Whale of a time! Morgan’s arrival at Loro Parque has created a big stir

THE arrival of a young killer whale at Loro Parque on Tuesday evening finally ended a protracted legal battle by conservationists in Holland and attracted worldwide press coverage. They campaigned for 17 months

to have the orca whale released back to the ocean, insisting it was her only chance of survival. But a team of marine experts decided otherwise and Morgan, weighing well over one ton, arrived in good health at Loro Parque on Tuesday evening following her flight from Amsterdam’s Schipol

airport to Tenerife North. Her journey began at dawn from the Harderwijk Dolphinarium, a marine mammal park situated an hour’s ride from Amsterdam. It ended some 12 hours later and signalled a closure to the fight by a coalition of conservation groups to free her. It took a 50-strong team of

trainers, handlers and other workers to carry out the transfer, from dolphinarium to plane, which left at about 1pm for Tenerife with several of the trainers and vets aboard. The entire operation was an astonishing sight to see as the huge whale, resting in a hammock that restrained her movement and

protected her fins, was hoisted from her tank by a crane into a box on the back of a truck. The orca whale, reckoned to be about three years old, weighed just 400 kilograms (880lbs) when she was rescued in shallow waters off Holland’s North Sea coast in June 2010. Continued on page 3

The old notes are still valid and can be used until further notice. The Bank believes there are a significant number of old £50 notes circulating in Spain and the Canaries, and the British Consulate is alerting British Nationals about the updated version.

There is no doubt that the dolphinarium, a highly-regarded marine mammal park, saved her from certain death and showered her with all the care and attention she needed to get back in shape. But though she put on nearly a ton in weight during her time there, a team of experts maintained she had little chance of survival in the wild unless her natal pod, or family, could be identified. She had apparently come from Norwegian waters and protesters, operating under the “Free Morgan” banner, demanded she be set free. There were echoes of the 1993 family film Free Willy, in which a youngster befriended an orca whale, which was on display in an American amusement park. It has a happy ending, with Willy teaming up with his pod and family again after a daring dive into the sea. But the story didn’t end there. Keiko, who starred in Free Willy, was released in Icelandic waters after 20 years in captivity. He died, apparently of pneumonia, after surviving two months on his own and swimming about 870 miles to Norway. Morgan had little chance of repeating the film’s original finale, despite her many supporters. Yet city officials of Harderwijk were so concerned about possible protests at the orca’s departure that an emergency ban was issued, blocking ‘Free

Morgan’ demonstrations. The conservationist coalition stressed that they never planned to interfere with the operation, spokeswoman Nancy Slot saying: “We would never have done anything that could endanger Morgan.” Or-

um, which put Morgan on display after her rescue, has not disclosed financial details of her shipment to Loro Parque, though spokesman Bert van Plateringen said it would not make money out of it. Morgan will have plenty of company

A statement from Loro Parque, in Tenerife, read: “After regaining her weight and health for a year, she can now be introduced to the group of orcas in Loro Parque, this being the most suitable location in Europe for Morgan to continue living healthily and integrated with a family. “Loro Parque has the best facilities and expert staff needed to take proper care of Morgan. She appears to be in very good condition. She is tranquil and, as soon as possible, she will begin the pro-

cess of socialising with other whales here. “The decision to integrate Morgan into a group of orcas in captivity was taken by the entity in charge of the case, the Dutch Ministry of Economy, Agriculture and Innovation, after consulting a group of the world’s leading experts on orcas, and listening to different opinions. “The unanimous conclusion reached by the expert scientists was that this was the only chance of survival the animal had, because it is a marine mammal belonging to a social species which needs to form part of a group to survive. “For this reason, and because Loro Parque has the facilities and expertise required, supported and supervised by Sea World, the experts in charge of the animal have initiated the legal steps to carry out the transfer of the animal to Spain. “This will take place as soon as possible, when the logistical process and training session are complete.” Dr Javier Almunia, Deputy Director of the Loro Parque Foundation and head of the marine conservation programmes, added: “Our only interest is to help this animal and provide the greatest attention to its development, as we have done in the past with other rescued animals. “This is why we have not hesitated to make our facilities and our team of professionals available to this animal.”

Donkey stone DUE to the nature of my job I have random conversations at random times; some warrant a little bit of further delving if they interest me, as was the case with Donkey Stone. The conversation went something like “… my mum used to use a Donkey Stone for her step…” Well I didn’t have a clue what these people were talking about, how can anything to do with a Donkey, clean a step? Further research proved that a donkey stone was actually a type of cleaning block which was used mostly in the North of England to clean stone steps. The name Donkey Stone seems to have originated from the fact that there was a brand of cleaning stone called Donkey which was originally the trade mark of a Manchester company called Edward Read & Son, who were one of several makers of the cleaning stones. Historic accounts say that Donkey stones were first used in northern textile mills to clean greasy steps giving them a non-slip finish. However the stones also became popular with housewives who would use them to give doorsteps a decorative finish. Quite often the stones would be given out in exchange for old clothes or scrap metal, by rag and bone men as op-

posed to being purchased. According to Wikipedia “Donkey stones were made from a mixture of pulverised stone, cement, bleach powder and water. The mixture was ground up into a thick paste and then formed into a rectangular slab on a bench. The slab was then cut up to form the individual stones. The finished stones were then placed on racks to dry, usually for several days, although sometimes the drying process would take longer if the weather was cold and damp. Donkey stones were made in three different colours; brown, using a type of sandstone called cotta stone from Northampton; white, using a type of stone from Appley Bridge quarry near Wigan, and cream, using a blend of the two.” Tameside council’s website also recounts the history of the cleaning product which died out during the 1950s and 60s. A blue plaque commemorates the site of the old works at Donkey Stone Wharf on the canal where the last manufacturer of the stones, a company called Eli Whalley, founded in the 1890s, was based. In its heyday, Eli Whalley employed eight men, producing one hundred gross stones in a working day, in order to supply bulk orders for seventy or eighty gross from mills and the Co-op, whilst the private customers obtained theirs in exchange for old rags! Christmas lives in Adeje The local council of Adeje are supporting the revitalisation of trade in the municipality with a Christmas market.

Until the 4th December, the parking area at the Municipal School of Music in Adeje, will host a Christmas market. The municipality of Adeje, via the Culture and Economic Development and Employment Policy directed by Nayra Medina Bethencourt and Ermitas Moreira respectively, have reported that as part of the Christmas season the Adeje Christmas market has been launched, with the collaboration of El Baratillo Los Verdes, a Christmas market which aims to “promote and stimulate commercial

development of the area.” the market will be set up in the car park of the Municipal School of Music in Adeje from now until Sunday December 4th from 5pm to 10pm. Medina Bethencourt said that “we have achieved activities for all age groups and in a great number of areas”. In this sense, the councillor said “this week we start in Las Torres, hosting for the first time and where you can find different products, gifts, Christmas decorations, among other things, all at a great price” the head of Culture explained “providing a cultural framework which will benefit not only users and residents, but also shops, which take advantage of activities to offer its products to

the public.” In the market, there will be delicacies such as honey, mojo, sweets, cheeses, nuts, churros, wines, home decor items, weaving, jewellery, books, cards, handmade soaps, paintings, costumes, musical instruments, aloe vera, mini stone sculptures, etc, “we want to promote a place to start holiday shopping and spend the afternoon,” said Moreira Garcia. Music for the event will be provided by the students of the School of Music in Adeje. Finally, Medina Bethencourt, thanked the groups, committees of the districts and others, for their hard work and effort for the Christmas season.

Cabildo nativity scene now open President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, opened yesterday (Thursday) the nativity scene which has been on display every year since 1988 in the main hall of the Cabildo building in Santa Cruz for both visitors and users alike.

This time the subject of this representation is inspired by many geographical locations in Tenerife. It is the work of Jose Maria Mesa, who has produced five other scenes in previous years. The figures that populate the Bethlehem scene this year are small sculptures measuring 60 inches, and are complemented by original features of the Tenerife crafts, such as pot-

tery, basketry amongst others. The scene takes its inspiration from the Barranco de Yeneché (located between the municipalities of Adeje and Guía de Isora). The president of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior said, “with the opening of the nativity scene, officially our Christmas begins. We are proud to continue, year after year, representing the Nativity. It is a long tradition with which it shows how we see our island.” The nativity will be open to the public until January 6th, from 9.00 to 15.00 hours and from 16.00 to 21.30 hours, except 24th and 31st (9.00 to 15.00 hours) and on 25th December and 1st and 6th January (16.00 to 21.30 hours). Contributions made will go to charity Caritas.

Travel duty won`t cost tourists much THE Chancellor’s refusal to lower or abolish Air Passenger Duty in the UK will lead to much dearer holidays for families next year.

But it will not be too painful for Britons coming to Tenerife because the APD is determined in four bands, according to distances between the UK and other countries. The lowest band is 2,000 miles, and Tenerife comes within that limit because

Customs and Excise officials determine the distances involved between the UK and the capital cities of other countries. The official distance between Britain and the North airport in Santa Cruz comes within the 2,000-mile limit. And although the South airport, which takes the bulk of UK tourists, is further away from Britain, the entire Island falls within Band A. That’s a real bonus for UK passengers because those on

economy flights to Tenerife will be charged just £4 per head extra (up from £12 to £16), from April 2012. Details of the controversial Air Passenger Duty (APD) will be announced on Tuesday, and airlines have calculated that increase will add a further 10% to holiday-makers’ bills. But not for those wise enough to chose Tenerife or any of the other Canary Islands to soak up the sun next year.

Ex-pat pensioners can’t always claim the UK heating allowance hand-outs EX-PATS attempting to claim the Winter Fuel Payment benefit from the UK are often puzzled - because they have been left in the dark. Until now the Government has not specified in print, but on a website only, the conditions which need fulfilling for a pensioner to qualify for the tax-free, one-off payment, which can amount to £300 each winter. It now stresses that claimants have to be born before 1951, and their first claim must have been made while they were living in the UK. The website www.direct.gov.uk warns that you can’t get a payment once you have relocated in another EU country, or Switzerland, and didn’t qualify before you moved. The number of claimants is up 52% over the past five years and now stands at about 73,000, which amounts to about £15.6 million coming out of the British Government’s everdepleting coffers. Of those Brits claiming,

nearly 34,000 are living in Spain, followed by 17,815 in France, 6,819 in Ireland and 5,300 on Cyprus. The rest live in Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Malta. It has sparked anger among some Brits, who feel such claims are fraudulent because they believe the Mediterranean winter temperatures do not justify the pay-outs. Emma Boon, a UK Taxpayers Alliance spokesperson, said of the increased number of claims from Europe. “It is shocking, and yet more evidence that we need to reform the welfare system so that money goes to those who really need it, and not to well-off ex-pats living on the Costa del Sol.” Meanwhile figures for May 2011 on emigration, published by the Department of Works and Pensions, reveal that British pensioners continue to leave the country and only in Canada and Australia has the number of resident pensioners fallen.

Mobile-phone scam adds up to a fortune for users COMPLAINTS from mobilephone users subscribing to premium SMS services unwittingly have tripled this year.

This type of service consists of text messages for which users pay a premium rate to receive a song, a logo, a game, commercial information or competition entries direct to their mobiles. They can cost users up to 100 euros each and are added to the phone bill. The Spanish Federation of Independent Consumers and Users (FUCI), has recorded 6,134 complaints since January.The sting begins when users enter their numbers on a website to download files, or take part in a competition. They are not told they are subscribing to a premium text service, which could lead to them receiving up to 30 SMS per week, at a cost of 0.15-1.50 euros each. And users don’t find out they’ve been stung until they receive their next bill. Gustavo Samayoa, the FUCI president, said most

Airport staff protest Surveillance staff at Tenerife South’s Reina Sofia airport are protesting against their working conditions. They are seamless eighthour shifts, which they consider “unfair and prejudicial” for the 153 employees who perform surveillance duties at facilities managed by AENA.

The victims cite the example of the hours they spend “not moving” in positions of scanners, since “it un-

dermines the quality of service and, therefore, airport security,” a spokesman commented. Security guards say that they have met six times with the company’s management but without reaching a satisfactory agreement. They have requested “respect in the right to take a break in those eight hours, contained in a collective agreement.” Also claim that there is a lack of foresight in shifts, “we know what we do but not from one day to another.” They are also concerned about the future of the workforce.”

Perhaps one of the most anticipated events of the festivities in the capital of Tenerife, with thousands of children being amazed at the miraculous appearance. Now, due to the economic crisis that unique moment that has taken place for decades and impressed thousands of children will cease. According to the Council it will save 40,000 euros and the collection that was obtained from the sale of tickets (one euro) and went to various NGOs, about 23,000 euros, will be given to these organisations throughout the year. Of course, it was announced that the parade will be more spectacular, but still not the same.

Simple explanation for Tenerife’s green beam A POWERFUL green laser beam, fired from La Palma to Tenerife, could have signalled a Martian invasion, but it was nothing remotely as exciting. In fact, it was an experiment, conducted by researchers from universities in Austria, Manchester and York, to measure greenhouse gases, such as as carbon dioxide and methane. The scientists spent a fortnight studying how the gases interfere with an infrared beam, which is guided by a green laser. The beam will eventually run between orbiting satellites. The laser was emitted from a transmitter in La Palma and travelled 90 miles to the European Space Agency’s (ESA) optical ground station on Tenerife. Gottfried Kirchengast, from the Wegener Centre in Graz, said: ‘The campaign has been a crucial next step towards realising infra-red laser occultation observations from space. “We are excited that this pioneering, inter-island demonstration for measuring carbon dioxide and methane was successful.” An occultation is an astronomical term for an event that occurs when one object is hidden by another object that passes between it and the observer. The infra-red beam cannot be seen with the naked eye, but the green guidance laser proved to be a spectacular sight and also recorded atmospheric turbulence.

The institutional portal of the Cabildo, www.tenerife.es has increased by 30 percent the number of visits in the past year, which in 2010 was subject to a thorough overhaul in both design and in its content, which has led it to becoming a main reference for citizens. Minister Victor Perez, noted that during this period the provision of information and services, including the portal has increased very significantly from the previous year, he added “navigational improvements to access its content as well as the introduction of the first steps that citizens can do electronically.” The services most demanded during the past year have been the scholarships, grants and subsidies and the procedures and services. A year ago, however, the top positions were searches for employment, education and public tenders. Víctor Pérez explained, “the council continues to work successfully to meet the challenge of eGovernment so that citizens can exercise their right to communicate with the Administration by electronic means and levels of quality

and adequate security to complement traditional channels.” Thus, the Corporation has launched processing over the Internet, which means that citizens can submit applications electronically and perform other procedures such as electronic payments, receive notifications if they wish, or provide associated documentation, among other issues, without having to visit council offices. The Cabildo’s institutional portal gathers information from public services to which the citizen can access as well as practical information related to the island, tourist information or resources that may be useful for the user. The Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR) recently granted www.tenerife.es the degree of accessibility “AA”, making it the first website in the Canary Islands, both in public and private, to achieve this certification.

There’s no work in Spain, so we’re off! THE scarcity of jobs in Spain has led to an unusual milestone, which reflects the severe economic crisis there.

For the first time ever, the number of people leaving the country for good exceeds those coming in, and of these, around 50,000, or 10%, are native Spaniards. Latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that this year alone, 500,000 people have emigrated, mostly because they know there is no chance of finding work. Between 2008 and 2009, the immigrant total fell by more than a half and, as a result, say experts, Spain has lost fully 130,850 inhabitants in one year. They expect the trend to continue until at least 2020, The social security office has lost 274,185 foreign workers “paying into the system”, which was a 13.3% drop of the 2,059,547 currently registered. And only 10.28%, or just over 1.7 million, of those legal workers are foreign. Spain now has 5.14 million legal immigrants - 2.8 million from the EU and other northern European countries such as Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Iceland. Another 2.6 million make their way to the country from Morocco, Ecuador, Colombia, Perú, Bolivia and China.

The Court of Appeals in Atlanta has turned down its appeal against handing back the 17-ton treasure trove - the largest ever recovered from the sea - worth some 370 million euros. It was retrieved off the coast of Portugal from the Spanish frigate Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes, which was sunk by the British during the Battle of Cape Santa María in 1804. A lengthy court battle ensued over ownership, and a September ruling from the US Court of Appeals backed an earlier lower-court decision granting the find to the Spanish government. A full-blown Court of Appeals hearing has now ratified that outcome.

The two politicians, who were accompanied by their respective technical departments pledged to carry out urgently the necessary studies for both municipal and planning the future projects modifications.

World-winning cheese THE Benijos cheese factory, managed by the Sociedad Cooperativa del Campo La Candelaria since 1997 has received three awards for its semi-hard cheese varieties in the World Cheese Awards (WCA), held in Birmingham at the end of November.

The cheese factory is located in the neighborhood of Benijos Orotava and is a pioneer in the region of the North of Tenerife. They collect milk from more than 130 cattle and eight varieties of cheese are made with strict quality controls. They have been awarded the Gold Medal for semi

smoked cheese and a Bronze for the variety of semi paprika. They also were the winner of the Best Cheese, Félix García de Canarias (Canary Island Memorial Trophy Best Cheese) awarded in the international competition in this second edition. The award is named in honour of promoter Proexca, who died a few years ago, in recognition that it was him who promoted the participation of Canarian cheeses in this international event, and worked fervently. Ever since 2003 Canarian cheeses have participated in this competition. Benijos has obtained a total of 11 awards in different varieties, recognition of good

work and the quality of their products. The group from Candelaria are very “satisfied” with the three awards, “they are the result of work of many people, from the goatherd who puts trust in us, the master cheesemaker, women working in the dairy, administrative, sellers and consumers of our varieties. “ The international competition - World Cheese Awards started in 1987 organized by the guild of cheese in the UK. The competition is divided into over 60 different categories, which allows each cheese to be evaluated in its specific category, and the jury is composed of more than 140 experts from around the world.

Amy’s back to black dress sells for £43,000 The dress worn by Amy Winehouse for the cover of her Grammy awardwinning Back To Black album has sold for £43,000 at auction.

The polka dot chiffon design was bought by a Chilean fashion museum, with the proceeds going to the foundation set up by the late singer’s family in her memory. Winehouse, 27, was found dead at her home in Camden, north London, in July after a lengthy battle with drink and drugs. Her father Mitch was at the auction in central London to see the dress fetch more than twice the £20,000 figure expected after the winning bid was made by Museo de la Moda in Santiago. He said: “We are just over the moon and we owe a great debt to the designer, Disaya, who donated the proceeds from the sale.” The Amy Winehouse Foundation has already made three donations - each of £10,000 - to separate children’s charities including a hospice and a project that helps seriously ill babies. A new album of unreleased tracks, called Lioness: Hidden Treasures, is released on Monday with £1 from each album sold going to the foundation. Euro contingency planning Britain’s biggest banks have been urged by the City regulator to prepare for a break-up of the eurozone.

The head of the Financial Services Authority (FSA), Hector Sants, has told financial institutions to accelerate plans for a separation of the single currency area, Sky’s City editor Mark Kleinman has learned. Senior excutives from Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, RBS, Santander UK and Standard Chartered were given the warning at a private meeting with the FSA boss. Good risk management means planning for unlikely but severe scenarios, and this means that we must not ignore the prospect of the disorderly departure of some countries from the eurozone. Although the meeting was not specifically set to issue the warning, Mr Sants said the banks

should run a wide range of stress tests as part of their contingency planning. However, he stopped short of prescribing specific instructions or scenarios. People close to the FSA told Kleinman that Sants’ warning was “the kind of contingency planning expected in a situation like this”. The impact on different banks of a eurozone break-up would vary, depending on their exposures to sovereign debt of member countries. Where as Barclays holds billions of pounds worth of European government bonds, Santander UK and Standard Chartered have little direct exposure. Speaking on Jeff Randall Live with Joel Hills, Standard Chartered chief economist Dr Gerard Lyons warned that he does not forsee the single currency being able to survive the crisis in its current format. He said: “It’s possible

for the euro to survive if Greece has an orderly exit, which I think is possible in the second half of next year. “But it’s like most things, one needs to have a vision as to what follows. “It’s possible to have a two-speed euro but the real difficulty is that no

one can get their head around how you can exit from this situation.” Meanwhile, six global central banks, including the Bank of England, have taken action in a coordinated bid to low borrowing costs and boost the world economy.

A section of the M1 in South Yorkshire was shut at around 10.15pm last Monday after the vehicle crashed and shed its load onto the carriageway. The road remained closed in both directions between junction 32 and 33 near Sheffield until Tuesday morning, affecting thousands of motorist. A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said the tanker overturned after it collided with a caravan.

She said the tanker driver was not thought to be seriously injured, but was taken to hospital to be checked. “We were called at 10.15pm yesterday to reports of a tanker, which was carrying 23.5 tonnes of waste yeast, overturning,” she said. “Some of the contents were spilled on the northbound carriageway and we are in the process of emptying the remaining contents of the tanker and clearing up the spillage before it can be moved and the road reopened.” The road was reopened at around 9.30am but drivers were still being warned of delays of up to an hour.

Kingfisher flourishes Kingfisher, the DIY specialists and owners of B&Q and Screwfix, reported healthy third-quarter results; like-for-like sales were up 1.3%, and pre-tax profits up 13.9% at £273m. The company says 27 of the 29 stores it recently bought from failed rivals Focus are now open and trading well. Kingfisher has over 900 stores in eight countries in Europe and Asia.

Clarkson drops a clanger

Drought talk for 2012 A drought in the UK next summer is almost inevitable because rainfall in some parts of the country has been so low, the Government has warned.

The BBC has apologised after Jeremy Clarkson said he would like to see striking public sector workers “shot” in front of their families. The Top Gear presenter made his comments on BBC’s The One Show following Britain’s biggest public sector strikes in 30 years. He said of the strikers: “I’d have them all shot. I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families.

“I mean, how dare they go on strike when they’ve got these gilt-edged pensions that are going to be guaranteed while the rest of us have to work for a living.” Clarkson’s comments caused an immediate uproar on Twitter, with hundreds joining the backlash. Chat show host Piers Morgan tweeted: “Clarkson can abuse - and hit (weakly..) - me all he likes. But what he said about the strikers just proves he’s a nasty little twerp.”

Author Tony Parsons tweeted: “Jeremy Clarkson has misjudged the moment. Criticising striking public sector workers today is like sieg-heiling at Last Night of the Proms.” KateakaMrsO tweeted: “First time I have ever complained about a programme, as I usually think people can use off button but Jeremy Clarkson a disgrace.” A BBC spokesman said The One Show made an on-air apology at the end of the

programme to “viewers who may have been offended by Jeremy Clarkson’s comments”. Jon Trickett, Labour’s shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, said: “No one wants these strikes but most of today’s strikers are mums, not militants. “Clarkson should apologise. And the Prime Minister should make clear he disassociates himself from the distasteful remarks uttered by one of his friends.”

The Environment Department has said a huge swathe of south, central and eastern England is at high risk of severe water shortages if there is a drier than average winter. The area has suffered the driest year since records began, with just 70% of the long-term average rainfall. Reservoirs and groundwater reserves are well below normal levels, and South East Water has applied for a drought order to increase the amount it takes from rivers. We have to think ahead and take action now to deal with the situation before it gets any worse. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said only several months of sustained rainfall can alleviate the shortage. She said: “Everyone has worked hard to stave off any threat of hosepipe bans this year and help keep our rivers flowing. “Unfortunately if we have another dry winter, there is a high risk parts of the country will almost certainly be in drought next summer so it’s vital we plan ahead to meet this challenge.” Weather forecasters say

a ridge of high pressure has pushed the normal autumn storms away from the southern half of England. There is little sign of any significant rain for at least the next 10 days. In East Sussex, Ardingly Reservoir is just 12% full. If the dry spell continues, there is only enough water left to supply homes for another two months. It has asked for a permit to increase the amount of water it extracts from the River Ouse over the next six months. David Shore, South East Water operations director, told Sky News: “We are starting to think now about the possibility of restrictions on use next summer if we don’t get a good amount of rainfall in what remains of the winter. “We have to think ahead and take action now to deal with the situation before it gets any worse.” Anglian Water has been issued with a drought permit to refill two of its reservoirs from rivers, and Severn Trent will have to apply for a permit to top up Tittesworth Reservoir if levels not rise naturally by the spring. The Environment Agency has urged farmers to plan ahead for irrigation needs this spring and warned water companies to step up leak detection. It also says households should use water sparingly.

Murray ‘soft’ prison

Prosecutors in Los Angeles are preparing a legal fight to have Dr Conrad Murray sent to higher category prison for killing Michael Jackson. District Attorney Steve Cooley says he is considering an appeal after Murray was ordered to serve his sentence for involuntary manslaughter in a county jail. That is the result of a new law in California which keeps those convicted of certain non-violent offences out of the state’s overcrowded prison system. They would usually expect to serve half of their sentence. Mr Cooley is angry that Murray might serve less than half the fouryear sentence handed to him. Murray had been convicted earlier this month of killing Jackson through criminal negligence, giving him a dose of the hospital anaesthetic propofol and failing to monitor him properly or raise the alarm quickly enough. Murray had been hired by Jackson for his comeback shows in London but had pressured the doctor to find ways to help him sleep during the rehearsal period.

Judge Michael Pastor was withering in his condemnation of Murray. He said: “Dr Murray created a set of circumstances and became involved in a cycle of horrible medicine. One can’t help but to be offended by the circumstances of this case.” He was also critical of the doctor’s participation in the television documentary in which Murray said he felt ‘entrapped’ by Jackson and blamed the star for his own death. The judge said: “Yipes! Talk about blaming the victim. Not only isn’t there any remorse, there’s umbrage and outrage on the part of Dr Murray against the decedent.” Murray’s lawyers were furious at some of the judge’s comments, calling him “openly hostile”, and are preparing their own appeal. Jackson’s estate issued a statement praising the sentence. It said: “The egregious conduct of Dr Murray when ‘treating’ Michael Jackson was bad enough but when coupled with his outrageous lies in trying to cover up his wrongdoing after Michael was dying and/or had died only served to magnify his criminal actions.” British fans of the star have also welcomed it.

Jackson supporters are expected to converge on Las Vegas as the weekend for a ‘fan-fest’ featuring many of the star’s family. It is the first time they have attended the event, which is set to

form a tribute to him. The court still has to decide how much Murray should have to pay by way of restitution. Prosecutors want $100m (£64m) in lost revenue from Jackson’s comeback concerts at Lon-

don’s O2 Arena and $1.8m (£1.15m) in funeral and burial costs. A hearing will be held within the next four months although both sides agreed it would be impossible for Murray to repay that amount.

Superman sets record Can you crack it? Intelligence agency GCHQ has told Sky News over 50 people have so far cracked an online code launched in a bid to track down the spies of the future.

A copy of the first issue of Actions Comics, where hero Superman makes his debut, has sold for a record $2.16m (£1.4m).

The issue of Action Comics, graded a 9.0 for its condition, was auctioned online with the starting bid set at just $1 but with a reserve price of $900,000. The name of the seller was

not disclosed but there have been claims it was Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage. The issue was published in 1938 and originally cost just 10 cents - its sale is the first time a comic book has broken the $2m barrier. “When we broke the record in 2010 by selling the Action Comics No 1, graded at 8.5, for £950,000 ($1.5m), I truly believed that this was a record that would stand for many years to come,” said Stephen

stolen, collectors believed it would never be found or, worse, would be destroyed. “Clearly, I was wrong. Not in my wildest imagination could I have predicted that this legendary, stolen Action Comics No 1 would be found, graded at 9.0 and break the record a year-and-a-half later,” he added. Around 100 copies of Action Comics No 1 are believed to be in existence, and only a handful of those in good condition.

The service, which works with MI5 and MI6, has set up a website which hosts a Matrix-style code, as it attempts to look beyond traditional methods of recruitment. Visitors to the site - which has no GCHQ branding - are faced with seemingly meaningless rows and columns of numbers and letters, and given seven hours to come up with the hidden keyword. Anyone successfully unearthing the word will be redirected to the GCHQ recruitment website, where they will be able to apply for jobs suited to their skills. The firm said 80% of those who have solved the puzzle so far have started the job application process. Interest in the campaign

is being generated through social media websites, where the agency hopes to tap into a new generation of selftaught hackers to help tackle cyber crime. A GCHQ spokesperson said: “The digital arena is fast moving and, from a recruitment perspective, we acknowledge the need to engage with prospective candidates in new and innovative ways. “With this marketing initiative, we hope to reach out to a broader audience, who may not be attracted to traditional advertising methods. “We also hope that the code-breaking challenge will help increase awareness of GCHQ’s mission and the important role it plays in safeguarding the nation.” The organisation is looking to recruit around 35 spies, ideally with knowledge of unusual languages, as well as the code-breaking skills. Four-legged education is top lesson for schoolkids ACCION del Sol’s Educational Road show got off to a fine start last week at the CEIP Los Abrigos School.

Jack, Panchito the Shetland pony and a few small dogs and puppies were all well behaved, and they all loved the attention. The children had an enjoyable time learning about basic animal care, feeding and general welfare of our four-legged friends. Hopefully, they will remember what they have been told to try to give animals a better life here. The Educational Roadshow continues for the next two weeks, visiting various other schools in Arona, Arico and Granadilla. A new Puppies and Ponies Club is planned for the refuge in the new year, so call for more information if are interested in being involved. Another new arrival to the Granadilla refuge is Blanquita, a cute little dog who would love a new home. Please visit Accion del Sol if you are looking to adopt a dog. Now the nights are cooler, the dogs all have their own beds, but they always need an extra blanket or two to keep them warm. Hole lot of fun for Ronnie RONNIE TOAL will be enjoying a first-class five-star holiday in Tenerife next year, thanks to his hole-in-one on Amarilla golf course last week. The Scottish holiday-maker was taking part in Going Golfing’s competition and his feat, only the third since the charity event started, wins him a sevennight stay in Costa Adeje’s Gran Hotel, including flights next May. The competition is sponsored by Tenerife Golf Shop, at Las Chafiras, and Going Golfing Holidays. Ronnie, a regular 16-handicapper, secured his hole-in-one at the 14th. The Golf Shop has raised thousands of euros for a local charity since May 2010 and, from next year, is planning to spread the money around various children’s charities. Players pay 10 euros to enter the holein-one contest and even reaching the green from the tee earns them a small prize. The challenge, available to Amarilla Golf and Golf Costa Adeje, has proved a huge success, especially with British players, So far, Amarilla boasts two winners in Ronnie Toal and TJ Riordan (last March), while Paul Murtagh carried the flag for the Adeje course in October.

Lions say thanks to Charity Shop staff with feast of fun and games

A SPECIAL lunch was laid on by Tenerife Sur Lions Club officials for more than 30 of their Charity Shop staff on Sunday. It was held at the Slovenia Restaurant, Los Cristianos, and was their way of showing appreciation and thanks for the dedication and hard work shown by these volunteers throughout the year. Much of the Tenerife Sur Lions Club’s ability to continue their work rests on these folk, who staff the two shops and run them with good-natured enthusiasm. Over the course of the year, they have helped raise funds to provide holidays for

some 75 disadvantaged and challenged children and their carers, both here in Tenerife and in the UK. They have also helped to continue the on-going Lions’ commitment to contribute to the needs of the local community, and those further afield. But it’s not all hard work because there is the social and fun side, too, as the lunch proved. Following an excellent three-course meal at the Slovenia, there were, among other things, a Telly Addicts picture quiz, plus prize bingo, accompanied by goodhumoured banter, inspired by Master of Ceremonies, Ken Sadler.

A somewhat dubious home-made winning bingo card, given to Ken by one of the restaurant staff, inspired much hilarity from everyone, so much so that he was also given a prize. One thing the Lions cannot be accused of is “all work and no play” - certainly not with this fantastic group of volunteers. Why not join them? If you have some time to spare and would like to help, then pop into one of the charity shops and discover a little more. A Pool tribute All the Live Arico news to tragic Andy POOL players are invited to take part in a Memorial Cup pool competition at Camping Nauta next Saturday (10th Dec) in memory of Andy Rollerson, who passed away in July.

Andy was just 47 when he died of lung cancer, and his parents, Ray and Joan, still live on the Las Galletas site. There is a cup for the winner and runner up, and his dad will present both trophies. Entry is free to anyone who would like to enter, and the

event starts at 3pm at Camping Nauta. Debbie Cocks, who runs the bar there with husband Ray, said: “Everyone is welcome and it would mean such a lot to his family to get people involved. WELL, what a whirlwind week this past week has been, and the dreaded moving of the house has been accomplished. It’s a well-known fact that three of the most stressful times of your life are getting married, buying or moving house, and dying (I made the last one up coz’ I couldn’t remember what it was). Anyone who comes to live in Tenerife will have experienced a house-move at least a couple of times. It’s the law! And the longer you survive here, the more stuff you accumulate, and you don’t realise you have. Then comes the disagreement on what to keep and what to throw away. I’ve kept it simple, and just agreed with everything then chucked it when she’s out. All you have to do when you hear, “have you seen me best top”? is feign ignorance and stupidity. There isn’t a husband anywhere who hasn’t mastered some form of this look, normally from fear of reprisal - unless, of course, you’re newly-wed, but you will learn quickly, my boy. I also witnessed a miracle in the week, having called Telefonica on Thursday afternoon to move the line, Friday morning, they were there to do it and no, I’m not joking. And I still jump with fright every time the phone rings, not really believing it’s there, I keep waiting for the bloke to come back and take it saying it was a mistake. I have to mention Andy the Van Man, who moved all the big stuff - my wallet, etc (as if). I’ve never met him before but I’ve seen the ads. When he turned up I though he looked, facially, like a young Chubby Brown without the helmet (sorry Andy) but he turned out to be on the ball and a veritable furniture-moving Ninja. Good job. Anyway the bulk is done, although I suspect I’ll be putting stuff away for a year after this, but we’re in for Christmas. Nice. Recently, I got wind of the

return to the Island of an old mate of mine, one Nick Kane, alias Junior Jones. Nick was one of the original Rat Pack of entertainers here during the heady days of the Nineties, when Tenerife was a veritable Utopia for acts. There were jobs in abundance and a thriving afterwork scene for us all, including legendary nights down at The Patch at the Stage Door, where everyone would congregate after work and stay till daylight. The volume of impromptu talent was unbelievable. At the time, it was just a drink after work, but, looking back now, they were great days. A lot still go, but I’m past it. I just can’t drink that much any more, and I’ve recently started drinking egg nog.

Nick hails from down south, and I remember him telling me one night that while working as a musician in London, he was in at the start or the karaoke phenomenon, making the tracks for some of the big companies. And you can actually pick out his vocals on some of the karaoke classics. After a successful musical career in the Big Smoke, playing with various bands Nick moved to Tenerife, around the same time as I did, in 1995. He came over in an old Escort van, lock, stock and barrel, and began working on the thriving cabaret circuit here, with his blend of soul and classics. His wide vocal range and smooth voice soon made him a popular figure with the bars. When I went back to the UK for a break in 2000 and then returned, I lost track of Jun-

ior. Someone said he’d left the Island, and I heard no more until recently, when I was told that he’d returned, looking and sounding as good as ever, I’ve yet to speak to him, other than on Facebook, but I will get his number shortly for anyone after a top-class vocalist of the old-school variety, and a nice guy. Going back to the Stage Door, for those of you not in the know, it’s an entertainers’ late-night bar where, if you’re lucky enough to get in, you can see top live bands and singers until the early hours. I used to do every Monday night there about seven years ago, starting at 2.30am, and loved just sitting there with my guitar and playing my favourites - and usually falling off my stool. I’ve “grown up” on Tenerife with the proprietor there, Ray, who has helped me on more than one occasion in the past with a gig when work has been down, as he has with others I know. The first time I went in was circa 1993, and the first act I saw was the late Karen Newman. What a voice! At that time, the circuit here was very much a guarded and closed-shop to any newcomers. She was the first of all the acts I met to actually take time to talk to me, and a big bit of the scene passed with her. Anyway, that’s enough reminiscing, I’ve had no British telly all weekend, and I bet you’re all thinking: Thank God for that. He missed the X Factor then.” No, I downloaded it, actually! Praise be, Janet Devlin’s gone. The face on her last Saturday and the line-fluffing again went to show she simply shouldn’t have been there, taking up the space of better singers. She murdered the Chilli’s song with the yodelling, and it was like Frank Ifield singing it. And as for I’m a Celebrity, woman goes home and finds her husband in bed with Fatima. “It’s not what you think,” he cries. “What is it then? demands the wife. “It’s a woman,” replies the husband.

In recent months a number of high-profile cases involving Asian men grooming white girls for sex have made national headlines. In a deeply personal journey, presenter Adil Ray investigates these stories to try to discover how serious the problem really is within his own British Pakistani community. Adil meets young men in the British Pakistani community and he goes on patrol with a

police child exploitation team. He hears stories of enticement and gifts that led to brutal abuse, including one teenage girl who was targeted at the age of 12 for systematic rape and exploitation. Although only a very small number of Asian men are involved in such crimes - more than 80 per cent of sexual offenders as a whole are white. Adil finds that the problem is now being taken very seriously by both religious and community leaders.

DIY lovers likely to claim on their home insurance

Kick off your festive shopping THAT’S if you’ve not already done it. Last Monday was Cyber Monday known in the retail industry as the busiest day of the online shopping year, Cyber Monday is a time when you can pick up some great deals before Christmas.

Cyber Monday is typically the first Monday after Thanksgiving, an American

holiday, it’s a great reminder that Christmas is just around the corner. According to Visa Europe, ‘Cyber Monday’ produced 2,600 transactions worth a total of £184,000 every minute. If you haven’t started your Christmas shopping yet, take Cyber Monday as your starting point to surf the net to find some fabulous gifts for the whole family. But Cyber Monday

really refers to the USA. In the UK, at least according to predictions from major online retailers including eBay, Amazon and John Lewis, British Cyber Monday is Monday 5th December. Retail figures suggest that in 2010 British shoppers purchased over £360m of their presents online during the first Monday in December, most of those being bought at lunchtime!

Christmas cutbacks Twenty million consumers will be forced to cut back this Christmas, says Which?

Four in ten people will be spending less this Christmas and half are worried about the cost of Christmas presents, says Which? The consumer champion found that one in three people plan to buy presents for fewer people than last year, while others won’t even be able to afford to buy a Christmas tree. Many people are putting strategies into place to try and combat the financial strain. A third of people are starting their Christmas shopping earlier in order to spread the cost, and more than one in ten will be ‘regifting’ - giving unwanted presents to others – in an attempt to save money. One in ten also plan to buy an artificial tree instead of a real one, so that they can use it again next year. Worryingly, many people could be storing up debt for the New Year, as nearly one in five said they will be using their credit cards for the majority of their Christmasrelated purchases. Richard Lloyd, executive director, Which?, says: “Cashstrapped consumers are real-

ly feeling the impact of rising costs this Christmas. People are being forced to cut back. “But Christmas doesn’t have to be cancelled. Savvy shoppers can save money with online deals, discount days and pre-Christmas sales. You should compare prices between stores and don’t be afraid to haggle to get the best price.”

Which? has launched a onestop shop on its website with advice on making money go further this festive season, returning gifts and getting good deals in the January sales. Which? money experts have also analysed hundreds of different credit cards, so that consumers can pick the best deal for them this Christmas.

A recent press release by confused.com illustrates that with stiff increases in the cost of living it’s leading to a greater percentage of people doing home improvements on their own. Some of these projects however lead to claims on home insurance when ending in disaster. A recent study by the Institute of Fiscal Studies warned that households are looking at a 3.8 per cent fall in earnings with data for the first 11 months of 201011, marking the largest fall in disposable income since 1981. As a consequence of this strain on income, homeowners in the UK are turning their hand to DIY (Do It Yourself). Aside from money issues, a Confused.com survey also showed that thirty-nine per cent of Brits claim to have undertaken home improvement work after watching DIY programmess; their favourite being Grand Designs (22 per cent). Homeowners in Scotland and the West Midlands are most likely to do their own home improvements, with 23 per cent claiming to do DIY, compared with the North East where only 11 per cent do DIY. Fifty per cent of homeowners in Northern Ireland also claimed to have done a successful job, compared with 26 per cent of homeowners in Wales who said their inspirational home improvements looked dreadful and out of this 26% of Welsh homeowners, if money were no object, then 67 per cent would pay someone to do their DIY. Of all those UK homeowners surveyed, 31 per cent of these budding Kevin McClouds admitted to having DIY mishaps, and of these 31% homeowners, most disasters were taking place in households in Scotland (12 per cent) and Wales (12 per cent) resulting in home insurance claims. Despite tackling DIY to save money, 6 per cent of Scottish homeowners have paid over £1,000 in the past 24 months rectifying their DIY

disasters. A further 15 per cent of Scottish homeowners have paid £200 or more in the same period, whereas those living in Northern Ireland paid out over £350 in the last two years to fix botched DIY. In Wales, 13 per cent said they have paid out £300 fixing bad DIY jobs in the last two years. Mark Gabriel, Confused. com Home Insurance spokesman, says: “with the economy so fragile, people’s finances are under more pressure and things aren’t getting any easier particularly with the rise in petrol prices and food prices. Therefore people have turned to ways of saving money and have been inspired by home improvement programs”. “However it is important to remember that television often makes tasks look easier than they are. In fact, some home insurance policies stipulate that only professionally accredited tradesmen should carry out certain work, so it is worth checking that you are not inadvertently rendering your insurance invalid by failing to read the small print.” “It is important to look at your home insurance policy to check that you are fully covered, should things go wrong, and to check their policy details carefully. It is also necessary to take extra safety precautions, as DIY disasters can cause accidents.” Confused.com is offering a few safety tips to help overzealous home improvers avoid self-inflicted mishaps:

Take your time: Make sure you take your time on a job. We know it’s coming close to Christmas and everyone wants their homes looking nice for the family or unexpected guests, but make sure you plan what you want to do and don’t rush a job as accidents can happen. Don’t undertake DIY alone: There should always be someone on hand, in case an accident happens. Be aware of harmful fumes: When painting, or using any material that generates toxic fumes or dust, keep the room well ventilated. Never smoke while painting or standing close to a freshly painted area. Dress for the occasion: Wear protective clothing including safety goggles, gloves and a dust mask when working with potentially hazardous materials such as glass or spray paint. Avoid electrifying results: If a job is beyond your capabilities, hire a professional. This is particularly important for any electrical jobs which should only be carried out by a qualified electrician. Also be careful when putting up those Christmas lights Don’t cave in: Take care not to remove any loadbearing walls – with nothing to support it, a heavy roof could cave in, and cause severe structural damage. Be safe: Be extremely careful and check that the equipment carries British or European quality marks. If it comes with a safety manual, it is important to read it! Source: Confused.com

Choose and cut

THERE’S no getting away from it - the festive period is nearly upon us and preparations are now well under way. The long-standing tradition of families handpicking a Christmas tree for the festive period is experiencing something of a revival in the UK, according to the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA).

The trend, more widely known as choose and cut, has become a popular day out for families looking to select a real Christmas tree for their home, with sales using this method increasing by 50% the last year alone. By visiting a tree farm, a family can select a good quality tree that matches their desired height, shape and colour. As the tree is harvested there and then, they can be assured of its freshness; all without the hassle of waiting for it to be delivered. Christmas trees are believed to date back to 16th century Germany and were subsequently introduced into the UK during the Georgian period. Tree decorations were handmade and included items such as snowflakes, stars and paper baskets filled with sugared almonds. Rob Morgan of Gower Fresh Christmas Trees in Swansea commented: “Choose and cut is definitely growing in popularity - not only does it add to the Christmas experience, but customers know exactly where the trees have come from and that they are fresh. We’ve also found that the public are fascinated to see, first-hand, the work that goes into producing the perfect tree.” Roger Hay, secretary for the BCTGA, added: “Real Christmas trees not only look beautiful in the home, they also have a nostalgic seasonal aroma. For those after their own vision of a perfect Christmas tree, as well as an opportunity to enjoy a great day out with the family, choose and cut is proving to be a fashionable trend.” The BCTGA was established in 1979 to provide a quality standard for Christmas tree growers. The association champions the purchase of real Christmas trees and can offer advice on buying and caring for a Christmas tree.

Top station’s brick tree St Pancras International station in London has an alternative tree this year – made of Lego. Lego say it’s the tallest tree ever made using the toy building bricks, with more than 1,000 Lego baubles on 172 branches. Duncan Titmarsh from the professional Lego building company Bright Bricks created the concept.

Kent thieves caught in the act A Kent trio attempted to steal 138 Christmas trees from a Notcutts garden centre in Pembury, Kent this week. Local Police were called after a security guard spotted the three men climbing over a fence and carrying the fir trees away. They had smashed two CCTV cameras during the raid but missed hidden cameras which were still monitoring them. A trail of pine needles led the Police to the haul of trees, Christmas lights and two wheelbarrows ready to be loaded. The haul was thought to be worth thousands of pounds.

• Be sure you know what size (height and width) you need before heading to the garden centre or market. • There are different species of tree so it pays to shop around as trees differ in colour, fragrance etc. • Find trees that have been stored in shaded areas not in direct sunlight. • Consumers should ask the retailer when he/she gets the trees, obviously the more recent they’ve been delivered the fresher they are. • Do a freshness test on the trees. Green needles on fresh trees break crisply when bent sharply with the fingers - much like a fresh carrot. • Pines have different indicators because of the fibrous nature of their needles compared to firs. The needles on fresh pines do NOT break, unless they are very dry. • Look for other indicators of dryness or deterioration: excessive needle loss, discolored foliage, musty odor, needle pliability, and wrinkled bark. A good rule-of-thumb is, when in doubt about the freshness of a tree, select another one. If none of the trees look fresh go somewhere else. • Plan ahead what are you going to do with your tree after the festive season – plant it in a pot, or your garden or recycle it?

Care tips for Xmas When a Christmas tree is cut, over half of its weight is water. With proper care, you can maintain the quality of your displayed trees. • Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimising needle loss problems. • Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree. • Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go 6 to 8 hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don’t bruise the cut surface or get it dirty. • If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water. • To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands should provide 1 quarter of pint of water per inch of stem diameter. • Use a stand that fits your tree. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed. • Keep displayed trees away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day. • The temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake. • Drilling a hole in the base of the trunk does not improve water uptake. • Use of lights that produce low heat, such as miniature lights, will reduce drying of the tree. • Always inspect light sets prior to placing them on the tree. If worn, replace with a new set. • Always turn off the tree lights when leaving the house or when going to bed. • Never burn any part of a Christmas tree in a wood stove or fireplace. Happy Birthday Robot Robot, the hairdresser in Los Cristianos, is celebrating its 5th birthday, after opening way back on the 1st December 2006. Canarian Weekly called in to see proprietor, hairdresser and Canarian Weekly columnist Carl Pattison to see how he’s been getting on. Q. Carl, you’ve been on the island now for just over 5 years and had the business for the same amount of time, so what’s been the best bit? A. (He laughs) “The fact that I’m still open. I opened the salon at perhaps the worst time as we were going into recession, but we’re still here.” Q. Were the premises always a hairdressers? A. “No, originally it was a clothes shop and I built it up literally from nothing. Now my customer base runs into thousands.” Q. What’s been your biggest challenge here in Tenerife? A. “I would have to say the first three years were the most difficult and challenging, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve seen many just come and go after 18 months.” Q. What’s business like for you now? A. “It’s one hundred percent better, it’s getting like it used to be when I was in the UK. We have built up a very good rapport with our clients; they trust us and keep coming back.” Q. So are you having a massive birthday bash to celebrate? A. “No, I’m celebrating quietly with friends and clients, it’s my birthday as well, and obviously then we’re into the festive season.” Q. Do you plan to do anything differently for the coming year? Expand etc.? A. “No, we plan to play to our strengths which is hair. We’re focusing on hairdressing, concentrating

on what we do best. Our clients are 95% female, aged anything from 5–95!” Q. What are the latest trends in hairdressing? A. “Clients come in and say, have you seen this or that famous person? More than ever, everyone is obsessed with celebrity. A celebrity can have her hair done one day and my client can be having her own hair done the next. Clients even print off or bring their laptops in to show me the picture of what they want.” Q. What are the most sought after celebrity looks? A. “It has to be the colour of Cheryl Cole still, and, Jessie J’s fringe. Obviously over the years anything that is on the X-Factor proves to be very popular.”

Q. From trends to products, what is the must have product of the moment? A. “Moroccan oil, it’s so now, so brilliant and it’s the one product that I have ever sold the most of throughout my time in hairdressing. We sell it exclusively, and are the largest distributor here in the south, and it’s proving so popular the manufacturers cannot keep up with demand.” Q. Who assists you here now in the salon? A. “Lynsey (from Fife, Scotland) is still with me as stylist and has been so for 14 months now. She’s the best stylist ever. Her customer service is second to none, and she’s on the ball with customer’s hair, looking after them. She’s like another version of me, dare I say. We’re going to stay as we are now as in the past I’ve found it so dif-

ficult to find appropriate staff.” Q. We’ve spoken about the salon, but what about your customers, what are they like? A. “My customers are very loyal, they will wait for an appointment, swallows arrive here for the winter and have their hair cut the same day as they prefer me to do their hair.” Q. From how you talk about your customers they seem to be at the heart of what you do, is that correct? A. “Yes obviously, we listen to the needs and wants of our clients, we’re not just hairdressers. Sometimes I lose money as a result because I’ll advise someone not to have something as I don’t think it will suit them. They go somewhere else, have it done, it goes wrong, I then have to sort it out!”

Q. On a lighter note you must see and hear some funny things almost like confessions of a hairdresser. A. “Yes we do, the comment of the moment is ‘I can feel another column coming on’ then people say; `Don’t write about me in your column.` We’ve had roadworks going on around us and my clients have had to brave rivers of cement, walking in with plastic bags on their feet – there’s never a dull moment here.” Robot, Los Cristianos is open every day 10am until 6pm, apart from Sunday – they even open bank holidays. There are a few appointments left in the run up to the festive season but Carl urges you not to leave it too late to book, you have been warned!

Red veins, or just spiders? TELANGIECTASIA is the official term used for red veins, spider veins, dermal flares, dilated capillaries, broken capillaries or broken veins.

They all vary in size and shape and look like tiny veins on the surface of the skin. Red veins are caused by a number of factors, but appear when the small capillaries in the dermal layer of the skin expand into the skin’s surface and then form a series of visible, thread-like capillaries. When they are severe, these can appear like a group of interlinked veins and capillaries, sometimes with blood spots. The whole area then appears like a mass of red or pink skin, even with a blue/purple tinge sometimes. Spider naevi have acquired their name because they usually have a central blood spot, sometimes raised, with tiny capillaries spreading outwards like spiders legs. The veins are generally caused by some type of injury; either a blow to the skin, tweezing hairs or, perhaps, the removal of a cyst. Usually in these cases, treatment is very successful. Blood spots are a concentration of blood just under the skin, which can also be treated successfully. But if they are too large and raised, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Telangiectasia causes more trauma for the ladies, because men usually think and accept that they just have a ruddy

complexion - healthy, rosy cheeks! Some causes of Thread veins and Spider naevi Unfortunately, the problem is because of fragile, thin skin, which is usually vulnerable to severe extremes of weather, topical damage from strong cosmetic products or harsh home-care treatments. Because of the fragility of the skin, broken capillaries occur quite easily. The skin suffers when the capillaries expand and contract (skinflushing seems especially apparent in people with fragile/ thin skin). This results in the thinning of the capillary walls, which leads to rupturing of the veins, which, then results in blood becoming trapped under skin and, eventually, the appearance of broken red veins. When red veins have been caused by injury,) the blood vessels rupture. But as this is not through a weakness in the skin or underlying medical problems but down to a weakness in external abuse - such as squeezing spots or blackheads, or even severe knocks or blows to the body - treatment is extremely successful in these cases. High blood pressure is a common cause of thread veins, often occurring in over-weight, mature women. They are usually caused by the varying rate of bloodflow around the body, which results in weakened capillary walls. The skin of diabetes-sufferers is often dry and sen-

sitive, and it has a tendency to bruise easily. The blood circulation is poor and skin heals slowly, thus resulting in delicate skin susceptible to thread veins. Asthma-sufferers are also more prone to red veins, with the limited oxygen supply to the skin. Broken capillaries can often be seen around the nose and cheeks, and are usually a red/blue colour. It is common for red veins and/or spider naevi to appear during pregnancy but, fortunately, they often disappear after the birth of the baby. These are usually brought on as a result of weight-increase during pregnancy. Quite often, thread veins appear with the onset of Rosacea (an adult form of acne). The veins usually appear on the nose and cheek area alongside the classic symptoms of rosacea. Unfortunately, as the skin thickens and the spots form, along comes the pink/blue tinge of red veins. If an individual is susceptible to red veins, then diet can be an added factor. In many cases, hot drinks, spicy foods or alcohol can stimulate the skin and encourage broken capillaries. Smoking reduces the supply of oxygen to the skin, making it more susceptible to thread veins and skin damage. Smoking reduces the regeneration and production of skin cells and is therefore slower to heal. Exposure to extremes of temperature is one of the great contributors of weakened capillary walls and,

therefore, red veins. Hot saunas, cold showers, hot, sunny, humid days, excessive hot baths and working in a hot, steamy kitchen can contribute to thread veins. If the face is continually exposed to these extremes, it will eventually show its unhappiness by having permanently-dilated veins and capillaries. In many cases with liver diseases, thread veins and spider naevi tend to be highlynoticeable on the chest, and they can also appear on the face and arms. A side-effect of the prolonged use of some medication, such as steroid creams, can cause an increase in skin sensitivity and thus, is a likely cause of thread veins. Treatments As long as the individual does not have any contraindications, like haemophilia,

hepatitis B, diabetes, allergies, pregnancy or asthma, most thread veins and spider naevi on the face, neck and body can be treated successfully. The treatment of thread veins on the legs is quite a slow process, but success will be achieved with patience. There are many clinics which specialise in the treatment of red veins on both face and body. Facial red veins and those on the body can be reduced and, in many cases, cleared completely, by a variety of salon procedures. For example, using a variation of a form of electrolysis. This involves placing an extremely-fine needle on to the vein and introducing a small amount of lead, which results in the vein being coagulated and, eventually, destroyed. The capillary disappears

immediately after the treatment, and the skin will then become slightly red and sensitized. The practitioner will advise the use of after-care lotions, which will usually contain some type of calming aloe, witch hazel or calamine. These creams promote the healing and soothing process. It is important that the area worked on is kept clean and dry to minimise the risk of infection or scarring. Tiny scabs will appear a few days later and should be left alone. That means no picking or scratching! You are also advised: *Don’t use make-up or facial products for 24 hours. *Avoid any abrasion, such as exfoliation products, face flannels, towels, etc. *No sunbeds or sunbathing until the area is completely healed (three months is sometimes advised).

THE silly season has begun. The UK press are stating that Waitrose have sold out of Heston Blumenthal’s Hidden Orange Christmas Pudding which was retailing for approximately £14. Don’t worry, if you’re that desperate they’re now on eBay for ten times that amount!

Waitrose have also experienced what they call Delia Day. Following a huge surge in sales of Delia’s Classic Christmas Cake Prepared Ingredients box at Waitrose, the retailer declared last Sunday to be ‘Delia Day’ with sales of the cake box up almost 97% on last year. Delia’s boxes were flying off the shelves. Brits were reaching for the cake boxes to make on ‘Stir Up Sunday’, the last Sunday of the month before Advent, when people have traditionally prepared their Christmas puddings and cakes. Brits have followed Delia’s time honoured and much loved recipe for over 40 years but now they can enjoy her most popular recipe more easily. Waitrose launched the Delia prepared cake boxes into branches earlier than last year and due to increased demand had ordered almost three times as many. After the sell out success of 2010, this cake is now looking to beat sales from last year. The beautifully packaged silver box contains all the dry ingredients needed

to make Delia’s perfect Classic Christmas Cake. It helps reduce festive stress because all the ingredients have been carefully prepared and measured into the correct amounts to bake the festive treat. The box, still priced at only £10, contains dried fruit mix pre-soaked in brandy, soft dark brown sugar, flour, chopped almonds, black treacle and mixed spice with nutmeg plus Delia’s helpful instructions. Home cooks simply add their own eggs, butter, orange and lemon zests to the dry ingredients then mix everything together and bake. Brewer Greene King expects to create 3,000 jobs and 2,000 apprenticeships over the next three years.

Greene King’s chief executive Rooney Anand announced the news following another set of record results. In the six months to mid-Oc-

tober, like-for-like retail sales were up 4%, and profit before tax rose 5.6% to £77.2m. Sales of food in its pubs were up by 16%. Its recent purchase of the Capital Pub Company has already added an extra 35 retail outlets, and created 800 apprenticeships.

Starbucks drive-through STARBUCKS plans to create up to 5,000 jobs over the next five years as it ramps up its drive-through business in the UK.

Starbucks said the 200 drive-through outlets, in addition to 100 conventional store openings, would see around 5,000 new jobs. American Airlines go bust

American Airlines has filed for bankruptcy, its parent company has announced. AMR Corporation made a voluntary filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy re-organisation, but said it expected to continue operations normally. American’s chairman and chief executive Gerard Arpey also stepped down, and AMR’s board of directors named AMR chairman and CEO Thomas Horton as his replacement. The airline said in a statement: “American took this action in order to achieve a cost and debt structure that is competitive in the airline industry so that it can continue delivering world-class travel experience for its customers.” The airline, which serves 260 cities through an extensive network that reaches 50 countries and territories, said its flights will operate normally. I am confident American will emerge even stronger as a global leader known for excellence and innovation. The company will honour tickets and reservations as usual, and that its code-shares and frequent flyer programme are not affected.

Rumours had swirled for months that AMR would file for bankruptcy protection, after an unusual spike in pilot retirements, with the pilots trying to sell off their own stocks in the company. Shares in AMR have plunged 35 per cent since the beginning of November, leaving the stock at $1.62 before US markets opened Tuesday. At that price, the company has a market value of some $543million. In July, American Airlines, which with sister American Eagle has a fleet of 900 planes, announced a massive order for aircraft divided between US aerospace giant Boeing and European rival Airbus. American said it would buy 200 Boeing 737s and 260 Airbus A320 jets, both more fuel efficient than the aircraft it currently operates.

Thomas Cook finds £200m Thomas Cook is launching a national advertising campaign in a bid to reassure customers, now that the holiday company’s immediate financial future has been secured. After agreeing a new £200m banking facility, a letter from interim chief executive Sam Weihagan will state that holidays are “in safe hands”. Thomas Cook lost 75% of its value in a single day last week amid fears it was on the

verge of collapse. They have since recovered around half of that loss. But although Thomas Cook claims it is now on a sound financial footing, fears persist that the negative headlines may have scared holidaymakers away from the company. Bookings fell 30% last week amid uncertainty over the group’s future. Rival TUI Travel has run fullpage adverts for its Thomson brand that claimed: “Another holiday company may be experiencing turbulence, but

we are in really great shape.” Mr Weihagen’s letter will begin: “What a week it has been for Thomas Cook,” adding that it is now “an even stronger and more confident company” and members of the public “can be sure that your holiday really is in safe hands”. His words will play on the 170-year-old company’s history and will claim it is the “most recognised and established name in the industry”. The letter will add: “I have no doubt that we will still be in another 170 years and beyond.”

The new deal with its bankers, just one month after it last increased its loans, came after it said its French and Belgium markets saw bookings fall by up to 20% in recent weeks. A move into the Russian market had “got off to an extremely slow start”. The group has suffered from the impact of the Arab spring, which has hit bookings to Tunisia and Egypt. It is reported that the firm could axe up to 1,000 jobs by closing 200 of its 1,100

James Hollins, an analyst at Evolution Securities, said the new lending facility had secured Thomas Cook’s shortterm survival. Hilton Hotels expand Hilton is to create around 1,500 jobs as part of an expansion plan in the UK, which will see 20 new hotels being built over the next few years.

The firm is also expecting to open more than 110 new hotels across Europe, resulting in 8,500 new jobs by 2014. New UK sites will include Lincoln and Burton-on-Trent. Simon Vincent, Hilton’s European area president, said: “While unemployment figures in Europe continue to rise, Hilton Worldwide is experiencing an exciting period of growth which will see us continue to offer a wealth of rewarding career options.”

Audi’s five-star cracker!

AUDI have unveiled the promised fivedoor crackerjack version of their A1 supermini, and they plan to have it in UK showrooms early next year.

The A1 Sportback’s fivedoor machine is identical in size and style to the three-door, but designers have found an extra 6mm in both height and width which, they say, improves rear-seat room. The Audi A1 was an instant success when launched late last year, although that was one of the few major points of criticism in the three-door. Yet it exceeded a planned annual sales rate of around 18,000 cars, and the company believe volume should increase further with the launch of the Sportback, which should eventually account for about 70% of total sales. As you can see from the picture, the Sportback is a tasty offering. It’s compact, neat and, naturally, sporty looking. It will be offered with the same four-level engine with which the three-door began life. That means three petrol engines (ranging from a normally-aspirated 1.2-litre with 84bhp to a turbocharged and supercharged 1.6-litre with 184bhp, which comes as standard with a seven-speed twinclutch gearbox). The diesel is Audi’s economy showpiece, a 1.6-litre four producing 103bhp that emits just 99g/km of CO2. The luggage compartment capacity is on a par with the three-door version at 270 litres, increasing to 920 litres with the seats folded. Standard features include alloy wheels, split/folding rear seat, front and rear electric windows, air-conditioning, single CD audio system with MP3 compatibility and ESP with latest differential lock system. The options list for the A1 Sportback extends beyond the three-door

version by offering customers a choice of one of three contrasting colours, not only for the roof line as in the three-door, but also for the entire roof itself as well as, in S line models, the spoiler that extends from it. The Sportback will also expand on the 11 paint colours available for the three-door with a 12th colour, Samoa Orange, which will be available exclusively for the new fivedoor, with every model getting alloy wheels and a 6.5-inch colour display as standard. Next summer, the A1 Sportback will get the 141bhp, 184lb ft 2.0-litre “performance” diesel, which was introduced re-

cently to the three-door range. Its 0-62 time sprint acceleration is 8.5 seconds, yet its combined cycle economy is an impressive 68.9mpg, enabling Audi to offer a direct rival to MINI’s Cooper SD hatch. The entry-level Sportback 1.2 SE five-door will start at £13,980, rising to a hefty £21,270 for the hottest 182bhp 1.4 TFSI in sporty S line trim, and Audi dealers are taking orders now for delivery next spring. The A1 range won’t stop growing there, though, because Audi are also planning to launch a hot S1 version of the three-door in 2013, a cabriolet, and an extreme RS1 as well.

VW’s Alltrack has that rugged off-road look VOLKSWAGEN plan to launch a more rugged version of the Passat Estate next year, following an official unveiling at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opened on Wednesday.

The Alltrack, pictured, will come equipped with all-wheel drive as standard in the UK and will sit in VW’s line-up between the Passat estate and the Tiguan. While front-wheel drive and petrol versions will be offered in Europe, UK buyers will be able to choose only from a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with either 138bhp or 168bhp and equipped with VW’s 4Motion, allwheel drive technology. The lower-powered model gets a six-speed manual gearbox and the range-topper a six-speed DSG. VW claim the Alltrack has genuine off-road capabilities, which is emphasised with both its styling and equipment. The visual chang-

es include a new design for the front and rear bumpers, inspired by the Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, and flared wheel-arches wrapped in black plastic cladding. Despite the changes, the Alltrack’s length and width are identical to those of the Passat estate, and the suspension has been raised by 30mm for higher ground clearance. Another off-road addition for the Alltrack is VW’s “Off-Road Driving Programme”, which is also borrowed from the firm’s larger

SUVs. This system works up to 18mph and electronically tunes equipment to provide a more focused off-road drive. VW are actually pitching the Alltrack as an off-road lifestyle version of the Passat and have put particular emphasis on its towing ability. Order books are likely to open next April, ahead of the first deliveries in July. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but expect it to sit atop the Passat range, from around £26,000.

Xtreme Sports Bar’s Mitch had not lost a singles match for 18 months but Mick, from visitors Bar 180A, tore up that record in the first rubber as he hit two maximums. Justyn also recorded a 180, and the match was on a knifeedge after the singles at 3-2 to the home side. Bar 180 Captain Martin then rallied his lads and they produced a remarkable turnaround to take the match 5-3. Xtreme Sports have now lost their 22-match winning streak and Bar 180 are top! Expect this one to go down to the wire (no pun intended). Elsewhere, Phoenix thumped La Central to go third, and Yelas lost to

Target Army by the same scoreline. A special mention to young Beck, of Bar 180B, who hit his first ever 180 in the league. A future champion in the making there! La Cana Lancers’ recent good form was not enough to stop Sundowners going home with all the points as the Golf del Sur side maintained their six-point lead at the top of Division 2. The in-house derby at Ourplace came up with an away win for the Naturals, and Scruffy Macs’ 6-2 success at Marilyns keeps them safely in third spot. Naughty Nautas went up a place to fifth after beating Valle Vikings 2, while Shaz and Auntie Liz got the only point for the Flames as they lost at home to Tenerife Sun. Bad Girls/Boys took the trebles leg and the three points at Palms Sports Bar, while Summerland Hopefuls beat much-travelled Barracuda Hunters 6-2.

Tenerife grab point from unlucky Lugo Lugo 1 CD Tenerife 1 WHEN you travel to play a promotion rival and return with a point, you celebrate. Not with an open top bus parade, obviously, but with the sort of clenched fist that has become Jose Mourinho’s trademark. Lugo won this division last season but missed out on promotion as second place Guadalajara triumphed in the play-offs. They have done a great job of getting over the disappointment and have made a fine start. But they have found life tougher over the last few weeks when up against their fellow big boys. This was always a decent match and both sides attacked in the first half. Tenerife made just the one enforced change from the side who snuck past Celta B the previous week. Captain Medina was suspended, but he wasn’t missed. Both sides squandered early chances before Lugo took the lead halfway through the first half through Belencoso. But Tenerife fought back and got their reward five minutes from time. Nice interplay between Chechu and Zazo set up Perona, whose smart finish made it six for the season for Position 1 Real Madrid CF Castilla

This weekend, Tenerife host Atletico Madrid B in a midday kick-off in what will be an old boys’ reunion. Four of the Tenerife squad have pulled on a red-and-white Atletico jersey. While the injured Sergio Rodriguez and Pablo Sicilia must watch from the stands, two others will do battle defiantly. Aragoneses had a season in the capital in 2004 and Victor Bravo two years, from 2006. Bravo played a full campaign with the B team and he said in press conference this week how much he enjoyed his time with Atletico: “It was a fun time. I have fond memories of my time there. “But this is my job now here with Tenerife and we need to keep our great run going. We know we can play better, but the points are good for the games played, and we have lost only two matches all season.” Victor is right, and a win is Points

understand the fans’ criticism and respect that. “But we have played only a dozen or so matches with a brand-new team. It takes time. We will and are improving. The results are very good and that is the most important thing in football. “We want promotion. Let’s get that in June and then we can look back and ask, ‘How did we play in November’?” It’s a fair point. Football director Pedro Cordero, who is in charge of player-signings, revealed this week that they are close to bringing in a new striker. Don’t hold your breath, mind! Also this week, it was revealed that the club is now 38 million euros in debt. This is a sharp rise from the 26-million-euro mark of a few years ago. On the plus side, this is not as bad as most of the clubs comparable with Tenerife. Some sides have debts of over 100 million euros. Also, Tenerife will receive nearly 12 million euros from a land sale before the new year. On the down side, the club has to repay around 20 million euros of debt before September. That is not gonna happen, so let’s hope the big-wigs have a secret masterplan. Elsewhere, Premier League Everton were on the Island for a few days this week. They stayed at Abama and trained at the popular 3T complex in La Caleta. Everton are regular visitors to Tenerife and will be back in January.

Palms way off-Target LAST Tuesday saw the halfway point of the season, and if the second half is as tight as the first, then we are in for an amazing finale. Defending champions Palms A played their first Tuesday match in four weeks and were caught cold by Target Bar, who are bang in form right now. Palms A were never in the contest and the Los Cristianos crew were full value for their 7-3 win. Palms do have matches in hand, but they will need to up their game if they are to challenge, especially with the top four all winning again. Tenerife Hammers A have a bigger squad than Manchester City, but they are finding a way to keep everyone happy at the moment. They were too strong for Dreamers, winning 8-2 despite another Jambo loss. Summerland Superstars are also flying. Their 9-1 thrashing of bar-mates Allstars was their nine straight win. Hoops will be delighted with the 7-3 win at Bar 180 A, while Trap Door produced a stunning 7-3 success at normal homers Phoenix Knights. Gaffers A are still in contention after a 7-3er at Nauta A, and Terrace Bar A just about got past basement boys Toscales. Atlantis Sharks will be pleased with their away point at Legends. Robin’s final-frame win over Little Lee gave Bar 180 C a 6-4 win at Tasca to secure their first victory since August!

There was a major upset in Division Two as Exiles A ended the final unbeaten record. The Silencio squad are the draw specialists but at Barrcuda Bandits they managed to sink the important blacks and should have won by a margin wider than 6-4. Bandits’ lead has now been cut to six points after Phoenix Potters scrambled a Los Abrigos derby draw at La Cana. Connors are flying and they made it a five wins on the spin at home to Barracuda Hunters. They are up to third after Summerland Elite’s shock loss at stablemates Lupain. Tenerife Hammers C usually improve when the Christmas decorations go up - and sure enough, they got a rare win at Inn The Pink. Toscales A-Team also tasted victory over Terrace Bar B, and Tenerife Pool Tables made it three wins in four as they defeated Target Rangers. Wandabar A and Nauta B drew. We have new leaders in Division Three. The Treehouse now lead the way after Gaffers B lost for the first time at home, against Next Door. It will come as a surprise to a few, but the Torsviscas team are now unbeaten since mid-September, and they are improving nicely. C&A Titans stay in the title mix following a close win at James’ Place, while Dos Hermanos won at Sunshine Bar and Legendary Jokers did Exiles B 8-2. Lucky Leprechaun and Wandabar B drew in Silencio.
