DIRECTOR POLICYWEDNESDAY
9:00 AM | CREATE A CULTURE OF BELONGING— STRATEGIC DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION (DEI) PRINCIPLES THAT MAXIMIZE PEOPLE, PROFITS & PRODUCTIVITY
A Culture Of Belonging™ is a strategic DEI initiative that maximizes people, profits, and productivity. On an organizational level, we tend to think DEI conversations will lead to disruption or difficulty.
THE TRUTH IS: when DEI is seen as a strategic initiative, it strengthens the foundation of your culture—YOUR PEOPLE. THIS RESULTS IN: diverse teams who are motivated and productive because they feel seen, heard, and valued. This is how you create A Culture Of Belonging™
SPEAKER, DIVERSITY EXPERT, INCLUSION EQUITY COACH, AUTHOR, CULTURE OF BELONGING™

GENERAL SESSIONS
TUESDAY, MAY 16 | 1:00-2:15 PM
BELTSS: HOT TOPICS
Hear directly from the Board of Executives for Long Term Services and Supports (BELTSS) regarding the frequent questions their office answers on the LALD license, mentoring, and LALDIR permit. Discuss what being a license holder truly means—including the responsibilities and ramifications. Shared directorships can be confusing and we need to know more—and now we will. Bring some questions and hopefully we can get to those as well.
Steve Jobe, DC, MBA, LNHA, LALD, Executive Director, Board of Executives for Long Term Services and Supports (BELTSS)
Rebecca Bollig, LHSE, Director of Assisted Living & Education, Board of Executives for Long Term Services and Supports (BELTSS)
WEDNESDAY, MAY 17 | 1:00-2:15 PM
SENIOR BULLYING: PANEL DISCUSSION OF ISSUES, CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
We’ve all seen it and unfortunately we are also seeing an increase. Bullying. This session is a panel discussion filled with LTC experts, including an ombudsman, an attorney, a RN/LALD, and a 35-year provider veteran with experience in behavioral health. Discussion will focus on what we see, perspectives of our experts regarding those scenarios, and proactive actions we can be taking to see decreases. Please bring some questions and perhaps we can get to those also. It’s a cannot-miss session!

LEARNING TRACK ONE | 10:30-11:45 AM
1-A: RECRUITING & RETAINING A DIVERSE WORKFORCE
The need to connect with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) communities is important—now more than ever. According to the Minnesota State Demographic Center, between 2018 and 2053, the White, non-Hispanic/Latino population is expected to decrease from 84.1% to 69.2%, while other groups expect significant increases. This means the talent pool for employers will reflect that of its society becoming more diverse. It is beneficial that employers connect and develop relationships with BIPOC talent for increasing their workforce. The Department of Employment & Economic Development’s (DEED) workforce strategy consultant for the metro area will discuss recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce. Topics of discussion during this presentation will include effective engagement, the importance of engaging with a diverse workforce, DEI, and where to start for employers. Adesewa Adesiji, Workforce Strategy Consultant-Metro Area, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED)
1-B: LEADERSHIP–WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE LEAD THE PEOPLE & NOT THE WORK?
Are our mission, vision, and values—along with the promises we make to our residents and families—aligned with how we support our staff and teams? Is it comparable or compatible? Our systems will get what they need whether we like it or not. Our current workforce crisis is an example of our systems getting what they need by violence. We are good at adjusting our systems to build better capacity to meet the needs of today. New policies or procedures to ease the disruption to the systems. We are failing to realize that it’s not our operating systems that are broken. However, our “human operating system” is untethered and falling apart. What our entire staff have been through in the last three years has taken an unprecedented toll on our mental and emotional well-being. We are not the same people we were then. Learn to focus and build our human capacity by leading and supporting in a way that supports the human experience. Human experience includes uncertainty, change, anxiety, frustration, anger, fear, grief, loss, moral distress, compassion fatigue, and the list goes on. Hard things. It has been nothing but hard things— and continues to be. Learn and understand tools and skills to navigate the hard human things for yourself and your staff in a more sustainable way.
Krisie Baron, LSW, Human & Care Partner Specialist, Embracing Journeys
1-C: SELLING & MARKETING ASSISTED LIVING
Build it and they will come? Not quite. Marketing and selling your assisted living services does not happen by itself, overnight, or by magic wand. Several pieces are involved. Websites, brochures, referral sources, telephone etiquette, and contacts are just a few things you will need to get the most out of your time spent. Learn how to adjust your perspective and toot your own horn and the right people then will have the right information at the right time to get your census up. Join us to learn how.

LEARNING TRACK TWO | 2:45-4:00 PM
2-A: ASSISTED LIVING CONTRACT TERMINATIONS–SCENARIO EXAMPLES & OVERCOMING HURDLES
Attorneys Rebecca Coffin and Ryan Usher will provide an overview of the process for terminating a resident’s assisted living contract. They will discuss the statutory requirements and common mistakes made by providers. This session will mainly focus on case scenarios including when no one shows up to the pretermination meeting, when a resident refuses to be assessed for a new discharge location, and examples of working with the resident and advocates/case manager to find a location to best meet the resident’s needs. Examples will be provided on how facilities have worked with residents to accommodate needs and avoid termination appeal hearings.
Rebecca Coffin, Esq, Attorney/Partner, Voigt, Rodè, Boxeth & Coffin Ryan Usher, Attorney, Voigt, Rodè, Boxeth & Coffin
2-B: DEMENTIA—ISN’T THERE A PILL FOR THIS?
Dementia is challenging, full of conflict, grief, loss, sadness, frustration, and debilitating to relationships! Who wouldn’t want a pill for that? After so many years of research, what do we actually know about how we can improve peoples quality of life, slow the progression and reduce the reactions, anxiety and frustration for everyone on the journey, including our staff?
Krisie Baron, LSW, Human & Care Partner Specialist, Embracing Journeys
2-C: CLARITY, EMPATHY & RESPECT: THREE FOUNDATIONS FOR EFFECTIVE TEAMWORK ON DIVERSE TEAMS
This session will consider how diverse teams can be more effective, inclusive, and rewarding for team members by building shared norms that reflect the individual identities and experiences of team members. The same capacities that enable that—clarity and empathy—can also be extended to residents and families to drive exceptional service and enhance quality of life for everyone involved. Participants should come ready to reflect, share, and learn together.

3-B: WORKFORCE STRATEGIES FOR ENGAGING YOUTH INTO THE LTC PROFESSION
Workforce is a challenge that exists in all our locations. We cannot keep doing the same things and expecting different results. So, how can we, as providers, get youth excited about LTC career pathways? What tactical strategies can be used today? What we, as employers, can do is to support youth programs like: HOSA, scrubs camp, high school training programs, CTE, mentoring, tours, etc. Connections with youth is one of our largest areas of opportunity for workforce development, and it appears that this will be the case for the foreseeable future. How can we seize this opportunity? This panel will discuss these topics and more.

In this session, attorney Robert Rodè will discuss the recently and rapidly changing regulatory and legal landscape assisted living providers face in working with their residents wanting to use various cannabis products such as THC, CBD, and hempbased THC. You will learn legal strategies and best practices to avoid pitfalls along the way.
