the Kremlin backing down over its support for armed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Russia’s Government departments have been instructed to come up with a list

of products to be sanctioned. It has imposed import bans on other states in the past, but normally on grounds of public health. Its national news agency, RIA Novosti, quoted an official from the country’s agricultural and veterinary watchdog as saying that the new sanctions would apply to all agricultural products imported from the US. “Fruits and vegetables from the Europe-

an Union will also be under a full ban,” said Alexey Alekseenko. Russia buys fruit and vegetables from the EU worth an annual two billion euros (£1.6bn) and food and agricultural products from the US worth about 1bn euros. Last week, Russia banned most agricultural imports from Poland on the grounds of public health in what was seen as a thinlyveiled retaliation for Poland’s advocacy of tough action over Ukraine. The list of goods being affected should be ready by now, according to Russian business newspaper Vedomosti. But wine and baby food will not be affected. Russia, first subjected to sanctions after annexing Crimea in March, has been accused of fomenting the armed rebellion in Ukraine’s eastern regions. The EU hardened its sanctions at the end of July, amid growing anger over the downing of the Malaysia Airlines jet.

By Jamie Drew IT’S not that far away! The annual celebration of the entertainment scene and its performers takes th place on 12 October at Castillio San Miguel.

8th August 2014 - 21st August 2014

Tenerife Entertainment Awards

It has always been a major event in the entertainment calendar, not only for the performing artistes who have made Tenerife their home, but also for the loyal ex-pats who have done exactly the same and support this unique, vibrant scene, year after year. Over the last 12 months, there have been lots of new artistes appearing, with most achieving success on the circuit, Apart from the recognition an artiste receives on the day by

way of an award, it is a wonderful afternoon of entertainment. This year being the eighth Tenerife Entertainment Awards, the organisers have been clever with the branding. The theme is the Eighties and has been coupled with the pun, Now That’s What I Call The 8th TEA’s. It has recently been announced that Nathan Swift will be returning to host this year’s ceremony. Nathan, although living and working in the UK now, was an extreme-

ly popular DJ here in Tenerife and still remains so. Those who know him will agree that any Eighties- themed party in Tenerife would not be the same without him. The nominations will be starting soon and will, again, become a big focus on the social networks. From now, there will be a weekly section on this page keeping you up to date with all the gossip and information generated from this huge event.

BEN SIMMINGTON

A FEW weeks ago, I heard of a new piece of “tech” equipment the club DJs are starting to use.

When new technology becomes available, it is usually the case that the Canary Islands are a little behind because of shipping the equipment and other red-tape issues. This time, Tenerife is first to have Kuvo technology installed in one of its most popular clubs. Papagayo Beach club is home to Ben Simmington, resident DJ and events manager, who has always been up-to-date with the latest tech. And after a beer or two one night, he explained

Kaluna Beach Club is becoming a popular venue. Although it is not a nightclub, the DJs who play there are the best on the Island.

Billy Blanco has been DJing here since his fingers were small enough to fit through the hole in the middle of a vinyl. He has recently started at Kaluna Beach Club, is now resident there for the summer and plays in the afternoons during the venue’s popular pool parties. Billy has a huge following among the British and Spanish, and he has been resident DJ at Rags in the Starco area of Las Americas

to me how Kuvo works. To begin with, Ben has been streaming his DJ

sets via his website for some time. But just imagine that

for almost a decade. Billy has never used anything pre-recorded and everything is live. The amazing thing about this DJ is his ability to mix practically anything with anything … and make it work! So many times I have seen him go from one genre to another, or even totally blow people away by dropping a really unexpected song over a drum-and-bass bed. When Adele first released Someone Like You, Billy was quick to remix it in a D & B style - and I was there the first time he did it. The reaction was awesome. Just watching DJs work can be fascinating and I am looking forward to seeing Billy at Kaluna Beach Club this summer in a different

environment from the one I am used to seeing him in.

instead of just listening to the set, you could access information

about what is being played. This may sound simple, but a club DJ doesn’t just play an MP3. He or she will have multiple tracks playing at any one time with different loops and tempos. Now, if you are into your electronic dance music, you will love the App, Kuvo. Especially if you are a DJ yourself and want to know how the DJ has just mixed the last track. Most of the information Kuvo kicks out to the user is technical, but to the EDM fan it is valuable if they wish to try to recreate the sound. The possibilities

are endless, and technology is growing faster than people can keep up with it. This app also proves that the DJ is mixing live and not just using a pre-recorded mix, which, for a DJ, would be the equivalent of a singer lip-syncing. Once you have the app, it streams information in real time, so you can hear the mix happening and let Kuvo show you how it is being done instantaneously. You can download Kuvo from all app stores - and next time you are in Papagayo Beach Club, you will be able to keep tabs on Ben.

On the Oasis Fm Playlist.. David Guetta ft Sam Martin: Lovers on The Sun PIERRE ‘David’ Guetta is the world’s most successful crossover DJ. The half-Moroccan half-Belgian superstar has had five smash-hit albums, 19 UK top-10 singles, five UK No.1s and has worked with everyone that matters. He is so prolific that it can be hard to keep up with the number of his releases, but his latest one is the best for a while. Lovers On The Sun was co-written and is sung by Sam Martin, who has been a musical journeyman. He has recorded songs for Maroon 5 and has sung his own songs, but with little mainstream success. That is about to change. Lovers On The Sun has a real Wild West vibe and showcases Martin’s under-rated vocals. Co-produced by man of the moment Avicci, it has already hit the top10 in Australia, Sweden, Spain, Norway and Hungary, and it is No.1 in Finland. Expect the UK to join that list in the next few weeks.

Twin Atlantic: Brothers And Sisters

SAM McTrusty, Barry McKenna, Ross McNae and Craig Kneale are the next big thing to come out of Glasgow.

Formed in 2007, they have been well known in the music scene after touring with the likes of Biffy Clyro, Blink 182 and The Smashing Pumpkins. Their 2009 debut album Vivarium was critically well-received, and their 2011 follow-up Free moved them forward. Edit Me and Free made the Radio 1 playlist and brought them a new audience. Red Bull records were always planning a major push with the third album and the boys have more than delivered. First single Heart And Soul cracked the UK Top 20 and second single Brothers and Sisters is set to follow it. The new album, Great Divide, is out on 18th August and should confirm Twin Atlantic’s arrival. The band have an earthy, almost dirty, feel. And with Sam McTrusty’s thick Glaswegian vocals, Twin Atlantic are standing out from the crowd.

Nico & Vinz: Am I Wrong There are not too many Norwegian acts who get to No.1 in America and sell a million copies. A-ha did it in the Eighties, and then Nico Sereba and Vincent Dery followed suit a few weeks ago.

They formed in 2009 as Envy and first release, One Song, made the Norway top 20. The Magic Soup and the Bittersweet Faces album didn’t do great, and they went away for a rethink. But their record company, Warner Brothers, saw potential. They persuaded the change of name and, armed with some new feelgood tunes, they were launched in the US. Am I Wrong, with its mainstream melody was an instant smash. It tore up the charts and eventually made the top spot before crossing the Atlantic and doing the same. Its UK release was held up by a contract problem, but this week it finally gets a release. It’s nailed on for No.1 ahead of the album Black Star Elephant’s release next month.

The Script: Superheroes THIS is the lead single from the Irish lads’ fourth studio album, No Sound Without Silence, which is released on 15th September.

Lead singer and front man Danny O’Donoghue described the album as “a prequel to our debut in many ways. We’d come off stage and start recording straight away in a studio bus. Everything’s massive, everything’s larger than life on stage so, when we hit the studio, we wanted it to have that same impact.” James Barry has produced the new album and he wrote the new single Superheroes, which has a more mature sound to it. There is a bigger guitar feel, and the song has more depth than some of The Script’s pervious material. One critic described the song as brilliant, saying: “There is no way The Script aren’t reaching No.1 with this. It is epic in every way.”

Babies make mums so tired

By Val Sainsbury MANY new mothers suffer from extreme tiredness, even four months after giving birth.

It has prompted experts to warn that they should not hurry back to work. An Australian study found half of new mothers were still “excessively sleepy” even 18 weeks into motherhood. The findings have “significant implications” for decisions-makers about the length of maternity leave, according to researchers. Dr Ashleigh Filtness, of Queensland University of Technology, studied the sleep patterns and tiredness in women after giving birth. She found that despite new mothers recording

stable-night sleep times at 18 weeks, they continued to report being excessively tired. The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, followed 33 healthy new Australian mums who recorded their sleep patterns after giving birth in 15-minute increments during weeks six, 12 and 18. Dr Filtness said: “Sleep

disruption strongly influences daytime function, with sleepiness recognised as a risk-factor for people performing critical and dangerous tasks.” She added: “Our findings bring into question whether four months’ parental leave is sufficient to ensure daytime sleepiness has diminished to a manageable

level before returning to work.” And while new mothers were still waking on average twice a night to attend to their babies at six, 12 and 18 weeks - their total sleep time was about seven hours and 20 minutes. Australian new mothers actually slept more than the average American ones, who got six

hours and 53 minutes. Dr Filtness added: “While post-partum women experienced disturbed sleep, they didn’t necessarily experience total reduced sleep time. “What we found was that, inevitably, new mothers will wake in the night to attend to their infant. And the number of times they wake remains consistent during the first 18 post-partum weeks. “Sleep disruption reduced over time, and it appears that this was driven by a reduction in the time it took for new mums to return to sleep, suggesting that improved efficiency by mothers at settling their infant or the development of the infant’s circadian rhythm.’ She added that the findings highlighted the importance of sleep quality, as opposed to sleep quantity - especially during the first 12 weeks. Referring back to the length of maternity

leave a woman has, Dr Filtness said: “It is important when developing regulations for parental leave entitlements that policy-makers take into account the high prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness experienced by new mothers. “With the birth of every baby, the new mother must adjust to the demands of parenting, and one aspect of that is to remain functional while experiencing potentially severe sleep disruption. “To put this into context, the assessment tool used to determine new mums’ sleepiness is also used by GPs to determine clinically relevant levels of sleepiness. “If any other otherwise healthy person presented to a doctor with this degree of sleepiness. she/he would likely have been offered advice regarding implications for daytime impairment, including the impact on sustaining attention and decision making.”

Dementia: The big fear TWO-THIRDS of people over 50 are scared of developing dementia, while just 10% are frightened about getting cancer.

Older people are more fearful of developing dementia than they are of cancer, a poll has suggested. Two thirds of people over the age of 50 fear that they will develop the condition, while just one in 10 said she was frightened about getting cancer. Just under

4% said they were frightened about getting a heart condition and less than 1% were concerned about developing diabetes, according to a survey of 500 adults aged over 50 from across the UK, who were asked which condition they feared most. There are around 800,000 people with dementia in the UK. But as the population ages, this figure is expected to soar in coming years. Symptoms can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. It occurs when

the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, or a series of strokes. “‘As an increasing number of people are diagnosed with dementia, more people are seeing the profound impact that it can have on both the individual as well as the wider family,’ said Paul Green, director of communications at over50s company Saga, which conducted the survey. “However, while these fears are completely understandable, it’s important that education

around the condition is enhanced to give a greater understanding of the benefits of early diagnosis - and how this can help those living with the condition continue to lead fulfilling lives.’” Of the poll, Hilary Evans, director of external affairs at the Alzheimer’s Research UK charity, said: “It’s no surprise to learn that fear of dementia in people over 50 is high: dementia affects over 820,000 people in the UK and we currently lack treatments to tackle the condition.

“The challenge is to find new ways to treat and prevent dementia to show there is hope of taking on dementia and beating it. “Research holds the answer to this devastating condition and, with the number of people affected set to grow as the population ages, the need for investment in research has never been more urgent.’” Alison Cook, director of external affairs at the Alzheimer’s Society charity, added: “The possibility of losing the very essence of what

makes you the individual you are is a frightening prospect. “‘But fear can mean people don’t get a diagnosis and can often miss the opportunity to access treatments (which are effective only for people in the earlier stages of the condition) and the time to make important decisions about their future. “We urge anyone concerned about dementia to speak to their GP and get in touch with the Alzheimer’s Society as there are lots of ways we can help.’”

Please let’s be ‘hair friends’

Who are today’s stand-out icons? By Ruth Benson

By Carl from Robot

WHAT is a fashion icon? New York Times Fashion Critic, Vanessa Friedman’s recent article declaring that Beyoncé is not a fashion icon has caused journalists to actually think what makes this stand-out person.

THERE comes a time when you sit in the stylist’s chair and hear the dreaded words you know are coming.

Vanessa makes the point that although Beyoncé is an icon, but debates whether she is a fashion icon. The word icon is widely used, but what makes someone a style or fashion icon? We tend to call people fashion icons because of who they are and by what they are wearing. It’s easy to think someone is an icon because she hits the headlines or the likes of Madonna in her pointy bra and, recently, with Lady Gaga and her outrageous outfits. But is this iconic? Style Director Kate says “a style icon should have at least stood the test of time”, and goes on to say: “I will give them three decades. “So 30 years after their hey-day, you can close your eyes and summon up an image of them instantly - not an outfit, but an image that evokes a felling or a mood.”

That said, who does she actually see as fashion icons? Her list includes Princess Diana, David Bowie, Marie Antoinette, Michael Jackson, Courtney Love, Katherine Hepburn, Diana Ross and Vivienne Westwood, to name a few. Daily Telegraph columnist Lisa Armstrong detests the word “icon” regarding famous people because she says they are given the clothes to wear and are dressed in a certain way.” Out of the limelight, they are slobs,” she insists. She believes proper fashion icons are people like you and me, making their own styles, putting together their own trends, wearing what they like. Lisa does, however, agree that the description “icon” is for someone who can stand the test of time. She goes on to say: “If you want to identify the true style stars, who are today’s equivalents of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly? Whose style

will they be poring over in 50 years? That definitely sorts out the wheat from the chaff’. The problem underlying icons and celebrities is that what we see them in needs to create a media impact, and this has always been the case. When I think back to icons, my first is of Marilyn Monroe and the white dress over the air vent. But was the dress iconic, or the fact hat it blew up and, therefore, grabbed media attention? We all know how important media is, and even more so now with social media and images being uploaded instantly. I believe that any kind of icon becomes an icon because he/she makes a statement or has an impact. The definition of an icon is “a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol or as a worthy veneration”. So who could be our fashion icons in 30 years?

But you just don’t want to admit them to yourself. You’ve seen your hair become a little too long and you want to keep it, but know you shouldn’t. It never looks good when you wear it down, but putting it in a ponytail looks like a schoolgirls’ reunion hair-do. So, you’re in the chair, you know what’s coming and you cringe, hoping no one will see your bottom lip start to blubber. Then the immortal words leave your stylist’s mouth as you see people rolling their eyes and tutting. “I’m going to have to take off more than the ends,” he informs you. It’s as though someone has told you that you’re going to spend time in prison, or you’ve just lost your new job. Clients HATE me telling them this. I honestly believe a woman would rather have a tooth out than have her beloved hair length shortened. But why? I’m not a lover of chopping away at someone’s hair because I get a thrill out of seeing hair on the floor I don’t receive any more money for doing

this extra work, so why do we have to remove more than you want, leaving you feeling that you’ve been attacked by a knife-wielding maniac? Hair is a living thing. It sprouts from our head in various amounts and crowns our head, making us feel special ever day. Is this why we are attached to it? Is this why, when I whip out the scissors, I see you giving me the evil eye and telling me you hate me? Well there’s a moral to my tale. As stylists, we are trained. We are told to cut hair to suit the face shape. We are told to guide the client through the upkeep of the style and the maintenance of the condition and colour. It is at this point, as we are removing what looks like “rat chick” hair - or, as I like to call it, “ratchic” - that the whole point of what we try to tell you becomes apparent. LOOK AFTER IT! If you don’t want to see it on my salon floor, or that of any other stylists, then try to do as we advise. Listen to our info, and when we say you shouldn’t go ahead with those highlights,

there’s a reason for it. We care about your hair. If you’re washing it in bubblebath and not using a conditioner, dragging combs through it and bleaching the very soul out of it in this hot Tenerife sun, then don’t look at us as though we are the Devil’s best friend as your split-ends fall to the floor - along with your jaw! We don’t cut hair off for no reason. If it’s bad on the ends, this breakage, if not removed, will travel up the hair to the roots and you could lose all of it. I know I can be heavy on you guys, but my job can be made so much easier if I don’t have to counsel you before a haircut as to why you need four inches off when you’re asking for one. Hairstyling is all about hair looking its best, and not dangling three whisps of hair down your back so you can say that you have long hair. Yes, you have long hair, but just look at it! Removing a little will make things appear a whole lot better, giving the hair strength and making it look thicker. Stylists can be your best “hair friend” and not your worst enemy!

By Monica Dyson I AM going to be extremely rich very soon. And for those who want to send me a begging letter, just wait a bit.

I haven’t actually got the vast fortune yet. But, at the click of my mouse, it seems that it could be imminent! I’ve been offered so many shares of inheritances lately by email that my bank manager will be offering me a job! And, one of my emails was actually from a US bank manager, telling me about my share of a one-million-dollar deposit waiting for me in his bank! I have been invited to collect my share of an investment in the Gulf, been kindly informed that I have been scammed and to send details of my credit card so that a stop can be put on it and had a 12m share of a deal in Cote D’Ivoire. If it does sound too good to be true… Rome. That sounded very plausible, and from a Sir Jamie Eduardo! I wonder when I bought that ticket? The best one I ever had was when I was asked to share in Saddam Hussein’s fortune by someone who had found it buried in Iraq and needed to store it somewhere for a while. Guess where it was to be stored? Yes, my bank account. In every case, you have to provide personal details of your banking system. And I have quite often received emails telling me that there has been unusual activity in my accounts in banks I have never ever banked with! Of course, I am old enough and wise enough, hopefully, to realise that they are all scams. And although they are annoying, I have enough sense to delete them. But it seems that not everyone does that. Although today’s scams are not primarily targeting pensioners, they are aimed at the most

vulnerable and trusting, with many old folk fitting into that category. After all, if there were not some measure of success, would these scammers waste their time? There are so many scams around. Bogus callers, Internet scams, telephone scams and scams by post, often telling you about a lottery win. It may not be relevant to those living abroad, but it could happen to you if you return to the UK at any time. Many of today’s telephone scams are simply nuisance-selling calls, but some are a means of obtaining bank details over the phone. I have had numerous calls from computer companies, purporting to represent a wellknown software company, who want to fix my computer problem. Many people may have some computer problems and so, may believe the fraudster when told that their

computer has a serious virus problem. Do not take any notice of these calls. If you are having trouble with anything on your computer, obtain the name of a reputable computer engineer. Someone may ring you regarding your Council tax, guarantee on your Sky television system, private pensions, competition wins … energysaving devices. In fact, almost anything. Do not take any notice. Stop and think. If something seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Ask your callers to let you have details in writing. Suggest that if they know your number, then they will also know your address. But, don’t give it out or any other personal details. There are even online dating scams. Fraudsters use fake IDs and even photos they have obtained from the Web, of someone - certainly not themselves. Once the relationship and trust is established, the

tricksters claim they are in a bit of a financial mess and desperately need money for family, travel or medical costs. But the only one who will be in a financial mess is yourself, when your money disappears with the fraudster! Although, the fact that he looked so much like Brad Pitt could have been a bit of a giveaway! A serious fraud is doing the rounds at the moment, again by phone. Fraudsters posing as bank officials or police call you to tell you there has been a problem with your bank account and to ring your bank. However, they don’t hang up so, when you try to dial out, they are still connected. They ask for your pin number and send a courier to collect your card. Then your account is drained. Unbelievably, people are falling for this scam. As far as pin numbers are concerned, always shield your pin with your

free hand when typing it into the keypad. If your card is stolen or a cash machine looks odd, or if there seems to be any unusual activity round the machine, report it to the bank straight away. Be aware of the mail your elderly relatives are receiving or sending out. The enormity of this problem was brought to light when Marilyn Baldwin set up a campaign group after her elderly mother died. She found over 30,000 letters in her mum’s home, from scammers asking for cash. Her mother had refused to believe they were not genuine and parted with her life savings. She thought her big win was just round the corner. As a result of the publicity the case generated, hundreds of other people came forward to say that it had happened to them. Stop and think. And ask yourself why is it that you are the one who has been chosen for this good fortune!

Happy Feet’s big step forward THE Happy Feet dance troop, from Ritmania Escuela de Baile, tapped their way through the grand final of the Tu Tambien Vales talent show in Puerto de la Cruz last weekend. The competition was devised by Canarian singer and producer Vicente Rey to showcase and discover fresh young talent in the Canaries. The grand prize for winning was 300 euros and a feature spot on the Tu Tambien Vales album. Happy Feet, from the Los Cristianos group Ritamania and choreographed by Carla Guest, sailed through their heats and semi-finals. They won both, dancing to Bang Bang by Will.i.am, and a technical Irish number. The final, at Sala el Gofio, showcased 20 acts - some singers and some dance troops - and a panel of judges, plus a

public vote, decided the winners. On the night, the Happy Feet tappers did everyone proud by leading the public vote, and finishing fifth overall with an excellent routine, dancing to Sing, Sing, Sing. The young performers all aged between 7-17, were Ellie Mark, Olivia Banks, Aliyah Scammell, Keela Scammell, Annie Ephgrave, Evie Ephgrave, Francesca Knell, Erin Alonso, Carissa O’Brien, Maria Armstrong, Mina Vernolini, Maddy Garafalo, Abygayle Murray, Libby Crewsdon, Molly Cawley, Sam Cawley and Sophie Mclean. And part of their prize is a day out, paintballing (without tap shoes!). Overall winner was singer Adrian Aguiar, from Gran Canaria, and you can see the final of Tu Tambien Vales on local TV soon.

Live Arico news

Theatre kids raise the roof THE ultra-talented students from Rotherham’s Gillian Banks Theatre School performed to their biggest Tenerife audience yet this week. Almost 200 guests, supporting charities Helping and Live Arico PAWS, were treated to an evening of superb

singing and dancing at La Cueva, in Aldea Blanca. The outcome was a fabulous, much-needed 1,618 euros to be shared between the charities. On behalf of Helping Hands and Live Arico, respective Presidents Liz Montague and Sue

Havenhand extend their thanks and appreciation to the guys and girls of the Gillian Banks Theatre School for their outstanding performance - and for supporting the charities again this year. It was a very professional, entertaining evening and everyone agreed they put on a fabulous performance. M a n y thanks to everyone who came to support this event, and to local businesses, who kindly donated prizes for the raffle. Thanks

to Marion for your help, Martin Banks for an excellent sound system, the student chaperones and helpers, and Colin Stevens for driving them around. Well done also to the restaurant for catering

for so many, so well. As a token of appreciation, a certificate of thanks was presented to Gillian for the Theatre School’s continued support. Next year, we could need a bigger venue!

Felix is a small Giant FELIX is a Giant Yorkshire Terrier - a rare breed evidently - but don’t be put off by the description!

He is still only around seven kilos and certainly won’t fill your apartment. His history is a little sketchy, but he may have been used for breeding - and he is used to being left alone. He is quiet yet friendly and was filaria (heartworm) positive. But has had the painful, expensive treatment, and is now clear. But please protect your pets against this horrendous condition. Can you offer Felix a loving home? If so, please call Sue on 629 388 102 to arrange a meeting. Howards Smoke House On Wednesday, 20th August, we have an evening of entertainment and great food in aid of Live Arico PAWS

and the Sangha Sanctuary San Miguel. A hot and cold buf-

fet will be served, followed by entertainment hosted by Colin

Stevens and Suzy Q. Tickets are 15 euros, from 629 388 102.

By Sue McDonald COLOUR is one of the most important elements of interior design. It can make a room drab, neutral or stunning.

With our fabulous climate, it is possible to use much brighter col-

8th August 2014 - 21st August 2014

Make sure your interior is not plainly inferior

ours than would be the case in the UK. Also, if people use their property for holidays only, they often want their colour scheme to reflect this, and have something completely different from their permanent home. Because the light is so clear here, you can get away with really vibrant tones of colours, such as burnt oranges, lime

greens, blues, aquas and yellows. Mix them up with paler hues of the same colour group, or go for a contrast with white walls and billowing voiles to create a fresh, summery feel all year round. As an interior designer, I usually recommend that people go for neutral colours for the main elements of the room, and then introduce vi-

brant colours in smaller items such as cushions, pictures or accessories. This is because people often make decisions based on current fashion. But the problem is, we aren’t talking about a dress you can leave in the wardrobe if you get fed up with the colour. This is a major part of your home, and if you change your mind about the colour you chose, this can be a major mistake - and expensive to put right! Therefore, if you use a pop of colour in small items, it is not such a major decision to have a change. However, we occasionally have clients who have strong opinions about what they want, and we always discuss this with them. Sometimes, though, they are clear about their ideas, and want to go with their hearts. I can, after all, only advise, as I am not the one who has to live with the

result. In this case, you can see from the photo, the client made a fabulous choice. This rich-green colour changed her lounge from traditional and slightly dated, to vibrant and modern. Although the colour is strong, because it is plain, and surrounded by neutrals, the result was stunning, and she was absolutely right! Naturally, one of the things we check is that the sofas are worth reupholstering. It’s pointless spending money on something that is not of good quality to start wit.

But in this case the sofas were structurally sound, fitted the room well and were very comfortable. There is, of course, the added advantage that the clients know what they are getting. So many fabulous sofa deals turn out to be not so great if the sofa is made of inferior materials and ends up being uncomfortable, or not standing the test of time. So be bold, be daring, and introduce some fabulous colour into your Tenerife home by updating your soft furnishings!

Garden

8th August 2014 - 21st August 2014

By Margaret Tully

F OLLOW I N G last week’s page on beneficial beasties for your garden, here are a few choice ways to combat the pests and diseases which plague your plants.

Thankfully, they do not include the use of chemical sprays or other drastic measures. I have previously touched on the subject of home-brewing liquid feeds for your plants. And here are a few triedand-tested concoctions, with readily accessible ingredients, which are suited for plants in the Canaries. Compost Tea Ingredients *½lb mature compost *½-gallon water *Large bucket *Piece of gauze or sieve Method *Put the compost and water in bucket *Site it somewhere not too hot and not too cold - it has the Goldilocks syndrome *Stir every day for five days *Strain through muslin or sieve into watering can Use this liquid, undiluted, to feed your vegetables straight away as it does not store well. Feed each plant 1-2 cups, but NOT on the plants Warning: Use this feed at the time of planting only. It should NOT be used for at least three weeks before harvesting edibles. Cold tea and a little whisky Method *Make a strong pot of tea, using loose tea leaves if you have them, and let cool *Add few teaspoons of whisky and mix well *Strain off liquid and put used leaves in the compost bin *Pour into a bottle and label Use this as a little pickme-up for your plants, maybe after replanting - or if they have had a hard time with any adverse weather

Tea for two… or a drop of whisky

conditions. Healthy plants are less likely to get attacked by disease, just like us humans. What to do if disease affects your plants Garlic tea: One of the best natural methods for getting rid of fungal diseases in plants is by spraying them with garlic tea. Make this in a teapot, using one or two bulbs, and let cool. When using, dilute to one part tea, 10 parts water. as it is very potent. You can also plant

garlic and onions near mould-prone plants such as courgettes or a vine. This is called companion planting, in which one plant helps another, depending on which one is growing next to it. A really common herb here in the Canaries is Wormwood, (Artemisia canariensis), which is just like Artemisia absinthium, from which the alcoholic drink absinthe derives. Wormwood Brew is fantastic at ridding your plants of insects that

suck them, as well as ants and caterpillars. Pick 30g or ½oz of this herb (you can also buy it in your local herbolario) and ferment it by soaking it in a plastic or glass vessel, filled with natural water. Rain is best, but a bit rare here. After one to four weeks - or until a pretty unpleasant smell goes away - pour it into a sprayer and spray away. There is no need to dilute it because it is totally harmless to you, your pets and beneficial insects. Another use for Wormwood is to help prevent rust on the leaves of plants. Vines are particularly prone to this disease and, simply, by planting Wormwood next to your vine, rust will not be a problem. Just while I remember, spiders are brilliant at protecting your plants

from harm. They catch all sorts of insects in their webs, so don’t brush the webs off your plants. Pests and diseases are, increasingly, causing the non-chemical-using gardener more and more headaches, but companion planting is a good solution. Alongside your tomatoes, grow French Marigolds (Tagetes patula), to deter whitefly, and either Basil, Chives or Mint to deter aphids. Garden Nasturtium planted underneath your fruit trees will keep aphids in check – even the woolly sort! Always make sure you plant plenty of flowering herbs in your garden, or in your pots, as these will attract the beneficial insects. And, of course, the one insect I left out in last week’s column was the bee. How could I have done that? Bees are our most prized insect; they let us know what state our planet is in, well before we know. They pollinate

our plants, making our crops more abundant, and they obviously make honey. But remember, this is the food of the bee so we must not be too greedy! Lavender planted next to your roses will deter aphids. So, always try to think about what plants you are placing next to each other. Your aim is to confuse the predator, making it less likely to settle itself on your plants and devour a whole crop. I also like to make little tinctures of herbs such as thyme, rosemary, mint, and other strongsmelling, oil-omitting herbs. Pick your herb of choice *Fill a third of a jar or half a jar with the dried herb. *Filling half full will make a stronger tincture. *Do not pack down. *Pour boiling water just to dampen all of the herbs. This step is optional, but it helps draw out their beneficial properties. *Fill the rest of the jar (or the entire jar if not using hot water, too) with alcohol and stir with a clean spoon. *Put the lid on the jar. Store the jar in a cool/dry place, shaking daily, for at least three weeks and up to six months. (I usually leave herbs for six weeks). *Strain through cheesecloth and compost the herbs. *Store the tincture in coloured dropper bottles or clean glass jars. NOTE: a tincture can be made in the same way using apple cider vinegar, though it will need to be stored in the fridge and will last 3-6 months only. I use the tincture diluted to clean leaves, with a few drops in the watering can before watering my plants. I hope this has given you a few ideas for dealing with the problem of pests and diseases on the plants in your garden space. And, hopefully, it will make you less likely to use harmful chemicals.

Mazda reach for the Sky!

By Jav MAZDA have confirmed that their new ‘2’ will be the first model to premiere the company’s latest downsized Skyactiv diesel engine.

The Japanese carmaker have also revealed the technical specifications of their new 1.5-litre oil-burner, which promises to be highly efficient and lowpolluting. The new member of the eco-friendly Skyactiv engine family produces 103bhp at 4000rpm and 184lb ft of torque between 15002500rpm. For a diesel certainly, the 1.5 Skyactiv-D features a low 14.8:1 compression ratio, an inter-cooler integrated into the intake manifold for better acceleration response and exhaust-gas recirculation for better economy. Mazda’s start-stop and brake energy regeneration systems ensure that this new 2 will be Euro-6 compliant without the use of expensive exhaust solutions. And, more importantly in CO2-obsessed Europe, the 1.5 SkyactivD will emit less than

90g/km of CO2 say the company. It is based on the Hazumi concept revealed at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, and production will begin next year. Not surprisingly, Mazda are keen to increase their sale volumes in the growing supermini sector, so the 2 will play a key role when it finally hits the market. Hopefully, this efficient engine is matched by the sporty styling of the concept car. It’s certainly another beauty from Mazda, and their updated 2 model really does look the best of the current crop. And if it also improves

on ride/handling of the current 2, Mazda will surely be boasting a clear class leader on their hands. The question is, however, will a relatively big 1.5 engine weigh things down at the front too much? Mazda have a lot riding on this machine, and it is no wonder that the changes are so extensive. The totally redesigned 2 is not just a pretty face, and the attention to detail follows the car inside as well. There are four new trim levels, improved materials plus quality and refinement, and this will undoubtedly make their European rivals sit up and take

notice, when it arrives in the UK early next year. The Hiroshima-based company has added the new 2 to the CX-5, Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 to form a superb collection. It is slightly bigger allround than its predecessor, gaining 160mm in length to 4,060mm, and picking up 25mm in height to 1,500 mm. Its wheelbase stretches 80mm to 2,570mm, but the width stays the same. The bigger body delivers more leg and head room - as well as allround visibility, thanks to a larger windscreen and A-pillars, which shift 100mm further forward.

Despite being labelled as the “Demio” in the official Japanese pictures, this small Fiesta rival will continue to be known as the Mazda 2 in Europe. But unlike the last generation, it will be available as a five-door hatchback only. Mazda have confirmed, from launch, that there will be an initial choice of just two engines: a diesel and petrol with identical 1.5-litre capacities. Both engines will get the Skyactiv treatment. In the petrol’s case, this means it will rely on an extremely high-compression ratio, lightweight engineering and regenera-

tive braking using capacitors. The diesel, meanwhile, will offer a lowcompression ratio to ensure a longer burn. The 2 might also provide the basis for the car-maker’s first electric production vehicle, following a long exhaustive trialling of the last-generation Mazda 2 EVs. The third-generation 2 could even herald the return of the famous Wankel rotary engine. Whatever future tech the small Mazda gets, on the eve of the MX-5 unveiling on 3rd September, the arrival of the new 2 is yet another signal of a product renaissance for the Japanese brand.

Keep those points ON your licence! By Emma at Motorworld

AS many of you are aware, the points system has been in force since July 2006 and has experienced some changes over the years.

Anyone with a Spanish licence starts out with a certain number of points, which can be deducted for various offences.

New drivers with under three years’ experience are given eight points, with a further four being added on when they have completed that period. It brings them up to 12 points, which is the same for all drivers after three years, even if the licence has been exchanged from a different country. For drivers who do not lose any points in the first three years, the points are increased by two points after the third year and then by one more point, giving a maximum of 15 points. But for motorists who have lost all their

points, the licence is returned with just eight. There are three types of offences: Minor, Major and Very Major. There are also parking offences, some of which can lose points. Minor offences are classed as those committed against the rules and regulations of the traffic law (Ley sobre Trafico, Circulacion de Vehiculos a Motor y Seguridad Vial), which are not specifically classified as Major or Very Major. Here are some examples of Major offences (provided they are not considered a crime or felony):

*Breaking the speed limit *Not complying with the law with regards to rights of way, overtaking, changes of direction or reversing, oneway systems, road and path uses, would mean a loss of three or four points *Parking or stopping in a bus lane, on a bend, in a disabled space without a valid permit, in a tunnel, at a junction or in any area which is considered dangerous, or severely hampers the passing traffic, or pedestrians especially *Driving without using the appropriate lights *Driving while using

headphones, or any device that reduces the driver’s attention three points *Driving while using a mobile telephone, or programming a satellite navigator - three points *Not wearing a seat belt - three points *Not respecting the indications of a traffic controller - four points *Failing to respect a red light - four points *Negligent driving - six points Here are some examples of Very Major offences (provided they are not considered a crime or felony): *Not complying with the speed limit *Drunk driving or under

the influence of drugs four to six points *Refusing to comply with a breathalyser test or drug test - six points *Driving in a prohibited direction - six points *Participating in competitions or races which aren’t authorised - six points *Driving a vehicle with radar detection or interference installed - six points *Driving a vehicle without the appropriate licence - four points These offences are also subject to the following fines: Minor - up to 100 euros Major - up to 200 euros Very major - up to 500 euros.

Inkspots make their mark! HAVING been thrust into the Premier league at the start of the season, Inkspots have been on the wrong end of a few hammerings during the first nine weeks. So a hat-tip to them because, not only did they beat Bar 180 D but they also doubled their points tally! Tim hit a maximum

for the hosts, while Jamie replied with his third of the campaign. With Bar 180 A out of action, Phoenix bar took the chance to hit top spot, which they duly achieved by hitting Bar 180 B for seven. Highlight of the night was a singles defeat for Bubbles at the hands of Beck! La Caña Pi-

rates hit fourth place with a win at Gaffers B, while The Pub took the trebles leg to sneak victory at Target Army. Steve fired in his third maximum for the Army. The Shamrocks are on a real roll at the moment, and with a crushing 7-1 success at Chipeque, they extended their lead at

the top of Division 1 to six points. Gaffers A had a tough match at Trap Door which they just about won, via the last rubber, and Emerald Lounge enjoyed a comfortable 6-2 win over Pas O Nadas. Picasso’s A hauled themselves out of the bottom three by taking six points from

Sundowners, while a first-ever home match for Clouseaus saw them tie with the Playboys. It was top v bottom in Division 2 as Chipeque Chippers won every single leg at Ourplace Playgirls. That opened up a five-point gap down to Waterfall Warriors, who chalked up a 6-2 re-

Fantasy Football League returns THE Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League is back for another season!

Registration is now underway and it’s free to enter, so show us

how good a manager you are. Can you topple last year’s winner Steve Schofield (pictured) and scoop the honours? All the Oasis Fm DJs are taking part -

and entering couldn’t be easier. Go to fantasy.premierleague.com and follow the simple instructions. It will take you just a few minutes, and then you can start spending

the £100m each manager is given. When you asked to enter a league go to Private and then enter this code: 405790105927 Once you’ve registered, you have until

11.30am on the opening day of the season to change your squad, so don’t worry about any last-minute transfers. This season, Fantasy managers have plenty to consider after last season’s top scorer, Luis Suarez, joined Barcelona. Suarez racked up an amazing 295 points in just 33 appearances. Liverpool scored 101 times on their way to second place behind champions Manchester City, and they have snapped up Benfica wide man Lazar Markovic. Managers will be watching his points progress, while Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana will be popular at £7.5m and £8.5m each. Manchester United

have snatched Luke Shaw (£6m), and the arrival of playmaker Ander Herrera (£7.5m) will add to the creative talents of Juan Mata (£9m). Arsenal and Chelsea have been busy. Alexis Sanchez is available at a bargain £10.5m, while a fully-fit Theo Walcott is just £9m. Down at the Bridge, Cesc Fabregas will cost £9m, and new striker Diego Costa will be on many a list. West Ham striker Mauro Zarate looks cheap at £6.5m, as does Southampton’s new talisman Dusan Tadic at £7.5m. For local interest Ayoze Perez, who has joined Newcastle from CD Tenerife, is yours for just £5m!

Nearly Showtime!

By Roscoe THINGS are certainly hotting up ahead of the new season, and it seems to me that the heat is affecting a few judgements.

Real Murcia are a great old club, who so nearly gained promotion to La Liga after fine campaign. They just came up short in the play-offs, but were one of the favourites to challenge again this year. But the LFP, who seem to be run with as much competence as FIFA, have kicked them out. It’s a long story, but, in essence, their finances were not sorted out in time and they will be back with the stiffs in Segunda B next season. Mirandes, who dropped into the relegation zone on the last day of the season, have a reprieve and will visit Santa Cruz next month. As the photo here shows (bottom left), the Murcia fans are not happy, and over 500 of them protested outside the LFP offices. I feel for them. The relegation also affected the only Englishman in professional football in Spain. Charlie Dean I’anson has been at Elche for a couple of years and captained the Reserve team last season. He also managed to play a couple of La Liga games, and the young centre-back was set for a loan move to Murcia! That has been axed and he will now join

big-spending Alcorcon, their14th signing, for the season. I’ll be interested to see how he progresses. Back in Santa Cruz, the 6,000th season ticket was sold and support is increasing. The club has sponsored a tram to help push the sales - and you really can’t miss it! Tickets are reasonably priced, and the cheapest will set you back just 150 euros. On the field, Tenerife have gone through the gears against the local part-timers, but were found wanting when they faced Las Palmas on Wednesday. The 2-0 defeat was fair, and you should never read anything

into friendly matches. That said, Tenerife didn’t ever really look threatening. This week, Tenerife completed their seventh signing, and it seems there will be just one more before the season gets underway. In the last few days, they were finally able to get leading target, Diego Ifran (bottom right), inked in. He will be the main striker and, in some ways, the season will revolve around him. If he fires, the team will fly. It’s that simple! Iker Guarrotxena is an interesting capture from Athletic Bilbao. He is a left-winger but can play as either the main striker or a No.10.

At 22, he will improve and looks a shrewd addition. As for Maxi Perez (bottom middle), well he could be anything. He’s been around the South American leagues and is well-seasoned. The Uruguayan can also play on the wing or in attack and, interestingly, he has been a team-mate of Ifran. He was swiftly captured just hours after Ifran joined, and I’m sure that is no coincidence. Perez has played in Chile, Argentina and Mexico - and last season he hit 11 league goals for Phoenix, in Uruguay. A couple of CDT play-

ers are sweating on their futures. Abel has been told to find a new club, and Ayoze Diaz has also been told he can go. It’s a funny decision for me as he did okay after joining in January. The local left-back says he wants to stay and fight for his place. The same goes for Juanjo, who scored a few last season, again after joining in midcampaign. With Ifran, Aridane, Maxi and Nano (who is now staying), he looks the odd one out. There is also one too many central midfielders. Aitor Sanz and Ricardo are safe and, with Vitolo set to lead the team, that leaves

Quique Rivero or Alberto to move on. Both are young, so a loan move seems likely. Finally, a couple of former players have found new homes. Bellvis has joined Charlie at Alcorcon, Iriome has signed for two years at Lugo and Chechu is off to Hercules. And best of luck to Omar Mascarell. Regular readers will know how highly this column rates the Tenerifeborn midfielder. He has joined Derby for the season after impressing for Real Madrid’s first team in America. Mascarell has also inked a new contract at Real, and there is no doubt the Rams have pulled off a real coup.
