Dear Patriot Nation, Welcome to our Spring 2020 Talon Magazine. It is a great time to be a Patriot! Along with the unparalleled success of our students and teachers, Carrollwood Day School is exceptionally proud to have earned membership in the Cum Laude Society. This is an extremely prestigious accolade and validates that our school not only honors superior scholastic achievement, but achieves it. As you peruse the pages of the Talon, you will see that excellence at our school comes in many forms. From the seniors who are heading off to amazing colleges, to the innovative faculty and students who helped make CDS an entrepreneurial school, to the athletes who balance academics and commitment every day, to the faculty and leadership who strive for continuous improvement, to learn more, and grow. The bar is forever being raised here at CDS. We are never finished learning. We never stop growing. As a school, as students, as educators, and as leaders. Teachers are fueled by students’ thirst for knowledge and students are inspired by passionate teachers, engaging speakers, and their fellow students. With excitement and anticipation for the future of CDS, we are "Realizing the Vision" of our Dream. Believe. Achieve. Capital Campaign. The ambitious renovation/ expansion project is moving full steam ahead and the dream of collaborative spaces, innovative design, and a student union will be coming to fruition. With construction scheduled to start in 2020, CDS will continue to evolve to exceed the needs of our amazing community and allow us to remain the leading preschool - 12th grade independent school in Tampa.

PATRIOT NATION

Raising the Bar

CDS recently earned membership in the prestigious Cum Laude Society. CDS is 1 of 5 secondary schools in Florida and 1 of 15 secondary schools in the United States to be both an IB and Cum Laude Society school.

"I could not have been as successful as I have been in my studies without the constant support and caring from the CDS faculty." Akeheta K., Dartmouth "IB helped teach me multiperspectivity and writing skills." Reece K., University of Virginia "Early and consistently the college counseling department helped me gain perspective about the process and really assisted me every step of the way in this journey." Frank V. Cornell

Enjoy this issue of The Talon and thank you for being a part of the Patriot Nation. Best regards,

Ryan Kelly, Ed.D. Head of School 4

A DAY AT THE ECC

WHAT WILL WE LEARN TODAY

Life at the Early Childhood Campus is a constant conversation of why. Whether exploring and discovering signs and symbols in the world around us or learning to understand the value of speaking and listening, our early childhood program is all about asking big questions and nurturing curiosity. Kindergarten has been busy tending to their garden while learning about the life cycles of plants and butterflies. The big room has been transformed into a post office for social and fine motor skills play for all ages.

“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world. - Howard Zinn Community is a theme that is integrated into all we do at CDS. This year our Kindergarten students partnered with We Help Two, a sock company that is trying to make a difference both globally and locally. Students sold packs of fun, funky socks to families and staff at CDS. For every 100 packs sold, We Help Two would be able to help a baby through the 4-year process to correct their club foot. CDS Kindergarteners sold 229 pairs of socks!

FOSTERING AMBITION TOMORROW'S BUSINESS LEADERS This semester, upper school entrepreneurship students participated in a prestigious business plan competition open to 13-18 year old students around the world...The Conrad Challenge... www.conradchallenge.org/conrad-challenge The Conrad Challenge invites student teams from around the world to apply science, technology, entrepreneurship and innovation solutions to real-world problems in the categories of Aerospace & Aviation, Cyber-Technology & Security, Energy & Environment, Health & Nutrition, Transforming Education Through Technology, Smoke-Free World: Eliminating & Reducing Teen Vaping, and Smoke-Free World: Re-Purposed Farmlands & Tobacco Crops. CDS had one team who completed the requirements for Round 2, and have been named Conrad Innovators. Rohan K. and Laney H., class of 2022, competed under the category of The Foundation for a Smoke-Free world: Eliminating Teen Vaping. Every student in 10th grade entrepreneurship participated in Round 1. It was a great opportunity for them to hone the opportunity analysis skills they learned in 9th grade entrepreneurship and further develop their ability to write a business plan, try the Lean Canvas Model, and work on developing a persuasive pitch. This semester students are learning about some of the ways entrepreneurs access funding, specifically the financial markets, by participating in the Florida Stock Market game. They will also explore personal finance topics and learn to build a balanced budget spreadsheet tool for their future selves. They will participate in the National Personal Finance Challenge exam in March. Students will end the year with an internal marketing plan competition, where they will act as the Marketing Directors for well-known multinational brands and create a prototype and marketing plan to support a new product/service launch. There is a plan to visit the University of Tampa's Lowth Entrepreneurship Center's New Venture Expo this Spring.

2019 NATIONAL ENTREPRENEURS' DAY On November 19, National Entrepreneurs' Day, CDS successfully launched a school-wide initiative to have every student participate in an entrepreneurship lesson or activity. In elementary school, some students learned how to take a big idea, nurture it, and change the world by reading What Do You Do With an Idea? by Kodi Yamada. Other elementary students worked together in a balloon challenge with the goal to build the tallest tower using the least amount of tape. There were even small business presentations by 5th graders that made us want to invest! In middle school, students were tasked with an opportunity analysis activity of looking at an image and developing three potential businesses that solved a problem. Self-driving luggage with GPS devices, valet services in airports, and color-coded luggage were just a few of the ideas. In preparation for the real world, all upper school students wrote and videotaped a 30-second elevator pitch with the hopes of gaining an internship, job opportunity, or a mentor. With the task of keeping it under 30 seconds, students had to figure out how to "sell themselves" effectively. At the end of the day, the initiative was a success, however, it was also evident that CDS students and faculty are entrepreneurial thinkers every day. The way our students, from preschool to the senior class, approach challenges and obstacles can only be described as an entrepreneurial mindset. Time and again CDS students challenge themselves to improve their skill set. They fail and then they try again until they find success. So today and every day it is the inherent mission of CDS “to create entrepreneurial 7 thinkers for a global society.

The PATH(S) TO SUCCESS How CDS Works for Everyone Whether the end goal is graduating with a white stole and a full IB Diploma or walking across the stage with a CDS diploma in hand, the educational path for every student that walks through the doors of Carrollwood Day School is an individual one. From preschool through 12th grade, the opportunities are vast and while the goal is always graduation, the paths vary from student to student. That is the versatility of CDS...the path of each student is created by the student. Starting at our Early Childhood Campus, the program is about asking big questions and nurturing a small child's curiosity and confidence. Whether learning conflict resolution through play or spacial awareness with building blocks, the foundation for a successful education is being built. Continuing into Kindergarten, students begin to carve their paths towards success in school and in life. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) takes students through 5th grade and develops skills like self-directed learning, motivation, and confidence. Through world languages, math, music, science experience, and much more, the program sets up life-long learning for the youngest members of our community.

Middle School students at CDS are nurtured academically, socially, and emotionally. CDS fosters growth and stamina through hands-on lessons and encourages students to be risk-takers and empathetic citizens in order to discover new passions and promote strengths that will lead to community and global impact. The middle school at CDS provides that bridge between the elementary classroom and the upper school programs. Designed to meet the needs of early adolescence, Middle School helps students develop skills, independence, and a sense of self.

With a maximum of 400 students in grades 9-12, the CDS Upper School gives each student the opportunity to come out for a team, help plan and support events, get involved in service initiatives -- simply, be an active, involved member of the community. Academically, the same advantage exists. Our graduates, whether full IB, course candidates, or CDS diploma graduates, leave CDS ready for the next stage in life. We are proud to say 100% of our CDS graduates since 2009 have matriculated to college and many report back that the transition from high school to college was seamless.

WHY IB

"...in recent years, as the understanding of the IB program has grown in the United States, it has become a preferred curriculum for many post-secondary institutions because of its similarity to university-level learning and teaching methodologies. The IB program is not solely about academics; it also challenges students to enhance their personal growth. IB aspires to help schools develop well-rounded students with strong character and a global mindset. IB students often indicate that they have gained excellent time-management skills and other critical attitudes needed for academic and personal success." "Finally, in terms of assessment, students have multiple opportunities in each course to “show what they know using various modes of communication and formats. The IB program is not about memorizing and guessing from a list of answers, but about truly understanding the material at a deeper level." Kristen Mariotti Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management, Stoneleigh-Burnham School

Research has shown that artistic expression is essential to the human experience. The arts, whether visual, theatrical, or musical, give us the opportunity to reflect on experiences, empathize with others, and express different viewpoints. At CDS, we are constantly in awe of the imaginations and creations of our students. The Elementary Chorus is alive and well with over 50 singers from grades 3-5. This year 4th and 5th graders have been accepted to perform on the Marketplace Stage at Disney Springs in April. This is also the first year for the newly formed, Elementary Orff Ensemble. Orff is a music approach that involves students in playing, singing, and moving. It usually includes xylophones, metallophones, recorders, drums, and glockenspiels. Our group has also incorporated ukuleles into their band. In our middle school, musicians are learning the difference between strings and wind instruments and continuing to develop their instrumental skills. The students are beginning to realize that creating beautiful music involves more than just playing notes. Our junior thespians traveled to States for their One Act, and our visual artists showcased their dreamscapes, cubism, and self-portrait skills at an exhibit at MOSI.

4th grader, Aydan, was selected to display his "Toucan in the jungle" at the Tampa Museum of Art, You @ Art exhibition.

Middle School Junior Thespians compete at the State competition

Even in Language Arts, students showed artistic expression while studying The Outsiders. The Upper School Diploma Programme actors made us laugh and cry during their performance of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time," and honors musicians with a thirst for more started the inaugural Tri M Music Honor Society, a performance and community service organization spreading their love of music throughout the Tampa Bay community.

"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." - Edgar Degas

Everywhere you look at CDS, the arts can be felt, whether during sporting events when you hear the AV League offering the play-by-plays or in the voices of the students as they sing in the hallways. There is poetry being read at the elementary morning openings and instruments being tuned in the music room. We are so excited for the Spring Musical, Matilda, at CDS in April and can't wait to see what our musicians and artists wow us with next.

EARLY DECISION

NEWS FROM THE

College Counseling Corner The class of 2020 is half way home with respect to the college admissions process and College Counseling would like to share some of the good news (though the majority of admissions decisions will not arrive until March, 2020) with our CDS family, both new and long tenured. As reported earlier in December, Carrollwood Day School earned Cum Laude Society Status (the secondary equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa for colleges), one of only 360 of 27,000 secondary schools (independent, public, and charter) in the United States since the founding of the Cum Laude Society in 1906. Additionally, Carrollwood Day School is 1 of 5 Cum Laude Society/ IB secondary schools in Florida and 1 of only 15 Cum Laude Society/ IB secondary schools in the United States. By any standard of measurement, CDS is among the most competitive schools in the nation.

Please stay tuned, as many decisions will not arrive until late March/early April. The college counseling office will communicate final results in early May. There are 66 seniors in the Class of 2020 and nine of them will be scholar-athletes next year when they maneuver toward their college experience (in 6 different sports), including four women’s basketball players and a fencer! What an incredible accomplishment for the CDS community, the athletic department, and all coaches involved. (see page 13) Congratulations to all.
