BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL INTRODUCTION The graphic identity manual for BIOPAMA is intended to give precise guidelines on how logo, colors and typography should be used in all informative and promotional communication materials to be developed in diverse countries where BIOPAMA is implemented. It is directed mainly to communications officers and technical field staff of the Program’s implementing institutions and partners as well as for graphic designers and publishers, who would have to follow the rules specified to ensure consistency on using the brand. This manual contains information on the use of the logo, design guidelines, the color palette, the font types to be used and other key resources. In addition, it includes templates in order to produce materials in-house, thus avoiding most of the time the need to hire external specialists. BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 1. LOGO 1.1. Composition The BIOPAMA logo has been designed with a special font based on Aller Bold, in three colors: blue, green and brown, and it is composed of two parts: Acronym and Isotype.

Different versions of the logo can be found in Annex 1.

1.2. Meaning In English the Acronym, BIOPAMA, means Biodiversity and Protected Area Management Programme. The isotype replaces the “O” of BIOPAMA; it represents planet Earth and the biodiversity of different regions of Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific, in which the Program works. The “O” also shows some iconic species of these regions. All these elements, even the icon of the human being, are in proportion and equal sizes, symbolizing how important each one of them is for achieving BIOPAMA’s objectives and a protected planet.

LOGO SIZE The stroke widths, the letter spacing, and the size relationships of the logotype components have been carefully developed, and they should not be altered or recreated. The size of the logo can vary as long as the proportion among the elements is maintained. It is recommended that you avoid reductions smaller than 1.2 cm in height, otherwise its legibility would be compromised. 10 cm 2 cm

2.2. Safety Area

2 units

To ensure visibility and provide adequate spacing between the logo and other design elements, a minimum spacing required around the logotype is the equivalent of half of the height of the letter “B� in BIOPAMA.

BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 3. LOGO COLORS In BIOPAMA graphic identity, the use of color is crucial. The full color logo should be used whenever possible. However the logo has been designed to be printed in three colors, it is flexible so it stands out just as effectively in black and white. Below are the official colors of the logo and their compositions in different color spectra:

BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 3.1. Logo in One Color Printing The use of a single color logo is suitable only when color printing is not possible.

BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 3.2. Logo on Color Backgrounds The BIOPAMA logo must be used in full color version in both light and dark backgrounds.

When it is a bright color background, the logo should be used with a white outline.

Although not recommended, when it is used a light blue background, such as the blue which is part of the BIOPAMA color palette, the logo should be used with brown letters.

BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 3.3. Logo on Photographs When used on photographs or textured or patterned backgrounds, the white outlined full color logo should be used to provide contrast.

HOWEVER, BACKGROUND IMAGES AND COLORS SHOULD BE AVOIDED IF THEY MAKE THE BIOPAMA LOGO DIFFICULT TO READ OR IF THEY ARE DISSONANT. SELECT PHOTOGRAPHS AND COLORED BACKGROUNDS THAT PROVIDE SUFFICIENT CONTRAST WITH THE COLORS OF THE LOGO TO PRESERVE ITS INTEGRITY.

BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 4. INCORRECT USE OF LOGO The guidelines below will help to use the logo effectively. Be sure to give the logo its own space and avoid grouping it too closely with other graphical elements.

BIOPAMA Logo with Partner Logos The BIOPAMA logo should not appear next or alongside logos of partner organizations (donors and implementers). In the various materials produced by BIOPAMA, the logo must be placed prominently if possible, in a preferential position and a larger size than these other logos (see templates). The specific rules for the use of each partner logo must always be considered. Partner logos and their rules can be found in the branding document, “Guidance Notes BIOPAMA Communications”. Implementing partners’ logos, IUCN, EC-JRC, the ABS Initiative, should appear in equal size and proportions. The recommended placement for these logos is the bottom or at the end of any communication material and should always be preceded by the text: “BIOPAMA is implemented by:”. As defined by their rules, the donor logos, ACP and EU, should appear prominently on all communications materials (see Publication cover). Underneath these logos there should always be the text: “An initiative of the ACP Secretariat, funded by the European Union“. Depending on the product, the logos of the implementing and donor partners can be used in the following ways:

5.2. BIOPAMA Logo with Other Logos When the BIOPAMA logo appears with logos of other organizations or programs, all logos should be approximately the same size and proportion. Be sure to follow the instructions on the minimum size and the safety area of the logo in this guide.

BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 6. TYPOGRAPHY 6.1. Main Typography The BIOPAMA main family font is Aller, selected for its simplicity and clarity. It is the main font for titles, subtitles and texts. Aller Bold is used in BIOPAMA logotype, and it is also used for stationery basic documents.

BIOPAMA - GRAPHIC IDENTITY MANUAL 7. PHOTOGRAPHS Generic pictures may be used to produce any BIOPAMA communications materials. The GPAP has a library of photos that you can use for this purpose or you may choose to use a photo from the field that shows local scenery, or a combination of both. If new images are selected, they must: • Have the greatest beauty possible. • Have a professional quality: High-resolution, properly sized, CMYK and pressready. • Represent BIOPAMA initiatives and themes. • BIOPAMA partners must have full, documented rights to use the image. • Be properly credited. Under the caption, place the word “Photo” followed by the photo author’s name (e.g. Sydney Harbor National Park. Photo: David Finnegan). If there is not an individual’s name, credit should be given to the organization or company that provided the photo.

8. PAPER Whenever possible, the recommended paper for any BIOPAMA communications material is a Forest Stewardship Council, FSC or SFI, Certified paper with the highest percentage of post-consumer fiber that can be obtained.

9. BIOPAMA GRAPHIC IDENTITY IMPLEMENTATION In order to create a cohesive look and feel for the BIOPAMA programme, and to support a unified communications effort, we have created a series of samples and templates. When using or replicating the templates, please follow these rules of thumb and use all important elements identified in this manual. You can choose different colors (from the official ones), graphics (see Annex 3) and photographs on each material to enhance these templates.

Stationary All stationary materials (letterhead, envelopes, business cards and folder) must respect the graphic identity of the Program and utilize the BIOPAMA logo. However, the contact information listed on each material should be adapted depending on the needs of each partner or who is producing these materials.

The templates have some fixed elements like the EU disclaimer, while others are intended to be changed, such as photos, texts, silhouettes and background colors. Feel free to use these resources to create the best possible communications materials. Brochure, Publication and Banner templates files are designed with Adobe InDesign CS5.5 and presented in Indesign Markup format (.IDML) so you can recover these files in any In Design version, older or newer. The Internal Report is a Word document and the Power Point file is a PPT one.
