Rajoy joy! Issue 960 1st July - 7th July 2016
ACTING Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) scored a clear victory in Sunday’s General Elections. But, as anticipated, his conservatives fell short of the 176 seats required for a parliamentary majority. Continued on Page 3

PM bounces back again Continued from Front However with 137 seats, Rajoy gained 14 more than he did in the December election, and that will prove crucial. By increasing his level of victory, he has a clear mandate from the country to form a Government, and he knows it. “We have been through four tough years, but we’re going in the right direction now, and we’ll continue that move,” he said. “The country wants us to lead and we shall.” There has been anger from the public that they have had to vote again, which was reflected in the turn-out: 69.84%, against 73.21% on 20th December, 2015. It was a great win for Rajoy as his arch-rivals had a horrible night. The Socialist Party (PSOE) held on to its second spot with 85 seats - five fewer that before -but this was still their worst-ever General Election tally. It was even worse for the leftist alliance of Unidos Podemos,
which, surprisingly, lost one million votes, despite gaining two seats (71) from its December effort. Officials had predicted confidently they would finish second and be the official opposition party. It seems that voters took note of Rajoy’s “fear” message against the “radical” and “extremist” Unidos Podemos, which stressed that moderate voters should band together to stop Podemos from reaching government. Ciudadanos, also had a shocker, dropping from 40 to 32 seats. Consequently, the Spanish right emerged stronger than ever, while the left became weaker than before. And Britain’s Brexit vote offered Rajoy some last-minute support for his calls for moderation against populism. So, where do we go from here? The PP cannot simply turn to Ciudadanos for a centre-
right government, because their combined seats numbered just 169 - seven short of the required total. It means that acting Rajoy will seek a grand coalition with the Socialists. It’s the logical move and, though their leader, Pedro Sanchez, loathes Rajoy, he is likely to do a deal “for the sake of the country”. That said, the ‘deal’ could be simply the PSOE abstaining from the investiture vote. That would, effectively, allow Rajoy to be reinstated as head of a minority government. In his “victory” speech, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, Rajoy said he would “talk with everybody”, his goal being “defending Spain and 100% of Spaniards”. The PP’s national executive committee met the Socialists to discuss a governing deal, or for a PSOE abstention at the congressional vote to appoint a new Prime Minister. But both Socialists and the Ciu-
dadanos declined Rajoy’s offers. So the PSOE, still the Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez blames Podemos squarely for the situation. “Pablo Iglesias’ intransigence - the way he only looks after his own personal interests” - is the reason why the PP has improved its results, he said. “The PSOE has managed to preserve its condition as the hegemonic party of the left; it did it on December 20 and it did it again now, after facing 20 parties who had come together with the sole purpose of defeating the PSOE.” The statement bodes ill for any future agreements between the PSOE and Unidos Podemos. Unidos Podemos are still trying to work out how they lost lost 1.2 million votes compared with the first election. “We were expecting different results,” said Iglesias. “The time has come to do some reflecting.”
But, pointedly, he avoided the word “defeat” and defended his alliance with the United Left, saying: “It has revealed itself as the right way from the vantage point of responsibility. We are here to take on responsibility, but I think that there is a lot of future left for us in this country.” Meanwhile, his No.2, Iñigo Errejón, admitted: “These are not good results - they are not what we expected. We have proven that these processes do not occur in a linear fashion, or in the way we would like.” Emerging Ciudadanos lost eight seats as its supporters rallied to the PP and the national cause. Even though it is the party with the closest ideas to Rajoy, Party leader Albert Rivera is unlikely to deal with Rajoy, whom he accuses of widespread corruption. “If there are no changes, we will be in the opposition,” said Rivera, who previously
reached a deal with the PSOE, which did not have enough congressional support to make Sánchez Prime Minister. “I am telling the PP and PSOE that if they are ready to sit down at a table to form a government, then Ciudadanos will be at that table.” He added: “The only condition is not putting seats ahead of Spaniards [interests]. There are over three million Spaniards who said that the centre existed, and that it is here to stay.” It was a fascinating result at the end of a historic week for European politics. Even though the PP were expected to win, the fact that the party achieved an extra 14 seats was beyond everyone’s predictions. Many thought that Rajoy would have to step down if there were to be a working Government. But he not only lives to fight another day … he now has a mandate for the next four years!

Hawking shining the brightest at Starmus THE third Starmus festival, held in Las Americas, has proved to be another massive hit. More than 1,000 people, from all over the world, have enjoyed the most important science festival on earth.
Delegates from countries such as Armenia, Ecuador and Sri Lanka
rubbed shoulders with some of the most important scientists on the planet. Eleven Noble Prizewinners were in attendance, along with astronauts, cosmonauts and erm, a rapper! While the MC Hawking creation brought light musical relief and a fair few giggles, it was the man inspiring his act who again stole the show. This year’s event honoured Stephen Hawking, whose 30-minute
speech on Wednesday brought the house down. The host, Brian Cox, was literally speechless himself afterwards! Hawking went through his life story, showing how his studies and his findings shaped who he was. He also gave some details on his new paper, which is shaking up the way we think about Black Holes. Other highlights included a fascinating talk from legendary music producer
Brian Eno (pictured), who linked science and the universe with how we look at art and everyday events. “Science is where we come together to disprove untruths,” he said. “This leaves us with accepted theories, which we cannot disbelieve.” The event finishes tonight (Friday) with a concert at Santa Cruz auditorium, starring Sarah Brightman, Rick Wakeman, Brian May and Hans Zimmer.
Obama girls in Spain, but Dad gets warning THE Presidential Obama girls, Mum Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha, landed in Madrid on Wednesday for the final leg of their three-nation tour to promote education for girls.
The First Lady was speaking about her “Let Girls Learn” initiative yesterday (Thursday) to a group of girls and young women in the capital city. Spain’s Queen Letizia also addressed the conference, and later met up with Mrs Obama, before the family pre-
pared for their return to Washington, DC today (Friday). Meanwhile, President Barack Obama, who plans to visit Spain next weekend (9-11th July), is scheduled to meet King Felipe VI, and the country’s acting Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy. But he will arrive with a warning from Spanish activists to keep away from Pamplona’s Festival of San Fermín and its infamous “Running of the Bulls”, which starts on Wednesday (6th). White House press secretary Josh Earnest said: “I suspect he probably is interested in attending San Fermin, but I’m not certain the President’s sched-
ule will allow it.” And anyway, Obama may not want to witness the cruelty involved, especially as he is a Nobel Peace Prizewinner! The organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), working with Spanish animal rights group AnimaNaturalis, has written to Obama, asking him to ignore the festival. The running ends at the bullring, where the animals used in the run are fought and killed that evening. And, said PETA’s Daniel Carron: “No matter how you try to disguise this event, it’s hideous and barbaric. “This event has been condemned by the ma-
jority of the compassionate people of Spain. They’re calling it sick and cruel.” The PETA letter says that on the grounds that he is a Peace Prize winner, Obama should not be associated with it. It describes the festival as a crowded, drunken cesspool of violent animal abuse, with bulls being released on to narrow streets, poked and prodded, encouraging them to panic and stampede. Carron said that persuading President Obama to skip Pamplona was a short-term goal, but ending the Running of the Bulls altogether was the ultimate goal.

Cape Town Airport saluted by Tenerife’s Routes Africa CAPE Town Airport won the Routes Africa edition of the Routes 2016 Marketing Awards at Wednesday’s ceremony in Finca Punta del Lomo, in North Tenerife.
The annual Routes Marketing Awards recognise excellence in airport and destination marketing. Airlines vote for the marketing services that support the successful launch of new routes, or the development of existing ones, making them highly-regarded in the aviation industry. Cape Town Airport’s passenger numbers grew last year by 10% to just under 9.7million. And this impressive growth is expected to continue this year, with the airport in a strong
position to reach the 10-million-passenger milestone. The airport has a major capital investment programme, which includes the realignment of its runway at a cost of over three billion rand to enable it to handle larger aircraft. Other developments include a new domestic arrivals’ terminal and an extension to its international departure lounge. The awards, voted for exclusively by airlines, are split into three categories. Cape Town Airport was also named winner of the “over4-million-passengers” category. Abidjan Port Bouet Airport won the “under-4 million-passengers” category, and Seychelles Tourism Board topped the Destination Marketing category. As overall winner, Cape Town Airport will be automatically short-listed for the World Routes
Awards in Chengdu, China, on 26th September. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Auckland Airport and Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board are also short-listed from previous regional wins at the Routes Asia, Routes
Spanish good life swelling economy THE Spanish are spending more money on food and drink - at home or in bars and restaurants and that’s fuelling what little growth shown in recent years by the country’s economy.
Most households depend on a monthly pay packet, or selfemployed earnings. But figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE) demonstrate that, for 34.3% of households, a pension - for retired, disabled or the widowed - is the main source of income. A further 5.71% of households depend on temporary unemployment benefits or welfare checks. Yet the figure has fallen from the 2014 peak of 6.8% in 2014. Prior to the re-
cession, 2.3% 2008 was recorded in 2006. The number of salaried workers has risen to 47.12%, the highest level since 2011. And what’s more, employees make up the biggest spenders, according to the INE. The self-employed make up 10.5% of households, as they did last year. How people earn their living has a big influence on how much money they spend. Households in which the main bread-winner is working, spent 31,095 euros last year, which was 13.4% higher than the average. Households in which the main bread-winner was unemployed spent 17,461 euros - 36% below the average. In the case of households dependent on a pension, the average annual budget was 25,319 euros. Nationality also influences spending, according to the INE,
non-Spaniards spending on average 20,331 euros a year, compared with the 28,066 euros forked out in Spanish households. The area of spending which has grown most since 2014 is drinking and dining out, with a 9.1% increase between 2014-15. Similarly, Spaniards spent 60 euros more in 2015 than the previous year - a 3.9% increase - on culture and entertainment, while there was a 6.8% increase in all-inclusive holidays, along with a 6% hike in buying sports equipment. Broken down by regions, Basque families spent the most last year on average (33,318 euros), followed by Madrid (31,532) and Navarre (31,356). The lowest spending was recorded in Extremadura (22,493 euros), the Canary Islands (23,372) and Andalusia (24,342).
Americas and Routes Europe events. Adrian Newton, group director of Routes Africa organiser UBM EMEA, who presented the awards, said: “We’re delighted to mark the achievements of all of our nominated airports and destinations
in this regional heat of the Routes Marketing Awards. “Year-on year, we are impressed by the calibre of the submissions.” Cape Town Airport’s award was collected by Ali Tounsi, Airports Council International (ACI) Africa’s Secre-
tary-General, on behalf of the airport. The Grand Finale awards brought the curtain down on an extremely successful conference, held in Tenerife for the first time. At the event, Cabildo President Carlos Alonso spoke of Tenerife’s role in the evolution of Africa as an aviation giant. And Mr Newton added that it enabled the Island to “improve its economic ties with the African continent, and become a logistical link between Africa, America and Europe”. The UBM EMEA group director, accompanied by Alonso and Cabildo Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe, said the 200-plus delegates who attended the event, many of them with responsibility for negotiating and making decisions on the creation of new routes, “will understand now why Tenerife is a destination of the highest order”.

Adeje’s Bomberos now the centre of attention THE small plaza near the entrance to Adeje town has been renamed the “Plazoleta de los Bomberos de Adeje”, complete with a statue, paying tribute to the local fire-fighting service.
It was sculpted by Canarian artist Pedro Gómez and erected last Sunday when Adeje Council, led by Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, recognised the sterling work performed by Adeje Volunteer Firefighters since their formation 30 years ago. A parade took place down the Calle Grande to the newly-named “Plazoleta de los Bomberos (small Plaza of the Firefighters) Adeje’s Mayor said: “We are celebrating the existence of a particularly special group of people, who have been
invaluable to the South of Tenerife in its most recent phase. They were born out of a social need in an emerging destination, which needed to be able to rely on nearby help in the case of emergencies, and to meet the demands of a complex society, who need to know they are secure.” He added: “the firefighters are a group of citizens who came together as a volunteer force and, over the years, have won the respect of the local
population for their dedication and commitment, their strength, their willingness to take risks for others, and who have shown us the need for unity between towns.” Michael Mendoza, President of the Association of Volunteer Firefighters, expressed his “gratitude to the Council and the people of Adeje for this gift”, adding: “This plaza reflects who we are, and what we want to bring to the society we live in. “We are a group of volunteers who wish to
assist our neighbours in matters of health, strength and unity, and we count upon your help to be able to do that.” During the past week, various events have been held in the borough to celebrate the Firefighters’ 30th anniversary, including a medal ceremony with their fellowbrigade members in Unterhaching (Germany) with whom they have a special, historic relationship. Medals of honour were awarded to José Rod-
ríguez Sempere and Ricardo Müller Picháida (RIP), and to Carlos Paulsen Rivas and Mayor Rodríguez Fraga. The Adeje’s Volunteer Firefighters were formed in 1986 and, since then, their mission has been to help and assist at emergency situations in South Tenerife. They have played an important part in the growth of Adeje borough, and have been key players in important moments, including the enormous battle to contain the 2012 forest fire.
The brigade, men and women, is based at its station near the main Adeje roundabout and is part of the island network covering the whole of Tenerife. It now incorporates nine volunteer forces and five professional bodies, all working under one central command. Adeje’s Volunteer Firefighters have carried out over 7,000 missions since their foundation, and have been decorated on a number of occasions, both regionally and nationally.
Canaries hub such an attraction for airlines AT least three airlines with hubs in the strategic European markets for the Canary Islands have shown interest in setting up routes. They are keen, we are told, to use the Canary Islands’ Special Zone (ZEC), which encourages companies to use us as a hub. The costs of using the ZEC are considerably lower than many other airports and zones,
which is what low-cost airline Vueling did recently. In fact, the Canary Islands Government, through its public company Turismo de Canarias and Proexca, is already negotiating to complete the same deal with the three unnamed airlines, who will be based in the archipelago. Maria Teresa Lorenzo, the Canarian Govern-
ment’s Tourism Minister, added that the companies, who are not Spanish, are part of internationally-based, strategic markets for the Canary Islands, and that there are real growth prospects. “All of them have asked us in strict confidence, so we cannot give their names,” she said. “But if, in the end, the negotiations come to fruition, the benefits to the
islands would be incalculable - not only for employment, but to increasing connectivity.” At present, the Canary Islands is a “fashionable” destination. Growth prospects, according to data from the Ministry itself, are very good, with 12% growth in the Islands, which is three times above the 4% global traffic average. “This undoubted-
ly shows even more interest in the airlines to settle in the Islands,”added the Minister.” The Archipelago’s increased air traffic above the world average is, in part, down to the ZEC initiative. And Ms Lorenzo said: “It helps us with a strategic position in the tourism market, because we are one of the first European destina-
tions in terms of traffic, and we have the largest number of overnight stays. “We have great potential to be the most important hub of the Atlantic, with EuropeAfrica-America options. Our low tax regime is approved by the European Union, and companies which are installed in the Canaries will be taxed at only 4%.”

Spider bite puts man in hospital
The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Unprecedented IT’S safe to say that nobody can remember a week like it.
I know they say a week in politics is a long time … but even so! David Cameron has gone. Jeremy Corbyn is surely going and Boris Johnson never even started. I’m still scratching my head. For years, Boris had been pro-Europe. Then, suddenly, he goes against his great mate, the Prime Minister, gets Britain out of the EU and, with the job he has coveted for decades within his grasp, he bottles it. I’m not saying he would have beaten Theresa May, but now is surely his time. The next PM will have nearly four years to get everything on a even keel, safe from any real challenge from Labour in 2020. Then there is Spain. How has Mariano Rajoy retained power? For what it’s worth, I think he has been a safe pair of hands and is doing a fine job with the economy. But even his most one eyed-supporter must have feared the worst, ahead of the General Election. His resignation would have been
demanded by every party approached to form a coalition. And yet, somehow, he has gone all Michael Corleone on us. “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” The scenes of him on the stage, kissing his wife and pulling off the widest smile in Spanish history, told its own story. You would have got a massive price at the bookies for him to be Prime Minister today still, and Cameron being the one to resign. Finally, in a week which has divided so many, we mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. It was, simply, the most pointless tragedy of all time: 481,842 Brits and 537,918 Germans lost their lives, as well as over 250,000 French and thousands and thousands from other countries. All brave, young, and, in some cases, very young men. And for what? Today, whatever your views on where our future lies, please remember those who gave their lives so that we have the luxury and the freedom of deciding for ourselves what life and future we want.
TENERIFE and the other Canary Islands, being surrounded by the Atlantic ocean, do not have dangerous animals, mammals and insects which can affect other countries in warm climes.
But that doesn’t mean we have no nasty surprises out there. This week, a man was admitted to Candelaria hospital in Santa Cruz after suffering a spider bite on El Hierro. It is believed that be was bitten by a mamo-

na spider, a cousin of the deadly, black widow spider. Although not fatal, its bite is genuinely dangerous to humans. The incident happened last Friday and the 35-year-old, who fell ill the following day, was carried by medical heli-
the Black Widow, also known as the Mediterranean black widow, and the so-called violin spider (Loxosceles rufescens), whose poisons are different and deadly. The black arachnid’s neuro-toxic venom has few local effects by the bite itself, but does affect the central nervous system. This can cause arrhythmia - an irregular heartbeat - together with fever, abdominal rigidity, and tremors, which can, in theory, lead to the death of people who are already very ill or elderly. However, the Mamona spider has not recorded any known deaths in Europe.
which many people feel is holding the area back. David Gomez, boss of the Iberostar Grand Hotel Mencey, has spoken this week about how much Santa Cruz has changed in the last year or so. “I have a great responsibility, not only because of the importance of having the only five-star establishment in the city, but with the roots the hotel has in the capital,” he said. “The Mencey
has, within its DNA, a relationship with the city itself.” Gomez revealed that, over the past year, the hotel has started to attract new customers, and has a wider base. “I think Santa Cruz is evolving to the tourist needs,” he said. “In 2015, August was the month of higher occupancy, and this year the forecast is that this figure is over 20% higher. “The goal we have set this year is the strength-
ening of the ‘three legs’ in the hotel. The first is the business customer, the lifetime client, who has been there through the good and bad moments by the crisis, and fortunately they remain. “The second leg is the link to the local client, with whom we have been using the head inventing things to entice them. The tourist is the third leg, which is where we are working this year with intensity.”

Solve mystery of bonanza the missing man THE family of a man from the seaside resort of Fleetwood, Lancashire, who went missing, mysteriously, 12 years ago this month in Tenerife, have issued a fresh plea for information about his whereabouts.
Kevin Ainley vanished without trace in June 2004 while working and living here, in the South of the Island. His family, banking on an appeal on the anniversary of his disappearance to uncover fresh information, believe someone must know what happened to him. “We’re desperate for answers,” said his sister, Gemma Brooke. “Every June we realise that another year has passed, yet we’re no closer to knowing where Kevin is. It is heartbreaking. “It is no exaggeration to say that we have been put through 12 years of hell, hoping every single day that we’ll hear from him, or find out what happened. Somebody must know something.” Kevin, aged 24 when he went missing, had lived in both Fleetwood, near Blackpool, and Wakefield, before moving to Playa de Las Americas in March 2004. He had made friends in the area, enjoyed an
active social life and and was working at The Sportsman bar (now known as the Stage Door) in The Patch, handing out leaflets. On the morning of his disappearance, thought to be around 14th June, he had been out with a friend who was holidaying in the area, visiting local bars and clubs. At around midday, Kevin and another friend went for a meal at a Chinese buffet restaurant called Merlin’s, in the City Centre, opposite The Patch. He was last seen by this friend, wearing a blue Ellesse track-suit and walking in the direction of The Sportsman. The following Monday, Kevin failed to turn up for work. but his passport and personal belongings were found at his apartment. Worried friends contacted the authorities, as well as Kevin’s Fleetwood family. About a week after
he had last been seen, his mother went to Fleetwood Police Station and reported him missing. A police probe was launched in Tenerife, while Fleetwood officers helped by following up several lines of enquiry in the UK. However, these were exhausted without success. In 2005, two officers from Lancashire travelled to Tenerife to offer assistance to local police, but were unable to discover what had happened to Kevin. A 2012 Lancashire Constabulary review of the case also failed to establish his whereabouts, or what had happened to him. But Kevin’s family are now hoping a push for information could jog somebody’s memory, or nudge someone into doing the right thing by coming forward with what he/she knows. “We are convinced there must be some-
one out there who saw or heard something,” said Gemma. “However insignificant it seems, it could be the missing piece in the puzzle. “Kevin was my brother and I miss him every single day. I just hope that if someone does know something, he can find it in his heart to come forward and help put us out of our misery.” Det. Insp. Paul Burnside, of Lancashire Police, said: “Kevin’s family have had 12 years of missed birthdays and missed Christmases. and they just want to know what happened to him. “They want some closure, and they believe somebody out there holds the key to solving this case. “Although we have no jurisdiction to investigate his disappearance in Tenerife, we continue to liaise with the Spanish police through Interpol and the British Embassy, and we will pass on any information we receive that could open up lines of enquiry.” He added: “Anybody who thinks he knows something is urged to get in contact with us, and we will pass on the information to our colleagues in Tenerife.” Anyone with information should contact police, quoting reference LC-20160627-0357. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted (in the UK) anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
THE National Lottery’s second-prize number, worth 120,000 euros, was sold in Santa Cruz and other locations last Saturday, leaving 40,214 winners smiling widely. The winning number, worth 600,000 euros to 33,534 winners, was sold
in Sant Quirze del Valles (Barcelona) and Vigo (Pontevedra). The second prize, apart from going to someone in Tenerife, was also spread around Oviedo, Avila, Barcelona, Plasencia (Cáceres), Madrid and Valencia.
Builders bucking the jobless trend DESPITE good figures recorded by the tourism sector this year, the economy’s apparent revival in the Canaries has not, so far, been translated by falling unemployment in major business segments. The exception is the construction industry, which is showing signs of a slight improvement. According to the Canario Employment Observatory (Obecan), between 1st December 2015 and 1st June 2016, job-seekers increased in agriculture, trade, hotels and industry. The only one to break these negatives was the construction sector, which was the hardest-hit by the economic crisis, especially in major tourist areas. However, the overall figures are nothing to shout about because they’ve hardly changed in the last six months. Unemployment has virtually stabilised in South of Tenerife, with even figures month after month, never dropping below the psychological barrier of 20,000 unemployed. Currently, there are
21,436 people looking for work in the municipalities of Arona, Adeje, Granadilla, Guia de Isora, San Miguel, Santiago del Teide, Arico, Fasnia and Vilaflor. This figure has increased by just 217 applicants between December and June, with most sectors recorded upward figures. But at least the construction sector’s jobless total fell from 2,186 to 1,901 in the last six months. Not a lot, but an optimistic sign, perhaps, with summer weather setting in. A large number of the working population falls under the heading of “other sectors”, without specifying what level. This totals 7,989 unemployed people, with 698 active job-seekers. As for the hotel industry, Obecan records that unemployment rose slightly in Adeje, Arona, Granadilla, Guia de Isora, San Miguel and Arico, and went down minimally in Santiago del Teide, Vilaflor and Fasnia. Overall in the region, the number of job-seekers in this sector rose from December by 173 to reach a 6,142 total.

Leaked tapes put Minister on spot La Caleta marina’s JORGE Fernandez Diaz, Spain’s Interior Minister, has stirred a political storm after leaked tapes appeared to show him trying to incriminate political rivals.
The tapes, dating from 2014, allegedly, were published on the Publico website in Spanish, four days before Sunday’s General Election. Opposition party leaders called on him to resign, but Fernandez Diaz called the tapes “biased, out of context and edited”. According to the El Pais daily newspaper, Fernandez Diaz said: “To accuse me of conspiring to commit a
crime is an insult and slander and stupid.” In the transcript, published by Spanish online newspaper Publico, Fernandez Diaz is apparently heard in conversation with Daniel de Alfonso, head of Catalonia’s anti-fraud office. Separatist parties in the north-eastern region have been pushing for independence in defiance of the national government in Madrid. The two men are said to have discussed possible investigations
that could be launched against pro-independence politicians or their relatives, although Alfonso warns that the cases are “weak”. The tapes sparked immediate calls to resign from opposition leaders. Pablo Iglesias, leader of the anti-austerity Podemos party, said the alleged revelations were “one of the most serious turns of events in the country” and should trigger Mr Fernandez Diaz’s “immediate resignation”.
Iglesias said in a radio interview: “I’ve heard the recordings and see a minister apparently using his position and public resources to investigate political opponents.” Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez called for Fernandez Diaz to “immediately leave political life”, while Ciudadanos (Citizens) leader Albert Rivera said his call to quit was conditional on the authenticity of the recordings being proven. But Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the minister had explained himself and should not resign, four days before an election. “Someone is trying to take advantage and fish in troubled waters to see what comes out,” he said.
more than a dream THE idea has been around for a few years, and, in 2013, the project seemed likely to be given the green light. Now, after a few years of being on the back-burner, the concept of installing a marina in La Caleta appears to be back on the agenda. This week, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said he would not rule out its construction in the near future. “It depends on a lot of things,” he said. “Initially, of course, we hoped it would happen. I have a commitment on it (the project). However, I am open to the other possibilities being considered.” Fraga opened up during a Radio El Dia interview, in which he spoke
of future projects and ideas. The 2013 proposal was to build a 131,000sq/m pier, housing 730 berths, with an investment exceeding 50 million euros. This was kicked into the high grass as the country struggled to get back on a better financial footing. But the idea, or the dream, has never really gone away. Today, it seems, the Adeje Mayor is keeping his cards close to his chest about the details. But he did say that “possibilities are being considered, for the locations of La Caleta and La Enramada”. With Fraga not expected to seek re-election at the end of this term, it would be quite a farewell present!
Councils’ collective group supports LGBTIQ society NINE local Councils have launched a group to work together to improve the quality of life for all residents of South Tenerife, and to guarantee equality, respect and the freedom of sexual identity.
Council representatives from Adeje, Arona, Arico, Granadilla de Abona, Fasnia, Guía de Isora, San Miguel de Abona, Santiago del Teide and Vilaflor met on Tuesday to form the South Tenerife Prism. It is a network which underlines the commitment from the participating councils and regional bodies to improve local actions regarding equality. It also hopes to optimise resources promoting the interests of the network with regard to other institutions, and implementing shared objectives and actions.
The nine boroughs, reflecting the group’s logo, are represented by the nine points forming the triangular part of the prism with the colours of the rainbow. The pink, international symbol of the LGBTIQ community, on the other side, promotes visibility, diversity and identity. The Prism will operate at two parallel levels, one with political repre-
sentation from the nine boroughs - councillors who will commit themselves to work for the promotion of policies reflecting equality and non-discrimination. On the other level are the technical personnel, working to implement policies. The group’s main objectives are to promote transversal integration from standpoints of
equality and non-discrimination, including the design and implementation of policies locally in South Tenerife. Awareness-raising in the boroughs about the right of every individual to his or her chosen gender identity is also part of the action plan. The Prism network will create a dialogue for mutual assessment, training, and orienta-
tion and experience exchanges among member boroughs. There will also be work with relevant bodies and institutions at regional and other levels, sharing of resources and materials, etc. Among its first actions, the network will undertake specialised training for the political and technical personnel working on the project, as well as the presentation of a list of good practices, currently being drawn up: 10 practical ways to allow our councils to oversee the correct incorporation of policies that support gender and sexual diversity in all departments. Adeje Equality Councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro said on behalf of the group: “This initiative is reflective of the desire of the participating boroughs to push for policies which guarantee the rights and freedoms of lesbians, gays, transgender persons,
bisexuals, intersexuals, and those who describe themselves as ‘queer’ in South Tenerife. “We strongly believe that working in this field is very relevant, within the development of local politics that favour the visibility of this community, prevent discrimination and promote the respect of identity and sexual diversity. “With concrete actions, we will be building a society that, daily, is more plural, equal and respectful,” Also in attendance at the Prism group’s presentation were Councillors Montserrat González Hernández (Vilaflor); Noelia Beatriz González Navarro (Santiago del Teide); Samuel de León Páez (San Miguel de Abona); Ángeles González Rodríguez (Guía de Isora); Oscar Delgado Melo (Granadilla de Abona); María del Carmen Marrero Rodríguez (Fasnia); David Pérez González (Arona) and Arico’s Dácil Cano García.

POPE Francis believes the Roman Catholic Church should apologise to gay people for the way it has treated them.
He has told reporters that the Church had no right to judge the gay community, and should show them respect. The pontiff also said the Church should seek forgiveness from other people it had marginalised: women, the poor and children forced into

labour. He is now being applauded by many in the gay community for his positive attitude towards homosexuals. But some conservative Catholics have criticised him for making comments which, they say, are ambiguous, about sexual morality. The Pope told report-
ers on his plane, returning from last Sunday’s visit to the Armenian capital of Yerevan: “I will repeat what the catechism of the Church says, that they [homosexuals] should not be discriminated against, that they should be respected, accompanied pastorally.”
Operation leaves Texan gal with English accent LISA Alamia, an American woman diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder, had a jaw operation - and now speaks with an English accent! The mother of three, from Rosenberg, Texas, needed the surgery to correct an overbite, but it ended up changing her speech. Her neurologist, Dr Toby Yalto, who has tested her extensively, has not been unable to determine how she developed the condition, known as “foreign ac-

cent syndrome”. Under 100 people worldwide have developed the syndrome in the last century, according to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Lisa said: “I didn’t know the reaction I was going to get from people. So I didn’t know whether they were going to judge me. Are they going to think I’m lying or even understand how I’m speaking?” She is now being ridiculed about the accent by her family
and friends, after they thought at first that she was joking. Lisa added: “People who don’t know me, they’re like, ‘Hey where are you from?’ When I tell them I’m from Rosenberg, they’re like, ‘Where is that?’ I’m like, ‘Right here in Rosenberg’. ‘Oh, you’re from here… how do you talk like that?’” Lisa, who who had the operation six months ago, is hoping her accent will eventually return to normal.
He added: “I think that the Church not only should apologise … to a gay person whom it offended, but it must also apologise to the poor as well; to the women who have been exploited; to children who have been exploited by [being forced to] work. It must apologise for having blessed so many weapons.” In 2013, Pope Francis reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church’s position that homosexual acts were sinful, although homosexual orientation was not. “If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge?” he asked. Moving on, the Pope said during Sunday’s flight that he hoped the European Union would recover, following the UK’s decision to leave. “There is something that is not working in that bulky union, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water,” he said. “Let’s try
to jump-start things, to re-create.” During his visit to the Armenian capital, the Pope described the mass killing of Armenians under Ottoman Turkish rule in World War One as “genocide”. Turkey has always disputed the numbers killed and angrily rejects the term “genocide”. In response, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli said the Pope’s comments
were “very unfortunate”, adding that it was “possible to see all the reflections and traces of crusader mentality in the actions of the papacy”. The Pope’s spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, later told reporters: “The Pope is on no crusade. He is not trying to organise wars or build walls, but he wants to build bridges. He has not said a word against the Turkish people.”

Prince Charles spent £33,000 on two-day trip last year as…
UK stumps up £40m to keep Royal family TAX-PAYERS in the UK forked out £40.1m last year for the monarchy, with more than £16m spent on the upkeep of royal palaces and other buildings.
That is an increase of £4.6m on the previous financial year, but the Queen and the Royal family’s official travel costs to the taxpayer fell more than £1m to £4m. The single, most expensive trip was taken by the Prince of Wales, whose two-day journey in September from Scotland to Yorkshire on official business cost taxpayers more than £33,000, as the royal accounts showed. Now, Buckingham
Palace and the Government are reviewing the total sum of money the Queen receives each year from the Treasury. The review comes at a time when new figures reveal that the Crown Estate - a £12bn property portfolio which includes Ascot racecourse and most of Regent Street - has made a record annual profit of £304.1m. That money goes to the Treasury, but the Queen receives a Sovereign Grant of 15% of the estate profits, paid two years in arrears. It means the sum she receives under that grant would rise to more than £45m in 2017. Every five years, the Palace and the Government review the formula for calculating the grant, which is being discussed in this finan-
cial year. It is unclear what effect the Brexit vote will have on the review. That’s because it involves the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Prime Minister, who will be replaced by the autumn.
Mafia chief caught napping! ONE of Italy’s most wanted mafia bosses has been caught by police after 20 years on the run in the most docile of places … fast asleep in bed!
Ernesto Fazzalari, 46, was arrested in the southern region of Calabria after fleeing a life sentence for murder. Police described him as a leading figure in the “Ndrangheta”, one of Italy’s most powerful mafia clans, thought to be behind much of Europe’s cocaine trade. Fazzalari, who did not resist arrest, was discovered with a female companion. He first fled in 1996, and was convicted, in absentia, in 1999 of crimes including murder, attempted murder, extortion and mafia association. The Italian Government has hailed the arrest, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi tweet-
ing: “Thank you to the judges and the forces of order. Viva l’Italia.” Fazzalari was the second-most-wanted ma-
fia fugitive after Matteo Messina Denaro, suspected leader of the Sicilian mafia, the Cosa Nostra.
The Queen has seen a 38% rise in the money she receives in the Sovereign Grant in recent years. Sir Alan Reid, keeper of the Privy Purse, said that despite the investment they are making,
the condition of the estate has been deteriorating at a faster rate than which they have been able to respond. He said a significant part of the current grant would be used to increase the annual
works programme, to tackle the backlog in essential maintenance. Meanwhile, Prince Charles’ income from his private Duchy of Cornwall estate of lands, buildings and financial investments has increased by 3.1% to £20.5m, while his tax bill increased by £531,000 to just over £5m. Prince Charles also received £1.4m from the Sovereign Grant and government departments last year. The Duchy of Cornwall owns assets such as London’s Oval cricket ground, and has the Isles of Scilly in its portfolio. The estate, given to the heir to the throne, is made up of 132,518 acres of land across 23 counties, mainly in the south-west of England.

INDIAN filmmakers are being wooed by Spain to use its colourful fiestas and historic monuments as settings for their movies to give the country a larger share of India’s rapidly-growing, overseas, tourism market.
As part of the strategy to attract visitors from the world’s second-most-populous country, Madrid hosted last Sunday’s annual International Indian Film Academy awards, known as the Bollywood Oscars. Spain is already the third-most-visited country in the world, but wants to diversify its tourism base beyond the traditional, northern European sun-seekers, who account for the bulk of visitors. Among the Bollywood stars attending the Madrid ceremony was Hrithik Roshan, star of 2011’s coming-of-age film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which was produced in collaboration with Turespaña, the Spanish tourism promotion agency, The film, about three friends on a pre-marriage road trip across Spain, includes scenes at Buñol town’s infamous Tomatina festival, and the annual San Fermín bull-running festival in Pamplona. With scenes also set in Barcelona, Seville and the Costa Brava beaches, the film was the first major Indian production to be shot extensively in Spain. It was also the highestgrossing Bollywood film of 2011. “There was an immediate impact in the number of people requesting entry visas to travel to Spain,” said Enrique Ruiz de Lera, who led the agency’s talks with the film producers. The year after its release, 60,444 Indians visited Spain - nearly double the 2011 figure - according to the Industry and Tourism Ministry. And last year, the number swelled to 85,000. In 2013, Lonely Planet launched a guide to Spain, aimed specifically at the Indian market, while travel agencies still advertise tours to the locations featured

in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Vikram Misri, India’s ambassador to Spain, said the film “was single-handedly responsible for making Spain a household name in India, and increasing tourism from India”. Turespaña suggested locations. but it gave no direct financial aid to cover the cost of making the film, said Ruiz de Lera. Instead, it helped secure permits to film at key sites, and negotiated deals on hotel rooms and transport for the crew to lower production costs. “We helped a lot with contacts, so filming in Spain was easy,” he said. In return, the producers agreed to include a short advertisement before the start of the film, promoting Spain, by award-winning Spanish director Julio Medem. Spain and India signed a film co-production agreement the year after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was released. Turespaña takes part regularly in film-location fairs in India to pitch the tax breaks and other incentives, available to producers who shoot in Spain. Since Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, several more Indian films have been
shot in Spain, though none has proved as popular at the box office, said Ignacio Ducasse, director of the Mumbai office of Turespaña, They include Dil Dhadakne Do, featuring Anil Kapoor, which was filmed on a ship belonging to Pullmantur,
Spain’s biggest cruise operator. The comedy-drama, about a dysfunctional family on a 10-day Mediterranean cruise, was released last year and includes scenes shot in Barcelona. Kapoor, 59, bestknown internationally
for his role in the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, said during a visit to Madrid in March to promote the Bollywood Oscars: “I’m looking forward to coming back again and again to Spain.” Tourism, a crucial sector for the Spanish
economy, account for around 11% of GDP and one in nine jobs, according to the Tourism Ministry. The UN World Tourism Organisation predicts that 50 million Indian tourists a year will travel abroad by 2020, up from 18 million in 2014.
Italians rescue migrants adrift in rubber dinghies ITALY’S coastguard and navy ships have rescued more than 3,300 migrants adrift on boats in the Mediterranean - including people in 25 rubber dinghies.
The Italian navy, which says a spell of good weather and calm seas enabled Libyabased smugglers to launch boats full of migrants toward its shores, found one man dead on one of the boats. The migrants were saved in an area 35 miles north of the Libyan coastal town of
Sabratha. Last week, thousands of migrants were rescued off Libya, including around 5,000 in one day, after a period of rough seas had prevented the smugglers from launching boats from North Africa. Most of the recentlyrescued migrants are thought to have come from countries in West Africa, including Ghana, Liberia, and Guinea. An Italian navy spokesperson said that apart from the dead man, another four injured migrants were flown by helicopter to a hospital on the Italian island of Lampedusa. The migrants were taken to ports in southern Italy, but it is not
yet known if they will be able to stay in Europe. More than 66,000 migrants, mostly from Africa, have arrived in Italy since the beginning of 2016, according to figures compiled by UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. The International Organisation for Migration said that more than 3,700 migrants died in the Mediterranean last year. The UNHCR says Libya already has at least 100,000 migrants, who are packed into towns and cities along its western coast. A year ago, Europe promised firm action on Libya after 800 migrants were drowned when their overcrowd-
ed boat sank off Italy. Operation Sophia was created as a result, with a dozen naval craft patrolling off Libya’s coast. The operation saw a dramatic increase in rescues, although some critics said smugglers were using this naval force as a “ferry service”. Officials have impounded many boats used by smugglers, but the entire operation is undermined because the gangs import more craft from Europe. Maltese customs found 20 semi-rigid boats aboard a ship heading for Libya late last year. But no action was taken because they did not have official power to seize the consignment.

Gibraltar bring on sub against Spain! G I B R A LTA R ’ S British contingent, as they were fully entitled to, voted overwhelming in the UK Referendum for continued membership (Remain) with 19,322 votes registered, against just 823 for Leave (Brexit).
But following last Friday’s shock Brexit victory, the Spanish couldn’t wait to demonstrate their strength, demanding joint sovereignty over the island within hours. In a radio interview, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Brexit had opened up “new possibilities on Gibraltar
not seen for a very long time”. Yet the next day, the Royal Navy’s attack submarine, HMS Ambush, which carries Tomahawk cruise missiles, arrived at the Rock’s naval port. And though Navy staff insisted the visit was long planned (of course it was) - others have suggested that its arrival sends a positive message to the Spanish that the UK’s position on Gibraltar will not change. A source told the Sun newspaper: “The timing could not be better. The people of Gibraltar are being sent a clear message of reassurance. There will be no discussion on joint sovereignty - the UK Government has made that clear. “These are worrying times for the UK population of Gibraltar, but the sight of the Royal
Navy should soothe those nerves. We’re not going anywhere.” The HMS Ambush, an Astute-class, nuclear fleet submarine, will provide the Royal Navy with unprecedented endurance and operational capabilities. The Foreign Office has issued its reassurance, pledging that the UK will “continue to stand beside Gibraltar” and will never enter into sovereignty negotiations against the wishes of its people. But British Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond has made it clear that the UK will be less able to protect Gibraltar’s interests if it is not inside the European Union. Gibraltar became part of Britain’s overseas territory in 1713 but Spain has, nevertheless, made repeated hints at taking it back.
Catalan ‘rebels’ want a legal way to go solo CATALAN separatists, inspired by Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, and Scotland wanting another independence vote, have intensified their calls for a referendum on a break-away from Spain.
Jordi Sanchez, President of the pro-independence Catalan National Assembly, tweeted: “While Scotland prepares to discuss a second referendum with the EU, we should say without fear that the time for OUR referendum has also arrived.” Separatists in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia have, for years, lobbied for an independence referendum like the one held in Scotland in 2014, which resulted in a vote to remain in the United Kingdom. Last Friday, Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, said a second independence
vote was “on the table” after Britain voted by a 52-48% margin in a referendum to leave the European Union. She told the BBC that while the vote was close across Britain, Scotland “clearly and decisively voted to remain part of the European Union, 62-38%”. Carles Puigdemont, head of the pro-independence government of Catalonia, and one of the few Spanish politicians to criticise the UK’s Remain campaign in Britain, praised the UK referendum. “Democracy won, because the British people were able to vote,” he said.” Spain went to the polls on Sunday for a repeat General Election, following an inconclusive December vote in which no party gained a majority. And the issue of whether to allow Catalonia to hold a referendum on independence was one of the stumbling blocks preventing parties from forming a subsequent coalition government. Anti-austerity party Podemos backed a ref-
erendum, which was fiercely opposed by the Socialist party, its natural ally, as well as the conservative Popular Party (PP) and upstart Ciudadanos, the two other main parties. In November 2014, Catalonia held a symbolic independence vote after Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s PP government blocked it from holding an official referendum. Spanish politicians united in their reaction to Brexit. Over 80% were in favour of independence, but just 2.3 million people out of a total of 6.3m eligible voters took part in the ballot. Gabriel Rufian, a leftwing, Catalan, separatist law-maker in Spain’s national Parliament, praised British Prime Minister David Cameron for allowing Scotland to hold an independence referendum, and calling the subsequent EU vote for last Friday. “We would love to have a right-wing politician like Cameron, who called voters to the polls twice,” he said.

Snap! It’s the way to help stroke victims SIMPLE card games, such as Snap or Snakes and Ladders, can help stroke patients with their recovery, say Canadian researchers.
The scientists found the games improved patients’ motor skills. And playing bingo or a games consol like Wii worked equally well. They told the Lancet Neurology that the type
of task used for motor rehabilitation might be less relevant, as long as it was intensive, repetitive and gets the hands and arms moving. The researchers designed their study to test whether virtual reality gaming, which is being employed increasingly as a rehab therapy for stroke patients, is any better than more traditional games for honing upper-limb motor skills. The Canadian team recruited 141 patients who had recently suffered a stroke, and still had
some impaired movement in one or both of their hands and arms. Approximately half of the patients, at random, were then allocated to the Wii rehab, while the rest were asked to do other recreational activities, such as playing cards. All the patients continued to receive usual stroke-rehabilitation care and support on top of the 10, one-hour sessions of gaming or cardplaying for a fortnight. Both groups showed significant improvement in their motor skills at
the end of the two weeks, and four weeks later. Importantly, both groups fared equally well, say the researchers. While it is not clear from this study how much of the improvement was from the regular strokecare the participants received, other research suggests that adding more therapy is beneficial. Investigator Dr Gustavo Saposnik, from St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, said: “We all like technology and have the tendency to think that new technology is better than old-fashioned strategies, but sometimes that’s not the case. “In this study, we found that simple recreational activities, which can be implemented anywhere, may be as effective as technology.” Alexis Wieroniey, of the UK’s Stroke Association, said the findings were particularly encouraging because they suggest that inexpensive, easilyaccessible activities can
Royal family tribute to the Somme fallen THE 100th anniversary of the bloodiest day in the history of the British army will be commemorated today (Friday) at the Thiepval Memorial in Picardy, northern France.
The Battle of the Somme was fought for five months, with more than one million soldiers killed or wounded. Outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron will join members of the Royal family and President Francois Hollande for the service. Other remembrance events will be held in the area, as well as services at Westminster Abbey and around the UK, to mark the huge loss of life suffered by all nations, The battle was in-
tended to push the entrenched German forces back, decisively, and 1½ million artillery shells pounded the German front-line in the seven days leading up to the “big push”. At 7.30am on 1st July 1916, known as “zerohour”, Commonwealth officers blew their whistles and thousands of soldiers went “over the top”. Many of them walked over no-man’s land, believing there would be nothing left of the en-
emy. But the Germans, aware that a big offensive had been planned, had sat on their heels, awaiting the bombardment to stop. It meant that when the British, French, Irish and Commonwealth soldiers advanced, the enemy were waiting for them … and the loss of life was immense. On the first day of fighting, 19,240 Allied soldiers were killed, and some units lost threequarters of their men in the first 15 minutes.
By the end of that horrific day, more than 57,000 Commonwealth soldiers had been killed, injured or were missing. On Friday, exactly a century later, their sacrifices will be remembered across northern France. The rows of perfectlykept white headstones are the only indication of the vicious fighting - and the 150,000 Commonwealth soldiers buried in 250 military and 150 civilian cemeteries in the area.
help some stroke survivors in their recovery. “Thousands of stroke survivors are left with mobility problems, and this can lead to a devastating loss of independence,” she added. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off either by a clot or a bleed. This can cause symp-
toms such as drooping of the face muscles, slurred speech and numbness and weakness of the arms. It is a medical emergency that needs urgent attention and treatment. People may need a long period of rehabilitation to regain independence, while some will have permanent impairment.

A LANDMARK judgement by Spain’s Supreme Court could finally offer closure to some 100,000 Britons, whose dreams of owning a place in the sun ended in a nightmare.
The ruling paves the way for anyone who paid a deposit to secure an “off-plan” property but lost it in Spain’s financial crisis - to claim back the money. The Spanish costas are still littered with unfinished holiday homes following the country’s financial meltdown in 2008, which drove hundreds of property developers out of business. Would-be buyers, who had paid deposits averaging £40,000, never saw their money again as building firms went bankrupt - or simply disappeared! Now, though, a decision by Spain’s highest court to hold banks responsible for the missing money deposited in their accounts could allow British victims to claim back up to £4bn in lost deposits, according to research by the law firm Spanish Legal Reclaims. Despite the lack of official data, the company estimates that Spanish banks could be forced to refund up to £15bn to those “off-plan” buyers from across Europe, who lost their deposits in the crash. They include Stephanie Davis (pictured) and her late husband, who lost around 75,000 euros on a house they tried to buy on the Costa del Sol. They bought it “off plan”, and had

put down a deposit and made several additional payments, totalling half the 150,000-euro asking price. They were within days of completing the purchase when the developer, Martinsa
Fadesa, went into liquidation. Stephanie was promised she would get her money back … but so far, she has received just 700 euros! She is now retired and living in straitened circum-
stances after losing so much cash. Naturally, she is hoping desperately that the ruling will force the bank which held her money on behalf of the developer to pay it back. “If I could get my money back, it would be amazing, says Stephanie.” With more Britons than any other nationality owning a holiday home in Spain, UK citizens were hit disproportionately hard by Spain’s catastrophic property crash. Spanish Legal Reclaims’ research shows that as many as 100,000 Britons, who paid deposits to reserve an offplan property in Spain, lost some or all their money when the country’s construction industry imploded. Emilio Alvarez, Legal strategist at Spanish Legal Reclaims, explains: “As relatively
small creditors, their chances of getting back their money from a bankrupt developer through the conventional insolvency process were virtually nil. “But the ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court sets a crucial precedent - that the banks which held buyers’ deposits can, in many cases, be held liable for their loss. “While this is wonderful news for the thousands of Britons who became innocent victims of Spain’s financial meltdown, the banks have proved reluctant to pay back what they owe without a fight. “Spanish Legal Reclaims has unparalleled expertise in this area of law, and has formed a dedicated legal team to help non-Spaniards who lost out lodge a successful claim and win their money back.” Spanish Legal reclaims can be contacted by telephone in Spain on 936 804 563 or in the UK on 0845 680 3849. Alternatively, email info@spanishlegalreclaims.com or visit w w w. s p a n i s h l e g a l reclaims.com The projections provided are based on multiple sources of Spanish public and private institutions, and construction sector data. No single official data set exists, showing the numbers of Britons affected by Spain’s property crash, or the precise number of deposits lost.
Spanish Legal Reclaims has extensive knowledge of the market, and its research shows that around 100,000 UK citizens paid deposits to reserve “off-plan” property that was under construction at the time of the 2008 financial crisis. With an average deposit of £40,000, the banks could be forced to repay as much as £15bn to buyers of all nationalities who lost their money, and £4bn to British victims alone. Spain’s Supreme Court has ruled that banks and propertydevelopers are jointly liable for buyer deposits that were not ringfenced from the developer’s bank account. The vast majority of banks failed to do so, meaning that if a developer went bankrupt, the buyer deposits were lost. With failed developers no longer trading, the banks are now liable for buyers’ lost money. Successful claimants are entitled to a full refund, plus interest. *Spanish Legal Reclaims S.L. is a law firm specialising in legal reclaims from the Spanish tax authorities and financial institutions. Founded in 2011, its legal team are experts in Spanish and European law, and act on behalf of thousands of clients from across the EU. It offers its services on a “no-win, no-fee” basis to non-residents of Spain, who lost a deposit paid to secure an “off-plan” Spanish property. The legal precedent underpinning such cases is new, but the firm is proud to have a 100% success rate when representing clients in similar actions.
Microsoft’s misfiring update costs $10,000 A BUSINESS woman from California, whose computer was rendered unusable after an automatic Windows 10 update, has received a $10,000 (£7,500) apology from Microsoft. Teri Goldstein said her Windows 7 computer had tried to update itself automatically to Windows 10 without her permission. She complained that the “update” had made her machine unstable, which meant she could
not use it to run her business. A Microsoft spokesperson said the company had dropped an appeal to save on legal costs. Microsoft has been running an aggressive campaign to plug the latest Windows 10 version of its widely-used operating system, currently available as a free download for computers running Windows 7 and 8. However, many people have ignored the up-
grade because they are running old hardware. They also have software that does not run on Windows 10 and are concerned about the software’s tracking features - or simply do not want it. In February, the company included Windows 10 with its security updates and made it a “recommended update”, which meant it was automatically downloaded and installed unless blocked by the user.
Some people accused the company of trying to “trick” customers into installing the update. The Seattle Times reported that Ms Goldstein’s computer had “slowed to a crawl” after the update, and that Microsoft’s customersupport unit had not fixed the problem. She told the newspaper: “I had never heard of Windows 10 - nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update.”

Euro to take a pounding? By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct
WELL, what a week we had leading up to the Referendum: talk about a rollercoaster, with the Pound going up and up, only to slump in the end!
We saw the pound gain ground on the Monday, when the latest polls showed Remain had taken the lead. Tuesday saw Sterling hit an almost nine year high against the US dollar, and Remain were still showing a nose ahead of the Leave campaign. By Wednesday, the day before voting, it was still too close to call, even though the polls were showing an increase in Remain votes, and Thursday morning we saw sterling to euros (Inter bank rate) at 1.3007. Friday morning brought the Referendum results, showing the British public had voted 52 to 48 in favour of

“We are very worried because Britons account for more than 25% of tourism in Tenerife,” she said. “The triumph of Brexit has left us in shock. We wait to see what the consequences are there.” Ashotel, the biggest hotel employer in South Tenerife, is worried about the future following the UK’s vote to leave the European Union. The devaluation of the pound, fall of the FTSE and the share prices will encourage tour operators to try to force a lower price in 2017 hotel

and, will no doubt do so over the next days and weeks. Although the pound to euro has reached lows that we haven’t seen for a while, it certainly wasn’t hit as badly as GBP-USD, which fell to a 30-year low. So where does this leave us in the Canary Islands? It’s certainly a good time for those who need to change euros to pounds. However, for those looking to change their pounds to euros, it’s not the best it has been - but it’s also not the
worst! Let’s not forget that in 2013, the pound traded consistently below the 1.20 rate. While the current rate might prevent some people from buying their dream property for financial reasons, the political situation doesn’t change things. People were buying and selling property in the Canaries and throughout Europe before we joined the EU,
and they w i l l continue to do so, even when we come out. Once the dust settles on the Brexit situation and the government sets plans in place for the future, we will, hopefully, start to see some stability in the rate. In the meantime, we just have to keep a close eye on any updates about how the UK plans to move forward, which
is what investors will be looking for. Short-term, our analysts are anticipating the rate to stay fairly static, around the level of the 1.20s. However, if we should see a cut in interest rates, be prepared to see sterling to euro move lower to around 1.15 or even 1.10. We also have to bear in mind that in the wake of the UK decision to leave the EU, other members may take the same stance, which is likely to weaken the euro and see GBP-EUR move up to the 1.30 mark. Keep an eye out for any positive data relating to the UK which will strengthen the pound. And in the meantime, watch this space! Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. The friendly experts at Currencies Direct are only a phone call away whenever you need them. At home in Spain since 1999, they have 12 offices across the country, including one in Tenerife, and are set to open more Spanish offices soon. Brexit has left Ashotel reeling
contracts. The knock-on effects could seriously hit our biggest economy. The tourism industry fears that the weakening of the pound and, thus, the rise in prices to tourists in Britain, will see a drop in the number of visitors, together with reduced spending for those on holiday here. Ms Lopez, clearly worried, said: “There is real uncertainty. It has taken us over 10 years to establish prices in line with the quality we offer, and we cannot afford to lose it.” She is also concerned about other matters of interest that worry hoteliers, such as the holiday rental market, which Ashotel wants greater forcefulness by the Canary Islands Government in promoting its
regulations. The Ashotel Vice-President added: “The regional government has to show teeth. It has to control this practice, which is an absolutely-unfair competition.” She wants a sharp increase in the number of inspectors who should be cracking down on illegal holiday rentals. Ms Lopez also argues that there are other factors to consider. “We have to protect our image as a destination, but there is also a security question,” she said. “In the same way that we do not know if there are four people or 20 people in an apartment, the police cannot control who comes and who leaves because no police records are made.”

The Great British Sewing Bee Monday 4th July, BBC2, 21:30
Claudia Winkleman hosts the grand final of the Great British Sewing Bee. Having made it through seven weeks of tough sewing challenges, the three finalists fight it out for the title of Britain’s best amateur sewer. But first, they must create three pieces of evening wear to impress judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young. First up is the pattern challenge, in which the sewers demonstrate their precision by creating an immaculate man’s pin-tucked dress shirt. Next is the alteration challenge. They must use all their sewing ingenuity and imagination by taking a classic tuxedo and transform it into a little black dress. For the final made to measure challenge, the sewers make floor-length evening gowns for a model of their choice. Who has the ability to handle the most delicate, luxurious of fabrics and show off their advanced technical skills under intense pressure?

Celebrity MasterChef BBC1, 19:00
Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. The remaining four celebrities return to MasterChef headquarters as the battle for a semifinal place reaches its climax. The hopefuls must prepare a faultless two-course meal that will not only be judged by John and Gregg, but also by past Celebrity MasterChef champions Phil Vickery and Ade Edmondson, as well as finalist Sam Nixon. It is their last chance to impress for a semi-final place, and emotions run high as the pressure proves too much for some contestants. The celebrity judges deliver some frank and cutting responses to some, with others faring much better. Only the best two contestants can take a step closer to winning the title of Celebrity MasterChef 2016. For those who don’t make the grade, the journey is over.

A burkini from M&S, halal chicken in restaurants, Ramadan aisles in supermarkets - high street brands are increasingly targeting Britain’s Muslim shoppers. From food to fashion, Myriam Francois (pictured) discovers what difference Muslim-friendly brands are making and what it all means for Muslim and nonMuslim consumers alike. Muslim consumers in the UK spend an estimated £20.5 billion a year. But until recently finding halal or ‘permitted’ products - goods that comply with Islamic law - could be a struggle. In The Muslim Pound (working title) journalist Myriam Francois finds out why and how the High Street is starting to recognize Muslim consumers in their marketing campaigns. There’s Mariah Idrissi - the first Muslim woman in a hijab to be used in a campaign by fashion store H&M. Entrepreneur Shazia Saleem was fed up of being unable to eat British staples like shepherd’s pie and sausage rolls, so she started her own business making halal versions of these favourites. And Rose Brown - daughter of UB40 drummer James Brown - became the UK’s youngest franchiser, after including halal certification on her range of vegan creams and cosmetics. But choosing to enter this market is not without risk, as M&S discovered when it decided to sell a swimsuit in the UK which covered the head, arms and legs, known as the burkini. National headlines followed, as well as criticism from within the Muslim community.

China’s Forgotten Emperor Channel 4, 20:00
She’s probably the most controversial woman in Chinese history: Wu Zetian, who rose from lowly concubine to become the only woman in Chinese history to dare to take the title ‘Emperor’. Since her death 1300 years ago, Wu Zetian has been remembered as a callous tyrant who brought calamity to China. But now extraordinary new discoveries are revealing a very different picture of her reign. As archaeologists investigate hidden tombs, spectacular pagodas, gigantic palaces and priceless treasures from her time, they are uncovering a very different story of China’s female Emperor, her skills and her empire. China in the age of Wu Zetian was a military, economic and cultural superpower, whose influence stretched from the edge of the Mediterranean to Japan and India. Recent discoveries reveal the wealth and stability of her reign, and point to her skills as a politician and a leader.

Matron, Medicine And Me: 70 Years Of ch o ice The NHS BBC1, 09.15
70 years ago, when the 1946 National Health Service Bill was presented to Parliament, it promised to revolutionise the healthcare system across the country. To mark the anniversary, Lucy Alexander, Myleene Klass, Oritsé Williams, Miriam Margolyes and Eric Knowles go on a journey to meet the doctors, nurses, porters, cleaning staff and carers who have kept the service going against all the odds, and the patients whose lives have been saved by them. They look at the NHS then and now, seeing how things have changed and evolved through the decades. Since its introduction the NHS has developed into a national institution which has touched most of our lives in one way or another. However, it has faced its share of trials along the way. From the children’s ward to the care of the elderly, Matron, Medicine And Me:70 Years Of The NHS hears the stories of five famous faces - all with a very personal involvement with the NHS. Monday: Lucy Alexander Lucy’s own daughter was looked after by the NHS when she was left paralysed after developing Transverse Myelitis - a rare neurological disease - and was hospitalised for months before needing intense rehabilitation and ongoing treatment. Lucy goes on an emotional journey as she is reunited with the staff who helped to save her daughter’s life. Lucy also traces healthcare in London, from early visiting restrictions to children being looked after today at Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Sheffield 1982. Married mum of one Stephanie sees an ad in the local paper ‘Ann Summers Demonstrators required to run parties selling exotic lingerie. FOR LADIES ONLY. Earn £30-£40 for an evening’s work’ – this could be what she’s looking for. Whilst taking her son, Dean to his first day at school, Steph meets Nita – a no-nonsense mother of four, who’s also struggling with her financial situation. Lonely Pauline is considering adding a macrame owl to her craft folder whilst waiting for her cleaner, Steph to arrive. Her husband Brian is at his business, Spake’s Butchers, reprimanding his apprentice Russell and fiancée Dawn for snogging each other’s faces off when there’s the scrag end to sort. Steph waits for her husband Terry to come home so she can tell him about the Ann Summers ad, but Terry has been laid off from his factory job. He’s hostile even to the idea of her resorting to selling “sex stuff”. Steph arrives at her local Community Centre where the advertised Ann Summers recruitment event is due to start. Just as Steph is about to bottle it, she bumps into Nita who drags her into the hall where they find out its more than just exotic lingerie that will be sold – Steph feels that she doesn’t have the confidence to run the parties – Nita says they should give it a go. That evening at the pub, Steph and Terry are with their friends, Lisa and Barry. Steph sounds out Lisa about hosting a party, Lisa describes sales work as ‘desperate’. Terry is tempted to invest an a cab business but it’ll cost him fifty quid, money he doesn’t have. Steph finds out that Terry is finalising his cab deal and is upset - where did he get the money from. Steph asks Pauline if she’d be willing to host a party at her house. Pauline is mortified. That evening before dinner, as Pauline takes in her lonely surroundings and a social life that revolves around her husband she has a change of heart before heading to the kitchen where she’s got “A bird to baste”. At the party, Pauline is on edge and to her shock, the councillor’s conservative wife, Bunny and her daughter, Hellie, an old school friend of Steph’s turn up. During the marital aids demonstration an appalled Bunny storms out at the sight of “The Stallion” but how does everyone else feel? Terry’s at the pub and loses at a game of darts where he was trying to win the money to invest in the cab. His best mate Barry’s girlfriend Lisa tries to console him. Whilst at the bar, Russell lets slip to him that Dawn is at a party hosted by his boss, Brian’s wife, and that their cleaner is selling sexy underwear and marital aids. Terry is furious when he realises Steph has gone behind his back.

Professor Brian Cox combines some of the most spectacular sights on Earth with our understanding of the universe, to reveal how our planet’s beauty is created. In episode one, The Universe In A Snowflake, Brian uncovers how the stunning diversity of shapes in our natural world are shadows of the rules that govern the Universe. In Northern Spain he shows how a breathtaking attempt by hundreds of people to build the highest human tower reveals the force that shapes our planet. In Nepal, honeyhunters seek out giant beehives that cling to precipitous cliff walls. The hexagonal honeycombs conceal a mathematical rule. And off the coast of Canada Brian explains how some of the most irregular, dangerous shapes in nature - massive icebergs that surge down from Greenland and into shipping lanes of the Atlantic - emerge from a powerful yet infinitely small forces.

When a young boy is disturbed by terrifying visions, Nathan finds himself drawn into another case. Charlie’s nightmarish hallucinations lead him into increasingly dangerous situations and Nathan must find a way to help him, before his imaginary friends do some serious harm. But Nathan’s belief in scientific and rational explanations is rocked by a growing sense of unease, as he starts to experience some mysterious visions of his own. Are all these strange events linked merely by coincidence, or is there something deeply wrong at Shepzoy? Gwen meanwhile recognises Charlotte wants a baby, and tries to find a way to help her. But Charlotte must also steer a safe course for the farm while her husband is preoccupied, and the possibility of a new railway line across their land could offer the chance she’s been hoping for.

Boy Meets Girl BBC2, 22.00
Boy Meets Girl returns for a second series. Judy (Rebecca Root) and Leo (Harry Hepple) are in love, committed to one another and making plans for a future together. Their respective families are very supportive but cannot help sticking their noses in and causing a fair amount of chaos along the way. Leo and Judy are living together happily at Peggy’s (Jane Duvitski) house, even if there’s not a lot of privacy to be had with Jackie in residence too. However, when Leo receives an enticing job offer - at the same time that Peggy starts experiencing some worrying health issues - the couple’s relationship faces a major challenge and there are big questions to be resolved. Anji is alarmed to find that the salon has issues with rats but Jackie turns the situation to her advantage when she hooks up with the pest controller. Tony (Nigel Betts) cooks up a plan to use his redundancy money to start a new business venture and James (Jonny Dixon) has a surprising romantic encounter - and is even more surprised to find that he might, finally, be joining the workforce.

What Britain Buys Channel 4, 20:00
Mary Portas looks at the impact Brazil is having on our bottoms. With M&S predicting that the shape of the humble knicker is changing, what might this mean for the other great fashion staple: jeans? As a country, the UK is moving away from disposable fashion and spending more on experiences - whether it’s cycling, going to festivals or planning weddings. Britain is a world leader of the outdoor music event, with festivals having a direct impact on high street trends. Mary also meets some mamils - who form a big part of the booming cycle industry. There’s also a look at the impact that social media is having on weddings, from cakes to dresses and flowers. And, lastly, should you digitally detox and swap your smart phone for a new ‘dumb’ phone?

BBC1, 13:45
ITV2, 22.00
Sue Barker presents live coverage from the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, where the women’s semi-finals are taking place. At this stage of last year’s tournament, top seed Serena Williams continued her dominant run against Maria Sharapova with a comprehensive victory to reach her 25th Grand Slam final.
Rick Edwards hosts the brand new series of the outrageously competitive panel show that pushes celebrities to their limits. The only thing that can save them is to use their Safeword to make it all stop. Tonight, Outnumbered’s sitcom star Tyger Drew Honey goes head to head with Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway as they have their social media accounts hijacked and their professional lives poked by team captains Katherine Ryan and David Morgan, alongside comics Matthew Crosby and Andrew Maxwell.

By Vanessa Vee I LOVE seeking out new, direct destinations to travel to from Tenerife, and this week I’m taking a brief look at beautiful, beautiful Venice. Flying direct from here, it has to be done!
Venice is, perhaps, one of the most famous and most beautiful cities in Italy. And every year, millions of tourists come to walk the narrow streets on the “city on water”, take boat rides along the canals and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. With the large number of visitors, you’d think Venice is all but relaxed. But you’d be surprised to find just how easy it is to get away from the busy areas and be alone in
1st July - 7th July 2016
Splashing time in the City of Water
a neighbourhood, the only sound being the water smashing against the boats on the canal. Discovering this wonderful city is a must and the earlier the better, in my opinion. The streets are quieter before 10am, and, in summer time, the weather is still mild and nice. Eight in the morning or earlier is actually perfect, especially if you
plan on eating breakfast out. On and around St Mark Square, you’ll find historic cafes and buildings, all famed for their wonderful architecture and fascinating past. There’s the Bell Tower of St Mark, which provides a stunning view over the city and harbour, the clock-tower, with its astronomical clock, and Doge’s Palace, which also served
as Casanova’s jail. Venice is small, merely a cluster of tiny islands, connected by a labyrinth of canals and alleyways, just an arm’s width across. It isn’t difficult to navigate around, and you won’t get lost. A threeIsland cruise is offered to the islands of Burano, Murano and Torcello for 19 euros. But you can also reach these islands
and Lido, a popular beach resort, by Vaparetto, the water-bus system. The central waterway is the Grand Canal’s two-mile stretch and from that, smaller canals branch out. There are said to be 177 canals following old, natural water-courses, meandering through the city. When the tides are
high, parts of the city flood, and wooden walkways are provided. There are so many fascinating sights and scenes to take in that it all seems quite surreal on occasions. But Venice is definitely a destination to be included on everyone’s “bucket list”. Tenerife Sunshine Travel are offering minibreaks to Venice, starting from only 650 euros in total, for two adults sharing a central Venice boutique hotel, bed and breakfast, and including return flights from Tenerife. Breaks can be tailor-made to suit and many date options are available. Please email travel@ tenerifesunshine.com or ring 922 751 867, or call into the Travel Centre in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos. Open seven days a week and open until 7pm on weekdays.

THE NEW CHIC
By Carl Pattison
THERE IS nothing more chic or stylish - than a woman with a well-cut, asymmetric hairstyle. That constant flicking of the fringe to one side is so feminine, and draws immediate attention to the eyes.
Not everyone has been brave enough to try this cut, but, when my clients do, they are inundated with compliments. It’s such an easy style to maintain, and the secret is in the precision cut. This makes styling it at home a fuss-free, easy-to-wear haircut. Blow-drying is minimal because the cut simply falls into place - great for those of you who aren’t that clever at drying and upkeep. As this is a classic, precision cut, it will last until your next salon visit,
and will still look amazing when you return. Your stylist will show you the best options to achieve it. It’s all dependant on your natural hair growth, especially around the hairline and nape. If you go for this amazing style, opt for a simple, full colour because this always looks more chic. Stay away from highlights or fussy shades, as the cut should show off the hair, and not an
overbearing colour. Icy blondes and baby ones also look so good with this cut - as do blacks, and even chocolatebrowns. As long as the colour enhances the haircut, that’s what is important. If your hair has turned platinum with age, naturally, this cut is an excellent way to show off this shade. And, as it’s such a youthful style, it will take off a few years as well!
NEW FLOWER-POWER By Carl Pattison
WHEN I think of floral fashion, the words dull and mumsy come to mind, but this summer’s florals have made me think again.
Out go dainty flower prints, and in come big,
bold statement flowers that really catch the eye. Surprisingly, black has shown up in many stores, and this looks so stylish on a summer outfit because it really accentuates the bolder prints. If you choose all-out floral, look for statement florals that are brash and eye-popping. Leave behind anything
that looks too fussy and cluttered. Your new florals should stand out from the crowd, and not fade into the background. Opt for larger-printed fabrics, which don’t cover the whole item, be it a dress, jacket or skirt. This will ensure that the flower print gets the attention, and not the item you are wearing. Tie in your look by matching the floral colour to your shoes and bag, and don’t add in more florals on those items. Let the flowers do the talking on your clothing. Fuscias and reds look stunning as this year’s summer florals, as well as yellows and greens. Any colour that will create an impression is what you should be aiming for. Don’t be afraid to go for something a little bolder, because standing out in this summer’s florals is what they are all about.
Hospital’s 1,400 HIV patients is a fraction CANDELARIA Hospital, in Santa Cruz, dealt with 1,400 patients affected with HIV last year. But the National AIDS Plan in Spain believes there may be around 160,000 people in the country living with the virus.
Drug therapy for a patient consists of a combined triple therapy, three anti-retroviral drugs from different pharmacological groups, which act by attacking the virus, via different mechanisms of action. In some cases, they may be presented in combinations and constitute a single tablet,
incorporating the three drugs. A treatment for a patient with HIV costs between 630-800 euros per month, depending on the drugs chosen. June marks 35 years since the first known cases of AIDS was recognised in the world. HIV, which leads to AIDS, is a virus that infects cells of the immune system and destroys or disrupts their functioning. This leads to progressive deterioration of the system and ends up producing an immune deficiency. Although a vaccine against this infection has not yet been found, three decades on we can speak of a “chronic infection and not a fatal disease”, said Dr. Marcelino Hayek, Chairman of Infections at Candelaria.
“The approach of this disease has undergone a 180-degree turn over the last few years, and this is very positive.” The triple ALARA therapy (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), called Haart (highly-active therapy) was established in 1996. And, thanks to drug treatment and early diagnosis, patients have a high quality of life and can, of course, lead a normal life. “In fact, they may be carrying the virus and never develop the disease,” said Dr Hayek. And of the 160,000-orso people living with HIV, 30% are undiagnosed, “either because they are unaware that they co-exist with this virus or, because, sensing they can be living with it, they do not get tested,” he added.

Here’s why you just might feel so weary
preferences
By Val Sainsbury
By Miruna Voicu
YOU’LL probably know the feeling. You’re listless, yawning all the time and wondering why you feel so tired when you’ve been doing precious little. And even a nap can’t revive you.
THE use of colour has always been a useful tool for psychologists to analyse people. Children are easily motivated by colour, as are adults, too.
It’s called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and it even baffles scientists? Some have been known to question whether the condition actually exists. Now, though, a new study by researchers from New York’s Cornell University may have shed light on a biological cause, after finding that patients with chronic fatigue have an altered gut microbiome (gut bacteria under a magnifying glass). They discovered that people with CFS have abnormalities in their gut microbiome. Senior author Maureen Hanson, from Cornell’s Departments of Molecular Biology and Genetics and Microbiology, with colleagues, have published their findings in the Microbiome journal. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is a condition characterised by extreme fatigue that does not improve with rest. Aside from persistent fatigue, symptoms used to diagnose ME/CFS include unrefreshing sleep, headache, joint pain, sore throat, tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpits, problems with concentration and memory, and severe exhaustion and sickness after exercise or mental exertion. A diagnosis of CFS may be made if four or more of these symptoms last six months or longer. Other symptoms of the condition may include visual problems, dizziness or fainting, brain fog, and irritable bowel. Because the CFS
symptoms are most similar to those of other illnesses, the condition can be tricky to diagnose. As such, it is unclear how many people in the US have CFS, though estimates suggest it affects around one million. Another factor that makes CFS difficult to diagnose is that the cause of the condition is unknown. Despite years of study, researchers can’t reach a definitive conclusion about what triggers CFS, leading some investigators to suggest the condition is psychosomatic - caused by anxiety, stress, or other psychological factors. But Maureen Hanson and colleagues say their new study offers evidence that CFS is not psychosomatic, after finding that people with the condition have abnormalities in the gut microbiome - the population of microbes in the intestine. To reach their findings, the researchers analysed the stool and blood samples of 48 people diagnosed with CFS, alongside the samples of 39 healthy controls. Compared with the “healthy” samples, the stool samples from CFS patients showed reduced gut bacteria diversity, fewer antiinflammatory bacteria, and more pro-inflammatory bacteria. The team noted that such abnormalities in gut bacteria were often seen in the stool samples of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which are inflammatory bowel
diseases. Additionally, the researchers found that the blood samples of patients with CFS contained markers of inflammation. They say this is likely to be a result of bacteria entering the blood because of a leaky gut, triggered by intestinal problems. The team explains that when such bacteria enter the blood, this can set off an immune response, which could exacerbate symptoms of CFS. Using the newly-obtained information from stool and blood samples, the researchers found they could correctly diagnose CFS in 83% of patients, -which could pave the way for new diagnostic and treatment methods for the condition. Ludovic Giloteaux, of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell and first author, said: “In the future, we could see this technique as a complement to other non-invasive diagnoses. “But if we have a better idea of what is going on with these gut microbes and patients, maybe clinicians could consider changing diets, using prebiotics such as dietary fibres or probiotics to help treat the disease.” The researchers admit they are unable to determine whether altered gut bacteria is a cause of CFS, or a result of the condition, which they plan to investigate in future studies. But they believe their current findings may help gain a better understanding of the underlying causes of CFS.

Likewise, designers of homes, businesses and websites use colour to attract their target audience and influence people´s mood and behaviour. Most of us are unaware that so much thought has gone into which colour to use to manipulate our senses. Bright red, for example, is not a relaxing shade. It relates to blood, fire and danger, and stimulates the senses, while black is associated with darkness, death and fear. While we wouldn’t necessarily consider how colour is used to affect our mood, it is all around us. For example,
most of the fast-food restaurants are keen on red. That’s because, once you have bought your food, they actually want you to eat up and leave as soon as possible! Equally, you would never see a combination of red and black in schools or hospitals because these dramatic colours can inspire anger, fear and anxiety. Green, on the other hand, is a popular hue for waiting rooms (the famous TV Green Room, say), hospitals, schools, etc, because we associate it with nature, spring and revival. Yellow is a happy colour, encouraging us to smile and communicate with each other because
it reminds us of sunshine. The hue of the colour is also important. Children are attracted to bright, primary shades, and there is evidence that this changes with age, colour choices becoming less violent and more tasteful. It then continues until older people tend to find subdued colours more attractive and restful. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t use your favourite colour to decorate the home. But it might explain why you find yourself attracted to certain hues and intensities of colours. And why, if you choose an accent colour like red, it works in small doses only.

Doberman not so taxing
Siam Park notches a glorious hat-trick SIAM Park has again been recognised as the best water park in the world by prestigious travel web portal TripAdvisor for the third consecutive year.
The Tenerife “Water Kingdom” was awarded the Travellers’ Choice Award for the third year in a row at a ceremony on its own paradisical beach. Wolfgang Kiessling, President of Loro Parque and Siam Park, and Vice President Christoph Kiessling, presided over the event, which attracted some 200 people. Among the dignitaries were Cristóbal de la Rosa, the Canarian Government’s Tourism Vice Councillor; Cabildo Tourism Councillor Alberto Bernabé, and Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga. There were also many representatives of the Canaries’ tourism sector, as well as several journalists from the national and international media. Blanca Zayas, TripAdvisor’s Director of Communication in Spain, presented the award to Christoph Kiessling, who said: “It is an honour to Siam Park to receive the Travellers’ Choice Award of TripAdvisor for the third consecutive year - a recognition that is the result of team-work.” He added: “Dedication to service, and love for detail, are recognised by
visitors from around the world, for which we are extremely grateful. “This award will encourage us to continue working with effort and enthusiasm for excellence every day.” Wolfgang Kiessling also expressed his joy at having received this distinction, which, he said, “consolidates the Park’s leadership”. He added: “Although I promised myself not to mention the word ‘pride’, the truth is that I feel very proud. “This recognition is part of everyone, and we are moving towards a truly strong and prestigious company, thanks to the Island of Tenerife.” The Siam Park President also stressed that 98% of jobs were occupied by Canarians.
Cristóbal de la Rosa, spoke of the importance of Loro Park’s “meaningful recognition from TripAdvisor for the third time in a row”. He also highlighted the huge impact Siam Park has made on tourism in Tenerife and the Canary Islands overall. As the Island’s Tourism Councillor, Alberto Bernabé said Siam Park was true enjoyment for visitors. “That’s the reason why tourists come back, and others are curious to come to Tenerife,” he added. “This experience ensures that the visitors return home fully satisfied. This sense of satisfaction is key to our common labour.” In addition, Bernabé confirmed that “excellence” has become the
trademark of the whole Loro Parque family. Adeje Mayor Fraga congratulated the entire Siam Park team, highlighting the huge effort and involvement of the Kiessling family in the community, by generating jobs in Adeje and the surrounding areas. Loro Parque and Siam Park have won several TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence, awarded exclusively to those attractions which have registered excellent ratings from visitors over the past 12 months (with scores above 4 out of 5). Both Loro Parque and Siam Park have been integrated into TripAdvisor’s Hall of Fame, having received these certificates steadily over the last five years.
THE Doberman Pinscher is a medium-large breed of domestic dog, originally developed around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector from Germany. It is a mixture of breeds, which include the German Shepherd, German Short-haired Pointer, Great Dane, Greyhound, and Weimaraner. But, most notably, the Beauceron, German Pinscher, and Rottweiler. The Doberman, powerful in the hindquarters but top-heavy because of its deep chest, is still an athletic animal, and many excel in agility and obedience trials. Doberman Pinschers are renowned as intelligent, alert, tenaciouslyloyal companions and guard-dogs. Personality varies a great deal between each Doberman, but, if taken care of and trained properly, they tend to be loving and devoted companions. The Doberman is driven, strong, and sometimes stubborn, and owning one requires commitment and care,. But if well-trained, they can be wonderful family companions. With a consistent approach they can be easy to train and will learn very quickly. As with all well-trained dogs, they can be excellent with children. Dobermans adapt quickly, though they take their cue from their leader Are you sold? If so, we have two beauties for you, both males, Maxwell and Boo. The craft of art in our Summer time THE Summer Exhibition Tenerife soaks this 2016 summer with freshness and colour, through the works of more than 90 young artists in the halls of the Tenerife Fine Art Centre, in Santa Cruz. The exhibition, featuring many Canarians, is open every day from 10am-8pm throughout July, August and September. It is the second international joint exhibition, showcasing the artists’ visions and ideas of the summer. And it offers the public an extensive, visual tour of the social phenomenon that summer has become since late 19th century, when the coast was discovered as a new space for leisure, social relationship, health and rest. The enjoyment of nature, light, colour, sea, clothing, terraces, beaches, walks and sounds are incorporated into the poetics of these young artists. They are all accompanied by literary phrases which have immortalised the summer, with those by authors like Shakespeare, Antonio
Machado, Emily Dickinson, Edith Wharton and Virginia Wolf built into the project. You can delve into magical, warm scenes along rivers, pools and beaches, with bright scenes reflecting the freedom of holidays children playing, plus hours of rest and relaxation for adults. Then there are the landscapes, the enjoyment of the green or yellow nature, wild or domesticated, and always full of splendour, as well as outdoor activities, such as walks along the beach, playing in the sand, getting lost in the countryside, water-sport and leisure activities. Scenes also include outdoor reading, and napping in a sunbed under the shade of a tree. And, naturally, sunlight is one of the most important elements, with strong light filling every picture. The exhibition, comprising the latest, contemporary art, interconnects three concepts: art, landscape and tourism, including visitors to the Island, enjoying their summer on our shores.

Cats Welfare news
Ten common cat myths 1. Black cats are unlucky They have been the subject of myth and folklore for centuries, and while in some countries they are considered unlucky, including here in Spain, cats are said to bring good fortune in other parts of the world. The reality is that unwanted and abandoned black cats are notoriously difficult to rehome. And the only supernatural powers black cats possess are ones of unconditional love and affection, just like any other cat. 2. All cats hate water Most domestic moggies do not enjoy getting wet, and scientists believe the reason they hate water is because their coats don’t dry very quickly, which can leave them feeling uncomfortable. Water is also likely to weigh down the usuallyagile ones, which means they can’t escape danger as quickly. 3. They are unloving Domestic cats are, by nature, more independent than domestic dogs because they aren’t bred to spend a lot of time around humans. But, as anyone who’s come home from a hard day’s graft and has the cat jump on to his/her lap for a fuss will testify, cats love to be stroked and patted. 4. They always land on
their feet They always seem to land on their feet when falling from a height because they have a ‘righting reflex’, which enables them to twist around very quickly in the air when falling. Sadly, vets are called out to treat cats who have fallen from great heights, often from windows several storeys high. 5. They have nine lives Nobody really knows the origin of this myth, but there are a number of possibilities. It’s more likely that the myth has developed over time through their ability to get themselves out of sticky situations, with their agility and dexterity. 6. Cats purr only when they are happy They don’t only purr when their happy. They
can also purr when they’re frightened, feeling unwell or in pain, to provide their own comfort. he females also purr to comfort their young. 7. They can see in darkness No, they are unable to see in total darkness, any more than humans can. But they are much better adapted than us to seeing in low levels of light. 8. They’re nocturnal No they’re not, but they are are most active at dawn and dusk, when hunting opportunities are rife and there’s enough light for them to see well. Just because your cat is domesticated, it doesn’t mean hunting is ruled out, even if food is readily available. 9. Cows’ milk for cats? Despite popular be-
lief, they do not need milk. If they are fed a balanced diet, they will get all the nutrients they need that way. Milk can upset their stomach, particularly if they are not used to it. This is because, once weaned, many cats become lactoseintolerant as they lose the ability to produce the enzyme needed to digest it properly. Tiny kittens must drink milk in order to survive, but ONLY their mother’s or special formula milk purchased from a vet or pet shop. NEVER give a kitten cows milk. 10. They dislike other cats For the most part, cats can be social and capable of forming friendships with their own kind. In fact, feral cats tend to live in colonies. But they tend not to like sharing, so if there’s competition for resources it can cause friction. Adopt our kittens We have lots of cats and kittens available for adoption. If you adopt two kittens, Cats Welfare will pay for the first year’s injections, microchip and neutering for the second kitten. Black kittens are hard to home so we also offer the first year’s kitten injections, microchip and neutering. Ring or whatsapp Maria for more details on 646 629 129 (7 days a week, 9am-6pm).
Accion del Sol news
Katra’s really flying high OUR week began with the gorgeous Katra being adopted by a lovely English couple, Brian and Georgina, and we are so happy that she will be loved and cared for in her new life there. Keep pets cool Please remember that with the high summer temperatures now upon us, keep your pets safe by ensuring they have plenty of shade and cool water. A frozen cool-box ice-block in a bucket of water should suffice, or add a handful of ice cubes. Do avoid walking your dog on the hot pavements to avoid burning their pads. And never, ever leave your pet in a
car because the inside can get extremely hot, and quickly! This can have a detrimental effect on the animal a lot sooner than you may think. When the temperature reaches 22C/72F outside, the temperature inside a car can reach 47C/117F within an hour. And leaving your window open, or covering the windscreen, hardly cools down the vehicle. Dogs in hot cars can begin to pant very quickly, which could signal the start of heatstroke. And once it gets this far, your animal could die very quickly. If you see a dog locked in a car during the hot
weather, please contact the local police immediately … you might just save its life. Healthy and hearty We still have 200 dogs looking for new loving homes, so please pop in for a visit if you are looking to adopt a dog. Rest assured that every dog is sterilised or castrated, microchipped, inoculated, heartworm-free and passported. Your help needed Please call the refuge on 922 778 630 if you can lend a hand in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. If you
have any of these items to spare, we really would appreciate them. Visiting hours You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Email the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier. org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del SOL.

Boxer Samuel carries Canarian flag to Rio THE Canary Islands will have a boxer in the Olympic Games! Samuel Carmona Heredia will proudly represent Spain after winning a final qualifier last weekend in Baku.
It was quite an achievement for the 20-year-old, from Gran Canaria, after beating Commonwealth Games silver medallist L Devendro Singh to clinch an Olympic berth at the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) World Qualifying Tournament in Azerbaijan. With only two spots available in the 49kg category, it was win or bust for him. It was a close, tight contest, but the plucky Canarian
sneaked home. His parents have been speaking this week about the achievement, his Dad Antonio saying: “This has filled us with happiness and pride and joy.” Mum Ana said she raised her three children, Joseph, Samuel and Fran, under strict
religious morality, and she believes that helped Samuel achieve his goal. “Samuel always carries a Bible and reflects on what the scriptures teach,” she said. “That has given him the strength to fulfil his dream. “He started with box-
ing gloves that weighed more than he was when he was about eight years old. We did not really give him any grace in the sport. But he insisted, and there was no way were we able to remove it from his thoughts.” His father added: “He
was always watching sport, or in the garage, practising. He was a premature child who neither grew nor gained much weight. I was afraid that he might receive a bad blow … and I still have that fear. But over time I’ve learned to take it.”
Heredia has improved a lot over the last year. The Baku event was his last chance to get on the plane, and he grabbed it with both fists! “No one deserves it more than he does,” said Antonio. “You have to take into account the many sacrifices he has been forced to make. It’s a year since he left home for a scholarship in Madrid. It was hard, and it took us a while to accept, but we understood that it was the best way for Samuel. “We find it hard not having him home every day, seeing him every day, but he became a man from sport, and righteousness makes us happy.” His proud father added: “And already, going to the Games is something we never imagined!”
Pearly Grey dish up Cabildo gets red-hot fund-raiser on its bike! WITH temperatures in the region of 35C, Pearly Grey Ocean Club hosted the seventh annual Ingane Yami Golf Tournament at Golf Costa Adeje. We returned to this fabulous course for an excellent day of golf and fund-raising, again teaming up with our media partners, Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly, to help promote the event and ensure that even on one of the hottest days of the year, we still attracted a good turn-out of 84 players. This would not have been possible without the help and participation of Steve Moore and Mike Setch, who each year provide us with players from their golf societies,The Rabbits and The Yellow Shirts. Pearly Grey and Ingane Yami extend their thanks and appreciation to all the players who turned up to help make this event one of the best on the Tenerife golfing calendar. This event would not
be possible without our sponsors, many of whom have been with us since our first tournament back in 2010. And each year you return and support us. We also welcomed some new sponsors this year and we hope you will be with us again next year. Thanks to your support, we have raised around 19,000 euros which, with a favourable exchange rate, converts to 318,000 South African Rand. Special thanks to our Gold sponsors, Dorada, and official Pepsi distributor Embotelladora Canarias, and to our new Platinum sponsor Girabebe SL, which also
provided a hospitality tent on the golf course. We would also like to thank all the Silver and Bronze sponsors. Between you, we had 39 sponsors participating, and we really do appreciate your support. In addition, we thank the many companies and individuals who donated prizes and gifts, which helped make the raffle and auction a great success. The tournament began with a shotgun start, and 21 teams went into battle, striving to be crowned 2016 winners. Over the next four hours, each team made their way around the perfectly-condi-
TENERIFE Cabildo has added a new tourism goal to its Strategic Framework 2016-2021 Annual Performances report. Officials will conduct various measures to promote bike safely, at a cost of 2.7m euros over the next couple of years. President Carlos Alonso, accompanied by Development Director Miguel Becerra and
Roads Director Ofelia Manjon, this week presented some new measures to cyclists’ associations and businessmen associated with cycling. The idea is to make it safer to ride a bike and, hopefully, lead to a boom in cycling tourism on the Island. The associations say there have already been great strides and im-
tioned Costa Adeje course, combating the intense heat. It wasn’t a day to be without liquid refreshment, and we had plenty on hand with water, Aquarade and Dorada. The competition was
closely contested, and the eventual winners were determined by how they performed on the back nine holes. The first three places went to: 1. Phil Hornby, Ian Hamilton, Brian How-
provements in Tenerife regarding safe cycling. Alonso, no stranger to a social pedal, said he had “already seen a marked improvement”. And Ofelia Manjon added: “The actions of the Cabildo to improve cycling tours are aimed not only at professionals but also vulnerable cyclists, including under-16s, the elderly and disabled.” ard and Tallis, on 49pts 2. Paul Fellows, Bradley Greenwood, Dave Morales and Paul Greenwood, also 49pts 3. Jose Maria, Thomas Andrews, Noreen Howard and Jan Brockwell, 48pts

Competitive, or what! AS the weekly darts results come through, we generally look for the odd surprise win or surprise defeat.
Sometimes, though, we don’t realise what has happened until we actually see all those results down on paper. (yes, we still use paper, Mr. Editor). Only then can we see exactly what this fantastic darts league is all about. If it’s competition you’re after, then look no further. Of the 14 matches played across the two
divisions last Friday, 12 of them were settled with the very last dart! And it was such an important dart for Gaffers because they took the trebles to beat Sandys International to remain top of the Division 1 pile. Just! But there’s a bit of a queue building up behind them in the shape of Pas O Nadas A, who are in great form. A 6-2 success over Boothen puts them level on points at the summit. If there was one surprise result, it came at Spear Chuckers, who also took the trebles leg to inflict a first

defeat on the Scruffy Macs dream team. Elsewhere, The Pub beat Phoenix for the second week in a row, despite a first 180 from London, and there were draws at Palms Sports Bar and Sandys Reborn. A quick glance at the Division 2 table tells you all you need to know about competition. A mere five points separates the top seven teams in what
promises to be a fiercely-contested title race. And none of the topthree teams actually tasted victory! Sundowners lost the trebles to tie at Rood, Picassos lost the trebles and the match against Clouseaus, while Marilyns B came unstuck at home to The Tavern. That gave Emerald Lounge the chance to narrow the gap a little, and they duly obliged

Top coach is arrested by anti-doping police JAMA Aden, athletics’ highly-regarded international middle-distance coach, has been arrested in connection with a doping investigation in Spain.
Police arrested the Somalian coach as part of Operación de los Mossos, in collaboration with the Spanish antidoping agency (AEPSAD), on Monday. He was staying at a Sabadell hotel, 20km north of Barcelona, and
a physiotherapist at the hotel was also held. It is understood that EPO (Erythropoietin), a protein hormone which enhances oxygen-carrying capacity, was found in one of the rooms. Aden coaches Ethiopia’s 1500m world-record-holder Genzebe Dibaba, and he also works with Ayanleh Soulemain, of Djibouti. Another big name he used to coach was Taouifk Makhloufi, Algeria’s reigning 1500m world champion. Earlier this year, Dibaba, Souleiman and Abdalelah Haroun -
another Aden-trained athlete - broke indoor world records in Stockholm in the mile, 1km and 500m. None of those athletes has ever failed a drugs test.

By Adi Benson FIRSTLY, congratulations to Iceland. They have only a small pool from which to pick players. But they’ve shown that if your team play with passion, pride, commitment, desire and heart, you get results.
Plus, their plan of investing heavily in youth development some 12 years ago has paid off in dividends. Now, as the dust settles on another shambolic tournament for England, the FA have a very important decision to make regarding the future of English football. We do not want to be lumbered with another dinosaur of a manager; we need a young hungry coach, but who, at a young age, wants an international job? Gareth Southgate was the early favourite with bookies, and it makes some sense because he has had a good spell as England Under-21 coach. He knows the younger players and is well placed to decide who

What a joke!
could make the step up to the senior team … and youth is what we need to concentrate on. Trouble is, he has made it clear that he doesn’t want to succeed Roy Hodgson, and he’s not that interested in a care-taker role, while officials hunt for a new full-time manager. And Chief Executive Martin Glenn claiming, publicly, that Southgate would be “a pretty obvious stop-gap” would hardly have endeared him to the job. Too many senior players let England down at Euro 2016 after a perfect qualification run. There will be cries that the players are tired, they are overpaid, they don’t want to wear the shirt! I don’t subscribe to those notions because to me, it’s simple. The coaching was poor, preparation for the matches was poor, tactics were poor … and the players were simply not good enough. They looked clueless, and that was down to the set-up, the coaching - and the manager! Look at the smaller nations (I mean no malice in that description): Iceland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Republic of Ireland. They are organised, their managers have found a system
that suits, they have identified the players who can play that system and they execute it well. Their success in this tournament is not down to chance or luck, but down to playing well as a team, being organised and well-coached. With regards to the players, keeper Joe Hart needs time on the bench and if it were up to me, Fraser Forster starts for the World Cup qualifiers. Gary Cahill needs to
hang up his boots John Stones is waiting and, should he remain at Everton, he will improve massively under Ronald Koeman. Walker, Rose, Clyne and Bertrand are not bad full-backs and they could benefit under Southgate, who would improve their defensive play. Eric Dier did well in the groups and will be a decent defensive midfielder over the next few years. But the team don’t always need one. I don’t think the Rooney experiment worked. Yes, he had good games against Russia and Wales, but he was poor against Slovakia and even worse against Iceland A midfielder needs a bit of everything, and not just a 30-yard, cross-field pass to a full-back. Go with dignity, Wayne, and retire from international football!
Delli Alli is a great player, but he faded as the tournament progressed, and he needs to bulk up a little. Adam Lallana had a decent-enough tournament, but was poor in front of goal. He works hard, but his end-product needs to improve. Sterling was slated for the first two group games, and rightly so, but he was short of game-time last season, I’m not sure that will improve under Pep Guardiola. He is being used as a scapegoat after the Iceland game, but there were at least four players worse than he was, including the captain! Yes, Kane was Golden Boot winner in the Premier League, but he is not yet an international striker. His dead-ball delivery is woeful, and he just didn’t show enough. Vardy is not international class, full stop! One good season
doesn’t mean you can make that step-up. At times, Sturridge looks disinterested, but is still probably the best option we have right now. Rashford did well with the minutes he got, and was our best player against Iceland. He actually looked as though he wanted to influence the game, but I fear for him under Mourinho next season because it’s well-documented that Jose rarely plays youth. The FA need to get a new manager in quickly because the World Cup qualifiers begin in September. Let’s hope they make a bold decision as there is a huge amount of room for improvement. Here’s a look at the runners and riders in the frame: Gareth Southgate: Despite his misgivings,it makes sense. He has worked within the FA set-up and knows the personnel well. He has also worked closely with the younger players and is well-positioned to bring them through to the senior side. Alan Pardew: Has never excelled at club level, and I can’t see how he could improve the team, or the current crop of players. Eddie Howe: Definitely one for the future, but he won’t take the job now as he looks forward to another Premier League season with Bournemouth. Brendan Rodgers: Has just taken the Celtic job, and I can’t see him backtracking. Gary Neville: Has just resigned as an England coach, and I can’t see him being bought back into the fold that quickly. And his Valencia spell didn’t end well. Sam Allardyce: No. Just No! Glenn Hoddle: Have the bookies lost their minds? Jurgen Klinsmann: Has managed at international level and has a wealth of experience. An outside possibility. David Cameron: Well, he is looking for a job! Michael O’Neill: The editor’s choice And if anybody is shouting out Harry Redknapp’s name, shut up! It would be a huge step backwards…
