Oneself as (An)other(s): pastiche of identity in composition Naphatrapee Suntorntirnan
Department of Live event creator and management. Albert Laurence School of Communication Arts, Assumption University
Background or significant of the project Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night or What You Will is one of the most renowned pieces for his comedy. The play recounts the reunion of twins’ characters; Sebastian and Viola as well as other perception and misunderstandings while also questioning how people identify themselves when faced with an identity crisis. In connection with the themes of deception, disguise, and performance that are the sources of comic counterparts of the play, Twelfth Night raises questions about the nature of gender and sexual identity. Last September, Dreambox Theatre, a professional Thai Theatre Company produces a new Thai-translated version from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night as Ra-tree-tii-sib-song or Awthii-sa-bai-chai (ราตรีทสี บิ สอง or เอาทีสบายใจ) with the professional cast. The creative project is aim at recreating visual edition of the cast in costumes, to reflect the aspects of multi-faceted and overlapped of identity of characters, through a set of collage work creation from the portrait photos of main cast from Dreambox Production, in characters’ costume and make up.
Project Objective 1. To apply the thematic ideas from the Shakespeare’s Classical play to re-create a conceptual (visual) artwork. 2. To create a collage art work to reflex incommensurability of selfhood and identity.
Concept Oneself as (An)other(s): pastiche of identity in composition is an attempt to demonstrate, through (and with) a visual artwork that reflex on some theoretical premises on identity. The concepts of pastiche is a type of (in)aesthetics in artistic creation that integrated to be in this project. More or less, it connects to the framework that’s adjacent to self-awareness, play with originality and essence. In social and philosophical theories, the conceptualization or the construction of identity is preceded dynamically along with the interconnectedness to others; in different persons, gender or social 3rd CA CREA TIVE WORK F ACULTY SHOWCASE 2017

status, perhaps by contact or relationships. And in those platforms of interrelationship, more or less, there would be some influences from (other) people that we have contacted, left upon and cause changes to the person that broadly defined as ‘us’. In other words, in post-structuralist’s language, oneself is a product of affective construction in relations the comparison with otherness. Therefore, to be applied with characterizations in a play, the identification of oneself is usually preceded in un-fulfillable dynamism. For statement of this dynamism, for me, it is quite identical to the collage picture in working. And it becomes more obvious, in a way, when it has been recreated and interplayed with the portraits of the characters (the cast) from the play that is playing on disguise and deception of identity. Their reflected appearance, to be relocated of body, facial components as well as costume equipment, becomes re-ordered. Identification of the cast and character is promisingly to be problematic and create more satiric or cynical entanglement with images of the characters.
Process of art or design works 1.1 Study about the play and the characters 1.2 Applied dramaturical research, compatible with the critical and artistic premises to explore the techniques of collage recreation. 1.3 Select the archival portrait pictures of the cast 1.4 Work on the plan for making collage picture according to sizes, types of shots, facial expressions etc,. 1.5 Create the collage works 1.6 Evaluation and Development
Material and techniques of art or design works The source of materials is the set of photo of the cast from last year production and the techniques is collage.

Knowledge after finished produce art or design works As transposing, visually, with the collage portrait creation, the thematic concept of the play which connected to the notion of identity is generated as pastiche. It is composed of imitations (both intentionally and unintentionally) from others in stylistics, manners and other attribution. The design works are created out to as more dynamism, with grotesqueness and ridicules that one might received as influences from others.
