While singing it, you will notice that sometimes one note corresponds to one syllable of the lyrics, but other times you will notice that one syllable will be prolonged over several notes. This is what we call SYLLABIC SINGING and MELISMATIC SINGING. It is called syllabic singing when each syllable has one note. It is called melismatic singing when each syllable has many notes.

* Chant for a solo voice (everyone sings the same melody): MONOPHONY. * Religious chant in Latin from the Roman Christian Church. * It can be melismatic: one syllable is sung with several different musical notes. * It can be syllabic: each syllable is sung with a single musical note. * It does not have an instrumental accompaniment. * It is normally sung by men. * All the men can sing at the same time, in a choir, or a soloist can respond to the choir. * The author is anonymous, though it has been said that Pope Saint Gregory was the one who composed those songs. This is where the name GREGORIAN CHANT came from. * It is also called PLAINCHANT.
