Literature at Lunchtime with Dr Jane Mackay Jean Rhys’ ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ Thursday 2 September 12 noon Jean Rhys’ ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ is a postcolonial novel which tells the story of the first Mrs Rochester – or the ‘mad woman in the attic’ - in Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’ but it’s also so much more than merely an extension of Bronte’s classic. Using her own Creole background, Rhys explores the full range of the psychology of a woman misunderstood by her aristocratic English husband and in doing so, opens us to a world of sexual and cultural misunderstandings. This is one of the 20th Century’s truly great novels.

UGLY
Wednesday 29 September 7.30pm
Red Ladder Theatre Company Thursday 30 September 7.30pm 15yrs & over
Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to pay homage to the men that kick-started the British rock and blues scene. For many fans, Chris Farlowe is considered the consummate rocker - the living embodiment of a star who’s seen it all and done most of it but remains as fresh and enthusiastic as when he started out 50 years ago. With hits such as ‘Handbags and Gladrags’, covered in 2003 by the Stereophonics, Farlowe’s live act is honed to perfection and backed by the Norman Beaker Band widely considered to be one of the UK’s most original blues bands.
Set in the not too distant future where climate change has reached the point of no return, UGLY is a bold, darkly funny, futuristic satire. Mrs Mason, a disgraced home economics teacher has been exiled to the Ghetto-Zone for those ‘Not Special’ convinced that the Ministry for Mistakes will let her return home. However when it falls to her to save two former students - can she save them without destroying herself? It’s going to get funny - very funny - but it’s also going to get very, very, UGLY…

Literature at Lunchtime with Dr Jane Mackay Virginia Woolf ‘To the Lighthouse’ Thursday 7 October 12 noon ‘To the Lighthouse’ is a landmark novel of high modernism, focusing on the Ramsay family and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920. Inspired by Woolf’s own childhood summers spent in Cornwall, come and enjoy this wonderful novel about a family holiday, about grief and loss and the nature of memory in which she rejects absolutely the values with which she grew up. The Perfect Wife Plested and Brown Wednesday 13 October 7.30pm
Stalin Ate My Homework Alexei Sayle Friday 8 October 7.30pm Alexei Sayle gives an entertaining and exclusive glimpse into his brand new memoir ‘Stalin Ate My Homework’, with stories and readings from the book and an opportunity to ask questions. Enjoy an entertaining evening with presenter and writer Peter Snow discussing the highlights of the Duke of Wellington’s battle with Napoleonic France. Most famously known for his highly visual reporting on ‘Newsnight’ using the ‘swingometer’ during elections, Peter Snow can bring to life the driest of topics. Now, following the success of his books and TV series ‘Battlefield Britain and 20th Century Battles’, Peter uses eyewitness accounts, letters and memoirs of soldiers who fought with Wellington to bring alive the horrors, the courage, the ambitions and the jealousies fighting the Napoleonic dictatorship.

On the morning John Christow and his downtrodden wife, Gerda, are due to travel to Sir Henry and the eccentric Lady Angkatell’s house for a weekend party, John allows his daughter to tell his fortune with cards. When the death card is drawn, he pays no attention. However, the appearance of an old flame, Veronica Clay, at the Angkatell’s party at ‘The Hollow’ seems to be the final link in a chain of what proves to be fatal circumstances. A fine example of ‘a country house mystery’, this is one of Agatha Christie’s more complex examples of characterization.

My Name is Khan
Theatre Tours International Wednesday 17 November 7.30pm
(2010) 12A Thursday 18 November – 7.30pm
Gary Shelford’s magnificent solo performance of Orwell’s classic satire has to be seen to be believed! Using nothing but a wooden box, some amazing sound effects and brilliant physical and vocal dexterity, Shelford ignites this famous yarn bringing a modern sinister relevance to Orwell’s masterwork. Hilariously comic and powerfully poignant by turns, Shelford’s breathtaking storytelling creates the farmyard around you in 110 minutes of utterly compelling theatre. This is a must see performance for all ages.

Lysistrata leads the women of Greece in a revolt against the male establishment, calling on them to ban sex in order to stop a bloody conflict in this bold, visual, no-nonsense approach to the contemporary staging of a classical text. Chaos ensues as the conventions of Ancient Greek society are turned on their head and sexual tension builds to bursting point in this bawdy, provocative & delightfully absurd comedy. With a reputation for making Greek drama seriously sexy, AOD use a highly physical style and a team of skilled collaborators known for their circus & comedy experience to catapult this play into the 21st Century. Abraham Lincoln thought that this book, essentially an anti-slavery novel, started the American Civil War. Focusing on the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, it was the first American novel to become a best seller. However, from being celebrated for its defence of human rights, it has since become hugely controversial with the name ‘Uncle Tom’ becoming a derogatory term for those championing African American writing. Let’s see what we think!
