ANOTHER HOSPITAL DISASTER

BUILDING company Sacyr, after being sacked from the new South Hospital site in El Mojon, Arona, now face a breach-of-contract court case by the Canarian Health Department. The Spanish firm downed tools after losing a demand to be paid more money, having under-priced its initial, tender-winning bid. Continued on Page 3

Hospital builders sacked

Continued from Front The prestigious Spanish, multi-national organisation, one of the country’s largest construction firms, was contracted to build the hospital’s final stages, Phase III, comprising four operating rooms, three labour-anddelivery rooms, and a new ward, after a more -than-attractive offer to the Canarian Government’s Health Department. The Department was seeking bids of nearly 10½m euros for the work, to complete the hospital’s full range of facilities, hopefully, in 30 months. But Sacyr’s bid just under 8m euros, and its pledge to finish the work in 19 months clinched the deal. The new project, which began at the end of June, should have been completed by March 2018. Yet builders stopped work several weeks ago after Sacyr called for an increased budget. However, the contract

was terminated after “unsuccessful” negotiations, in which the Health Department (Sanidad) stuck strictly to the original, legallysigned deal. Sacyr has admitted that its own costing calculations were incorrect, adding that it would have been impossible to carry out the work for the agreed sum, “not even by making adjustments in the materials and design”. The alternative, said the company, would be to abandon the job, and that’s exactly what it has done. “There has been no work here for weeks,” said a regular visitor to the complex, also known now as El Mojón Hospital del Sur. And the Canarian health authority appears to have a strong, breach-ofcontract case. Lawyers from several local administrations have explained that, should Sacyr not comply

with the contract, “in practice, it risks paying compensation to the Health Ministry”. A spokesman added: “It could exceed half-amillion euros because of the damage caused by the company not complying with the work contract. “That had been established, and the terms and the amount tendered by Sacyr allowed the firm to win the competition, which was contested by several other companies. “These companies lost the tender because they were not able to compete with the offer from this company, which has great prestige and weight within the world of construction.” Rosa Dávila, the Canarian Government’s Finance Minister, is fully behind Health Minister Jesus Morera, saying: “The decision to terminate the contract is correct because we cannot tolerate this behaviour.

“The priority is to finish building the hospital, but we will not be blackmailed. Sacyr did not act ethically with the rest of the companies that went to tender.” And the Finance Minister supports the building work going to tender again. “It can be done quickly, so that we do not extend the deadline,” she said. “Companies should be fined for such bad practice, and, I cannot understand how, months after winning tender, the company has this problem, which affects us all.” The hospital, first mooted more than two decades ago to alleviate pressure on the “social” hospital in Santa Cruz, has had nothing but ill luck since the work begun. Project after project has been abandoned for one reason or another. Two years ago, however, all seemed rosy at the El Mojon site, and the hospital actually

began operating, with service departments such as Out-patients, Rehabilitation and Radiology opening in 2014. On 8th July this year, it opened “officially”, and in late August came the first 49 hospital beds for acute, shortstay patients, along with the intensive-care activity. This relieved some of the burden on the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (known commonly as the Candelaria hospital). It also eased the problem of patients having to travel to Santa Cruz for treatment. South Hospital had also expanded its range of medical specialities and diagnostic functional tests, enhancing the number of consultations. The immediate result was a sharp decline in the number of patients using Tenerife’s main Santa Cruz hospital for non-private patients.

Official figures showed that from April 2015 to April 2016, the South Hospital had more than 157,000 physician visits and conducted 27,000 test and procedures. In the Day Hospital, there were 1,801 treatments for patients who would normally have had to travel to Santa Cruz. According to the Health Ministry, patients in the South received 82,484 physiotherapy sessions. And there were impressive numbers of those using the facilities for specialised medical care in the field of Mental Health, with almost 23,000 consultations. Everything looked so rosy for the new hospital those handful of weeks ago. Now, though, a big question mark hangs over the final completion date of what must surely be the most important building in the South.

Sick-claim Brits facing hotel ban A RISE in fake sickness claims by tourists, hitting Tenerife and mainland Spain, could lead to hotels banning Brits, who seem to be the prime target for the socalled “Claims Clinic” posse.

Canarian Weekly exposed the mass of phony claims in Tenerife in September, and, apparently, they are still prolific - on the mainland, at least. Tourists are said to be

THE Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil have identified 440 organised crime groups operating in the country, as part of a 3,600-strong network throughout the European Union.

At least 10 of these are classified as “high intensity” because they have been operating for more than three years. They have at least 20 members - the average is 11-20 individuals - and have one main area of activity. But they also work in other related areas and are multi-national, sometimes contracting out their services to other gangs. Typically, these criminals will have created legitimate front companies, through which to launder their ill-gotten gains. Last week, Spanish police arrested a businessman on the island of Mallorca, who had a construction company and a business managing slot machines. He was married and his children went to private schools. And, for the last three years, he had been smuggling some 150kg of cocaine

claiming compensation from hotels after, allegedly, saying they have been suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea especially. A growing number of hotels in the Costa del Sol, Valencia, Costa Blanca and Benidorm have now warned that they could be banned from staying there. Yet there is nothing illegal in companies suggesting to holidaymakers that they are entitled to ask for compensation if they have been ill. And that they will handle any claim for them. Nuria Montes, from Spain’s hoteliers

association HOSBEC, said: “The number of claims has increased significantly since the start of this year, when the ‘claims farm’ started their campaign to attract British tourists coming through tour operators. “This is not happening only in Spain similar situations are occurring in Greece and Cyprus, and also in the Caribbean. “We estimate that the number of claims may be around 10,000 this year so far, reflecting a significant increase compared with previous years. “We have estimated that the economic

impact on the Spanish hotel industry will be around 60m euros. In any case, the hotel industry has to bear the full cost.” The “claim” service seemed at first to be like a bit of good, oldfashioned ambulancechasing. And the promotional use of ambulance style vehicles this summer, at least over here, was a cheeky touch. The premise was simple: if you have been ill on holiday and stayed in a hotel, you can give your details to a “consultant”, who will pass them on to a legal team in the UK. The team then

launches a claim for compensation, and takes a percentage of any money paid out on a “no-win, no-fee” basis. While it was relatively new to Tenerife this summer, the practice had been in place on the mainland, and in Mallorca, for a couple of years. It is understood that this type of claim originated in the Caribbean a decade ago. Richard Conroy, founder of travel illness company SickHoliday. com, worries that the fake cash-grabs will undermine legitimate investigations, in which a genuine holiday

sickness can lead to a long-term disease. “Fraudulent holiday sickness claims are on the rise - we turn down four or five cases we feel are bogus each week ourselves,” he said. “The only thing this trend will do is push up the cost of holidays by around 10%, while punishing those who have genuine grievances with tour operators. “We estimate that there are around 25,000 fraudulent claims for holiday sickness per year. Criminal charges need to be brought, and, until that happens, we all suffer.”

Spain is awash, with internet crime gangs

on to the Balearic island each year, subcontracting distribution to local gypsy families. In total, seven people were arrested. Crime is a multimillion dollar business in Europe and still growing, thanks to the internet. “These types of arrangements normally last around three years and tend to operate in big cities or tourist destinations, where their activities do not stand out,” say police, adding that these gangs work in networks often set up in prison. The majority of

criminal gangs operating in Spain are dealing in drugs, say police: “Colombians, cocaine; Moroccans, hashish; the Turks, heroin,” says one officer. Fraud is another activity, along with money-laundering, followed by peopletrafficking, prostitution, burglary and theft of luxury cars. Again, some nationalities specialise in certain activities. The same source reveals: “Colombians, drugs and jewellery; Russians and Georgians, burglary and luxury cars, along with money-laundering; the

Chinese, prostitution and people-trafficking; Pakistanis and Syrians, falsification of documents; Bulgarians, weapons…” Since 2014, when Spain set up CITCO, the Intelligence Centre against Terrorism and Organised Crime, around 250 connections have been made, linking organised crime and terrorism. “Structures are changing,” says a police source. “There are no more leaders. There are cells, flexible groups that assign people particular responsibilities, and that are active in different markets to keep their options open.” Spain’s police believe the first criminal groups to operate in this were offshoots of the Italian mafia, who moved here in the Seventies as Spain’s economy began opening up. Typically, these gangs will have created legitimate front companies. Since then, Italy’s four main mafias, the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, the Ndrangheta from Calabria, the Neapoli-

tan Camorra, and the Sacra Corona Unita, from Puglia, have all established a strong presence in Spain. Between 1999 and 2009, one-third of all arrests of mafia members took place in Spain. And Italian mafias also benefited from Spain’s construction boom. The Italian authorities calculate that it developed the equivalent of some 50km of Spanish coastline. Following in the footsteps of the Italians, as Spain became an important logistics and distribution point for drugs shipments into the rest of Europe (and an easy place to launder money), Turkish criminal gangs moved here during the Eighties, supplying drugs and weapons. They were soon followed by the Colombian drug cartels, with Spain becoming the main entry point for cocaine into Europe. Since then, say police, the cartels have managed to find other countries in Europe through which to ship

drugs. In recent years, Irish criminal gangs have also begun operating from Spain’s Costa del Sol, shipping weapons and drugs throughout Europe. Europol director Rob Wainwright describes organised crime as a “multi-million dollar business in Europe and still growing, thanks to the internet and mobile technologies, the proliferation of clandestine global routes and the opportunities the global economic crisis offers. All this has contributed to the creation of a greater threat.” Spain also faces a threat from the Colombian peace process, say some experts. “There are between 8,000 and 12,000 former guerrillas who will have no work if the peace process goes ahead,” says one expert. Others point to the growing presence in Spain of members of the Mexican cartels, which are increasing their shipments into this country.

Arona bets on Vegas THE 2017 Los Cristianos Carnival organisers will base their main theme of Las Vegas, with all its casino magic, music, luxury and fun.

That’s the vision designer Luis Marrero has brought to life with next year’s poster, with all the razzle-dazzle that goes with the Vegas image. The South Carnival, which last year enticed more than 25,000 people to its parade, will be held from 17-27th March next year. Key dates include: Saturday, 18th March: Opening Cabalgata Parade, from Veronicas in Las Americas to Compostela Beach. Sunday, 26th: Showpiece Coso parade, from Paloma Beach to Los Cristianos Cultural Centre. Monday, 27th: Grand finale, Burial of the Sardine. Funeral.

In between these events, there will be nightly music on the showground stage, by the Valdes Centre, plus usual favourites such as the elections of the Carnival Queen, and Drag Queen.

Arona officials will travel to the state of Nevada early in 2017 and, although little has been unveiled so far, Los Cristianos will surely be full of light, showgirls, magicians … and even Elvis and Frank Sinatra

impersonators. Work is already underway on the regular, outrageous costumes, so see what you can come up with. Just remember, what happens in Vegas stays in … Los Cristianos!

Loads of roads to be improved

TENERIFE Cabildo is currently investing 10 million euros to improve roads here in the South, which are used by thousands of vehicles daily. And there’s more money to come next year!

Four of the 10 roads highlighted are out to tender, another four have been won and first-phase work has already started on the remaining two. The first phase has an initial investment of 5.4m and the second phase, mainly the TF-1 stretch between Guaza and Los Cristianos, which carries 75,000 vehicles daily, will begin before the end of the year. A tender is still pending for the

link between Las Chafiras and Oroteanda because it incorporates a third lane to the TF-1. The Cabildo has started work on the Las Chafiras roundabout, in the Llano de Camello area, as well channelling the Guaza barranco and improving the main road passing Arico. Work will also start on the Guargacho road shortly, as well on the main road to Arona and the link to El Fraile. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “Fixing the state of the roads is a priority because it sorts a problem that affects everyone.” He also said the South would benefit next year, thanks to a further 12m-euro investment in road improvements.

Not-so-super moon! WEREWOLFS were that other parts of the

When it comes to the crunch… LORO Parque, voted Europe’s best zoo by Tripadvisor, houses three of the animals featuring the most powerful bites on earth.

They are the North American alligator, the South America jaguar and, surprising, the “palm tree” cockatoo, which lives in the jungles of New Guinea, and Oceania, Northern Australia. The jaguars have butcher’s teeth, capable of tearing the flesh with ease, while alligators can destroy their prey in a shocking way, thanks to a powerful mouth

with 80-82 teeth. And the palm cockatoo can break the hardest seeds in the world in a unique way, managing to find the exact point to break one of the the toughest of all - the macadamia nut. Interacting with jaguars or alligators is practically impossible because the risk of a serious bite is extremely high. But the palm tree cockatoo is able to break rock-hard seeds, and also have that delicate touch when coming into contact with the fingers of its handler. The American alligators are the largest reptiles in North America, weighing up to 450km and growing

as long as 3.5 metres. They feed twice a week, scoffing almost 15kg of meat in the summer. In winter, their metabolism slows down and they cut back to eating just eat 8kg a week. Their staple diet is chicken, rabbit, trout and red meat. Loro Parque has a heating system in the sand and in the water of their show area, because alligators need warmth, and this guarantees them an ideal temperature. Jaguars, the largest felines in South America, are the thirdlargest in the world, after the tiger and the lion. They have one of the strongest jaws,

capable of breaking a tortoise shell. Loro Parque’s jaguar, “Negra” is usually fed with veal, chicken, ribs, cow bones and fish. There are a couple of palm tree cockatoos in Loro Parque, and several in the La Vera breeding station, just a couple of miles from the zoo. It is regarded as the mecca of breeding centres worldwide, housing the largest genetic reserve of species and sub-species of parrots. These cockatoos can break steel as dense as 3.5mm, and they are capable of trashing an entire bathroom, using their beak, in minutes.

New Beril beach revamp on way EL BERIL, a swimming- cumleisure area next to Costa Adeje’s El Duque beach, is to be given a huge, twomillion-euro facelift, with a sandy stretch covering about 14,000sq/m.

Work on the site, alongside Hotel Bahia del Duque, will include the crushing of existing rocks and pebbles to form enough natural material to complete the make-over for public use. The most laborious task for Adeje Council workers will be the actual pounding of 51,000cu/m of stony material, to create sand

for the beach itself. It will have two regular accesses, and another three for the disabled, with ramps of more than two metres wide already approved. The beach will also be equipped with wooden walkways and accessible showers.

And, given the importance of environmental balance, vegetation will be grown on the walls and in planters to coincide with the marine environment, while respecting the rest of the surrounding area. Ermitas Moreira

García and Carmen Rosa González García Cabrera, respective Councillors for Tourism and Municipal Works, stress that their council is responding to the demands of Costa Adeje as a holiday destination.

caught in mid-transformation and sore necks were in plentiful supply as people in Tenerife craned to see the Supermoon on Monday. Alas a combination of rain and cloud obscured much of the satellite´s night of glory. When it did pop through the clouds, especially in the early hours of Tuesday, it impressed with its brightness and size. But it wasn’t the big show we were told to expect, or

The gang, all from the Ukraine, are believed to have shifted as many as 6,000 Ukrainians in total, using false passports, say officers. They hunted down the people-smugglers, thanks to witness statements from 56 of the migrants. They had been arrested carrying false documents at several Spanish airports,

including Malaga, Barcelona, Murcia and Bilbao. A further 50 people were also held in France, Belgium, Ukraine and Poland, including some of the alleged gangleaders. The migrants were tricked by a man-anddaughter team, They set up a bogus travel agency, offering a package deal which included ID documents, flight tickets and accommodation. Cheers again, to Adeje tap water ADEJE tap water has again been passed 100% safe for drinking by the Municipal Laboratory in its annual report for 2015.

The report said: “All analysed samples of the different supply networks of the municipality are obtained, and, in parallel, the qualification of the water is suitable for consumption.” Adeje was the first municipality in Tenerife to provide drinkable tap water, and Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo added: “Improvements in supply, investments in facilities, and more rigorous measures in control and monitoring, has made a significant contribution to the evolution and progress of the water quality.” Some, 226 samples

were tested, of which 44.75% were taken in private homes, and the remaining 55.25% from those public buildings or commercial activities, which do not have their own supply. The report also details that 67.90% of the Adeje population is supplied with water derived from dams, galleries and the quantity treated by desalination. Another supply, to 32.10% of the population, comes from galleries and dams exclusively. In total, the Adeje Municipal Laboratory made 229 analyses of the consumer’s tap water. Amada Trujillo reiterates: “We will continue relying on the controlling maintenance and improvement of tap water, which enhances resources, as a means of guaranteeing the preservation of our residents’ health, as far as water is concerned.”

Child-abuse suspects are nabbed by police A WIDESPREAD group of men, including one from Tenerife, have been arrested in Spain on suspicion of swapping online photos of severe child abuse.

The 56 suspects, uncovered in a probe involving more than 150 police officers, were said to be sharing the images, including babies, during a nationwide crackdown on child pornography. The men, mostly Spanish and aged between 40-60, were accused of “distributing

over the internet, images of extreme cruelty involving very young minors”. Most of the children are believed to be younger than 10, and, said Luis Garcia Pascual, who led the investigation: “In many

cases, there are even babies subjected to serious abuse, including torture.” In addition to the police numbers involved, 46 investigating magistrates took part in the operation. Around 170 computer

hard-drives, together with 614 CDs and DVDs, were found to contain child pornography. Two revolvers, one of them with a modified cannon, were also discussed in one of the searches made in Murcia. The investigators are continuing to carry out a thorough examination of the overwhelming volume of computer equipment, used to determine possible sexual abuse of children, as well as producing paedophile material, or possible connections with other paedophiles or pederasts - men who engage in sexual activities young boys who interact on the net.

El Gordo spreads millions of wishes PRODDING the Christmas pudding for a sixpence is nowhere near as exciting as playing Spain’s gigantic state lottery, El Gordo (the fat one).

All white on the night THERE has never been a better time to enjoy La Laguna than when its spectacular, annual celebration Noche En Blanco (white night) takes place.

This year. It is being held next Saturday 26th Nov), when shops throw open their doors until 3am and the streets are packed with music and art, as well as shoppers. It all starts at 11am, with lots of family activities, such as bouncy castles, climbing walls, and face-painting, and it gathers pace through the day with different

zones for music, dance, theatre, family and sport. The three main central streets are the focus for activities, and there will be promotional offers in the shops, plus food and drink offers in the cafes and bars. There will also be every type of street entertainer you can imagine from fire-eaters, to performing statues and jugglers. Transport will be increased for the day, with trams and buses from Santa Cruz running more often, and through the night. Extra car-parking places will also be provided, so it will be easy for visitors, along with locals to dip in and out of the festivities.

It’s the world’s biggest lottery, not in terms of the top prize but because of the pot’s spread. And this year, 2,310 million euros (70m up on 2015) will be shared among winners. The tradition grips the country on 22nd December, when the Madrid draw dominates all TV channels as the winning numbers are sung by a children’s choir, two at a time. The 20-euro tickets go on sale from midsummer and are in series’ of 10, and you must have the ticket and series numbers to get lucky. Many people source tickets from different parts of the country to increase their chances. And each year, some numbers are much sought-after because of historic anniversaries, dates of events, etc.

It is very much a community draw, with lots of work-places, villages, and sporting associations clubbing together to get their block of numbers. It all started in 1812, and the pomp and ceremony still continue. the morning draw is a ceremony, lasting around three hours, with 66,000 balls swirling around in two giant metal globes.

And everything is prepared with military precision the previous day. Three claveros (key-holders) seal the hall until the next morning, when most people are glued to TV sets, at home or in bars, usually. As balls are drawn out, San Iidefonso school pupils sing the numbers in the form of a Gregorian chant. And you will hear that

echoing out from many bars on the morning of 22nd December. Later that day special editions of the newspapers come out with all the numbers printed on a wrap-around cover. If a comunity near you gets a big payout you will soon know about it. Tenerife has fared quite well in recent years with impromptu street parties breaking out in San Isidro and Garachico. The lottery is open to all people and nationalities whether resident or not in Spain, and there are three months to claim your winnings. Brace yourself, El Gordo fever is heading your way soon.

Government’s Cultural Heritage department (Gobierno Patrimonio Cultural), had a closeup view of the ship when he met Foundation President Juan Pedro Morales to deliver the good news. The plan is for La Palma to become a floating, cultural museum. In its hey-day, the steamer delivered mail and provisions between the Canary Islands and Spanish West Africa. It was built by W Harkess & Son in 1912 as a functional steamship. But it also

had bags of style, with brass instruments, first-class cabins and a sweeping staircase between decks. The sturdy ship finally gave out in 1976 when a boiler that fired the triple-expansion steamengine blew up. The ship limped into Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, and was left to rust until the Foundation rescued it. An initial 5m euros was raised in 2003 to spruce up the old war horse, and regular topups have slowly helped the old features to reemerge. And the best

estimate at the moment is a return to the seas next year. Back in 2007, I had a tour around the haunting hulk of the ship and, a few years later, I saw it draped in models for a Peroni calendar photo-shoot. Right now, La Palma can only look on enviously at multimillion cruise ships that pass its Farola del Mar mooring, by the old jetfoil station. But if the Foundation’s dedication pays off, the ship will soon be bringing history to life again.

MADRID’S Supreme Court has sentenced a Tenerife man to 3½ years in prison for pretending to be a healer and deceiving a mentally-ill woman.

Pay-back time and more prison for con-man with heart of stone

Fake ‘healer’ hit sorry woman for thousands The High Court said the defendant took advantage of “the psychical fragility of the victim to obtain an additional profit”. The entire affair began in 2010 when the victim met the accused’s mother, who offered the victim her son’s services as a healer, in exchange for money. Over time, the victim travelled several times from Cuenca, CastileLa Mancha, in central Spain, to Tenerife so that AFG could practise the so-called “treatments”. Once on the Island, the accused managed to persuade her to buy two high-range cars, which, allegedly, were sold to dealers abroad. Eventually, the woman also acquired a Volskwagen Touareg,

He tricked her into buying two high-range cars and a motorcycle, and, in addition, convinced her to authorise him to sell her house. The High Court, which dismissed an appeal by the defendant, known only as AFG, also imposed a 2,700-euro fine and ordered him to compensate the woman with 109,527 euros. They met after the latter contacted a telephone line related to esotericism. The sentence, imposed by Judge Antonio del Moral, increased Tenerife’s Provincial Court of Santa Cruz ruling, which, last year sentenced the accused to two years in prison for fraud, with a 2,400euro fine.

worth 33,139 euros, and a 22,463-euro Mercedes Benz, which were transferred to the defendant, as well as a 9,046-euro Suzuki motorcycle. So close was their relationship that the dodgy “healer” even convinced her to allow him to manage the sale of her house, for which he pocketed a net profit of 51,878 euros. The appeal court concluded that the victim has a delusional disorder. She was “closely related” to her cultural beliefs, and was especially sensitive to some ideas. And, according to the evidence, she also suffered from limitations in matters related to banking or estate management.

delivered to his Alicante area, the 56-year-old was seen riding to an abandoned cabin on his company motorbike, where he whittled the days away and left the mail in a heap. A search of the hut revealed 67 letters and envelopes, 228 arrival notices, a large quantity of postcards

and packages, as well as numerous boxes - and a motorcycle helmet belonging to the postal company. Police, who also searched his home, found a package containing silver earrings, which were addressed to an Alicante woman. She bought them online in August, but they never showed up.

The arrests took place in the municipalities of Pamplona and Alsasua (Navarre), Salvatierra and Vitoria (Alava), and in Madrid. The cowardly assault was carried out by a group of some 40-50 people near the Koxka bar in Alsasua, where threats and insults had been made previously against the officers. Two people involved in the aggression, were initially arrested on charges of attacking and causing injury to figures of authority. Subsequently, the Association of Victims of

Terrorism (COVITE) reported a possible terrorist offence to the Spanish National High Court, ordering the Central Criminal Investigation Court to launch a number of proceedings. Guardia Civil investigations led to the identification and arrest of various other individuals who took part in the aggro. The assaults formed part of the so-called “Alde Hemendik” (Get Out) movement, created by terrorist group ETA and the outlawed KAS-EKIN, to demand the withdrawal of State

Law Enforcement Agencies and the Army from the Basque Country and Navarre. Monday’s police operation was a demonstration of the firm commitment by the Guardia Civil for the public to uphold the law. It was also a clear example that those responsible for criminal action will be investigated by Spain’s Guardia Civil until they are brought to justice. The authorities stress that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and that further arrests have not been ruled out.

Romuald rowing ahead of the Caribbean pack By Colin Kirby

POLISH adventurer Romuald Koperski set off for the Caribbean from Las Galletas on 31st October in his one-man rowing boat, Pianista.

If well-wishers thought he must be mad to try such a feat, they might like to consider another 13 other boats beginning a similar route on 14th December, from La Gomera, in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The Canaries is a

popular departure point for the Atlantic dangers. The last two mass challenges rowed in 2013 and 2015 with almost double the number of entrants. This year, the San Sebastian port lineup will include solos, pairs, trios, and fours, but ocean rowing-boats aren’t exactly roomy, with a sleeping space at one end and a storage space at the other. Multi-person crews have the luxury of splitting shifts between rowing and sleeping. But singles have to anchor up, set a warning beacon and try to doze off without thinking about huge, passing ships. Britain is well represented this year in the Atlantic Challenge. Teams from England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland include a fourwomen crew in Atlantic Endeavour. Charity is the driving force for all crews, the last two races raising 3.3m euros. Romuald´s independent challenge is for a charity which helps Polish children living in Siberia. The frozen wasteland is close to his heart because he has organised car rallies and led hikes across the icy terrain. On the water, bad weather stopped him part or the way into a Japan-to-San Francisco row. But, not to be

denied, he has lined up another crack at it next year. It´s about endurance rather than speed for Romuald, but the young guns tackling the Atlantic Challenge have records on their minds. The last winner clocked 37 days, 9 hours and 12 minutes before crossing the finish line, 3,000 nautical miles away in Antigua. And anything under 45 days earns entry to an honorary club. The name of Romuald’s boat, Pianista, refers to another talented area of his life. You can find him in the Guinness Book Of Records for the longest PianoForte concert, which spanned 103 hours in 2010. And just for good measure, Romuald is a published writer of books about his adventures, and a fullyqualified airline pilot. Those non-sea-based achievements may not be of practical help on his long row, but they certainly are a mark of his character and determination. You can follow his row at www.romualdkoperski.pl in English. As for the next wave of oarsmen, some of the distinctive rowing boats will be passing through Los Cristianos port when they are shipped and ferried over to La Gomera for the start of their adventure.

Brit tourists splash 22% more this year BRITISH tourists in the Canaries will have spent a total of 5.5bn euros by the end of the year, which means a whopping increase of 1.2bn euros (+22%) compared with 2015.

María Teresa Lorenzo, the Canarian Government’s Tourism Minister, said at last week’s World Travel Market in London: “So far, the winter holidaymaker packages to

the Canary Islands have risen 5.4% above the average, while the increase for traditional summer breaks next year is up 3.7%. “Prices have risen significantly less than the pound has depreciated, thus making it possible to assume that the industry (airlines, hotels, serviceproviders) is reducing margins.” Among the factors that spell out these figures, said the Minister, were: “The British economy boom as the labour market continues to create employment, and the unemployment

rate is below 5%. “Also, the Consumers’ confidence, after the sharp decline in the results of the Brexit, has recovered again and the British are willing to continue to spend and travel, despite the pound’s depreciation.” During the Travel Market, it was observed that, “despite the price increase, the British tourist continues to choose the Canaries”. So far this year, the number of British tourists visiting the islands has increased by 17.6% over the same period last year, which means

544,000 more people. “As we have already anticipated, we are going to close 2016 with five million tourists coming from the UK - a record number.” said María Teresa Lorenzo. “The balance of the World Travel Market cannot be more positive.” Meanwhile, Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, who was accompanied by some 40 tourismassociated company representatives from Tenerife, revealed that predictions for the end of this winter season, and for next year’s

summer season, were really positive for the Island as well. “According to tour operators, there is an anticipated tourist increase of 20-30% Brits,” he said. In addition, there will be five new air connections with the UK in the coming season, with Manchester and Birminghan (Vueling), Manchester (Norwegian), Newcastle (Ryanair) and Belfast (Ryanair). “This will increase the competition and, hopefully, mitigate the possible increase of prices,” said Alonso.

He also revealed that his group had made contact at the Travel Market with tour operators working in other trading areas to take advantage of this boom period - and to define a joint-promotion strategy in markets where Tenerife has less presence, such as Italy, France and Poland. He added that the British market will have spent in excess of 1,382 million euros this year, and that the expected tourist volume for this year would generate an income of more than 2.4bn euros for our Island.

Joint health push by the Red Cross

AN ongoing pilot project, aimed at the expatriate community to help improve their health, has been launched by The Spanish Red Cross and the British Embassy. Initially, it will service

people in the Valencia Community, but it could be extended to all areas of Spain with foreign communities, especially those with pensioners. Pedro Dominguez, from the Red Cross, and British Vice-Consul Sara Munsterhjelm, have discussed details with representatives of various charities and agencies in Torrevieja and Calpe.

“We want to reach out to the British community in case they need any help,” said Snr Dominguez. “They are integrated, but many are getting older, and some do not speak Spanish.” The intention is to make them aware of existing health-care agencies, and to offer help when needed.” The scheme has

already attracted the attention of the French government, which has asked to meet Snr Dominguez. “I think Brexit has made it worse, and a lot of people are worried,” he said. “But the Spanish Red Cross is an international organisation, which exists to help people, regardless of politics or religion.”

Rammed, to death! A RAM, which was protecting its flock, trampled a 94-year-old Frenchman to death in south-west France on Monday. His body was found in Cestas, in a field through which he was taking a short-cut on his way to meet the farmer. He had suffered extreme bruising to his head and face.

The ram was said to be notorious in the local community, although the farmer protested that he was non-aggressive and was simply protecting the ewes. But a local politician, visiting the scene later, was charged at and injured by the ram, which was put down.

Suspect recruiters were after young Islamist militants

SPANISH police have arrested three men and a woman in Ceuta, Spain’s north African enclave, on suspicion of recruiting children and young adults as Islamist militants.

Police believe the quartet formed a terrorist cell dedicated to “the recruitment and radicalisation of young people and children into the ranks of the terrorist organisation Daesh” - an alternative name for the so-called Islamic State ISIS. The statement said: “The cell had a wellestablished channel of communication with Daesh fighters in Syria, who instructed them in the methodology for recruiting new followers in the fight against ‘the infidel’”.

Since Spain raised its national security threat alert in 2015 in response to gunmen attacks in Paris, police have arrested 161 people suspected of Islamist militant activity. Meanwhile, German police have snared five men, also accused of recruiting members for ISIS, The suspects, aged between 26 and 50, formed a national jihadist network, said the country’s chief prosecutor. The arrests were made in the states of North-Rhine Westphalia and Lower Saxony, and police said the group’s ringleader was 32-yearold Iraqi national Ahmed Abdulaziz Abdullah A, also known as Abu Walaa in Islamist circles. He is believed to have professed his allegiance to the Islamic State openly, and is accused of instigating and helping young men join the group in Syria.

The final ETA weapons’ store FRENCH police have discovered the final major weapons’ store belonging to Basque terrorist organisation ETA in a forest next to Compiègne, north of Paris.

Arms, documents and other materials were hidden in four large, buried containers, and among the haul were small arms such as revolvers and rifles. The operation was carried out after a number of communications were intercepted by police, say sources, who added: “There is a lot of material there, and it was preferable to act now.” The remaining dozen or so ETA members on the run were bringing together all their weapons at one site to hand

them over, with international intermediaries present to witness the momentous event. There are, apparently, still arms caches left to discover, but not even active ETA members are aware of their locations, in some instances. The cache, discovered last Wednesday, had been gathered over a period of weeks, but no one has been close to the store in recent days. The terrorist group, which waged a bloody campaign over 43 years that cost 850 lives, was fighting for independence from Spain for the northern

Basque Country region. However, weakened by operations carried out by Spanish and French forces, ETA opted to announce the end of its armed struggle nearly five years ago. But it is yet to dissolve, or hand over its weapons. Recently, the terrorist group and several French politicians linked to radical left, so-called abertzale politicians in the Basque Country, have sent letters to the French Government stating their willingness to bring about a final end to ETA. High-ranking French

politicians, some of whom are close to President François Hollande, say they are in favour of “exploring dialogue” with the group’s current leaders. But other Government members have said No to such a reconciliation, which could, in theory, conclude with the transfer of weapons. Among the latter are Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Interior Ministry chief Bernard Cazenueve, according to sources who have close knowledge of the preliminary contacts. In co-ordination with the Spanish authorities, the French police were aware of these steps being taken, but decided to act and seize the Compiègne weapons cache. Just as well, perhaps, because it contained material which could have been used to carry out attacks.

Golden-oldies to join jurors’ pool THE UK Government has announced that the maximum age for jurors in England and Wales is to rise by five years to 75 next month.

Ministers say the change, the first of its kind for nearly 30 years, will take effect from 1st December and means juries will be more representative of the communities they serve. Today, only those aged 18-70 are eligible to sit as jurors. Justice Minister Sir Oliver Heald QC said: “Trial by jury is a fundamental part of our world-leading justice system, and it is important that our juries reflect today’s society. “People are living longer, healthier lives, so it is right that our courts are able to benefit from the wisdom and experience

that older people can offer.” The new, upper agelimit, first proposed in 2013, could add an estimated three million people, aged 70-75, to the overall jury “pool”, meaning the number rises by 10% from around 31 million to 34m. Around 178,000 people in England and Wales are called up for jury service each year. Officials estimate that between 3,000 and 6,000 of the average annual jury service numbers would be between 70 and 75 after the change. It is also thought that the step could yield an economic net benefit of between £1939m. Savings could result if there is a reduction in the number of jurors in employment when they are called - meaning costs relating to loss of earnings are lower. Estimates for jury numbers and potential savings are changeable because jurors are selected randomly

Cyber fraud’s not that sexy for some AN incredible 400 million people at least, including some eight million Brits, have had their personal data hacked into, allegedly, in what is thought to be the biggest breach ever.

Hackers have stolen personal details of subscribers to the “Friend Finder” networks, which include the world’s most popular adult dating-andswingers’ websites. The intrusion, reported by monitoring company LeakedSource, includes members’ emails, passwords, dates of visits, browser information, IP addresses and membership statuses. The network also includes sex-camera site Cams.com, which has over 62 million registered accounts, plus popular adult sites Penthouse.com and Stripshow.com. The company’s latest

embarrassment is even bigger than the 2013 breach of 359 million MySpace users’ details. It follows the May 2015 leak of almost four million users’ details, including their log-in details, emails, dates of birth, postcodes, sexual preferences … and whether they were seeking extra-marital affairs. David Kennerly, Director of Threat Research at Webroot, told The Guardian: “This attack on AdultFriendFinder is extremely similar to the breach it suffered last year. “It appears not only to have been discovered once the stolen details were leaked online, but even details of users who believed they deleted their accounts have been stolen again. “It’s clear that the organisation has failed to learn from its past mistakes, and the result is 412 million victims, who will be prime targets for blackmail, phishing attacks and other cyber fraud.”

from the electoral register. And, as with everyone selected for jury service, individuals over the age of 70 can apply to be excused if they feel incapable of carrying out their duties, said the Justice Ministry. Paul Green, of over50s’ financial services and leisure specialist Saga, said: “We are living longer, healthier lives. It is great that the Government

has recognised the fact that older people not only have a great deal of life experience, but also remain astute, savvy and worldly-wise. “They will be a valued addition to any jury. This is a commonsense reform and should be applauded.” Justice Minister Sir Oliver Heald QC said: “Trial by jury is a fundamental part of our world-leading justice system. It is

important that our juries reflect today’s society.” Jane Ashcroft, Chief Executive of Anchor, an older people’s charity, also welcomed the move, saying: “Older people already contribute a great deal to society, and they represent an integral part of any local community.” Francis FitzGibbon QC, Chairman of the Criminal Bar Association, said: “The

wisdom and experience of older jurors should help them make wise decisions, with insights that younger jurors may lack. “There is every reason for our ageing population to continue to fulfil its civic duties.” He added: “Those who are infirm can be excused. Jurors should come from all sectors of society, because the jury represents society in all its diversity.”

Brrrrr! But it’s all in the name of research A TEAM of British scientists and support staff have begun arriving at one of the world’s coldest, most remote research bases.

MEXICAN Police are searching for an exterminating angel - an avenger! He has no known face or age, but everyone knows what a service he has provided - or not, depending on opinion!

At 6 o’clock one morning, he rose from his seat on a passenger bus and shot dead four robbers who were holding up the vehicle. The shock “avenger” sitting at the back, waited for the thieves to take all the passengers’ possessions, then executed them, one by one. He then returned all the belongings, stepped off the bus … and disappeared into the early hours of the morning. No witness has stepped up to report him - not even the bus driver And everyone, grateful for his intervention, claims it was too dark to see his features. The mysterious figure

Hemisphere’s winter, with temperatures dipping to -55C and winds reaching 80mph. Conditions will be so hostile that rescue, even in a medical emergency, is almost certainly out of the question. Station leader John Eager, who will be “enjoying” his second winter on the base, told Sky News: “It is easier to get back from the International Space Station than it is from Halley in winter. You are as remote as you can be.” In addition, the

team will have to be extremely selfsufficient during their time at the research station. But its location, far from pollution, is attractive to scientists studying the atmosphere, climate and space weather. Over the summer months 95 people will be working on the ice. But most leave before the base is sealed off by 400 miles of pack ice, and a skeleton crew is all that remain. “You have to rub along together,” said Eager. “You have to be able to

persevere when things are tough. You also need patience, because just getting dressed to go outside can take 25 minutes. “And you need to be up for it every single day, and that’s particularly hard when it is dark 24/7!” One of this season’s first-timers is station medic Dr Neil Spencer, who is swapping a London hospital’s high-tech A&E unit for the more basic environment of the icebound medical room. The doctor will be able to X-ray suspected

fractures and run basic blood tests. And he will also be the base dentist, GP and physiotherapist. “We train up some of the people to assist,” he said. “But sometimes, you have to bite the bullet and see what you can do.” Trauma specialists at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital are on standby in case he needs advice over the satellite phone. But surgery such as an appendix removal is no longer attempted on the base. “Everybody is medically screened, so

Disaster for robbers, who are shot dead in bus hold-up

The avenging angel!

has triggered an unsettling debate in a country already ravaged by all possible forms of violence. Many people here genuinely see this man as an avenger. Some applaud his actions openly, while others consider it proof of the authorities’ failure to enforce justice. But, whether he be an angel or a demon, his actions have left nobody indifferent. A reconstruction of events, using data from the prosecutor’s office and witness accounts, shows that the killings took place at around 6am. The four bodies were found that same morning. The inter-city bus was heading for Mexico City after beginning its journey from San Mateo Atenco, in the State of Mexico. The route covered 62km along a good road and there were 53 passengers

aboard. The wouldbe robbers got on at the stop in San Pedro Tultepec, posing as regular passengers. Five kilometres later, near Ocoyoacac, they brought out their arms. The gang leader pointed his weapon at the driver while his accomplices, knives in hand, began extracting money and cellphones from the passengers. One man sitting in the back resisted, but was subdued with force. The gang’s booty was stashed inside two back-packs and the bus began to slow down. The leader kept talking on his phone; the rest of the gang were waiting for them, just 3,000 metres away, on a curve the bus drivers have learned to fear because of the numerous robberies which occur there. As the bus approached

the spot, the robbers walked to the door to step down. At that moment, a man in the back stood up, drew a gun, pointed and pulled the trigger four times. Each bullet hit its mark. The bus kept moving. The gang leader was the first to fall. The bullet went right through his left shoulder blade and burst his carotid artery. He bled to death. His three colleagues, wounded and panicking, crowded together by the door. The exterminator came towards them. The bus swerved suddenly and the door opened. The leader’s body rolled down and his accomplices jumped out in a futile attempt to flee. The avenger followed them and finished them off, one by one. The mystery man gathered the back-packs, returned everyone’s possessions, and asked that

nobody reveal his identity. He then turned around and disappeared into the depths of the natural park of La Marquesa, while a grateful busdriver continued on his journey. Authorities later found the bodies of Víctor Martínez Gómez, Arturo Martínez Hernández, Jorge Arturo García López and Gustavo Gil García, cousins with a long criminal record of around 30 hold-ups. Since then, eyewitnesses have remained silent, and prosecutors have yet to offer any names. But security experts feel that the killer must be a policeman, or member of the military, because his actions were so precise. And it would not be the first time this situation had occurred. On 17th August, a soldier in civilian clothes killed two robbers on a bus

we are not going to see the heart-attacks and strokes I would see in A&E,” said Dr Spencer. “But it is slippery and cold, so I will see injuries from that. I hope nothing serious happens, but, if it does, that’s part of the appeal in going there.” In 1999, an American doctor stationed over winter at another Antarctic base, carried out a biopsy on herself to confirm a diagnosis of breast cancer. But it was several weeks before she could be airlifted out for surgery. from Naucalpan to Juárez. He could also have been a hit-man, or just a regular citizen who was sick and tired of the rampant insecurity in the country. Last year, around 3,000 buses were held up: 2,732 damaged by vandals and a further 1,589 seized illegally. In the Valley of Toluca alone, where this latest killing spree took place, around 600 buses have been victimised by organised crime. But the avengers have started to multiply! Alejandro Hope, an analyst and former official with Mexico’s intelligence services, says: “There is a radical abandonment by the government. Necessary action is not being taken, and the states hide behind the excuse that this is a federal problem. “People feel helpless and tired of being a victim. In the absence of authority, this type of avenger generates sympathy. He is someone who defends them.”

Vital ‘visa’ visit to India by PM THERESA May has offered to relax visa restrictions for Indian people wanting to come to the UK in return for faster returns of illegal immigrants and over-stayers.

The Prime Minister is aware that she has to balance trade and migration in her talks with India PM Narendra Modi, during a threeday visit to Delhi. “The UK will consider further improvements to our visa offer if, at the same time, we can step up the speed and volume of returns of Indians with no right to remain in the UK,” she said. Pressure has been on the Prime Minister to offer better visa access to the UK in return for post-Brexit trade. But she is also focused on trying to reach the long-missed target of reducing UK immigration to the tens of thousands. Some say that in return for controlling immigration from the EU, Britain will have to relax border controls on citizens from other counties to forge global trade deals. Local media in India have reacted negatively to increased restrictions on student visas since new rules came into force in 2011. And Indian officials claim that this has led to 20,000 fewer international students coming to the UK. There is also pressure on the Prime Minister to allow more work

visas to the UK, as she attempts to build trade relationships with India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy. Asked this week by Sky News whether new trade deals could lead to a relaxation of the visa system, the PM said: “We have a visa system for countries outside the EU that ensures the brightest and the best can come to the United Kingdom.” When it came to visa applications from India, she added: “Nine out of 10 are already accepted. We have, I believe, a good system. We will be talking about trade, and I expect new deals will be signed while we are here.” Mrs May has also offered to make India the first visa country to be added to the Registered Traveller Scheme, under which business travellers can clear border-control more quickly in British airports. It will allow passengers to come through the e-Passport gates usually

reserved for Britons and Europeans, and without a requirement to complete a landing card. The Prime Minister, in Delhi to pave the way for the UK’s first post-Brexit trade deal, added: “Trade is an important part of our relationship with India. “India is the thirdbiggest investor into the UK - second-biggest creator of private-sector jobs in the UK - and the UK is the biggest G20 investor into India. But there is more we can do.” Mrs May said her visit would coincide with business deals between the two countries worth hundreds of millions of pounds. After the speech, a Downing Street spokeswoman said the “assessment criteria won’t change”. But she added: “The offer on visas would be based on improving our service to make it easier for people to apply. For example, we could look at cost.”

Texting probe into death-tram driver

POLICE are looking into reports that the driver responsible for the Croydon tram crash, in which seven people were killed, could have been texting while behind the wheel. Londoner Alfred Dorris was arrested after the crash last Wednesday morning

and has been released on bail. Detectives are now checking the 42-yearold’s phone records to see whether he was distracted when the tram, which should have slowed down considerably on a sharp bend, sped off the tracks at 40mph.

Seven people were killed and more than 50 injured, several seriously, in one of the city’s worst crashes. The tram has now been removed from the scene and, on Saturday, dozens of people gathered to lay wreathes and pay their respects to the dead.

Indians are now largest ethnic minority in UK PEOPLE from minority groups are leapfrogging white people to score more top managerial jobs, as Britain’s middle-class becomes more ethnically diverse.

the number of students from ethnic minorities, studying at the UK’s top universities, has doubled in the last 20 years. The report suggests that some groups from British-Chinese and British-Indian backgrounds have achieved success because of their efforts in the classroom, and the desire to succeed in business. In 1995, the proportion of students from ethnic minorities attending Russell Group universities - the country’s top 24 institutions - was just 9%, but that figure has risen to 18% this year, says the Sunday Times report.

A new study, by the Policy Exchange think-tank, has shown that while 10.8% of all white people in the UK are deemed to be in the managerial and professional class, that figure rises to 11.6% for people from ethnic minorities. It also revealed that

IT is more than six years since Christy Kinahan was arrested in Spain as part of a huge operation to smash his alleged global drugs and weapons business. But the Irishman and his colleagues remain at liberty, mainly through Spain’s inefficient legal system. A civil servant, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: “We’re used to trials being delayed here on the Costa del Sol, but this is unheard of.” His view is shared by other judicial officials. In May 2010, following a two-year investigation involving authorities from Spain, Ireland, the UK, Belgium and Holland, which involved some 700 officers in all, Spanish police moved against Kinahan and his gang with coordinated surprise raids and arrests on Costa del Sol addresses registered to him. More than 30 people, arrested in so-called “Operation Shovel” throughout Europe, featured Kinahan and several of his associates and family. The probe focused not only on drug-trafficking but also on the moneylaundering and property investments in which Kinahan was, allegedly, involved. But after being

The newspaper says there was a gradual rise in the number of nonwhite students at the top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London, in the last two decades. In 2001, 10% were from ethnic-minority backgrounds, rising to 14% in 2006 and 16% in 2011. Last year, after two decades, the number had doubled. The new figures were revealed in the report, which is called Bittersweet Success?: Glass Ceilings for Britain’s Ethnic Minorities at the Top of Business and the Professions. It says: “If you look at the macro data on

Kinahan gang still free to keep raking it in, by the million arrested at his villa near Marbella and detained briefly, Kinahan and his associates were released without charge. Operation Shovel was unable to find enough direct evidence to link Kinahan and Co to specific crimes they could be charged with. The Irish authorities believe Kinahan was not only laundering his own money and buying property with it, but also acting as a financial services agent for other criminal gangs. Kinahan, believed to be the key wholesaler of drugs to the Irish market, is also accused of supplying the UK and other countries with activities that have allowed him to amass a vast personal fortune. The father-of-three is regarded as one of the most intelligent Irish criminals involved in the international drugs trade. He also speaks several languages, including Dutch and

Spanish. In 1987, he was jailed for six years after pleading guilty to possessing heroin, valued at more than £133,000. And in 1998 he was sentenced to four years after being found in possession of stolen travellers’ cheques worth £16,000. Kinahan was released from an Irish prison in 2001, leaving for Spain shortly after. And, say Spanish police, he established international drug-dealing contacts immediately. His villa near Marbella is valued at six million euros, and he also frequents a nearby apartment worth one million. Over the last 15 years, he is believed to have organised mammoth drug shipments from cartels in Colombia, Spain and North Africa for sale to Irish criminals. Five years ago, he was convicted of moneylaundering in Belgium, and jailed for four years.

Police say they found assets of more than 2.5m euros attributable to him. At the same time, Kinahan, who always managed to avoid gangland disputes, became involved in a bloody feud that has now spilled over into Spain. In 2010, during Operation Shovel, Kinahan was already believed to be involved in around 20 murders. One of them was that of Paddy Doyle, in the Costa del Sol resort of Estepona, two years earlier. Doyle had links to criminal gangs in Dublin, say police. But Kinahan and his associates, after being held briefly, were released without charge As part of the operation, a 34-year old man named Gary Hutch was arrested in Dublin. The Kinahan gang are said to have murdered him in Marbella in September last year. That killing set off a

feud between Hutch’s gang in Dublin and members of the Kinahan gang in Spain, and their Dublin contacts. The Irish police believe the attack, at the weigh-in for a boxing match at the Regency Hotel in Dublin in February, was an attempt by Hutch’s associates to target members of the Kinahan gang, who were in the Irish capital. The man shot dead, David Byrne, split his time between Dublin and Spain. Another target was Kinahan’s son, Daniel, who had travelled from Spain for the boxing. Daniel Kinahan is believed to control the smuggling of drugs and weapons into the UK, while Christy Junior runs the organisation’s finances, laundering hundreds of millions of euros around the world. Kinahan’s men have since retaliated, shooting dead eight

the rise and rise of the ethnic-minority middleclass, you would have to say that Britain has come a very long way in the past 50 years.” The report also indicates that more than one-third of doctors (35.1%) and 32% of NHS consultants are nonwhite. Last year, the Office for National Statistics, confirmed that Indians were Britain’s biggest ethnic minority. Official population figures revealed that almost 800,000 Indians were living in the UK, followed by 688,000 people from Poland - equivalent to a city bigger than Liverpool.

men around the Irish capital who were either related to Hutch or worked for his gang. In August, Irish tourist Trevor O’Neill was gunned down in Mallorca after being mistaken for a member of the Hutch family. That incident brings the number of people shot dead to 10 in as many months: two in Spain and eight in Ireland. None of the killings has been solved, although Spanish police arrested an Irish national at Madrid’s Barajas Airport three months ago, linked, allegedly, to the Gary Hutch murder. Sources close to the cases being brought against Kinahan believe it is not just the Spanish legal system to blame for the lack of progress. They say that Brazil has taken five years to respond to information requests; the Cypriot authorities have provided information only in the last few weeks, although the Spanish authorities reportedly allowed a translation company more than 18 months to translate documents into Greek. The UK has yet to answer Spanish requests, saying they were sent in Spanish and must be translated into English.

Pollsters stumped again By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct

LAST week, just like the Brexit predictions, the pollsters got it wrong again, after a seeminglyendless campaign, which saw both US candidates fighting, toothand-nail for the Presidency, with no holds barred.

You must be aware that Donald Trump, representing the Republicans, was voted in as the next US President, and the global stock markets indices fell between 3-5%. The Euro and Sterling both gained slightly against the US dollar. But, with little economic UK data coming out, the focus remained on the US election result and the

markets regained some balance. After a division within the Republican Party, it remains to be seen whether Trump can unite the party to push through his policies. With this major upset, the pound strengthened against the dollar and the euro. The UK still has a low unemployment rate,

and exports are up compared with 2015, leaving GBP-EUR above the 1.14 rate for the first time in five weeks. So, for those of you with pounds, it was good news - an extra 5%-plus on your pounds-to-euros. Whatever your political beliefs, it seems that The Donald has come

up trumps on this occasion for sterling! However, we shouldn’t become complacent because investors will be keeping a close eye on the PresidentElect’s policies. Political uncertainty is leaving analysts concerned about relations between the Eurozone and the United States, particularly

A PETITION calling for a Boxing Day ban on UK shops opening has attracted nearly 100,000 signatures, including a large number from retail workers.

said: “Most retail workers are on the go up to Christmas Eve, then back on Boxing Day. Sometimes, they have no choice. “We managed 30 and 40 years ago when shops were sometimes shut for a whole week, so let’s get back to the way it was. “Forget making money for one day; let’s concentrate on making more memories with the ones we love.” Among the petitions’ 98,000-plus signatories are several retail workers, many leaving messages voicing their agreement. Elaine Wormald, from South Kirkby, West Yorkshire, said: “I used to work in a shop that was open until 10pm on Xmas Eve, closed on Xmas Day and open

versus the pound and the dollar. Italy is holding a constitutional referendum on 4th December. and Austria will have a presidential election the same day. Ahead in the polls is Norbert Hofer, who represents Austria’s anti-European party. If successful, it is believed that his

election could lead to additional instability within the EU. This week is much busier in terms of data out from the UK. With investors studying inflation data, the Bank of England will be hoping for good news after all the volatility surrounding the political issues, and to see the 2% inflation target within reach. If there were added improvement to the unemployment data yesterday (Thursday), sterling could be on the up again by the end of the week. Ban Boxing Day selling, say staff

The petition was set up last month by Ian Lapworth, a baker and former DJ from Kettering, who argues that the Christmas holiday should be respected by retailers so that staff can have “some decent family time to relax and enjoy the festivities like everyone else”. Mr Lapworth, writing on Change.org, where the petition is hosted,

again at 10am Boxing day. “It is so unfair on the staff, many of whom would prefer to stay at home with their young families. “If all the stores agreed not to open on Boxing Day, none of them would lose any trade to another store … it’s common sense, really, but when did that ever matter to money-grabbing storeowners?” Hollie Lambton, from Kimberley, Notts, wrote: “Every year I’ve been working, I’ve had to work Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. I’m fed up with it. “I have family traditions that I can’t do any more, and I want things to go back the way they used to be.

Shops should be shut for a week, or at least on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.” Mr Lapworth plans to send the petition to the 10 Downing Street, but his plea is likely to go unheeded. A similar petition launched last year, also calling for shops to remain closed on Boxing Day, received an official response from the Government saying: “We do not believe it is for central Government to tell businesses how to run their shops, or how best to serve their customers. “Therefore, we are not proposing to ban shops from opening on Boxing Day.”

This autumn, Robert and co-presenter Allegra Stratton take the show on the road for the first time, to the Labour Party conference in Liverpool and the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, in addition to welcoming guests to the studio on London’s Southbank every week. Guests in the first run of the series included Theresa May, David Cameron, George Osborne, Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell, Nicola Sturgeon, Nigel Farage, and Sadiq Khan. Robert Peston says: “After Britain’s Brexit vote, the formation of a new government under Theresa May, and with Labour in turmoil, politics is more volatile and important than ever. Peston On Sunday is here to deliver lively debate and fresh insights into the major political stories of the day, and to look beyond the Westminster ‘bubble’ at issues that affect everyone.”

The Last Miners BBC1, 21.00

Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire is the last deep coal mine in Britain, but now it is due to close, bringing a once proud industry to an end. What will become of the men who spent their days in the dark to keep our lights on? At Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire, deep coal mining in Britain is coming to an end, but before the last 450 miners complete their last ever shift, there’s work to do. Shift manager Jonesy and his team Kev and Sheldon, as well as younger miners Jack and Andy, are under pressure to cut enough coal to pay off the pit’s debts, ensure their redundancy pay and try to secure themselves a future beyond the mine. Join them on their commute to work, dropping over 800 metres below ground before taking a paddy train for four miles to the coalface. As temperatures rise to 33 degrees, it’s a hostile and dangerous environment to work in, but their black humour is never far from the surface. It seems to be ‘one of those days’ today - a number of mechanical breakdowns put them behind schedule, and just when everything looks like it is back on track, an unexpected incident in the shower room causes alarm for everyone. As the deadline for the closure approaches, it is clear that not everyone will be able to make their last trip underground…

The Coroner: The Drop Zone BBC1, 14.15

Returning for a second series, Coroner Jane Kennedy (Claire Goose) investigates sudden or unexplained deaths in the English costal community of Lighthaven, South Devon, working with her former flame Detective Sergeant Davey Higgins (Matt Bardock). In South Devon, Chief Instructor Rafe Phelps (David Corbett) is jumping at the skydiving school, The Drop Zone, when his parachutes fails and he dies on impact. Rafe’s business partner and ex girl-friend Lori Fletcher (Tupele Dorgut) tells Jane and Davey that the parachutes must have been sabotaged. Meanwhile, one of the other skydivers Eddie Landman (Robin Laing) heads to The Black Dog to drown his sorrows and drunkenly reveals to Mick and Judith that he killed his best friend. Jane finds out that he’s not the only one who had a motive and the opportunity to kill. Rafe’s distraught wife Jess (Simone McAullay) begs Jane and Davey to give her some answers. The question on everyone’s mind is whether someone killed Rafe - or did he do it to himself?

The Martin Lewis Money Show ITV1, 20.00

The Martin Lewis Money Show returns with an hour-long live special, in which ITV’s financial guru will try to save viewers hundreds of pounds as they watch the programme. The series opener, set in front of an audience of 200 at a dockside warehouse in London, focuses on the fact that a reported 60 per cent of customers are overpaying £300 a year on their energy bills. Martin will explain exactly how to try to save money on those bills - so viewers at home can join audience members in doing exactly that. With the help of co-presenters Saira Khan and Ranvir Singh, viewers will also be invited to get in touch via social media and email during the show to talk about their own switching stories. As part of this live ‘switch-athon’, Martin also plans to help people try to slash credit card rates, haggle bills and more – as the audience sets the agenda with a live Q&A session. And using his unique Festive Forecaster, Martin will predict the big discounts, codes and vouchers coming up for Black Friday and in the pre-Christmas period, to allow people to pounce on purchases when they’re at their cheapest. After the series opener, it moves to its regular slot of 8pm on Mondays with Martin and Saira. The half-hour show will feature Martin’s roadshows around Britain, in which he will talk about subjects as diverse as getting hold of thousands of pounds of free cash towards your new home with a lifetime ISA, slashing childcare costs, and how to earn five per cent interest on your savings.

China – One year on from the end of the one child policy – Debi Edward It’s been a year since China’s controversial one-child policy ended. For more than 35 years Chinese families were fined if they had more than one child, a policy designed to curtail the country’s swiftly expanding population of more than a billion people. But the policy had some troubling consequences - the ageing population grew, while the working population shrank, and because sons were favoured over daughters it means that now for every 100 women in China, there are 106 men. USA - Healthcare in The States – Emma Murphy At remote clinics across the USA, scenes of hundreds and sometimes thousands queuing for hours to receive medical attention are becoming commonplace. With little or no health insurance, poor Americans have no alternative but to travel sometimes hundreds of miles to pop-up hospitals run by a charity in stadiums, schools and even fairgrounds.

Ill Gotten Gains BBC1, 09.15

For some criminals, crime doesn’t pay. This dynamic and groundbreaking new series follows Regional Organised Crime Units and Police Forces systematically taking down Britain’s criminals. How? Quite simply by seizing their assets as ‘Proceeds of Crime’ and selling them at auction to put money back into the public purse. Presented by Angellica Bell and Rav Wilding (pictured), each programme shows how assets are seized from criminals and then sold at auction to be highest bidder. They will tell the stories behind the lots, but also the victims’ accounts of suffering at the hands of multimillionaire criminals, and how proceeds of crime money then goes to good causes. And we’ll witness criminals’ prized possessions going under the hammer. Ill Gotten Gains sheds a spotlight on just how the police and other crime fighting agencies are hitting criminals where it hurts. Viewers will discover for real just how much cash can be recouped from Ill Gotten Gains. Elite officers from the West Midlands Asset Recovery team raid the home of a man whom they suspect has been involved in mortgage fraud. We also watch how a fraudster, who was living in a mansion and hiding a cannabis farm in a secret den behind a false wall, has his proceeds of crime seized and valued for auction. A boat that was involved in smuggling illegal immigrants is auctioned off at a Proceeds of Crime sale, and a man is jailed for fraud after selling fake car insurance to more than 600 unsuspecting victims. Today’s programme also visits Lylac Ridge farm in Wales, which helps disadvantaged children and adults and has benefitted from funding through Proceeds of Crime.

Black Is The New Black BBC2, 22.00

Episode three features a cast of black British high achievers, including Naomi Campbell (pictured), David Harewood, Alesha Dixon, Sir Trevor McDonald, Lenny Henry, Thandie Newton, Chuka Umunna, Tinie Tempah, Dizzie Rascal, Commonwealth General Secretary Baroness Scotland and footballer Les Ferdinand. All reveal how, if you are black, the path to the top in the UK can be fraught with challenges, from tokenism and type-casting to a lack of access to capital. They also reveal why some decide to try and make it in the US and how self-censorship often prevents many from achieving their potential. Trevor MacDonald describes how he insisted on not being the token black newsreader, covering “problems in Brixton”, and Homeland star David Harewood talks about how playing Othello inspired others. Comedian Gina Yashere discusses what she calls The Rule of Two: only one black person allowed to make it to the top. She says: “I used to do this joke about waiting for Lenny Henry to die so that I could get on TV.” The penultimate episode of Black Is The New Black is celebration of the massive achievement of black people in Britain, but also a reminder that balance has not yet been achieved.

MasterChef: The Professionals BBC2, 20:00

In this quarter-final, the best chefs from the heats return to contnue their quest for the title. The chefs begin with a new test, Monica and Marcus ask them to reinvent and reimagine a great family favourite, steak and kidney pie. Only four chefs have the chance to cook for the critics, the others are sent home. The four chefs that impressed now face a test that has seen even the best crumble under the pressure. They cook a two-course menu of their own design to be scrutinised by judges Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti and three of the UK’s most experienced food critics - William Sitwell, Jay Rayner and Tracey MacLeod. They have just one hour and 15 minutes to turn out a delicious main and dessert. The three chefs who conjure up dishes to impress critics and judges alike will make it through to knockout week, and keep their dreams of lifting the Professional MasterChef 2016 alive.

House of the Year. Kevin McCloud hosts Grand Designs: House of the Year. The competition is run in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects and celebrates excellence in housing design. Over this four-part series, Kevin is joined by Damion Burrows and Zac Monro, as they explore some of Britain’s most cuttingedge contemporary homes, all of them in the running for the prestigious prize - the Bafta of the architecture world. In this first episode, Kevin and co profile five amazing country homes on the long-list for the prize: including a large house camouflaged within a hill; a loving restoration in Wiltshire of a prototype modernist retreat; a Scottish home that blends an agricultural exterior with a sleek modern interior; and a slice of spectacular California modernism in Cornwall. Kevin then reveals which of these homes will make it onto the final shortlist.

Accion del Sol news

Give us a chance! WE have so many dogs at our refuge, all of whom deserve a second opportunity of life. They have so much unconditional love to give, and will be your friend, forever. They all have a story to tell, mainly of cruelty, starvation and neglect. But, with a little time and lots of love, they make such loyal pets. Be assured that every single dog, adopted from our refuge, will

be fully inoculated, passported, microchipped and heartworm free, and have a clean bill of health. We also castrate/ sterilise every dog before adoption, and all we ask is that you make a donation of your choice towards the costs that we incur. Maybe, with Christmas on the way, you can find it in your hearts to help us. A tin or two of dog food, bought with

your local shopping, would be very much appreciated by our fourlegged friends. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm,

and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del SOL.

K9 news update

We’ll stop break-ins

THE K9 kennels are immensely grateful to all who supported our 5th November fundraiser, collecting money to make the refuge more secure, following break-ins to steal the dogs.

Jacqui Peters and her colleagues, at The Brewers Droop in Las Americas, could not have worked any harder in gaining support for this very worthwhile cause. In addition to the vast array of vocal entertainment, there were cakes for sale, guess the name of the dog, tombola, a raffle with scores of wonderful prizes and lots of other ways of getting supporters to part with their euros. The brilliant sum of 3020 euros was raised, which means that measures can continue to be taken to make the kennels a much safer haven for our animals. Our Xmas Dinners The Annual K9 Festive Dinner is taking place on Saturday, 10th December at Restaurant Cueva El Campesino, in Aldea Blanca. Cabaret is by Storm Duo and Aidy Evans. Tickets are 20 euros, which includes most drinks with the meal. They are on sale from Studio 5 hair salon in Los Cristianos, the K9 kennels, Lin on 626 344 799 or k9mikey@ gmail.com. Dog and cat treats, brought on the night, will be most welcome. Our supporters in the Alcala area are having their Festive Dinner on Friday, 16th December in Alcala. Tickets are on sale at 15 euros from Christine on 669 613 675, who can

also provide further information. Car boot sale We also have a regular car-boot sale on the last Sunday of every month. However, in December, it will take place on the 18th. This is held at Los Gigantes bus station, and runs from 9-12.30pm. If you have a full collection box, please contact any of the above numbers and we will arrange to have it emptied as soon as possible.

K9 puppies: Help! Get us out of here! Nine beautiful puppies, recently abandoned at the gates of the refuge, are now looking for their forever homes. Seven boys and two girls, they are all between seven and nine weeks old and, when they grow up, will be medium to large-sized dogs. It gets cold overnight at the refuge in the winter months so it is especially important that all our puppies have cosy homes to go to soon. If you can help us by providing a safe, secure and loving home for any of our youngsters visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas, any day of the week between 10am2pm. Alternatively, please get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468 or emailing info@k9tenerife.com

Tuesday Crafters’ success THE Swallows’ “Tuesday Crafters” held their Christmas Craft Fayre in the El Paso bar, Castle Harbour, last Saturday. The event was organised by Andrea Blundell and Doris Gonzales Edwards, who run the craft group.

“We had a fantastic day, and would like to thank everyone involved,” said Andrea, “including those who came along and supported us. It was a fantastic success, with a whopping 506.67 euros being raised for the Swallows’ cancerresearch charity.”

Cats Welfare news

40,000 reasons to spay ONE female cat has the ability to produce an average of 12 kittens a year, and, if those kittens (and so on) are not spayed/castrated, in only six years there will be a staggering 40,000 extra cats! Letting your cat have kittens may seem like a fun thing to do. Some even believe it’s healthier for the cat. Neither is true. Becoming pregnant and having a litter of kittens in no way alters the maturity level of the cat, either physically or mentally. In most cases, people find it hard to find good homes for all the kittens, even if they are advertised “Free to a Good Home”. A difficult labour, kitten mortality, and potential health problems in the mother can take all the fun out of the experience. Most people end up wishing that they had never allowed their female to have a litter. What are the dangers to your cat of getting pregnant? Females in heat will actively search out male cats, and may attempt to escape from the house or garden, putting them in the danger of traffic, fights with other animals, etc. The howling at 2 am will affect your behaviour as well as your cat’s! In addition, unspayed females may spray urine when they are in heat, and that’s never going to

smell nice in your home! Mammary cancer is the third-most-common cancer in cats, and reproductive hormones are one of the primary causes. Cats who have been spayed have a 4060% lower risk of this. Unspayed cats can develop a severe uterine disease. With this disorder, bacteria enters the uterus, and it becomes filled with pus. Undetected, this condition is, almost always, fatal. As you can see, there are many reasons to spay your females. Not only does it eliminate many medical and behavioural problems, it probably adds years to their lives. It will, at least, provide them with a more-comfortable, less-stressful existence. The safest, permanent form of sterilization is spaying. It not only prevents pregnancy, but also heat cycles. If a female cat is in heat (she will be in heat for 3 to 16 days) and is not mated, she will come back into

heat every 14 to 21 days until she has! Physiological and behavioural patterns press upon her to mate. Being locked in an apartment or house, where this is impossible, causes great anxiety and frustration (for her, and you). Cats Welfare can secure inexpensive spaying for your cat. Contact us for details. Designer Sale After the great success of our first designer sale in October, we will be holding a second on 11th December at The Palms Bar, Golf de Sur, 12-6pm. There will be dresses, tops, suits, shoes etc. for women, men, children and babies, so something for everyone. Gucci, Coast, Monsoon, Yves, Saint Laurent, are just some of the names we have. Adoptions If you’re looking to adopt a cat or a kitten, we have lots to choose from. Ring or WhatsApp Maria on 646629129 (7 days a week 9-6pm), or message us on Facebook or our website www. cats-welfare -tenerife. com. Donations Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you. Cats’ bash off CATS Welfare have postponed their fundraising event at Harvey’s Bar this Sunday (20th) through unforeseen circumstances. Organisers are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

This meaning anyone who doesn’t have much time to spare in their daily routine can still enjoy great food with good service and a nice atmosphere without taking up a large portion of the day. The first thing you notice is the great atmosphere as soon as you walk in - WOW, the place looks very modern and vibrant with nice attention to detail from the word go. There is a big terrace outside with lots of seating in the sun or shade, while inside is shaped like a tunnel and all clad out in wood. Its fantastically clean and has a relaxed, friendly feel to it. For only having been open a few days Dedos was surprisingly very busy (but it doesn’t take long for a good thing to catch on) there was

an abundance of both local people who had popped in for lunch and shoppers having a quick bite to eat. The word Dedos if you weren’t already aware means FINGERS in Spanish, this gives you a good idea for the type of finger licking food they serve there. Don’t worry though, Dedos does provide cutlery for those on a casual date looking to impress or a girl’s day out fresh from having manicures. At first glance the menu makes you realise its not a fast food place, there is great street food selection with food from China to Jamaica and many places inbetween covering most continents. The Menu is all very simple but with some satisfying complex twists which Venture Restaurants are famous for. One of the biggest surprises with Dedos is their prices, with the sharing platters anywhere between €4 to €6.50 and the main events between €5 to €8 which includes the house coleslaw and sides. The prices are not

far off some of the wellknown fast food chains but the quality of the food cant be compared as Dedos wins hands down every time! One of the most difficult things when visiting Dedos is deciding which one of many delicious things to choose from. The

menu’s main sections consist of the following sections: “To Share” yummy wings, wholesome salads, fully loaded Nachos, popcorn chicken and many other gourmet delights. “The Main Event” has a great choice of Ribs, Wraps, Global Sand-

wiches, Gourmet Burgers and house roasted Chicken, all of the main event meals come with coleslaw and a choice of sides. “Deditos” (little fingers) - A nice section for the kids that includes sides and a drink. “Desserts” scrumptious cheesecake, gooey brownie and fresh home made donut balls. For our first experience of Dedos we had the Chicken wings with Dedos special white sauce, a good size sharing portion of beautiful crispy wings that were glazed in a rich spicy marinade and topped with their special ingredients to give a nice kick tantalising the taste buds. After finishing all of our starter we jumped onto the main event, and what an apt name for their mains as each one stood out, The Jamaican Jerk ribs had a good portion of ribs with ample meat that just slips off the bone, moist and soft in texture but deep and rich in flavour with jerk spices leaving you in

Rastafarian heaven. We also had The Philly Steak and truffle soft sub which is packed with high quality steak and melted tangy cheese that oozes out finished off with fresh rocket, truffle oil and a great tangy ketchup, the subs bread is nicely toasted and is a great classic addition to the menu. The stand out dish of the day was the Chinese 2 way Pork Gao Bao. This steamed bread pork sandwich originates from Taiwan and the Dedos version is served with chat sui, pickled cucumber, spring onions and hoi sin sauce. The bread is light and fluffy like a pillow packed full of beautifully slow roasted pork, rich with Chinese flavours! To add to these already amazing flavours its married up with Dedos pickled cucumber and the rich traditional sauce transporting to how you imagine a busy street street corner in Taiwan. All of the food is of very high quality, with attention to detail and good sizable portions! With each Main Event we had a choice of sides. Stand-out sides included the Cajun fries which were spicy and peppery, the Greek salad fresh and tangy with feta and the house rice soft and sticky just how it should be. Looking back, we had realised we wildly over ordered but were left powerless to stop trying everything leaving nothing on the plate to our some what greedy embarrassment. There is no doubt we will be visiting Dedos again with such great quality, good prices, fast service and such a varied menu your probably struggle to want to cook at home ever again.

Behind the Mic...

Interview by Val Sainsbury IT was definitely a case of lighting the blue touchpaper and retiring, but it was hardly Guy Fawkes being interviewed by Oasis Fm DJ Robbie Dominic. It was firecracker Stan Boardman, the Liverpudlian comedian, and he needed little encouragement from the mischievous DJ, to regale listeners with his infamous, German-aircraft joke. For the next three minutes, Stan never stopped repeating the offending word, which, unfortunately, is pronounced the same as the much-maligned expletive beginning with F. “It was so funny,” recalled Robbie. “I couldn’t resist asking him, and I knew, exactly, what he was going to do. He was really into it. I used to wonder how I got away with it.” For the benefit of our younger readers, who may not have heard this particular joke, FockeWolf was the German manufacturer of civil and military aircraft, often confused with Fokker, the Dutch aircraft builder. Robbie, 58, is Oasis Fm’s longest-serving DJ, having worked, continually, at the station for the last 16 years. He’s on air from 8 ‘til noon, Saturdays and Sundays. Born in Leeds, he has two children Ben, 34, and Charlotte, 32, as well as five grandchildren. “My son works for MENCAP, and my daughter is a care-worker for the elderly. They’re both in nice, caring jobs,” said proud Robbie. “Charlotte’s at college and is aiming to be a social worker. She’ll get there. She’s very determined.” Robbie’s partner, Wanda, is a chef. They met over here, and have been together for nearly 19 years. “We’re getting married on our 20th anniversary, in 2018,” he said. He’s been in the entertainment business since

1979, beginning as a 21-yearold member of a band. “When I left school at 16, I worked as a freight g u a r d with British Rail, transporting coal from the colliery to the power station. It was a very demanding job,” he said. “I first got together with singer Suzy Q in 1990, and we formed a duo act, Slam. I worked on the railway for 18 years, until Suzy and I went professional, in 1991. “This was when we realised we were good enough to work full-time. We had a Meatloaf and Cher act, and performed in pubs and workingmen’s clubs in the North of England, as well as in South Wales. We also sang all over Europe. “Suzy and I first came to Tenerife in 1997, and, after a year, I went solo. Two years ago, we reformed Slam, after a 17year gap. “We’re very compatible on stage. Our voices blend brilliantly, and we harmonise well. We still do Meatloaf and Cher, in an hour-long show.” For his solo act, Robbie has an Eighties Gold show, singing hits made famous by groups such as Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran. “It’s a compression of as many songs as I can fit into an hour, and I work about five nights a week,” said Robbie. “I use to compere at Summer Nites cabaret bar in Los Cristianos from 2006-2009, but that wasn’t really my bag. I didn’t like compering, and preferred moving round, rather than being in one place.” When I told Robbie that he looked good for his age, he said: “It’s this place that does it. It keeps you young. I

Disaster in Doncaster Many years ago, Robbie was auditioning with his band in Doncaster. “I was trying to impress, and pirouetted around the stage, doing all the rock-star moves,” he said. “ I slipped off the edge, and ended up flat on my back, in the middle of the dance floor! “I was absolutely winded, and couldn’t sing. The laughter from the audience was ringing in my ears, and I thought I’d never get work again.” He added, with a chuckle: “The band continued to play as if nothing had happened! I got back on stage, and we continued. “Luckily, only my pride was injured. And we got the gig!”

It’s not all plane sailing feel good. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink much, and I walk every day. Like a lot of people in their later years, I thought I’d better start looking after myself.” Changing subjects, he revealed: “I love all music, although, as I’m getting older, I’m becoming more selective. If I had to pick a favourite genre, I’d choose quality pop music from the Seventies and Eighties, which is what I play on my radio show. “I’m a big Beatles fan, which was my Dad John’s influence. He passed away last year, and, at his funeral, we played In My Life, from their Rubber Soul album. It was his favourite track. “My love of music came from him. He hardly saw me perform, and I didn’t think he was that interested. But my Mum always said he was really proud, and would tell people about me. It’s a Yorkshire thing! People never say what they’re thinking.” As for being a DJ, honest Robbie said: “I always say that we are enthusiastic amateurs. You either adapt to it, or you don’t. My enthusiasm comes from being able to play the music I like.” Robbie performed the Spandau Ballet hit Gold at the 2014 TEAs, the year he won the Entertainers’ Entertainer award. “I’m very, very happy here, but I miss my kids and family most of all,” he said. “You wonder what they’re up to, and, as you’re getting older, so are they. “No matter how great things are here,

it’s always there in your mind, but you can’t be in two places at once. “Everything I do is based on music and entertainment. I have one of those jobs where, as long as you’ve got your voice and you keep your fitness, you can keep going.” And Robbie has one final ambition: “I hope that when I get to retirement age, I’m still performing!”

Diamonds aren’t a girl’s best friend

visitors

By Carl from Robot

By Miruna Voicu

When someone bursts into tears in a salon, it’s normally because their hair’s a disaster, or it wasn’t the look they wanted.

CHRISTMAS is a time for family and friends. And, when you own a property or live in Tenerife, you will find out just how many family and friends you have!

Or, they may have been through a hair-trauma, and are so grateful that someone has transformed everything. When a woman suffers hair loss, or has had her hair destroyed with chemicals or a cut, it’s traumatic, to say the least. Over the years, I’ve known women say that they would rather lose body parts than their precious hair. When dealing with this

situation in the salon, it’s upsetting for both parties. So, why is it that some women abuse and neglect their hair, and it only becomes a concern when it’s a mess, or they have lost some, or all, of it? It is your crowning glory, and you don’t get a second chance at looking after it. If your hair isn’t looking at its best, whatever you wear to look glamorous isn’t going to work, if your hair isn’t

doing something for you. No matter what hair problem or disaster you are going through, we at Robot Hair and Beauty are here to help. If you think that nothing can be done with your locks, then reconsider. Having a client bursting into tears of joy is what my job is all about. It makes our day to see someone happy with what we do. Forget diamonds; your hair is your best friend, and your hairstylist is, too.

RED ALERT! By Carl Pattison

Your little black dress has been transformed … your staple favourite has changed colour. The new littleblack-dress is now RED! There’s nothing more Christmassy for the party season than a red-hot number.

Red suits most skin colours and hair tones, and it’s my favourite colour for winter. From

vibrant reds to deep burgundy, orangey reds

to poppy-red, it will be the most-seen colour this festive season. Match in your accessories with good old classic black, or stand out in metallic silver, gold or greys. The choices are endless. It all depends on your personal swing on this red-hot fashion. If you’re going to opt for a little red number, then make sure that the dress is doing something for you, and it’s not just the colour you’re going for. Keep it to simple lines, with minimal fuss. This lets the colour stand out, rather than the detail.

People in the UK are obviously keen to get away at this time of year to escape the cold and dreary weather. But since Christmas is also a great time to spend time with your loved ones, we welcome them with open arms, of course! Anyone looking to rent a property for family members over the festive period may be disappointed this year. World events have restricted locations where “safe” holidays are available, and the Canary Islands is experiencing a boom in tourism, with rentals in great demand. Owning a sofa bed at your property will increase your occupancy, and it’s not like the old days when you needed to sacrifice comfort and design, either. Sofa beds look no different from many other kinds of sofa, and new developments in mattresses mean that they can be comfortable, and still fold away neatly into the sofa carcass. In fact, to look at them, you wouldn’t even be able to tell

they were sofa beds, so you can also fib if you don’t want to put someone up. When it comes to budget, it is possible to pick up some sort of sofa bed for little money. But this is a case of, “you get what you pay for”. A sofa or sofa bed that looks great in the showroom, but has inferior cushion fillings or a poor structure, will not last long. And if you have to replace it within a couple of years, it can be a false economy. This is one area where it’s worth investing some money to achieve the comfort you deserve. Hand-made sofa beds are available in Tenerife. And within reason, small changes to the design - such as

shape of the arms or the height of the back - can be carried out at no extra cost. You can also choose the firmness of the cushions, and the colour and pattern from a huge variety of fabrics. And, for the quality, they may not be as expensive as you think they are! Because they are made on the Island, it’s still possible to order for Christmas, but the time limit is drawing near! This is also time to order anything else you would need for your Christmas visitor, such as extra pillows or bed linen, towels, or any other house items you’re still missing. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789 729.

Cyclists... and the other road-users

By Emma at Motorworld

WE are all aware that there are lots of cyclists on our Tenerife roads, and that some appear to use the entire highway exclusively, to the detriment of motorists and other users. But, is this legal?

There are many ways to look at this. Firstly, yes; cyclists have just as much right to use the roads as cars and other vehicles. However, they should respect the Highway Code, and the rules and laws of the country in which they are cycling. Spanish Law states that drivers should allow 1.5 metres distance between the cyclist and their vehicles, when passing or overtaking. This is not always possible, as the size of the road may not permit this. You should always allow adequate distance between your car and the cyclist when passing.

But cyclists should not be riding more than two abreast, and should be courteous and aware of other road users. Sadly, here in Tenerife, especially in the winter, cyclists of all nationalities converge on the island, and can seem to take over the roads. This causes frustration amongst other road users, which is quite understandable.

There has been talk of the introduction of a law whereby cyclists will have to hold a valid liability insurance, to cover any damage they may cause. Equally frustrating is when a cyclist uses a pedestrian crossing, illegally. The law states that a cyclist riding on a zebra crossing is considered to be a vehicle, and is treated

as such. The cyclist must dismount, and walk over the crossing. Failure to do so can land the cyclist in hot water. If a cyclist is riding over a crossing at speed, and a vehicle driver does not have enough time to see them and brake, then the incident is the fault of the cyclist. There was a case in Spain, recently, where

a cyclist was crossing on a light-controlled crossing, to then join the flow of the traffic. A flashing amber light allowed the traffic to proceed with caution, and the pedestrians had a green light, permitting them to walk across. The cyclist, however, deeming himself to be a “pedestrian”, rode across and hit the side of a passing car. Initially,

the fault was placed on the driver. A judge later ruled that it was the cyclist’s fault, as the green light was for the passage of pedestrians. The bike was being ridden, so it was considered to be a vehicle, and therefore at fault. The cyclist was ordered to pay over 500 euros to the driver of the car, for damages and compensation, and has to pay the court costs. This should serve as a strong message to cyclists that they must adhere to the rules and laws of the road, and respect the safety of other road users. Some house policies include cover for bicycles, but check whether this provides third-party liability, should you damage another vehicle, or injure a person whilst riding. It may just be for theft from your home. It is advisable to take out a small insurance to cover yourself. This isn’t a legal requirement, but an option that is available. You wouldn’t drive your car without insurance. Why should your bike be any different?

Banish those fizzy drinks

By Val Sainsbury YOU’VE read so much in the newspapers about healthy diets and clean living that you have decided it’s time you did something about it.

Trouble is, you just love cola and cannot resist your daily dose. So, you reason, if you switch to diet pop, you’ve cracked it, along with millions all over the world every year. After all, the companies’ large marketing departments convince us that

switching to the diet variety is a perfectlyhealthy alternative. The reality is that these claims are simply untrue! Most fizzy-pop manufacturers replace sugar with an artificial sweetener called aspartame. Yet a new study, carried out by the University of Iowa, has shown that this chemical is linked to an increased likelihood of heart disease. The study, headed up by Dr. Ankur Vyas, was one of the most comprehensive of its type, with nearly 60,000 women participating over nine years. The research, known as the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study, found that participants who drank two or more cans of diet pop a day were 30% more likely to have a cardiovascular event

(eg: heart attack) and 50% more likely to die of a heart-related disease than someone who drank none. “This is one of the largest studies on this topic, and our findings are consistent with some previous data, especially those linking diet drinks to the metabolic syndrome,” said Dr Vyas. Given the scale of the study, and the fact that approximately one in five people in the US consumes diet drinks on a daily basis, the results could prove to be hugely significant to overall public health. The total of 59,614 participants were split into four groups by the research team: two-ormore diet drinks a day, five-to-seven per week, one-to-four per week and zero-to-three per month. After nearly

nine years, the health records of each woman was analysed. The results were that coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart attack, coronary revascularisation procedure, ischemic stroke, peripheral arterial disease, and cardiovascular death occurred in 8.5% of the women consuming two or more diet drinks a day. This compared with 6.9% in the five-toseven diet drinks per week group; 6.8% in the one-to-four per week group; and 7.2% in the zero-to-three per month group. On the surface, the results didn’t appear to fit the hypothesis that aspartame was one of the leading causes of heart disease. However, records showed that, alongside the slightly-higher rate

of heart-related health issues, the women in the two-or-more daily group were, on average, significantly younger than the women in the other groups, meaning the diet pop was causing health issues at an accelerated rate. The women in this group also had the highest average BMI (Body Mass Index) and highest, average blood pressure. Despite the scale of the study, no official conclusion can be drawn, but the initial signs are worrying. “Based on these and other findings, we have a responsibility to do more research to see what is going on, and further define the relationship,” said Vyas. “This could have major public health implications.” Several more research

projects have been commissioned since the publication of the University of Iowa’s results, to deduce the scale of the issues that aspartame can cause. Meanwhile, however, the advice is to cut out fizzy drinks from your daily life, And if you do indulge occasionally, regular pop is actually better for you than the diet variety. The money pumped into making diet pop appear as a healthy alternative is further proof that many large companies are far more concerned with lining their pockets than benefiting their consumers. So, when it comes to the items you eat and drink, do make sure you know exactly what you are putting into your body.

And the runners-up are… WE are now just over halfway through the Direct Telecom Pool League season, and it looks as though Gaffers A will retain their title - unless they have a massive collapse!

That means it’s now about the runners-up spot, and Tenerife Hammers A cemented their claim with a win on Tuesday. It has been a rough few weeks for the one-time, all-conquering Hammers, but there are signs that they will finish the season strongly. They faced old foes Palms A in what started out as a close encounter. The early frames were close, with Hammers’ Wez in fine form. Palms A’s success has been built on their team spirit, and they all chip in with vital frames. They pulled back to 3-3 after being 2-0 down, but Hammers then found another gear, with new-boys Paul and Heineken taking vital games at crucial moments as Palms imploded. Some poor shots from them gave momentum to Hammers, who gobbled up their chances. The 8-4 win was a fair

reflection, and, with no Cup distractions, Hammers A could be a good bet for second spot. Phoenix Potters, also in the mix, had a fairly easy night of it at home against Terrace Bar Roosters. The visitors took the first frame, but went backwards from then on as Potters picked off frame after frame, soon hitting the magical No.7 target for the points. Roosters need a bit of luck to turn their misfortune around. On paper they have an excellent squad, but they need to get their confidence back. Dreamers A are still among the contenders after scraping past Rewind A in a tough match in Los Cristianos. Both teams have been in decent form, and it showed because neither could make a breakthrough because they were playing resiliently. Going into the last frame, the home side held a 6-5 lead, and Rewind A needed the game to force a draw. But they just came up short and Dreamers A dragged themselves over the line. Just outside the top five, Rewind Rewired were in home action against Bluebell A, who have had a tough season. Rewired were favourites, but Bluebell A,

more than capable of pulling off a result, proved tough opponents. The match was close and the resulting draw was fair on both sides. Treehouse A were an early-season favourite for a title challenge, but have not been at the best. A home game against Terrace Bar Bantams offered them a chance to get back to winning ways, but it didn’t start well, though, as Paul, Marky P and Pete gave the visitors a 3-1 lead. That became 4-1 when Marky P won his second game of the night, both of them because a Treehouse player potted the black early! The home side rallied and took the next three to level the scores. But Paul, and Marky P with his third of the night, guaranteed the Bantams a point. Scott then took his third frame to pull it back, which left Paul against Adi to contest the last frame. Paul looked in control, but he allowed Adi a visit

and the Bantams captain made no mistake, clearing his final two balls and the black to clinch a superb win for his team. Palms Elite, at home to Gaffers B, will be disappointed at dropping points! The first two sessions were shared and the score was poised at 4-4. The home side looked confident, but Gaffers B rallied well with Wilson, Nath and then Graham taking a frame each, which was enough. The disappointment for Palms Elite was that they had ball in hand twice, with two shots on the black, yet somehow managed to lose each frame! The positive point for them though, is that Shai is turning into an excellent ref! Gaffers A continued their march towards the title with a win against Exiles A, but they had a shock start as Ben, Mark and Tel gave the visitors a 3-1 lead. Exiles had their tails up, but that served

only to annoy their opponents, and Gaffers A won all remaining eight frames and the match. In Division Two, the “It’s tight at the top” saying has never been more apt because any of the top five teams are capable of taking the title. Picasso’s A, in top spot, managed to stay there after a difficult away match at Exiles B. The visitors started well and took a 3-1 lead after the first session. And it’s a good job they did because over the remainder of the games, honours were even, giving them a 7-5 victory. Yates Bar held on to second spot after a good win over fellow title-challengers James Hammers C. It should have been a tough fixture for the latter, but the James gang had an off-night. Maybe it was coming, though, because they have ridden their luck over the last few weeks. The home side raced into a 3-0 lead, only to be pegged back as the visitors took the next two frames. But that was as good as it got for James Hammers C as Yates Bar put their

foot down, winning six in a row for a fine win. Bluebell B, on a brilliant run of form, continued with another three points against Palms Rebels, who were on a high after their giant-killing exploits in the Cup against Tenerife Hammers A. Unfortunately, they couldn’t repeat that form this week and soon found themselves 3-1 down. Bluebell B then repeated the scoreline in the second session to lead 6-2 with just one frame required. This soon arrived as John beat Mick, and Bluebell B continued their charge towards the top. The Crown, in fifth spot with games in hand, and still in with a title chance, laid down a marker with a comprehensive win at Splash Bar, who are usually a decent team. But the home side were really off and just couldn’t get a win in the early frames. The Crown were on fire, taking frame after frame, and it wasn’t long before they secured the points. The only bright spot for Splash Bar was that they managed to take a frame to avoid a whitewash.

Nadas B uproot Palms! THE 2nd round of Canarian Weekly's team handicap competition gave lesstalented teams a chance to take on loftier opposition. And, maybe, produce an upset or two.

We were not disappointed, although Palms Pool Bar would probably disagree! They are chasing the Division 2 title and were looking

forward to a visit from Pas O Nadas B. But the Los Abrigos outfit used their 128-point head-start to good effect, dumping the Palms gang out of the competition promptly! But the handicaps were not that kind; at least not in the Trophy, because just one other lower-ranked team made it through to the next round. That was Sandys Reborn, who pipped the Playboys by the odd point. Another tantalisingly-close tie came at Emerald

Spanish football chiefs in football-fund puzzle MIGUEL Cardenal, Spain’s Sports Minister, has insisted that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) refund the Government a 219,500-euro subsidy.

He believes, the money has been “diverted for other means” than a special project, for which it was intended. After the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, in which 316,000 people were killed and more than 1.5m rendered homeless, the football body were given the funds to build a new football school there. “We have begun a refund process, because the Ministry does not think the employment of the subsidy given is justified,” said Cardenal. “The Federation believes the refund is not justified. But in our opinion, with the checks we have carried out, the objectives which we agreed to award the subsidy have

Tavern made light work of Bar 180's 144-point advantage to cruise into the next round, while two Division 1 heavyweights met in Los Abrigos, Phoenix dispatching Gaffers with a rather surprising 6-1 scoreline. Marilyns B, with a near-300point cushion, and Sundowners with more than 200, both crashed out against Division 1 opposition, losing to The Pub and Pas O Nadas A respectively. How many do you want, chaps? There were just four

ties in the Plate, or first-round losers' cup, as we call it, and again, just one lowerranked team were successful. So well done to Bar Leones for seeing off promotion- chasing Picassos in another close match. Roods' 256-point advantage was to no avail as they lost 6-1 at Spear Chuckers, while Waterfall made little use of their 112 points as they lost at PSB. And elsewhere, an all-Division 1 tie saw Boothen whitewash hapless Exiles.

not been completed. And, therefore, we have asked them to return the money.” The project remains on the drawing board, and Spanish daily El Mundo recently claimed the funds, which included plans to send coaches from Spain to Haiti, were diverted for other means. The newspaper claims the RFEF’s only contribution to the project was to send out football boots and goalposts to Haiti, and that at least 176,000 euros of the 219,500 was spent on activities aside from the main project.

But he accepts that his Saturday-night saga “doesn’t set a great tone for the England captain”. Pictures emerged of Rooney, looking dazed, with red-wine stains on his lips, posing for photographs in his England tracksuit with guests at a wedding reception he had, it was said, gatecrashed. The Manchester United star has since issued an apology, acknowledging that the pictures were “inappropriate”. And, though Glenn is keen that the incident shouldn’t become “a drama”, he confirmed yesterday (Thursday) that an investigation was underway to establish what actually happened, why Rooney was sozzled, and whether FA staff were involved.

“Don’t make a drama out of it,” he told the press. “We are having a proper investigation into what went on. It’s disappointing.” Glenn added: “It’s appropriate that he apologised. It doesn’t set a great tone for the England captain, but I don’t want to over-

dramatise it, either. “Were there FA staff involved? We’re establishing the facts. We’re talking to people who were there to find out if anybody from the back-room staff was involved.” The FA chief stressed. “Why on earth would you be doing that,

given there is a team agreement around alcohol consumption during camp? There would be questions asked for sure.” Glenn has said that in future, the FA will work with players in order to establish rules for how they use their downtime.”

Jouini’s on-and-off day

By Colin Kirby

ELEVEN minutes! That’s how long Tenerife striker Jouini stayed on the pitch after coming off the subs’ bench, and getting a red card for what was a dodgy foul, to say the least.

It wasn’t the only low point for the home side because stand-in keeper Falcon made a suicidal charge out of his goal to gift the visitors with an equaliser. Busiest people in Santa Cruz last weekend were the CD Tenerife medical staff, who patched-up midielder Vitolo´s fractured nose so that he could play. But inspirational central-defender Carlos Ruiz was still a little short of a return, even with a mask to protect his cheek-bone. Alberto has had mixed games covering for Ruiz, but this was one of his better days, Just minutes into the game, he made a strong intervention to cut out a Numancia raid by Pablo. Amath was the man in form, but with Cristo Gonzalez getting a rare start up front, he was back out wide - and ineffective for much of the game! But he did make the

CD Tenerife 1 Numancia 1

first real home chance, ghosting in down the right, only to launch a shot over the bar. Their fortunes changed, however, when full-back Camille spotted an opening down the left and was just inside the box when Numancia´s Ruiz cut him down. Suso took the penalty and hit it beyond the keeper’s grasp, giving the 9,876 crowd good reason to hope for a win. Falcon, who has been an impressive deputy

between the posts, showed his form just before half-time with a strong punch to clear a dangerous ball near the post. Numancia´s Valcarce could have opened the second half with a goal, but his shot was far too high and wayward. The game’s turning point came when Cristo Gonzalez couldn’t control a loose ball in front of the Numancia goal. In an instant, it switched from a golden home

chance to a breakaway for the visitors. Manu del Moral was running on, more in hope than expectancy. But he couldn’t believe his luck when Falcon had a rush of blood, raced out of his goal … and forgot to clear the ball! It seemed a bit harsh a few minutes later when Cristo was taken off and replaced by Jouini because the young striker was playing well and

in need of game time. Jouini, all arms and legs, clumsy and crude, added little to the forward line. But when he clashed with his marker, it looked as though a booking was all he deserved. The ref, fooled completely by the defender’s dyingswan routine, sent the striker off. Suddenly, it was a case of holding on for the draw, with the ref getting more erratic

- don´t they all when they come to Santa Cruz? But there was one last chance for Tenerife. The ball came to Alberto, who blasted it goalward. Somehow, though, it bounced off the bar when it looked a certainty. Two points dropped, but maybe Tenerife will fare better at home this Sunday - they need to - against Murcia, kickoff 5pm.

Start believing them! SOMETHING really special is happening at CD Marino, where the young squad is getting better by the week, showing determination and a growing maturity.

Players are working hard for each other and the team cause. And losing key defender Mendy early in the second half after fighting back to 1-1 could have left them vulnerable. But they regrouped and were strong enough to score a last-minute winner. Home defender Fran Delgado did well to block an early shot from Matias, and Sandro squandered a corner by flighting his cross over defenders and attackers alike. Fran Alonso carved out the first home chance but also shot wide. With Ibarra in third place, the teams were well-matched, creating plenty of openings without the final blow. Matias looked a threat for Ibarra, and Manzi had an ongoing tussle with Delgado. But the blue-shirted right-back limited him to a few corners, keeping the inside route closed.

CD Marino 2 Ibarra 1

Manza came more into the game, but should have squared the ball to Matias instead of

blasting his shot high and wide. Marino showed some good build-up play,

especially from Facu Valiente and Lolo Amario. But the final pass was missing and central-striker Adan had few clear chances. Ibarra pressed again on the half-hour and a slick move was finished off by Pablo for a 1-0 lead. Cicovic was in top form in the Marino goal, and his timing was spot-on when denying a couple of close-up efforts low down. A well-taken corner fell just right for Adan who headed strongly, only

Basketball

Tenerife’s Treble trouble AFTER a flying start to their season, Iberostar Tenerife have hit a sticky patch with a third consecutive defeat on Wednesday, beaten 66-62 at Ostend in the European League.

It’s not yet time for alarm bells because the losses were against some of their strongest opponents. But coach Txus Vidorreta will have to get to grips with the squad’s weak points. The previous Sunday, the La Laguna team were hammered 86-59 at Real Madrid. A firstquarter deficit of 23-19 was as good as it got

because the home side pulled away after that. Aaron Doornekamp top-scored with 11 points, and there was a personal-best 10 points for Senegalese rising star Petit Niang. In Belgium, it was tight throughout, with quarter scores of 22-20, 16-18, 1716, and 11-10. Georios Bogris top-scored with 14 points, with Carl English a point behind. The most worrying aspect was that four players failed to post a single point, including captain Nico Ricotti, who’s finding it hard to regain his form and fitness after a six-month injury lay-off. The two latest setbacks leave Tenerife in third place in the Liga Endesa and the European League.

to see the ball clear the bar. The equaliser just before half-time was a beauty. Facu and Kevin Castro carved Ibarra open with a neat interchange for Facu to fire into the net. Marino drew on the boost to set them off in the second half, but they were rocked when Mendy limped off injured. Coach Toni Dumpierrez shuffled his pack, with sub Amed playing wide up front, so Kevin Castro could

drop to right-back, with Delgado taking the left. It worked well and Marino looked solid. Play was pretty even in a typically-tight derby game between two sides who know each other well. Saul came off the bench for Adan and was soon in the thick of the action as Marino pushed for a winner. But there was still plenty of danger left in the visitors, Cicovic proving his worth again by smothering a Manzi shot. As time started to run out, Lolo powered a shot over the bar. Then Colly made a rare slip, losing the ball to Juanra, who made a mess of his shot and didn’t even trouble the keeper. Marino pushed forward again and as the ball pinged around the box Saul spotted his chance and cracked the ball home. Ibarra made an injurytime bid for a point as their keeper moved upfield and launched a long ball towards the Marino goal. But Cicovic mopped it up just before the whistle to signal their most important win of the season to keep them firmly in the promotion race.

Cream of European kids AFTER a year’s break in Miami, La Liga Promises will be bringing Europe´s best under-12 players to Puerto de La Cruz.

The festive feast of football will run from 27-29th December, with budding stars from all over Europe. And England will be represented by Middlesbrough. It had become an established Las Americas fixture for years, but the event will now be staged at the El Penon ground, in Puerto de La Cruz. Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Real Betis, Sporting Gijon, Villareal and Sevilla will be flying the

Spanish flag. From Germany, there is Borussia Dortmund; France send Paris St German, while Italians Juventus and the Middlesbrough kids complete the line-up. Again, there is no Canarian involvement - a glaring omission but even a combined representative team from across the islands would be welcome. Extensive TV coverage is given to the short games, with the grand final shown live on several European sports channels. It has always been free to watch in Tenerife, with a crowd of over 5,000 at each final. And the football is always of a high standard, with the youngsters still innocent of football’s more cynical tactics.
