VISUAL ARTS The Columbia Museum of Art is a cultural gem located on Main and Hampton Streets in downtown Columbia. The museum is a captivating architectural conversion, transformed from an urban department store into a sleek and airy, light-filled space with 25 galleries. The permanent collection includes world-class examples of the Italian Renaissance, Baroque Art, Impressionism, and Modern Art. The museum recently opened Modern & Contemporar y Art from the Collection which features over 30 paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures including works by Jasper Johns, Howard Thomas, Sally Mann and Edward Ruscha. This fall, the museum proudly presents Mark Rothko, The Decisive Decade 1940-1950: From September 14, 2012-January 6, 2013, you can view one of the 20th century’s most influential and worldrenowned artists, Mark Rothko. Classified as an abstract expressionist, he rejected such labels. The first significant exhibition of his works in the state, this showing features almost 40 increasingly surrealistic and abstract works. “Automatic drawing” (meant to represent the energy of things felt rather than the reality of things seen) and the influence of such writers and thinkers as Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche, and T. Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden For almost 30 years, Pearl Fryar has been rescuing “throwaway” plants from compost piles at local nurseries and transforming them into living sculpture. Now internationally recognized for its artistry and contribution, the garden boasts more than 300 plants complimented by “junk art” scattered throughout the garden. Mr. Fryar’s personal determination has inspired hundreds of thousands of visitors since he began planting. He said in 1993,“I like to let people see what they want to in my plants. The creativity comes in making a shape that speaks to me in one way but may say something else to everyone else.” The garden is open 10 AM-4 PM Tuesday-Saturday year-round. As one of the original 13 states, the South Carolina legislature has had a long and colorful history. Tour the current South Carolina State House where the legislature has met since 1903. Beautiful architecture, stained glass, wood carvings, an interior view of the dome, portrait paintings of historical ﬁgures, House and Senate chambers and the interesting story of the building itself are waiting to be discovered. Columbia’s oldest museum presents the state’s martial tradition from the Revolutionary War to today’s War on Terror. Haiti Children Project

Haiti Children Project In 2003, Wade McGuinn traveled to Jeremie, Haiti on a mission trip, and it was there he discovered his lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s calling. Since then, Wade has led many mission trips to Cuba, Honduras, Vietnam and Mexico. In 2005, while in Haiti, he was taken to the home of a local man, Jean Renal Alexander, who was caring for 8 abandoned children in his home while barely able to care for himself. When Wade returned home to Lexington, he and his wife Janet felt inspired to care for these children. A short time later they founded the

Haiti Children Project. Their first task was to plan a building to house orphaned children and provide the opportunity for a better future for them. In 2010, after 32 months of construction, dozens of teams, and donations too many to list, the new HCP orphanage was completed and the children moved in during a dedication ceremony. Today, resources can provide care for 39 children. But this 6,500 sq ft facility can house up to 100 kids! Additional financial help is needed to continue to feed and clothe the children and pay for elementary and secondary schooling, as there are no free public schools in Haiti, the poorest country

This time of year is all about hope, togetherness, and love. It's a good time to think about helping those less fortunate. The Midlands of South Carolina is the birthplace of phenomenal organizations that effect change for the good in the lives of many people, not only here at home, but in places across the hemisphere.

Home Works of America In the late 1980's, Hank Chardos of Irmo SC accompanied his oldest daughter on a summer mission trip sponsored by the Methodist Church called Salkehatchie. They repaired homes for a week in the Santee, SC, area. He returned from that experience with amazement at the exuberance and compassion the teens displayed working in the hot summer sun. Eventually, Hank founded an organization with the express purpose of enabling teens, with the assistance of adults, to repair homes of the elderly and the disadvantaged. Teens of all faiths are welcomed, with prayer as their binding force. Home Works does both oneday and week-long sessions and is established in SC, GA, NC, AL, LA and Peru. Through 2011, Home Works of America has repaired over 1600 homes with the help of almost 30,000 volunteers. October 20, 2012 - One Day Blitz Repairing 20 Homes!
