Starlight Crystal Marshall

I shared a kiss with the one who was the nicest And I flunked out of geometry for more. Sharp corners just weren’t made for love.

But you were just a handful of a person And I was a million maybes. Together, we were starlight.

Where have you gone, my love? And who did you turn into?

I hope the news reports still make you cryI hope you are still that soft. I hope you still sing on the city bus-

Remember when I sang along?

BLO

OOM

Bloom is a new coming of age short film about four teenage girls; Sabrina, Rianne, Tracey, and Ruby. We enter the world of these girls at a point in their lives when they are just beginning to grapple with the greater issues of adulthood. Their world is a mĂŠlange of school subjects, dance routines, music, and the looming issue of sex. In this film we get to see how they manage themselves internally and together as friends. As their summer comes to an end we realize that the sun may also be setting on a part of their youth that they will never be able to get back.

Bloom subtly explores friendship, urgency to grow, community, dreams, child abuse, alongside a few others. Whilst the film is delicate, fun, and nostalgic, Jesse also believes it to be important. Touching on universal themes, but also specific subject matters placed to evoke thoughts and hopefully conversation. The director, Jess, has a trilogy of short films he would ideally like to complete. All three films meddle with the theme of identity alongside a few others. Jesse was very aware of the slew of coming of age short films and feature films, but especially in short narrative landscapes. “I knew I had to create real characters, three dimensional characters that essentially people could relate to. If I was able to do that, then people would come on this journey with us and the girls. That’s what this film is; it’s a journey, but also a snippet of time observing youth and also the challenges these girls are overcoming or will have to overcome.” Camille Nock, the assistant director of Bloom, states, “These four girls are powerful in their own right. They represent; hope, dreams, love, and the film depicts real issues.” Georgia James, who plays Sabrina in the film, said, “It’s just refreshing to pick up a script that isn’t your stereotypical coming of age film with bland characters, I was blown away when I found out Jesse had written this.”

The writing style for Bloom was very particular for Jesse. He states the film is a sociological perspective. A film that investigates and explores rather than offering definitive answers. Visually the film has a nostalgic and delicate feel to it due to the grading and colour pallete used in the final cut. The landscape was important to Jesse, because he felt it said enough about the characters and some of their families’ social economics without requiring too much detail. The fields where some of the action takes place aided his vision; “when you’re younger, going to the park or up and down on the bus was more than enough to satisfy you in terms of a day with your friends. These fields represented freedom essentially.” Luke Farley, the DOP for Bloom, is a relative newcomer but has worked on many music videos and dance narrative projects. He is part of a duo Leave No Trace who film a lot of footage for NTS Radio. What attracted Jesse to Luke for the project was his ability to understand that cinematography is essentially choreography of physical and emotional movement between the camera and the actor. The audience member needed to feel as though the camera was a character itself, by its choice of movement. By being on the same page early on before shooting, it allowed them to work efficiently on set and allowing the work of the script and the art director, Claire Lemaigre to come alive.

How to Be a Witch Crystal Marshall Brew your stew with mushrooms and moss. Stir in lavender, and garnish With dust of pearl. When cool, spoon into a tortoise shell. Only consume under a new moon. On rainy nights, transform words like Thistle, incense, and lacewing Into mittens with knitting needles. Don’t worry if the thumbs aren’t even. Bury old keys in your flower patch. Let them rest until they rust Into fish bones, brittle and ancient. Unearth in the spring. Gift them to the field mice. Pay no attention to the tadpoles in your pondOnly greet the toads. Always keep your kettle onAlways keep these secrets.

That lo-fi 90s life we all dream about by Kaitlyn Tiffany You know what I’m talking about right? Coffee brewing at a Brooklyn cafe. Misty mornings in Portland caught on camera. Literally anything related to Mac Demarco. Driving in a cozy used car, the feeling of fuzzy fabric covered seats, and windshield wipers going slow on a calm rainy day. Cassette and VHS tapes. Extra-large thrifted denim jackets. Dirty white converse that show where they have traveled...

How to live a more authentic life Take pictures that reflect who you are, rather than some athletically pleasing, social media curated bullshit. Listen to music that makes you happy, regardless of whether it’s “cool” or not. Wear what makes you feel confident, cut your hair however you want, don’t cover up your blemishes to look good for others (unless you really want to), and embrace your natural state of existing (#bodyposi). Go to concerts without a camera. Bring your CD player on the train instead of your spotify. Take breaks from the internet and technology. Go to the movies or get coffee BY YOURSELF if you can’t find anyone to go with, don’t waste your time wishing you could do something, just do it. Lastly, the most important tip...MAKE MEMORIES! Enjoy every important moment of your life and breathe in the beauty around you. Look up from your phone, have deep conversations with your friends and family about meaningful topics, and be the kind of person who does things, instead of the kind of person who just waits around for their life to begin.

Grow Roughly Like a Girl Crystal Marshall Grow roughly like a girl. Let your roots plunge deep into rich earth, curl your tendrils around the coals And hug them to your chestBring forth your diamonds. Travel far among the winter-fed rivers. Let them sing clear mountain songs, their milkweed blooming songs, their sweet bluebell ringing songs, for they sing them just for you. Kiss the wild hermit on the cheek. Kiss him For the way he spins hot sand into glass, Steaming topaz and gold, kiss him Because he smiles at the stars. My child, don’t forget that church steeples are arrows showing you home.

“love poem Zoe Cirelli there is no sadder day than the day one realizes that the roses growing in their mind have shriveled and died. the warm, soft pink color that had once occupied my thoughts has turned to a titanium gray. instead of swooning at the love I see, I despise it. instead of longing for a great romance, i reject it the joy i took in dreaming about love has gone away and im not sure when or if it will be back but, until then, i will think of love, as one would an old friend because at one point, i had it

Where Do I Go From Here? Kaitlyn Tiffany

Tip #1: Keep a diary. You will be grateful to have it one day, it will bring so much nostalgia Tip #2: Don’t stress yourself out too much. It is good to have priorities, but too much worrying can leave you drained and unenthusiastic Tip #3: Remember that school isn’t the only important thing in your life. Research topics that interest you and sprinkle your life with things and people that make you happy

Tip #4: Make time for friends outside of school. Go to the movies, get coffee, take nature walks, and/or visit new places with them. Create bonds with people you don’t know that well and strengthen the ones you already have. Tip #5: Believe in endless possibilities and stay positive.

KING OF The music blasts out the window as we speed down the highway. We zoom past the streetlamps and yell out the lyrics to our favourite songs. My hair flows out of the car and into the wind, flying. I peel my seatbelt off and turn the radio up louder. The car is booming and we honk at the truck trailing behind us. “You’re never gonna stop us.” All I can hear is my heartbeat. It is 3:06 in the morning and we are driving back from a Halsey concert, covered in sweat and tears. I taste the salty air. The sky is dark blue, with the light hum of the city in the distance. The lace is ripping off my shirt with the strings of black turning into a fringe. The rearview mirror reveals a tired, teenage girl, but she is glowing. I throw my bandana onto the road and watch it scream under a tire. Lighting my friend’s cigarette, we turn the stereo lower and laugh. The road trip has just begun.
