INTRODUCTION This project was really not was I was expecting to achieve. In the beggining I wasn’t really interested because I was working in a group and I was thinking that I couldn’t make my ideas came true, althought that happened I’ve learn that sometimes we aren’t always right and our mistakes can harm other peoples work’s and feelings. Also I’ve open my eyes to several world problems that I wasn’t aware of and I know that we the new generation of designers can help change some of that issues with our design skills and will power. PROJECT THEME

We where asked to create a blog that worked as a public and transparent mean to communicate how the team is developing over the course of the project. An Facebook group was also created to facilitate the communication between the group.

Each group randomly selected the theme they are were to explore for Project 02. My project theme is Transport that lead to Cyclism.

WORKSHOPS Each team member where asked to attend a series of expert-led sessions and to conduct an on-going analysis of their findings through the week. We split each other and in the end we ended up having essential research on: WATER | TRANSPORT | CONSUMPTION This helped us to not only have diverse research for our project but also to be aware of certain problems happening on today’s day. There were some projects I felt that were worth to be shared:

The Last Fisherman An Greenpeace documentary that focus on the problems of the small fishing boats against the big European boats and the future consequences.

Health Cost /Effectiveness Environment Community

A series of videos highlighting the key issues and giving possible solutions to the problems A campaign to promote awareness of the platform or hub, using both digital and non digital means. E.g.: Social Media and Posters

Leaflet with a list of shops that sell cheap but good bikes LCC Cycling club (or police) can come and give tips about cycling Have a buddy system and try to get as many people as we can to sign up An interactive map with the routes people travel on.

At this stage we were a little lost with all the information we got from the surveys and we were a little to ambitious with what we could present for green week. At this stage we got red for our project that mean that we would present it at green week We receive this feedback from the tutors:

You showed lots of text recounting your research regards why people do/ don’t cycle Presentation overly relied on words and telling rather than visuals and showing. Robin leaning against the wall, tapping the wall, playing with his pen and notebook which was very distracting the group didn’t seem very rehearsed or prepared. There was no real sense of design occurring at all what have you been doing? Poor evidence of commitment and collaboration. Talked about a digital platform but no evidence of real engagement -. this presentation was very dull as a result as was the application of design thinking and application. Suggest you try harder next time...

FINAL IDEA We diced to just focus in one idea: The Buddy Network Although only 4 persons mentioned in the survey this idea if well supported by experienced cyclists could help potential young cyclists to start cycling and lose their fears because someone with more experience in the field was helping them.

Aims To encourage potential cyclists to cycle to LCC providing them accompaniment from experienced students & staff cyclists. Helping expand the LCC Cycling Club community that connect cyclists together Create a sustainable campaign that will last throughout and after green week.

Platform Creation of a Website were students can be provided with information (Location, Personal Details) about potential experienced cyclists that they can contact and will help them.

We weren’t the pioneers of this type of idea that add made success within the cycling community and the media.

Project 02 Page 20

EXPERIMENTATION I was in charge of designing the website with my colleague Stuart. I’ve started with the idea of designing a website that could only be accessed by login and the user could have a custom profile in order to only be access by the UAL Students. I tried to develop the idea using Photoshop because I know its possible to design websites in Photoshop and then have someone that can code it to any web language. This idea was good but didn’t went according to our time and budget so I had to look for other possibilities.

-Distinction from most other websites; single page websites are less common, and can thus leave an impression on your site visitors. -Easy solution for simple “brochure” sites that serve one product or one purpose. -User experience can be improved because navigating through content is quicker and more responsive than having to go to a new web page.

Project 02 Page 21

One of the possibilities I’ve found was to use Adobe Muse. I’ve tried to make the website design very simple and clear to be understand (icons, single page) and at the same time be eye catching (yellow colour). The reasons I’ve choose to use a single page layout were:

Project 02 Page 22

COMMUNICATION A few reasons of choosing the design of my website was already refereed on the last page although I think I should add that the design was made thinking in the two types of audience so it would be suitable for both. In the moment of the choosing the website that we would use in the exhibition and Flyers one member of my group decided that he didn’t like the website I’ve designed and he decided to use his own design, I didn’t agreed on his decision and It wasn’t much I can do alone because the rest of my group saw him as the leader and his decisions were the “right ones”. click the images to access the websites

HIS DESIGN

Our presentation went very good, We used a map as a visualisation of how the map works online, and presented the chosen website in a computer which also enable students to sign up to the platform. I would say this worked very well, many people were interested. We were approached by the London Cycling Campaign who would like to advertise our platform, we were also approached by Common Place who would like to write about our Buddy network in their magazine. Furthermore a tutor who also owns Micycle a workshop which allows people to repair/wash their bikes and meet other cyclists who also provides schemes and information about cycling they all wanted to promote our idea as they thought it was a brilliant idea to encourage students to cycle in a safer and funnier way..

SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE In order to make the idea happen there were some subjects that required to be understand, researched and explored for specific purposes within the context of designer, client and audience. LCC Cycling Club (Client) This client was difficult to be contacted but their ideas and concepts made us believe in creating something can could help them and don’t let them die with the consonant renewal of students.

Google Maps We needed an online map that was capable to add pin points, routes and if was free it would be great. After a couple of research I found that Google Maps was almost perfect, first of all everybody know how to use it and it was possible to make custom maps with pin points and routes that could be private but the problem was when adding the cyclists routes we had to give access to cyclists so they can add their own routes and they could also edit others peoples routes so if some one deleted all the routes we had no chance to add them back. We ended up to find a way that cyclists send us their starting route and we could add them to the map one by one.

Project 02 Page 25

Flyers&Posters (Audiences) Although this were not my responsibility I realise how important is to have a good branding of the website in order to get the attention of our audiences. We had to have two types of flyers one for cyclists and one for non-cyclists. Posters to promote the website on the day of the exhibition that needed to be eye catching due to the quantity of different events happening. (Click here to see the flyers)

Adobe Muse Software enables designers to create HTML websites for desktop and mobile devices, without writing code. This program has been talked a lot in the last few month’s, some people are arguing that “Muse is proof Adobe has lost its way, doesn’t understand web design and web designers, and has created software that could damage the future of the web. ” I’ve found it very easy to use but still have some “bugs” that complicates the design process.
