The Rape of Lucrece British Shakespeare Company Friday 5 February 7.30pm

Karen Blixen’s ‘Out of Africa’

‘Lucrece’ quoth he ‘this night I must enjoy thee.

Literature at Lunchtime with Dr. Jane Mackay Thursday 4 February 12 noon

William Shakespeare

If thou deny then force must work my way: For in thy bed I purpose to destroy thee...’

‘Out of Africa’ is Blixen’s poignant account of running a coffee farm in Kenya during the period of the 1st World War. More of a description than a novel, it recounts the friendships she had with the people working the land and her love for the adventurer from Rutland, Denys FinchHatton. Blixen was finally forced to return to her native Denmark for treatment for syphilis but her time in Africa remained the happiest of her life. Come and enjoy her passionate tribute to a lost time. £5.00 / £4.50 concessions

Adapted from Shakespeare’s gripping poem and faultlessly performed in his inimitable style by Gerard Logan, the story is simple yet compelling. Tarquin casts his eye on his friend Collatine’s wife, Lucretia, and while Collatine is away, Tarquin plans his attack. He enters Lucretia bedroom, rapes her then flees, overcome with remorse. Lucretia tries to come to terms with what has happened and waits for her husband to return… If you love poetry, Shakespeare, or just a good story brilliantly told, don’t miss this show. You will rarely have the chance to experience great poetry brought to life this well. £9.00 / £7.50 concessions

One Man Lord of the Rings Tuesday 9 February 7.30pm In approximately 60 minutes, Canadian actor Charles Ross - creator of the hugely successful One-Man Star Wars Trilogy - whips through ‘The Fellowship Of The Ring’, ‘The Two Towers’ and ‘The Return Of The King’ in ‘One Man Lord of Rings’. Where Peter Jackson spent hundreds of millions of dollars, around ten hours of film and enough special effects to keep an army of computer whiz-kids busy for a very long time, Ross recreates Tolkien’s Middleearth armed with nothing more than a pair of elbow pads, his outrageous imagination and 3,600 seconds of unbelievable kinetic entertainment. If you’ve seen the films, read the books and named your first-born Frodo - you’ll love this show - and if you’ve managed to escape Tolkien-mania, it’s a brilliant bite-sized take on a classic epic. £12.00 / £10.00 concessions

Lunchtime John Fowles’s ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ Literature at Lunchtime with Dr. Jane Mackay Thursday 4 March 12 noon Jamie Marcus Productions Friday 26 February 7.30pm Following the sell-out success of their Spring 2009 tour of Bouncers, Jamie Marcus Productions returns to the Guildhall with an electrifying production of Stephen King’s ‘Misery’, adapted for the stage by Simon Moore. Paul Sheldon, best-selling author of the ‘Misery Chastaine’ novels, is crippled in a car crash only to be rescued by Annie Wilkes, his ‘number one fan’. Far from being an angel of mercy, when she discovers that his eponymous heroine dies in the latest book, Annie imprisons Sheldon insisting that he write another. Fearing for his life, Paul writes a chapter per day as he descends into a living hell beyond anything that he could ever imagine for Misery. £9.00 / £7.50 concessions / £5.00 students Page 10

Set in Fowles’ home town of Lyme Regis, this is the novel that finally established him as the leading British writer of his generation. This is a truly post modern work set in Victorian England and one which you are invited to choose your own ending for... or are you?

Three legends of British Jazz performing in one great concert

The Three Bs Friday 5 March - 7.30pm

Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen For more than 40 years, Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen have flown the flag for traditional jazz all over the world and their sound is as fresh and popular today as when they had their first hit with ‘Samantha’ in 1960. They produced hit after hit until the final tally was fourteen UK Top 30 records.

The Big Chris Barber Band Chris Barber celebrates his 61st year as a band leader in 2010. With his 11-piece band, featuring a 7-strong front line, Chris plays a selection of his favourite music: from his roots in New Orleans style in ‘Bourbon Street Parade’ (still his signature tune) to the early music of Duke Ellington and Sidney Bechet, Bob Crosby, blues by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee ... and probably back to ‘When the Saints’!

£22.00 / £20.00 concessions

Acker Bilk & His Paramount Jazz Band

Acker Bilk first gained worldwide fame with hit single ‘Stranger On The Shore’ in 1962 - it stayed in the charts for 55 weeks and was the first number 1 hit in the UK and USA simultaneously. Since that time, Acker and his Paramount Jazz Band have firmly established themselves as one of the most successful (and best loved) British jazz bands of all time. Acker has received an MBE for his services to the music industry and was awarded at the BBC Jazz Awards for his unique contribution to jazz in the UK. This is a fantastic evening of entertainment with three legends of British Jazz– not to be missed! £22.00 / £20.00

The Killing of Sister George

Moon Fool Moon Fool with Trestle Theatre Company Wednesday 17 March 7.30pm Age 13 years and over

St Peter’s Hill Players Wednesday 10 to Saturday 13 March 7.30pm Sister George is a beloved character in the popular 60s radio series Applehurst, a nurse who ministers to the medical needs and personal problems of the local villagers. However, in real life, she is played by gin-guzzling, sadistic June Buckridge - the absolute opposite of the sweet character she plays. June lives with Alice ‘Childie’ McNaught - a younger dim-witted woman she enjoys bullying – and when she discovers her character is scheduled to be killed off, becomes increasingly impossible to work and live with. Mercy Croft, an executive at the radio station, intercedes in June’s professional and personal lives supposedly to help, but actually has an agenda of her own... Written by Frank Marcus in 1964 as a parody of the killing of Grace Archer in ‘The Archers’, The Killing of Sister George is a black comedy with a twist – it pokes fun at the nation’s obsession with soap operas while highlighting the fascinating, and sometimes disturbing, nature of adult relationships

Deep in the heart of the forest, a King and a Queen fall in and out of love and a Fool tries to puckishly lead them astray. Together they create a heady confusion that changes the course of one hot summer’s night. In this brand new show created by emerging company Moon Fool and produced by Trestle, three performers transform into different characters from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Combining Balkan folk with circus jazz and playful acrobatic movement with original text, this is an emotive and inventive re-imagining of Shakespeare’s well-loved play. Moon Fool is supported by South Hill Park. £9.00 / £7.50 concessions

Orpheus in the Underworld The Grantham Singers Friday 19 & Saturday 20 March 7.30pm The Grantham Singers’ present a concert version of Jacques Offenbach’s outrageously funny ‘send-up’ of Greek mythology in ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’. The story centre’s on the legend of Orpheus’ in pursuit of his wife Eurydice who is carried off to Hades by Pluto - much to the annoyance of the King of the Gods, Jupiter. This highly disrespectful romp involves nymphs, shepherds, gods and goddesses, reaching its climax in the riotous revels of the celebrated Can-Can. This is a lively and hugely enjoyable show for both performers and audience alike and, with many well known tunes, is an evening not to be missed. £7.50

Wednesday 24 March 7.30pm

The ever innovative Hazel O‘Connor teams up with legendary saxophonist Claire Hirst and pianist Sarah Fisher in this evening of jazz classics. After striding into the spotlight with cult anti-establishment film ‘Breaking Glass’, Hazel became an iconic figure as the first woman to write and perform a soundtrack containing top ten hits ‘Eighth Day’ and ‘Will You’. In this fantastic collaboration, Hazel’s sultry voice is well served by soaring sax solos from Clare Hirst - best known for her work with the Communards, David Bowie and the Bellestars - and pianist/vocalist Sarah Fisher of Eurythmics and Sax In The City fame. The show features re-interpreted standards such as ‘Summertime’, ‘Stormy Weather’ and ‘God Bless The Child’ as well as a new take on some of Hazel’s own tunes including ‘Will You’, ‘Decadent Days’, ‘Driftwood’ and ‘Blackman’. £14.00 / £12.00 concessions

Lunchtime Truman Capote’s ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ Literature at Lunchtime with Dr Jane Mackay Thursday 1 April 12 noon Known to most of us as the successful film version, come and hear what this novel is really about. Capote was angered by the sanitisation in the film of this rich and cruel novel as - despite its 1940s New York gloss – it’s more a Henry James-style tragedy with a glamorous veneer. Meet the real Holly Golightly who was, like Capote, a ‘hick’ from Alabama, trying to survive in a big bad world. Stay for the 2.00pm showing of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ starring Audrey Hepburn and pay just £1.50 for the film ticket! £5.00 / £4.50 concessions

Despondent and disappointed, Strephon calls for the support of the fairies which results in the Fairy Queen pronouncing a magical sentence on Parliament giving Strephon the power to pass any bill he chooses. Boogie Pete Live Saturday 17 April 2.00pm Ages 3 years and over

The Caretaker London Classic Theatre Thursday 22 April 7.30pm Davies, an elderly drifter, is given shelter by the kindly but vulnerable Aston and quickly makes himself at home in the squalid, junk-filled attic.

However, the uneasy peace between them is fractured by the arrival of Mick - Aston’s quickwitted, streetwise younger brother. As the shadows lengthen and the three men reveal more about the past and themselves, a battle of wits begins that has irrevocable consequences for them all. Fifty years on after it was first performed at The Arts Theatre, London in 1960, Harold Pinter’s compelling study of loneliness and power games still has the capacity to amuse, shock and fascinate.
