€2m up in smoke But Cabildo praises the legion of workers who controlled it quickly THE devastating effects of last week’s blaze in the South of Tenerife caused an estimated two million euros worth of damage to agriculture, mountain paths, the pine forest, and, especially, irrigation systems.
It spanned a vast area of 6,500 hectares - around 32,000 acres - and was brought under control in just four days by a huge army of workers, many volunteers. Experts believe that only 2% of the Island’s pine forest was harmed - against last week’s initial estimate of 1% - and that much of the forest problem was caused by burning bushes. And, as Tenerife Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior pointed out this week: “Most of the affected pine trees will recover because of their great capacity for regeneration.”
The Canarian Pine (Pinus canariensis) can grow to 45 metres tall, the large evergreen has a bluish, green tinge to its fragrant pines and produces chestnut brown cones that are 10-23cm long. Ironically it’s one of the most fire-resistant conifers in the world. The destruction spread rapidly across the mountainous terrain, causing damage to forest and villages from the seat of the fire in Ifonche, west to the Guia de Isora area and east to Vilaflor, where 1,800 residents had to be evacuated. But mercifully, no serious injuries have been reported. Melchior was quick to praise the professionalism of the entire workforce, who battled day and night to make the damaged region safe. “In only 72 hours, the fire was stabilised, and it was under control within 96 hours,” he said. “The Cabildo wants to highlight and acknowledge the enormous effort and impeccable work carried out by all personnel involved in the fire.” The President added: “It’s not just the professionals who worked so hard, but all those administrations, public and private companies,
associations and individuals who worked as volunteers.” In all, 914 people, 99 vehicles, eight helicopters and three seaplanes were employed to render the area safe, with the Cabildo supplying 536 people, 75 vehicles and a helicopter. Also involved were: Forest Brigades (BRIFOR); Technical Cecopin (Coordinating Centre), members of the Consortium for the Prevention and Fire Fighting; groups of, Environmental volunteers from each area; State Government (330 people, 20 vehicles, three helicopters and three seaplanes); Emergency Military Unit (UME); Fire Brigades Reinforcements (BRIF-A); National Police; Guardia Civil; Canary Islands Government (36 people, four vehicles and three helicopters) and Canarian Police; Gran Canaria Cabildo (12 people and one helicopter) plus local police and civil protection NGOs.
It was an incredible turn-out but, though the flames were doused quickly, given the circumstances, firefighters are still up there, damping down the smouldering areas and making sure that the blaze cannot be reignited. Now, the serious aftermath work begins and the President, together with Environment Minister Ana Lupe, have already contacted the mayors of the municipalities concerned - José Miguel Rodríguez (Adeje), Pedro Martín (Guia de Isora) and Manuel Fumero (Vilaflor) to discuss the damage, and what needs to be done to hasten the recovery. Joining them were politicians from all levels of Government, plus representatives from Teide National Park, including the director, Manuel Durban. Mercifully, none of the protected species in the National Park was harmed, and officials are expected to re-populate affected
zones without too much difficulty. “It is also necessary for the Ministry to provide us with aerial means - at least one aircraft based in the archipelago.” It is the Canarian Government’s wish that at least as a minimum there is one sea plane based in the Archipelago as opposed to waiting for support from mainland Spain on such occasions.
*Burning of rubbish or agricultural waste prohibited.
Cabildo bans still operting
*Fires in recreation or camping zones in forest areas strictly prohibited.
Tenerife Cabildo has issued a statement reminding the public that numerous bans remain effective, despite a slight increase in humidity and lower temperatures. The Cabildo’s “necessary” preventative measures are:
*No fireworks in areas where there is a risk of forest fire. Fireworks allowed in urban centres only. They must be ground level and used only where there is no risk of reaching open land or vegetation.
*Use of tracks and pathways in the forests is authorised but users are reminded to be responsible. *The use of training camps for hunting dogs is allowed, except the camps in Chio, and Taucho, and others which are located in the burned areas.

How Admiral Nelson forged an ever-lasting Tenerife link

SANTA CRUZ is honouring a 215-year legacy of goodwill and understanding between Islanders & British community That’s how long ago it was that Nelson, the British Navy Admiral, led his ships in to battle in his efforts to invade Tenerife. However, Spanish troops under the command of General Gutiérrez defeated the great British Navy on the 25th day of July in 1797. In gratitude of the fair and honourable treatment his troops received after surrender, Nelson presented
the Spanish general with a cheese and a beer, while Gutiérrez repaid this gesture with two bottles of wine. “Nelson y Tenerife. Una Doble Mirada” (“a shared perspective”) is the name given to the events which are currently taking place in Santa Cruz, until Monday (30th July) to mark that historical day. The event itself has always been highly respected, but, looking back more closely, that small exchange of goodwill between enemies held huge significance. The same sentiment of
co-operation and mutual understanding is reflected in the exhibition “Nelson y Tenerife. Una Doble Mirada”, and Maria Leng, British Consul to the Canaries, attended its inauguration last Friday. “This was a hugely important moment in British and Canarian history,” she said. “The generosity of General Gutierrez towards Nelson and his troops set an example, and relationships between our two countries have flourished ever since. “It would have been hard for anyone to have imagined
215 ago that Britain and Tenerife would have such deeply-forged social and economic ties.” The Consul added: “I would encourage British residents to go along to the exhibition to learn more about our place in Tenerife’s history. “The organisers of the event are keen to replicate that goodwill and co-operation between communities, resonated by Gutierrez and Nelson so many years ago.” Nelson y Tenerife: Una doble Mirada is being staged at the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, in Santa Cruz.
King gets the boot Spain’s King Juan Carlos has been officially removed as honorary President of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, a post he has occupied since its foundation in Spain. In the decisive vote, 94% of WWF members approved his removal. The monarch has been the subject of fierce criticism after an elephant hunting trip to Botswana made headlines in April. WWF España said in a statement that it had taken into account the complaints of its members and society at large, both in Spain and abroad, over the king's Botswana jaunt.

"Although this type of hunting is legal and regulated, it is considered incompatible by many of its members, with the honorary presidency of an international organisation that defends nature and the environment like the WWF," the statement read. In the vote over the removal of the honorary presidency, 94 per cent of WWF members cast their ballots in favour. In order to eliminate the post, the NGO's statute requires the backing of two-thirds of members present at the vote, which numbered several dozen, to which are added email ballots.
THE Olympics are here if you hadn’t already realised; here as in the UK not Tenerife! Regular readers of my column will know that on occasion I mention the famous graffiti artist Banksy, partly because I enjoy his work and partly as he’s from my home city. This week Banksy has recently put up two stencils - called 'Hackney Welcomes the Olympics' and 'Going for Mould' on his website www. banksy.co.uk but ironically the location has not been revealed. In past weeks many artists have complained that their artwork has been removed as part of an Olympic clean up campaign. This has happened in some areas but not in others.
graffiti as it is vandalism and deemed illegal, yet will also help protect work by Banksy." A petition was set up after a council banner covered this mural. A spokesman for Hackney Council said it took time to decide whether something was graffiti or street art which should be preserved. Helen Bingham, campaigns manager for Keep Britain Tidy, said: "There's a difference between low/grade tagging and the work people like Banksy do. "You have to look at it and know the difference - it's not a black and white thing." "We have a million extra people coming here so, we want them to see the area looking its best." In Brick Lane, a petition was set up to remove a large council banner which
Olympic-themed street art on Brick Lane has been left untouched, but this is because it appears to be one of the few places in the capital where street art is celebrated. Walls which have not been touched in years are now being cleaned off. The authorities say that there has been no official remit for graffiti to be removed - rather, they just clean the walls if someone complains. But Geoff Whitehouse from Very Nearly Almost, a magazine which documents street art, disagrees. "It's been going on for over a year or more with a general clean-up around Hackney," he says. "This is part of a wider issue where councils proclaim to a zero tolerance policy on

The petition said: "Everyday, hundreds of people are captivated by a beautiful piece of artwork that was given to the people of Tower Hamlets by an internationally renowned artist." After it received more than 1,700 signatures, the banner was duly removed overnight by the council.

THE British Embassy is urging Britons to ensure they take out comprehensive travel insurance to cover every eventually while on holiday in mainland Spain or the Canary Islands. More than 1,100 cases of Brits ending up in hospital were reported to consular staff in Spain last year, with 102 in Tenerife alone. Jeremy Browne, Minister for Consular Services, said: “While the prospect of ending up in a foreign hospital may be the last thing on your mind, sometimes things do go wrong on holiday, and many people deeply regret not taking out comprehensive travel insurance.
“We also witness many cases where people have invalidated their policy, perhaps by not declaring a pre-existing medical condition, or not checking that their policy covers a particular activity, such as hiring a moped. “Unfortunately, they are then surprised that the Foreign Office cannot pay for their bills and flight home. “I urge anyone heading overseas this summer to research their destination, take out comprehensive cover, and carefully check the small print of their policy.” An emergency can be extremely expensive. Medical treatment can cost thousands of pounds, whilst medical
insurance and avoid a lifechanging bill *Read the small print and don’t invalidate your policy by mistake *Get an EHIC card because it’s a holiday essential for any state medical treatment you might need while visiting. But it doesn’t cover everything. A British Embassy spokesperson said: “An EHIC is free and simple to obtain. Getting one could save you a lot of grief. If you don’t have one, it could make a tricky situation even harder. “Then buy travel insurance and, for the cost of a meal in a restaurant, you should be fully covered against expensive health-related bills and other risks.”
repatriation to the UK can cost even more. Consular staff in Spain have witnessed distressing cases involving families having to raise vast sums of money to pay hospital and repatriation bills. New research by the Foreign Office reveals that nearly half of all Brits fail to realise that without travel insurance, they will have to pay their own medical bills if injured or taken ill abroad. And nearly four out of five people would lack the ready cash to pay £10,000 to cover the hospital bills of an uninsured loved one abroad. Visitors to Spain, and British residents who may be hosting them, should remember three key things: *Buy comprehensive travel

THE ongoing conflict regarding rubbish collection in Adeje seems no closer to a resolution, with workers representatives saying they are nowhere near reaching an agreement. As a result, the Saturday strike action in protest against the Council’s decision to stop Sunday collection, saw over 200 tons of rubbish pile up on the streets last weekend, throughout Adeje Municipality.
The weekly strikes will continue on Saturdays until an agreement is reached between the Town Council and the sanitation workers. According to Federico Linares, President of the collection company’s worker’s committee, “The only one to blame for the rubbish piling up is the local government, with its decision to end collections on Sundays and holidays. “In light of this we had no choice but to start the
Saturday strike action, since our employer, the company contracted to do the work, intends to reduce the number of employees as a result of the Adeje Council’s decision. “On Sunday, 140 tons of rubbish accumulated on Adeje’s streets. This means that roughly 70 tons were not picked up on Saturday due to our 24 hour strike. With the minimum services we have in place during the strike we picked up about 60 tons.” Linares said he can’t
understand the position the Adeje Council is taking, considering the amount of damage that is being done to the popular tourist destination’s image. While some hotels have come out against the strikers, many others have signed a letter to Adeje’s authorities, urging them to consider reinstating Sunday and holiday pick-ups. Local residents too, are coming out in support of the workers, Linares claimed.

Energy profits to take a hit?
Spain’s utility companies have begun some lastminute lobbying against a sweeping round of taxes expected to be levied on the country’s energy sector by the end of July. The Spanish government, which has been preparing a reform to reduce a deficit of more than 24 billion euros, is likely to announce a 4% levy on most energy sources; a move electricity companies claim will wipe out their combined net profits in Spain.
In a letter, (apparently seen by the Financial Times), sent to Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s PM, the chairmen of Iberdrola, GasNatural and Endesa are requesting an urgent meeting with the premier, claiming the reform would render their future profits in Spain, “zero or even negative”. Spain’s energy market has enjoyed large state subsidies to renewable energy producers over the past decade, which transformed the country into one of Europe’s leaders in renewable
technology, but left the industry dependent on big subsidies. Under the reform, which has repeatedly been delayed as companies press their views to a government concerned with the political consequences of forcing price increases to consumers, these subsidies are likely to be reduced severely or eradicated. While renewable energy investors and operators say any reduction to subsidies would render their
investments uneconomic, and would be a retroactive breach of regulations, the country’s traditional utilities say the structure of the reform will punish electricity and gas producers proportionately more than sectors such as solar energy, a major renewable resource here in Tenerife. Analysts expect that companies and investors with big renewable energy exposure will suffer the largest overall impact on profits.
America’s pollution comes to Tenerife Still unsure about climate change? Well, here in Tenerife we can blame the Americans. Apparently, tropospheric (ground level), ozone and carbon monoxide from North America, especially the United States, regularly reaches the Canary Islands and influences the climate, according to Sergio Rodriguez, from the Centre for Atmospheric Research Izaña, in Tenerife. He added that U.S. air tends to flow from west to east, enters the Atlantic, passing over the Azores and then reaches the Canaries above a sea of clouds. Carbon monoxide is a gas formed in incomplete combustion processes, such as cars and fires, and ground level ozone is formed in the ambient air we breathe, unlike stratospheric ozone,
which is located about 22 kilometres above ground, in the ozone layer. Rodriguez explained that the arrival in Tenerife of pollution from North America is one of several novel results in the thesis of Yenny Gonzalez, who has studied and worked at the Centre, with the Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Yenny Gonzalez has analyzed the data of air pollutants that were measured at the Centre’s observatory, and this research has identified ultra fine particles, which are among the pollutants of most concern to the scientific community because of their potential impact on health and climate. Previous studies did suggest that these particles
are only emitted by cars, but this study has demonstrated that industrial emissions of sulphur dioxide also result in very high levels of these particles. In the case of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, emissions of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere come from the refinery and from ships. The study concludes that in Santa Cruz de Tenerife car emissions result in ultra fine particle concentrations between 5,000 and 20,000 particles per cubic centimetre of air (p/cm3), and concentrations from the ships between 20,000 and 35,000 thousand p / cm3, while the refinery causes concentrations between 25,000 and 100,000 p/cm3. In a previous study by the Hospital Universitario de Canarias and the Centre
for Atmospheric Research Izaña, published in August 2011 in the Spanish Journal of Cardiology, it was demonstrated that there is an association between particle concentrations in the ambient air of Santa Cruz and hospital admissions for heart failure. The European Commission has not yet established limit values for concentrations of ultra fine particles. According to the latest report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the particles affect cloud formation, precipitation patterns and therefore climate. Izaña Observatory, part of the Meteorological Agency (AEMET), is one of the twenty-eight stations that form the Global Atmosphere Watch Network.
Whale corpse washes up at El Cabezo beach The massive, partial body of a whale was found recently by swimmers, washed up on the beach at El Cabezo, on the Granadilla coast. The decomposed remains weighed 4,000 kilos and required lifting equipment to load it onto a truck bound for the Environment centre in Arico.
As yet, the cause of death is unknown, but conservationists have expressed their hopes that the creature is not one of a long list of marine mammals that have fallen foul of the fast ferries that ply their trade between Tenerife and La Gomera.
Former San Miguel Councillor acquitted The life of Juan Sabino Oval Gonzalez, San Miguel’s ex-Councillor for Planning, Public Works and Highways at the San Miguel de Abona Town Hall, changed dramatically back in December 2006, when he was arrested and charged with human trafficking, for allegedly bringing Venezuelan women to Tenerife, where they were forced into prostitution. Five and a half years later, after a trial held in March that lasted several days, Juan Sabino Oval went from being charged with the crime of "pimp" to being charged with a lesser human rights crime. At last, now nearly four months since the trial, the Sixth Section of the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has brought in its judgement, an acquittal for Oval and his co-defendant,
"in dubio pro reo", noting, "An absence of clear, even indirect, convincing evidence." "No element proved strong enough to form a guilty conviction in this Court, hence it is appropriate to acquit the accused," details the judgment. In the initial brief for the prosecution, the ex-Councillor was accused of being part of a group that approached women in Venezuela and offered them waitress jobs, but once on the island they were forced into prostitution. The women claimed they were provided with the necessary paperwork and air tickets to come to Tenerife, where they were collected at the airport by the defendants, who took away their passports and took them to an apartment where they realised what they were expected to do.
Unemployed should do community service? The underground economy in the Canary Islands is 28%, very close to the rate of unemployment in the archipelago, which is at 30%, and five points above the national average of 23%. These figures serve to highlight what the president of the National Federation of Autonomous Organisations (ATA), Lorenzo Amor, calls the, “National sport”, the practice of collecting unemployment

while performing paid work on the quiet. Amor said, “This kind of work, where no bill is presented, is only good for the two people involved, but has a very negative impact on society in general.” The ATA President is calling for social responsibility and more inspections to deal with the situation. While acknowledging that, in his opinion, the new measures introduced by PM Rajoy, whereby those who
commit benefit fraud will lose their entitlement, are positive, he believes they need to go further. Unemployment relief should be handled by Social Services, he says. “We might not like it, in fact I’m sure we won’t, but benefits should be linked to the performance of community services,” he continued. “It’s not enough just to pay out money from the State that we are all paying for. People should have to work for it, doing jobs
that aren’t getting done. “There are a lot of people collecting 426 euros a month and working at the same time, often for employers that take advantage of the situation and pay low wages.” For these reasons he says that the Government must adopt measures to bring the underground economy down, something he believes is one of the major problems the country faces.

Early blow for bill-payers THE increase to IVA (VAT) comes into effect on 1st September, but it will probably be imposed on gas, electricity and telephone bills from this month. Consumer group FACUA says the law allows for suppliers to charge the higher IVA rates, as long as the bill is sent out after 1st September. It also warns about buying a new car before September because they are cheaper in December - and the reduction this year could be greater than the IVA increase.

Economic outlook THE economic situation in the Canaries this year will not improve, according to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce. In fact, it is likely to get worse.
Director of Research for the Chamber, Lola Perez, presented the results of the 2011 study and 2012 outlook, put together jointly with CajaCanarias. She said 2012 will be a hard, complicated and critical year, and the good results of 2011 will not be repeated in 2012. This new period of recession, she said, is down to numerous factors, not least of which are the budget cuts and deficit control measures. Still, the Chamber of Commerce
estimates that the Canary Islands will be the region with the lowest drop in the nation as a whole, given the weight of tourism on the economy. This sector and its knock-on effect was what prompted the good results last year, figures which, according to Lola Perez, "Will not continue this year," especially with the fall of domestic tourism. She added that the situation of "panic" in general that "we are engaged in," with an unemployment rate that will exceed 32% and where most of the unemployed are long term, will not help revive the economy. All this sees spending shrinking and significantly reducing domestic demand. However, Lola Perez said, this is not the case with sectors that are
international, so the Chamber of Commerce is committed to address "real" structural reforms to support the financing of companies that aim to expand abroad. Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Vicente Dorta, said the aim is to also support small and medium sized businesses and the self-employed, who are the ones who ultimately create jobs. Therefore, he supports direct structural reforms to promote employment, growth in domestic demand and economic recovery. "If we continue in the same way here," said Lola Perez, "We will continue to have limited capacity to generate employment and serious difficulties in maintaining the welfare state."
Free health check for your paperwork Tenerife International Business Centre (TIBC) for over 30 years have been synonymous with providing help and advice for people living in Tenerife. And now, they are expanding, by opening a new office in the San Eugenio Shopping Centre, Adeje; this centrally placed office means that they can better serve both their existing and new clients. Don’t worry their original office in Las Galletas, Calle Candida Peña is still open. The San Eugenio office is well placed, underground parking and on a direct bus route, close to Notaries, Lawyers and the Land Registry; which is useful as TIBC now offer a whole host of services for those living in Tenerife. At present they are offering a noobligation document health check. All it means is you getting together all of your paperwork, (the documents in plastic wallets all neat in your drawer, the half opened envelopes stuffed next to the cabinet on your kitchen work top, the papers underneath the ornament on the table in your living room). TIBC then go through all of those papers and make sure you’re covered for everything that you should be, and more importantly make sure that you’re not paying out for things that you don’t need. TIBC carried out this service for a lady living in Valle San Lorenzo, who is happy for us to tell her brief story. Jackie Byatt took all of her Spanish documents into TIBC, only to find that she didn’t have adequate cover on some insurance policies and on others the premium was too high. Jackie said, “By just letting them look through my documents in total I saved more than two thousand euros a year.” Tenerife is fanatical about paperwork, but because we all just go with the flow, you could be paying too much. For example is your buildings insurance with the company you obtained the mortgage from? It doesn’t have to be, despite what

the mortgage lender tells you! When was the last time you reviewed your car insurance? Small savings across the board add up to a lot. Currently if you go and have a free Document Health Check, it then entitles you to go onto the TIBC website www. tibc-dhc.com and register your details for the regular newsletter and entry into a draw to win house insurance up to 300€ or life insurance up to 30k or car insurance up to 300 euros – for life! The fully ‘notarised’ draw will take place at the end of this year. The services that TIBC offer are too vast to list here in their entirety, but go to www.tibc-dhc.com to see what they offer. They provide advice for everything from residencias, to wills, to medical insurance, life insurance, car insurance and helping with taxation, traffic documents and general insurance – house, accident etc. It’s definitely a one stop shop for paperwork here in Tenerife. With the recent changes in healthcare provision here in Tenerife it is well worth checking out your healthcare cover, and, if you’re traveling back to the UK on holiday remember that you’re a resident of Spain now, not the UK, and you should
have travel Insurance, especially when traveling to countries like the US or going on a cruise. Spend ten minutes gathering together all your paperwork – you won’t regret it. Help for homeowners in Arona ARONA Mayor Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron and Housing Councillor Marta Melo have announced that the period for submitting applications for home renovation grants is open from July 28th until August 21st. In a statement, the officials said, “These grants are part of our social policy to help families in our Municipality during these difficult economic times.” The beneficiaries of this aid, which goes up to 100,000 euros, are homeowners with a minimum of two years residency. Family annual income cannot exceed twice the minimum wage, based on 2010 figures and all tax payments must be up to date. Home-owners with more than one residential property are excluded as are those already in receipt of other grants. Marta Melo explained that the aid can be requested for maintenance and renovation works, "To ensure the home is habitable, with good hygiene and healthy conditions.” Among the work considered appropriate for the grant is painting exterior walls, cladding repair or replacement, repairs to doors and windows, flooring, roofing and siding, and the repair or renovation of sanitary facilities, for example. Valle San Lorenzo commercial plans VALLE San Lorenzo will be the latest Arona town to join the trend in Open Commercial Zones, according to Arona’s Councillor for Economic Development and Employment, Marcos Esquivel Afonso. The Councillor met recently with Valle San Lorenzo entrepreneurs, to promote the idea of joining those commercial areas, already established, in Las Galletas and Los Cristianos. Afonso Esquivel explained that this initiative is part of the Municipal Commercial Zone Strategic Plan 2011-2015, which aims to, "Strengthen the Municipality of Arona as a major trading centre, supporting the economic sectors involved, promoting modernisation, quality and management to boost trade and create jobs." The meeting was attended by representatives of the other Municipal Open Commercial Zones, who shared with the San Lorenzo Valley entrepreneurs their experiences.
Page 10
The Councillor wants Open Trade Zones to be recognised as, "The most appropriate formula for business organisation, a commercial zone with an image and its own strategy and design for commercial supply, services, culture and leisure.
"A key factor is that there should be a high degree of participation from the local business people, within a framework of cooperation and involvement among both public and private sectors," Afonso Esquivel concluded.

Britons spend a week a year worrying about money NEW research from Which? shows people are struggling to cope with the financial downturn and Britons are now among the most economically vulnerable consumers in Europe. The gloomy outlook was published this week in the first Which? Quarterly Consumer Report which finds that British consumers say they spend on average more than three hours a week worrying about money, that’s seven solid days a year. In the midst of the tightest financial squeeze in Britain in nearly 100 years, the report shows debt levels during the recession at their highest since the 1980s and British households owing £1.5 trillion. Women and young people were found to have the highest levels of debt for their income. Falling incomes and declining standards of living are having a negative impact on life satisfaction, with just
27 July - 02 August 2012
53% of people in Britain satisfied with life overall. Three quarters of the British public describe the UK economy as ‘poor’ and half of the population believe it will only get worse over the coming 12 months. The report also reveals consumer mistrust in the banking system and 56% say they do not trust the Government to act in their interest. The Which? Quarterly Consumer Report also found: •Britain on the edge: Half of British consumers (48%) said they would struggle to cope with an unexpected cost. 35% are finding it difficult to cope on their current incomes, in the last month 18% of people used an authorised overdraft and 3% (approximately 765,000 households) took out a pay day loan. •Savings timebomb: Most Britons are struggling to
save 7p from every pound of income, a savings rate predicted to drop to just 5p by 2016. Compared to European countries, only Latvia and Lithuania save less of their income than the UK. •Household budget pinch: 43% of people expect to cut back on their spending on food in the coming months and more than half say they are cutting back on big-ticket household items such as holidays (57%) or socialising (56%). People are most likely to be worried about fuel (81%) and energy prices (79%). •Bearing the brunt: Young people (18-29 year olds) have borne the brunt of the impact on living standards with a fall in purchasing power of twice the national average (-1.8% compared to -0.9%) in the past 12 months, now at the lowest level since 2003. They also have more debt than any other age group – for every pound they earn
they owe 47p, compared to the national average of 21p. One in ten young people admitted to defaulting on a bill and one in five relied on loans from friends and family to get by in the past month. 45% say they always or often run out of money each month (compared with 38% of all consumers). Which? and other consumer groups is calling for compulsory personal finance education in schools and colleges to equip young people to manage their money. •Squeezed bottom: People earning the second lowest wage bracket (£12,376 – £21,424 per year) have seen the biggest deterioration in quality of life, from 69% reporting that they are “living comfortably” in 2003 to 48% in 2010, pushing them down to the level of those in the very bottom income group. Those on the lowest incomes (earning £12,376 or below per year) have the highest debt ratio meaning
they owe 37p for every £1 they earn compared to 10p for the highest income bracket. These two groups are together forming a new, larger group of working poor – the squeezed bottom. •New essentials: Only 7% of people are willing to spend any leftover money they have. This growing reluctance to spend has seen consumers reassess what they think are “essentials”. Our research shows consumers are less willing to cut back on broadband, mobiles and TV subscriptions. Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “Consumers in Britain are going through the tightest squeeze in their living standards since the 1920s. Many consumers are clinging to the edge of a financial cliff with savings at rock bottom and personal debt levels sky high. Shocking numbers of people say they are forced to
take on new forms of debt just to make ends meet, and many more would not cope with unexpected shocks to their incomes or household bills. “Which? wants to see confident consumers and strong businesses driving economic recovery, but the consumer has too often been an afterthought in the Government’s growth agenda. With this new report, we show just how well those with power, both in government and business, are doing at putting consumer wellbeing first.”

UK to ease gambling rules? A new report suggests that rules governing gambling should be eased, according to MPs. The Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee said that local councils should be allowed to permit betting shops to operate more than four high-stake gambling machines, which can accept stakes of up to ÂŁ100 and offer prizes of ÂŁ500. The Gambling Act which was set seven years ago in 2005 originally set out to allow the introduction of Las
Vegas-style super casinos across the country, with fruit machines offering unlimited payouts. However, the plans, proposed by then culture secretary Tessa Jowell, were watered down significantly in the face of fierce public opposition, with super casinos cast aside and the creation of the Gambling Commission to regulate the industry. The MPs say the commission was too bureaucratic and expensive, adding it was not
for Whitehall to decide on the location of casinos in the UK but local councils instead. John Whittingdale, Tory chairman of the committee, said: "Gambling is now widely accepted in the UK as a legitimate entertainment activity. "We took a lot of evidence in this inquiry, from all sides, and while we recognise the need to be aware of the harm caused by problem gambling, we believe that there is considerable scope to reduce and simplify the
current burden of regulation and to devolve decisionmaking to a more local level. "The 'reluctantly permissive' tone of gambling legislation over the last 50 years now looks outdated." The committee of MPs, from across the main parties, said the Government also needed to make it more attractive for online operators to base themselves in the UK. Taxes on the industry were too high, pushing most internet-based operations abroad, their research found.
First female US astronaut dies THE first female US astronaut has died after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Dr Sally Ride, 61, first went into space in 1983 aboard Challenger, on the seventh mission of the US space shuttle programme. She flew in two space missions, reaching nearly 350 hours in space. US President Barack Obama called her a "national hero and a powerful role model", and a woman who "inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars". "Sally's life showed us that there are no

limits to what we can achieve and I have no doubt that her legacy will endure for years to come." Nasa administrator Charles Bolden said Dr Ride "literally changed the face of America's space programme" and that "the nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers, and explorers". She had applied to be an astronaut in 1977, after seeing a NASA advert in her university's student newspaper. It was the first time the space agency had allowed applications from civilians - or from women. She was one of 35
people, including just six women, chosen from a pool of 8,000 applicants. On her foundation's website, Ride said of her historic foray into space: "The thing I'll remember most about the flight is that it was fun."

Paying cash it`s morally wrong!
WHILST the wealthy evade tax with complex schemes now at the other end of the scale a Treasury Minister has deemed that paying tradesmen cash-inhand is "morally wrong" because it can help workers avoid tax. Exchequer Secretary David Gauke made the claim after his speech outlining new Government plans to crack down on aggressive tax avoidance schemes. For example cleaners or gardeners who are paid in cash, could be taking money out of the UK economy. "Getting a discount with your plumber by paying cash in hand is something that is a big cost to the Revenue and means others have to pay more in tax," Mr Gauke said.
"I think it is morally wrong. It is illegal for the plumber but it is pretty implicit in those circumstances that there is a reason why there is a discount for cash. That is a large part of the hidden economy." The declaration prompted an angry reaction from campaigners, who insist the Government should be more focused on reforming the tax system. Tariq Dag Khan, from the tradesman recommendation website Rated People, said: "David Gauke’s comments that it is morally wrong to pay tradesmen in cash do little to help tradesmen who are struggling in a difficult economic climate. "The Government should
be providing guidance for alternatives to cash payments for tradesmen, rather than pointing the finger at an industry that is essential to the UK's economic recovery." There is no law against paying someone in cash or asking for it to happen but it can be a way for traders to avoid declaring all their income or dodging VAT. The Government loses about £2bn each year to the black economy as tradesmen fail to pay VAT or income tax by not declaring payments and keeping them "off the books".
Strike on the eve of Games is called off A STRIKE by British Border staff, set for yesterday (Thursday), over jobs and pay, was called off after progress was made in peace talks on Tuesday. Public and Commercial Services union members were set to stage a 24-hour walk-out on the eve of the Olympic Games opening ceremony in Stratford. Their aim was to “inflict maximum pain”on the Games, while the Government had threatened legal action to try to prevent the strike. The union said 800 new jobs would be created in the Border Agency and 300 in passport offices, which was enough for it to suspend the action.
Page 14
Mark Serwotka, the PCS leader, said the new jobs proved the Government had made huge mistakes in shedding thousands of jobs in recent years. The move, announced to the union during talks at the Home Office, represented “major progress”. Recruitment adverts were placed on websites on Wednesday morning for the new jobs in areas which included Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports, said the union. The union said the Government’s legal challenge was based on a claim that 12 staff in Paris and Brussels were being involved in the dispute, even they were not

covered by the issues. Mr Serwotka stressed that the dispute had not been resolved - and that there were a number of outstanding issues, including pay and compulsory redundancies. He added there would now be “significant” investment in 1,100 permanent new jobs.
Runaway boy, 11, is found on a plane heading for Italy MANCHESTER Airport officials are holding an urgent inquiry into how a boy of 11 crept on to a plane heading for Rome without a passport, ticket or boarding pass.
He was not discovered until he was well into the journey. And even then, the flight crew were tipped off by concerned passengers, wondering who was accompanying him. Liam Corcoran evaded security checks and found his way on to the Jet2.com flight on Tuesday after running away from his mother while on a shopping trip at nearby Wythenshawe Civic Centre. He is believed to have followed a family at Terminal 1 and was scanned by security staff, who failed to check whether he had any documents.
The youngster passed through a gate where he was not required to show a passport or boarding pass. Liam then made it on to Jet2. com flight LS791, destined for the Italian capital, and was not asked for a boarding-pass stub by cabin crew. Concerned passengers raised the alarm in mid-flight after realising Liam was alone, and the plane’s captain informed the authorities. The boy remained on board after landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport, and returned to Manchester on the same plane. He was met by his mother at around 9pm, after she had spent a worrying few hours earlier, desperate to know what had happened to him, before receiving a phone call. Manchester Airport spokesman Russell Craig said
Liam had evaded five separate security checks, but would still have had to pass though a number of scans. “This extremely serious matter is now being urgently investigated by officials from the airport and airline,” he said. “It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate. But the boy went through full security screening, so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised.” A Jet2.com spokesman said: “He cleared security at Manchester Airport without the necessary paperwork, but he had been through a full security search. “We have launched a full investigation into what is a serious incident, and the staff involved have been suspended pending the outcome.”

Jaguar’s grand news for workers
CAR-MAKERS Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are planning to create more than 1,100 new jobs in the West Midlands. The additional workers at their Castle Bromwich plant will support the launch of new Jaguar models, including the XF Sportbrake. Around eight out of 10 of Jaguar’s XF, XK and XJ models, which are made at the plant, are exported to more than 100 markets worldwide. Dr Ralf Speth, JLR chief executive, said: “Innovation in design, engineering and technology is at the core of our business. “And for the UK, this means we will continue to invest in new products, develop new technologies and enhance the skills of our employees. “The launch of our latest Jaguar models, including the new XF Sportbrake later this year, means it is a very exciting time for Jaguar. “These new models will attract new customers to the brand as we look to expand our global reach and further enhance our position in the market.”
27 July - 02 August 2012
Vince Cable, the Government’s Business Secretary, said: “This is fantastic news. The jobs will support the production of models and this expansion is a clear demonstration of JLR’s
continuing commitment and investment in the UK.” Upmarket Jaguar have sold more than 29,000 vehicles globally in the first six months of this year - up by 19% on the same period in 2011.
Tragedy strikes as beach landslide kills woman, 22 A 22-YEAR-OLD woman died after being buried under a huge landslide on a Dorset beach.
Charlotte Blackman’s boyfriend and his father were pulled to safety by bystanders on Burton Bradstock beach on Tuesday. Witnesses said Ms Blackman, from Derbyshire, was walking along the beach with the two men when they were caught up in the 400-tonne rock landslip. But despite a nine-hour search by emergency workers, they were unable to locate her, and Dorset Police later confirmed that her body had been found at around 9.40pm. The emergency services believe that heavy rain over the last few weeks, combined with the recent heatwave, caused the disaster. It comes two weeks after Somerset couple Rosemary Snell, 67, and Michael Rolfe, 72, were killed in a landslide at the Beaminster Tunnel, just nine miles away. The area has also been hit by severe flooding, which left much of the community
under water. Charlotte was named by her uncle, Douglas Blackman, who wrote on his Facebook page that he was “so very, very sad we lost Charlotte yesterday. “We will always remember her. My thoughts are with my brother and his family in their darkest hour.” Len Muggeridge was fishing off Burton Rocks when he heard a “large, thunder-like sound”. He added: “We looked up and half the cliff towards Freshwater had fallen down. Within 20 minutes, there were people tramping over the top of it, and then a second fall occurred.” Mr Muggeridge recalled that there had been two or three big falls over the last 15 years, as well as regular, smaller falls. “That cliff could come down at any time,” he said. Search crews used dogs and specialist listening
devices to try to locate the missing woman, amid fears of further rock falls at the site, known locally as Hive Beach. But after their arduous search operation, the emergency workers’ worst fears were realised. The beach forms part of a new World Heritage Site the historic Jurassic Coast, from Swanage in Dorset to Exmouth in Devon, sections of which have been crumbling into the sea for years. Only last week, Dorset Council issued a warning to visitors and walkers about the risk of landslides, following the heavy rain.

Our ‘Canarian Smile’ is such a hook for tourists! AFTER Tenerife and the Canaries as a whole reported a record year for in 2011, I visited Jorge Marichal, President of Ashotels, to find out just why we enjoyed this success. I also wanted to know what we can all do to ensure that the Tourism industry in the Canaries continues to flourish! Firstly, Jorge explained exactly what Ashotels is. “It is an association of hotels consisting of 219 members, covering the four islands of the Province of Santa Cruz,” he told me. “This association is responsible for in excess of 150,000 beds catering for visitors to the islands on a daily basis, but also responsible for supporting hotel owners and their employees.” Mr Marichal is the perfect person for this position. He has come from a development background, working for his father in construction and learning all about the business. Later, he also gained extensive
Page 16
knowledge of the hospitality and tourism businesses as CEO of Marylanza Hotel, in Los Cristianos. I asked Jorge what, in his opinion, were the main reasons for the success of the Canaries in 2011. “We have worked diligently over many years to make this achievement possible,” he said. “However, we must review this honestly and accurately. “In 2010 and 2011 there were issues in the Middle East, which meant more visitors looked closer to home for their family holidays and winter breaks. “What this has demonstrated to us is that we have to keep the warmth and generosity for which the Canarian people are renowned. “We mustn’t lose the Canarian Smile, and we have to work harder to ensure that we create experiences for our visitors, which makes them feel at home. This will be one of the fundamental reasons why visitors continue to visit us.”
Jorge went on to describe his background. “When I was growing up, the construction industry here in Spain and the Canaries was booming,” he said. “My parents, like my friends, were told to get an education, learn many skills and understand the industries that brought financial prosperity to the islands,. “However, many of my friends were tempted to leave their educations and work on the building sites, where they could earn far more money. “But when the construction industry failed in 2007, there were many casualties; many lost their jobs, lost their homes, because we took for granted how easy it was to obtain wealth at that time. “We have to go back to basics; we have to educate our youth while creating opportunities for them in the future.” When asked about the many advantages of living and working on the islands, Jorge said: “While fantastic incentives such as the
ZEC 4% corporation tax, and VAT on the islands being at JUST 7% as opposed to 20%-plus in Europe, tourism will still be the driving force behind the economy in the Canaries. “I do think that we are becoming the research-and-development zone for innovative technologies, in particular Green and ECO projects. “With continued investment into our communications infrastructure and travel connections, it is easy to see why we are emerging as an investment hotspot. “But we mustn’t lose sight of our roots. We must ensure that we create memorable experiences, which is the main reason why people visit the Canaries.” I asked Jorge about the criticism levelled at all-inclusive resorts, to which he replied: “All-inclusive is a desirable product for many tourists. “Put simply, if we didn’t offer it, we would lose those tourists
to destinations which do want this product. We believe that the proportion of all-inclusive hotels is well within balance. “I would like to see more synergies between business owners and all-inclusive hotel owners to encourage tourists to leave the resort - to experience the surrounding areas. “We are more than happy to promote quality experiences outside of the hotels - if approached!” I always put this same question to all the people I speak with: “If you could wave a magic wand and fast-forward five years, what would your vision of the Canaries look like?” Jorge raised the famous “Canarian Smile” and said: “I see opportunities - huge opportunities. I would like to see an abundance of career and job opportunities, and an end to the
class system, so that everyone can enjoy the same standard of living as you and I do, Christopher. “We should be the breeding ground for entrepreneurial innovations, the leading touristic destination Europe, if not the World.” It is evident that tourism and the islands are close to Jorge’s heart and he, in my opinion, is the perfect person to spearhead the success. “He’s young dynamic, intelligent and very open to synergies that create mutual opportunities between business owners and hoteliers. If you would like to put ideas forward to be heard by the President of Ashotels, then please contact me by email at christopher.pennington@ canarianweekly.com and I will have them answered by Jorge Marichal at our next sit-down.

Accion del Sol News
Lost and lonely, but somebody must know these poor pooches THESE three dogs were brought into Accion del Sol during the terrible fires that have recently ravaged our beautiful Island. The hapless trio, which were all picked up in Guia De Isora, were not microchipped, and Accion staff believe they may have been let loose to avoid the fires. If you recognise them, please call the dog refuge on 922 778 630 for more information. Last Friday (20th July), some of Accion’s avid supporters and volunteers, together with Atlantic Whale Foundation followers, completed a walk around the streets of Santa Cruz to raise awareness about animal welfare in Tenerife. The venture proved to be a huge success, with members of the public stopping to admire some of the refuge dogs, as well as asking many questions about Accion Del Sol’s work in the community. The dogs enjoyed their walk, and all the attention, while the volunteers handed out leaflets explaining just what Accion del Sol is all about. The dog sanctuary, sponsored by German charity Aktiontier, intends to organise the walks on a regular basis, meeting in various locations, so please call the refuge if you would like to be
involved If not, you might like to become a Accion del Sol volunteer and help with dog-walking at the refuge. The refuge is situated at Poligono De Industrial Estate, Granadilla, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER, the Parque Eolica, where the windmills are, and is open to the public Monday-Friday, from 3-6pm.
Live Arico is still open Live Arico - Press Release
Community News
TO put things straight, this is the situation. Live Arico, the legallyregistered charitable Association is not closed. Finca Chasagua, the Atogo refuge housing our dogs, has a closure order. This was no surprise to us. There have been legal problems with the installation for many years, even before our time there. After moving there in 2010, it became apparent almost immediately that much work would have to be done to improve the installation to a standard acceptable for Live Arico and its dogs. However, any work was blocked, denounced by neighbours as being done without a licence, and when we applied for said licences, they were declined. We have been in an impossible situation. The Cabildo have offered a plot of land in Fasnia on which a refuge has been built. In respect of the closure order, the Cabildo have agreed to allow our dogs to go to the Fasnia refuge, with the condition that Eugenio de Mommio resign from the Association, and has no further

The ‘Silent Lions’ are ready to have a voice MEMBERS of the Lions Club of Arona, Las Galletas and Costa Silencio are fully aware that not many people know about them outside their own community circles. True, they are well-known at Arona Town Hall, with whom they work in close harmony. Overall, though, these Lions are a relatively unknown quality. That is why they have regarded themselves as The Silent Lions as far as publicity is concerned. Until now! They believe that with the onset of a new Lions’ year, it is time for them to show their teeth and roar into the future under new President Luis J Salas. He will be inducted at the President’s Night ceremony on 8th September, to be held at Westhaven Bay, Costa del Silencio, where he will take over officially from outgoing President Anny Noenickx. Club stalwart Nicole Matthijs, who has volunteered to provide publicity for the Lions, said: “We feel that it being the beginning of a new Lions year, it would be good timing to start getting a voice and inform the public about what we do.” She added: “We would like to thank our leaving president, Anny, for all her support and leadership in the past year.” Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month in Silencio at Cath’s Corner, Coral Mar, at 5pm, and they comprise a healthy mix of nationalities, featuring Spanish, Germans, English and Belgians. Several Lions’ projects over the past year entailed working closely together with Arona Town Hall. They included: *Assisting in the abused wives and family centre in Arona *Giving clothes and food packs to families in need.

contact with the refuge to ensure that no further abandoned dogs are taken in to the new refuge. Eugenio has agreed to this, as the dogs need to be moved to their new home as soon as possible. As a committee, this pains us deeply but we have no choice at this time, we have to move to Fasnia as we cannot stay in Granadilla. We thank Eugenio from our hearts for all his work over the past 12 years, and recognise the sacrifices he has made to achieve this. On the plus side, this can be good for the dogs. A new opportunity, the refuge will be under the control of FECAPAP (The Canarian Federation of Animal and Plant Protection Associations) with Live Arico in collaboration. The dogs remain the legal property of Live Arico and we will continue with adoptions in an effort to reduce the numbers. From a financial point of view, we have an obligation to support our dogs, and for this reason our shops remain open and fundraising continues. We ask for your continued support in this area. It is also very important to us that our debts with Hospivet Sur and La Granja are paid off. We will publish the state of affairs at monthly intervals so our supporters can see how much we have raised, and how we have divided it between our creditors and the upkeep of our dogs.
*Tree-planting last November in Valle San Lorenzo’s El Almendro, together with three classrooms of children from different schools *Taking children up to Arona’s green energy plant in February to learn all about green energy and its beneficial effects on the environment *Supporting a fantastic project for mentallychallenged people in El Mojón, in which dogs were used to help these people come out of their shells; teaching them how to count and read, and the skills to be able to exist more comfortably in society *Donation for Ritmania Dance School’s Christmas outfits for the youngsters On a personal level, The Silencio Lions also supported little Maisie in her battle to beat eye cancer For all the above to be possible, and to provide continued support for the projects, the Silencio Lions have to raise money. Their main income is derived from the charity shop in Costa del Silencio, Race Nights in different bars on Coral Mar Square and a barbecue there on the second Sunday of every month, from 3pm. In addition, several club members organise events at their homes Nicole added: “We would like to thank everybody who has participated in any of our fund-raisers and hope you continue to do so. A big thank-you also to all the volunteers for the shop, and the various fund-raisers. “If you feel attracted to Lionism and want to contribute in any way, please contact us on 676 575 911. “We are currently in desperate need of helping hands in our charity shop on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 11am-2pm. 1.30pm.

RUBY RHOMBUS performed last Sunday afternoon. She also sang a bit. This is her story. Arising at the crack of noon, I found Mother at the kitchen sink, hands in the water. Hoisting her under the armpits, I carried her back to bed. She didn’t notice. I have been looking after my own skin for years, both literally and the other one, and cannot overstress the benefits of sun-cream factor 220. It has a hint of blue, which blends naturally with my pale, northern European complexion. At the gig, Compère Xombie sidled up, a whisper poised on his thin lip: “Ruby, where’s my 75 Euros?” “You are not even getting your dignity back, Lead-free.” “Fair enough, I suppose. Still nursing that crazy old wreck?” “Leave my mother out of this, you … oh, you mean the car! The mechanics in Tailpipe say my dilithium crystals are crumbling.” “I could have told you that,” he quipped, swaggering off. Blip, the mute mime artist, motioned that he’d like to buy me a pint and a Cornish pasty. I accepted with grace, yet studied him secretively out of the corner of both eyes. Foolish me, I recall that I did all the talking! It’s only four hours since our first meeting. yet I feel I have known him all afternoon. And if my mute mime artist desires to know me better, I shall be here looking out for the signs.

Elliot Silverstein's influential comedy western starring Jane Fonda and Lee Marvin. Catherine 'Cat' Ballou is visiting her rancher father Frankie when she learns that a corporation is aggressively intent on snatching his lands. Realising her father needs some serious protection, Cat gathers together a small group of people for the purpose, and also hires the once-notorious gunfighter Kid Shelleen. But she soon discovers he's now no more than a permanently sozzled drunk, and unlikely to be of any use against the mean killing machine Tim Strawn, who is in the developers' pay. But, as things take darker turn, Cat finds the strength and determination to fight back, by any means necessary. With its mix of daft comedy, songs and classic revenge-western theme, the film is great fun - and it's difficult not to imagine that it provided the creative spark for Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles a decade later. Director: Elliot Silverstein Starring: Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin, Michael Callan, Dwayne Hickman, Nat 'King' Cole, Stubby Kaye.
The Mentalist Channel 5, 14:15 Russet Potatoes. Series 1, episode 18. Drama series following the work of an investigator who uses his razor-sharp skills of observation to solve crimes. A car salesman arrives at the precinct carrying what he believes to be a sack of potatoes, but is actually the body of a dead woman.

Button claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory in Hungary in 2006 and also topped the podium last year, taking advantage of wet conditions on both occasions. Hamilton won in Hungary in 2007 and 2009 and nearly made it a hat-trick of wins last year, leading for much of the race but eventually finishing fourth. Ingane Yami Charity Golf Pearly Grey Ocean Club, Callao Salvaje and Ingane Yami children’s village have been linked since 2009 when, developer, James Beckley put the idea forward to his employees of helping to build a village in South Africa for orphan kids whose parents have died of aids.
Pearly Grey Ocean Club Pearly Grey Ocean Club is a holiday ownership complex, situated in a very unique location in Tenerife, Spain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and offering uninterrupted views across to the picturesque island of La Gomera. Based in the village of Callao Salvaje, it’s just 10 minutes drive away from Playa de Las Americas and 20 minutes from the airport. The village itself is off the main road and away from the hustle and bustle of the busier holiday resorts, but still offers a wide selection of bars and restaurants to meet every taste. Our 112 self-catered apartments combine studios, one bedroom and two bedrooms.
Mariana Reggiani, Administration Coordinator, Pearly Grey told Canarian Weekly, “We were all touched by the stories and the dream has slowly became true.” “Since 2009 we have done many events in order to collect money for
the cause and the fantastic thing about this project is that the whole PG staff has joined in the adventure and enjoyed the journey.” “We have done onsite raffles, car boot sales, fancy dresses, watersport challenges, a Teide walk, a Blue Trail challenge, Ocean Swim, a gala night, a Kilimanjaro climbing and three Annual golf tournaments (including this one in Amarilla Golf)” To-date Pearly Grey have collected 47,347 euros, the idea is to build a house called Pearly Grey and to maintain the kids living in the house; each one housing six children and a foster mum.
This years tournament takes place on Saturday 4th August at Amarilla Golf. It starts at 9.30am and finishes with a gourmet buffet. The format for the tournament is Texas Scramble, in teams of four.
Texas Scramble – format and rules 1. All team players tee off as normal.
with the maximum being 8 shots.
2. The most favourably positioned tee shot is then chosen by the team captain and the ball lies where it is.
6. If at the end of the competition two or more teams have the same score, the winners shall be decided by counting back the last nine holes played, and the team with the lowest score will win.
3. The rest of the team then drop their balls to land no further than one club length away from the chosen ball on the fairway or rough, or 6 inches on the green, and then played as normal. Then, the most favourably positioned shot is chosen again, and so on, until the ball is holed.
If it is still a draw, then the first nine holes will be counted back to decide a winner.
4. Each team member must use at least 4 (four) of their tee shots during the round.
If it is still a draw, then a sudden death hole by hole matchplay system will take place. The first team to win a hole outright will then be deemed as winners of the competition.
5. 10% of the total team handicap will be deducted from the round score to give a final total score,
7. Any player or team seen or found cheating will be automatically disqualified.

The Briefs ITV1, 9:00pm ITV1’s new two-part documentary, The Briefs, takes us into the cut-throat world of criminal law, following the lawyers from a Manchester firm as they represent clients on cases ranging from drug dealing to blackmail to murder. “Everybody on the face of it is against our client. The police are against him. He feels the court is against him. The prosecutor is against him. He thinks the judge is against him. So we're his only friend.” – Franklin Sinclair, Tuckers Solicitors With unprecedented access to Britain’s busiest legal aid-funded law practice, these programmes show privileged conversations between lawyer and client, and follow the cases from police station to court, and even to prison. In the first programme, the lawyers represent a drug dealing mum and a man on trial for blackmailing a footballer’s family. In the second episode, we experience the unique marketing techniques lawyers’ use, the case of a performance poet accused of benefit fraud, a particularly emotive murder, and a gay couple whose fights always seem to end up in a police station.

Tenerife tourist figures THE tourism figures for June have been released and showed that a total of 399,605 tourists stayed here during the month.
This represents an increase of 4 percent over the same month last year. Hotels show an increase of 8.4%, but non-hotel establishments show a decline of 3.1% in June. The vice-president and chief executive of the Cabildo Insular de Turismo, Carlos Alonso, explains that, "as we anticipated in June we’ve already begun to dilute the effects of the Arab Spring, which leads us to be cautiously optimistic and confident that this year we will maintain similar figures to those of 2011." Alonso also emphasised an increase in the British market - 3.6 percent more than last year. He said, "It confirms the favourable performance of the sector but is clearly insufficient to reduce the
devastating economic crisis that we live in." Statistics confirm an increase in foreign tourists by 3.9 percent for the Island with a total of 269,983 tourists in June; this is the second month showing a positive, after three months of decline. This growth is driven by the success of markets such as UK (+5.5%), Netherlands (+9.9%), France (+1.1%), Ireland (+9.4%), Nordic (+2.9%), Russia (+40.9%) and Eastern Europe (+27.7%). However, other markets fell such as Germany (-4.8%), Belgium (-7%) and Italy (-19%) continued to show signs of weakness in the month. In regard to the Spanish market, in June it saw an increase of 4.3 percent with 129,622 visitors, so this is the first positive month so far this year. In general visitors stayed 7 days in June, slightly less compared to last year. The south saw a slight increase on the whole
where as the north of the island suffered a 2.2% drop in visitors. From an annual perspective, approximately 2.5 million visitors came to
the island, compared to 2011, a drop of 2.8%. Data from the first half Tenerife has stayed in the first half of the year a total
of 2,403,396 tourists, which means a decrease of 2.8 percent over the same period last year. Even though Brits increased during the
month of June as an annual figure there is a decline, only the Swedish, Russian and Eastern European markets have shown an increase.
EasyJet profits really are up, up and away! EASYJET profits soared as customers turned their backs on the miserable, wet conditions rain Northern Europe and flew to the sunshine. The Budget airline posted a 10.5% rise in third-quarter revenues - in the three months to the end of June - and issued full-year profit guidance ahead of the analyst average of £272m. The revenue of Europe’s
27 July - 02 August 2012
second-largest, low-cost carrier rose to £1.03bn, boosted by strong demand on beach routes in Europe because of the poor weather. EasyJet said seats flown grew by 7.5% to 17.9 million during the period, while passengers carried increased by 10.9% to 16 million. Carolyn McCall, the company’s chief executive, said: “The continued strong operational and financial
performance of the business, combined with the fall in the price of jet fuel, means that profit before tax for the year ending 30th September is anticipated to be in the range of £280m to £300m. Last month, easyJet said it planned to cut flights to and from Madrid by 20%, and would no longer base crew and aircraft there from next winter because the location delivered the lowest returns
of all its bases. Earlier this year the group’s founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, suffered a setback after the airline’s shareholders voted in favour of a multi-million-pound pay package for its executives. Sir Stelios was opposed to the deal, which means that 10 easyJet executives will receive shares worth around £8m in three years, provided they meet their business targets.

I say grey hair to get across a colour example to my clients. But once and for all, let me stress that there is no such colour as grey where hair is concerned. Hair is pigmented, just like many natural things around us, It is a living, growing substance like our skin and nails. We say grey hair because that’s what it looks like on our heads - grey! But look closer and you’ll see that it’s actually lost its pigment and turned “white”. And, of course, just as you would mix black paint and white to create grey, then this is how the mix of colours makes your hair appear grey. No one produces grey hair. They are just strands which, for one reason or another, have lost their will to produce the correct colour, through age, stress, cancer, alopecia, illness and a whole host of other reasons. Even pregnancy can trigger the halt of hair colour production. Grey hair also loses its texture as the colour leaves and becomes more coarse and wiry. It is also through the colour change that the hair stops producing the sebum (the natural grease that lubricates the hair follicle). Thus, we see drier, grey hair which needs to be moisturised more often. As for the debate as to whether you “colour” or “leave it to go white”, well, I think you can guess my opinion. But some of my clients do have white hair, and it looks great on them. I would never suggest a colour, but that’s dependant on the age group. I have a very good friend who colours her hair every 10 to 14 days to get rid of the white. It’s a real chore, but she’s only in her late 30s and is 100% white-haired. Can you imagine the years she would pile on if she were to stay “natural”? It’s all a matter of taste and self-opinion, but I don’t like to see women turning white and leaving their natural colour until they are 50 at least. It does age a woman, but not so much a man - but don’t ask me why!

Government to turn clock back to make abortion law firmer FOETAL malformations, a valid reason for abortions in Spain, will soon be ruled out as the Government goes back to strengthening the law on terminations.
Government Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, of the Popular Party (PP), says a legislative reform is being prepared for the autumn. It will review the current abortion system, set up in 2010 by the previous Socialist administration, to bring Spain in line with other European countries. Gallardón has told Madrid daily newspaper El Razon that he plans to eliminate “on demand” abortion until week 14, and get back to something similar to the previous system. That allowed pregnancy terminations only in the cases of rape, physical or mental risk for the mother and foetal malformation. But the latter reason will now be ruled out. Pro-choice groups and leftwing politicians say the decision attacks women’s rights and will align Spain with fundamentalist countries, while pro-lifers have labelled it “historical progress”. Gallardón, former Mayor of Madrid, faced an angry backlash
earlier this year after blaming “structural gender violence” for pressuring women into seeking terminations. But this is the strongest sign that the Government will reverse a liberalisation of the abortion law, introduced under Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in 2010. Gallardón has argued that many women were forced to seek abortions because of the lack of support available to them. “We cannot be indifferent to the situation of many women, who see their right to be mothers violated because of the pressure placed on them by certain structures around them,” he said. “No woman should be forced to renounce motherhood because of family, work or social conflict.” Mariano Rajoy’s Government had promised in January to revoke a clause allowing girls aged 16 and 17 to have abortions without parental consent. But the Justice Minister's comments confirmed fears among leftist MPs that the PP planned to go even further in overturning the abortion reforms passed by the previous
socialist administration. The 2010 law gave women the legal right to choose to have an abortion, on demand, up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, or 22 weeks in cases where the mother’s health is at risk, or the foetus shows serious deformities. Previously, women could have a legal abortion only in cases of rape, serious deformity, or when the mother’s mental or physical health was threatened. Most of the 115,000 abortions carried out in 2009, the year before the reform, were performed at private clinics. They were justified on the grounds that the pregnancy posed a “psychological risk" to the woman. Consuelo Abril, of COMPI, an umbrella organisation for women’s equality associations in Spain, said: “We should be free to make our own decisions about our own bodies, and that is what needs to enshrined in the law. “It is clear that Gallardón has no understanding of this issue. If a woman can be coerced into having an abortion, she can also be forced to have the child against her will, by conservative families which pressurise against abortion.”
Not to be sniffed at! Children can now have nasal flu spray A NEW nasal spray vaccine, just licensed by the medical regulators, is to be made available for all children in Britain each winter - but not until 2014 at the earliest.
So if you are discussing white hair in your salon, please do not be not offended if the word “grey” comes up. We are just telling the truth about what’s going on with your hair, and just remember: “grey” hair does not exist!
It is a major shift in UK immunisation policy, and it means that up to nine million kids, aged from two to 17, will be eligible for the vaccine. Until now, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recommended that children with underlying health conditions only can have the traditional flu jab. In the past, scientists
maintained that healthy children were unlikely to become severely ill with seasonal flu - and that they developed long-lasting immunity from it. But JCVI experts believe children spread the disease to more vulnerable people, such as the elderly, and feel that vaccination is now worthwhile for everyone. Even if just one-third of the youngsters use the new nasal spray, flu cases across the country would drop by 40%. That would mean 11,000 fewer hospital admissions and 2,000 fewer deaths. Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: “Severe
winter flu and its complications can make people really ill and can kill, particularly those who are weak and frail. This is why we already offer vaccinations to the most at-risk groups. “We accept the advice of our expert committee that rolling out a wider programme could further protect children, with even a modest take-up helping to protect our most vulnerable.” The £100m-a-year programme is mooted for 2014 at the earliest, says the Department of Health. The large number of doses, all delivered in a period of four to six weeks, means the manufacturer needs time to scale-up production. Scientists say the new spray vaccine gives children much better protection than the traditional jab. Sarah Gilbert, Professor of Vaccinology at Oxford University, said it contained a live flu virus which had been altered so that it could not cause a full-blown infection. But it still triggered a robust immune response. She added: “The virus is coldadapted, so it replicates only in the nose, where temperatures are 34 degrees. “It can’t survive in the lungs, where temperatures are slightly higher. So you do infect children, but they don’t get the disease.” But Prof Gilbert warned of a small risk that children could spread the virus from their nose, and that they would probably have to stay away from elderly relatives for a few days after vaccination.

Internet could help with Quest is on to uncover awareness of skin cancer that Holy Grail of life THE number of Britons their 50s affected by the most dangerous type of skin cancer has quadrupled in the last 30 years. In 1981, nearly 500 people in the 50-59 bracket were diagnosed with malignant melanoma, and that figure soared to almost 1,950 a year by 2010, according to Cancer Research UK. Today, almost five people are diagnosed daily with the disease, which can prove fatal if discovered at a late stage. It shows that the number of malignant melanoma cases across all age groups is increasing. In 2010, 12,800 people in the UK were diagnosed with the disease compared with 12,100 a year earlier. But University of Edinburgh researchers are finding new ways to help people recognise the signs of skin cancer earlier. They want to see if using webbased images could be more successful at helping people recognise skin abnormalities. Team leader Professor
Jonathan Rees said: “People’s idea of what skin cancer looks like is limited to three or four images, which are widely used to promote awareness of the disease. “But we don’t think this goes far enough with helping people identify the problem and going to their doctor. “Our team in Edinburgh are working to use the internet and the potential it offers to access many images.” The professor added: “It’s a bit like bird spotting - using pictures as a guide to what malignant melanoma could look like, and helping people make a better decision about seeing their doctor. “It is worrying that melanoma rates are on the rise. But, if caught early, melanoma can be treated very successfully. “So if we can develop a better system of encouraging people to go to the doctor, this could, potentially, save a great deal of lives.” Sara Hiom, director of information at Cancer Research
UK, said: “We know that cancer survival in Britain lags behind the best in Europe, and this is probably because of a combination of many factors, including late diagnosis. “Melanoma is a largely preventable disease. People can reduce their chance of developing skin cancer in the first place if they protect their skin from sunburn. “But it is also important that people are aware of the warning signs for malignant melanoma. “Look out for changes in size, shape or colour of a mole, freckle or normal patch of skin - these should be reported to a GP without delay. “In particular, look for moles or freckles that are asymmetrical, with uneven colours or borders, larger than a pencil top eraser, are itchy or bleed. “The chances are that this won’t turn out to be cancer. But if it is, spotting it early could make a real difference to the outcome.”
THE challenge to identify genes which will enable people to live beyond 100 is well and truly on. A £6.45m Genomics X Prize has enticed a US team, led by genetic entrepreneur Dr Jonathan Rothberg, to attempt to crack the genetic clues code which will virtually guarantee a long, healthy life. The doctor’s group, along with any other contenders, will be given 30 days to work out the full DNA code of 100 centenarians at a cost of no more than $1,000 per genome. The search begins in September next year and, under the competition’s rules, research teams have until May 2013 to register. Dr Rothberg’s team, from Life Technologies Corporation in California, are the first to formally enter. “This is a good start towards finding the fountains of youth,” he said. Scientists believe people who reach a very old age may have certain, rare changes
in their genes which protect against common diseases of later life, such as heart disease and cancer. And the doctor told BBC News: “One hundred people will give you a hint. One thousand will make you reasonably sure. Ten thousand will let you say, ‘Hey, these are the genes involved in cancer or heart disease’.” Already, 100 people aged 100 have donated their DNA for the project. If these genes can be identified by analysing the DNA codes of centenarians, it will help scientists search for new medical treatments and, perhaps, ways to prolong life. However, many sample DNA sequences will be required to get the accuracy needed to pinpoint changes on the scale of a few genetic letters among the three billion in the human genome. Dr Craig Venter, originator of the prize, was one of the leaders in the race to sequence the first human genome, which was completed in 2003. Dr Venter and his team built
the genome of a bacterium from scratch and put it into a cell to make a synthetic life form. But he says he could never have imagined that genome sequencing would come this far in so little time. He told the BBC: “I can't emphasise enough how impressed I am with the progress of technology and the dropping of the cost. “If they can do a human genome in two hours with one little machine, it’s just stunning. We have come a long way.” The X Prize Foundation offers awards for solutions to modern scientific challenges, from space to the human genome. Any data gleaned from the X Prize will be shared with other scientists in the field, to aid the quest for insights into ageing. It is seen as the threshold at which DNA sequencing technology becomes cheap enough to be used widely in medicine, helping in diagnosis and in matching drugs to a patient's genetic make-up.
Cheesy way to slice the risk of diabetes CHEESE is the stuff of nightmares and weight problems, so they say, yet just two slices a day can cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
That’s the findings of researchers although, needless to say, it goes against current health guidelines, which advise reducing dairy products and other high-fat foods to help prevent the illness. British and Dutch researchers looked at the diets of 16,800 healthy adults and 12,400 patients with type 2 diabetes from eight European countries, including the UK. They discovered that those who ate at least 55gms of cheese a day - around two slices - were 12% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The risk fell by the same amount for those who ate 55g of yoghurt a day. But despite the latest findings, campaigners warned against gorging on cheese and other dairy products in the hope of warding off diabetes.
“It is too simplistic to concentrate on individual foods,” said Dr Iain Frame, director of research at the charity Diabetes UK. “We recommend a healthy, balanced diet, which is rich in fruit and vegetables and
27 July - 02 August 2012
low in salt and fat. “This study gives us no reason to believe that people should change their dairy intake in an attempt to avoid the condition.” Yet the Atkins Diet allows dairy products and it never harmed my health - or my weight!

Hot stuff, and remedies WELL, it has certainly been hot enough, even without the forest fires to take into consideration. I have just come back from rainy England, so I am not complaining about the warm weather. Unfortunately, many of us are not lucky enough to have air-conditioning at home, but there are many commonsense ideas for keeping cool: regular cool showers, limiting your physical activities, particularly at the hottest times of day and drinking lots of fluids. If you find yourself getting irritable, I find a large glass of wine helps with that problem! That’s just me, though, and not really anything to do with the heat. Seriously, there are also many things you can do to make your home more comfortable. Many of you will know that Deco Nuevo has moved to smaller premises and that we now have an office rather than a shop. This doesn’t mean we can’t still offer all the services as previously. We pride ourselves on working with some of the best tradesmen and suppliers on the Island, And, of course, by going through Deco Nuevo, you can deal with us in English, and we can oversee everything on your behalf, whether you are on the Island or not. So what can you do to limit your home from heat exposure? Well, one of the most obvious is to install ceiling fans which will move the air around in your home. They also have the advantage of giving you that lovely colonial feel.
Page 44
Perhaps you’d rather have an air-conditioning system to cover the whole house, or individual rooms. Maybe you would like to remove those heavy curtains, and replace them with some light, fresh voiles, which will blow around in the breeze. In addition, you might choose to install fly-screens, which will allow you to keep your windows open, but also secure and allow fresh air to flow into your rooms. If you are lucky to have an outside space, be it a terrace or a garden, ensure that you have a shady area where you can take cover from direct sun. This could be in the form of an umbrella or fixed shade, or a retractable sun-blind, which you can adjust according to
the position of the sun as it moves around. Maybe you also need some new, outside furniture so that you can make the most of our lovely weather by eating outside or just relaxing there. A comfortable sunbed and a large umbrella, so you are outside in the fresh air but in the shade, is probably one of the best places to spend these hot afternoons with a good book. So, if you need any of the above items to help you cope with the heat, just give us a ring on (0034) 922 789 729, or call in to our office in Parque Margarita (next to the old Travel Shop) in the mornings. We are more than happy to have a chat with you and see how we can help you.
Money grows on trees OUR gardens are often a sanctuary of colour and calm, and the result of sweat, toil and no small expense.
3. Rose standards 4. Olive trees 5. Rare lilies 6. Bonsais 7. Miniature palm trees 8. Magnolia trees 9. Daphne shrubs 10. Conifers
However, everything is not rosy in the gardens of Britain, with the revelation that one in every five (20 per cent) gardens have been pilfered by greenfingered thieves in the last 12 months alone. The research, conducted by MORE TH>N Home Insurance, found that from Kent to Cumbria, Brits are seeing their hanging baskets swiped, flower-beds uprooted, towering topiaries replaced by damp outlines and voids left where precious plants once stood proud. What’s more, according to almost a quarter of those surveyed (23 per cent) it’s a problem that’s getting worse every year. From stunning rose standards to beautiful bay trees, gardens are rich-pickings for burglars in the know, who are taking £72.21 worth of horticultural hauls with each raid – proving that money does grow on trees. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is the front of the house that is most often targeted, with 70 per cent of respondents claiming to have had pot plants and trees swiped from right outside their front doors. And as soon as these objects have been uprooted they are used to decorate the thieves’ own gardens, sold on to dealers or offloaded at car boot sales. Additionally, it is the valuable plant specimens and carefully cultivated shrubs that are the objects of thieves’ affections.
Looking across the regions, it is not ‘The Garden of England’ where green-fingered thievery is in full bloom, but the North East – with 29 per cent of plant theft victims living in the area. Following closely behind is the North West (25 per cent) and East Anglia (24 per cent), while garden-proud homeowners in the East Midlands can sleep easy at night knowing their region has the lowest rate of plant theft in the country (13 per cent). According to Janet Connor, Managing Director for MORE TH>N: “As we’ve seen from recent incidents of lead being stolen from roofs, thieves are casting their nets ever wider in the search for objects to steal. And as this research unfortunately shows, garden plants and trees are now firmly on the list. “Cultivating a beautiful garden is by no means a cheap endeavour, with many items, such as Bay trees, commanding price tags of £60 or more. But all the hard work and money spent on creating a lovely outdoor space can be ruined overnight if the garden is an easy target for thieves.” Gardening expert and broadcaster Bob Flowerdew offers handy hints and tips and help guard your gardens.
TOP 10 MOST STOLEN PLANTS AND TREES 1. Hanging baskets 2. Bay trees
1. ‘This plant belongs to…’ – The simplest deterrent is to mark all of your plants with your postcode. Use an indelible
marker pen and boldly write your postcode all over plant labels (which can be concealed within the roots or the leaves before planting) containers, vases, urns and tubs. 2. Chain it up! – Hanging baskets are by far the easiest target. Make their support fixing secure and difficult to undo by using wire, small bolts or even an unobtrusive lock and chain. When it comes to securing plants, a weatherproof bicycle lock attached to the containers will make life difficult for any thief. And for larger tubs and planters, a short chain or cable bolted to the container and fixed to a concreted bolt will make it impossible to remove the plants intact. 3. Tug of war – Create bigger holes for your plants and carefully place layers of plastic netting within the roots as you plant them. This will make it infernally difficult to either dig or pull up! 4. Go large – Large, heavy containers are more difficult to steal than smaller ones. Choose bigger planting containers and for the largest add extra weight with broken paving slabs and heavier soil-based compost. 5. Be a prickly customer – Thorny and prickly plants are harder to remove and can act as a barrier to other plants. Position thorny and spiny plants and shrubs (such as Berberis, Yuccas, Briars, and Brambles) around the edges of containers, at vulnerable access points, such as low walls and fences, and around the base or up through the middle of valuable specimens. 6. Take a picture – A photo of a specimen or even of bedding will aid both identification and the claim.

Would you Adam & Eve it? Vauxhall has gone Glam VAUXHALL has unveiled their new city car, which, they believe, will beat the MINI and Fiat 500 at their own game.
“Adam” is the company’s most exciting new model in years, with its stylish design, premium materials, hi-tech gadgets and huge scope for personalisation, Vauxhall are aiming to trump their rivals by offering over one million different possible trim and colour combinations. Mark Adams, Vice-president of design at GM Europe, said: “No other car in this segment can be individualised as much as Adam. It’s very unlikely that you’ll find two identical Adams out there.” Regardless of combination, it’s clear that Vauxhall have nailed the stylish part of the brief. The feature line around the door handles is lifted from the Astra GTC, while the blade crease on the flanks and eagle-eye headlights are both signature Vauxhall design cues. The wraparound windscreen and cut-off A and C-pillars with the Adam logo are unique, and the result is a look that can more than hold its own in this style-driven end of the market. To enhance the premium feel, the headlining can be upgraded to a design dotted with LEDs that mimic the night sky. And no car apart from a Rolls-Royce Phantom, offers anything similar. Alternatively, you can have the headlining finished in sky blue or with a chequered
flag. Then there are the gloss panels and soft-touch dash that help to give the Adam a touch of class. The machine will be available in three trims: Jam, Glam and Slam. But Vauxhall won’t say what kit comes on which models until closer to the car’s September launch. There is, however, a host of gadgets, including a seveninch touchscreen display for sat-nav and Internet-based apps. There’s also a heated steering wheel and a parkassist system which will park the Adam for you. Lowered suspension is likely to be fitted to the rangetopping Slam model, along with 17-inch wheels.
To help mark it out, it will also come with a contrasting roof as standard and sportier features, like a rear spoiler. For starters, the engine lineup will kick off with a 69bhp 1.2-litre petrol, while a 1.4-litre will be offered with 86bhp or 99bhp. Stop-start will be available on each of the engines, and a five-speed manual gearbox will come as standard. Towards the end of 2013 the Adam will be the first Vauxhall to get a new, small-capacity petrol engine, thought to be a three-cylinder turbo, like Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost. I It should offer around 115bhp along with economy of 60mpg and CO2 emissions under 110g/km. Vauxhall will introduce a new six-speed manual gearbox.
To compete in this market, a car needs to be fun to drive, and the Adam has all the right ingredients. It’s marginally longer than a MINI, but has a 30mm wider track, which will boost
stability, while MacPherson strut front suspension will help improve the car’s responses. But Vauxhall realise the Adam will spend most of its time in town, so they have
fitted it with a Fiat 500-style “City” button, which boosts steering assistance to make low-speed manoeuvres easier. The Adam will be available to order once it has been unveiled officially at the Paris
Motor Show in September. But UK deliveries won’t be made until January. Prices should start at around £11,000; this undercuts the MINI, but not the smaller Fiat 500, which costs from £9,960
Excuse me sir, your car says it needs servicing FORGET booking your car in for its regular service! Remarkably, your car will be able to tell your dealer when it needs to go in for a checkup in the near future. New technology developed by Volvo uses the GSM data network to link workshops with a vehicle’s onboard computer. It means technicians get constant updates on a vehicle’s fault codes,
27 July - 02 August 2012
mileage and even the level of wear and tear on vital components. And the car doesn’t even need to be taken to the garage to get the once-over. So service intervals can be tailored to the needs of an individual vehicle, rather than being scheduled on a one-size-fits-all basis. A car that’s being driven hard and experiencing a lot of wear and tear can be brought in more often than
one which is only used occasionally. The system will be used in commercial vehicles initially, and will make its debut in Volvo’s truck range next year. A Volvo spokesman for the firm’s car division said: “We don’t have any plans to introduce this at the moment, but it’s something that could be introduced in the future.”

so hard and you'll see that friends are already impressed. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) You don’t seem to be taking in all that is going on around you. Money matters come under scrutiny as funds you thought to be spare turn out to be much needed. Don’t forget to stop and look at what is going on around you. If you don’t, you might miss the exciting and very attractive new person before you. This is sure to be an unforgettable week if you act sensibly. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) Your loved ones will be turning to you to help them make some major decisions about their life, as your leadership qualities are highlighted to everyone around. Just make sure you don’t forget to fulfil arrangements you made, or you could be missing out on some exciting action planned for your love life PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Older faces prove demanding, so stand your ground. Your stars are going to be trying to lead you into temptations in love, which might not be in your best interests. A slow pace will definitely serve you well, so don't be in too much of a hurry to jump in at the deep end. It could end up costing you in more ways than one. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) A solution to a problem that you and a loved one have been
facing can be reached by Thursday. Some sort of outlay is needed if you are to ever get the changes you need. It may cost you a lot in the beginning, but this is one week which is sure to see you come out with far more to gain than to lose. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) You have a great opportunity to reveal a new admirer. For once, you are not going to fuel the gossip that is circulating; instead, you'll be trying to take the limelight off the person who is getting so much unwanted attention. This charitable nature could just land you in the path of a new and powerful best friend if you give in to whims on Tuesday. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) Forced changes in your career can be to your long-term advantage, so don’t fight them. Try to think of what your actions may be doing to loved ones. You have a reckless head on, and it’s going to get you into trouble. Stop spending so much time and energy on finding out about other people’s lives, especially when your own life could do with some attention. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) A run-in with a new face in your career must be defused this week. A self-indulgent mood is set to see you spending a small fortune on yourself as the stars make you realise how special you are. Be careful of telling a new friend too many secrets. You may be best to leave a little to the imagination. But gambles must, and should, be taken with your love life.

Match Reports By Geoff Huxtable
It’s Xtremely surprising! AFTER a few weeks of mostly predictable results, the Premier League might prove to be rather more competitive after last Friday’s matches. Xtreme Sports lost their 100% record at bottom side Team Valle, and could only draw. Mitch hit two maximums and home captain Geoff replied with one of his own. Bar 180 A might have been happy with that result if they, too, hadn’t slipped up against Phoenix Bar. A very tight and tense match included a 126 check-out on the bull by Bubbles. Cozy Wanderers suffered successive home defeats with a 5-3 loss against Target Army, while Grizzly hit a 180 as The Pub took the trebles to win at La Central. The Division 1 top two clashed at Target bar but, despite taking the first two rubbers, the Titans had little else to celebrate as they crashed to a 6-2 defeat against Palms A, who extended their lead to seven points. Jamie was Man of the
Match during Ourplace Naturals’ 7-1 success at Gaffers A, which moves them into second place. But Gaffers’ Gary hit another 180! A 117 finish by Summerlands’ Alan was not enough to stop the Vikings taking the three points, while positive results for Scruffy Macs and Rood keep things quite tight in the chasing pack. Cozy Warriors enjoyed their first win of the campaign with a 6-2 victory over fellow-strugglers. Naughty Nautas. Bar 180 C and Tavern were inactive, which gave La Cana Lancers a chance to narrow the gap at the top of Division 2, which they did with a 6-2 win at Bar Plaza Rebels. Home girl Muriel enjoyed her night after she beat La Cana captain Pete. Bar Amistad’s Dee secured the Woman of the Match award after hitting the double to win the trebles and earn her team a draw with Palms B. And the Playgirls enjoyed their second three-pointer by slaying the Dragons.
Dashing Dario plans non-stop, 174-mile marathon up to Teide A 35-YEAR-OLD Canarian athlete plans to run non-stop for an astonishing 280km (174 miles) around Tenerife to the top of Mount Teide in just four days. Dario Dorta, who is being backed by the Cabildo, is hoping to raise thousands of euros for two charitable groups with his marathon “Runspiral 2012” ordeal. It begins on 14th September in Santa Cruz and follows a spiral route, all the way up to El Teide, and ends on the 17th. The two organisations are the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the Maria Garcia-Estrada Foundation. The latter is a fund-raising cancer-research group which, in particular, contributes to the battle against a rare type of cancer called sarcoma, which occurs in the bones or tissues, such as muscles or nerves. RunSpiral is a sportssolidarity initiative to raise funds for associations and foundations linked to the study and research against cancer. Dorta has taken part in various sporting activities from an early age, and his experience includes three Ironman competitions, which require tremendous feats of endurance. He has also been an athletics coach, a national triathlon coach and a member of the Spanish Paralympics squad as a guide for ONCE. His incredible journey takes him from Santa Cruz through
Candelaria, Granadilla, Guía de Isora, Masca, Teno Alto, Carrizales, Buenavista, Garachico, La Orotava and, finally, El Teide itself! The event was launched on Wednesday by Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior, Minister of Sports Jesus Perez and Dario himself, together with representatives from AECC and Ana Luis Bartlet and Dulce Acevedo, from Maria Garcia-Estrada. Melchior said of Dorta: “He is a generous, caring man, thinking of others and helping by doing what he does best, and that is running. “I encourage all Tenerife to work with this initiative, either by buying a solidarity T-shirt or participating in some sections of the run to support him. “It is a difficult challenge because there are four

straight days of running, but I am sure he will succeed.” Super-fit Dorta, who has been training for up to 100 miles a day at weekends, and has even run for 40 hours at a stretch, said: “I want to thank the support of all institutions and sponsors, and I am sure that I will complete the challenge and get to the top of Teide. “I encourage all those who want to contribute their bit for the fight against cancer to join this project. I’ll be having a half-hour stop in certain places, but I think I will be running three nights without sleep.” He added: “To do this, I will have a multi-disciplinary team looking after me, including a doctor and a psychologist, and I’ll be eating specific foods.” Solidarity T-shirts cost 10 euros and are on sale at
Intersport at the Meridian Mall in Carrefour, Santa Cruz. Call 922 22 83 44 for more information. The organisers have set a symbolic price of two euros per kilometre if you’d like to help Dorta through his great run, and you can “buy” the number of kilometres you wish to run. To do so, you must make a deposit to the Solidarity Runspiral Miles Account No 3076-0320-91-2234025514. Salute to Tenerife’s Wiggins relishes his Island of dreams… and so have hundreds of other Olympic prospects BRADLEY WIGGINS rode into sporting history, gave Tenerife a pat on the back for helping him out - and then turned his attention to the Olympic Games! He became the only Brit to win the 2,173-mile Tour de France event in 109 years when he raced into Paris on Sunday, having decimated the field over three gruelling weeks. And his spell of altitude training in Teide’s mountainous regions back in May held him in good stead for the greatest challenge of his life. Wiggins failed to conquer the harsh climbs completely in his previous Tour de France rides and knew he had to remedy that weakness if he were ever to succeed in the toughest sporting event of all. Fourth was the best he’d finished, in 2009, but all those back-breaking, lung-sapping, 2,000km climbs up Mount Teide in May have paid off handsomely, as he felt sure they would. “I knew Teide was the key to unlocking the door to the Tour de France,” said Wiggins. “It gave me great confidence going into the events building up to the big one, and I won those as well.” He added even before the start: “Tenerife has proved to me that I can win it,” and he was promptly installed as favourite. As if the tortuous Tour challenge were not enough, though, the 32-yearold Londoner will be back in the saddle for more serious
riding tomorrow (Saturday). That’s when he competes in the road race at the London Olympic Games, which will be declared open at a lavish ceremony this evening (Friday). Wiggins will be doing his level best to assist Team Sky colleague Mark Cavendish, who sacrificed much of his own Tour ambitions, along with Chris Froome, to ensure that Wiggins became king. Tomorrow, Wiggins hopes it’s pay-back time as he strives to usher Cavendish through for Britain’s first gold medal of the Games in the Road Race. Then, a mere four days later, the man from Kilburn, North London, will attempt to add his Olympic tally of three golds, a silver and two bronze in the Time Trial. Britain’s latest sporting hero - and perhaps the greatest of all – is not the only Olympian to pay tribute to our Island. Paul Goodison, Britain’s Olympic Laser champion from Beijing in 2008, spent two fruitful, separate weeks here in the South, training in his tiny one-man craft from out of San Miguel Marina in November and again in January. “It’s great there,” said ‘Goodison. “Most of other winter training camps and competitions involve loads of planning and travelling. “But we can fly straight to Tenerife, and then it’s 15 minutes in a cab to our hotel, and no more than a minute to where the boats are kept at the marina. “And the sea conditions are ideal,

especially with the sun on your back for most of the time. In fact, the whole set-up is perfect.” From an athletics point of view, the British team always set up a warm-weather winter base in Portugal, where it’s never as sunny as over here, as hundreds of European athletes - Olympians, hopefuls and stars-to-be - have discovered. They came in their squads from all over Europe - France, Italy and Switzerland to name but a few - at different periods, to frequent the Olympic Stadium in Playa de Las Americas, known formally as the Estadio Antonio Dominguez, throughout the winter months until the end of April. The most famous of all was probably Sweden’s legendary Carolina Kluft, the 2004 Olympic heptathlon champion, who missed out four years later through injury and is now planning her international swansong in London. Other squads from Germany, Slovenia, Estonia and the Czech Republic have availed themselves of the magnificent track and field facilities there. Dubliner Claire Bergin, who spent a fabulous fortnight at the Olympic Stadium, also in December, was thrilled to learn that her Republic of Ireland 4 x 400m relay team, will be competing in London after achieving the necessary qualifying time. “It’s brilliant,” she told Canarian Weekly. “Training in Tenerife was such an eyeopener for me. Last year, we trained in California and the weather was dreadful.” Finland even booked the stadium en-masse for the entire winter, so impressed were their officials with the facilities. One extra-special athlete putting the time in at the Las Americas stadium was Ivet Lalova, who is recognised as the fastest white women ever! The Bulgarian beauty recorded 10.77sec at the age of 20, which still stands as the best, yet she suffered a dreadful injury just a year after finishing fourth in the 2004 Olympic 100m final in Athens.
Tour de France maestro Bradley Wiggins is aiming to strike another goldmine in London
She was set to become an internationally-recognised superstar until a freak accident left her with a fractured thigh bone, which put her out of action for two years. But just a few weeks ago she won the European 100m metre title in Helsinki. The time wasn’t that great, but in an exclusive interview with Canarian Weekly, she said: “If everything is in place in London, and everything feels right, then I can be at my very best and run faster than ever.” As for Tenerife she absolutely loves it. "In the winter, it’s so cold in Bulgaria - and it’s not so hot in Italy, where I now live with my fiancé,” she said. Ivet was here at the end of January, when she stressed: “This is fantastic weather for
us. I4t’s the perfect place for warm-weather training.” Tenerife really has been a magnet for sporting stars, including world-class swimmers, but for Ian Thorpe, one of the greatest Olympians of all, it virtually signalled the end of his second career. Thorpe had quit swimming in 2006 after winning three gold medals at the 2000 Games in Sydney and two more in Athens four years later. He also claimed 11 world titles and 10 Commonwealth Games gold medals, six of which he won in Manchester in 2002, and set 13 longcourse records. But his efforts in Tenerife to regain that old magic deserted him. And he later failed to qualify for the London Games during the
Australian Championships. Another popular Tenerife venue frequented by Olympians has been the T3 (Tenerife Top Training) camp in La Caleta, which is renowned for its sporting facilities. Apart from catering for England’s Premiership football clubs, it has played host to a stream of European swimming squads throughout the winter months, all preparing for the London Games. They came from Germany, Italy and Holland among other countries - even the Japanese swimmers were over recently for warm-weather training in the magnificent outdoor, 10lane pool. The T3 is also a base for the Spanish beach volleyball squad, who have high hopes of a medal in London.

own Tour de Force! WELCOME to the Greatest Show on Earth, as the Olympic Games has been billed.
It finally kicks off in London tonight with a glittering Opening Ceremony, and if you were not aware of that fact, then you must have been living on another planet for the past year or so. London has gone absolutely ga-ga for the Games, spending billions of pounds to ensure that down-trodden Stratford, in East London, has been transformed into the most magnificent platform to stage the 2012 Games. The main focus is sure to be on the athletes. After all, it’s not every day that Usain Bolt, the fastest man in history, competes in London and defends his Olympic title. What makes the Men’s 100m so intriguing is that Bolt’s form has deserted him temporarily. Former champion Donovan Bailey believes he can still triumph even at only 80% capability, even though Bolt’s training partner, Yohan Blake, has beaten him twice recently and is current world champion. And what about Sheffield pin-up Jessica Ennis? She missed the last Games through injury, but her recent heptathlon form has been spot-on. She broke the long-standing British record, held by Denise Lewis, who believes the title is hers for the taking, even though she is up against
Cabildo’s windfall for Island hopefuls
reigning Olympic and World champion Tatyana Chernova in the seven-event contest. On the track, Mo Farah competes in the 5,000m (he’s world champion) and 10,000m, in which he knows he will have to find that extra burst of speed to see off his closest rivals if he is to complete a splendid double. Everywhere you look, there are international stars galore. The Brownlee brothers Alistair, 24, and 22-year-old Jonathan form the British triathlon team and are tipped to provide Britain with a onetwo, having dominated the event for the past year.
Welcome to the greatest show of all!
In the sailing section, to be held at Weymouth, Ben Ainslie strikes fear into opposition hearts whenever he takes to the water. Ainslie, who now sails in the Finn class after starting in the Lasers, has three Olympic golds and a silver to his credit, and his name seems to be on the 2012 gold medal already. Paul Goodison, defending Laser champion and a former protégé of Ainslie, will have his work cut out to ward off Australian Tim Slingsby, who has enjoyed a superb build-up. And don’t forget Tenerife’s own Javier Hernandez, from Santa Cruz, who has shown impressive form over the past year. Sheffield’s Paul now lives in Weymouth with fellow Olympian sailor Saskia Clark,
who’s also in with a shout in the 470 class, along with partner Hannah Mills. Britain seems to have stars galore in the pool and on the cycle track. Rebecca Adlington stunned the world by winning two golds in Beijing, in the 400m and 800m, and has every intention of repeating that performance in London. And on the track Sir Chris Hoy, the multi-world champion who won three golds in Beijing, is aiming to take his Olympic tally to five, even though he will not be defending his sprint title. As they say at all the great sporting events the world over, don’t blink or you’ll miss it! But there will be dozens of repeats and highlights to savour anyway.
Spanish stars fall by wayside SPAIN’S team-mates Rafael Nadal and cyclist Samuel Sánchez will both miss out on the Olympics, as will steeplechaser Ángel Mullera. Nadal, who was to have carried the Spanish flag at tonight’s Opening Ceremony, and defended his Olympic tennis crown, withdrew through injury last week. Basketball star Pau Gasol
27 July - 02 August 2012
will step in for him as the country's flag-bearer. Sánchez, defending Road Race champion, has also ruled himself out of the Games following a fall in the Tour de France, which left him with a fractured right hand and bruised left collarbone. And 3,000 metre steeplechaser Ángel Mullera has been removed from the Spanish Olympic track and
field team, following recent revelations over alleged doping. A crestfallen Sanchez said: “It is the most painful sporting decision I have had to take in a long time. I am the current Olympic champion and I would have liked to defend a medal that changed my life.” Spain says Gasol, who plays for Los Angeles Lakers, has been chosen to replace
Nadal because he represents “the best values in sport and competition”. Gasol was a silver medallist in Beijing after Spain were beaten by the US in a memorable final. The Spanish Athletics Federation announced that police were investigating an email exchange between Mullera and an anonymous doping expert.
TENERIFE Cabildo pledged a total of 30,000 euros in grants for the Island’s Olympic and Paralympic Games qualifiers. The chosen few were sailors Javier Hernandez and Alicia Cebrian, discus-thrower Mario Pestano, Andres Mata (weightlifting) and Paralympic swimmer Michelle Alonso. It is the highest number of Tenerife Olympians ever, and the grants, to help with training costs, were presented last month by Second VicePresident Carlos Alonso, and Sports Minister Jesus Perez. Pestano is the most seasoned performer of the group, with successive Olympics behind him, in Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008). But the 34-year-old has yet to finish on the podium. Javier Hernandez is, perhaps, Tenerife’s best-known Olympian, having taken part in the Beijing Games, where he came 14th in the single-handed Laser class.
motivated. I fully intend to improve on the poor result I obtained in Beijing.” Alicia Cebrian, 29, who took bronze in last year’s European Championships, has also made an impression on the women’s laser radial class, winning the recent Spanish leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup off Majorca to qualify for her first Olympics. Weightlifter Andres Mata, 19, secured the only Spanish place in the London Games after setting a national record in the junior category (77 kg). The La Laguna youngster displayed his potential in the World Junior Championships in Guatemala in May by winning three bronze medals. Finally, the outstanding Michelle Alonso looks a certainty to get among the medals in the Paralympics, also in London, from 29th August to 9th September.
The Santa Cruz sailor has been Spain’s No1 in this class since 2005, and has made his mark on the world scene over the last couple of years. He won the ISAF World Cup series in 2010, took bronze in the 2008 World Championship and silver at the European Championship a year later. Hernandez said: “As a child, it never occurred to me that I would be competing in two Olympics. It’s a great experience and I am very
