GOTCHA! VILLAINS’ DOUBLE TROUBLE

A CONVICTED rapist, on the run in Tenerife from British police for more than six years, and featured on a Most Wanted list, was finally arrested in a Las Americas restaurant on Monday, thanks to Crimestoppers’ Operation Captura campaign. And another fugitive was also hunted down last week in Spain. Continued on Page 3

Fugitives, keep well away! Continued from Front Mohammed Alam, 33, was convicted and jailed for 14 years in 2010, in his absence, for a sex attack in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Detectives believed he could be in Spain, or even his native Bangladesh, after he had returned to the UK on a temporary visa in 2007. In May, Alam was said to be living in Arona, and, following a five-month probe, he was eventually unmasked by Tenerife’s Organised Crime Group. Officers followed a trail of disguises, and his constant switching of homes and workplaces, before pouncing on him at a Las Americas restaurant. He is now in custody, awaiting extradition to the UK. It followed last week’s arrest in Spain of suspected paedophile

Matthew Sammon, just hours after pictures of all remaining desperados at large yet to be hunted down had been published. Of the 96 fugitives pictured over a magnificent decade of being hunted down, just 18 remain free following the latest arrests. Alam had been on Crimestoppers’ Most Wanted list for a year, and his photograph was among those circulated last week. Gloucestershire Detective Sergeant Paul Howell, said: “We hope this result shows criminals that they will be convicted, even if they try to get away and escape under the radar.” The general public were urged to study the comprehensive list, and the move turned up trumps because it led

to a double success for Operation Captura. Within hours, Britain’s Matthew Sammon, a suspected paedophile featured on the current list, was nabbed in Spain after a tip-off from Sky News. Sammon, wanted in London on suspicion of downloading indecent images of children, will also be extradited to the UK. Lord Ashcroft KCMG, founder and chairman of Crimestoppers, said: “To have secured a second arrest in the space of a few days, following last week’s appeal and arrest of Sammon, is a tremendous result.” And Steve Reynolds, of the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), which operates in partnership with Crimestoppers and Spanish police, added: “Locating and

arresting Alam, after he had been on the run for so long, is a fantastic result, as was the capture of Sammon. “This was a team effort to get justice for their victims, and they will be returned to the UK as soon as possible.” Sammon was arrested in Costa del Sol after Spanish police surrounded his camper van in the Fuengirola holiday resort last Wednesday. The 45-year-old, wanted for being in possession of indecent images of children, is understood to have been hiding out in the area for almost two years. In fact, a ferry ticket from County Cork, Ireland, to the Roscoff port in northern France, was discovered in his camper van, confirming that period. In the

late-night raid, two undercover policeman stormed the former Croydon resident’s mobile home as the Surrey man returned from walking his dog. His former boss Daniel Reid, 40, a Blackpool plasterer who now lives in Spain, put the boot in for him after Crimestoppers had launched its latest Operation Captura - a joint operation between UK and Spanish cops to hunt down the mostwanted British criminals, thought to be hiding out in Spain. “As soon as I saw his face among the ‘most wanted’, I felt sick,” said Mr Reid, who had employed Sammon for six months earlier this year. “I let him hang around my children. “We took him in with open arms and, at first,

were none the wiser. But we always thought he was a bit weird. He’s a real loner and never talked about his family. He creeped me and my family out so much that I fired him.” Following the double arrests, National Crime Agency director Steve Reynolds praised Operation Captura appeal’s success. “It’s absolutely fantastic that, within hours of launching the appeal, we made an arrest - and then another one soon afterwards,” he said. “We know these fugitives hide among expats living in Spain, which is why we have tried so hard to get their faces out there. “Thanks to the expat community for tipping us off, this is the reason we run these campaigns.”

Giant aquarium planned for Las Torres

Catch of the day! By Colin Kirby EUROPE’S largest aquarium, set to be Adeje’s latest major leisure attraction, will feature 10,000 fish of all shapes and sizes, in 70 tanks, covering 950 species, on a new development at the Las Torres plot. The area, once used by Tropicana and now derelict, has been at the centre of a tug-ofwar involving various companies’ ambitious projects. Aquarium owner Hai Re SL, which plans to display freshwater fish, as well as those from the ocean, has even seen off invading dinosaurs - part of a now-extinct

Jurapark proposal and is expecting all parties to sign the legal permissions within days. After much negotiation, Hai Re SL is confident it can satisfy the Canarian Government about the environmental impact to secure the licence needed to start basic construction, which alone will cost some 20-million euros. Construction work would then start early next year with the aquarium opening in early 2018. There will be careful scrutiny of the land because it is in a protected area, Teno Rasca Natura 2000. It will be the first

protected area in Spain to be administered by a business group, Hai Re SL if the Asian company’s bid succeeds. Once open, it will be all about the fish - no sea mammals or birds -

housed in salt and fresh water tanks. The range of fish will give visitors a chance to see many species they would never get to appreciate in the wild and to learn about their part in the world environment.

Locally, the development will create many jobs. At the construction phase, there will be 200 direct jobs followed by 46 once it opens. A further 30 jobs would be created indirectly through the service and

tourism industry. The aquarium would only take up half of the 38,000 square metre land site, and several large shopping groups have been mentioned as possible neighbours, including a few of the popular stores around Santa Cruz. The big plan for the area is for the company to enhance the tourism value, and benefit the local community and economy. Money for the aquarium’s basic construction, raised from private sources, is scheduled to be built within 15 months, and is expected to be operating some time in 2018.

Rajoy on the verge of regaining power

SPAIN looks certain to have a government in the next week or so, following a 10-month political impasse. It follows Sunday’s decision by the PSOE (Socialist Party) to lift a veto which has blocked the Popular Party (PP) in Congress.

The PSOE has decided that its MPs will abstain from a confidence vote tomorrow (Saturday) for acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, which will allow him to form a new government. But Rajoy knows he will return to office at the head of a minority administration, and will rule without the support of Spain’s three other main parties, with just 137 members out of 350. He will be forced to negotiate every step of the new legislature, seeking support from the emerging centre-right Ciudadanos party, and

other groups as well. But at least the decision avoids Spaniards returning to the polls for a record third time in a year - to their relief no doubt. All that is required now is a meeting between Rajoy and King Felipe VI, and then two rounds of voting in Congress, at which the Socialist Party will definitely abstain. That will enable Rajoy to form a minority government toward the end of next week. Javier Fernández, in charge of the PSOE until it elects a new leader, has described the party’s position as “the lesser of two evils” because Rajoy is definitely not the flavour overall and it is, virtually, a needs-must move. The Socialist Party’s decision to lift its veto came after a special meeting held in Madrid on Sunday, with 139 regional leaders voting to allow Rajoy to form a government, and 96 opposing the move. The question had divided the party, with former PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez insisting for the last 10 months that he had widespread

support among the grass-roots for his refusal to allow Rajoy back into office. But he stood down on 31st August. In the first round of voting in Congress next week, Rajoy will likely garner 170 votes: the PP’s, along with those of Ciudadanos and the Canaries Coalition. A second vote will take place two days later, on Saturday or Sunday. The Socialists will abstain, thus opening the door for Rajoy to return to office. Socialist voters were evenly divided between those whose priority was stopping acting PM Rajoy from returning to office, and those whose main motivation was to avoid another election. A Metroscopia poll for Spanish daily EL PAÍS showed that 49% of Socialist Party (PSOE) voters believed it was paramount to stop Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) from forming a government. But 47% of PSOE voters felt a

third election had to be avoided at all costs, even if meant the party voting against Rajoy. Had this happened, it would have prolonged Spain’s 10-month stalemate until Monday, when the political calendar mandated that the King would have to dissolve parliament and call new elections for late December. However, when asked what was better for the party itself, 56% of PSOE voters answered: “Avoiding an election.” This was because polls forecast that a third election would favour R a joy’s P P,

which stood to gain as much as 5% support from the 26th June election, while the PSOE would have lost votes. Taking all voters i n t o

account, 66% of the party’s voters said they would rather avoid new elections. This view held true for supporters of the PP, the PSOE and Ciudadanos, but not of the Podemos party, in which 60% of voters preferred a new election.

Pupils strike over changes to exams

LOS Cristianos was at the forefront of national student anger on Wednesday over education reforms that put extra pressure and limitations on them - at the most vital time of their studies. Protests took place all across Spain, with La Laguna and Los Cristianos the Tenerife rallying points. Villain of the piece is LOMCE, or Werts Law. In the past, students have been judged on a series of exams through their final stages of schooling - ESO for those aged 15 and16, and bachillerato for 18-year-olds. Two years ago, sweeping reforms changed the system, and they are judged

on one final exam. This leaves little room for mistakes, illness, or just having an off-day. It could prevent them from moving up to the next rung of education, and also restrict their

job prospects. Students’ group CEAPA organised the national protests, but, with just La Laguna representing Tenerife, youngsters Jade Newman and Sonia Salvador, from IES

Ichasagua, organised the southern focal point. There was a good spread of schools converging on Los Cristianos church plaza, with representatives

from Adeje, El Medano, and beyond. The strike and protest meeting, which needed official approved by police officers, was eventually given the nod after Jade and Sonia bombarded them with constant requests. Hopefully, if enough students protest - one million signatures collected so far throughout Spain - they may be

able to force a reforms’ U-turn. The Los Cristianos protest was well-organised, extremely vocal, and ensured the students’ message came over loud and clear. The schoolchildren demonstrated that young minds are not just enquiring; they’re also ready to stand up for the things which affect their future.

Canary Islands shame with domestic-violence figures THE Canary Islands had more victims of domestic violence among autonomous communities in the second quarter of the year.

Some 22.5 women per 10,000 were said to have been abused, according to new data, released by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). In all, Canarian courts registered 2,422 complaints of domestic violence in this period, of which 2,388 women were affected, while 472 protection orders were issued. Throughout the country, Spanish courts received 36,319 domestic-violence complaints, which was an increase of 13.4%. In the same period, the percentage of convicted batterers, which accounted for 64.4% of all sentences imposed, also rose two points. They also saw an

increase of more than three points in requests for protection orders and those granted by the courts. It also highlighted significant increases in the number of measures taken, legally, for the greater protection of minors. The stats show that a total of 33,593 women were victims of gender violence in all complaints in the second quarter.

This figure represents an 8.8% increase against last year’s second quarter of women victims, who totalled 30,869. Nearly 70% of complaints were lodged by the victim, directly in court or through police reports. Complaints by direct police intervention accounted for 16.48% of the cases. There has also been a slight percentage increase over the

Bulls face 4x4 terror AN appalling bullfighting craze in Spain, featuring 4x4 vehicles, has been criticised heavily by animal rights group called PACMA.

The Spanish political party released footage of 4x4 drivers chasing after bulls before spearing them out of the windows of the car. In one clip, a bull is shot in the head after being taunted by a number of drivers, who surround the poor animal. The group says the pop-up events, known as “encierros” (enclosures) violate bullfighting regulations. According to the regulations by the local government of CastillaLa Mancha, where some of the events are believed to have been filmed, participants are banned from being drunk, or ‘carrying bottles, glasses or any instrument with

can cause illtreatment of cattle’. “We need to show people that the Toro de la Vega is not the only sickening bullchase in this country,” said PACMA President Silvia Barquero. “There are more than 100 of these cruel car rallies in Guadalajara province alone. Yet those taking part are blatantly breaking the law.” The Toro de la Vega is the most gruesome of annual medieval festivals, held in the town of Tordesillas, in

Valladolid. A lone bull is chased by hundreds of lancers after being released on to the streets and, should it somehow escape death, it is “pardoned”. Mrs Barquero added: “Many people are drinking, but, under Spanish law, people are not allowed to take part in an encierro if they are under the affects of alcohol or drugs. “The Guardia Civil are normally present, but they don’t appear to enforce the law.”

previous year regarding complaints filed by the victims’ relatives. During the second quarter, 10,845 protection orders were requested in the various courts around the country. A total of 9,587 orders of protection (including protection and safety of victims) were applied in the courts of violence against women, and another 1,258 in police courts.

The non-stop, 24-hour Atalaya trail of torture LA LAGUNA’S Tejina Square will soon vibrate with the sound of gutsy mountainrunners this Saturday (29th Oct) as the 24hour, Non-Stop, Atalaya Trail gets cracking.

For the second successive year, Lechutraiel and Guajara Aventura launch the severest of tests, in collaboration with the City of La Laguna and its Sports Councillor, Agustin Hernandez. Event organiser José Delgado emphasised: “This is is a test, not only of raw physical strength, but, above all, the mastery of your head, which is always a personal challenge to overcome.” Hernandez highlighted “the strong commitment of the City of La Laguna’s government team to promote endurance sports and adventure”. Runners will depart from Tejina Square, climb to the Watchtower

by Tejinetilla, and drop back down towards the Plaza de Tejina. It’s non-stop for an astonishing 24 hours, over a distance of some 18.6km. The Non-Stop Trail has two modes: teams of four runners (male, female or mixed) and individual - masculine and feminine - trailrunners. The endurance test begins at Noon tomorrow (Saturday) and ends at the same time on Sunday. But, as a result of the time change, it will also add an extra hour to the race. This afternoon (Friday) will be devoted to smaller activities and a music show. And, subsequently, the square will be filled with competitors’ tents. The trail run will be followed by an awards ceremony - and a superb paella dish for all entrants.

Sightseeing tours such a city bonus

Bare facts, about a nudist eaterie! FOOD in the nude has already left sleepy San Isidro all aflutter … because the town will be home to Spain’s first all-naked eaterie from next January.

Italian Tony de Leonardis has christened his new venture Innato Tenerife (Natural Tenerife), and it’s not just the clothing that will be stripped down to basics. His idea is to get away from the trappings of the modern world, so there will be no mobiles at the tables, which will be candle-lit, and the food and drink will be organic. An all-in price of 70 euros will cover organic meat, fish, and vegetables, and there’s even organic sangria. Don´t get worked up at the thought of

diners comparing more than just the food, though, because there will be private tables. The sight of a good meal can do wonders for the appetites - and even more so with the special, aphrodisiac menu. Tony has been inspired by The Bunyadi restaurant in London’s Elephant & Castle, which opened in June and quickly built up a waiting list of 37,000 customers. Your minds (and pulses) will no doubt be racing already as obvious questions pop up. Where do you keep your small change? What about crumbs? Is unfolding a napkin seen as casual dressing? If the Tenerife experience matches the London success, it could lead to burgers in the buff, potatoes without jackets … and some very perky puddings!

Transvestite’s deadly tumble A MAN, believed to be a transvestite, died on Sunday morning after falling from the third floor of a building to a courtyard in Santa Cruz. He was said to have been fleeing from an alleged “client”, who threatened him menacingly and was, subsequently, detained by the National Police. The incident occurred at 5am in a housing block on Alvaro Rodriguez Lopez street. Official sources said the victim panicked as he attempted to escape

and toppled into the courtyard. Some of his neighbours called the 112 emergency services after hearing his screams. The victim, who was seriously injured, was taken to the emergency department of La Candelaria hospital, where doctors tried, unsuccessfully, to save him. A national off-duty policeman, near the area at the time, learned what had happened and warned his National Police colleagues, which led to the assailant’s arrest.

SANTA Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez has welcomed this week’s National Convention of Spain’s City Sightseeing tours in the capital, which ends today (Friday).

During the week, along with directors of the Spanish company and various associates, he was involved in corporate meetings and familiarisation seminars around the island. Bermudez was also accompanied by Enrique Ybarra, President and CEO of City Sightseeing, and Alfonso Cabello, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Economic Development,. “The choice of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for the annual 2016 convention was based on the prominent role of City Sightseeing’s multi-national tours throughout Spain,” said the Mayor. “For this reason, we have also been chosen for City Sightseeing’s 2019 International Convention. And they are always held in major cities, where the company’s tours are exemplary.”

In the past six years, City Sightseeing in Santa Cruz has boosted local tourism through its daily tours, with 11 stops throughout the city. It creates new products, promotes the destination in the rest of the Island and at major trade shows. And it also generates direct and indirect employment. City Sightseeing connects the main tourist areas in Santa Cruz via its bus, which has a hop-on, hop-off system. Travellers can hop on and off as many times as they wish at the different stops to see favourite attractions. It

means there is no great concentration of these particular tourists in a single area. Meanwhile, Alfonso Cabello said: “Through synergies with other companies, City Sightseeing Santa Cruz de Tenerife contributes to visits in these tourist attractions. It also enriches local tourism by enabling travellers to enjoy their stay.” He added: “Included in the ticket, among the benefits, are the entrance to Palmetum, the Museum of Nature and Man, the tour of the Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín, a walking tour of the city and a visit Las Teresitas

beach.” To encourage visits from other tourist areas of the island, City Sightseeing also includes a round-trip ticket with the TITSA service, from Adeje and Los Cristianos bus stations in the South, and from Puerto de la Cruz. Cabello added: “The revitalising City Sightseeing tour in Santa Cruz has generated 22 jobs, of which 15 are indefinite. “Between 2011 and 2015, 338,286 people used the tourist bus, and people are now waiting to help exceed the figure of 400,000 passengers.”

Why ‘Visit Britain’ when it’s so costly? JUST as Tenerife has announced record tourism figures, and predicts an on-going upward trend (not even a bit of rain keeps anyone away), it seems that Britain is not so great at promoting herself to increase visitors. Currently, tourism is the UK’s fourth-largest employer, and the economy’s sixth-largest export earner. Around 10% of Britons work in tourism and, during the last Parliament, it accounted for one in every three jobs created. So it’s a puzzle as to why politicians insist on regarding tourism as a Cinderella industry? George Osborne, when Chancellor, loved to be filmed on a building site, wearing a hard hat and high-vis jacket. But he was less frequently shown in a hotel, pub or restaurant, at the seaside, a dogtrack, a racecourse or at any of Britain’s great visitor attractions. Unfortunately, his attitude typifies how politicians see tourism as, somehow, inferior to sectors such as manufacturing, construction, financial services and even retail. The budget for Visit Britain, the Government agency which promotes inward-bound tourism, has been continually cut. And now, it scrapes along on much less than equivalent bodies in the United States, France and Spain. Australia, in fact, a country with a population less than half that of Britain, spends more than twice as much promoting itself

as a tourist destination. Part of the problem is that there is not even a tourism minister in the UK. Somehow, it comes under the remit of the Parliamentary Under Secretary for Sport, Tourism and Heritage. And that’s crazy for a sector employing 2.4 million people and, annually, brings £17.7bn of export earnings into the UK. Britain is also not helped by being one of the most expensive places to visit worldwide, The British Hospitality Association, the main industry body, notes that the UK is the 138th out of 140 countries for price competitiveness. This is largely because VAT on UK tourism is 20% - almost twice the EU average. A campaign to cut tourism VAT to 5% is being waged, but it is likely to meet short shrift from ministers. They will use the recent drop in the Pound as having raised competitiveness, excusing them from further action. Ultimately, with Brexit and global markets, tourism will be more important to Britain than ever, so take some advice from a small group of islands in the Atlantic: use your best features to promote yourselves. And spend some money doing it … you can’t rely on the exchange rate!

Big blow-up over wind farms’ steel S C O T T I S H Power, owned by Spanish giant Iberdrola, has sparked huge political unrest by awarding Spain a 165m-euro deal to build steel parts for Britain’s taxpayer-funded wind farms.

Iberdrola is a public, multi-national electric utility company and the lucrative contract has gone to a shipyard

owned by the Spanish Government. The decision has caused a crisis at the Newcastle-based OGN Group, which had high hopes of securing the investment - and 2,000 jobs! And critics says the decision is opposed, directly, to the UK Government’s strategy of supporting British jobs. Mary Glindon, Labour MP for North Tyneside, said: “If the Government wants to ensure work comes to British workers, it has

to take a stronger line with these companies. “Why should the British taxpayer give money to support companies unless there’s some material benefit to the UK? It’s not international aid it’s business.” Scottish Power will receive millions in taxpayer-funded subsidies throughout the 15-year project, which will also lead to a new wind farm in East Anglia. Now, though, OGN officials are asking the Government to deliver

on its promise to support British business and the Northern Powerhouse. Scottish Power said it awarded the contract based on Spanish company Navantia’s technical and economic competitiveness. A spokesman added: “We are working with a range of UK suppliers, and supporting major investment in UK infrastructure. “It is not possible to award contracts to every UK company which tenders, especially if bids for contracts are not competitive.”

Social Security hit by 4m-euro fraud NATIONAL Police officers have arrested 15 people for their alleged involvement in a mammoth Social Security fraud in Spain, amounting to nearly four million euros. Four other people, relating to the fraud, have also been investigated, while nine companies in Lugo, a city in Galacia, ranging

from hairdressing to metalwork, are under investigation for a total of 18 crimes. The investigations began several months ago when Lugo’s Provincial Treasury officers detected a large number of companies, with activities in various sectors, which had, apparently, accumulated large Social Security debts.

These firms all had several hallmarks connected to fraudster companies. And, after digging deeper, the officers found they all had the same, fraudulent, commercial trait. As the probe advanced and after careful scrutiny of all the documentation and information, the

police determined which companies could have been defrauding the Social Security fund. The National Police, in total, uncovered eight fraud offences, a corporate crime, a crime-documentary forgery and a case of criminal organisation, totalling more than 3,850,000 euros.

X Files exposed in the Canaries UFOs, flying saucers, or space invaders - the Spanish term is OVNIs. And even General Franco´s regime believed there might be something out there. Now, Spanish defence files have been made declassified, with our Islands identified as a hot spot. Between 1974 and 1992, there were 27 reported cases, which are covered in 80 reports and over 1,900 pages in the dossier. Some of the more famous incidents have been debunked in the files, including the El Medano and Los Cristianos sightings, as well as a separate case around Galdar and Agaete, in Gran Canaria, both from 1976. These suspected visits involved bright circles of light, seen from prolonged bursts in the sky. The report puts these down to American submarine-testing of Poseidon missiles because there have been frequent military exercises in and around Canarian territory over the years. One of the most reliable sources came from the crew of a Spantax airline plane, flying between Tenerife and Gran Canaria in 1968. They reported a bright object, zig-zagging across the sky for 45 seconds. Similar incidents to this one are simply left as unexplained. And even though the official reports finished in 1992, there have been plenty more cases since then. The latest was a UFO sighting over Callao Salvaje in March this year, when six witnesses insist they saw a strange, unnatural object moving in an unusual way.

That’s what you call a shady deal

MORE than 245,000 pairs of fake sunglasses, imported from Asia and featuring a famous brand, have been seized in Madrid,.

The National Police, along with the tax authorities, have arrested a Chinese man, allegedly responsible for importing and distributing the imitations, from four locations in Madrid’s Cobo Calleja Fuenlabrada industrial park. The operation, called “Vision”, began after the Spanish police received information from officers in France on the seizure of counterfeits carried out in that country. They discovered 75,000 pairs of sunglasses at Charles de Gaulle Airport, bound for a company based in Fuenlabrada, Madrid. A sample has been sent to a specialised laboratory to test their levels of protection, and if they could be harmful to the users’ health.

Horrific family murder: Young nephew arrested THE main suspect in the gruesome murder of a family in Guadalajara, turned himself over to police in Brazil - to where he fled and arrived back in Spain last Wednesday.

Francois Patrick Nogueira Gouveira, 19, has been connected to the horrific murder of his aunt and uncle, plus their two young children, whose dismembered bodies were found in plastic

rubbish bags at their rented home in Pioz, 40 miles from Madrid, on 18th September. The appalling discovery came after neighbours alerted police to a “terrible stench” emanating from the property. The Guardia Civil later revealed that they had “a lot of reasonable evidence and clear proof” that the youngster was responsible for the deaths of Marcos Campos Nogueira and his wife Janaina Santos Americo, both 30, and their sons, aged four and one. Jobless Nogueira

Gouveira lived with the family in Torrejon de Ardoz, near Madrid, for four months before they all moved to Pioz. Investigators initially suspected that the victims were involved in a drug deal that went wrong. But DNA and fingerprint evidence implicated the young man, and there were no signs of forced entry to the house. Mobile phone records also place the suspect at the scene on 17th August, the last day his uncle was seen alive, while CCTV footage shows a young man entering the gated community where the

family lived at 3am that day. Information gleaned from Nogueira Gouveira’s bus-pass revealed that he travelled to Guadalajara on 17th August and returned the following day. He also had a plane ticket to Brazil booked for November, but he changed the date a day after the bodies were unearthed, flying out of Spain on 19th September. When questioned initially by Brazilian police, he claimed he’d never been to the Pioz house and that he had fled Spain because he was scared that he

“would be next”. But he later changed his story, telling his lawyer that the physical evidence resulted from him having lived with his relatives. Spanish authorities had asked for him to be extradited after issuing an international arrest warrant. Brazil refused, but he has returned voluntarily after “conversations” with his legal representative. He is said to suffer from “egotism” and “narcissism” and has a violent history, with a criminal record for attacking a teacher three years ago.

Spanish restaurant voted best in world TRIPADVISOR, the travel reviews’ company, has revealed its Travellers’ Choice Restaurants winners for 2016.

And while there were strong contenders from France and Spain, UK restaurants clinched three of the top 10 positions. Top of the fine-dining pile was Spain’s Martin Berasategui, a threeMichelin-starred restaurant in Lasarte, just outside of San Sebastian, which was named after its head chef. The renowned chef has won the title for the second year running, thanks to his take on modern Spanish cuisine. On his tasting menus, you could discover dishes such as red mullet with edible scale crystals; fennel with saffron-

and-liquid baby squid bonbon, and young pigeon, charcoal-roasted at a low temperature, with potato-and-truffle bites and forgotten vegetables. In the nearby town of Larrabetzu, another three-Michelin-starred restaurant, Azurmendi, was voted No.10. The gourmet restau-

Royal tapestry factory Adeje’s safety-first weaves safety pattern Red Cross courses MADRID’S centuriesold Royal Tapestry Factory has been saved from bankruptcy, thanks to a onemillion-euro funding of public money, a debtrestructuring plan - and its biggest order in 200 years! The 296-year-old factory struggled badly when the market for hand-woven tapestries and rugs plummeted during Spain’s financial crisis. Yet its tapestries and rugs can be seen in every palace of the Spanish Crown, including the Royal Palace, the Palace of El Pardo, Aranjuez Palace and the Riofrio Palace. King Felipe V founded the factory initially to make palaces in Spain more comfortable. “It was now or never,” said Maria Pardo, a Madrid City Council official who announced, along with the regional government and the Ministry of Culture, an increase in annual subsidies to 1.5m euros next year from 900,000 euros.

The factory, which restores historical pieces, as well as taking on fresh work, hardly received any public money before 2015. But the cash has at least enabled the factory to pay delayed wages. A restructuring of bank debt and a focus on international sales have also helped its revival. To handle new orders,

the now-prospering business, which has almost doubled its staff to 60, holds a priceless collection of tapestry templates by Spanish artists, including Francisco de Goya. And Germany’s regional government of Saxony has recently commissioned 32 tapestries, which is the factory’s biggest order over the last two centuries.

ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Red Cross (Cruz Roja) Provincial President Carlos Piñero Coello, have signed an agreement for specialised courses to be held in the town. They will cover security, health, lifeguard training, as well as other environmental and social-related areas. The courses start immediately in the Adeje Escuela de Seguridad y Convivencia (Security

and Social Harmony). The initial classes will involve training for vital support in health matters, and the use of a defibrillator. Other courses, scheduled to start in November, include training for crisis management, a course for would-be lifeguards, and official instruction in handling food for those planning to work in restaurants and hotel kitchens, or other food-preparation centres.

Adeje Council will also supply personnel and materials to assist in setting up the courses for residents, in collaboration with the Cruz Roja, a body with extensive experience in the field. Those interested in signing up for any of the courses can contact the school, located in Las Nieves. Spain must make cuts of 5bn euros BRUSSELS has called for the incoming government to approve a new budget “as soon as possible”, including cuts of some 5.5bn euros, following the prospect of Mariano Rajoy’s second term in office.

The proposed cuts are equivalent to 0.5% of GDP, and the EU’s missive will come as no surprise to Rajoy’s PP party. The European Commission has told Spain, along with seven other EU members, that its 2017 budget doesn’t meet the country’s commitments. In a letter sent on Tuesday, Brussels warned that next year’s deficit goals were not “assured,” adding: “There are risks to the necessary and tough correction

of the excessive deficit between now and 2018,” by which time another 5.5bn will need to be cut. Member states of the EU sent their budget proposals to the Commission on 15th October. It responded by again including Spain among those, it says, at risk of not meeting their objectives. Tuesday’s letter accepts that “an interim government doesn’t have full budgetary powers”. But it still urges Spain to come up with a new budget “as soon as possible,” which means before the end of the year. Spain was forced to roll over its 2016 budget plan instead of presenting a new one for 2017, putting it on course to overshoot next year’s deficit target set by Brussels. It is expected to come in at 3.6% of national output, missing the 3.1% deficit goal. The gap implies that savings worth 0.5% of GDP will

be needed to get the deficit back on track. And that requires an agreement, between the new government and the opposition, on cuts or reforms to improve waning tax and social security revenues. Last year, Brussels warned Spain of a “serious risk” that it wouldn’t meet its commitments. It prompted a defiant response from Spain’s Finance Minister, Cristóbal Montero, who said: “Spain’s economy is growing fastest and, of course, it will meet its commitments.” Economy Minister Luis de Guindos added: “We always end up meeting our commitments.” De Guindos has since had to apologise: he promised that the deficit for 2016 would be “below 3%”, a figure he now puts at around 4.6%, and which may rise. Successive failures to meet its deficit targets nearly saw Spain fined.

The gradual shift towards less harsh monetary policy began in 2015, although Brussels insists in public that rules are rules, even if nobody plays by them. The eurozone is definitely not in the midst of an increase in government spending, but neither is it in the grip of austerity. Germany has approved tax reductions, yet Brussels looks the other way when France takes unilateral measures. Nobody is going to tell Italy what to do, and Spain is finally emerging from years of austerity: when Rajoy took his foot off the brake in the run-up to the June elections, there were no consequences. But the Commission’s letter is still a warning, and, particularly to Spain. After Greece, it still has the highest unemployment - and the largest deficit in the EU!

Shearwater chicks to prepare for sea flight ADEJE Council is once again contributing to the campaign for the conservation and protection of the Cory’s shearwater chicks.

They will be soon be making their first seaward flights, says Environment Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas. The campaign begins this week and runs until 15th November, and the public, as well as authorities, can help out. You can minimise the impact of artificial light in the night sky because this can disorient the chicks and, possibly, provoke falls. The most likely firstflight nights will be between tomorrow (Saturday) and Tuesday (1st Nov), given the current lunar cycles.

This Council initiative is undertaken in partnership with the Cabildo, the centre for the recuperation of fauna, the 112 emergency services and the council boroughs where these birds are known to nest and live. “We are asking for residents to collaborate with us in this campaign and let us know if they spot chicks that have obviously lost their way, or fallen in flight, by phoning 112, who will activate the volunteer

personnel to collect the chicks”, said Cllr Vargas. “The centre for the recuperation of

fauna will also take calls on 922 445 777. The volunteer teams are easily identifiable and carry a card with Tenerife Cabildo authorisation.” If you do need to report an incident, call 112 or 922 445 777 and give exact information on the location of the chick so that it can be found easily. If you feel able to collect the bird yourself - if there is a need to before the authorities arrive - you should wear gloves, cover the bird with a towel or piece of fabric without frightening the creature, place it in a box with breathing holes and leave it in a quiet place until they arrive. Never try to lock the wings in place along the bird’s back. And DON’T feed the chick or give it anything to drink!

Yellow Canaries, and white Teide THE State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) extended its yellow alert (extreme weather on way) throughout the week from its original Monday and Tuesday warning as the Canary

Islands became awash on Wednesday and early yesterday (Thursday). But Mount Teidewatchers weren’t all that bothered because the old lady, in all her splendour, was wearing that white cape again!

Spain’s healthy jobless figures FOR the first time in six years Spain’s unemployment rate has fallen below 20%, according to yesterday’s National Statistics Institute. In the third quarter of 2016, Spain’s unemployment rate fell to 18.91%. In real numbers, this means that in a country of 46 million people, around 18.5 million were actively employed, around 4.3 million unemployed and the rest were inactive. Before the financial crisis hit in 2007, Spain’s unemployment rate was hovering

at around 8%. However, the crisis devastated Spain’s banking and construction industries. And unemployment rocketed to a historic high of nearly 27% by the beginning of 2013. Now, though Spain is overcoming its highest and most persistent jobless levels in the last 40 years. Yet it still suffers from the second-highest unemployment levels in the European Union, after Greece. According to Eurostat, the average EU unemployment rate was 8.6% in August.

Rajoy: we’re facing a tough road ahead MARIANO Rajoy has warned of Spain’s tough road ahead as he prepares to take power again, at the head of a minority government with little support. In Wednesday’s speech to parliament, he promised to be “open to dialogue” as he acknowledged his government would have to negotiate “every day”. He added: “I don’t know what difficulties will emerge in the path of the future government, but no doubt they will be many, and big.

“But the PP are willing to confront them and put up with sacrifices that may be necessary.” Until last weekend, Spain was heading towards unprecedented third elections in less than a year, following a roller-coaster 10 months that saw the country endure two inconclusive polls. Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) won them both times, but without enough seats to rule alone - a far cry from 2011 when the premier won an absolute majority.

Economy grows 0.5% THE service sector helped the UK economy grow faster than expected in the three months after the Brexit vote. It expanded by 0.5% in the July-to-September period, according to the Office for National Statistics. That was slower than the 0.7% rate in the previous quarter, but stronger than analysts’ estimates of about 0.3%. The ONS said: “There is little evidence of a pronounced effect in the immediate aftermath of the vote.” The growth, stronger than expected, will fur-

ther dampen expectations that the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee will cut interest rates next week. Phillip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer, welcomed the figures, saying: “The fundamentals of the UK economy are strong, and the data shows that the economy is resilient.” But Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, Jonathan Reynolds, said: “Continued disappointing, sluggish growth shows the failures of the Tories’ economic approach after six years in power.

Sterling’s uncertain future FOR the last couple of weeks, sterling has traded in a limited range against the US dollar and the Euro and has been very close to recent lows.

Brexit sentiment is shifting on a day-byday basis, with rhetoric supporting sterling in the earlier part of last week, negated by the week’s close. Against the euro, sterling seems to be more supported, but this is more of a euro weakness story, on the back of the European Central Bank (ECB)’s statement last Thursday, following its meeting. This week saw Carney speaking on Tuesday afternoon, followed by some preliminary UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data yesterday (Thursday). Again, there is expectation that economic data will be ignored, the spotlight remaining on political

factors to drive the pound’s market direction. Will euro weakness continue? Last week, we saw the euro weaken against major currencies. This was partly down to European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi’s statement earlier in the week. He gave no hints about his monetary policy, especially regarding the scheduled end of the current, quantitativeeasing programme, which is set to be completed in March. Key data released this week saw the German Producer Price Index (PPI) come out worse than expected at -1.4%. We also saw Prime Minister Theresa May’s first European Summit meeting. Brexit was discussed, but this was overshadowed by the faltering Canadian Trade deal. This comes off the back of last month, when the German Economic Minister and Vice Chancellor announced gridlock over the US-

Eurozone trade deal. This week, we will see the German manufacturing Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI), which is expected to remain the same as before, at 54.3. This is followed closely by the Eurozone PMI data, which will be affected by the German PMI outcome. Favourable outcomes within this data could, potentially, see the euro strengthen against

currency peers like the US dollar and euro. Today (Friday), we’ll see German Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, which is expected to remain at 0.1%. A result that fails to meet the mark could cause weakness for the euro. A busy week for the US economy Last week ended with a speech from Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) member Williams. The

dollar strengthened slightly against the euro, following European Central Bank (ECB) President Draghi’s hint at continued quantitative-easing within the Eurozone, and was relatively steady against sterling. This week began with manufacturing Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI), and short-term bond sales. Tuesday saw more data released and more bond

sales, with CB consumer confidence being the highlight of the day. Wednesday saw a pickup in high-impact data, with services PMI, New Home Sales and Crude Oil Inventories all released. Data releases continued yesterday (Thursday) with Core Durable Goods Orders and Pending Home Sales. The week finishes with The University of Michigan consumer sentiment and consumer expectations, and the most important data release of the week: quarterly US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures. This measure of growth is likely to cause the most impact within dollar markets, because GDP will affect the actions of the Federal Reserve, and its interest-rate decisions, later this year. Any changes in the upcoming US Presidential Election (where markets have begun to price in a Hilary Clinton win) could also cause volatility.

He ain’t heavy, he’s my sister! A woman who spent 15 years searching for her long-lost brother, later discovered he was now her sister!

Linda Vine, 58, from Clayton-Le-Moors in Lancashire, who was adopted as a young baby, decided 18 years ago to look for her birth mother and halfsister Cheryl, as well as her two-half brothers Stephen and Leslie. She first tried to contact with her mother, but received a letter saying there was no chance of a reconciliation. Linda, a motherof-four, then tried to uncover her siblings by tracking down their first names, and then found them on Facebook. Eventually, in 2013, she had a “friend” request accepted by a Melissa Ede, whom she thought must have been the wife of one of her brothers. But when she read Melissa’s profile more closely, and noticed the resemblance between their blue eyes and blonde hair, Linda discovered that she was, in fact, her brother, who had been born a man. Despite the shock, though, the two women have now struck up a close friendship and have developed a sisterly bond. Linda told the Daily

Star: “For years, there was something missing from my life, and now I know it was Melissa. “My search was all about finding my biological family, so Melissa’s gender has never mattered a bit to me. I’m just thrilled to have found my sister.” Mrs Vine was born in 1958, when her biological mother was just 18, and she was given away to a new family when aged just five months. But she grew up always knowing of her adoption, and that she had three younger halfsiblings. Having been born as Leslie, Miss Ede started living as Melissa in 2005 and had gender-reassignment surgery in 2011. Now a taxi driver from Hull, she said: “Meeting Linda, who has only ever known me as a woman, was a blessing.” The pair now meet up regularly, but Linda has yet to hear from her other half-siblings. “My relationship with Melissa is enough to fill the void that has plagued me all these years,” she said.

Top banks are not deserting Britain BRITISH banks and Tory MPs have dismissed as “nonsense” the dire warnings that financiers will move their business abroad because of Brexit.

Anthony Browne, head of the British Bankers’ Association, sparked fury at the weekend by saying smaller banks could react to the uncertainty by moving operations overseas within weeks. He even predicted that larger financial institutions would follow in the first few months of next year, saying: “Their hands are quivering over the relocate button.” But Browne’s gloomladen claims were totally undermined when a number of High Street banks said that leaving the EU would make little difference to their business. Santander pointed out that their Spanish owners were happy to have operations located outside the EU. One bank said the BBA’s warnings were “nonsense”, while another one insisted: “Brexit is a bit of a nonissue for us.” John Redwood, the respected Tory MP for Wokingham, also pointed out that foreign banks were currently investing in Britain.

“We have seen ING move more of its traders into London recently, and Wells Fargo announced a new £300m headquarters after the Brexit vote,” he said pointedly. Labour was accused of trying to water down Brexit when a senior MP demanded transitional arrangements after Britain negotiates a deal with the EU. Hilary Benn, chairman of the powerful all new Commons’ Brexit committee, said businesses must continue to have access to the single market if a trade deal is not reached by March 2019. Appearing on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, he said: “I think the importance of a transitional arrangement is that it would offer some confidence to business.” But Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg countered: “We don’t have transitional arrangements. That’s the point of departure. It’s like missing a train and jumping on the tracks.” Mr Benn also said MPs should get a vote on the UK’s negotiating strategy. But Mr Rees-Mogg added: “Parliament is there to scrutinise, and not be there to replace the executive.” “So far, the actual responses from the banks themselves have been positive, not negative, so I find what

the BBA is warning to be quite difficult to believe.” Conservative MP Peter Bone added: ‘This is nothing more than a continuation of Project Fear. These people simply have not accepted the referendum result.” Mr Browne, a former journalist at the BBC and The Times, said fears that EU leaders would want to erect trade barriers to weaken the City of London during Brexit negotiations were to blame for the banks’ supposed move. He wrote in The Observer: “Banking is probably more affected by Brexit than any other sector of the economy. “It is the UK’s biggest export industry by far, but it also gets its legal rights to serve its customers cross-border from the EU. “For banks, Brexit does not simply mean additional tariffs. It is about whether banks have the legal right to provide services.” The BBA chief added: “Banks might hope for the best but have to plan for the worst. Most international banks now have project teams working out which operations they need to move to ensure they can continue serving customers, and how best to do it. “Many smaller banks plan to start relocations

before Christmas this year - but bigger banks are expected to start in the first quarter of next year.” After his career in journalism, Mr Browne entered the world of banking himself by taking a position at Morgan Stanley. He has previously written eurosceptic pieces, but has always argued that Britain should stay in the European Union. But a Santander spokesman said: “We are one of the most British banks there is; we just happen to be owned by a Spanish bank. “But they have operations all over the world, so they are comfortable with having a business which is not in an EU country.” A source at another major High Street bank said: “The comments are inconsistent with what we’ve been saying so far. Brexit is a bit of a non-issue for us.” Another major High Street bank said: “We are not sure that Mr Browne was really talking about the likes of us. It feels more like this is about global investment banks rather than us. “The comments didn’t resonate. It doesn’t make sense for us. We’re headquartered in the UK, and we have a clear strategy for the UK.”

Lady Greed flaunts her massive wealth AS the storm raged about Sir Philip’s reign at BHS and his knighthood, his wife Lady Green flaunted the couple’s mindblowing wealth in the Monaco tax haven. The 67-year-old Tina Green is seen flying out of Monaco on her private Eurocopter EC 155 helicopter, while sporting a huge diamond ring on her finger. She displays a £27,000 Chanel handbag beside her £8million helicopter … on the day husband Sir Philip begged for sympathy during a TV

interview. The cost of her handbag dwarfed the £2,000 redundancy deal for BHS workers this year. Mum-of-three Jean Costello, 53, one of the many BHS victims,

mocked her by donning a black puff jacket, shades and holding a 5p BHS bag - while waiting for a bus in North Shields. Jean said: “How the other half live! It’s

almost flaunting it. It’s obscene. Here I am, going to work with an £11-a-week bus pass and worried about the mortgage. “I have three grandchildren. How am I going to tell them there will be no presents from Santa?” Sir Philip was branded a “spiv” over the £307m dividends paid to his wife from 2002 to 2005. He sold BHS 10 years later for £1, and 11,000 jobs went when it folded, with a £57m pension deficit. Lady Green, who controls their £3.2bn

fortune, flashed her giant diamond ring before being flown by helicopter from Monte Carlo to Nice - a full 13 miles away! Her appearance came as Sir Philip, 64, claimed his family, who spent much of the summer on their new £100million super-yacht, had endured a “horrible time”. Yet MPs voted last Thursday to strip him of his knighthood. He again vowed to plug the huge BHS pension hole, although he is under no legal obligation. But he

stressed: “The misery of dealing with this on a daily basis is not fun.” But while Sir Philip runs Arcadia, the group which used to own BHS, it is, in turn, owned by Lady Green’s Taveta Investments. And that means any pension demands could go to her. A Taveta spokesman said directors “very much regret the terrible impact” of BHS’s failure on former staff ,and there were “serious and extensive efforts to find a pensions’ solution involving a substantial voluntary contribution”.

Quatari man who molested teenager during long flight

A TOURIST from Qatar was facing jail after being convicted of molesting a teenage girl during a flight from Doha to Manchester while his wife sat beside him!

Suman Das, 46, was arrested when the plane landed at Manchester airport after his 18-yearold victim claimed he touched her between the legs while she was sleeping. She awoke to a “rubbing sensation” and ran crying to the back of the plane, where she alerted a member of the cabin crew. At the time of the assault, Das’ wife, Sonia, was sat beside him, unaware of her husband’s actions. The 46-year-old initially claimed he must have touched the girl by accident while fidgeting in his seat at 30,000 feet. He later claimed he could not have carried out the assault as he was asleep. The incident occurred in July, five hours into the flight from the Qatar capital. Das and his wife, Sonia, were visiting the UK for a “holiday of a lifetime”. The girl was returning to England after spending two months in Thailand. She told the hearing: “He knew exactly what he was doing - and he wasn’t sleeping. He was looking at me

… I saw he was looking at me. “He must have been looking at me to see if I was awake. He did move very quickly once he saw that I was awake.” The distressed girl ran to the back of the plane and told a member of the cabin crew. Holly Holden, prosecuting, said: “In this case, the victim has zero motivation to make a false claim. Her evidence has been consistent and credible throughout. This was an 18-year-old flying alone. She said that the defendant touched her between the legs over her clothing. “One person sitting next to another may jostle someone with their elbow. But to touch them between the legs without knowing is a deliberate action. “He gave two versions of events and said he was very concerned that this could prevent him from getting a UK visa and would destroy his life.” During the hearing, Das’ wife of 23 years said she had “complete faith in her husband”, adding: “I have had no concern. Until today, I have faith in my husband, and still today I have total faith in my husband.” She also told the court that Das told her following the flight that if he saw the girl and her mother, he wanted to talk to them to apologise. Ellie Akhgar, for the defence, told the court: “This man has no previous convictions,

so why would he now decide to take the plunge into criminality and sexually assault a stranger on a plane, with his wife sat next to him? “He is a family man and a visitor to this country, and has been here for the last three months. These cases are always very difficult, emotive and veryhighly-charged. “You have seen the victim to be emotional, and you have seen the defendant also becoming very emotional. But the fact is that emotion can be manufactured. “She feels a rubbing sensation - a light, rubbing sensation and she feels an arm moving away from that very tight, constricted area. “She doesn’t say, ‘what the hell are you doing’? “This is a young woman who had been travelling to Thailand for two months. She would have had to have some degree of confidence - enough to say something to Mr Das. “Being awoken by the ‘sensation’ of sexual assault does not mean a sexual assault took place. The whole time, she says nothing. This was a very, very long flight, and this man is being scrutinised for fidgeting.” However, Das, who has been staying with friends in Bolton since his arrest, was convicted of sexual assault and was sentenced yesterday (Thursday).

Boatie McAttenborough! WORK on the UK’s new £200m polar research ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough, has formally begun at Cammell Laird, on Merseyside.

A special ceremony saw a crane lower a near-100-tonne segment of keel on to blocks on the Birkenhead shipbuilder’s slipway - and the ship is scheduled to be working by 2019. The vessel is already well-known to millions because of the online vote to name it, which saw the public choose Boaty McBoatface. The fun name is, perhaps, not fitting enough for such a magnificent vessel, so an autonomous submarine, deployed by

T R A C E Y Bortoft, a mum of four, was just enjoying a day out in Liverpool last year when she discovered two tiny puncture wounds on her right calf.

Within 10 minutes, the 39-year-old’s health had deteriorated rapidly and she was rushed to hospital in agony, with a huge swelling and blisters on her leg. More than 18 months later, Tracey, from Blackburn, Lancs, says she is still housebound and barely able to walk. She also says that doctors have still not been able to identify the insect which bit her. The bewildered mum said: “It’s had a devastating impact on my life. I can hardly walk, and if I put my foot down on the floor, I can suffer with shooting pains for the whole day. “There’s no time for a family home life now. I used to be very sociable, but I don’t like going out. My husband bought me a mobility scooter, but I hate going out with it. I’m 39, and I shouldn’t need to use one. She added: “I feel

the ship, will be given that name instead. The government intervened and that recognition of BBC TV veteran presenter and naturalist Sir David Attenborough for the main vessel would be more fitting. And, in keeping with his mild-mannered nature and sense of humour, the broadcaster said with a chuckle: “The name Boaty has been preserved and will be whizzing around Antarctica for years to come, alongside me, I’m happy to say!” On a more serious note, he added: “I know that the work they will be doing onboard the new polar ship will be important, not only for science but for the whole world,. “That’s because what happens down in the Antarctic is crucial for

what happens to the climate of the Earth.” Linton Roberts, Cammell Laird’s managing director, said the keellaying ceremony was an important moment for his company - an event that had drawn huge interest. “To be honest, I could have sold tickets because so many people wanted to attend,” he told BBC News. “It’s another chapter in the yard’s history. We’ve built every conceivable

type of ship over the last 200 years. Obviously, we’ve come through a period when British ship-building has been in the doldrums. “But we’re fighting our way back, and we see the RRS Sir David Attenborough as a break-out vessel to get us right up there into the top tier.” Cammell Laird believes the experience of delivering a complex project like the Attenborough will help

it win future orders; not just for more research vessels but for a range of ships which companies might want to operate in the Arctic and the Antarctic. There is growing interest, for example, in tourism at the poles; and regular cargo routes are likely to open up as the seasonal extent of sea-ice in the far north continues to diminish. The Birkenhead shipbuilder signed the contract to construct

Insect bite has left mum, 39, crippled

embarrassed. I’ve arranged with the school to pick my kids up from the office so I don’t have to go into the yard and see the other parents. “The kids are used to it now, but they still ask me why I can’t do things with them: why can’t I play football with them? Why can’t they make me better?”

Tracey, enjoying a day out on her nephew’s birthday in May last year, was taking a phone call outside a Liverpool

restaurant when she felt a nip on her right lower calf. Just 10 minutes later, she and husband Brett, 34, were racing home to Blackburn because she felt unwell. Within an hour it was agony for her to put her foot on the ground. By 7pm, the pain was so unbearable that Tracey was rushed to the A&E at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, before being moved to an emergency careward. Tracey, who spent 11 days in hospital, developed a huge, burn-like sore before the bite became an angry blister. But she claims doctors were still unable to say what had bitten her. She said the blisters and angry red skin started to subside only 5½ weeks after she was first admitted to hospital. And, more than 18 months later, she is housebound and cannot walk without agonising shooting

pains in her leg. Tracey has also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and a fluid-retention illness lymphedema, and she suffers from shortterm memory loss and fatigue. From leading an active life as a pub licensee, Mrs Bortoft has a mobility scooter and the family are having a chairlift fitted to enable her to get up and down the stairs. And the onceoutgoing woman must now pay regular visits to a dermatologist, physiotherapist and psychologist. Tracey, mother to a 21-year-old daughter and three sons, aged four, six and 11, said: “The bite didn’t hurt straight away, but it looked like two little puncture wounds almost like a snake bite. “Within minutes I started to go downhill and feel nauseous. By the time I got to hospital, the pain was worse than childbirth. “I was in agony … I was screaming at

the 128m-long vessel last November. The deal committed the company to deliver the ice-breaker in 31 months - and design work, led by RollsRoyce, resulted in the first steel being cut in July. Tradition calls for the first keel segment to be placed atop a coin. On this occasion, it will be a newly-minted coin from the British Antarctic Territory - that part of Antarctica claimed by the UK. “Once the ship is launched, we will recover the coin and we’ll present it to the crew for good luck while they sail the oceans,” said Mr Roberts. The vessel is set to replace the UK’s existing polar fleet - the RRS James Clark Ross and the RRS Ernest Shackleton.

the doctors to get off when they touched me because it was so bad.” Tracey claims she has tried desperately to obtain a consultation with an expert at Liverpool’s School of Tropical Medicine. But, she was told in a letter from her GP that the centre would only see patients bitten abroad. But the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the NHS clinic at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, have denied they refused to see Tracey on these grounds. A spokesman for the Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Mrs Bortoft was referred to the NHS Tropical clinic at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, where her case was reviewed by one of our consultants. “She had already been under the care of another consultant, and, as her condition was not related to a tropical illness, she would not have benefited from our specialist advice.” He added: “Mrs Bortoft’s condition can be treated at her local hospital, closer to her home. This information was relayed to her GP.”

Bookworm girls leave poor boys floundering READ it and weep, boys! You are “lagging behind” girls in developing your reading skills, and you tend to choose books that are not likely to challenge or stimulate you enough.

While boys aged between five and 18 are also more likely to choose non-fiction over fiction, they are still not reading the material as thoroughly as girls. These are the findings of education expert Keith Topping, professor of educational and social research at the University of Dundee, who arrived at these conclusions after carrying out two studies about the subject . One drew data from 10% of the UK’s 8.4 million school-aged children, while another looked at the results of reading comprehension tests, provided online

by Renaissance’s Accelerated Reader and taken by 150,220 pupils in 967 schools. The findings have now been published in What Kids Are Reading, which looks at the reading habits of 750,000 children of all abilities, between 2014-15. While the study shows there are differences between boys and girls, says Topping, the reason why their reading habits differ is still “a bit of a mystery”. He told The Guardian newspaper: “Interestingly, socio-economic status was not related. Here, it is not a big influence … not an influence in any shape or form.” His report suggests that teachers become more aware o f

the differences between the reading habits of boys and girls, and try to encourage youngsters to challenge themselves - even those with higher reading levels. Topping also suggests more research into what boys like to read, to help keep them interested in their chosen books. The What Kids Are Reading study also found that while girls t e n d to read more

fiction titles, they still read non-fiction more thoroughly than boys, who usually skip over large sections. The study also revealed that authors Jeff Kinney, David Walliams, Roald Dahl and Francesca Simon, as well as the Harry Potter series, were favourite choices for both genders. Topping added: “We are not saying, ‘read hundreds of classics and everything will be all right’. “Boys need to read challenging books about a subject in which they are interested.”

What a cheek! A SAUCY car thief stole a couple’s £120,000 Range Rover repeatedly… only to return it every morning, clean - and with a full tank of petrol!

Zhang, a 19-year-old from China, got away with the crafty act until he took the vehicle for two nights in a row, alerting the wealthy owners’ suspicions. Wang, who lives in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province in east China, called police when he first noticed his Range Rover missing from its spot in an underground car park one evening. When they came to investigate, they were shocked to learn the car, worth about £121,000, turned up the next morning in immaculate condition - and the petrol tank full. They then inspected surveillance footage and saw the suspect waltzing into the underground car park at around midnight, driving the car away skilfully, and returning

at 6am the following day. They caught Zhang in the act as he returned the car from a third consecutive night out, and detained him for theft. Zhang, who told officers he never intended to steal the car, said he’d been using it to impress friends and women, while posing as a wealthy bachelor around the city’s famous West Lake. Wang and wife, Liu, own at least five luxury vehicles, using them regularly for social events. After learning of the rich couple’s routine, Zhang forged a pair of car keys and began pinching the car at night, according to reports, taking it to the car-wash and bringing it back in perfect condition so the owners would not notice its disappearance. The youngster, who had keys for other luxury vehicles on him, was jailed for 15 days and fined around £60. And Zhang could also face further charges because investigators discovered he was a repeat offender, with previous thefts on record.

Brexit backlash could harm vegetable crops A LEADING farmer has warned that British vegetables will disappear from supermarket shelves if thousands of Eastern Europeans are prevented from working in the UK because of post-Brexit immigration.

Guy Poskitt, who grows 80,000 tons of carrots and parsnips a year in Yorkshire, says it is impossible to find enough British labourers to do the work. Last year, the number of EU nationals in the UK rose by an estimated 180,000, but the Government is committed to reducing total immigration to tens of thousands. “If you took migrant workers out of the supply chain, you would have no fresh British produce on the

supermarket shelves within five days,” said Mr Poskitt. He told Sky News that he pays agencies £9.50 per hour for temporary labourers and that, without Eastern Europe workers, the industry would collapse. “My business would have to close,” he added. “We could not serve our customers without the availability of migrant

workers.” A group of Czech labourers, picking pumpkins from a nearby field for supply to major supermarkets, said they were puzzled that some people say they are no longer welcome. “I take home £50-60 a day here, but just £30 for work in Prague,” said 21-year-old Patrick Dumka, as he stood in the muddy field which

is his place of work for nine hours a day. He picks more than 1,000 pumpkins during each shift, in all weathers, taking just an hour’s rest in a makeshift shelter, and joking that the British are too lazy to do the work. “This is good work, normal work for us,” he said with a smile. “It is not hard.” Mark Straw, whose Abbey Personnel Services company supplies labourers to Yorkshire farms, claims there is no alternative to Eastern European labour. From his Selby office, he hires and transports 200 Eastern Europeans to work each day, and says locals will not take the jobs on offer in agriculture. “It’s outdoor, it’s physical, and you’d say there are little prospects for advancement,” he said. “It’s unskilled labour, so the locals do not want to do this kind of work.”

Vigilante parents are curse of drug-dealers THOUSANDS of people in the Philippines have been “executed” in a brutal war on drugs since Rodrigo “The Punisher” Duterte became President at the end of June. And a vigilante married couple, who have kids, claim their gang have killed upwards of 800 drug dealers and users. Assassins Ace and Sheila (not their real names), who form part of a prolific hit team, have defended their roles in the bloodbath, saying they turned to this extraordinary life to make sure their children wouldn’t starve. They claim to earn $100 for every kill, and that their work is critical because “many lives will be ruined” if a dealer isn’t executed. More than 4,000 alleged users and dealers - and an untold number of innocent victims - have been killed since new President Rodrigo “The

Punisher” won power and promised a crackdown on drugs-related crime immediately. Even during his election campaign, Duterte appeared to encourage extrajudicial killings. But he has denied any links to the wave of killings which has terrorised the country. It has also been condemned by humanrights’ groups. Ace and Sheila’s group claimed responsibility for 25% of the 2,800 extra-judicial murders which had occurred by the time they spoke to SBS Dateline, using fake names and disguises to hide their identities. In a chilling interview, the married killers described how they became involved in the mayhem, and how their targets are chosen by a “boss” - a well-known policeman. Ace said: “They might be ordinary people, but they’re all pretty much

the same - drug-pushers or crooks, or they’ve crossed our boss. We bring down those types of people. “Just with a phone call, we get the person’s identification, and we just base it on that. Then, if we find the person on his own, we go in immediately and kill him. And then get away.” He added: “From the beginning, I knew it was really risky. But if I don’t do it, there’s an even greater risk that I won’t be able to feed my family because I can’t do any other work.” Ace said Sheila is brought in at times when the kill squad’s male members can’t get close to its victim. She sometimes pretends to work as a dancer in a club if the target is a regular visitor. Every target is shot dead, and the vigilante group aim to finish every “job” within three days.

Sheila said: “That’s how it’s done. When we’re given the identification, we don’t ask questions – that’s the first rule in our group!” The hit squad leave a card reading “pusher” at the scene to attract media and to prove “the job is done”. Sheila does feel guilty when she goes home and sees her children, but she tries to justify the killings, saying: “I tell myself that the person I’ve killed is a much worse person. “Many lives will be ruined if he is not killed. So he must die, and that’s not my fault. I’ve done nothing wrong. If he weren’t a bad person, he wouldn’t have been in that situation. But despite her guilty feeling, it’s not something she can just walk away from. She fears she would be murdered by the hit squad if she quit abruptly - to prevent her from revealing their secrets.

ETA’s final weapons’ haul found in France

FRENCH police are convinced they have discovered the last major weapons store belonging to ETA, the Basque terrorist organisation. The cache was located in a forest next to Compiègne, north of Paris.

Arms, documents and other materials were found hidden in four, large, buried containers. Small arms, such as revolvers and rifles, were among the haul. According to police sources, the operation was carried out after a number of communications had been intercepted. “There is a lot of material there, and it was preferable to act now,” say the sources. The few remaining ETA members still on the run - around a dozen, apparently - were believed to be gathering their remaining weapons in one location, so they could hand them over in the presence of international intermediaries. There are, reportedly, still arms’ caches left to discover. But in some cases, not even active ETA members know where they are. The cache, discovered last Wednesday, had been put together over a period of weeks, but no one had been close to the store in recent days, said French police. The terrorist group, which waged a bloody campaign over 43 years

that cost 850 lives, was fighting for independence for the northern Basque Country region from Spain. However, weakened through operations by Spanish and French forces, it chose to announce the end of its armed struggle nearly five years ago. However, it has not yet dissolved, or handed over its weapons. Recently, the terrorist group and several French politicians, linked to radical left, so-called abertzale politicians in the Basque Country, have sent letters to the French government stating their willingness to bring the curtain down on ETA. High-ranking French politicians, some of whom are close to President François Hollande, say they are in favour of “exploring dialogue” with the current leaders of the group. But other members of the French Government have rejected such a reconciliation, which, in theory, could conclude with the weapons’ hand-over. Among the latter are Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Interior Ministry chief Bernard Cazenueve, according to sources with close knowledge of the preliminary contacts. The French police, in harmony with the Spanish authorities, were aware of these steps being taken. But they decided to act and seize the weapons cache in Compiègne, in which there was also material which could have been used to carry out attacks.

Operation Gold Rush with Dan Snow Sunday 30th October, BBC2, 21.00

Don't Miss...

In an epic adventure, historian Dan Snow follows in the footsteps of the 19th century’s last great gold rush. A journey filled with genuine danger and thrilling beauty. Leading a one month expedition he’s joined by polar explorer Felicity Aston and remote environment medic Dr Kevin Fong. Their goal - to strike gold in Canada’s frozen wilderness. They’ll attempt to retrace a gruelling 600 mile journey through one of the world’s last great wildernesses. It’ll take them from the coast of Alaska to the gold fields of the Klondike, a remote region on the edge of the Canadian arctic. A journey first undertaken by tens of thousands of gold seekers; men and women from around the globe who in the last years of the 19th century dropped everything and set off for the Klondike in the hope of striking it rich. So great were the hardships they encountered that only 1 in 3 of those who set off ever made it there. Now, Dan and his team are re-living those struggles and experiences in the hunt for their own gold. In this first episode Dan and his team take on the Alaskan Coastal Mountains, a wall of snow and rock blocking their way to the Klondike and its gold. Following the routes used by the Klondikers they’ll split up to experience two very different gold rush journeys. As they begin their journey to the gold fields, they will have to cross icy rivers, avalanche prone slopes and climb a near vertical icy ascent... The BBC’s Gold Rush Game Maker will enable viewers to create their own gold rush adventures inspired by the exploits of Dan and the team.

Saving Africa’s Elephants: Hugh and the Ivory War BBC1, 21.00 In this second episode, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall sets out to persuade the British Government to address the problem of the UK’s own legal ivory trade, exploring whether lessons can be learned for the survival of the elephant by investigating the disturbing and complex world of rhino poaching. Rhino horn is sold in Asia on the black market for $30-60,000 per kilo, making it more valuable than gold and platinum. Hugh begins his journey in South Africa at the anti-poaching headquarters of Kruger National Park, where last year the team lost an estimated 800 rhino from the park in a battle to deal with 7,500 attempts to poach them – but Hugh finds that the animals were not the only victims in this complex ‘war’. Outside the National Park, Hugh accompanies a group of local farmers, rhino security firms and police in a night raid of locals suspected of harbouring guns and rhino horn. He discovers that at the heart of the poaching problem in South Africa is a shocking poverty that drives people to risk everything, including their lives, to kill rhino for their horn. Hugh then goes undercover to investigate the dangerous world of rhino horn dealers in Vietnam, and considers the argument that legalising the trade in rhino horn and elephant ivory would ultimately buy their survival. Back in the UK Hugh meets one of the UKs most ardent champions of elephant and rhino conservation, The Duke of Cambridge. They discuss “demand reduction” – the efforts of wildlife NGOs to change the culture of consumption in places like Asia. Applying the lessons he learns from the rhino crisis, Hugh is determined to get answers from the UK government and take the fight right to the top.

Antiques Roadshow - Golden Age of Travel Special BBC1, 20.00

In an ambitious first, Antiques Roadshow boards Britain’s most famous steam locomotive for a special edition that celebrates the golden age of travel. Fresh from her ten-year restoration programme, the Flying Scotsman welcomes Fiona Bruce and experts along with visitors bringing treasured family heirlooms that each tell tales from different eras of travel’s bygone days. As the locomotive thunders across Cumbria and Yorkshire, visitors on board tell experts about relatives who took part in some of the greatest moments in travel history. Family legends like the greatgrandfather who drove the Flying Scotsman on its 1928 record-breaking non-stop journey from London to Scotland, and the pilot who flew in the early days of luxury air travel, when flying boats delivered guests to five-star hotels around the world.

Halloween family movie double bill, starting with a deliciously dark animated comedy-horror for older children and adults, directed by Sam Fell and Chris Butler. Twelveyear-old Norman Babcock lives in the sleepy New England town of Blithe Hollow. He’s a bit of a loner and is picked upon by his schoolmates, who call him Ab-Norman. But the thing that really makes him stand out is his ability to see and speak with the many ghosts that linger in Blithe Hollow. And, while no one believes Norman’s claims, the town’s population soon discover that he is the only person who may be able to save them from the twin horrors of a witch’s curse and a zombie invasion.

Dark Angel ITV1, 21.00

It’s 1857 and 24-year-old Mary Ann Cotton has come home to Seaham, County Durham after four years away, having eloped to Cornwall with Billy Mowbray. Her mother, Margaret, and kindly step father George Stott, welcome them with open arms. Mary Ann lost four babies in as many years while she was away, and they have come back home to make a clean start. She has one baby girl left, Margaret Jane, her fifth child. George, determined to make Billy do right by his step daughter, persuades him to take out life insurance. Mary Ann reveals to her mother that she’s pregnant again – her sixth baby. The child is born and christened Isabella, but her elder sister, Margaret Jane, falls ill soon after and dies in the night. As Mary Ann stands by the grave of her fifth dead child, we see that she is once again pregnant. Billy and Mary Ann move to Sunderland for Billy’s work. Their new home is small, dirty and riddled with bedbugs. While shopping for arsenic to kill the bugs she meets handsome and flirtatious miner Joe Nattrass with whom she begins a passionate affair. When Billy returns home, he breaks the news that he’s unable to work having injured his leg. Angry with him, Mary Ann tells him he’s no use at all and goes to make tea. As she’s in the kitchen she catches sight of the bottle of arsenic powder. On impulse, she drops a little into the tea pot. Billy falls sick and eventually dies. Reluctantly, she collects what she’s owed from the life insurance. Mary Ann takes a job as a nurse with best friend Maggie. Although Joe Nattrass is still on the scene, he is reluctant to continue their affair while Mary Ann is unmarried. She quickly finds a new husband, George Ward, but when Joe spurns her and George fails to provide, he too becomes victim to the dreaded teapot. Mary Ann gladly collects the money from George Ward’s life insurance then promptly finds another job as a housekeeper in the middle-class Robinson household. Grief-stricken widower James Robinson is father to five children, whom his sister Helen has been caring for. Once she has gained the trust of James’ eldest son William, she makes a play for James himself. Just as things are going well with James, Mary Ann is called home to tend to her sick mother. Margaret senses Mary Ann is on the hunt for a new husband and asks if she has life insurance on this one too. It’s not long before Margaret’s health takes a turn for the worse, and under her daughter’s watchful eye, she dies. Mary Ann is free to return to the Robinson household, but is forced to take her only surviving child Isabella, with her.

W C choice The Victorian Slum BBC2, 21:00

In the heart of the modern East End of London, a Victorian slum has been recreated and a group of 21st-century people move in. The slum dwellers have moved into the 1890s when Britain was slowly recovering from an economic depression. Cheap foodstuffs and mass-manufactured goods have found their way into the slum’s shop but only some of the residents can afford them. The Howarths are the lucky ones - they now have a bespoke tailor’s shop and tailor Russell can make good money catering to middle class Londoners who couldn’t afford Saville Row suits. Their relative prosperity means Mandy can turn her attention to being a respectable Victorian house wife. The Potter family’s experience reflects the lives of countless Victorian poor who struggled with low wages and irregular work, but they are offered a lifeline by their neighbour Maria who needs help with her laundry business. But a water shortage during the 1890s makes life even harder.

This World: Unarmed Black Male

28th October - 3rd November 2016

W ednesday

BBC2, 21.00

Unarmed Black Male follows the murder trial of a white police officer in Portsmouth, Virginia, accused of shooting an unarmed black teenager. On 22 April 2015, Officer Stephen Rankin responded to a report of shoplifting at a Walmart store. Minutes after arriving in the parking lot he shot and killed William Chapman. After Chapman’s death, Rankin was fired from Portsmouth Police Department and charged with first-degree murder. Chapman was just one of 306 black men who were killed by police in the US last year, but just 14 police officers faced any charges - Rankin was one of them. With extraordinary access to the prosecution and defence, as well as Chapman’s family and friends and those closest to Officer Rankin, this powerful 90-minute documentary from award-winning filmmaker James Jones (Children Of The Gaza War) forensically follows the drama as the trial unfolds and unpicks Rankin’s troubling prior record in the police department. During a summer of increasing tension across America the film explores the reaction of a divided community to the prosecution of a local police officer. Part of the award-winning This World strand on BBC Two.

Bublé at the BBC BBC1, 20.00

Michael Bublé talks exclusively to Claudia Winkleman for this BBC Music special on BBC One, a world exclusive 60-minute entertainment spectacular. Michael performs his much-loved classic hits and, for the first time on UK television, songs from his brand new album Nobody But Me. He is accompanied by his band as well as a dazzling 30-plus piece orchestra. The conductor and arranger is Steve Sidwell. Filmed in front of a live studio audience at MediaCityUK in Salford, the multi-platinum record selling, Grammy Award-winning Canadian artist chats to Claudia about fatherhood and how it has changed his priorities in life; the risk of producing his latest album himself, starting out in the business, his family and wife and much much more. Plus there are a few surprises for unsuspecting fans along the way. Michael says: “I loved Adele at the BBC and I’m so excited and honoured to have been invited by the BBC to do my own show for them. I’m sure it will be a blast. Tonight is one of those moments in your life that you wait for with bated breath - you wait for that call from the BBC and they ask you do to a Special - I’m so nervous!” Presenting her first music special, Claudia says: “When you are asked ‘would you like to interview Michael Bublé and watch him sing?’ you don’t say no. You change your whole life to accommodate this request. I can’t wait.” The show follows in the footsteps of the Bafta-nominated Adele at the BBC, broadcast on BBC One in November 2015. It included a sketch featuring Adele impersonators which has had over 51m views on the BBC YouTube channel.

Sorry, I Didn’t Know ITV2, 20.30 Following on from the success of last year’s specials, ITV2 Fresh unveils four brand new 30-minute singles, which showcase the breadth of talent and will air in the run up to the MOBO Awards on ITV2. Nothing divides Americans more than their constitutional right to bear arms versus the merits of gun control. Fiercely debated in the run-up to the US election, this allconsuming preoccupation with firearms can seem baffling. To understand how and why guns are so central to American life, this Cutting Edge documentary has gained access to a small, family-run shop in Michigan, documenting the many and varied customers who come through the shop’s doors and revealing the relationship that everyday Americans have with their guns. Going beyond the gun-toting stereotypes, this thought-provoking documentary explores all sides of the debate from the floor of a shop where the routines of buying and selling are so familiar but the products on sale are shockingly different.

Showstoppers steal the show

JUST when you think a show can’t possibly get any better, it does! The talented students of the Gillian Banks Theatre School in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, flew in for the fifth consecutive year to entertain us as part of their work experience. They certainly pulled out all the stops. Their fantastic, feelgood show included pieces from the Rocky

Horror Show, Starlight Express, Annie and Chicago to name but a few. And, along with four-piece band The Magnetix, the whole evening at the Los Cristianos Auditorium was just perfect. A total of 3,500 euros was raised for local charities Live Arico PAWS, Helping Hands and the Amigos de Gillian Banks Association,

which concentrates solely on the children of Granadilla’s Guaidyl day centre. Sue Havenhand, from Live Arico, said: “On behalf of all three charities, I would like to thank Gillian Banks for bringing the show to us again; Martyn Howells for sound and light; the amazing students who work so hard every year, and the adult helpers

who accompany them. “We had fantastic raffle prizes donated by Bombay Babu, Kaluna Beach Club, Megabowl, Venture Restaurants, Salon Coco Beau, and Gift Sports Shop, and thanks to all of you. “Finally, of course, to everyone who came, supported and enjoyed the show, muchas gracias. Until next year.” Photos: Mark Thornton Photography

As he was not chipped, we have to assume he was abandoned, so he now needs a home. He is only a few months old, and will be medium-to-large sized. He is a lovely-natured dog, and deserves a change of fortune. If you can give Bruno a loving home - for life - please call Elaine on 678 015653, to arrange a meeting. Thank you Top Square! We had a great night last Friday, as always, on a very-busy Top Square. Great entertainment was provided by Celine and Danny, Debbie Diamond, Colin Stevens, Robbie Dominic, Tanya Tevaro and pocket-dynamo Coco, aged 10. Thanks

to all who came and supported us, as always, you were fantastic. Our charity shops There are plenty of bargains for all, so have a good root round at any of our three shops: San Eugenio Opposite Hotel La Nina, at Las Carabelas near Amanda’s Bar. FOR many people, October may be their favourite month. They plan, excitedly, their costumes of spooks, vampires and monsters, in anticipation of Hallowe’en. But, in particular, black cats have little cause for celebration. Statistics on black-cat torture, at this time of year, are lacking. Most of the stories are hearsay, and some, no doubt, have been drummed up, simply for the shock value. The conundrum is that the problem can be selffulfilling. Youngsters’ minds are vulnerable, so, when they hear stories of the ritual, Satanic abuse of cats, a spark ignites and a new crime-wave is off and running, with a “stray” black cat being

the target. Ritual sacrifice still exists, and, once in a while, stories crop up in the newspapers. Some may be dismissed as urban legends, but the possibility is that some are true. Please, therefore, consider keeping your cats indoors during Hallowe’en, regardless of their colour, but, especially, if they are black. In addition, you would be wise to keep them locked inside a room in the house, in case they panic and slip out of your door. Even the calmest cat can become upset with the endless doorbell ringing, and youthful voices shouting “Trick or Treat!” Enjoy your Hallowe’en, while

saving your kitties from any unnecessary stress. Happy Hallowe’en! Adoptions We are looking for new homes for two, beautiful, tabby cats, Trinity (9 years) and Vasco (10 years). They like cuddles, playing and curling up for a nap on a warm lap. They are house cats, so are perfect if you have an apartment. Ideally, we would like to home them together, but we realise that this may not be possible. Both are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. As always, cats go on a two-week trial, so you can be sure you have made the right decision before you make a commitment. Full details and pictures of all those currently available can be found on our website w w w. c a t s - w e l f a r e tenerife/pets. If you would like to adopt one, or find out more about our fostering programme, please call - or Whatsapp - Maria on 646629129 (09.0018.00, seven days a week) or message us on our website www.catswelfare -tenerife.com/

contacts. We currently have adorable, fluffy kittens needing loving, permanent homes, of all different colours, ages and sexes. Some are available for viewing in Don Perro pet shop in Las Chafiras, and Vet Express behind Gran Sur. Opening times and maps are on our website (see link above). In the North, kittens can be seen in the Kiwoko pet shop in the El Trompo commercial centre, just outside Puerto de la Cruz. If you are looking for a specific colour - or sex - of kitten, then contact Maria on the above number, to discuss, exactly, what you are looking for. Having a clear out? Can you donate anything to help us to raise funds? Items can be dropped into our San Blas shop, on Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week 10-6pm. (Saturdays 114pm.) Wine and Dine

28th October - 3rd November 2016 HERE in Tenerife, trying a new restaurant for a traditional, Sunday-roast dinner is, sometimes, a bit of a lottery. But, after hearing great reviews from friends, my family and I went to the Coral Bar restaurant, Costa del Silencio, for their Sunday carvery. As we sat at our table on the covered, outside terrace, we were welcomed by Dean, who took our order for drinks. Honey-roast ham, roast beef and turkey-crown were available, and it was possible to choose all three. Whilst we talked amongst ourselves, chef Mark was busy preparing the carvery. A vast array of fresh vegetables was on the menu, including carrots, peas, cabbage,

roast and mashed potatoes, lovely creamy cauliflower-cheese and home-made Yorkshire puddings, which were huge - and filling. Watching all the food being brought out and displayed on the carvery was a sight to behold, which made us even hungrier - and eager to tuck in. We collected our plates and were greeted by Mark, who was very friendly and helpful. We all selected the three varieties of meat, which he hand-carved for us. And what fantastic portions we got! Then came more decisions as to what vegetables to choose.

(You guessed it - we tried them all.) We helped ourselves to home-made gravy, and sauces to complement the meat horseradish, apple sauce and mustard. After loading our plates, we sat down and started to enjoy our feasts. The honey-roast ham was as succulent as could be, and the beef and turkey were flavoursome and juicy. The vegetables were all cooked to perfection, but especially the cauliflower-cheese, which was a meal in itself! Normally, when we serve ourselves, our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, and, to

James’ Place

be honest, I think we overdid the portion sizes. But, after a good fifteen minutes of eating, my wife had gone up for more roast potatoes and Yorkies, and we all had clean plates afterwards. Absolutely sated, we couldn’t even think about desserts, but Dean told us about the home-made puddings on the menu. Summerfruit crumble, chocolatefudge cake, whiteToblerone cheesecake and apple pie were there to tempt us. We couldn’t resist the fudge cake and Toblerone cheesecake, which came with ice cream, or cream. Yet again, we were not

disappointed. Both desserts were amazing - light, tasty and very moreish. I have to say that it was up there with the best Sunday roasts I have eaten on this beautiful island, and that is a bold statement. Coral Bar is so much more than a Sunday carvery. It offers platters to share, daily specials, and, of course, a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. The prices are very competitive, and there is a good selection of wines to complement your meal. Coral Bar can be found in Coral Mar square, Costa del Silencio. The carvery opens at 3pm on Sundays, and booking is recommended. Take a look at their advert on page 40 for a free glass of wine with your roast.

Lifestyle

By Carl from Robot WHO’S ageing, and who’s ageless? Who looks good for her age, and who’s clinging on to the past? There comes a time in every woman’s life when, unless she is one of the lucky few who are over 50 - and suit longer hair - a decision must be made about what’s looking back in the mirror. There’s a saying that I like to use: “I look good for my age, and I’m not trying to look younger”. This works in all aspects of your image; hair, fashion - and even makeup. So, how do you decide if your hair is gaining the attention it deserves?

28th October - 3rd November 2016

AGE - IT’S ONLY A NUMBER

Take a long, hard look in the mirror, and observe all angles of your profile. Scrape back your hair, and, if it’s longer, hold some down to create a medium length. How does your hair make you feel, and what is it saying to others? Yes - I know we should please ourselves when it comes to how we look, but receiving compliments from others gives us the perfect feel-good factor we all deserve. There’s nothing a woman loves more than a compliment, but are there any of these flying around, when it comes to your hair? Longer, grey hair on any woman is ageing. It can drag you down, and

even pull colour away from your face which may drain you. Steelcoloured hair suits very few women, yet men seem to get away with it. Men can carry off the white flecks in their hair, yet women, nearly always, look better with them covered up. It’s all about softening the face, and holding back a few of those years that creep up on us all. Don’t be dragged into old-lady land before your time. As we age, all aspects of ourselves lose colour, and this is why we look older. Replacing it can give us a boost, not only in the hair department, but when we add colour to our clothing, too.

Fashion Boo Boo!! By Carl Pattison YES, I know it’s Hallowe’en, but there’s no need for you guys to go round scaring folk! What with the socks and sandals, and the trouser waists pulled up to the chest, it can all get a little frightening. And it’s not just the more-mature guys who get it wrong. The current trend for tight trousers, that look as though they have come out of a spray can, looks good if you’re slim – but, any bigger than slim can look ridiculous. Extended tee shirts - that look like minidresses - with skinny jeans poking out of the bottom, flatter nobody. It seems that men’s

fashion has gone off the rails a little, and stores are just throwing out trends that they know we will buy. Just because something is in fashion, it doesn’t mean that it’s for everyone. Just because you’re not interested in fashion, does it give you the power to go round scaring people? When you guys get dressed, even if it’s casually,

ask a friend/partner: “How do I look?” and take their opinions on board. Stay away from double patterns ie one on the bottom, and one on the top. This never works. Don’t go for that hip-hop look if you’re over 40, and never wear tight clothing unless you have the figure to show it off. Try to dress ageappropriately, but don’t add on years by dressing in top-totoe “beige”. This is one sure way to definitely look older than you are. If you’re not that interested in fashion, then that’s all good and fine. Just leave it to the Trick-or-Treaters to do the scaring on the streets.

Good old plain soap is the best By Val Sainsbury THESE days, when washing our hands, we are probably using anti-bacterial, liquid soap. It seems to be all the rage, even though our more-mature readers (and I include myself in that category!) wouldn’t have come across it, in years gone by!

But, now, the everpopular soap is being banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Service. This is because there has been no conclusive evidence that this type of soap aids in the killing of germs. It may even cause adverse health effects. The FDA said that products claiming to be anti-bacterial - or anti-microbial - are false, and are no better than regular soap and warm water. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Centre for Drug Evaluation and Research, said: “Some data suggests that anti-bacterial ingredients may do more harm than good.” The ban was, initially, proposed in 2013, but they gave the manufacturers three years to supply evidence of their claims. What

they found was inconclusive, unsatisfactory evidence, and some companies had even ignored, altogether, the request to supply information. Any soap that uses one of a set of 19 particular chemicals must be removed from the marketplace. One of these chemicals is triclosan, which was developed in the 1960s for doctors to use as an anti-microbial. It was, eventually, added to liquid soaps in the 1980s, as a form of protection from germs. Researchers now believe that it could be linked to hormonal disruption, and other adverse health

problems. The problem is that, in order to kill the bacteria, sub-lethal doses of triclosan are added to the soap, but it needs to be in contact with the bacteria for longer than it takes to wash your hands. As a result, this drives up the antibiotic resistance of the germs and bacteria, so they can overcome lower concentrations of it. Obviously, this is a cause for concern with scientists, worldwide, if the sale of these products continues. The FDA has deferred on making a decision for one year, regarding three other potentiallyunsafe chemicals; benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol (PCMX), so that the companies can attempt to develop, and submit, new data. The new ruling from the FDA means that phasing out these antibacterial and antimicrobial soaps with these 19 chemicals must be done by next year. So, check the “ingredients” in those liquid soaps, and maybe stick to washing your hands in the traditional way!

Behind the Mic...

By Val Sainsbury “WHY are you called Mad Mel?” I asked, as I sat in a cafe with Oasis Fm’s craziest DJ. Silly question, really. Within a second of meeting her for the first time, earlier this week, the answer was blatantly obvious! I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but she certainly wasn’t middleof-the-road (in the nicest possible way, of course!) Apart from her zany zest for life, there is another reason Mel Faulkner is in possession of her comical nickname. “About 20 years ago, I used to work in a bar called Chicago’s, who advertised on Oasis Fm every morning,” she recalled. “Who’s on stage tonight?” asked the DJ. “It’s Mel,” the barman replied. “You can’t just call her Mel,” said the DJ. “ We l l , she is a bit

mad, so let’s call her Mad Mel,” replied the barman. “And it’s just stuck,” said Mel. “It was an accident, and just c a m e out of nowhere. I don’t m i n d , because I am mad! “There are no two ways about it - I get on the back of the wallytrolley when it’s moving, and my party-piece is poledancing around a lamp-post! “When I’m sober, I’m mad, but alcohol levels me out a little bit.”

28th October - 3rd November 2016

Mel, 44, originally from the Cornish town of St. Austell, came to live in Tenerife in 1994. When she first arrived on the island, she hit the infamous Veronicas strip every single night. After that, she ended up working in Neighbours Bar, w h i c h was, at that time, the first karaoke venue in Tenerife. W h e n applying for the job, she was asked if she

could sing. An emphatic “No” was the reply, but she was still taken on, regardless. She stayed there for about six weeks. “I couldn’t sing at all, but you can teach yourself,” said Mel, “and I’ve progressed over the years.” Mel started at Oasis Fm in 2003, the year her daughter, Keira, was born. She can also sing, but she won’t get up on stage! “I’ve been working here, on and off, for about 13 years. But I realised that I had a talent for hairdressing, so I left in 2007,” she added. She returned to the station last week for her present, twice-aweek slot, after being off-air for the last three years. “Being an entertainer, you need constant contact with people, which isn’t possible in a studio,” she said. “So, you have to create your own atmosphere. I just imagine that all the listeners are naked! “Also, I pretend that I’m just chatting with one person. When people are listening to the radio, they sometimes think that I am talking to them, personally.” Mel selects all the music she plays. “I’m trying to be a bit more controversial, and go a bit more rocky. I’m a massive Pink Floyd fan,” she said. “I’m very relaxed when I’m on air, and talk about anything I want to. I’m a positive person, and I always enjoy my work.”

For all her quirkiness and extrovert ways, Mel insists there is one thing she would like to get across in this interview. “I am massively into natural therapies, both to prevent - and to cure illness.” she said. “Last week, on air, I brushed on the subject of cannabis oil, and I’ve never known such an overwhelming response. “Apparently, all the Swallows are talking about the oil, since I discussed it on my show,” she enthused. The Swallows are a group of people who “migrate” to Tenerife to escape the winters back in their countries, and then go back home for the summer months. The oil is extracted from the cannabis plant, and she knows, personally, of two people for whom this particular therapy has worked. Her friend, in the UK, used to suffer up to 30 seizures a day. She now takes THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main, mind-altering ingredient found in the plant. After five days, her seizures stopped, and, a month later, she no longer needed her epi-

lepsy medications. “Parkinson’s, psoriasis, heart problems - the range of diseases with which this oil can help is limitless,” she explained. “I’ve arranged for a doctor to come into the studio to be interviewed. “I don’t just want to chat on the phone. I really want to have this mentioned in the paper, so that people can be aware.” Interestingly, there is a cannabis club in Tenerife, from where the drug is dispensed, legally, for recreational and medicinal use. Its location is a well-kept secret, and membership is by invitation only. A fee is charged, based on the required type of membership plan, and a doctor’s prescription is needed for medical consumers. Under Spanish law, people are allowed to smoke cannabis in the club - or at home. “This therapy is something I’m really interested in,” stressed Mel, “and I know that I have a great platform, on the radio, from which to spread the word.”

Mel has another string to her bow: she used to be a full-time instructor at a gym in Las Chafiras. “The owner and I had an agreement,” she said. “There was a spare room at the gym, and I turned it into a hairdressing salon. “I’d teach keep-fit classes in the mornings and evenings, and my rent, taxes, etc, were taken care of by the owner.” Unfortunately, she ripped a calf muscle really badly, and had to teach Zumba and spinning classes wearing stilettos, to keep her foot elevated! When the gym moved to another location, she decided to turn a bedroom in her home into a salon. She limits her customer-base to friends and family. She now spends one day a week hairdressing. She’s on air every Monday and Tuesday, from 3-6pm, and is resident in the Star Bar six nights a week.

Advertorial

1) EU Regulation 650/2012 This affects the inheritance law, which applies to the estates of people who die after 17th August 2015. Basically, pursuant to Article 21 of the Regulation, as from August 2015, the applicable law to the estate of a EU national (other than those residents in those countries listed above) is the law of the country of their residency. A UK national resident in Spain would, therefore, have Spanish law applied to his/her estate. Under Spanish law (as applied to Spaniards), testators must leave two-thirds of their estate to their children. Indeed, even the parents of the deceased are obligatory heirs to one-third of the estate if there are no children. Any residents of Spain, who die intestate, will have Spanish intestacy rules applied to their estate, regardless of their nationality. This means that the spouse will not inherit the whole estate, if there are living children, or parents, of the deceased. However, Article 22 allows people who are national of one European State - but resident in another - to elect to have their national law applied to their estates. For UK nationals, this means much more flexibility in the beneficiaries whom they can choose. The most logical document to use to

28th October - 3rd November 2016

You should all review your wills this year…

declare this election would be in a Will, and article 27 would allow a declaration in a Spanish form Will that “English” law applies. Article 83 provides for transitional provisions. The most important of these, under Art 83.4, means that if people made a Will before 17th August 2015, which was compliant with the law the testator could have chosen (i.e. their national law), then they will be deemed to have elected this law to apply to their estate. This means it is not likely to be necessary, in most cases, for clients to amend their wills for Spanish assets. However, this Article doesn’t apply to wills made after August 2015. So any will made from that date needs to have the declaration of appli-

cability of national law, in order for that law to be applied to the estate. 2) Commission v Spain Case C-127/12 The European Court of Justice, on 3rd September 2014, declared that the Spanish inheritance-tax system was unlawful. It held that the system of treating residents differently from non-residents, when it comes to inheritance tax, was discriminatory and contrary to European law. Most inheritance-tax allowances in Spain are regional. Previously, these allowances were applied only when both the deceased and the beneficiaries were officially residents in Spain. In the case of residents, the tax rules of that particular region applied. If either the deceased or the beneficiary were non-resident, then the State inheritance-tax rules applied. This included cases where Spanish residents received an inheritance from outside Spain. This meant that non-resident beneficiaries often paid much more inheritance tax than residents would have done. There is a vast difference between the state

inheritance-tax rules and the regional allowances. Several regions - including the Canary Islands, Madrid, the Balearics, Valencia and Murcia - have virtually no inheritance tax between spouses, or between parents and children. Others, principally those with socialist administrations, have lessgenerous allowances. Nevertheless, with professional advice, the reductions can be utilised to lower significantly, or to eliminate, the inheritance-tax burden. In the Official State Bulletin (BOE), on 28th November 2014, changes have been made to the existing inheritance tax law (Ley 29/1987, of December 18th 1987). As from 1st January 2015, the same allowances and deductions which apply to residents, apply to the inheritances where either the deceased or beneficiaries were nonresident, and also to the inheritance (by residents) of assets located outside Spain. The allowance applied is that of the autonomous region, where the deceased had the majority of his/her assets. This is very good, even

for residents, if one or more of their children or grandchildren - who are beneficiaries in their will - is a non-resident of Spain. It means that, in many cases, wills can be restructured to reduce, or eliminate, Spanish succession tax. Sadly, it does not apply to residents of non-EU, countries, regardless of nationality. Zapelin’s Innovation Award ZAPELIN, the Adeje company (R&D division born through Direct Telecom), which supplies a comprehensive TV service to hotels and community apartments, has won the Award for Innovation at the prestigious 10th annual Canary Islands Emprendedor XXI event.

A presentation ceremony, held at Tenerife Cabildo’s headquarters in Santa

Cruz was conducted by Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canarian Government. Mike Broeckaert, who, with company co-founder Ubaldo Porcheddu, received the award, said: “It’s an idea that could only have been born in the Canaries, but can be applied worldwide.” Zapelin fills establishments with innovative equipment that not only offers a combination of satellite channels, source channels IPTV (Internet TV) to exit DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) format, but also channels streaming directly to wireless devices without using internet.

This innovative idea allows hotels and complexes to enjoy IPTV channels on their TV without the need for Internet or Set Top Boxes in each room or home. Mike who is Belgian, was raised in Tenerife, and Ubaldo, Italian, has spent seven years on the Island, and they began this project just three years ago. From their Adeje headquarters, the pair worked for some 50 hotel establishments, mainly from the

Canary Islands and the peninsula, and their plan is to service over 10,000 hotel TV screens before the end of 2016. But their product, which allows great savings for hotels, and offers solutions that enhance the quality of the services they offer guests, has actually generated great interest worldwide. Ubaldo said: “Without having done any international marketing campaigns, we have received interest from

companies and establishments in the Caribbean, Nigeria, Morocco, Australia and Argentina.” This Emprendedor Award is promoted by La Caixa bank, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, through Enisa. Its objective is “to identify, recognise and support companies with greater growth and potential of Spain and in the Canaries”. The group also organises the Canarian Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI) of the Canarian Government. The XXI Emprendedor Award

The tide is turning UNTIL recently, it looked as though both divisions in the Direct Telecom pool league would be easy to predict in terms of the champions. But results have started to turn.

Division Two will be tight, and, with the chasing pack having games in hand, current Division One Gaffers A need to start looking over their shoulders. Their home game against Rewind A, which on paper should have been a straight-forward win for the defending champions, proved to be a difficult night at the table. It was all-square at the end of the first session, Rewind A then picked off a couple of frames to take the lead, only for the home side to hit back with the next two to level the match. The final session had a familiar look as the visitors again struck first for a 6-4 advantage, guaranteeing a draw. But could they achieve what no one else has this season and take the win? The answer was No as Gaffers A dug deep and took the final frames to draw. With Palms A not in action, Tenerife Hammers A took full advantage

and moved back into second place. They have been off-form lately, and a trip to face Terrace Roosters on Amarilla Golf could have been tricky. But the Hammers rolled back the seasons with a solid performance. They took the early frames and gave the Roosters no chance. And before they could blink, it was over as a contest, the away team winning 10-2. Phoenix Potters moved into fourth spot, trading places with Dreamers A, whom they defeated in Los Abrigos. It was a close game during the opening frames, the score poised at 2-2. Dreamers then took the lead, but Potters fought back, and, once they had their noses in front, saw the game out in style. Pod put in a man-ofthe-match performance with three frames. Palms Elite welcomed Treehouse A to Torviscas, with both teams being tipped to do well this season, so it was going to be an interesting clash. As with so many matches in this division, it started cagey, with the first four frames shared, as were the next four. The home took the lead when Dan beat Jay, only for Scott to come back and beat Harry, to level again. It appeared to be heading for a draw, but Wayne and Graeme

found a little bit extra in the tank to beat Mark and Paul respectively, giving Palms Elite the narrowest of wins. Exiles A were up against Bluebell A in Silencio with both teams in buoyant mood after wins the week before. But, as ever, Exiles A proved to be tough opponents at home. Bluebell couldn’t repeat last week’s form and soon found themselves behind, despite a spirited performance, and Exiles A went on to take the

76

-14 13

match comfortably. It is getting tight at the summit of Division Two, with just five points separating the top half of the table. Picasso’s A, early favourites and current leaders, thought they had slipped up until the results below them proved vital. They had a home tie against Palm Rebels as they looked for three more points. But the Rebels had other ideas as the first frames finished 2-2. The visitors took heart from this solid start and Andy, Mark and Mick took their next frames to put Rebels 5-3 ahead and their sights set on a win. But Picasso’s reversed the final session, with wins from Alex, Stevie and Bran clinching a draw. With the leaders dropping points, the chasing pack had a chance to move above them. First up were James Hammers C, who faced Exiles B down in La Caleta. In recent times, Hammers C have used a few get-out-of-jail cards to take points, and this

looked like another of those weeks as they went 3-1 down. They stopped the rot in the middle section with honours even, but knew they had a hill to climb at 5-3 behind. Up stepped captain Tony Macaroni, but he was chinned by Tomas - and his team were really up against it. James rallied and took the next. But Jeff and Matt, from Exiles B, put in good performances, taking the last two frames and all three points. That left James Hammers C level on points at the top, but in third spot on frame difference. Another team with a chance to go clear at the top were Yates Bar, who were down in Puerto Colon facing Hoppys A. Again, there was a close start, with the scores at 2-2. But Yates Bar found an extra gear with Lee, Terry and Dan rattling off the next frames to take a two-frame lead. They needed two more from the final session to go clear at the top, but Hoppys A struck back. Kev, Roly and Jason were the stars of the night as they all grabbed wins, which were enough for the

draw and points shared. And that means we now have a three-way tie at the top! Bluebell B and The Crown both moved to within striking distance of the top three by picking up wins. Bluebell B were at home against Splash Bar, and it will come as no surprise that early frames were traded evenly. The home side cause middle-section damage as Keith, Mal and Grant all won, meaning Splash Bar needed all four final frames for victory. Steve won the first frame for Splash Bar and the home team looked nervy. But they had no need to because Craig and Mal won their frames and the points. The Crown picked up their points on the road as they played out a routine win over Treehouse B. They are certainly the team to watch because they have games in hand over the teams above them. Obviously, they don’t count as points on the board until they are won. But a couple of strong performances from The Crown and they’ll be right back in the title mix.

Shar can Playgirl! DESPITE her team propping up the whole league as they chase a record 28th wooden spoon, and despite their heavy defeat by Picassos, Playgirls' boss lady Shar will certainly have enjoyed her darts last Friday because she knocked in her first maximum. Way to go girl! Sadly, though, the Playgirls mustered just a single point from Picassos who remain in striking distance of top spot, with games in hand. The Tavern, who hold that Division 2 top spot, put in another strong showing as they dropped just one point at Nauta Nomads. Emerald Lounge went back into third place, although they had to win the trebles leg to tie at Bar Leones, while Waterfall won their trebles leg to seal victory over Marilyns A. But all was not lost for Marilyns A because

Wolfy checked out on 152, which is the highest in the section this term. Not so good for Palms Pool Bar, though. They were holding on to the league's last unbeaten record, only to come unstuck by the odd point at Legends. And likewise Bar 180. They went right off the rails and slumped to a 6-2 defeat against Pas O Nadas B. Clouseaus just edged out Marilyns B, while another minor upset came at Rood, who shipped six points to Naughty Nautas. And quirky results are not just confined to Division 2, either. Division 1 leaders Scruffy Macs were turned over by Exiles, who are a full eight places and 30 points behind them! The three points they earned, however, took them above the outof-action Pas O Nadas A, who now have a game in hand. During the last week, sadly,

we have had to say farewell to the Sandys International team. All points won against them have been removed, which is why Gaffers now appear in seventh place. So their 5-3 victory over third-placed The Pub isn't much of a

surprise, although Grizzly might say otherwise! Elsewhere, Spear Chuckers put six past Sandys Reborn, and Fluff drank water all night to help his team to a fine 7-1 win at Palms Sports Bar. Yeah, right!

Southport swimmers making such a splash SOUTHPORT Swimming Club, now in their seventh year, are the most regular of sports groups tempted to Tenerife by the superb facilities of Arona’s 50-metre pool at Los Cristianos.

The trips, which have evolved over the years, now include parents as well as competitors from the 120 who use the Lancashire pool regularly. Head coach Mike Patrickson said. “It started when I was over

on holiday and saw the 50-metre outdoor pool. “We got in touch with pool manager Suzanne Garcia, and, along with her staff, they have been wonderful, looking after all our needs. “We have 74 club members and 28 swimmers, aged from 12-18, are over here now. Our club is on the border of Lancashire and Merseyside, where they have different halfterm weeks, so we’ve had quite a spread of flights.” He added: “This year, we included a couple of European champions Abbey Jones and Holly Hibbott, both 17, and it has been a good year

for the club. We got 16 swimmers through to the British Nationals, which is pretty impressive for a town.”

As for the weather, Mike said: “ It’s perfect for us - even this week’s heavy didn’t disrupt us. The pool is a top facility

and they even arrange for our older swimmers to use the nearby gym. “Having everyone together and away from

the distractions of home makes them focus more, and we look forward to our visit here every year.”

CD Tenerife need a brake By Colin Kirby

A SEVENTH game without a win, and CD Tenerife are a runaway train heading for relegation. Coach Pep Marti is under pressure, with time running out before a new driver is brought in.

This defeat was littered with mistakes, and the attack was blunt in front of goal. And, with three of the next four games at home and CDT now in the drop-zone, the players will have to scrap for points. The accusation is that first-time coach Pepe Marti does not have the experience or tactics to lift his players. But the problem is much deeper than that, The squad need revamping! Vitolo and Aitor in midfield are in the twilight of their careers, and the forwards are poor. Choco Lozano has forgotten where the goal is, and strike partner Jouini, though good with his head, trips over his own legs. Two other loan arrivals, Aaron and Amath, drift out of the game too often, and Director of Football Serrano has an appalling record for signing duds. All that aside, it’s the present that matters, but clubs will always go for short-term solutions. They say you’re only as good as your last game … oh

dear, that´s worrying. There are some bright spots, however. Keeper Dani Hernandez started this game with a full-stretch, finger-tip save, and kept up that form throughout. Captain Suso, who had a mid-week, training bust-up with the coach, still ran through brick walls and cut in from his right-wing slot to try to force more chances. Former Swansea forward Michu brought the best out of Dani with a low shot, and

IT’S hard to imagine now, but in a few months you’ll be fed-up with the sight of food - and tired of that TV armchair.

So why not pre plan your 2017 resolution by signing up for a 5km New Year’s Eve run? The first San Silvestre will be clinging on to 2016 with a 3pm afternoon run from Playa de Las Americas,

along the Golden Mile. Organisers are already taking bookings, and, until 4th December, it will cost you eight euros. After that, and before the 28th December cut-off date, it will cost 10 euros. German came close with a strong header from an Aaron cross. But the home side took a 30th-minute lead through Linares after Rocha found him in acres of space. That was the good and the bad … now for the ugly! The last five minutes of the first half was reduced to school-playground level, both sets of players trying to outdo each other with feigned injuries. It´s one of my pet hates: the cupped hands over the face, the squirming in mock agony and the miraculous recovery once the free-kick has been won. It was a relief when the ref blew for the break, I fell screaming to the floor three times at half-time because their silliness was so infectious. Anyway, back to the game, Suso took on two defenders to win a corner, and made another good chance that Aitor pumped high into the air. Choco had another feeble shot at goal, and Inaki did well to make an opening before putting the ball

in the side-netting. Tenerife then ran out of steam and seemed resigned to defeat. Raul went off injured, and sub Omar was wasted for the second game running as a full-back. There was still time to concede another

soft goal. A ball in from the left found Linares in front of a spread defence. German committed the modern footballer’s sin of shaping up for a tackle with his hands behind his back. In theory, it avoids

hand-balls, but in practice it upsets a player’s balance. Guess what? German slipped to give Linares a free strike to make it 2-0. Rayo Vallecano come calling tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm. Here’s hoping!

Water-ski racers Ramos twins balanced to thrill at the double Ladies Football

JUST whizzing along behind a speed boat isn’t enough for some daredevils, they need to compete against likeminded adrenaline junkies around a circuit just off the coast.

That’s why top teams will flock to the Tenerife International Open at Playa San Juan next weekend. The top two female racers in the European F1 category, Austrian sisters Sabine and Kathrin Ortliebare among the stars drawn to the fifth staging of the competition in Tenerife. It’s not just about the brave souls at the end of the pulling rope … the modern sport is a team effort with the driver, and an observer radioing instructions to the racer. It helps them negotiate the fastest line around the course, avoid turbulence, the markers

- and any unexpected obstacles. The British team of skier Nadia Jay Mersey, driver Barry Clapson, and observer Simon Smith, have experience of Tenerife waters and will be easy to spot in boat No. 99 Kraken, which has been loaned to them by

its Tenerife owners. Despite being a fiercelycontested sport, there is a great family feel to the pits area, and sharing equipment and knowledge is commonplace. The French team are another example. Laurent Pradal will ski, Laurent Gimenez will

swap his normal driver’s role to observe, and they will borrow a driver, Jose Martin, from the 4kickx Sofican team. Each day’s racing, on 29th and 30th October, is scheduled from 10.30am to 1pm, and there will also be exhibitions. The whole event is free to watch.

TWIN Spanish footballers Noella and Natalia Ramos, who play for Egatesa Granadilla ladies, returned from the FIFA Under-17 World Championship in Jordan with bronze medals after Spain’s third-place finish.

They beat Venezuela 4-0 in the losing semifinalists play-off, and Noella also lifted the

Golden Glove for being voted the tournament’s Best Keeper. There was no league game for them last weekend, but the girls were mobbed at Tenerife airport on their return as they showed off their rewards from a great adventure. This Sunday sees the first derby featuring two Tenerife teams in the Spanish Primera League. Tacuense host Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife at Taco, a suburb of Santa Cruz. Kick-off is at noon, and TV Canaria will be showing the whole game live.

Full English fills gap WHEN new Lithuanian guard Marius Grigonis injured his ankle in the thumping 57-85 European Champions League opener at Cibona Zagreb, Iberostar Tenerife turned to an old favourite for cover. Carl English played

for Tenerife in 2014 and jumped at the chance to fill in for up to three weeks. The 35-year-old Canadian international, who has been in demand all over the world, started this year In the Puerto Rico league. But despite his

Italians’ rally glory SIMONE Faggioli, the nine-time European mountain champion, added the Arona-La Escalona rally title to his collection in his Norma M20 FC last Saturday. It was a clean sweep for the Italians because Marcario Paride was

impressive return, scoring 13 points, Tenerife were shaded out 72-73 by visiting Unicaja Malaga, which spoiled their 100% winning start to the season. The Sunday lunchtime tip-off brought a bumper crowd of 4,363, but they couldn’t quite carry their heroes across the winning line. Two points adrift going into the final quarter, Tenerife had high hopes. But American Jamar Smith, the outstanding player on court, inspired his squad with 29 points. For Tenerife, Aaron Doornekamp was good value as always, scoring

13 points, and Davin White added his 12 points to the home tally. Moving on to Wednesday evening, Tenerife blitzed Montenegro’s KK Mornar 103-57 in the European Champions League. Much of the damage was done in a stunning first quarter. Mornar, who looked as though they had just stepped off the plane, made terrible unforced errors and were punished 29-7. The Montenegro side rallied a bit but were always second-best, and English kept up his blistering form with 22 points, followed closely by White, on 15.

Marino back on top Union Viera 0 CD Marino 1 CD MARINO, showing great character, followed two drawn home games with a 1-0 win at Union Viera on Saturday to reclaim their top spot, level with Atletico Las Palmas on 20 points. And, with the pack so close at the top of the Tercera Division Group 12, every point is vital in the promotion chase.

It was a tight game and Marino had to wait until 54 minutes to make the breakthrough. Facundo Valiente supplied a pass from the right for Fran Alonso to bury the ball in the back of the Gran Canarian net. Las Zocas are the visitors to Playa de Las Americas this Sunday, with a Noon kick-off.
