CANFORD IMPACT
Supporting and Engaging the Canford Community
Recently we said a sad but fond farewell to Angie Cottom, one of our much loved Housekeeping team, who has retired after 43 years of service to Canford. Alongside the many happy memories which were shared about life in the Canford Community, the observation was also made that when Angie started in 1979 we had waves of strikes, economic mayhem, social dislocation and political polarisation very much woven into our daily lives. Does that feel and sound familiar?
There is no doubt that we are in times of severe crisis nationally, and indeed globally. It’s easy to become melancholy and fatalistic but we need to focus on the good things around us and see the glass as half full. As Dale Carnegie, the American writer said, “We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses blooming outside our windows today” . Sage words which deserve time and reflection I feel. I am perhaps more fortunate than many in that I get daily uplifts from living and working with an amazing group of young people and staff at Canford. There are many roses blooming here through every season of the year!
It has been such a delight to see our vibrant community partnership programme revitalised post-Covid. Once again we have literally hundreds of Canfordians and many staff actively engaged in a wide array of meaningful ongoing projects which truly make a difference. Seeing the recent visit by the young people from the City Reach project for a Christmas party at Canford was brilliant. We had over 50 visitors enjoying great fun with over 50 Canfordians from across the year groups on the day. I received a lovely email from one Shell pupil from Ukraine whose own life has been turned upside down in recent months which said:
“I’m writing this email to say thank you so much for this amazing opportunity you gave me. I really enjoyed spending time with the children today,to play,to draw with them, they’re brilliant! These days,it’s very significant to understand that we need to make children happy so that they can feel good and be a part of society and that they can have
‘A school community where all are inspired to explore, empowered to express and challenged to excel’.
From the HEADMASTER
that happiness they need, especially children from other countries where they cannot stay any more.Thank you for giving the children such opportunities.“
If you want to find out more about the many community partnerships with which Canford is engaged please do visit https://www.schoolstogether.org/ and type in ‘Canford’.
Our school values which focus on Purposeful Engagement, Courageous Attitude, Humble Ambition and Gracious Leadership underpin our culture and our community, and I have had the privilege and pleasure of seeing Canfordians ‘walking the talk’. To further emphasise and acknowledge the importance of these values as influences on what we think, say and do, we have launched a half-termly ‘Canford Values Award’ which is presented to one member of each house who has embodied those values through their deeds.
Our desire to make a difference to the lives of others in a meaningful way also lies at the heart of our bursary programme through the Martin Marriott Foundation and we are fully committed to broadening access to a Canford education through the provision of financial support. The Labour Party’s plans to raise £1.7 billion from putting VAT on school fees and removing business rate relief will put a huge strain on this ambition and it is clear that those driving this policy have not done their homework. A new report from Oxford Economics provides national level data to quantify the economic contribution of independent schools. In 2021, according to independent economic analysis:
• Schools affiliated to the Independent Schools Council (ISC) made a £14.1 billion contribution to the UK economy. That is equivalent to 0.7% of total UK GDP in that year, and to the total economic activity generated in a city the size of Sheffield.
• The activities of ISC schools also have a significant impact on UK employment. In 2021, they supported around 282,000 jobs across the country, equivalent to the total employed population of Liverpool.
• ISC schools also supported £4.3 billion in tax revenues
for the UK Exchequer.
• Scaling the results up to all independent schools across the UK, we estimate their total economic footprint to have been £16.5 billion, associated with over 328,000 jobs, and £5.1 billion in tax revenues.
• The study also found that independent schools save the taxpayer £4.4 billion every year by providing places for pupils who could otherwise be expected to take up a place in the state-funded sector. The ISC schools’ share of that total is £3.8 billion.
Canford is no different in terms of its contribution to our local community, the local job market and the local economy. Should this policy become reality it will have a real and significantly negative impact on the lives of many young people, and many of these are not the children of the super rich or even the reasonably wealthy. To give a human example I opened a Christmas card from one of our bursary pupils which contained some of the most beautiful sentiments I have read from a pupil since I started teaching in 1994. These words were not all about gratitude to the school for being given such a wonderful education, although that reflection was there, but it was more about the raw excitement and pure joy when viewing the vistas which had opened up through being part of the Canford Community – and I am in no doubt that this young man will have a real impact on our world as a result of this opportunity. It is for this reason that we must keep finding the means to give that bursary support as we look ahead. I feel strongly that society and the world will be a better place as a result of such efforts which go far beyond the charge of tokenism which some level at us. As Mother Teresa said “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.”
News from the DEVELOPMENT OFFICE
Welcome back! 2022 saw the Canford Community calendar packed full of in-person events. From reunion lunches, OC London Drinks, Friends of Canford social and fundraising events, to our annual Careers Convention and so much more, it was a pleasure to welcome you back to Canford with no restrictions.
In my last two annual report articles I promised that we would continue to strive to gather the classes of 2020 and 2021 together for their Leavers’ Ball. After three attempts, we finally made it and what a joyous occasion it was to bring those two year groups together. Emma Large D20, former Head of School summed up the feeling in her email to myself and the Headmaster:
‘I wanted to email you to thank you on behalf of myself and my year for a truly wonderful ball last week.Everyone I have spoken to since had a fantastic time - it was amazing to see everyone again and spend the evening with people I hadn’t seen in two years, most of whom I never even had the chance to say goodbye to.I think it was very thoughtful and admirable that the Canford team honoured their promise of hosting a proper Leavers’ball for our two year groups.I have a number of friends from other schools who were less fortunate and have been let down, and are very envious of Canford’s commitment to us.You gave us the opportunity to create new memories with old teachers and peers in a place we look back on so fondly. We are all grateful.’
Amidst our busy calendar, it was time to really galvanise our plans for the Centenary celebrations. June and September saw the Development and Marketing departments collaborating closely and working with OC Will Holloway F99 and George Farthing C20 to produce the Centenary film featuring many aspects of Canford life and guest OCs. The launch of two of our major events, the Centenary Foundation Service (which is now fully booked) and the Proms in the Park Garden Party has been incredibly encouraging with many OCs and parents booking tickets.
We are so looking forward to these plus the Centenary OC London Drinks in October. There are many other projects and smaller events taking place throughout this year so do keep an eye on the centenary web page for updates.
Fundraising for the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries remains a big priority for us and this report provides me with the opportunity to thank those who support us so generously either with a one-off or regular donation. Finances are difficult for so many at present and the demand we are seeing for bursary support is greater than ever. Our aim is to continue to provide for as many pupils as we have done in the past with the hope of increasing this but we can only achieve this with help from the Canford Community. We are incredibly grateful for all that you do and sincerely hope that you will continue to support us in the year ahead.
We look forward to seeing more of the Canford Community this year for what will be some of our biggest attended events for a long while. HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY CANFORD! Do come along and celebrate with us.

SUPPORTING THE MARTIN MARRIOTT FOUNDATION FOR BURSARIES AT CANFORD
LADY CHARLOTTE’S WALK
Your name set in stone
Lady Charlotte’s Walk leads up to the new library at Canford. It is edged with stones on both sides which are growing in number as more from our community set their names in stone and in doing so contribute to the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries.
Many leave a simple message with their name, house and year, some honour their parents and a few have quirky humorous messages.
Sponsor a stone and have your name engraved for a lifetime link to Canford.

LADY CHARLOTTE GUEST
Lady Charlotte Guest was a woman before her time in so many ways. She had a genuine social conscience and a desire to improve the lives of her husband’s workforce both in Wales and more locally in Dorset. She stood for a degree of female equality in an age when such things were a distant dream.
She was highly educated, dynamic and deeply engaged with the running of Canford Manor and she was responsible for ensuring that the extraordinary collection of Assyrian friezes, now so inextricably linked to the history of our school, were brought to Canford by Sir Henry Layard.
Lady Charlotte’s translation of the Mabinogion became the standard for nearly a century. The first volume was published in 1838. She also wrote a Boys Mabinogion containing the earliest Welsh tales of King Arthur, and translated a number of medieval songs and poems. Charlotte’s translations were influential enough for Tennyson to base his Geraint and Enid in The Idylls of the King on her writings. As an accomplished linguist, and the wife of a foremost Welsh ironmaster, John Josiah Guest, she became a leading figure in the study of literature and the wider Welsh Renaissance of the 19th century.

LOOKING AFTER CANFORD’S PAST AND BUILDING ITS FUTURE
‘We shape our buildings; thereafter, our buildings shape us’
SIR WINSTON CHURCHILLWinston Churchill frequently stayed in Canford Manor at the end of the 19th century when visiting his aunt, Lady Cornelia Guest, and, while we might never know whether he was really shaped by his experiences at Canford, his comments are undoubtedly apt for the thousands of Canfordians who have lived and learned within the Charles Barry-designed Victorian mansion that has been the beating heart of Canford School since 1923.
However, the demands of health and safety legislation and fire regulations have made continued sleeping accommodation in the Manor House unsustainable and the boys of School House have already relocated to a brand-new purpose-built building on the site of Old Court House. In their wake, Canford Manor is being re-purposed to house all three day houses and to provide additional teaching and meeting rooms, thereby ensuring that as many current and future Canfordians as possible will have the opportunity to be shaped by their learning experience within the historic building.
The building’s new role has already begun with Lancaster pupils moving into newly refurbished facilities at the start of the Christmas Term, followed by Wimborne in February 2023 and work on the new accommodation for Salisbury gathering pace, but the old building has provided some particularly interesting challenges for the construction teams. In particular, meeting the stringent requirements of modern building regulations has meant removal of a huge quantity of paper sound insulation material from beneath the floorboards, while major structural components above the Old Library were discovered to have sagged by up to nine inches over the last century or so.
The occupants of School, Court and Franklin Houses were joined by the boarders from Monteacute in January who now occupy our second brand-new boarding house overlooking the CCF Assault Course and the Adby allweather sports pitch. This has co-located all of our boy boarders together at the southern end of the site, with the girls’ boarding houses already clustered in the north-east corner and our academic and co-curricular facilities forming a campus located in the middle.
David BrookSUPPORT and recognition
As we celebrate the recent refurbishment of the Manor House we have a new and exclusive offer for support and recognition. There are currently two rooms (with two more to follow) that need a name. Following the success of room sponsorship in the new library – ‘The Rathbone Room’ and ‘Dugdale’ – we would like to offer the opportunity for you to sponsor and name a room in Canford’s Manor House.
ROOM 1
This room on the first floor of the Manor House was formerly the bedroom used by the Prince of Wales when he visited the Guest family at Canford Manor. This room is 41 square metres and looks south over the sunken lawn with beautiful views. The room will be used for meetings, events and entertaining and will be accessed via the Grand Stairs.
Known as “The Crown Dormitory” by generations of School House pupils, the room now has the refurbished “crown” feature originally placed over the guest bed returned to its former position. It had been removed in the early 2000s as it was in a poor state of repair.
Suggested sponsorship donation of £12,000
ROOM 2
Adjacent to Room 1, we believe this room was Lady Charlotte Guest’s bedroom. This room is 32 square metres and has an equally captivating view. The room will be used for meetings, pupil groups, events and entertaining, and will also be accessed via the Grand Staircase.
Suggested sponsorship donation of £9,000
Further details regarding future rooms will be provided in due course as they become available. All sponsorship for the above will support the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries. For more details or to discuss this further, please contact Rowena Gaston rjg@canford.com 01202 847471

The Martin Marriott FOUNDATION
The Martin Marriott Foundation (MMF) raises funds to provide transformational bursaries for deserving pupils who will benefit greatly from a Canford education but whose families are in no position to afford it. Funds raised through the MMF support both day and boarding pupils.
13.5% of pupils at Canford are in receipt of some bursary support
Almost 7% receive 75% in bursary support
Almost 3% receive 100% in bursary support
We would like to increase our support for 100% bursary places to 10% over the next 10 years.
This is ambitious but we make no apology for this! Pupils in receipt of a bursary gain tremendously AND the impact that they have on our community is immeasurable.
THE CANFORD COMMUNITY AT WORK
Our annual fund in 2022 reached £91,000 and this will fund a Royal SpringBoard pupil for their final two years at Canford. This is a tremendous testament to the power of collective giving, your generosity and support. We are hoping to find support from major donors but know that many are not in a position to give large amounts. However, this total signifies the power of the Canford Community at work. Together, we can all make a difference.
OUR GOAL
Drawing on our success and the fantastic support of the Canford Community our Annual Fund goal for 2023 will be £80,000. This figure will once again start the fund for a Royal SpringBoard pupil for their first two years at Canford.
MATTHEW
Matthew came to Canford on a bursary via SpringBoard and the Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy. His mother was instrumental in trying to get access to a boarding school for Matthew to improve his educational opportunities. Matthew didn’t want to come! He knew it would be difficult to start with and was very reluctant to step out of his comfort zone. He has cousins who had accessed a private education and so it was not totally unknown to him but it was still a massive change.
Coming from East London, Canford was quiet, very dark at night and in the middle of nowhere! It took a while but Matthew settled in well and talking with his mother, the changes in Matthew just in the first few months were very marked. He had never been particularly sporty but he quickly got involved in everything Canford had to offer.
Matthew has gained a great deal from Canford and in turn has also added a tremendous amount to the Canford Community. He has found a real personal drive and purpose to his work where previously he could have been easily distracted. He has thrown himself into everything and has worked hard to break down stereotypes. He admits that he could have been at high risk of drifting and not developing his full potential. He has kept in touch with friends from his previous school and can see a marked difference in their experiences.
“Canford has helped me to change my mentality, my goals and my ambitions.” In his final year he was Deputy Head of School. A position to be proud of and very well deserved.
BURSARIES
LUCY
Lucy came to Canford from a local middle school. Her passion is English Literature and she has always wanted to go to either Oxford or Cambridge. She knew that coming to Canford would improve her chances. The application and testing process was quite daunting and to Lucy, Canford looked otherworldly. There was added pressure as Lucy knew that without a 100% bursary, she would not be able to attend. When her application was successful and she received the letter offering her full funding, she cried.
Settling in at Canford was challenging as many Shells had arrived from Prep Schools all knowing each other and there were sharp learning curves to conquer. Lucy found lessons very different. She was allowed to question and was not told off for ‘asking’. By her own admission, Lucy found a few subjects difficult but the specific learning clinics offered were very helpful and teachers, especially Mrs Thornburrow, were kind and helpful.
Lockdown was not an easy time for young people generally but Lucy found the online lessons and support at Canford invaluable. If she hadn’t attended Canford, she feels that she may not have coped with A levels at all but the support she received ‘has been amazing’. Lucy has offers to study English Literature at Cambridge, Edinburgh and Durham. She would like to go on to complete a Masters and PhD. “The last few years have been truly transformative and I owe everything to Canford.”
ARIAN
Arian chose to apply to Canford as he felt he needed a change and really wanted to have the ability to express himself and access more opportunities. When he visited for his entrance tests he stayed with Mr Vandvik (Housemaster) but living relatively locally, he hadn’t considered a boarding place and the cost would have been even more prohibitive.
When Arian was accepted on a full bursary he was ecstatic and his family were delighted. He joined in the Sixth Form during the Covid-19 pandemic which meant starting a new school and trying to make friends and build relationships online. This was not easy but he knew he was already getting a great head start to his Sixth Form years. When School returned to in-person, Arian boarded in Court House.
“It was great! Adapting to shorter lessons was different but it really does work and I always felt at my best, fresh and very productive. I took part in so much sport which I loved”
Arian describes the different options and support he received at Canford to be exceptional. He did A Levels in Maths, History and French and through the careful considered support and research he received from his tutor, he will complete a very unusual university programme consisting of two bachelor degrees across 4 years – 2 years at SciencesPo in France and 2 years at Columbia, NYC. Arian received a full scholarship for this Ivy League establishment. Before coming to Canford, Arian considered himself to be very quiet and reserved and he felt his interests were being constrained. Arian made a very positive impression on the Canford Community and was appointed as Head of School after less than one year at Canford. When asked what difference coming to Canford has made to him ... “It has unlocked my character and allowed me to excel.”
AGNES
Agnes came to Canford for the Sixth Form from a local grammar school during the Covid-19 pandemic which meant starting a new school and trying to make friends online. She found this quite tough as she is naturally shy. However, she could already sense that the Canford Community was welcoming like a family. Her relationships in House were very close knit quite quickly. Agnes could also immediately see the difference in the quality of her online tuition. It was totally incomparable to what she had experienced at her previous school.
Canford opened up the opportunity for Agnes to try rowing as a sport. By her own admission she had never been sporty but she absolutely loves rowing. “The best thing I’ve ever done!” It has really helped to make her experience at Canford special. She enjoyed the atmosphere at the Boat Club and can see that the sport has provided her with transferable skills. She competed for Canford at Henley Women’s Regatta and hopes to continue rowing at university. Agnes is also grateful for some of the extras that have been funded e.g. the Summer Ball, through the Michael Toosey fund for pupils in receipt of a bursary. Agnes’ dream is to go to the University of Aberdeen to study Medicine and then focus on rural medicine. Looking back on her experience, Agnes feels that Canford allowed her to be surrounded by great people and a superb environment where there is always someone there for you.
Bursary Pupil Selection
Finding the right pupils for our bursary programme is vital. Once a place has been offered at Canford any pupil may apply for a Bursary, some may be Scholars, others may not be. The level that we award varies according to individual circumstances and families have to demonstrate a genuine need. Money raised via our fundraising wholly supports pupils coming to Canford on a 100%+ bursary place.
Largely, although not exclusively these are awarded via our partnership with Royal SpringBoard, the UK’s largest boarding school bursary charity, providing life-transforming opportunites for disadvantaged and vulnerable young people in 120 independent and state boarding schools.
All of the children and young people that Royal SpringBoard supports are from families where the household income has been assessed as being well below that needed to fund a boarding school education. They either are currently, or have been, looked after in the care system; vulnerable and on the ‘edge of care’ due to difficult home lives; or are from areas with high levels of social deprivation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Working in partnerships at community level and with Local Authorities, SpringBoard identify young people for whom a bursary placement at boarding/independent school offers a life-transforming opportunity
• They then match those young people to available 110%-funded bursary places at schools best-suited to their needs and interests. These bursaries ensure that, in addition to covering school fees, SpringBoarders have the means to fully embrace the opportunities they encounter, including access to uniform and sports equipment, learning materials and participation in extracurricular activities.
• Support is provided to ensure SpringBoarders thrive throughout their placements.
• Beyond the bursary, SpringBoarder alumni are supported to continue to aim high and realise their ambitions, navigate fulfilling careers and make positive contributions in their communities.
Canford works closely with Royal SpringBoard and associated partnership organisations and has developed excellent relationships in order to identify and select pupils who will benefit most from a bursary and in turn give back in so many ways to both Canford and their home community. We currently have eight pupils at Canford who have been referred to us via SpringBoard.
By securing fully-funded bursaries at boarding schools, Royal Springboard, together with Canford and the network of boarding schools across the UK, provides these children and young people with the opportunity to move to a safe and structured environment, away from often troubled and challenging circumstances. Whilst ensuring that such children will be academically able to thrive, we do not see just the most able or talented, but those who stand to gain most from, and contribute to, a boarding education. Once at Canford, there is subtle but additional pastoral care in place for bursary pupils to ensure that their transition to Canford is smooth and enables them to thrive. In addition, Royal SpringBoard provide support to pupils in their home environment during holiday periods.
“Perhaps the most validating statistic is that which Pro-Bono Economics’ recent report on our work found, that “on average, ‘SpringBoarders’ gain the equivalent of 12 months of educational progress.” This analysis was based on just our Sixth Form entry programme cohort – proving how transformative a fully-funded bursary can be for so many”.
If you Will, they can NINEVEH
Leaving a gift to Canford in your Will is a wonderful way to ensure that the school continues to thrive and provide tremendous opportunities for young people for generations to come. All gifts big or small are greatly appreciated.
Providing for Canford in your Will demonstrates a tremendous commitment on your part, one that we think should be honoured during your lifetime. The Nineveh Legacy Society is our way of honouring and thanking those who remember Canford in their Will.
Below are examples of how this would work in practice.
LEGACY SOCIETY
The Society is named in honour of the lasting legacy of the Assyrian Frieze brought from Nineveh by Sir Austen Henry Layard and the impact of this on the development of Canford. Membership of the Nineveh Legacy Society is granted to all those who have signalled an intention to make a bequest to Canford. Nineveh Legacy Society members are invited each year to a lunch at Canford to honour their commitment to the school. If you would like to find out more about leaving a legacy to Canford, including the inheritance tax benefits please contact Rowena Gaston or visit www.canford.com/Nineveh-Legacy-Society
We were delighted to welcome Nineveh Legacy Society members and donors to our Nineveh Lunch in November.
“Throughout my life I have benefited from luck and good fortune and seen the importance of education but that alone does not generate true development. Attitudes and behaviours are also essential for people to achieve their potential and that gives rise to true growth and innovation. I have seen at first-hand the benefit of Canford’s ethos, values and commitment to an holistic education and by working with the abilities and limitations of individual students.
I wish to give something back that will promote opportunity for others and I believe that the Nineveh Legacy Society together with Canford School are the best way for me to achieve this.”
ERIC WALLINGTON“Having been back to see the school several times over the years my wife and I were always impressed by the ever-increasing new building and the no expense spared level of equipment and opportunity provided. The ambitious future plans outlined by the Headmaster at every visit were never less than impressive as has been the money raising ability of Rowena and her team. The greatest impression though has always been the evidently relaxed and friendly behaviour of the then current pupils not to mention their patient attitude to old men’s inaccurate reminiscences.
Whilst always willing to give fairly regular donations to the Martin Marriott Foundation and earlier fundraising appeals, the updating of our wills combined with the fortuitous timing of a nudge from Rowena inspired the decision to leave a legacy to the school.
Being able to meet some of the current and previous bursary holders at a recent event reinforced the correctness of that decision and the hope that the Foundation will be able to continue an increasing number of bursaries in the future to provide the chance for a greater number of potential pupils who would otherwise be unable to afford to go to the school.”

Canford allowed me to be surrounded by great people and a superb environment where there is always someone there for you.
It has unlocked my character and allowed me to excel.
The last few years have been truly transformative and I owe everything to Canford.
If you would like to support the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries, there are many ways in which you can give:
ONLINE AUCTION
THANK YOU!
It is hard to believe that the online auction first aired 6 years ago and although times were not the easiest, when we asked the Canford Community to donate auction lots, once again you delivered! We were incredibly grateful for your generosity and enthusiasm.
As with previous years, the auction included some prizes which would also support the Friends of Canford local community projects, as well as the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries. Everyone involved came together to procure some excellent lots.
We are once again very grateful to some of our donors who offer an auction prize on a regular basis. Special thanks this year goes also goes to PKF Francis Clark our sponsor for the past five years.
The total amount raised this year was £12,971.
ART AND DESIGN DONATION
We were incredibly fortunate to receive a very generous donation from a Canford parent which has allowed us to update and introduce new equipment to our Art and Design departments including:
• Stacked Combination Rolling Mill
• Epson Sure Colour Printer
• Spot Welder
• Bernina Sewing Machines
• Selection of DSLR Cameras and Lenses
• Expanded 3D Printing Facilities
• 3D Laser Scanner
• Plasma Cutter
• Product inspiration/Design history examples
• CNC Router Table
• Vertical Belt Sander
• General tooling update
• Artist in Residence and visiting speaker programme
This has made a tremendous difference to both departments and is enabling our pupils to develop their work further.
DR MICHAEL TOOSEY AWARDS
Dr Michael Toosey was a charismatic man who had very fond memories of his time at Canford. He was most generous in donating a significant sum of money in 2017 to enable Canfordians in receipt of a bursary to access all that Canford has to offer by providing additional financial assistance for activities that might be financially unobtainable.
Thanks to his donation, we have supported pupils in receipt of a bursary this year with a number of initiatives including specific assessments including UCAT, Duo interviews and training, and subsidised Summer Ball tickets.
Our gratitude continues and Dr Toosey’s legacy lives on.
Dr Michael Toosey W44, May 1927 - July 2018
Canford Telethon 2023
As part of our bi-annual programme calling alumni our 2023 Telethon will take place from 29th August to 12th September. Would you like to get involved? We will be recruiting recent OCs who are paid for their time and work remotely. OC callers really enjoy the opportunity to chat with alumni and parents and also develop new transferable skills for their CVs.
“Such an incredible opportunity. The skills I developed are so transferable and will help later on in my career.”

EDI – THANK YOU DONALD GEIKIE
that this project will enable us to become a school that is truly innovative in its approach towards promoting gender equality.
The EDI committee at Canford School is indebted to Donald Geikie C67 for his generous donation. The funding has enabled us to further our development of EDI issues.
Following his award, we have been able to commission speakers to come to the school to speak on a range of EDI topics such as race, gender, and neurodiversity. Many of these speakers supported our Festival of Ideas and Black History Month programmes. Some have been commissioned to speak to our pupil led support groups: the Rainbow Alliance, Open Minded, BBMC and Challenge Sexism groups. We have also used the funds to sign up to work with Bold Voices, an independent organisation that seeks to educate to end gender inequality and gendered violence. Through the programme we have six ambassadors who are completing online training to help support them in a research-based action development project. We hope

Reunite AND REMINISCE
It has been real delight to have a full calendar of events this year…
STAY IN TOUCH!

CONNECT GIVE BACK DEVELOP NEWS
Canford Global Connect is an online platform for Old Canfordians and parents. It allows you to find, re-connect and reminisce with fellow OCs as well as enabling you to utilise the trusted Canford environment to expand your professional network.
The platform serves as an effective communication tool for Canford news and events. If you are considering changing your career path and need advice, looking for a new job or seeking to recruit someone for your organisation, this network is invaluable. You can also share your news, advertise your business and share job opportunities to our community.
For this platform to become increasingly effective we need as many OCs to join as possible. You can edit your profile as with other social media sites and offer (or not) what works best for you.
Many schools and universities use this platform and we very much hope that you will join and make use of the valuable contacts available to you throughout the Canford Community.
Parents and former parents are welcome to join. You are a vital part of the Canford Community and you bring a wide range of experience and valuable qualities that you may be willing to offer to others. Plus it’s a fantastic networking tool too. Thank you to all the OCs and parents who have already offered CV advice, work experience and mentoring to others, it is greatly appreciated.

FRIENDS OF CANFORD
The Old Canfordian Society has had a quiet year but was delighted to see the return of the annual OC London Drinks Party in May. We were most grateful to Rowena and Rachael, not only for hosting the evening but also for securing a new (and better, in my opinion) venue at the last minute when they found the original one had double booked.
We gathered at the riverside restaurant, Le Pont de la Tour, with stunning views of Tower Bridge on a perfect May evening. There were OCs of all ages, some alone, some with their partners, others with groups of friends who have kept in touch over the years since leaving Canford. We were joined by Phil Effick and David Neill who brought some Sixth Formers along to tell us about Canford life today. It was rewarding to hear Canfordians young and old sharing their career experiences and aspirations and chatting about their common sporting interests.
We are looking forward to more opportunities for OCs to meet with each other during the Centenary celebrations.
The Friends of Canford School committee has been as active as ever. The new calendar year commenced with a donation appeal in support of a local food bank, followed by a Fashion Show in aid of the Wardrobe Foundation, a social enterprise run by an OC Eloise Grant W15, which was a most ambitious event and a huge success. Spring sprang with the ever-popular Spring Lunch in April, a super event and first opportunity to genuinely enjoy time together. May saw us support the school’s Rainbow Run, the proceeds of which were split between the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries and The Bourne Academy. In June, the Arboretum Tour took place, always a reminder of just how lucky we are to be able to enjoy the school and all it has to offer. Parent coffee mornings took place throughout the year, introducing new parents to the Friends of Canford committee.
Several very worthwhile community grants were awarded: funds for Dementia support Jolly Days at the East Dorset Museum, supply of a poly tunnel for Wimborne’s new Community Garden, and continued support for City Reach, to name just a few. The Friends of Canford Quiz Night attracted over 100 participants where Mr Vessey became Quiz Master for the night, and we ended the year on a traditional note with a festive Noel, Noel courtesy of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir. We extend our sincere thanks to the Canford Development team and wider Canford staff, all of whom have been incredibly supportive; to Mr Vessey for his unwavering encouragement, to our fantastic Friends committee for all they do and lastly, but of most importance, to the pupil parents and guardians, without which none of this would be the success it is.

It’s great to be back! The words of many as we get back to doing what we do best - helping to provide a memorable and entertaining experience for the Friends of Canford Music. The 2022 Easter Term took flight with soprano Julia Doyle and then the magical Britten Sinfonia. Both took pupil ensemble workshops during their visits to inspire and help musicians to get the best opportunity they could during their time. Britten Sinfonia performed the A Level composition entries and then gave a stunning concert to the audience in the evening. The finale to the term was the Friends of Canford Music Jazz Concert - and what a concert that was! The FCM bar was flowing, the concert hall buzzing and the musicians were outstanding!.
Much of the Summer Term was alive with music making, producing a rousing selection of music from the choirs, orchestras and bands resulting in the Canford Summer Concert. The Friends of Canford Music supported the event and provided an outdoor bar experience and help showing parents to their seats. The concert showed the culmination of a year of musical work by everyone involved with stunning solo performances.
Canford was back to business in the Christmas Term with a plethora of high quality musical performances from all of the ensembles, including a number of year group tea time concerts and the Christmas term concert in November. The FCM once more supported this event with a warm welcome and drinks for parents and friends.
Throughout the year, Friends of Canford Music, who are predominantly composed of parents, have continued meeting and supporting the Music department and are always on hand should they be needed for the main concert events. FCM’s mantra of supporting the music department and warmly welcoming the parents to events, often with a beverage and programme - so please do come along and enjoy the very talented music that Canford has to offer.
Martin Hancock, Chair of Friends of Canford MusicPerhaps you have a good-quality but unused instrument that you would like to donate - helping more young people to make even more music?

As the Regattas, Heads and friendlies got back under way so the FOCR could be found once again on the towpaths spurring on the squads and setting up the camp to provide morale-boosting sustenance in car parks, fields and Putney alleys!
A newly established WhatsApp group helped coordinate and bolster support for events including National Schools, Heads, Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. However the most competitive were the Easter and Christmas races and House Regatta, the highlight of which was the Staff v Pupils 8 – despite the Staff hearing the starting gun 5 seconds before it went off – sage experience lost to youthful exuberance. That evening’s Boat House dinner had the biggest turn out ever to listen to Heather Stanning OBE (whose father Timothy B61 is an OC) talk about her experience both as an Army Officer and as part of the GB rowing team, and whilst doing so casually passed around her 2 Olympic gold medals by way of inspiration. As the rowing season paused we passed on the baton to Nicola and Jonathan Stuart who have thrown themselves into supporting the Boat Club.
So a final ‘call to arms’ to join FCR and support the Boat House and its coaching team – they love doing what they do and the effect it can have when a child with no sport, suddenly finds a passion for the river. The days can be long, cold and wet, but as we like to say, ‘real athletes row, others just play games’.
Chris and Vics Borneman, Friends of Canford RowingWe do hope you will join us on 27th June 2023 at Henley Royal Regatta
Many Old Canfordians, parents, grandparents, friends and staff give up their own time to volunteer in many ways to support the Canford Community by helping out at events, attending the Careers Convention, helping with school trips, talking to pupils, mentoring Canfordians and OCs, being a Governor to mention just a few. Without your help, so much of what we can offer just wouldn’t be possible.
CAREERS CONVENTION 2022
After a successful online event in 2021, we were delighted to once again invite Old Canfordians and parents back to Canford to meet and talk with our Lower Sixth pupils face to face at the 2022 Careers Convention.
Canfordians were briefed in advance about what to expect from the day and how to prepare. The day started with pupils and volunteers in a conference style setting with Canford parent Simon Phillips as our keynote speaker. As part of his presentation, he encouraged pupils to understand their own personal skills, follow their passions and understand that decisions they make in the next few years are not for life. Career paths will change and morph over time. Simon encouraged recent OCs to share their experiences in the world of work since leaving Canford and university. It was fantastic to see OCs represented who left as early as 2019 volunteer.
Volunteers formed two sessions of industry panels in the afternoon where more detailed questions could be asked and explored. As has become customary, the day concluded with a ‘speed-dating’ style networking session which also involved some volunteers joining us online and allowed Canfordians to talk one-to-one.
OCs and parents joined us for a well earned drink at the end of the day in the Rathbone Room.
VOLUNTEERS 2022
Thank you to the following people who donated time and expertise to Canford in 2022. We have tried to include as many people as we know about, but we apologise for any omissions or errors. Please do let us know if we have got it wrong!
