EGYPT’S CRASH STRANDS BRITS Issue 927 6th November - 12th November 2015
THE Sinai air crash in Egypt last Saturday, which killed all 224 people on a Metrojet Russian passenger plane, was “most likely” a result of a bomb planted by terrorists. The latest tragedy to hit the region is set to have a massive effect on the country’s vital tourist trade and could lead to another unexpected boost for Tenerife. Continued on page 3

Tour companies consider Canaries Continued from front Thousands of British holiday-makers were set to fly into Sharm elSheikh this month to soak up some winter sun. But the events of this week will ensure that many will have to cancel their holidays, or travel to another destination. And this is where the Canary Islands are set to benefit. Major tour companies are set to offer the archipelago as a replacement for holidays booked in Egypt, which would be the third time in five years that the Islands have benefited. The 2001 uprising against then Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak almost turned into civil war. Battles between loyalists and anti-government supporters led to hundreds of deaths, and the British Government advised against travel to the region. Subsequently, many holiday-makers came here and the influx kickstarted the tourism boom, which continues
today. The archipelago has had a series of record-breaking winters ever since. A year later, Sharm elSheikh was home to a series of shark attacks on human swimmers. The British media dubbed the resort Sharm elShark. Again, this drove tourists away from Egypt and into the welcoming Spanish arms. Now this! As we went to print last night (Thursday) night flight prices to the Canary Islands were noticeably more expensive. Ditto, hotel rooms! And with tour opera-
tors trying to find suitable places for those who no longer wish to holiday in Egypt, it’s clear that a 2011-style boost is heading this way. British Prime Minister David Cameron said yesterday (Thursday) that the downing of the Russian passenger plane was “more likely than not” caused by a bomb. And his Foreign Secretary said there was a “significant possibility” that IS were responsible. But while Philip Hammond did confirm that some holiday-makers would be flying back
from Egypt over the weekend, the Prime Minister warned it could “take some time” to start flying UK tourists back home. Hammond has warned it could take weeks or months before flights between the UK and the Sharm region returned to normal. He hoped that normal services would resume before Christmas, and also felt that those on holiday in the region had no reason to cut their trip short. Tour operators took different views on what they should do...
*Thomas Cook cancelled its flight and holiday programme to Sharm el-Sheikh until 12th November *Thomson Airways along with First Choice, cancelled all outbound flights to Sharm elSheikh, up to and including 12th November *British Airways postponed its Thursday flights to and from Sharm el-Sheikh *EasyJet cancelled all flights to and from the resort yesterday (Thursday) and is keeping future flights “under review” *Monarch cancelled all flights in and out of Sharm el-Sheikh Russian and Egyptian officials have taken a different stance, officially, on what happened. Egypt is leading the investigation, with the help of Russian and other international experts. On Thursday, they dismissed allegations that the Airbus A321 may have been brought down by a bomb. One Egyptian minister said the crash was “not a terror act, it was an accident” But Germany’s Foreign Ministry has urged travellers to avoid the Sinai peninsula altogether with a “partial travel warning”. The Lufthansa group has cancelled all flights to Sharm el Sheikh “because of the current situation on the Sinai Peninsula”, and The Netherlands is advising against travel to and from Sharm el-Sheikh. Investigators will examine the wreckage for traces of explosives, but will not reach their first conclusions for a few months, said Alexander
Neradko, head of Russia’s aviation agency. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said any explanations being put forward “seem like unverified information or some sort of speculation”. Egypt’s Civil Aviation Minister Hossam Kamal said the investigation team had “as yet no evidence or data” to confirm a bomb attack. In the House of Commons, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin made a statement saying: “The decision to suspend flights to Sharm el Sheikh was in the best interest of British tourists.” He also said shortterm measures, including different luggagehanding arrangements, would “allow the estimated 20,000 British nationals in the resort area to fly home”. In the longer term, he said Britain would “need to be confident” there was adequate security in place before scheduled flights could resume. Egypt President Abdel Fattah al Sisi met David Cameron at 10 Downing Street yesterday afternoon (Thursday) for talks. Ironically, the meeting had been planned for weeks, with the topic of action against Terrorism, and safety in Egypt at the top of the agenda. The President said: “We do not want to rush into conclusions. We all share the same concerns. We want to know the reasons behind it. The investigation will be disclosed with all transparency - we have nothing to hide.”

Extra drainage plans to cost extra 200,000 euros THE Cabildo has authorised an expansion of the drainage improvement project in Santa Cruz’s Venezuela Avenue - for another 200,000 euros! Although the Government and Tenerife Council initially approved the action for about 860,000 euros, it was decided to increase the budget and put more than a million euros in total towards the project. This additional cost will be financed by the Cabildo, said President
Carlos Alonso at a press conference. The initial work began last May and is expected to finish inside two months. The project is aimed at addressing a deficiency in the area to take rainwater, which now causes major incidents when heavy rains fall. Alonso said of the extra cost: “It amounts to 213,000 euros and increases the contract period. But it allows us and water company Emmasa to do more than we first planned.”
Theatre-dance festival School drop- is all part of education outs soaring THE percentage of youngsters in the Canary Islands aged 1824, who have failed to continue their education beyond the compulsory stage (ESO), has reached 22.7%. The national average is 20.3%! Figures supplied by the Labour Force Survey (LFS) for the third quarter of 2015, were released by the Education Ministry. These students are classed as drop-outs, and the female rate is 16.1%, getting close to Spain’s 15% target by 2020. The male rate is 24.3% - way above the women and four more than Spain’s 20.3% average. Since 2011, Spain’s drop-out rate has dropped six points, from 26.3% to the current 20.3. By region, the Balear-
ic Islands (27.7%) has a highest percentage of youngsters continuing to study at the end of the ESO (compulsory secondary education), followed by Ceuta and Melilla (25.2%), Andalusia (25.1%), Extremadura (24.2%), Murcia (23.5%), Canary Islands (22.7%), Valencia (22.6%), La Rioja (21.2%) and Castilla-La Mancha (20, 6%). Cataluna (19.7%), is below the national average of 20.3%, followed by Aragon (19.2%), Galicia (17.2%), Castilla y León (16.8%), Asturias (16.2%) and Madrid (15.5%). Three regions have now had drop-out figures below the Spanish target for five years: Navarra (10.7%), Cantabria (9.6%) and the Basque Country (9.4%).
Hope for battered women THE Canary Islands Parliament has approved a plan to protect battered women by guaranteeing them a home. The law will cover women “who suffer male violence, regardless of the occurrence of a protection order”. It promises “an acceptance that for one
month from the request made by the appropriate social services, access to housing with all the necessary supplies will be granted”. The initiative, put forward by Podemos deputy chief Maria del Rio, was debated at length in Parliament, and the project should enter law within six months.
ADEJE has again celebrated its commitment to the arts with its annual Festival of Theatre and Dance, which runs throughout the month.
Creative Development Councillor Alonso Ferrera, announcing the programme, welcomed representatives from performing groups Burka Teatro, Zalatta Teatro, Compañía Entredanza and Teatro La Repúbli-
ca. He told them: “The commitment of the local government is to encourage and support initiatives that add to the quality of life of Adeje’s residents, and support for cultural activities is fundamental. “We are an important tourism destination, but we also understand that supporting the arts is an investment, not a cost, and is part of the overall push to improve education and knowledge.” A “season” tickets for all Festival events is just eight euros, making it
accessible to all. Burka Teatro will stage a performance of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (in Spanish) to open the Festival tonight (Friday) at 9pm, and director Nacho Almenar warns that this version is truer to the Williams original, than the film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. Teleforo Rodríguez, director with Zallata Teatro, presents Una Tarde de Cuento (an afternoon of story-telling) with original songs and music tomorrow (Sat-
urday) at 6pm (underthrees are free, under12s cost five euros). And next Friday (13th) at 9pm, Teatro la Republica presents Los Impostores. Charo Febles outlined the performance of her Compañía Entredanza ballet group, which is a dance-classic special to works by Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, Vivaldi, Pachelbel, Bach, Händel, Liszt and Strauss, supported by Adeje School of Dance and Music students. That takes place on Friday (20th), also at 9pm.
The right to vote A TOTAL of 1,668,886 people from, or living in, the Canary Islands are eligible to vote in next month’s Spanish General Election. Of this number, just over 8% live abroad, but it’s a massive 40% for those with links to La Gomera, which shows the huge migration from the island over the years. Also of interest is the higher number of nonSpanish-born voters registered in Tenerife (63,421), who are allowed to mark an X in the election, which is 8.9% of the 708,902 total here. By provinces, the foreign population makes up 2.75% in Gran Canaria. In Fuerteventura, just 1.6% of its 62,379 voters live abroad, and this figure rises to 2.75% in Lanzarote . Voters living abroad who wish to vote must
make a request to the Provincial Delegation of the Office for their Voter Registration. They have until 21st November. The Electoral Census Office has sent the official application form to all eligible voters. Applications can be sent by internet and it is, therefore, necessary to have a electronic certificate, recognised by the Electronic Headquarters of the INE, or use the key sent with the official form. The form is also available in consulates and on websites pertaining to the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation, plus the Electoral Census Office. The Electoral Roll will be available until Monday (9th Nov) in all municipalities and provincial delegations of the Electoral Census Office.
Teide safeguard TENERIFE Cabildo has approved a plan with the Volcanology Institute of Canarias (Involcan) to reinforce the monitoring and early-warning systems for Teide.
It will cost 720,000 euros,up to the end of 2017, and Cabildo chief Carlos Alonso said: “It is a significant amount to improve the network of stations that exist on Tenerife, but the extra information we gather will reduce any risk that exists.”

Melia’s luxury purchase MELIÁ Hotels International, Spain’s leading hotel company, has added a luxurious Tenerife resort to its portfolio in a prime location.
It is situated along the cliffs of Teno, in the north-west, and is surrounded by the 18-hole Buenavista golf course, designed by the legendary Severiano Ballesteros. The hotel, purchased from the Vincci Group, was previously known as the Vincci Buenavista Golf & Spa. It has been renamed Meliá Hacienda del Conde and will be adapted to the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand standards. The hotel was a project supported by the Island authorities a few years ago, and has now been acquired by the company Nueva Isla Baja. It is perfectly integrated with its natural surroundings and is designed and decorated
in traditional Canary Islands colonial style. The complex enjoys exceptional views over the Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by a protected nature reserve - an idyllic retreat for adult-only guests, for which the new resort hotel is designed. Gabriel Escarrer, Vice-Chairman and CEO of Melia Hotels International, thanked the new owners for their trust in the Meliá brand, and expressed his confidence about the success of the product. He said: “With the addition of this hotel in a magnificent location off the beaten track on the Island of Tenerife, Meliá confirms its leadership in the luxury resorts’ segment. “And it assumes the challenge of creating a new hotel destination that will further extend the Island’s facilities for superior quality tourism in both the leisure and
convention segments.” Meliá Hacienda del Conde will provide 117 spacious, fullyequipped and elegant rooms, as well as a
magnificent YHI Spa the Meliá Hotels & Resorts wellness brand, with treatment rooms, thermal circuit and a full gym.
The hotel also has excellent public areas, including a large lagoonstyle pool, sun-terraces overlooking the sea, as well as the Buenavista
golf course. Among the other new brand attributes, the hotel will open with the exclusive The Level service offered by Meliá Hotels & Resorts. It provides a VIP experience within the hotel, including superior rooms, reserved lounge areas within the resort, private breakfast room and check-in, Loewe premium-brand bathroom amenities and a pillow menu, among other privileges. Spain is a pain for business start-ups SPAIN ranks among worst nations when it comes to starting a business, says a report by the World Bank, which ranks the country fifthbottom of OECD countries.
It dropped from 74th place last year to 82nd in the global rankings of 189 countries listed in the The World Bank Group’s 2016 Doing Business 2016 report. The report looks at countries’ business regulations, including the ease of starting a business, paying taxes and trading across borders. Of the OECD countries, Spain is among the bottom five for starting a business out of the world’s 32 most developed nations ranking only above Poland, Czech Republic, Austria and bottomplace Germany. Spain held its ground in overall terms, remaining in 33rd place overall on the global
rankings in terms of the ease of doing business. It means that although regulations in Spain aren’t among the worst for existing companies, would-be entrepreneurs still face a battle against bureaucracy to get their businesses started. The report states: “Spanish entrepreneurs face regulatory complexity and red tape. They interact with different government levels - the national government, regions (comunidades autónomas), provinces and municipalities - each with its own competencies and legislation.” But it’s not all bleak for the Spanish. The country was praised for measures that saw a greater protection given to minority investors. It also received a pat on the back for its tax reforms, which have reduced rates for corporate income, capital gains and environment taxes, and made it easier to file VAT returns. It was also noted that Spain had reduced the amount allowable for depreciation of fixed
assets, and raised the ceiling for social security contributions - all measures that eased business building in Spain. The report looked at countries’ business regulations, including the ease of starting a business, paying taxes and trading across borders with a total of 10 topics being examined. Although it welcomed initiatives to promote business creation, introduced under Mariano Rajoy’s conservative government, it concluded: “Spain still lags behind high-income OECD economies on the ease of doing busi-
ness.” It called for further labour reforms to boost job creation, and a concerted effort to streamline bureaucracy. “It is important for Spanish policy-makers to continue reforms to create jobs and increase productivity,” it said. “Improving the business climate and removing national, regional and local regulatory barriers should be a priority to facilitate business creation and encourage economic growth. “The country can speed up the pace of regulatory reform to increase competitiveness, and allow firms to make
the most of the opportunities coming out of the crisis.” A recent survey of the country’s start-up ecosystem concluded that although Spain wasn’t the easiest place to start a business, it still boasted many alternatives over other European hubs, and had a thriving entrepreneur industry. “Despite evidence demonstrating that Spain is not the easiest place to start a business, the survey results show that it’s not as bad as it is perceived to be,” concluded Starting up in Spain: The Survey.
“Far from being plain sailing, the initial friction in starting a company demonstrated there are clear barriers to entry, and cultural differences to overcome for the foreigner,” said Tom Evans, from Startups: Made in Spain, which published the survey last month. “At a time when Spain needs jobs, it’s surprising to see bureaucratic red tape getting between founders and the execution of their vision,” added Evans, who insists that Spain is changing and that there are still huge advantages to be found by setting up there. “It is now possible to see the possibilities the economic downturn has facilitated in creating potentially fertile ground for new companies to grow, and create badly-needed jobs,” he said. “All the factors are present to build scalable, innovative companies from Spain. They could just do with increased reduction in some of the bureaucratic red tape and taxation, sooner rather than later.”
Loro Parque’s big surprise, surprise!
LORO Parque has a surprise for visitors with the arrival of two lovely red pandas, from Scotland’s Kingussie’s Highland Wildlife Park and Paradise Wildlife Park, in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. The pandas have a brand-new home, developed by Loro Parque’s team of experts, which matches their natural habitat as far as possible. The building stands out in spectacular fashion, and Loro Parque is proud to exhibit these adorable, charismatic animals to its many international visitors, as well as those from Tenerife and the other Canary Islands. The red panda is con-
sidered by many to be “the prettiest animal in the world”, and even has an annual International Day, on 19th September. It also has various names, often referred to as a “fire fox” in the East because the reddish and orange colours of its fur. It is known as “a traveller of forest tops” as well, and, in general, is similar to raccoons, weasels and ferrets. In its natural habitat, the red panda lives at altitudes between 1,300-4,000 metres, and the Loro Parque installation has been built in such a way that the newcomers can enjoy the shadows of various trees in a cool environment.

South airport heads Europe for tourists
The editor says...

History repeated? THE more the world changes, the more it stays the same, it seems.
A few days ago I was watching an excellent documentary on BBC Four. I love that channel. You can keep your ITV and the X Factor. BBC Four has some brilliant programmes, and this week it aired a documentary called Lockerbie - My Brother’s Bomber. It’s about Ken Dornstein’s search for the truth about what happened to Pan Am Flight 103. He said at the start of the programme that he had never got over the loss of his brother, and he also felt there was more to the story than the official version. There always is, isn’t there? The 90-minute film documents his decadelong quest for the truth. The beauty of this expose is the way he nails lie after lie. He chases down every lead and never gives up when he hits a brick wall. Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was found guilty of 270 counts of murder. But even at his trial,
there were some rather worryingly-unanswered questions. Few believe he worked alone. Dornstein’s exhaustive work exposes the men who helped al-Megrahi. His revelations left former prosecutors and official investigators stunned. There is now real hope that the other people involved will face charges and be brought to justice. Just a few hours after watching this, the phrase “Lockerbie-style bomb” was all over the rolling news channels. A bomb was planted inside the hull of a plane after passing through some lax security at a low key airport. The atrocity was an act of revenge against the people who had bombed a Middle East country, killing many innocent women and children. For the American attack on Tripoli in 1986, which resulted in the bombing of the American Pan Am plane, read the events of last week. A few weeks after Russian attacks on Syria, a Russian plane falls out of the sky. As Mark Twain said: “The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour.”

NO other airport in Europe has a larger circulation of tourists than Tenerife South, or Reina Sofia, to give its official title, with 93% of passengers using the facilities either starting or finishing their holiday. An internal survey by Spanish airport authority AENA suggests that this percentage is unparalleled on the continent, which seems remarkable considering the size of Tenerife South. The remaining minority of passengers using the terminal are travelling for personal reasons (4%), business
(2%) or other reasons (1%). Of the tourists, 92% are foreigners and only 8% Spanish. And the prototype user is a woman aged between 30 and 49 years. That said, is it an airport prepared for the future? And will there be constant growth? All will be revealed in a report on the long-term future of the airport, currently being developed, and AENA forecasts seem to respond favourably to any issues which may have been raised. Today, Tenerife South is able to handle 12 mil-
lion passengers a year. The average of the last 15 years is around nine million. Only in 2009 and 2010 - the most severe crisis years because of the worldwide recession were figures under eight million recorded. And the airport is also among Spain’s most profitable. The Director Plan of 2001-2002 stated that the airport could comfortable service 10 million people a year. Technological advances, including changes in the habits of passengers (a high percentage of them come with a board-
ing pass from the hotel or from home) allow superior manoeuvrability to the provisions established since the beginning of the century. Meanwhile, the extension of the terminal building - known as T-2 already in operation as a module with 32 counters, by which 300,000 passengers parade per year, is the equivalent of 2,000 flights. The second step is to convert this building, which is annexed to the main facility in the boarding area. And it could be fully rolled out in 2017.
Divorced? Taking a child abroad may spell trouble FOLLOWING separation or divorce by residents in Spain, there is significant potential for conflict when one parent wishes to take his/her child to live with them overseas - for example, back to the UK. This matter must be managed with great care to avoid committing a criminal act. If a parent plans to live with the children in another country permanently, be aware that this requires the agreement and consent of the other parent. This permission must be obtained unequivocally and, ideally, in writing to avoid conflict should the other party have a change of mind. But when it is not possible to obtain consent amicably, a Court Order must be sought. Obtaining Consent To maximise the chances of a Court granting custody and permission, the case must be prepared professionally. It is important to establish a visiting system, so the other parent can have access to the child for a length of time which reflects the geographical
distance between them. If the dispute is not settled legally in Court, taking the child overseas without consent and a Court order, without establishing regular visiting rights for the other parent, is a criminal act, considered child abduction or kidnapping. Child kidnapping If the child is taken abroad without consent, the other parent can begin legal proceedings, requesting the return of the child under the Hague Convention of 25th October, 1980, on Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. Under this law, it is likely that you and your child will be forced to return to Spain. A formal application must be made for custody of the child, and a decision on the place of residence. During this legal conflict, both parents and the child must stay in Spain. When considering an application for a Court order, or to challenge a Court order, the most important consideration is the welfare of the child: his or her new home life, education, visitation access and regular access
to both parents. These are the issues the Court will take into account. Professional Advice It is highly recommended that you seek permission, and take care of any potential conflict before leaving Spain with the child. Reaching an agreement may cause a departure delay but will, in the long-term, lead to a more stable and amicable solution. profits soar Be proud to remember THE Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal, in support of Remembrance Day, is upon us again, and officials are aware of the current financial situation - and rogue collectors!
Kelly, who organises the local Poppy Day Appeal, says: “The generous response from Tenerife people will enable the Legion to continue its work, helping those ex-service personnel and their dependants in need, especially those in the Canary Islands. “Thanks to your immense kindness, our 2014 Appeal raised 14,044.03 euros. And should you require poppies or a collection tin, please contact us on 922 786 777.” Many have already been distributed throughout the South, and will be collected after Remembrance Day (11th November). And as well as tributes throughout the Commonwealth on that day, religious services are always held on the nearest Sunday. Kelly adds, with a note of caution: “Ensure that your donation goes into a genuine Poppy Appeal collecting box. Please give generously, and wear your poppy with pride.” The poppies are a reminder of the end of the First World War hostilities, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, and of the millions who lost their lives. The Royal British Legion, a one-off organisa-
tion, is run by itself, and though it recognises other charitable organisations, it is not related to them. The service will be followed by a joint charity event between Arona’s Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio Lions Club and the British Legion, with all proceeds going to the latter. It takes place at the Albatros Bar in Silencio from 1pm, and all the artistes appearing have kindly donated their time and talent free, in support of this excellent cause. Aidy Evans will compere the proceedings, and the Lions are providing a burger stand and raffle. There’s topclass entertainment on offer, and an excellent afternoon is guaranteed. RYANAIR enjoyed a “bumper summer”, with half-year profits soaring 37% - thanks to August’s soggy weather.
The no-frills carrier reported an after-tax profit of 1.1bn euros (£800m) for the six months to 30th September. Chief executive Michael O’Leary said a “very rare confluence
of favourable events” helped boost earnings during the period. The Irish budget airline credited the strong pound and savings on fuel, alongside “adverse” weather in northern Europe. The company said it was the first EU airline to carry 10 million passengers in one month, in July, and said it notched up a 13% rise in traffic during the six-month period. It claimed that millions of customers
switched to Ryanair for its “Always Getting Better” customer-experience programme, which evolved from a decision to improve its image. And Ryanair is raising its full-year traffic target to 105 million - up 16% on last year’s total. A statement added: “In the next six months, customers will enjoy further improvements, including our personalised website, new cabincrew uniforms, in-flight menus, new Sky interiors, better seating and
defibrillators fitted on all our aircraft.” Looking further ahead, it expects its fuel-hedging strategy to deliver a 430m-euro (£308m) savings in its next financial year. “We plan to pass on these savings to our customers in the form of lower airfares, particularly as we grow capacity quickly in major markets such as Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the UK in 2016.”
More work for foreigners, despite the jobless figures THE 29% rate of unemployment among foreign residents in Spain far exceeds the Spanish nationals’ rate of 21.1%. But the “autonomo” fees have dropped somewhat, to make it easier for new businesses to open. And every autonomous region in Spain, barring Ceuta,
reported a rise in the number of foreigners employed on an “autonomo” (independent professional) basis. Regions with the greatest rises in the number of self-employed foreigners are: Catalonia (+4,498), the Balearic Islands (+4,339), the Valencia Region (+2,526), Andalucía (+2,420) and
Madrid (+1,332). Areas with the fewest number of self-employed foreign workers are Extremadura, Galicia and Asturias. The Chinese, who have more people registered as “autonomo”’ than any other nationality, are followed by the Italians, Moroccans, Pakistanis and
Bulgarians. The majority of foreigners working on an “autonomo” basis are in the commercial sector (29%) and then the hostelry sector (23%), with significant increases in the real-estate sector (+14.5%), manufacturing (+14.1%) and artistic activities (+12.5%).

No cops, no help, and It’s all systems go for no solution! Santa Cruz shipyard PROBLEMS concerning the lack of police officers in several areas of South Tenerife have been welldocumented. Now, though, it is becoming very serious.
Last Saturday morning, for example, at the Guardia Civil’s Las Americas headquarters, there was just one copper operating on the front and two others who were in a single patrol vehicle, dealing with the custody of two detainees, and their subsequent transfer to Court. According to sources who leaked the data to local media, it was initially envisaged that a fourth police officer would be available to collect complaints. However, one of the officials who should have formed the only active patrol in the South, fell ill and could not go to work. That led to the main desk remaining closed until 2.30pm, and the officer set to attend the complaint office left to go on patrol. A large number of staff leaving Las Americas, together with staff holidays, has caused this situation. The shocking news has been backed up by
an El Fraile resident, whose home was broken into and items stolen while he slept. According to the victim, shortly before 6am on Saturday, two men entered his house via the balcony of his apartment and stole a 32in TV and an Xbox. Then they went through the front door of the residence and jumped a wall. At that moment, they fell and broke the TV. A neighbour saw the thieves flee and reported what he saw to the theft victim. But while attempting to file the complaint and collect fingerprints of the theft, the neighbour experienced various obstacles, and he became so disillusioned that he gave up trying to file a report. The first call to the police took place at 6.40am, when he was told the police would be there in half-anhour. At 8.34am he called again and the answer was: “Wait a little while, I have no people here.” At 9:39am there was a third call from the El Fraile neighbour, who was told: “Notice has already been given to the local police to go there.” He made a fourth call at 5.37pm and the police finally arrived almost an hour later, at 6.30pm.
Bikers in protest over dangerous guard-rails AROUND 7,000 motor- cyclists congregated in Madrid on Sunday in the hope of persuading authorities to remove or modify the “dangerous” metal guard-rails on Spain’s roads.
They arrived from all over Spain to protest at a regular meeting place, next to Real Madrid’s Bernabeu Stadium. Juan Esteban, Presi-
dent of the “At Ground Level” bikers’ club, said members were fed up seeing fellow riders suffering lethal injuries or amputations on a regular basis “because of these blasted guardrails”. Alicia Sornosa, who has ridden her motorcycle around the world, called on authorities to redesign the rails, at least, to render them less of a threat. The protest ended with a minute’s silence, in honour of bikers who had died over the past year.
THE new Santa Cruz shipyard will be operational within a year to repair ships and floating platforms, and project leaders this week laid the first stone! The yard, in the Dique del Este, will hire 60 new members
of staff - half of them naval and industrial engineers and the rest comprising technical personnel, said Jonathan Perez, head of Tenerife Shipyards, the company running the scheme. Once it gets the goahead for repairs,
ships of up to 230 metres long and 36m wide, will be catered for. And Perez expects income to be over 30m euros in the first year. The early work will consist of repairing oil platforms, and a second phase with a floating dock in front of the
shipyard, will be installed late next year. Six million euros will be spent on the project, of which a total of 2.7m euros will go towards civil works, and the remainder on the purchase and installation of the necessary machinery.
Householders pay more for electricity than companies SPANISH consumers paid 52% more for their electricity consumption at home during the last quarter of 2014 than they did during the same 2008 period.
It has been calculated as an 81-euro rise per megawatt, per hour (MWh) - nearly twice as much as the European Union average of 42 euros per megawatt. A comparative study between prices in Europe and the US, carried out by electricity expert David Robinson, proved to be a real shock. The Spanish price increase meant it was the fourth country in which the cost of electricity was highest by the end of last year throughout Europe, behind Denmark, Germany and Ireland only. However, the report states that the average price of electricity for businesses in Spain
went up by a far lesser rate: just 9% for medium-sized businesses and only 7% for large companies. These rates are more on par with the average increases found in the rest of Europe. Robinson warned that Government meddling within the industry left the small consumer punished most. The rise in electricity costs has been put down to taxes, fees and other government regulatory tariffs, which account for 73% of the increase loaded on the small-consumers’ bills since the start of the economic crisis. For medium-sized businesses, government
tariffs make up just 28% of the total electricity price, while it’s just 20% for larger companies. Nevertheless, the expert said that these Government fees were not as high as they were, and have actually decreased slightly since the 2013 energy reform bill. According to Robinson, if the Government left managing electricity costs to experts, we would generally pay less for our energy bills - and the sector would become much more efficient! He suggested the Government should think about financing publicspending projects, such as investment money
for renewable energy, with money put aside for the annual budget, rather than through revenue generated from electricity prices. Finally, Robinson calculated that electricity prices within the EU rose 34% between 2008 and 2014, but only 18% in the US. In the case of industry, the increase has been much less: 22% in Europe and just 6% in US territory. The higher EU figures have been put down to a greater Government interest in Europe, because production costs are generally the same in both parts of the world. And it doesn’t look as though energy prices are set to be lowered yet in Spain, despite the new tariffs now in force. Consumer organisation Facua reported that the average consumer’s bill had gone up 8% during the first nine months of this year, compared with the same period in 2014.

Bullfighting’s cash concern EUROPE is finally turning its back on bullfighting, the European Parliament voting overwhelmingly against financing part of the industry with public subsidies.
While the EU has never actually funded the art of bullfighting, money allocated to the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC) can go to breeders of fighting bulls indirectly. Florent Marcellesi, a member of political party European Greens, who promoted the initiative, said: “This is a great victory. European citizens no longer want to subsidise anything that involves killing animals.” The vote distribution shows clear lines dividing northern and southern countries, rather than left-wing and right-wing political beliefs. Yet the vote risks
being more symbolic than anything else. Despite the victory, there is still a long way to go before bull-breeders lose their 130m euros a year from the European budget, in Marcellesi’s estimates, based on official data. The chamber must now secure support for its decision from the European Council, made up of the heads of state or governments of EU members. After that, agricultural policy regulations will have to be altered to include the changes voted on in parliament. The change, introduced via an amendment to the 2016 budget, states that the EU’s agricultural policy “should not be used for the financing of lethal bullfighting activities.” Doing so would constitute “a clear violation of the European convention on animal protection” at cattle farms. Farming and cattle subsidies are based on the land surface reported by each owner, with-
out taking into account what specific kind of agricultural activity goes on there. The newly-approved amendment would require a change to PAC rules, which requires approval by the member states, and certainly won’t happen in time to affect the 2016 budget. The European Greens has introduced similar amendments in the past, but this is the first time the proposal has received such a majority support. The text asking to suppress funding for bull breeders was backed by 438 MEPs and rejected by 199, while 50 abstained. The vote distribution shows clear lines dividing northern and southern countries, rather than left-wing and right-wing political beliefs. While some members of the European People’s Party Group voted against the subsidies, nine of the 14 Spanish Socialists in the chamber rejected eliminating them.

Canary unemployment grows THERE was mixed news for last month’s Canary Islands jobs’ figures. Unemployment increased by 4,849 compared with September.
That’s a 2% increase, which means the number of unemployed in the archipelago totals 247,162 people officially, according to the

Boat people rescued A TOTAL of 18 African immigrants arrived this week in Los Cristianos port after being rescued about 90 miles south of Tenerife. A small boat carrying the group was abandoned once the rescue took place. It is understood that it left Africa

rity. But the October rise is expected because
short-term summer contracts come to an end. However, in the yearly data, the number of jobless in the archipelago is 18,629 people fewer than in October 2014, which is a fall of 7.01%. Santa Cruz de Tenerife experienced a greater increase in monthly unemployment, where the number of jobless people went up by 3,473 (+3.09%), as opposed to 1,376 more
unemployed (+1.06%) in Las Palmas. Also, when it comes to genders in the Canary Islands, there are still more women out of work - 131,648 - while the men’s tally is 115,514. In the Canaries’ high tourist season, unemployment increased in the services sector by 3,060, reaching 184,614 people, while the only area where the number of unemployed fell was in construc-
tion, which dropped by 89. But with a jobless total of 31,476, it remains one of the highest unemployed sectors. As for the entire country, the number of unemployed people registered at the offices of the Public Employment Services (formerly INEM) increased by 82,327 in October, up 2% from the previous month, to an overall total of 4,176,369.

Record-breaking migrants in Europe A MONTHLY record of 218,394 migrants and refugee arrivals - almost as many as last year’s entire total - reached Europe by sea in October. The number reaching Greece was 210,265, and for Italy it was 8,129, according to the UN agency. Many are refugees from Syria but, tragically, at least 70 people drowned trying to reach Greek islands in the past week or so. The bodies of four men were recovered from the Aegean Sea on Monday after their boat sank. And another seven people were missing off the island of Farmakonisi. On Sunday, the bodies of 10 people were recovered from a capsized boat, a short distance from Samos. Six of the dead were children, and another child’s body was found on a beach. This year alone, 3,440 migrants have drowned, or have been declared missing, while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, says the UN agency. The International Organisation for Migration says more than 400 people died while travelling to Greece. According to the UN, 744,175 have arrived on Europe’s shores, the vast majority on Greek
islands such as Lesbos and Samos, where most migrants and refugees head. Most migrants arrive packed into unseaworthy boats, having paid huge sums to peoplesmugglers. Rough seas have made the crossing from Turkey perilous, yet worsening weather conditions appear to have had no effect on the numbers trying to leave. Many head north, via the Balkans to Germany, hoping to get asylum. Germany expects at least 800,000 asylumseekers this year, and some estimates put it as high as 1.5 million - at least four times the number who arrived last year. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been trying to reach an agreement with her coalition partners on restricting the numbers heading for her country. Horst Seehofer, her Christian Social Union (CSU) ally, is pushing for transit zones to be set up to process arrivals near the country’s borders. Mrs Merkel’s CDU party backs the idea, but Social Democrat leader Sigma Gabriel is opposed to the zones, amid concerns that they might resemble detention camps.
THERE was no official opening of the Currencies Direct branch in the South of Tenerife when they opened their doors last year.
But the team certainly made up for it by celebrating the branch’s first year in Los Cristianos. Over 100 guests enjoyed the event, including some well-known faces from the Tenerife property and legal world, and some of the many clients who have used their services. Peter Loveday, Director of Southern Europe, and Ignacio Ortega, Regional Manager of Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands, both flew in for the event. Peter thanked all the clients and partners for their tremendous support, saying: “It has been another exciting
and extremely busy year. “Currencies Direct have been working with clients in Tenerife since 2004, and have had a permanent member of staff on the Island for
more than 5 years. “We are delighted to be the first and only currency provider to have an office in the Canary Islands.” He summarised the evening by saying Donna Dent had
been a welcome addition to the team. Peter also thanked Donna and Carol Schleisman, Business Development Executive for Currencies Direct in the Canaries, for their efforts in making the branch and the evening such a success. And, while raising a glass to the anniversary of the branch, he also toasted Carol and her husband, John, on their wedding anniversary, which fell on the same day. Carol said: “We have a growing team of partners here in Tenerife and the other Canary Islands, which means we have helped a lot of new customers and are easily accessible for existing clients. “This evening is to say thank you to all of them.” Currencies Direct can be contacted on 922 971 781.

A modern ape, from 11 million years ago THE discovery of fossil remains of a small, fruit-eating female ape has enabled scientists to shed new light on the evolutionary history of modern apes. Its well-preserved, partial skull and skeleton of a gibbon-like creature, found by scientists in Catalonia, belonged to an ape, living in Spain around 11.6 million years ago. It lived in a warm, wet, forested region, teeming with animals, including elephant relatives, rhinos and sabre-toothed predators. The ape, weighing 9-11lbs (4-5kg), was given the scientific name of Pliobates cataloniae and nicknamed “Laia”. Paleobiologist David Alba, from the Catalan Institute of Paleontology, near Barcelona, said: “There is no living primate like Pliobates, which exhibits a unique combination of modern, ape-like features with
other, more primitive ones. “We can imagine a small ape, like the smallest living gibbons, with a gibbon-like appearance regarding the cranium, but with different body proportions: less-elongated arms and hands.” Alba said Pliobates, which lived during the Miocene epoch, moved through the forest canopy differently from today’s gibbons. It used slow, cautious climbing, like the loris - a more primitive primate - while sometimes hanging below branches. The remains comprise 70 bones or bone fragments, including a skull, exceptionally complete for a primate from that time. Its teeth look primitive
compared with today’s apes, including both the small-bodied “lesser apes” like gibbons and siamangs, and the largerbodied “great apes” like orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees. The skull exhibits features including overall shape similar to today’s apes, although it resembles gibbons more closely than great apes. The elbow and wrist are similar to today’s apes. But the external, bony ear is more primitive than in living apes and monkeys. “Pliobates suggests that small-bodied apes played a much more important role in the origin of extant apes than previously recognised,” said Alba. “And their last common ancestor in several respects, skull shape
and body size, might have been more gibbonlike than previously thought,” Gibbons are small, arboreal apes from rainforests in parts of Asia. Alba said the evolutionary divergence of gibbons and great apes occurred between 20 and 15 million years ago, meaning Pliobates, because of its age, cannot be the last common ancestor of today’s apes and the human lineage. But Pliobates might have descended from an ape that lived just before this evolutionary split. “As a result, Pliobates gives us insight as to how this common ancestor would have been,” added Alba. The research appears in the science journal.

Moroccan ISIS suspects held SPANISH police have arrested three suspected Moroccan terrorists, thought to have been planning ISIS attacks in Spain. All three, living in Madrid, were held in the early hours of Tuesday morning and were, say sources, “prepared to carry out terrorist acts at any time”, similar to those that have taken place recently in neighbouring countries. Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said that in contrast to other recent jihadist terrorism-related arrests in Spain, which have been connected to groups seeking to recruit ISIS members, the trio “were ready to attack and had access to weapons”. In telephone and internet conversations, monitored by security forces, they were alleged to have said that they “had to act in Spain now” without specifying how. The operation is still ongoing, with searches being carried out at the homes of the three detainees, all aged around
25, who have been living in the Spanish capital for several years, according to radio network Cadena SER. The operation, coordinated by the High Court Public Prosecutor, was carried out by officers from the National Police in Cañada Real, a shanty town on the outskirts of Madrid, known as a “supermarket” for drugs. That’s where two of the suspects were arrested, and the third one was held in the Vallecas neighbourhood. Spain has carried out more operations against ISIS than any other European country so far. Counting Tuesday’s arrests, 60 people relating to Islamist terrorism this year, have now been detained there. Another 27 suspects have been arrested in other countries, principally Morocco, concerning the recruitment of terrorists for ISIS in Spain, according to the Interior Ministry.

Brits can’t stand long-haulflights BRITISH travellers are keen to fly away on holiday … but only so far, because they are restricting their flying time to an average of six hours and 11 minutes only. A poll of nearly 2,500 UK holiday-makers found that two-thirds take into account the duration of the flight to their destination when considering where to go. This rules them out for trips to South-east Asia, the west coast of America and Australia, among others.
The survey - by flight comparison website Jetcost.co.uk also polled 250 people each from Germany, Spain, Italy and France, and found that the continental holiday-makers were more willing to travel further. The Germans, who proved best at enduring long-haul flights, were prepared to travel 15½ hours. The French were next with 12½ hours, followed by the Spanish with nine hours, while the Italians
were even less patient than the Brits, putting up with flights of under four hours onlys. The British, when asked why they didn’t fancy sticking it out for longer than six hours on a plane, cited cabin fever, aeroplane toilets and potential emergencies at home. A fifth said they’d get bored on a long flight and 17% said they were worried about deep-vein thrombosis. Antoine Michelat, Jetcost.co.uk co-founder,
said it was a “shame” they wouldn’t consider longer journeys. “But it’s even more shocking that we’re not the worst, with Italians pretty much choosing to stay within Europe,” he added. Even so, with their sixhour flight window, Brits could still see much of Europe, including Moscow and St Petersburg, as well as the Canary Islands and Egypt. And Turkey, Jordan and West Africa are also just in reach.
Walking in sunshine MORE than five million tourists visited Tenerife last year and, though the good weather and the facilities remain the strongest factors, other growing markets are pulling in the punters.
One factor gaining popularity is walking, and walking activities. And 16% of tourists who arrived in 2014 walked a trail, making a total of 775,000 people. Against the previous year’s figure, the activity grew by 2.3% according to data from Tenerife Tourism. The Cabildo said the walkers brought in a daily spend of around 100 euros. And compared with other visitors, their spend-perperson is higher than the overall tourist average because they normally stay longer.
The Island generates an estimated 600m euros per annum from this new sector, added the Cabildo, which accounts for 17% of the total income from tourist spending. Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabé said: “Although the number of walkers in the total of tourists is not too high a percentage, this spending, in absolute terms, is widely spread throughout the Island, and not only in cities. “And it is growing as people understand and take advantage of the Island’s natural beauty.” The biggest nationality on the tourist trails is the German, with 32% of all walkers from there. The Spanish and British markets come next. The “average” walkers are 48, have an annual income of over 53,000 euros and travel in pairs, which makes them the ideal holidaymakers.
Andalucia battered by storms SPAIN continues to be on dangerous weather alert after vicious storms and high winds battered Andalucia over the weekend. At least 300 incidents were reported in Andalucia with extensive damage to coastal restaurant Chiringuito Servando, between Torremolinos and central Malaga. Manager Agustin Jimenez said water
flooded in to the extent that it was over a metre deep. Mr Jimenez, who paid for a 5,000-euro refurbishment last year, only to see rhe place almost wiped out, said: “Luckily, there weren’t clients that day as it wasn’t good weather, so it could have been a lot worse.” The Velez-Malaga beaches also experienced their worst damage in 20 years.

Against all odds Collins is back! BRITISH drummer- cum- singer Phil Collins is going back to work following a fouryear “retirement” break, and a reissue of his solo albums.
Collins, who’s already planning a tour and is “raring to go,” says: “I’m no longer officially retired - the horse is out of the stable and it would be silly to not make more music.” The 64-year-old said in 2011 that he was leaving music to be “a full-time father to my two young sons”.
Collins has not released a full album of new material since 2002’s Testify, though he topped the chart in 2010 with a collection of Motown covers called Going Back. In 2007, a Genesis reunion tour left him with a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands, leaving him unable to play the drums. His new band features Jason Bonham, son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, and Collins told Rolling Stone magazine: “I don’t think I want a very long tour. “But I would like to play the stadiums in Australia and the Far
East, and that’s the only way to do that. Yet there’s a part of me that just wants to do theatres, so we’ll see.” Collins, one of the alltime successful songwriters and performers, is one of only three recording artists, alongside Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, to have sold over 100 million albums worldwide both as a solo artist and as a band member. His No.1 singles include A Groovy Kind of Love and Against All Odds. And he has been honoured with seven Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards, an Oscar and two Golden Globes.
Die hard Stan dies FORMER American Senator Fred Dalton Thompson, who went from politics to Hollywood and back again, has died at the age of 73.
The Tennessee lawyer appeared in at least 20 films and also in the TV series Law & Order, in which he played District Attorney Arthur Branch between 2002 and 2007. His film credits include In The Line Of Fire, The Hunt For Red October, Die Hard 2 and Cape Fear. In the early 1990s, Thompson was bored with his 10-year stint in Hollywood and wanted to enter public service. He won a 1994 special election for Democrat
Al Gore’s former seat overwhelmingly, and was re-elected in 1996 for a six-year term. But he retired from his seat when his term expired in January 2003, saying: “I simply do not have the heart for another six-year term.” After his Senate service, he began his role in the NBC drama series, alongside stars including Sam Waterston and Alana de la Garza. Thompson returned to politics in 2007 when sought the Republican presidential nomination. But he dropped out in January 2008 after under-performing in the early stages. A family statement said Thompson died after a recurrence of lymphoma. It read: “It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of grief that
we share the passing of our brother, father and grandfather, who died peacefully in Nashville. “Fred was the same man on the floor of the Senate, the movie studio, or the town square ... of his home.” In January 2002, his daughter Elizabeth Thompson Panici, 38, died following an accidental overdose of a prescription drug. That same year Thompson, son of a car salesman, married political and media specialist Jeri Kehn. He was born in Sheffield, Alabama, and grew up in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, where he was a star athlete. He was just 17 when he married Sarah Lindsey and the couple, who divorced in 1985, lived in public housing for a year as newly-weds. Thompson graduated in 1964 from Memphis State University, earned his law degree at Vanderbilt University in 1967, and went on to become a Nashville lawyer. In 1969, he became an assistant US attorney, and then volunteered to work on the re-election campaign for former Senator Howard Baker. Four years later, Mr Baker selected him to be chief minority counsel on the committee investigating the Watergate scandal, which led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation.

Package holidays’ boom TRAVEL agents in the UK have already sold more than 170,000 package holidays in the Canary Islands for next summer, which is 38% more than this year. Delighted Canarian Tourism Minister Maria Teresa Lorenzo, said: “This is a good tourist time. We are going the right way, and the total scheduled airline capacity to the Canary Islands has experienced an 2.5% increase. “All this data, together with the improved connectivity with the main-
land market, allows us to expect a great summer season in 2016.” For its part, the Gran Canaria Cabildo said that airline seats from the UK to the island this winter had risen by 24.6%. According to the island’s President, Antonio Morales, this data not only “confirms the bonanza of the British market on the island, but reveals a significant growth potential.” He added: “The island is getting full, and it is very difficult to book a bed!”
El Fraile school robbed again POLICE are seeking a trio who, in just one week, committed three robberies in El Fraile’s public school. They stole various electronic equipment such as computers, laptops and stereos. School director Antonia Maria Leon, said: “ In all three cases, the facility’s alarm was working and Arona Local Police went to the scene. But they have so far failed to catch the perpetrators.”
The last of the episodes occurred during Monday afternoon and, just like other occasions, three hooded people forced an aluminium door and accessed to two departments of the nursery and primary education centre. They also lifted a number of computers from a classroom. In the two previous robberies, the thieves stole five 22inch televisions, eight radios, a couple of laptops and a sound system.

Barca star tax fiddle may prove so costly B A R C E L O N A’ S Argentine star Javier Mascherano has admitted in court that he did not cough up all of his taxes in Spain after moving from Liverpool.
The midfielder told a Barcelona court that he failed to pay nearly 1.5 million euros in taxes owed for 2011 and 2012. Mascherano, 31, who has played for Barcelona since 2010, was accused by Spain’s tax office of concealing part of what he earned in image rights during those two years. The court’s press office said the player had already paid back the sum he owed. And with that admission, prosecutors and the player’s lawyers are expected to reach a deal to keep the case from going to trial. Mascherano spent a
few minutes in court only and was not questioned by prosecutors. The Superior Court of Justice in Catalonia had earlier this month ordered that the case be heard. The Argentina international faced counts of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of 1.5m euros related to alleged undeclared earnings on his image rights in 201112 via companies set up in the US and Portugal. Spain’s tax law allows a player to sell up to 15% of his image rights to a company. But the
country’s tax authorities claimed the 31-yearold did not pay taxes on those earnings, despite having become a Spanish resident. Mascherano, who had not spoken publicly on the matter, paid the money owed, as well as interest of 200,000 euros, in September. Authorities said Mascherano owed 587,822.01 euros for 2011 and 968,907.76 for 2012. The court claimed that Mascherano did not report his Nike earnings from a holding company in the US, nor his image-rights earnings in Portugal. The South American is not the only Barcelona player facing tax evasion charges. Mascherano’s Argentine compatriot, Lionel Messi, and his father, Jorge, are pending trial for tax fraud. The two are accused of not pay-
ing £3.4m in tax on earnings from the player’s image rights between 2007 and 2009. Messi and his father, who is also his agent, have denied any wrongdoing. A separate court in Madrid is hearing a lawsuit that accuses former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell of evading taxes after misappropriating funds to hide the cost of the transfer fee paid to acquire Brazil striker Neymar from Santos in 2013. Meanwhile, Neymar has had some of his assets frozen in Brazil because of tax-fraud accusations. The 23-year-old striker is also being targeted by Spanish authorities over irregularities in his transfer to Barcelona. Spain’s tax office is also investigating midfielder Xabi Alonso’s taxes for 2010, when he played for Real Madrid before moving to Bayern Munich in 2014.

Horror train-crash driver’s jail threat TRAIN driver Francisco Jose Garzon Amo faces a prison sentence after being involved in one of Spain’s worst rail disasters, in which 80 people died and many more were injured.
Public Prosecutors, who want him jailed for four years, are also demanding that the victims’ families receive a total of nearly 43 million euros in compensation. Garzon was driving the high-speed train which went off the rails
on 24th July, 2013, and ploughed into a siding near the north-western city of Santiago de Compostela. Investigators discovered that Garzon had been talking on the phone shortly before the train crashed as it hurtled round a sharp bend at 179km/hr (110 mph) - more than double the speed limit for that stretch. The Public Prosecutor’s office, in Galicia’s north-western region, recommended in a statement that he be tried for 80 counts of reckless homicide and 144 counts of injury, receive a four-year jail sentence and be banned from driving trains for six years.

Safety concern leads to kids’ app being pulled AN app for childmonitoring has been withdrawn after security specialists raised concerns about its safety, despite its popularity with parents.

Ecuador back in the picture SPAIN has returned 74 colonial and 49 pre-Columbian works of art to Ecuador, some 22 years after the former were handed to a museum for restoration. And 12 years after Madrid police discovered the latter during a raid concerning part of a money-laundering and drug-trafficking case. The Museo de America took custody of the artworks from a former Ecuadorian ambassador and Interpol,
respectively. Almost a decade after police seized hundreds of archaeological pieces, Spain notified its embassy in Colombia that they originated in several countries in the north of South America. Columbia, after technical consultation, claimed 691 works and, in 2014, determined that another 151 belong to Ecuador. About a third of those pieces were said to belong to
the country’s cultural heritage. The 74 pieces, acquired legally at the time by the former Spanish ambassador to Ecuador, were given to the Museo de América for restoration on condition that they were given back when requested. In June, the central court of Madrid ruled in favour of the colonial and pre-Columbian works being repatriated.
sion (KCC) has warned existing users to find alternatives after having it removed from the Google Play store. Security analysts raised concerns about the app, with one company describing its security flaws as “catastrophic”. Citizen Lab, based at the University of Toronto, said the problems could lead to a “mass compromise” of all users. It said that children’s personal details were not stored securely, and that the parental filters applied were easy to turn off. However, KCC said the decision to have the app pulled was made before the security concerns were raised. South Korea’s government passed a law in April which meant all new smartphones sold to people aged 18 and under had to be fitted with software that could be used to snoop on their social media activity. Smart Sheriff, one of more than 10 state-approved apps, was advertised as being able to keep children safe from pornography and bullying threats. Moiba, the Smart Sheriff developer, insists the security vulnerabilities have since been fixed.
dent, which has raised questions about the railway’s safety systems. Judges interrogated several officials from the state railway company Adif, but dropped charges against all of them. Victims’ families say the driver was not the only one responsible and have demanded a Parliamentary Commission to investigate the causes of the crash. A court in Galicia, which finished its crash investigation at the beginning of the month, said experts had agreed that exces-
sive speed was “the sole cause of the accident”. The court added that there was no criminal liability because the track lacked the latest speed-control systems. “The direct and immediate cause, which decidedly set in motion the unfortunate accident, was excessive speed,” said the court on 7th October, when the probe ended. But it did acknowledge that “safety on the line could have been better.” Garzon, detained after the crash and provisionally charged, was later released pending a possible court case. The investigating judge will later rule on whether to put Garzon on trial.
BA increases flights to Tenerife next summer CABILDO President Carlos Alonso, who attended the World Travel Market in London this week, believes there are good prospects for the British market next summer.
This was emphasised by the news that British Airways will increase its frequencies to the Island with five or six weekly connections. In addition, it has confirmed its commitment to Tenerife, announcing it will be selling packages with hotel establishments in the North of the Island. Alonso said: “Tour operators and airlines rely increasingly on secure destinations like ours, and the data confirmed that we have done well in promoting the UK market, where, so far this year, it has grown by around 3.5%. “Our work is now focused especially on increasing the spending of the British tourists on arrival. We are also seeing the evolution experienced by the tourism market toward a more affluent tour-
ist, who prefers regular flights and upscale hotels.” The Cabildo chief added: “In the last 15 years we have seen that the number of British tourists staying in fivestar hotels has risen from 24,000 to 190,000.” In addition, the Barrhead Travel tour operator, specialising in the Scottish market, has the company will again charter flights to Tenerife from May to October next year. The Island’s Tourism Minister, Alberto Bernabe, said: “We have good prospects. The new Iberia Express flights to London, and the new Norwegian connections for this winter to Birmingham and Edinburgh, will involve 53,000 additional seats.” Also, the Association of British Travel Writers confirmed it will hold its 2016 annual congress in Tenerife, from 20th-23rd January. This event will bring together more than 100 journalists from the most prestigious media worldwide. “This meeting was last on the Island six years ago, with a media coverage worth more than £1m,” said Barnabe.

THE new Pension Freedom reform announcement by HMRC, back in April, meant that upon reaching 55, you could access up to 25% of the fund, tax-free if you had a private or company pension.
So it´s not surprising that in the first three months, some 200,000 people chose to take advantage of this new “freedom”. The majority elected to access their policies through a Drawdown, or an Uncrystallised Lump Sum (see Jargon Buster in my last column for a definition of these terms). But recent research, based on data collected from 23 Life Insurance and Pension Providers, found that 16% of over55s would be hit with an exit charge of some kind were they to attempt a transfer. Of those wanting to take advantage of the

Pension Freedom? The truth or myth? new Freedoms to access their funds, many were forced to switch to a new contract - with their existing provider - without incurring a “penalty fee”. Since the introduction of the Pension Freedoms, the UK Government has been fairly vocal in its criticism of these providers charging high exit fees. And in July, it unveiled plans to review such charges. The Treasury’s consultation paper which followed proposed a cap on all exit fees, including a flexible cap on charges in certain circumstances, as well as a voluntary agreement between advisers over restricting early-exit fees. Yet despite all the deliberations surrounding such an “agreement”, data collected by the FCA from a sample of 4.1 million customers found that some 16% of all over-55s still faced an exit fee of some kind when cashing in their pension - as outlined here: *4% had an exit fee of between 2%-5% *2% had an exit fee of between 5%-10%
*1.1% had an exit fee of between 10%-20% *0.5% had an exit fee of over 20% (Source: FCA Pension Freedoms Data Collection Exercise: Analysis & Findings September 2015) Findings by the Financial Conduct Authority have also found that most retirees, specifically those interested in Drawdown, would need to transfer their entire pension fund to access the full range of Pension Freedoms. So for some clients, the charges mentioned would appear to be unavoidable. Or ARE they? For a no-fee, no-obligation review, please contact us. THE number of Canary Islands pensioners swelled by 2.7% to a total of 293,819 in October, against the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. By provinces, in Las Palmas there were 154,430 pensions (+2.9%) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 139,389 (+2.5%). In addition, 34,895 people registered pensions for permanent disability, at an average of 841.36 euros; Widowhood, 77,525 at an average pension of 614.19 euros; Orphans, 16,534 (347.39 euros) and Families, 1,923 (517.61 euros). The average monthly pension is now 1,026 euros, which is a 2.19% increase over October 2014.

feel squeeze REVENUE from Banco Santander’s lending declined in two of its biggest markets during the third quarter.
The slump came as Brazil fell into recession with a 9.6% fall, and low interest rates squeezed margins at home in Spain, where a 2.2% drop was reported. Net interest income the difference between what banks charge for loans and pay for deposits - fell 3.5% from the previous quarter. Spain is Santander’s third-biggest unit after the UK and Brazil, and Chief Executive Officer Jose Antonio Alvarez said: “In Spain, we are suffering in volumes. We are suffering - we are not growing. A sell-off in Latin American currencies also eroded earnings in
the three months ending in September. Santander said net income climbed 4.3% to 1.68bn euros, in line with the average estimate in a Bloomberg survey. Consumers loans dropped 0.8% in Spain and were down 2% from a year earlier in that country, where credit remains subdued, despite the expanding economy. CaixaBank SA, Spain’s third-largest bank, said net interest income fell 8.3% in the quarter. As Ana Botin enters her second year as chairman, she is under pressure to increase pay-outs and build up capital buffers, without resorting to another share sale. The stock has dropped 26% since the bank tapped investors and slashed its dividend at the start of the year.
It’s the second-worst performer among companies tracked by the STOXX 600 Banks Index this year. Alfredo Alonso, a Kepler Cheuvreux analyst in Madrid, told clients: “Santander has posted a slightly weaker-thanexpected set of results. “The third quarter has shown the lack of earnings momentum, and a higher-than-expected pressure from FX.” Santander fell as much as 3.7% in Madrid trading. The shares were down 2.8% at 5.06 euros. Net income from the British unit rose 18% in the third quarter from a year earlier while earnings climbed 23% in Spain to 311m euros. Brazil’s Real lost 21% of its value against the euro over the quarter as the country fell into a recession. Currencies also slumped in the key markets of Mexico and Chile.

Rob Hodgson and Kay Ralph plan to build an architectural monument high on a cliff top. They want to build a sleek glass-fronted house inspired by the cliff top villas of California. Their plot overlooks a beautiful national trust beach in North Wales, but to have their jaw-dropping panoramic views will mean taking the biggest gamble of their lives. Access will be incredibly difficult and expensive because of a low bridge over the narrow track to the site. Erosion specialists predict their stunning new home could one day fall into the sea.
Prison Night Channel 4, 21:00
The drama of life behind bars has inspired some of the world’s greatest movies, from awardwinning thrillers to entertaining comedies. Why is there such a dark fascination for prisons? Is it an innate fear of confinement?

The Hunt: In The Grip Of The Seasons
6th November - 12th November 2015
S unday
BBC1, 21.00
Episode two looks at the challenges of hunting in the Arctic, the most seasonal place on Earth. The Arctic is a place that alters its state on an annual loop, from a floating continent of ice in permanent darkness to a meagre scattering of barren islands under 24-hour sunshine. This means that the year is lean, with only brief windows of opportunity for the predators that call this place home: the Arctic wolf, on the larger islands; the Arctic fox on the dramatic coasts; and out on the sea ice, the polar bear. These predators answer the problems of the changing world in which they live by switching through a string of completely different hunting strategies at different times of year. In a filming first, The Hunt shows a polar bear risking life and limb to climb 300m up a cliff to get to chicks and eggs; and another using holes in the melting summer ice to steal closer to basking seals. Arctic foxes have adopted a new strategy for capturing Arctic auks, plucking them out of the sky mid-flight as they attempt to get away.

Great Canal Journeys Channel 4, 20:00
Timothy West and Prunella Scales head to Ireland. In perhaps their most dramatically beautiful voyage, they trace the story of the canal that links the south to the north: the Shannon Erne Waterway, also known as the Peace Canal. Their voyage begins on the shores of Lough Allen in County Leitrim. They try some folk singing and Irish dancing; travel across border country; visit the ruins of Crom Castle and Bloody Pass, and also meet a genealogist with an interesting story to tell.

Antiques Roadshow BBC1, 20:00 The Antiques Roadshow makes a return visit to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. There are plenty of mysteries in the show as jewellery specialist Susan Rumfit hears about a diamond brooch found hidden inside a barometer, and Jon Baddeley reveals the true purpose of a curious piece of carved wood dated 1775. Fiona is intrigued by a length of tree that ended up inside a Lancaster bomber on a raid in Norway in the Second World War, while militaria specialist Graham Lay is moved by the story behind a pair of boots, a child’s drawing and a parachute handle. The team admire a Liberty necklace that a young girl plans to wear for her school leaving ball, and a dilapidated French harp that dates from before the French Revolution poses a considerable restoration challenge for its owner. Mark Hill is intrigued to find a pair of wartime propaganda posters printed on hessian sacking, saved from a skip and kept under the owner’s bed.

The Wanted BBC1, 21.15
New 10-part series following elite units of uniformed and plain clothed police officers in two of Britain’s busiest forces. Undercover surveillance operations, dawn raids and high-speed pursuits are all in a day’s work for these officers as they execute arrest warrants in Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. But for this series, they’re wearing special filming equipment which brings viewers closer to the action than ever before. Each pulsating episode features the work of a number of specialist teams, including the Serious Organised Crime Group, which aims to take the most dangerous villains off the streets of Manchester. It also focuses on officers in Leeds who track down home-grown offenders, as well as foreign criminals on the run from police in their own countries. In this first episode the Serious Organised Crime Group are tasked with tracking down two absconded prisoners and putting them back behind bars, while the Quartz Drugs Team discover a cannabis farm in Leeds with some lethal electrical engineering.

Dominic Sandbrook: Let Us Entertain You
6th November - 12th November 2015
W ednesday
BBC2, 21.00
Episode two of Let Us Entertain You explores how the industrial revolution presaged a fundamental upheaval of British society and an overturning of the traditional social hierarchies. For the first time a burgeoning middle-class emerged, as innovation, technical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills - as opposed to an accident of birth - were rewarded with vast riches. Men like Richard Arkwright, Josiah Wedgewood and Isambard Kingdom Brunel achieved fame, recognition and vast fortunes. But rather than challenge and reshape society they were absorbed into it, becoming the new aristocracy and reinforcing the old elites. And so it was with post-war British culture. Creativity - like entrepreneurial spirit - is no respecter of class or breeding. But whilst our culture has witnessed the emergence of a range of working class voices who have railed against the inequalities of society, so too have their subsequent successes seen them absorbed into the machine: from Johnny Rotten advertising Country Life butter to Madness playing on the roof of Buckingham Palace, artists may proclaim their work as a great force for change, but they often end up as Lord of the Manor. Pop culture has reinforced rather than overthrown the old order, revelling in an enduring fascination with class, history and breeding - from Downton Abbey to James Bond.

Lord Sugar asks the teams to set up and run a handyman business. Armed with a van full of tools and a little elbow grease, the candidates are challenged to generate as much cash as possible in two days. The teams set to work offering cleaning, gardening and DIY services to large and small clients alike. Touting for business across London, one team get their hands dirty at a local football club, while the other attempts a refurbishment at the local theatre. However, the football club job is at risk when an overzealous candidate takes professionalism to the limits, and there’s drama at the theatre when simple measurements are done wrong. As the teams race to maximise their profits, there are DIY disasters, undercooked quotes and plenty of mistakes and dissatisfied customers along the way. In the boardroom, Lord Sugar throws a spanner in the works with two unprecedented moves.

Scorpion ITV2, 21.00
The new Director of Homeland Security reunites the team when a nuclear powered Russian satellite is knocked out of orbit and must be diverted before it detonates over Southern California. Also, Paige and Walter must face their feelings for each other after hospital footage reveals Paige kissed him. Alana De La Garza guest stars as the new head of Homeland Security and KISS frontman Gene Simmons makes a cameo appearance as himself. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, hightech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee), who has a young gifted son, to translate the world for them. These nerdy masterminds have at last found the perfect job; a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solves the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace turn up the heat for the quarter-final stage of the cookery competition. First up is the invention test in which the competitors must create a dish from a selection of ten ingredients, including poussin, squid, mango and chocolate. After this, two of the six chefs are dismissed, with the survivors going straight on to cook a two-course menu for three seasoned restaurant critics. Only three chefs will progress to the knockout round.

The final visit of the week is to the pet-friendly Fritton Arms in Fritton, Norfolk, where manager Ben Davenport and his partner Sian Dewaal aspire to run the perfect B&B. David and Stevie arrive feeling upset following their feedback and so conduct a forensic style room inspection complete with rubber gloves. That afternoon, Ben and Sian organise a paddleboat race on the nearby lake where everyone’s competitive natures are exposed. Over dinner Ben impresses his guests by revealing that the property has aristocratic connections but it is the fact they allow dogs to stay that comes under fire. At breakfast, David and Stevie get carried away with the free Bloody Marys on offer, and Kathryn’s sausage is served up burnt. At feedback Ben and Sian are disappointed by the low scores for cleanliness and bewildered to find that some guests would not be willing to return.

Walk don’t run - and get rid of that weight
BRISK walking is better for keeping weight off - and trimming down that waist - than going to the gym, according to research by the London School of Economics.
Women of all ages, and men over 50 who walked regularly for more than 30 minutes, were found to weigh less than those who took part in vigorous activities, such as jogging or cycling. Dr Grace Lordan, a specialist in health economics who led the research, compared the measurements of people who took part in activities which increased heart rate and caused perspiring. She compared people who said they often did half-an-hour of fast-paced walking, with those who did the same amount of heavy housework, manual labour
and robust sports such as rugby. And her team discovered that people who walked a lot had a lower BMI (Body Mass Index) and a smaller waist than those who took part in regular exercise or sport. The findings were
based on physical activity levels from the annual Health Survey for England between 1999 and 2012. Government guidelines suggest adults should do 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity
every week, but there is no telling which activity is most effective. Currently, 32 million adults in the UK are overweight - about 60% of the adult population of whom 12.5 million are obese. Estimates by the
World Obesity Forum predict that this will rise to 75% of the adult population by 2025. The latest research suggests nearly eight in 10 adults are failing to meet the Government-specified exercise targets, with obesity costing the NHS
almost £1bn a year. The article, scheduled for publication in the Risk Analysis journal, believes that a campaign to promote the health benefits of walking would be a more effective way to tackle obesity, rather than Public Health messages on healthy diets. “Given the obesity epidemic, and the fact that a large proportion of people in the UK are inactive, recommending that people walk briskly more often is a cheap and easy policy option,” it says. “Additionally, there is no monetary cost to walking, so it is most likely that the benefits will outweigh the costs. “It has also been shown by the same authors that walking is associated with better physical and mental health. “So, a simple policy of ‘every step counts’ may be a step towards curbing the upward trend in obesity rates - and beneficial for other health conditions.”
CLEANSE, MOISTURISE, PROTECT!
By Carl Pattison
HAIR sits on our heads and is supposed to be our crowning glory. And if it’s cut well and coloured to perfection, there’s no finer accessory.
Yet what does it take to care for this substance, which grows from your scalp at a seemingly never-ending rate? I normally ask the same question to most of my clients when they arrive in the salon with dry or damaged hair. Abuse generally causes the problems, from over-colouring to under-conditioning, heatdamage to neglect. It doesn’t take much
to end up with dry, brittle or breaking hair. If your haircare routine isn’t good, it will show. We don’t produce chemicals to protect our hair from what we put it through these days, so we have to add in what nature doesn’t supply.
We try to advise clients in the salon about every form of haircare, from the way you brush it to the treatment you should be using. But I cannot force or push any form of haircare on to someone who
doesn’t want it. Advice is free, but it’s up to clients to take it on board, or live with what, maybe, you’re not happy with. In-salon treatments are available, as well as take-home rescuepacks, but it’s up to you to carry on the salon experience at home. The biggest errors seem to be over-colouring the same hair sec-
tions repetitively, and hair-iron abuse. Overcolouring is down to the stylist, but the hairirons should never be used without protective spray! Even failing to brush your hair correctly, or tying it up fiercely, can cause untold damage. If you are worried about your hair and its condition, bring up the subject with your styl-
ists, there is always a solution. In the salon, we use a three-step system – cleanse, moisturise protect - which ensures that, as you remove the hair’s natural strength and condition, it is being replaced constantly. Make sure your hair is getting the attention it deserves, and give it back something you are, perhaps, taking away.

Entertainment
6th November - 12th November 2015
By Jamie Droo LONG before the days of Facebook and social networks, people used to communicate through a somewhat oldfashioned method.
Who remembers speech? Who remembers actually talking to one another instead of communicating via a keyboard? Word of mouth just doesn’t happen any more; or rather, it does but it has evolved. Years ago on this Island, the entertainment circuit got to know about new artistes from people talking to one another at the various venues in which established artistes would perform. Or most acts would congregate in the Stage Door, which used to be well known as a venue where a fair few
39 CW
THIS IS A THRILLER!
of the Islands acts and comperes would socialise. They could showcase their act in there, and a lot of work was generated for new artistes in that one small, but very popular venue. Sadly, that method has been left way behind, and the Facebook audition is more prominent than ever. It’s not a bad thing, really, because cream will always rise to the top. It is just that Facebook allows anyone to become an act in the virtual world but, when it comes to performing on stage in front of a live audience, the cracks start to show. So it takes a while to trawl through the ones who can cut it and those who are simply deluded. Having said all that, word of mouth is still prominent, but delivered in typed
words rather than speech. I have a prime example of this. Earlier this week, I came across a Facebook post from Andy P, compere at Dreamers bar in Los Cristianos, who has been a compere on the Island for years. He has worked in some of the top showbars here as resident and has probably worked alongside every mainstream act in Tenerife over the years, He posted something like this: “To all comperes, new act out here, his name is Medhanie Mezgebe. Within two mins this guy rocked Dreamers bar. I have seen a lot of Michael Jackson acts but WOW! Trust me on this, everyone needs to take a look at this guy. Quickest I have ever offered anyone a gig.” This kind of reference
from someone who really knows his onions makes everyone sit up and listen. Personally, I was instantly interested for two reasons. Firstly, it provided me with inspiration for the words on this page and, secondly, I also book acts in the venue where I am resident. I got in touch with Mezgebe, who is known as Meedow (pronounced Meadow), and he quickly arranged to come to my venue the next evening. He was extremely polite and courteous, and held himself in a true, professional way. I knew straight away that this guy was the real deal. Our initial conversation was about his name and where he was from. Meedow travelled to Tenerife from Sweden, where his parents met and studied together
before marrying. His father is from Ethiopia and his mother from Brooklyn, New York. The name Meedow comes from his father’s homeland, yet he speaks fluent Swedish and English. And his accent is pure Brooklyn, which somehow adds to his appeal. All this information was gained before we even discussed anything to do with his act. Many new acts make the mistake of coming in to a venue and telling you all about what they do and talking you through their show at the bar. Meedow said, quite simply: “May I show you what I do, Sir?” Sir? Wow, there is never any need to call me Sir - I work for a living. But the man has manners beyond expectation. I had already told the
audience he was coming to say hello and that the buzz about him on social networks was creating a lot of excitement on the scene. Michael Jackson is probably one of the hardest artistes to tribute, simply because he had a vocal register that saw no boundaries. His hits were engineered very differently from the normal way of song-writing, and his dance moves were second to none. To tribute Michael Jackson effectively, you have to be able to sing with a vocal range to match the legend - and also be able to dance with those signature Jackson moves. Not only are those two dynamics hard to match, but you then have to combine the two - and sing and dance simultaneously! The energy Meedow displays during his performance is what makes him a thoroughbred entertainer. He is a natural on stage, and his vocal range is outstanding. He played his first gig at Dreamers on Wednesday night and turned the place inside out. A few of my friends, on holiday here at the moment, made a point of seeing him. The Wolton family, from Swindon, posted: “The new MJ act at Dreamers bar was awesome, highly recommended.” Terry and Donna Shields, from Newcastle, also sent me a private message saying: “MJ blew us away, can’t wait to come back and see him again in May.” This guy will have no problem filling his diary … if it’s not full already! You can contact him for work via Facebook. Just search for Medhanie Mezgebe. It has been a long time since I’ve seen a new act of this calibre arrive on the Island, and if you want him on your billboards, you’ll have to act fast!

FOR me, there is nothing quite like going to a restaurant for the first time. Something unique, something different, somewhere you can tell your friends about. And normally, you go in with an open mind. That was never going to be the case at Love India. Situated in the vibrant Vulcano Gourmetland Centre behind the Safari Centre in Las Americas, Love India is a classic restaurant from the Gourmetland group. They have been one of the dining success stories of the decade and are the team behind Embrujo, La Martina and Taurus. So, instantly, you know how high the bar has been set. Love India is something a little different in the group’s stable and, while in many ways the food and atmosphere is inspired by the popular Oriental Garden, Love India has already devel-

oped its own niche. There are all the traditional dishes you would expect in a variety of styles and flavours. You have nearly 30 starters to choose from - and that’s before you have the mind-boggling number of main courses to sample and enjoy. I always find Indian restaurants to be quite tribal. Once you have found one to suit your taste, you normally dine there time and again. While I understand that philosophy, you are narrowing the mind because Indian dishes are so varied and open to creativity. And this is what you have at Love India.
When we dined this week, we were encouraged to sample the Tandoori dishes as this is where the restaurant comes into its own. The Gourmentlandcreated Chicken Tikka and Cheese is an Island favourite now. While it is served in other establishments, its originality and soul lies here. The head chef was brought across from Oriental Garden, and the quality shines through. The prawn puri is unique, as full king prawns are used - and combined with the tasty, secret, special sauce. We enjoyed this with the onion baaji, which is a dish often miscooked. The onions need to be chopped just so, and the key is in the spice and texture. Too much and the spice overpowers the onion. Too dry and the dish needs sauce, which defeats the object. Suffice to say, Love India have it spot-on, as are their chicken samosas, which are moist, with a delicious, light, curry twang. Electing to go down the Tandoori route, it made sense to try a range of the options rather than
just one or two main dishes. Tandoori cooking is an art. It takes experience and know-how to get it just right. I’ve lost count of how many places either over-paste with the sauce, which overpowers, or keep the meat in the oven too long. Again, this leads to dryness and the need for extra sauce. That was never going to be a problem here! On our sampler, we had lamb, duck, chicken breast and on the bone, along with a special kingprawn tandoori. This is a rare dish in an Indian restaurant, and it has to be tried. The Tandoori oven gives the prawn a different texture and is a proper treat. To accompany the meat, we had the pilau rice and the house special vegetable rice, which was amazing. There was also a variety of sauces, ranging from tangy and sweet to the slightlyspicier and longer-lasting. They all worked in their own way and it was great to mix the meats with the sauces and the different rices, all mopped up with the must-have cheese nan. The Love India menu lends itself to sharing and exploring which, for me, is what an Indian restaurant is all about. The bathrooms are spotless and modern, and there is nothing to fault. 10 foods not for you By Nico Gil
of Activate Sports Club
WHEN it comes to food, everything in moderation is usually true. A drop of alcohol or an ice-cream now and then won’t have any major impact on your overall health.
But, despite appearing to be relatively harmless and even, in some cases, a healthier alternative, there are many food and drink products you should always avoid. And I mean always! There are more where these came from, I’m afraid, but here are 10 to get you started. 1. Margarine Stick with butter or, better still, olive or coconut oil. Margarine is evil, packed with horrible trans fats, which cause heart disease and diabetes, among other things. And it is much, much worse than the natural, saturated fat found in butter, so discard any food using margarine as an ingredient. 2. Processed meat Put down the bacon, sausages, salami and chorizo and take 10
steps backwards. Processed meats are full of salt and nitrates, and have been linked to stomach cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes. 3. Fruit juice (especially when made from concentrate) Many people are shocked when they discover that fruit juice isn’t that good for you. Almost every juice you buy in a carton is flavoured sugar water, stripped of almost all nutrition. Fresh juice, with no sugar added, is a better option. But even then, you
shouldn’t consume it too often – there’s a huge difference in how quickly you drink a 250ml glass of juice, and how long it would take to eat the same amount of fruit. You also eliminate essential fibre when you juice fruit and vegetables. 4. Fizzy drinks (normal and diet) There is absolutely nothing good about fizzy drinks of any kind. The regular varieties are full of teeth-rotting sugar, and the diet kind are packed with cancercausing, artificial sweeteners. The
average can of normal coke, for example, contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar (OMG!). To cope with the sugar hit, your body creates excess insulin, which, typically, helps the body absorb sugar from the bloodstream and use it for energy. But over time, this response increases your risk of developing diabetes and some types of cancer. Also, there are the artificial colourings to think about. 5. Sugary breakfast cereals Millions of people
start each day by eating a nutritional time-bomb! Most packaged cereals (and, criminally, especially the ones marketed towards children) contain an unbelievable amount of sugar and salt. And, as no one usually consumes the recommended serving amount (which is barely a tea-cup), you can find yourself taking in an entire day’s worth of sugar at breakfast. 6. Doughnuts Sugar, fat, fried food and refined carbs are all known to be bad for you - and (admittedly very tasty) doughnuts contain all of them in one. A really bad way to consume around 400 calories, with next to no nutritional benefit whatsoever. 7. Non-organic meat (especially chicken) The meat industry has spiralled out of control in recent years, and now, more than ever, it’s vital that you know exactly where your meat is coming from, and what conditions the animals were raised in. If the animals were, like so many, force-fed a mixture of hormones, food packed with pesticides and a selection of antibiotics, that’s exactly what you are eating, too. Try to source a local farmer,or buy your meat from a reputable butcher. 8. Table salt
Most people know that salt causes high blood pressure, yet it’s still grossly overused in cooking. Originally produced from sea salt, refined table salt strips sea salt of most of its minerals, and is then pumped with several additives to dry it out. Go for the original product, and, wherever possible, Himalayan salt. 9. Milk Like many of the items listed, conventional milk these days comes from the mass farming industry, especially the mix of drugs given to the animals, and the genetically-modified food they are given. These drugs and toxins are passed to us when we drink milk or eat non-organic dairy products, and are linked to many health problems, including asthma, allergies, arthritis, heart disease and cancer. 10. Eggs from caged chickens Organic, free-range eggs are the only kind you should be eating. You wouldn’t believe some of the things that go on in chicken farming - there are documentaries you can watch if you’re curious! But eggs from caged chickens can contain everything, from antibiotics and salmonella to growth hormones and traces of arsenic.

HOT WINTER WHITES By Carl Pattison
WHEN it comes to considering winter colours, you automatically think of your browns, blacks and greys. Yet adding white to your wardrobe at this time of year can give your whole clothing collection another dimension.
There’s no such thing as “white”, especially in clothing, because it can
be hard to match up two white items because the shade varies. From “off”
to “cream”, and “brilliant” to “ivory”, there’s always a shade to match
your skin and hair tone. Try hunting down a white suit jacket to
wear over slightly-flared trousers to create a Seventies’ vibe that’s hot at the moment. White knitwear, which is rocking many of this season’s winter collection, doesn’t have to be heavy and overbearing. Even pastels mixed in with white will transform a simple outfit into an original piece. Just make sure that the white you go for isn’t too bright, especially with a nylon-type fabric because this can cheapen the look. Even white eveningwear in the darker months can look amaz-
ing if it has some added sparkle in silvers or golds. Winter white should be stylish and crisp, if done correctly, making a change from some of the darker colours that can drag down your look. Even if you’re not doing the whole topto-toe white, mix it in with beiges and greys and you’ll see that these tones look superb together. Winter White isn’t a difficult colour to pull off, and most of us have some item in our wardrobes which we can now use throughout the year.

We’re tickled Pink! THE annual Pink Day took place last Sunday at Our Place in Costa del Silencio, raising money and awareness for two of the main Canaries’ cancer charities, AMATE and AECC.
And what an afternoon! Oasis Fm DJ Gordon Slayney compered the event for the second year running - “Truly a privilege” - and also organised the artistes appearing. Only one act was unable to make it, but the slot was quickly filled by Emma Blacka. She was there, initially, to support the event but with just 10 minutes’ notice, she was on stage. What a star! All the acts deserve a mention for giving their time free of charge, and for putting on a fabulous show, so many thanks to Chrissie Dean, Luke Towler, Jacqui Peters, Scott
Bateman, Didi, Debbie Diamond, Emma Blacka, Stephen Tyler, Danny Ellis (as Vivi Visage), Abba Angels, Adrian Brooks (as David Bowie) and Michaela Bridges. Rounding off the entertainment were Shanti. The Jersey Boys (Pip Brown and Luke Carey) also performed, and the day’s cute moment came when the
boys were about to sing Frankie Valli’s My Eyes Adored You. Pip told the audience he sang it to his baby daughter, River, every night. And once they started the track, up toddles River and clings to her Dad’s legs. Priceless! Away from the entertainment there was plenty happening, with Mark’s renowned
Barbecue, free Winetasting, Cake stalls and Guess the teddy’s name, plus the Raffle and Tombola. Pink Day T-shirts were also on sale, The Auction proved a big attraction, with some some fantastic lots. They were all donated by local businesses, who always step up to the plate for this event
The entire outside area and parking spaces were jam-packed with people enjoying a sunsoaked day. It was, literally, a sea of pink! And the best part about the entire event was the astonishing total raised so far - and still counting - which stands at 4,100 eu-
ros. It was more than double last year’s sum. A fantastic achievement! Special thanks to all the Our Place staff, and to the organising committee for their hard work throughout the year in planning and putting on such a remarkable day.
ShowStoppers’ big night to remember WHAT a night we had! More than 500 people came to the Auditorium Infanta Leonor, Los Cristianos, and thoroughly enjoyed Showstoppers 2015, performed by the talented performers of UK-based Gillian Banks Theatre School.
Zumba masterclass is a must!
ZUMBA´S popular Hermann Melo master-class tour, never before seen in the Canaries, stops off in Santa Cruz, (by the Cascada, near the Auditorium) on Sunday, 15th November.
It starts at 6pm and is definitely not to be missed by Zumba fanatics because a fabulous evening is guaranteed. Tickets are 18 euros or 25 euros (VIP), and transport is available on request. Call 608 362 404 and share this spectacular event!
Some EU funding was secured to bring the students over for their fourth Tenerife trip, to raise funds for local charities Live Arico, Helping Hands and the children of Granadilla’s Guaidyl day centre. As ever, the show is genuinely worthy of any world stage, and again, the youngsters did not disappoint. Over 30 performers sang, danced and even gave an aerial display on the silks ... it really was something special! They were joined by Tenerife performers Nik Page, the school´s patron, his daughter Coco, plus Alfie Havenhand Bailey, who leaves Tenerife to join the Yorkshire-based school next year. Sue Havenhand, representing Live Arico, said: ¨This year´s event really was a team effort with Liz Montague, Sandra Coats and me involving ourselves in the preparations which included booking the venue, printing the tickets and, of course, all that sell-
ing. “Our charities were extremely fortunate to benefit from the 4,000plus euros raised, and we are so grateful.” She added: “We would like to thank Gillian Banks for putting on such an impressive show, Martyn Howells for sound and lighting, and not forgetting all those talented youngsters. “Thanks also to our network of ticketsellers and Oasis Fm/ Canarian Weekly for the publicity; to Viana Shows for endless support, and Casa Zaguan, in Vilaflor, for the fantastic two-night break donated to the raffle, as well as those who made their own prize donations. “Mark Thornton the official event photographer, also deserves a pat on the back, as do our programme sponsors CBAS, Blevins Franks, Bombay Babu, and Da Cotta Law. “That said, Tenerife awaits, with anticipation, Showstoppers 2016.”

Cats Welfare news
Baby Casper’s huge courage HALLOWEEN was a really scary day and night for this lovely, fourmonth-old kitten we have called Casper. He was found in the road on Saturday, run over by a car and left for dead. He was rushed to one of our vets, X-rayed and given painkillers to ease his agony. The car had, in fact, broken his leg in many places and we have paid for an extensive operation for his leg to be pinned. Despite his injuries, though, he’s a happy little boy with lots of love to give, and he has almost certainly been in a home at some stage. When Casper is well enough, he will be castrated and be given his injections and a microchip. Would you like to
adopt him? Contact us to ask questions or to meet him - you won’t be disappointed. We receive no Government funding at Cats Welfare and rely, totally, on the generosity of donations and what we can raise from our charity shop. Where does the money go, though? Every penny is used for the welfare of cats and kittens in the South of the Island,
such as Casper. We also catch, and our vets neuter, many stray cats each month. In addition, we feed 15 large colonies of strays, and pay for all the cats and kittens in our foster care. Every penny we raise is spent wisely but, sadly, we need to do still more. We need more traps because there is a waiting list of people wanting to borrow the few traps we own. There are
many stray colonies we know of which need to be neutered, and there are also several sick and injured cats and kittens we could help, but for lack of funds. Yet there are lots of ways in which you can help us say Yes when an emergency call comes in. We always need foster carers to look after cats and kittens on a short-term basis while we find them a home. We provide all food, litter and veterinary care and find them a home ... you provide the cuddles! We also accept good condition, as-new items gladly, because they can be sold in our charity shop in San Blas, on Golf del Sur. You can either drop them off, or we can collect.
Miss Gay Tenerife NINETEEN hopefuls will parade in swimsuit and evening gown tomorrow (Saturday) night at Arafo’s Auditorium Juan Carlos I, aim-
ing to be crowned Miss Gay Tenerife. And the organisation behind it expect this to be its best event ever. During the show - now
The travelling saint A STATUE of Saint Michael the Archangel will be taken to all churches in San Miguel de Abona this month. The occasion marks the 350th anniversary of the first hermitage found in the borough and dedicated to him. It arrives at San Blas Catholic Church, on
Golf del Sur, tomorrow (Saturday), when an ecumenical service for all religious denominations - featuring Bible readings and hymns - will take place at 6pm. Sunday’s Holy Mass, at the usual time of 10am, will celebrate this historical visit.
in its fourth year - candidates must answer a series of questions from the contest’s jury. They will appoint four queens, but the main winner will also have three runner-up bridesmaids.
The show will feature performances from Loly Star, Gaby Ferrer, Fernando Santana and Shay, plus students from the Municipal School of Gymnastics in Arafo. Everyone is welcome.

Goose-bump city of magic!
WHETHER you like football or not, Barcelona, cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, will give you goose bumps.
From the moment you step outside the airport, you can feel the magic in the air, defined by quirky art and architecture, imaginative food and vibrant street life. It has medieval roots, seen in the maze-like Gothic Quarter, but a modernist personality represented by architect Antoni Gaudi’s fantastic Sagrada Família church, which is a mustsee. Its restaurant scene, anchored by the central Boqueria market, ranges from fine dining to tiny tapas bars. We chose a hotel in the heart of the city, in La
Rambla, and set out to see as much as possible. La Rambla, a 1.2kmlong boulevard in the city centre, is the one place all visitors are bound to pass through. The middle section is pedestrian-only and, where most streets are rather narrow, this one is wide. The boulevard has became a popular hangout - a place to see and be seen - and is full of street performers, souvenir stores and artists with their paintings
on sale. If you want to visit Barcelona at a leisurely pace, the doubledecker tourist bus is your best option. You can get on and off all day long, with the same ticket. You can change routes (there are two) and learn about the history of the city through a comfortable audio system with earphones. With so much history and culture to explore, not to mention the wonders of the architectural variety, you might want
to take one route a day to take it all in. Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi began working on the giant Basilica, Sagrada Familia, in 1882 (honestly!) and by the centenary of his death, in 2026, it might be complete ... a definite case of mañana, I’d say. But when you gaze at the towers in their intricate detail, you can see why this is not just a work of art, but a work of love. When complete, it will soar to 564ft. Park Güell is another
Gaudi attraction - they are everywhere, even down to the lamp-posts - and this one will definitely attract the kids. The dragon (at the entrance to the park) is adorned with beautifully-coloured tiling, and there is something rather hypnotic and magical about it. But “hypnotic” and “magical” are words you will hear me use constantly when Barcelona comes to mind. And one place this becomes very apparent is at Camp
Nou, home to Barcelona FC. Take a tour of the grounds or, if lucky enough that your dates coincide, see a match. But whatever you decide to do in this wondrous, seaside city, from the Magic Fountain (there´s that word again) to a walk around the Gothic quarter; while away the hours people-watching in Las Ramblas or the thrill of the match, there is one thing for certain: you will come away loving the lifestyle with a real urge to return. Tenerife Sunshine is offering a fantastic five nights in a 4-star hotel in Las Ramblas for just 339 euros pp, based on two sharing. Price includes Canarian resident flights, accommodation and transfers. For more information, call 922 751 867 or call into any of our offices. Alternatively, email us on info@tenerifesunshine.com.

Harley’s the Joel in The Crown GAFFERS A still lead the way in Division One of the Direct Telecom Pool League after another win. But they were let off the hook by Terrace Bantams, who have had a decent start to the season.
Both teams started well and across the opening sessions there was nothing to separate the two, who were tied at 4-4 after eight frames. Gaffers started the final session strongly and took the first two frames to secure at least a draw. But Bantams hit back with Mal beating Lee, leaving Neil needing a win in the last frame for the match, and Adi seeking victory for the draw. The game reflected the night as both players got down to the black, Adi having the first clear-cut chance. But he left himself a difficult reverse double and hit it too thin, the white disappearing down the bottom pocket, Neil was never going to miss the black with two shots, and the points went to Gaffers. There was a tussle below for second spot, with Dreamers A
looking to retain their position against thirdplace Treehouse A. The table suggested there was nothing between them. But on the night, the difference was there for all to see. Dreamers had a shocker, going 3-0 then 6-1 down. This became 7-1 and it was game over. Mark, Paul and Scott all got hat-tricks for Treehouse, who raised some eyebrows with the 10-2 win. Dreamers will put it down to an off-night, but a gap in the table is now there. At the opposite end, Terrace Roosters hosted an under-strength Palms A, with both teams bidding to get their season back on track. Roosters took early frames and, with their tails up, were always in control. It was their second win of the season only, and they are still adrift at the bottom. Palms B kept pace with the top teams after another win, this time at home to The Phoenix. The previous week, the visitors did the A team and they were confident of doing the double. It was tight all night and Paul, last week’s hero, lost both frames for Palms at crucial moments. However Wayne was on the bunny all night and his three wins steered the hosts

home, much to the delight of new owners Al Murray and Al Murray 2. Phoenix Potters had their eyes on a move up the table as they took on Exiles A, just a place above them. The Los Abrigos octogenarians must have had their Sanatogen, though, because they quickly raced into a 6-0 lead. Exiles are not the same on the road, and Potters added the seventh frame required to clinch the match. Tenerife Hammers C

have had a good couple of weeks, especially with last week’s draw at Gaffers A. And this week saw them in Los Cristianos for a clash against Bluebell A. However, the home team flew out of the traps. Mucker was the star turn, taking all his frames, and the hosts were good value for the win that could kick-start their campaign. Tenerife Hammers A were having a better night of it as they hosted Rewind A, who are just starting to gel as a team. They put on a strong away show, but their opponents were just too strong them, eventually closing the game out 8-4. It has been sticky start for the former champions, who will be keen to enjoy a little run now. In Division Two Crown B, hoping to move closer to leaders Treehouse B, were away at Tenerife Pool Tables. Well, I say away, but they travelled about five metres!

They were favourites on paper but TPT, in a resilient mood, started picking off frames to move into a nice lead. They got themselves to six, which guaranteed a draw, but Crown B fought back. Going into the last frame it was 6-5 to TPT, with 10-year-old Harley, who had lost his two earlier frames, facing Crown B’s Joel. But Harley is cool under pressure and the attention turned to Joel, who was struggling. And when Harley slotted away a cool black for the win, the watching crowd went wild. Not sure Joel will be allowed to forget that frame for a while, though. Picasso’s A had a great night at home against Dreamers B, which sees them keeping their noses in front of TPT in the table. They started brightly and never looked back. Dreamers B were struggling, staring at a whitewash, but managed one frame. But what a disappointing night for them. first points. Unfortunately, it was another frustrating night for the visitors. But at least they took three frames this week ... well, Paul ‘Mad Dog’ Wilson took three frames! Come on guys, you’re getting closer and we’re all rooting for you! Bluebell B are second after a fine 9-3 win at Hoppys B. Craig won all three for the Rangers lads with Grant and Ray also winning big frames. Lucky, lucky league leaders! A DIFFICULT and testing evening came to pass last Friday for both league leaders, who were each 3-1 down, but somehow scraped 5-3 wins via the trebles leg.
Boothen Army, who have topped Division 1 for ages, were given a real fright at Emerald Shamrocks, whom they play again this week, while Phoenix Flights took the last four points at Ourplace Playgirls to steal an unlikely victory. The fat lady ain’t singing just yet! Elsewhere, in Division 2, Summerlands claimed a hefty 7-1 win over Waterfall B, while Legends’ 6-2 success took them above their hosts, Bar Leones. Pas O Nadas B won the last leg at Marilyns to seal a 4-4 draw, and a trebles-
leg win at Picassos for Sundowners served only to make the scoreline a bit more respectable for the visitors, who had already lost five points. Back to Division 1, and Phoenix Bar, still hot on the heels of Boothen Army, had to be at their best to beat an Exiles side who have players who can topple any team on their day. There were some cracking darts thrown on the night, including maximums for Exiles’ Jamie and Phoenix’s Mitch. As certain people say in the pool league, the result didn’t reflect the match … or something like that! Boothen Titans put aside last week’s drubbing at Gaffers and dished out one of their own, taking all eight points at Palms Pool Bar, with John hitting his fourth 180. Grizzly notched his first maximum of the campaign during an-

Agne out as CDT seek a Pep tonic CD Lugo 2 CD Tenerife 0 By Roscoe A LISTLESS defeat on the mainland proved to be the end for CDT manager Raul Agne. He was given the elbow after a poor display, which brought down a strange reign.
Agne, fifth choice for the job when long-serving Alvaro Cervera was sacked at the start of the year, was hardly a popular choice.
But he did bring a more expansive game, and he got the job done. Tenerife stayed up with a little bit to spare and you could see where he wanted the team to go. A decent pre-season was mixed with a poor transfer window. This led to a slow start to the season - what else is new? And then a revival. Only last week, I wrote that the side looked a bit fitter, sharper and more of a unit. Okay, they were not going to win the league, but they certainly had a chance of a top-half finish. Now the axe has come and the gamble begins. President Miguel Conception will celebrate 10 years in charge in Feb-
ruary, and Agne’s departure means he has hired and fired 10 managers. I wonder how many you remember? They are David Amoral, Bernd Krauss, Jose Luis Oltra, Gonzalo Arconada, Juan Carlos Mandia, Antonio Tapia, Antonio Calderon, Andres Garcia Tebar, Am-
aral again, Cervera - and now Agne. Throw in Alfredo Merino and Quique Medina, who were caretakermanagers, and it’s still quite a list. So we welcome former player Pep Marti into the dug-out. It’s not just his first managerial role; it’s also his first coaching
position! It’s certainly a different way of looking at the job. Another glance at all those former bosses does reveal a pattern. Oltra aside, they were all available because they had been fired elsewhere. As a former owner once famously said: “If he got fired from them, how is he now good enough to manage us?” Marti, who played 115 games for Tenerife at the turn of the Millennium, has had a fine career. He won the cup, two Uefa cups and a European super cup, among other success at Sevilla. He has mixed at the highest level. He is young, knows the club and the mentality
of the fans. Sure it’s a risk, but one certainly worth taking. Look at what Garry Monk has done at Swansea, or Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at Burton. Marti was always a thinker on the pitch, and he should hit the ground running in the changing room - a younger voice who may just get something different out of his players. And he must have known he was going to get the job. He made his La Liga debut with Mallorca against Alaves, his Tenerife debut against Alaves, and this weekend, he leads the side out against … you’ve worked it out! We wish him well.

So unpredictable!
IF you’d asked people to predict what the Premier League table would look like after 11 games, nobody would have got anywhere close to its present appearance. Leicester continue to surprise, while Chelsea defeats are becoming commonplace. Long may the unpredictability last!
By Adi Benson
Bournemouth v Newcastle
The Cherries made a bright enough start to the league campaign, but another loss last weekend has seen them slide towards the relegation places. They need to win this one or they will be in the bottom three. The same applies to Newcastle, who suffered a resounding 3-0 derby defeat at Sunderland after a sparkling 6-2 win against Norwich, followed by a 0-0 home draw against Stoke. Just how long owner Mike Ashley will stay patient with Steve McClaren is anybody’s guess. They need to turn their fortunes around because another loss will see a gap open above them. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A
Leicester v Watford
Leicester, currently third, are a real example of how a squad can play together and fight for each other. Riyad Mahrez just gets better, and it is now eight goals in eight games for Jamie Vardy. You wouldn’t bet against him scoring his ninth in this fixture. Watford will be happy
enough with their league position, but they know they can do better. They have been sloppy at the back and poor in front of goal. Yet they are addressing both areas and are beginning to look a halfdecent side. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A
Man Utd v West Brom
With the Red Devils perched in fourth spot, you’d expect the fans to be happy. But when you’ve been as used to success as they have, I suppose a draw against Palace isn’t good enough. Another week passes and more questions are raised about Wayne Rooney - despite his midweek winner in Europe. But will Van Gaal have the nerve to drop him? West Brom are back to being a hard team to get past defensively, but they are still not scoring enough goals. Rondon is starting to show signs of his capabilities, and, should he and Berahino gel, the Baggies will surely be in the top half of the table. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-1
Norwich v Swansea
Norwich are now just two points from the relegation zone. When
any team are promoted, the home form decides their season. It has to be a fortress, and Carrow Road is far from that! But if they can tighten up things at the back, they should be okay. Swansea are definitely under-performing as they sit in the bottom half of the table, the goals drying up for Gomis. Manager Garry Monk needs a Plan B at times, but this should an easier game for the Swans. Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A
Sunderland v Southampton
Sunderland fans must be scratching their heads because it is déjà vu - week in, week out! They have a few players capable of scoring, but they just can’t stop conceding, I’d have thought they would look to strengthen their defence in January, but by then it could be all over anyway. Southampton have started to get into a rhythm and appear to be back to their best. They are dominating games and defending well, but for me, though, they are still short of a good goalscorer, Pelle is okay, but looks uninterested at times. Maybe that is the Italian in him. Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-0
West Ham v Everton
Hammers must be driving their fans mad, beating the big clubs and losing to the ones below them. If they can flirt with a Europa League place, Bilic will have had a good first season. Everton are another team to have found a bit of momentum, and they’ll come into this game with confidence sky-high after last week’s dismantling of Sunderland. Lukaku and Kone linked up really well, and I don’t believe Martinez will tinker with his attacking line-up. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-2
Stoke v Chelsea In seasons gone by, Stoke would have looked at this fixture and hoped for a draw. But they will approach this clash with confidence, especially at home. Although Mark Hughes has changed their style of play, with more creative players, we may see them revert to being defensive and playing on the break. So expect a 35-yard goal from Charlie Adam! Chelsea need to drag themselves out of a slump - but for me, they are in one because of their manager. Mourinho’s constant moaning and disciplinary problems
are causing too much of a distraction, and rumours are coming out of the club about players speaking out against him. They need a big result here. Last season: 0-2 Prediction: Draw
Aston Villa v Man City
Welcome to the Premier League, Remi Garde, and a first home fixture as Villa manager! He’s had so little time to work with the players, and I suspect it will be damage limitation for Villa. Their confidence is shot, but if they park the bus and maybe get a draw, it would be a good platform from which to work. Man City still look favourites for the title, despite the Arsenal challenge, and they are starting to function well without key players such as Aguero and Silva. Qualification on Tuesday from the Champion’s League group will have added to their confidence. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-2
Liverpool v Crystal Palace
The Klopp effect certainly worked in the dismantling of Chelsea, but, with a trip to Russia in the Europa League, the players could be tired. However, I don’t
expect important senior players to get much game-time against Kazan with one eye on this fixture. Palace have become somewhat of a bogey team for Liverpool in recent seasons, and they will hope it continues after a draw against United - a game they should have won, maybe, with the chances they had. They have pace in their attack and, with Liverpool adopting a more pressing style higher up the pitch, they could cause damage. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-3
Arsenal v Spurs
Arsenal are playing well and will not want to lose ground to Man City, but they will be aware of the derby-game dangers. Their treatment room is starting to fill up again, and that doesn’t normally happen until February. So we are about to find out the strength of their squad. Spurs picked up three points against Villa last time out, but they didn’t look convincing. They will need to up the tempo, while keeping it tight at the back. At least they have Harry Kane back scoring, but he needs decent service, and they have been lacking a little in midfield. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-1
Everton make their point IT was another good weekend for Oasis Fm Fantasy Football managers who made the right team selections.
Stars of the season so far are the players from smaller clubs who are really making names for themselves. Maybe it’s time to ditch the superstars! Either way, the season is getting no easier to predict. It is not really surprising, but Everton led the way with regards to players making the point-scoring team of
the week after their demolition of Sunderland. They contributed three in total, including Kone, who was top point-scorer with 20. Southampton featured two players after a good South-Coast derby win, and the rest came from Stoke, Arsenal, Man
City, Leicester, Liverpool and Watford. In the Oasis Fm League, no one has been able to muscle his way to the top as Frank Devany’s team, Baines On Toast, remained in first place. His lead has been cut again, though, and is now just 10 points.
Still in second spot is Passo Utd, coached by Trevor Passingham, who will have been happy with his week. And I’m sure he fancies moving into top spot this weekend. Neils Gooners, managed by Neil Lobban, had a good week, moving nicely up to third spot. But he hoped for more after playing an “All-Out Attack” lineup, which is one of this season’s new features. But it didn’t go exactly according to plan as his midfield didn’t perform well. Ian Barr will be happy with his Barrstard’s,
though, because they which added up to half are team of the week his total. with 90 points.
