I CAN RELATE TO THE QUOTE, “Whoever said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend never had a dog.” I cannot remember a time of my life when I haven’t had a dog. And to this day when my family gathers, the dogs almost outnumber the humans. Whether you’re a cat, dog, guinea pig, or fish person, it’s always a treat to come home to a loving companion at the end of a long day. I can’t remember ever meeting a dog I didn’t like, and I think the feeling has been mostly mutual. When our cover stars and local celebrity pups, Ruby Rose and Emma Grace, came into our studio, they immediately melted all our hearts. As you can see in my editor’s photos, we became fast friends. And once the ice cream cake came out, the deal was sealed. I mean, who doesn’t want someone that looks at you like those pups are eyeing that cake?! You can meet them and more celebrity pets on page 59. Also in this issue, you’ll see we expanded one of your reader favorites: The Pet Parade. The response we got this year was overwhelming, and who are we to leave anyone out? Enjoy all of those cute fur babies (and even a scaly one) starting on page 67. So let the “awwws” commence because — trust me — there are some fun pictures ahead. Enjoy!

Susu Hauser

The Woman Behind the Camera WRITTEN BY DENA DAW | PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN

I really gravitated toward dance and the arts, and that continued through middle and high school. I was always an individual. There’s a quote that says, ‘Dare to be different; dare to be yourself.’ I think I lived that to a T.” — Susu Hauser 22 AUGUST 2022

THE YOUNGEST DAUGHTER of a superior court judge and a Hungarian refugee, Cary resident Susu Hauser — a selfdescribed visual storyteller — has been surrounded by inspiring narratives since birth. “My father presided over many criminal cases, but devoted 20 years to domestic violence cases. He made such a mark that the mayor named May 4 Larry Hauser Day,” said Hauser. “My mother was a Hungarian refugee during the Hungarian Revolution and escaped Budapest in 1956. I lived with her stories of the escape and the resilience and strength that she showed over the years.” Inspired by her parents, Hauser was never afraid to get her feet wet and try her hand at everything. As a young girl, she did gymnastics, dance, piano, jewelry-making, swimming, you name it. “I really gravitated toward dance and the arts, and that continued through middle and high school. I was always an individual,” said Hauser. “There’s a quote that says, ‘Dare to be different; dare to be yourself.’ I think I lived that to a T.” Hauser’s originality and passion for new experiences caught the eye of her high school counselor, who suggested that she go into communications in college. Hauser took the advice to heart, earning her degree in visual media communications and a minor in studio art at American University. After finishing up an internship with The George Michael Sports Machine, Hauser took her

creativity and spirit of adventure all the way to Los Angeles. “I had zero connections in LA, but I knew it was where I needed to be to do studio television,” said Hauser. “California was calling, and I moved three months after graduation.” Like many LA transplants, Hauser worked a variety of odd jobs to pay rent, from dog walking and catering to stints at Starbucks and Jamba Juice. It was during those early days that Hauser met Maria Jovanovic, artist and founder of MJ Atelier, an LA-based art studio. “I have had the honor of knowing Susu for almost 20 years,” said Jovanovic. “She became the most amazing sidekick apprentice! Susu reminds me to keep searching for the significance in what I do, to enjoy the process and find small ways to touch and inspire others along the way. The impact on my life is like her art: hauntingly beautiful!” Although Hauser enjoyed her time working as an artist assistant, it was her longtime passion for dance that led to her first job in the industry.

Lucky for us, award-winning professional photographer and cinematographer Susu Hauser has made her home in the “green and vibrant” Town of Cary.

“I guess this is a thread in my life: If I follow my passions, they’ll eventually lead me to where I need to be,” said Hauser. “I was at a jazz class in Studio City, and I met a girl there who was the coordinator for Deadliest Catch, so I sent her my resume and hounded her. That’s how I got my first production assistant job at Original Productions, which produced some of the top-rated reality shows on TV.” Hauser climbed every rung on the lad-

der on her way to the top, from production assistant all the way to producer — going out of her way to make a name for herself in the docu-reality world. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, going from point A to B wasn’t always easy, but Hauser’s persistence and resilience paid off. “I’ve never known Susu to complain about the long hours and hard work that goes into creating her art. She is almost oblivious to the elements and the discom-

forts encountered in many places and remains humble and honest in all aspects of her life,” said Jovanovic. If you ask Hauser for outlandish career highlights, she’s got them in droves. Filming in a Piper Cub with the engine cut out and coasting down for Discovery Channel’s Airplane Repo? Done. Shooting out of US Coast Guard choppers with California Fish and Game for National Geographic? Been there, done that. Not to mention shooting off the CARY MAGAZINE 23

back of Harleys for the History Channel, on top of SUVS across Atigun Pass in Alaska, or filming NASA physicists who designed instruments for the Voyager mission and Maya women in the highlands of Guatemala. “I’ve filmed in every walk of life, every environment,” said Hauser. “I’m no shrinking violet, and I love to live life to the fullest. I think as a person that values freedom and curiosity, this career has fit me perfectly, and it’s allowed me to tap into both of those.”

After spending years on the road bouncing from show to show, Hauser reevaluated what she wanted out of life and founded The Invisible Lens alongside her ex-husband, with a mission to create meaningful and impactful programming to enhance communities — especially in the areas of conservation, environmental and philanthropic filmmaking. During this time, Hauser produced a full-length documentary about undiscovered species in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains National Park and a short documentary called Voices of the Inside Passage about transboundary mining between southeast Alaska and British Columbia (which later went to the Colorado Environmental Film Festival in 2018). Following their passions came with a price, however; Hauser adds wildlife photography to her expansive Hauser and her then-husband portfolio on one of her many treks across Africa. Byron Goggin found them-

selves financially squeezed and decided to move to North Carolina after a brief spell in Colorado. “We did a lot of searches on livability, and I loved what I was finding about Cary in particular,” said Hauser. “The Cary Arts Academy was a huge selling point, as well as all the recreation and greenways. There’s just a vibrance. After just a week in Cary, I knew that I could make it home.” The pandemic brought a lot of change to Hauser’s personal life and career. The dissolvement of her marriage meant the end of The Invisible Lens, and Hauser found herself hitting the reset button on her life. After losing her job as the multimedia specialist for the AKC, Hauser threw herself into volunteer work, creating the Women Making Change video for Dress for Success, volunteering with the Living Arts Collective in Durham, and picking up freelance work with the AKC. “Susu is a cinematographer and storyteller who is never afraid to challenge

the status quo, and her creativity seems to have no limits,” said Magen Leavell, AKC’s online education manager. “Using the American Kennel Club’s historical records, archival footage, oral histories, interviews, and more, Susu brought stories to life in a new and innovative format for a new generation of viewers.” Prior to the pandemic, Hauser had looked into producing a documentary about the empowerment of women through fair trade and the artisan market. Unfortunately, Hauser’s idea had everything to do with travel, and Covid had different plans. With extra time on her hands, Hauser’s endless thirst for knowledge led her to Photographers Without Borders. “The stars aligned, and I found an assignment that was in the Guatemalan highlands working with Maya women who are skilled in textiles and embroidery. It hit all of the elements — transformation through art, empowerment of women through art, and empowerment of Indigenous cultures,” said Hauser.

During her time in Guatemala, Hauser I’ve seen that in all corners of the counwas able to document the artistry and impact try and the world. And I want to show of Multicolores, a nonprofit supporting Maya people, because those women inspire me women in their process of self-discovery and to keep going.” t artistic development. Hauser now hopes to If you are interested in learning more find a venue for a fully immersive multimedia about Hauser’s mission to level the playing exhibit, featuring embroidery, video, photos, field for everyone, especially women and girls, and even sound effects from the area. or to just see and appreciate her work, visit “I feel that everyone has a starting line in susuhauser.com. life, and I was very blessed to have started with so many opportunities,” said Hauser. “I want to pay that forward and expose others to life’s joys and life’s offerings. I want to focus on projects that empower women and girls, in particular.” “There’s a great W.E.B. Du Bois quote that says, ‘There is no contributed photo force equal to a woman determined to rise,’ and "I’ve observed Susu’s influences, and she elevates everyone around her in a holistic way,” said Magen Leavell, online education manager for the AKC.

IF YOU’VE VENTURED INTO a restaurant, bar, office building, or shopping district recently, you’ve likely come across a living wall. Also called vertical gardens, green walls, and plant walls, these installations are not only aesthetically pleasing, but provide a host of other benefits. But first thing’s first … most people just want to know how you do it! CARY MAGAZINE 29

How they work

“People are fascinated with how they work and the designs we are able to put on these walls,” said Leslie Herndon, VP of Operations at Greenscape in Holly Springs, which has installed and maintains several living walls in Raleigh’s Village District. “Our walls at the Village District require quite a bit of maintenance, as they are outside and designed to be changed out frequently. We water them in the summer almost daily, and they are heavily pruned due to the aesthetic we are looking for. We treat these as living art.” Interior living walls that are more permanent are watered less frequently due to the reduced heat of the environment. However, they all need to be scouted for insects and diseases and fertilized frequently. Irrigation systems, which are installed behind the plants, also need to be monitored regularly, as the slightest issue can create problems with plant life. While Herndon has installed an entire edible wall for Village District in the past — complete with mini tomatoes and herbs

— they stick to mostly annual flowers in the summer. Currently they have lantana, coleus, scaevola, salvia, firetails, and many more. In the winter, it will change to pansies, violas, heuchera, and ivy. Sarah Marks of Atlantic Designscapes, which designed and maintains a living wall in the bar area of Cary’s kō•än restaurant, adds that indoor environments require just as much technical care as they do creativity. “The design changes with plants periodically and through the seasons. Also, plant care is much more than watering,” said Marks. “That environment goes through changes along with our regular seasons. Heating and air conditioning shifts the needs of a green wall, as well. It is made up of many smaller trays, so that allows us to use plants with different water needs.” The wall at kō•än, filled with dracaena, pothos, philodendron, and bromeliad, is cared for once a week.

Go Maintenance-Free with Moss! Moss walls are a great way to bring nature into your home, but without the all the upkeep of a living wall. We chatted with Paula Higdon, owner and buyer for Cary’s City Garden Design, to learn more about this trend. How does a moss wall differ from a living wall? The moss is preserved, so it's no longer living. Unlike living walls, moss walls do not require any light or water. A lot of people assume that moss walls need to be misted for moisture, but there really is zero maintenance required. Much like a potted plant, living walls need regular maintenance like irrigation, light, and sometimes pest control. For the most part, moss walls are one and done. What kind of moss is used, and how is it preserved? There are lots of options: mood, sheet, reindeer, shag, and Spanish moss. The moss is preserved with a plant-based glycerin and natural dyes. The glycerin is used to keep the moss fresh and moist looking, and the dye is used for long-lasting color. There are many shades of greens and color options. A lot of the moss we use comes from the mountains of North Carolina and Kentucky. How do you make a moss wall last? The moss will last for years. Since it’s dyed, it’s best used inside away from the elements such as rain and direct sun. Avoid using it in really arid areas and around fireplaces. Is there unlimited potential as far as design goes? Moss walls offer a lot of room for creativity and personalization. They can be simple and offer a more natural, organic look or be bold and abstract like a piece of modern art. For a more natural look, we'll incorporate pieces of driftwood, preserved ferns, lichen, or mushrooms. Or for something fun, we'll use geodes, crystals, and feathers. Why have these become so popular? Moss walls are a great way to add greenery and bring nature indoors without any maintenance. They can be used in almost any setting as a fun and interest-

ing way to express creativity. Pinterest and social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook are a great way to see how people are using moss. The possibilities seem to be endless. A living wall in Raleigh's Village District was installed and is cared for by Greenscape out of Holly Springs.

What are the benefits? Studies have shown biophilic interiors, such as moss walls, can help reduce stress and anxiety. Moss walls are created using sustainable, natural materials and allow us to feel more connected with nature while indoors at either home or work.

Benefits “You get the opportunity to green up gray spaces, which provides environmental and aesthetic benefits,” said Herndon. “We also want to encourage people to get outside and create enjoyable spaces for them to be in. Go have your photo taken at one of the many walls in the Village District, including a double-sided one you can put your face in the middle of for the photo opp.” Inside, they are good at providing clean air, noise reduction, and simply creating something beautiful to admire. At Bond Brothers Eastside, their 12-foot by 12-foot living wall greets you on the right just after passing through the door. Installed in 2021 with the help of Cary’s Garden Supply Company, this wall boasts ferns; several varieties of pothos; pink, neon, and white butterfly Syngonium; Hypoestes (polka dot plant); and nerve plants. “They supplied the plants, and my brother and I made and installed it,” said co-owner Jay Bond. “We initially planned on making it at our other location, so I did research probably over six years ago and had the design in my head. But it wasn't until

we opened here that we realized this is just a perfect spot for it.” Bond and his brother Jeremy made the drip irrigation system themselves. They also do all the maintenance. “You have to maintain it just like a house,” said Bond. Every once in a while, I walk up and just take off some dead pieces or, as things grow bigger, I take cuttings off and I propagate them in little glass jars. When they root, I put them back in the wall.” They also installed three grow lights overhead that are on a schedule to give the plants light during the night. “They come on until the morning, so they’re pretty much getting sunlight all the time,” said Bond. Caring for the wall comes naturally to Bond. “I was in horticulture with a small company that grew herbs and flowers years before I started working in the beer industry,” he said. “I have always loved plants, and it was on my bucket list to do something where I can come in and play with it, look at it, watch it grow, and take care of it.” A living wall was the plan for kō•än from the very beginning, when they opened in 2019. “The concept for the restaurant was to make it open, airy, and fresh, and that’s CARY MAGAZINE 33

where all the plants and the plant wall come into play,” said manager Brandy Ray. “The customers love it. They take pictures in front of it, and are always asking if it’s real because they can’t believe we have such a big wall that is watered and maintained.”

Where to begin Shannon Theis with Garden Supply Company suggests an easy way to get the look and feel of a living garden at home. “While we do not offer installation of living walls, we do feature picture frame planters to create a small living wall space,” she said. The planters come is three sizes up to 8 inches by 10 inches. They lay flat for watering, then get hung back up. There is a drip reservoir for the remaining water. 34 AUGUST 2022

HOUSE It Going in the Real Estate Market? A Realtor Q&A WRITTEN BY DENA DAW

REMEMBER WHEN buying a house was pretty straightforward? You’d find a real estate agent to help you peruse available homes, go to open houses completely unannounced and enjoy freshly baked cookies, and possibly send a lowball offer in to see if the seller would bite — ah, the good old days. As we all know, times have changed. We are now operating in an extreme seller’s market, meaning that there are more buyers than homes, and the demand is exceeding the supply. It’s time to take everything you thought you knew about buying or selling a home — including your parents’ well-meaning advice — and throw it out the window. We recently spoke with three successful real estate agents in the Triangle to guide you along your house hunting (or selling) journey, from buying and selling strategies, tips and tricks of the trade, and everything that’s happening in the wild, wild West of real estate these days. Godspeed!

question the price. The right price and condition of the house will attract the most buyers.

Residential Should owners worry about photos/ When buying,

should you waive

That is one of your biggest selling points. Not that many buyers will make such a big investment without knowing what it looks like from inside. There is a world of insanity, but it still comes with a little visual. Professional photographs and floor plans with proper measurements are crucial. Staging is optional. There are families who take such good care of their house and furnish it in such a unique way that you want to present that real life to your potential buyers. In these instances, we like to soft stage and de-personalize the house. When a house is empty or needs professional furnishing, we always recommend staging.

contingencies for a stronger offer?

Not all the time. I have won so many deals without waiving anything. It really depends on the location and property and its potential. We don’t want to give away everything just because it’s a seller’s market. A business deal happens when there is a potential for both parties. When it’s all one-sided, it almost never works. If a property is fairly new, we can waive contingencies. But know that NC is an “asis” state when it comes to selling. As per our legal offer to purchase and contract, sellers really don’t have to say yes to any repairs.

What are some major pitfalls to look Should you list above market value

to drive offers higher, or lower to

1. Price. These are the pitfalls for any market, but especially today. Always make sure you are working with your real estate advisor on the price. Do your homework and make sure you are offering the right price, given the potential of the house. Do not buy just because.

reel them in?

Oh boy! Never above market value — not in this market, not in any market. We all fall into this. As an owner and a seller, we always think our property is worth way more than what it actually is, and as a buyer, we always

2. Location. I would rather pay more for the right location than less for a poor location. I always advise my clients to invest in the location first, and then the house. You can build a house anywhere, but you cannot replace a location. Invest in that. That will sell in any market. caulgroup.com Tracy Watson, Mission First Realty Do you really need a realtor when the houses seem to be selling themselves?

Absolutely! My business as far as prepping my sellers’ homes hasn't changed — I still offer the highest level of service, including staging consults and top-level photography and videos. Many homes are selling with multiple offers, so an agent comes in handy when weeding through the 20 to sometimes 40 incoming offers. The highest offer isn’t always the best of the bunch. How quickly are homes selling at the moment?

Most are selling within the first week, but it honestly still depends on the home's price. If it's overpriced when listed, it will sit longer. Certain price points and locations are taking over a week to sell, even in this market. What is the highest amount a house has gone over market price?

I've had a listing sell for $125,000 over the asking price. I try to price my homes where I believe they will appraise when we get to that point. How much earnest money are people asking for nowadays?

38 AUGUST 2022

I've not been seeing earnest money given on any offers I've received, and I'm not offering it on any offers I have been writing. Due diligence, however, is still high depending on the area and the home. I'm seeing anywhere from $1,000 to in excess of $100,000 in due diligence funds. missionfirstrealtync.com

Keith Bonham, Keller Williams Realty Cary How has the housing market changed in the last year?

Inventory has definitely dwindled during the pandemic, as we saw people listing their homes for sale only because they absolutely had to, whether it was for job relocation or other life happenings. Now with the rise in interest rates, we are seeing a small uptick in inventory and a drop in showings per listing. I believe that there will still be multiple-offer situations, as we still are one of the fastest-growing areas in the US. However, I think that the homes that will receive multiple offers will be the ones in the most desirable areas that have been updated, prepped, and move-in ready. The days of just putting a home on the market with no competition and very little prep are coming to an end. What’s the average number of showings that people are seeing, and in what time frame?

The weekends continue to be the popular time for houses to go live on the market for showings, with most selling quickly, as the average days on the market are three in Cary, five for Apex, and four in Morrisville. The number of showings per listing in those areas has dropped dramatically. We were seeing, on average, 30-50 showings per listing in January, and that has dropped to just 1316 on average for May for those same areas. New build or older home — which is better?

It really depends on the area, but I think there is a better chance to negotiate new construction at the moment. We are starting to receive more calls and emails from builder reps as they are starting to see an uptick in their inventory. Due to the supply

chain issues the past couple of years, many builders have opted to hold back inventory until the homes have reached a stage closer to completion to ensure less delays but also maximize profit. Builders were locking in prices on homes for buyers and then, six to nine months later, they were selling those same floor plans to new buyers for $50,000$100,000 more.

other agents out there?

Inventory is still going to remain tight in this area for quite a while. I don't necessarily see a crash coming, but rather a leveling off of home prices with a small percentage increase in value year over year. Based on simple supply and demand, it would take A LOT of inventory to hit the market and sit before we see any significant price decreases in this area. keithbonhamrealtygroup.com

Building the Dream A Tale of Tenacity STILL CHASING DREAMS at 71 years young, Cary resident Barbara Ocain has been through more than most. After surviving two lightning strikes, a breast cancer diagnosis, and an ill-timed hip replacement, Ocain was encouraged to enjoy a simpler, slower life surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Clearly, they didn’t know who they were dealing with. “Don’t let your age or your career choices get in the way. If you want something, go for it,” said Ocain. “Here I am at this point in my life when people say I should be slowing down, but I feel like I’m just getting revved up!” Originally from Montgomery, AL, Ocain attended undergraduate school at Emory University and graduate school at Georgia State University. After receiving degrees in school psychology, Ocain attended law school at the University of Denver and spent a summer taking specialized law courses at the invitation of Harvard Law School. Following marriage and kids, Ocain and her family moved back to Alabama before transferring to the Raleigh area in 1998. “We knew about Cary. We’d done the research and we knew how great it was,” said Ocain. “That was the only place that we wanted to live. The kids went to high school and local colleges, and they’re still here, married with kids of their own.” Ocain planned on retiring 10 years ago, but was offered a dream job as an attorney for SAP, a huge global software company. The change in pace, which included international travel, inspired her to take out a new lease on life. “It’s been an interesting career, kind of a patchwork. I get to travel globally, and it’s in-

fluenced my style of home. I love the Scandinavian homes, their simplicity, their clean lines.” Ocain, who already owned a small place in Pine Knoll shores, NC, found the perfect example of her IKEA-inspired dream home while browsing Pinterest. Funnily enough, the house (located in Toronto) actually be-

cant lot. I wanted it all on one level, and we wanted the space to store a boat — I don’t have one, but my kids do. I found the developer who owned the lot next to me and made him a cash offer, and he agreed. The next step was finding an architect.” As it turns out, modern-style homes around Pine Knoll Shores are not easy to come by. Ocain eventually found a house she liked in Wilmington and tracked down the architect: Gordon Hall. “Barbara contacted me by phone in 2019,” said Hall. “We had a great conversation. The more Barbara and I talked, the more closely aligned our design values seemed to be.” Upon settling on Hall, Ocain’s next challenge was finding a builder. After months of interviews, she eventually hired Jeremy Bishop, the owner of Sterling Custom Construction. Despite being based out of Wilmington, Bishop grew up near Pine Knoll Shores and his father, who still lives in the area, now serves as the project manager. “This is our first project with Gordon,” said Bishop. “We primarily work with architects and designers. This house is unique because it’s got a little bit of a mid-century modern feel to it; it’s not just a typical beach house. That’s the kind of architecture we like to focus on. Barbara’s is the second modern home we’ve worked on in that area.”

courtesy of Gordon Hall

"The interior layout is based on a 3 bedroom, 2 1⁄2 bath program. The primary living space is on the elevated level together with the master suite. The great room, kitchen, and dining areas are all open, contiguous space with large window openings (nearly floor to ceiling) shaded by a roughly 4 1⁄2 foot deep roof canopy,” said architect Gordon Hall.

Once the dream team was assembled, the hard work began. The initial plan involved altering and adding onto the existing home, which was a somewhat dated ranch clad in reverse board and batten siding. “Though not immediately in a flood hazard, a key attribute of the new design would include consideration for a potential future flood risk,” said Hall. “As such, Barbara proposed a bi-level design strategy. The idea was that the new added living space would be elevated above any potential future

flood risk. After review by a handful of contractors, it became clear that the proposed design was out of scale in relation to cost.” “In the follow-up design, the original house would be removed altogether (with the exception of the kitchen range). However, the bi-level design continued to resonate, as did a number of the original design gestures. Rather than starting over, the design that we decided to build is in many ways a scaled-down version of where we started.” CARY MAGAZINE 43

Ocain’s new build is set to be finished by the end of 2022.

With final plans in place, things were looking up — until Covid hit and everything went to “heck in a handbasket,” said Ocain. “Prices skyrocketed and supply chain issues happened. You couldn’t get workers. My friends and neighbors were like, why are you trying to build a house during a pandemic at an age when you should be retired? We had to sit and wait. Things

would progress, but slowly. We’re still only about halfway completed. We broke ground about a year and a half ago. I should be completed by the fall of this year, fingers crossed.” Since 2000, Pine Knoll Shores has been designated as a Tree City USA (an Arbor Day Foundation program). As such, elements of sustainability are literally built into the landscape, and trees are closely monitored and Barbara’s Building Tips protected by local ordinances. • Patience & pleasantness. We try to recapture everything, including the rainwater. Now that I-42 is being developed and will create a straight shot to the beach, she suspects that it will create a huge boom and a great opportunity for interested buyers. “Ultimately, this is a story of determination, vision, no age barrier, and a lot of humor. There have been so many odd challenges, from pine beetles, neighbors' reactions, a hip replacement, getting licenses when no one is working at the town office, the dreaded supply chain issues, and patience ad nauseam.” “In the end, if you want something, go for it. You can do it, just get the right team around you. There’s been everything in the world thrown at us, minus a hurricane. It’s not been easy, but you have to keep the longterm goal in mind.” t

The Wonderful World of Wallpaper

WRITTEN BY DENA DAW

HEAR ME OUT — Top Gun is the highest grossing movie of the year, mullets have made a comeback, Kate Bush is at the top of the charts, and wallpaper is back in style. It’s 1986 all over again, and we’re not mad about it (except for the mullet)! Don’t worry, this ain’t your mama’s wallpaper! When paired with this year’s trending colors, wallpaper can add chic visual interest to any room. There are designs for every taste, from traditional florals and tropical patterns to animal motifs and geometric prints. “Wallpaper is a key trend for 2022,” said Lauren Burns, interior designer and owner of Lauren Burns Interiors. “I think one reason is that there are now so many options and styles to choose from, much like fabric always has given us. Wallpaper no longer only has printed paper options. There are now embellished corks, grasscloths with designs, and metallic wallpapers, to name a few. I also think that since the emergence of removable wallpaper options, it has driven homeowners to explore this design element.” Although the choice and use of wallpaper is completely up to the homeowner, selections can be guided by trending paint palettes that bring peace and tranquility to the home. “I am a huge fan of any type of wallcoverings as an interior designer because it also allows me to create spaces that add a layer of texture or a bold ‘wow’ statement for clients,” said Burns. “A well-designed space should not only feel collected, but most importantly to represent those who live there and how they want to feel when they are at home.” laurenburnsinteriors.com

AR Workshop Cary As a custom DIY home decor boutique, AR Workshop specializes in instructor-led workshops — no previous art/crafting experience required!

WRITTEN BY DENA DAW PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRYAN REGAN

AS SMALL-BUSINESS OWNERS and parents of five children ranging in age from 25 to 1, Holly Springs residents Stacy and Harrison Phillips have a lot on their plate. Despite their busy lives, both take pride in being an active part of the community and enjoy providing a fun and safe place for people to gather. “I have owned other successful businesses through the years, although none as fun as the AR Workshop Cary,” said Stacy Phillips. “My husband currently serves in the military. When he is home, he is very involved with the shop. We love running this business together.” 50 AUGUST 2022

With 150 other franchise locations across the country, AR Workshops offer both retail items and hands-on DIY classes to customers. We recently caught up with Stacy to learn more about their location and what experiences they provide for local residents.

What exactly is AR Workshop?

We are a custom DIY home decor boutique. After selecting your project online and registering for one of our Home Decor or Specialty workshops, you will arrive at your scheduled workshop, where

you will have the opportunity to customize your project by choosing your painting technique and selecting your paint colors or non-toxic stains to work with. All guests will leave the workshop with a completed and Pinterest-worthy project at the end of class! Don’t worry about your artistic talents — we specialize in instructor-led workshops, and no previous art/crafting experience is required. We have daily workshops for you and your friends. We also love to help you host private parties for any age or celebration. We can help you create team-building events that everyone

enjoys, as well as youth camps in summer and trackout dates that include projects children complete and take home every day. AR Workshop Cary is for everyone! Additionally, we offer retail mostly made in NC, supporting small local businesses and smallbatch (not on Amazon) artisans.

What attracted you to the franchise?

My husband and I were regulars to the Cary location. We had date nights and made custom home decor for our home. I had girls’ nights, caught up with friends, and made more projects that I treasure. Each time we went to the workshop, we talked about how the AR Workshop could be a perfect fit for us. Eventually we inquired about opening our own workshop, and the previous owner of the Cary location suggested we purchase it from her. She was the owner of both the Cary and Raleigh locations. Her busy schedule made it impossible to give the Cary location all the love it deserved. So, Harrison and I decided to acquire the Cary AR Workshop. As of February of this year, we are the new owners of the AR Workshop Cary.

Stacy and Harrison Phillips, owners of AR Workshop Cary, take pride in providing a fun and safe gathering place within their community.

AR Workshop offers many opportunities for kids and teens, including birthday parties, youth-based DIY projects, and summer art camps. CARY MAGAZINE 51

Have you always been a DIY guru?

Yes! We love home projects. If you name it, we have probably done it, but my favorite was our penny floor. Absolutely stunning! What is the most popular class/ event at the workshop?

TOP: AR Workshop also offers a selection of American-made and mostly NC-sourced decor items in-store — perfect for browsing! BELOW: Guests of all ages will leave the workshop with a completed and Pinterest-worthy project at the end of class!

52 AUGUST 2022

We have so many popular projects. Last Saturday we collaborated with a local baker, Baked_by_Maddie, and had a fantastic cookie decorating/tray workshop. Honestly, our many Christmas projects are popular all year long, especially the holiday countdowns. What is the best thing

while sharing our gifts with our local community. We love being creative and getting to know new people. What inspires you?

People. We love people! Being a positive addition to our community is very important to us. An activity to do with friends, family, and co-workers. Allowing people to create something and take it home with pride. Also, focusing our retail on American-made and mostly NC-sourced. We are supporting artisans all over NC and many from the Triangle, all the while providing jobs to people of all ages and stages in life. We have an amazing staff! t

Strange Beauty: Turtleheads

Pink turtlehead is a tough native perennial that will thrive even in soggy soil.

54 AUGUST 2022

Sometimes a weird name is the best way to describe an unusual flower. Take turtlehead (Chelone sp.), for example. Its hooded blossoms do — with some imagination on your part — look like a turtle poking its head out from a shell. Aside from this plant’s odd name and strange-looking blooms, turtlehead is a rather pretty plant. And it’s pretty tough, too. An herbaceous perennial, it is native to the Southeast and has typical wildflower durability baked into its genes, including being deer resistant. Turtlehead performs best in sunny to semi-shady gardens, but unlike many plants destined for your personal Ponderosa, it will thrive in soggy soil, making it a great addition to a rain garden or low spot in the landscape that turns to muck when the rains come. And it is an obvious option as a marginal plant in a water garden. Turtlehead does provide visual satisfaction, but you have to be patient because it waits until the high summer to begin showing off its peculiar blossoms. By then, flower towers arise on sturdy, 2- to 3-foot stems with the lower clusters opening first, and then the bloom show steadily parades upward. This pleasant progression can last over a month. If the flowers are left to go to seed, your turtlehead patch will continue to grow, just as long as the soil is kept moist to encourage new sprouts. In addition, a turtlehead will slowly expand its clump by way of underground rhizomes. And if you want extra turtleheads for other parts of your landscape or to give away to friends, it can also be propagated by divisions taken in the early spring, just as new growth begins to appear.

There are three turtleheads typically available for sale. Pink turtlehead (Chelone lyonii) is the most common — meaning easiest to find — and in particular, the cultivar ‘Hot Lips,’ which is quite a cutie with light rose flowers on red stems hovering over rich green foliage. Prefer white blooms? Chelone glabra will deliver with its pale, snapdragonlike blossoms. There is even a red turtlehead (Chelone obliqua), but the ones I have seen had flowers that were more a deep pink rather than a flashy red. Since now into September is turtlehead’s prime blooming time, if available, it won’t be hard to spot at local nurseries, but if your search comes up short, this strange beauty is an easy find online. TIMELY TIP

3 6

Challenge the soft hues of turtlehead with sassy oranges, screaming yellows, and occasional reds from other late-summer bloomers such as helianthus, rudbeckia, heliopsis, and helenium. Like turtlehead, these flashy four are native to North America and herbaceous perennials, meaning they can also become durable fixtures in your flower garden for many growing seasons. Late summer into the fall is a good time to plant such perennials. To get yours off to a good start, heavily amend the planting holes with compost or a commercial soil conditioner. Then, add mulch and water the new pretties for at least a month after planting if regular rains don’t oblige. The late-season beauty of a rudbeckia known as ‘Autumn Colors.’

To Do in the GARDEN • Although the temperatures are scorching, believe it or not, now is the time to crank up the cool-season veggie patch. Cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, Swiss chard, collards, kale, lettuce, mustard greens, onions, radishes, spinach, and turnips can all be started this month. • If you have houseplants vacationing outdoors this summer, check them carefully this month for any insect activity and dispatch accordingly to prevent any bad bugs or, in particular, their eggs from being brought inside this fall.

August • It’s a good time to plant bulbs — no, not daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, and the like, but rather unusual fall-flowering beauties such as sternbergia, colchicum, and autumn-blooming crocus. • Adding fresh water to the birdbath weekly is beneficial to birds, of course, but this chore will also help make your outside activities a little more pleasant because a neglected birdbath is a sure-fire skeeter breeder.

LOCAL CELEBRITY PETS WRITTEN BY DENA DAW PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN

Ruby Rose & Emma Grace WITH OVER 26,000 FOLLOWERS on Instagram and TikTok, Ruby Rose and Emerald “Emma” Grace are now fullfledged local pet celebrities who are way more famous than you (don’t hate the player, hate the game). Their humans are Jennifer and Jeff Myers, long-time Apex residents whose human children flew the nest and left room for two very adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. “I initially created the Instagram account for Ruby Rose when she was an onlychild dog, but Emma Grace equally takes part on the page,” said Jennifer. “I started it just for fun, then it grew to lengths we did not expect.”

Ruby Rose celebrates her 5th birthday this month, while Emma Grace turned 3 in June. Both are the product of AKC Championship parents and enjoy being paraded about town and going on fancy, dog-friendly vacations, their most current trip being to Napa Valley, California. Oh, how the other (furry) half live! Ruby and Emma’s favorite haunts include Bottle Theory, Vicious Fishes, Goodberry’s (because who doesn’t like froyo?), Fortnight Brewing, and Bond Brothers Beer Company in Cary. That said, if it’s dog-friendly and has a patio, they will probably make an appearance.

Don’t expect an autograph — that would require opposable thumbs. “I get to meet a lot of dogs at Bottle Theory, but I’m always happy to see Ruby Rose and her sister, Emma,” said Kelly Chtcheprov, co-owner of Bottle Theory in Apex. “They are so sweet and well behaved. Ruby’s social media posts and dog meetups inspired our own hashtag, #bottletheorypuppers!” Cavaliers are known to be fun-sized bundles of love who can act as either lap dogs or active companions, depending on your lifestyle. Ruby Rose is rocking a couple of titles in agility, but she is also a certified therapy dog who volunteers at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. rubyrose_the_cavalier Like her sister, Emma Apex Grace received her AKC Canine Good Citizen certification, but stopped short of receiving her therapy certification. Ah, the typical second child! “To get the therapy certification, it’s much more intense,” said Jennifer. “They are tested on things that you can’t really train them for, and Emma Grace didn’t pass. Jaqweenie “15 lbs of fun with an overbite.” YES, this is how Raleigh resident Jaqweenie is described by his human on social media, where he’s rocking 34,000 followers on Instagram and almost 30,000 on TikTok. This local pet celebrity celebrates his birthday on DOGust 1, the official birthday of all rescues who don’t have known birthdays (although his pet parents celebrate his “gotcha day” on Dec. 6). Guesstimated to be about four years old, Jaqweenie was a stray for the first year of his life until being discovered by Jean Mosher and Kirby Culbertson through a local rescue (but he’s still from the streets, so watch yourself ). “We were fostering two puppies, and I was taking them to get their vaccinations and

saw Jaqweenie and fell in love with him,” said Mosher. “He never made it to the website because I was like, ‘uh, I’ll be taking that dog.” When she first set eyes on him and his glorious overbite, Mosher thought she was looking at a Jack Russell/weenie combo and started referring to him as Jaqweenie. As it turns out, Embark paid Jaqweenie to take a DNA test — because that’s what happens when you’re famous — and he’s actually 35.7% Chihuahua, 19.1% Russell-type terrier, 7.1% Shih Tzu, 13% poodle, 10% beagle, 3.8% cocker spaniel, 2.3% Tibetan spaniel, and 9% supermutt (yes, that’s actually what it’s called). FUN FACT: On top of being the Heinz 57 of dogs, Jaqweenie also is more inbred than the most inbred character in Game of Thrones.

Unfortunately, this “fun fact” is not so fun — due to generations of inbreeding, Jaqweenie was born with an incredibly short jaw that was also rotated at an angle, causing one of his canines to poke a hole through the roof of his mouth. “I took him to see Dr. Hoover in Durham, and he did an MRI, and that tooth was going to pierce into his sinus cavity,” said Mosher. “So we had to get that tooth removed, as well as a few others, and now his tongue hangs out on that side sometimes.” In addition to being stupidly cute, Jaqweenie also uses his fame for good. He loves attending events for Freedom Ride Rescue in Raleigh, and recently used his BarkBox connections to score a free month’s worth of food for all the animals. “Jean and Kirby are huge supporters of the rescue world and started fostering with our group, Freedom Ride Rescue, earlier this year,” said Mollie Doll, chaos coordinator for Freedom Ride Rescue. “Jaqweenie’s social media presence has been a HUGE help! Jean did an Instagram ‘swap’ to promote us when we were at a huge festival, and it was one of our largest followed days in our short 2.5-year existence!”

He may have no eyelids, but don’t let Ryder fool you — thanks to medical treatment, he can still catch flies (sky raisins) with the best of them!

Ryder AS YOU CAN TELL from his eyes (and his general joie de vivre), Ryder is no run-of-the-mill black kitty! Boasting over 51,000 followers on Instagram, this local pet celebrity is famous for one thing in particular — his lack of eyelids. Allen and Laura Mason, parents to two humans and three cats, first discovered Ryder (and his condition) back in 2015. “One night we were sitting in bed, and we heard little kitten meows outside,” said Allen. “So I went back there with a flashlight and there were eight cats, but they all scattered. Then I heard another meow in an old rental truck. I rolled up the door and he was inside.” Originally thought to be a girl, Ryder was named after Honey Ryder from the James Bond novel Dr. No. As a boy, the name still works — he was trying to hitch a ride in a truck, after all. Ryder assimilated to his new surroundings immediately, but both Allen and Laura knew something wasn’t quite right from the start.

Ryder and his siblings, Vesper and Q, were all named after JAMES BOND characters. Ryder turns 7 YEARS OLD on Aug. 8 — International Cat Day! Ryder SLEEPS WITH HIS EYES OPEN, and when he’s dreaming you can see his eyes moving around! He is NOT in any PAIN. The only human food he’s ever been interested in is PEANUT BUTTER (but the doctor said that was a no-no). 64 AUGUST 2022

“We took him to the vet the very next day after we got him, and he was diagnosed with eyelid agenesis,” said Laura. “It was explained to me that it was a genetic condition where cats don’t develop their eyelids, and they usually have other eyelid abnormalities as well. For instance, Ryder also had a membrane that prevented him from moving his eyes side to side.” After taking him to a specialist in Cary, Ryder underwent surgery and had moisture-producing tissue grafted around his eyes so they wouldn’t dry out. He also had his eyes adjusted so he could move them independently, as well as laser hair removal and cryotherapy. “When some of that hair that he had lasered came in, it was white, which is why he’s got these little white eyelashes,” said Laura. “Since the surgery, his vision is really strong. He will actually catch flies and eat them. We call them sky raisins.” When he’s not catching sky raisins, Ryder uses his Instagram page to educate cat owners about his condition and spread the word that eyelid agenesis is not a death sentence. “The internet loves weird cats,” said Laura with a laugh. “We do get free toys every now and then. CatLadyBox sends us a box every month.” Although some celebrities let the fame go to their head, Ryder is just as chill and friendly as ever. By all accounts, he’s very social with people, loves snuggles, and has the personality of a dog. “I’ve known Ryder as long as I’ve known Laura, so about six years,” said Meredith Owens, Ryder’s long-term pet sitter. “I love pet sitting him because he makes you feel like you’re so special! He greets you at the door with a bunch of big meows, follows you around, and if you’re lucky he’ll bring you a toy and play fetch with you. There’s never a dull moment.” Follow Ryder at @rydernoeyelids on Instagram!

Mozzie

Super soft and always motivated by blueberries, our 4-year-old Coton de Tulear has kept up happy spirits though all his physical challenges. He was born with a condition in his front left leg where the bones in his lower and upper segments do not connect. After visits with vets and visits to the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, no treatment is available. Then, last October, he lost use of his back legs. We found that he had ruptured a spinal disc, which required surgery and a long recovery. He’s now fully active (with some home modifications) and doing great. We learn lessons of patience and compassion by caring for Mozzie, and are so glad for the talented veterinary care in North Carolina, especially Dr. Miller at Tyson Animal Hospital. — Amy Libbus, Cary

We at Cary Magazine love our pets, and from all the amazing photos we received for this year’s Pet Parade, we can tell you do, too! Thank you to all of our readers for taking the time to go online and submit your furry (or sometimes fishy!) family members. Pets are so special, and we loved shining a light on each and every one of them!

Dudley Jesse

Cody Cody is a Shiba Inu and Pomeranian mix. He looks like a fox, and he is sly like one, too. He is better at fetch than most retrievers. He is such an awesome dog! — Megan Zlokas, Apex

Jesse, born on 9/11/11, is a cavalier King Charles spaniel/poodle mix. He is a highly intelligent, loves everybody kind of boy. We were a therapy dog team for several years, visiting schools and libraries, where children enjoyed reading to him. — Marcia Sugg, Cary

Meet Dudley, a 52-pound, full of energy goldendoodle. Dudley enjoys spending her time outdoors, exploring the backyard, or running on the greenway with her humans. Dudley has been to the beach in Emerald Isle and the mountains in Virginia. She is trained to sit, lay down, and even “hug” her humans. Every day is an adventure for Dudley. Follow Dudley on Instagram: @MissDudleyDoodle. — Amanda Winstead, Raleigh CARY MAGAZINE 67

Toffee Toffee is an adopted tabby Siamese mix. Named after Gordon Ramsay’s signature Sticky Toffee Pudding, Toffee is sweet and cheeky. His favorite pastimes are stealing hair ties, napping on backpacks, and prancing around the house. He often acts more like a dog, as he plays fetch and rolls in the grass. — Kristen Chung, Durham

Vienna Lager Vienna is a 7-year-old miniature pinscher who loves Cary Greenway walks, snuggles, and hanging with her parents at Bottle Theory! — Kelly and Pavel Chtcheprov, Apex

Lu, Neo, and Oreo I would like to introduce you to my three guinea pigs: Lu, Neo, and Oreo. Lu is my rambunctious baby boy. He is always running over to the side of the cage to greet me when I walk by, and is constantly chatting about whatever he’s up to at the moment. Neo is my shy, timid girl. She’s pretty easily scared, but she does have a bit of a mischievous streak, chewing on things she shouldn’t, so I am compelled to give her snacks to chew on instead. Oreo is my big princess, with a permanent crown on her head. She’s always bossing the other two around, getting first dibs on snugly spots, and “rallying the troops” to beg for veggies. It’s never a dull moment in this household! — Rachel Sheffield, Cary

Bandit

Bandit is a 2-year-old fun-loving husky who loves being outside! He enjoys walks around the neighborhood, heading to the park, or playing in the pool. He is very friendly and wants to play with every dog he meets! — Emily Wilkins, Cary

68 AUGUST 2022

Piper Piper (aka Pipes, Poops, Snagglepoops) is a 3-year-old rescue from Cary’s Dog Warriors. She loves to cuddle, barks at dog passersby, and will do just about anything for a treat. She’s the queen of our house, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. — Jackie Minas, Cary

Addie and Brody These two have an amazing relationship! We adopted Brody (chocolate) from Peak Lab Rescue when he was 6, or so they thought. We have had him five years now. We got Addie from a breeder three years ago as a puppy. From the minute Addie came in the house, Brody and she have become inseparable. Can Addie be a little bully and spitfire? You better believe it, but we truly believe she is what is keeping Brody young and active. He has no problem putting her in her place when needed. When one is gone, the other is sad. Addie will sit by the window waiting for Brody to come back. Addie was the best thing we could have done for Brody and vice versa. They both have so much love to share. — Kari Moncrief, Cary

Tucker Tucker is just over 6 months old. He was born in Oklahoma on November 27, 2021. He is a Cavapoo. He is a very smart puppy and gives great hugs. He is playful and mischievous. He loves all people and animals. Our evening walks always include making new friends in the neighborhood. — Tracy Kahn, Cary

Dapper

Dapper is a sweet 4-year-old French bulldog. He underwent an emergency spinal surgery at only 2 years of age. The surgery saved his life, but left his back legs paralyzed. Dapper is full of love and energy, and what he lost in his legs he makes up for in personality! He loves life, walks on his wheels, cuddles, and bananas. — Sally Dixon, Cary

Ducky Ducky is a very happy dog. She loves to walk on Cary’s greenways and sniff all the plants. She has two cat brothers (Güs and Goat) and a dog sister (Little Lamb) that she loves to spend time with at home. — Mary Waligora, Cary

Harper and Hank

Katrina

Harper is a 3.5-year-old German shorthaired pointer, and Hank is our 6-month-old silver Lab. Both love the outdoors, but Harper is to a ball like Hank is to a treat of any kind. Both are lovable and have their own unique personalities. Their favorite outings are in the car to ride to daycare or a long walk on the American Tobacco Trail. There isn’t a person or new friend they don’t love. We refer to them as Harper and Hank the Tank, as he is growing day by day. — Jill Schade, Apex

Katrina was rescued in 2007. In return, she has graciously allowed me to foster kittens over the years, to pay it forward! She likes to be in the same room I’m in, but must think I’d mess up that gorgeous fur because she is not a lap cat. — Kathleen Hogan, Cary

Zoe Zoe is a mini schnauzer. She is sweet, affectionate, and very good at giving you “the look,” which always makes us laugh. Zoe loves pup cups from our local coffee shop and makes a pterodactyl-like sound when she wakes up in the morning. — Kimberly Pyne, Apex 70 AUGUST 2022

Lucky We found Lucky while we were vacationing in Mexico. He had been run over and was hiding under a car. We took him to the vet to give him up for adoption, but no one wanted him. Days passed and we had to return home, and the dog couldn’t fly with us; the airline wouldn’t let him. So we contacted a person who is dedicated to taking stuff from Mexico

to the USA in his truck, and he took Lucky! We left him on a highway in Mexico, hoping he would make it to the USA safe and sound. Three days later, after crossing the border, the guy called us to pick Lucky up on a highway in Durham! He’s so happy now! He is an undocumented dog living the American dream. — Aleida Montufar, Cary

Chrysler

Ryder

Chrysler is a salty dog with lots of attitude. He tears around the yard like he is guarding a fortress, and barks and howls at every passerby. He seriously acts like Napoleon. When he is not happy, he will actually look at me with disdain, but most of the time, he is my shadow. I adopted him in January 2021. He will be 11 in August. He follows me around everywhere, and if I am sitting, he has to be near me, leaning on me. He also has to sleep under the covers at night and will poke me in the middle of the night to pick up the quilt, where he will nestle under my right arm. — Marsha Taft, Fuquay-Varina

Ryder is a wirehaired vizsla, a rare AKC breed. He is a real sweetheart! He loves the water, hiking, and watching TV. — Brian Washburn, Cary

Luna

Luna is my grand-dog. Her parents got her from a recuse shelter. Luna brings so much joy, fun, and love to our family. She’s a mixed breed, which makes her so special. — Tanya Lane-Pringle, Cary

Huckleberry Finn Huck, as he is lovingly known, is a beloved member of our family. We rescued Huck from a bad home 11 years ago. As a puppy, he would wander away from his little brothers and sisters (hence how he got his name) and travel to a nearby garbage dump. He was there when a local rescue group found him and took him in. He was covered in ticks and had red mange, but had a personality no one could resist. He was less than a year old when we adopted him. He has such an innate sense of the need to be present with someone when they are sad or lonely. Currently, he finds the need to cuddle with my son and his daughters as they go through a difficult time. He’s our little wounded healer. — Kathy Barham, Cary

Oscar Oscar is a DoxiePoo. His mother was a mini wire haired Dachshund, and his father was a mini poodle. He’s 11 pounds of love, energy, and determination. Oscar loves people and other dogs, and enjoys socializing with both. — Sarah Joyner, Cary CARY MAGAZINE 71

Peanut

Nugget Nugget is a Lachon (Lhasa apso and bichon frise mix). He is 4.5 years old. Nugget is a sweet and playful doggie who enjoys napping and long walks. Nugget also loves meeting people and other dogs. — Nicole Martaindale, Cary

Peanut, who is an 8-year-old Dutch rabbit, is a curious, playful, and obsessive groomer. He is so soft! He lives freely in our home and loves to run up and down the stairs. When he gets to the bottom, he does a big happy jump. It makes us smile every time. He knows a few words: his name, “no,” “out,” “treats,” and the phrase, “I’m going to get you,” which he knows is play time. He will run and jump as we chase him, hiding in his box, then running out at us with a big growl (rabbits can vocalize). Then we chase him again. His favorite room is the kitchen. When he hears the fridge open, he is right there standing on his hind legs begging. He enjoys going in his pet stroller for walks, too. — Carolyn Suddaby, Morrisville

Mia is a 14-year-old white long-haired Persian with a personality all her own! Her favorite spot to sit is on the top of the couch so that she can “look down” on everybody. She chooses when she will be friendly, who she will speak to, or if she will even acknowledge your presence! But we adore this little family member. — Linda Bailey, Cary

Jazzi Joi

Scarlett Scarlett is a 1-year-old King Charles cavalier who came to us last Christmas as a surprise from Santa. She has made our family complete and offers cuddles and laughter to our family of five, especially our three girls. Scarlett is the defender of the yard,

a gracious hostess to her canine visitors, and the chaser of squirrels, birds, and voles, keeping her yard clear of violators. It’s an exhausting job, but she does it day after day without fail. — Dana Nusbaum, Cary

Jazzi Joi is 2 years old. I call her my Covid baby. I was never getting another puppy at my age (60), but God blessed me with her. She is smart, funny, and extremely nosy. She hates storms and lawnmowers, but loves people, attention, and, of course, loves belly rubs. She really is an awesome puppy! — Jameen Gude, Raleigh

Rucker Rucker is a 10-month-old English Labrador retriever who makes our lives complete. He is training to become certified as a therapy dog working in hospitals and at Appalachian State University. He loves all people, dogs, cows, and his donkey friend. His favorite place is laying on our front deck overlooking the mountains in Boone. — Stacey Bishop, Cary

Teddy Teddy is a Bernese mountain dog and is 150 pounds of goofy, silly love and fluff. He loves attention and will come sit on my feet begging to be stroked, petted, and rubbed. Rainbow

Rainbow is our pet Betta fish, who joined our family after Santa left a fish tank for our 8- and 5-year-old boys. He has surprised us with his unique personality and has become part of the family. He loves hiding in his rock cave, but he can charm us into giving him some food by putting on a fanciful display of swimming and flaring his gorgeous fins. He also likes to have visitors, and he will come to the corner of the tank for a visit when we are nearby. — Jaime Ramsbottom, Cary

Piper

Gator Gator is 4 years old. He came to us a few months ago from a friend in Columbia, South Carolina. He’s a wonderful new addition to the family! — Julie Willis, Cary

Piper is a beautiful black and tan cocker spaniel puppy that my husband and I bought during Covid. She has been an absolute godsend during this time of isolation. We were trying to do bucket list traveling before Covid, but I told my husband that if we couldn’t travel, I wanted a dog. — Kaye Rains, Cary

Carol

Finn

Chiqui

Carol is a sweet, silly, sometimes a little spicy, maybe 3-year-old rescue pup. We don’t know much about her history, but we do know she completes our little family perfectly with her sometimes eerily human quirks. Some of Carol’s favorite things include surveying the neighborhood from her pillow on the porch, running up and down the stairs as fast as she can, and chewing on her toys in your lap. — Emma Law, Cary

Things didn’t start out easy for this boy! Life for kitten Finn began as a starving, unwanted stray, but that all changed the day our paths crossed. From being a sickly, flea-infested baby, with love and care he blossomed into a beautiful, healthy boy who is dearly loved. Finn is very smart and will sit on command and beg for a treat like a dog. We feel so fortunate that he chose us to be his people. — Karen Rozell, Cary

Chiqui is short for “Chiquita” (little one). She weighs just 6 pounds, and she’s a Chihuahua-Yorkie mix. She can be a handful, but we are so glad we added her to our family. She waits for us at the front door every day after school, and she loves to play fetch and cuddle. She is our pandemic puppy. Our grandparents surprised us for our 12th birthday last year! — Janelle and Julianna Marrero, Cary

Astra Astra is a 2-year-old Shiba Inu. She’s a dog that acts like a cat and thinks like a human. She loves to play in the snow, go on rides in the ATV, and be given lots of attention! She loves to visit her grandma the most and run around on the farm. Astra is well trained and certainly has a personality! — Malorie Walters, Cary

Zoe

Having Zoe was not planned. We had lost two elderly dogs and decided that we were not going to adopt any more dogs. It was too painful to say goodbye. When Zoe came into our lives, she brought so much joy, so much laughter, and so much entertainment. We’ve had several dogs in the 20+ years that we’ve been married, but Zoe is the most spoiled dog ever. She loves both of us, but she has a love affair with my husband, Jason. It’s funny because Jason did not want to get a pit bull. I would never ask Jason to choose between Zoe and me because I know that I would be gone. He loves her to pieces, and so do I. — JoAnn Hodges, Pittsboro

Finn Finn is a dream dog!! I got Finn in October 2020 because someone was looking to rehome him. He was a year old then. He was definitely timid and didn’t trust us. Now he is such a great dog and is awesome to everyone he meets. My parents fell in love with him and got a DNA test done on him to try and get the same breed mix. His DNA test came back with 17 different breeds. Finn is definitely a one-of-a-kind pup!! — Max Kahn, Cary

Snoopy

I just started this collection comparing Snoopy to people or things I’ve seen before. He has tons of personality, an obvious sense of humor, and he does whatever it takes for attention or a marathon belly rub! His favorite toy is a stuffed squirrel since he can’t have the ones outside. — Stephanie Perryman, Durham 76 AUGUST 2022

Penny Penny is a teacup poodle that will be 6 in July. She weighs in at 2.7 pounds. She thinks she’s 50 pounds, and can be very bossy at home, but when out in the world she realizes everything is a lot bigger than her and stays close to my side! — Kelly Scott, Morrisville

He is a lovable guy who looks tough, but he’s actually scared of his own shadow. He is also a rescue and became a part of our family through German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions. Karen has been a part of our family for

about a year now. She is a playful and sweet German shepherd who can, indeed, act like a “Karen.” We were able to add her to the family thanks to German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions. Karen loves to judge, run the agility course, and lounge with her ball. — John and Melissa Flanagan, Fuquay-Varina CARY MAGAZINE 77

Bellatrix

Sabrina

Sabrina is a lovable 8-year-old German shepherd rescue. I adopted her when she was approximately 9 months old from the SPCA Long Beach when we lived in SoCal. She loves to give high fives, play with her toys, and give kisses. When she was younger, we would visit residents of an assisted living as part of their pet therapy program. We love living in Cary and enjoying the beautiful parks and greenways. — Barbara Livesy, Cary

Bella came to us as a foster from Pandora’s Paws rescue in Randleman, NC. What was supposed to be a temporary situation quickly became permanent. We fell in love with this tiny, terrified, skinny little kitten. With a lot of love, patience, and Rey’s Restaurant filet and salmon, she became healthy and happy. She loves her cat condo, going out on the screened porch (in one-minute intervals), and collapses when we walk in the house, begging for belly rubs. — Christina Reeves, Raleigh CARY MAGAZINE 79

Gunner

Gunner is truly one of a kind. He is a gentle giant that absolutely loves everyone. He gives the best hugs to everyone he meets (that wants one) and will lay on top of you and lick your face. His favorite place is Starbucks (Maynard and Chapel Hill Road). His fan club is there, and he loves his pup cups. He loves to get dressed up and pose for pictures. He and I are stuck together like glue. — Stacy Parker, Cary

Mojo Jojo, Hazel, Trevor, Remington, andAshe Trevor (aka Tiny T) is a brave, strong man who received a second chance at life. Trevor, 3.5 pounds and 6 years old, was rescued with 20 to 30 other Chihuahuas from a hoarding situation. T and his other Chihuahua friends all lived outside their whole lives with no medical care. I happened to be working at a vet hospital that partnered with the group T was rescued by. I put in to adopt him before he left the hospital that day, and we’ve been together for a year now. Ashe is a 5-year-old silver Lab mix. He 80 AUGUST 2022

is a gentle giant and a bit problematic in the health department. Part of him being a silver Lab means he is very sensitive. He has severe anxiety, as well as allergies, and spends lots of time having special treatments to help him through. Hazel is a 4-year-old Chihuahua terrier mix. She’s known as the tiny terror. Her favorite activities include digging and playing with her siblings. Remington is an 8-year-old ragdoll. After picking her up at the Wake County Ani-

mal Shelter as a kitten, Remi has become a staple in helping new animals acclimate. She acts like a dog, mostly (loves cuddles, belly rubs, and chicken). Named after the crazy monkey in the Powerpuff Girls, Mojo Jojo (Jo Jo for short) is the newest member of the family. He was found all alone in a soccer field in the summer heat a few weeks ago. His personality immediately shined through. He has loved having new dog siblings to play with. — Amber Sheppard, Raleigh

Maui

This is Maui, or @MauiTheMonster on Instagram! She loves going out for adventures and drinks. Maui hopes that someday Cary will have a dog bar, like West Street Dog in Raleigh. She also loves any type of water, pool, lake, hose, or even the fridge. Her favorite place to be is on her blow-up yacht with her bestie, Harley (@thehungry.harley). Maui was born and raised in Cary and appreciates all the dogfriendly places in the area. — Dana Duvernay, Cary

Cheetah

Cheetah started racing around from the moment she was born (and is she ever fast)! It’s almost impossible to catch a photo of her midflight, so the most treasured pic of her is the rare resting state as shown here. Cheetah is not really the fastest land animal, but she’s certainly a quick Chihuahua. — MG, Apex

Winnie

Winnie is a 1-year-old muted calico who was born under a woodpile in our niece’s backyard. She is an indoor cat, but spends a lot of time looking out the windows and on our balcony watching birds and bugs. She waits by our front door sleeping on a rug when we are gone. It is such fun having a cat! — Helen Price, Cary

Lola

Lola is a sassy, lovable, human-like Lab pointer mix with a funny personality. She has little patience for her parents’ antics, and shows it with lots of sighs. Cassie is one of those pets that is considered a true member of the family. She is friendly, obedient, loving, and lovable. She instinctively knows if one of us doesn’t feel well. She likes to hang with the family or play in the yard. Cassie enjoys long walks. Cassie and I roughhouse together. When she growls, I know she’s enjoying herself. She shoves her nose at you or pulls my hand with her paw when she wants attention. She’s Cassie, and that’s all she needs to be. — Lewis Lokitz, Cary

Cary We adopted Cary from Almost Home when she was 6 months old when we were living in New Jersey. Six years later, we moved our family to what is now our forever home in Cary. Everyone loves Cary! She greets everyone with a big hug and loves people, especially babies. She loves to sunbathe, go for walks, and go on vacation. She’s also very smart and loves and protects her family. She’s also the pickiest eater. Cary will not eat a crumb off the floor unless it’s steak or salmon. With twin boys, I was hoping she would help clean up much of the mess on the floor! Cary is an amazing and loyal dog, and we’re so happy she’s part of our family. — Lisa Kropilak, Cary

Loki

Bella

All dogs are beautiful and special! Bella is loving, sweet, and has a ton of energy. We are so lucky she chose us. — Lisa Gonsalves, Cary

We adopted Loki from Saving Grace a year ago. He’s a 3-year-old Carolina dog mix. He’s named after the Marvel character, Loki, who’s the god of mischief. This dog is definitely mischief at times. He’s a loving, sweet dog that never barks and doesn’t play; all he loves to do is kiss my hand, arm, and be petted. He’s come a long way in a year. For a dog that’s timid, he loves the mailman, and jumps in and out of bathtub for a bath on his own. He also gets excited after Bonanza goes off. As I hum the theme song, he knows that’s when it’s time to go outside. He has two tabby cat sisters. He’s protective of them. He loves to watch TV, too. — Robin Barham, Cary

Sansa Sansa is very easygoing, but spoiled! She knows what she wants and tries to do her best to get it. She is also very sweet. Explore Family Fun Summer Adventures in Your Own Backyard WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAHED BY ERICA DELONG

WITH GAS AND LIFE IN GENERAL costing a fortune, it’s nice to know we have so many fun places in our area to enjoy that won’t break the bank. First, let me introduce myself! I’m Erica DeLong, host of The Erica Show on iHeart Radio and often seen on local affiliates like My Carolina CBS. My favorite — and most important — role is mama to our two babies, our four-legged rescue, and wifey to Boston. We live in the Morrisville/Cary area, and we love to make life an adventure! No matter how big 84 AUGUST 2022

or small, you can always turn something into an adventure. If you live in this area, you know … we are so lucky to call this place home! If not, welcome! This is where you find charm, hospitality, great food, history, culture, and art all wrapped in one. If you’re looking for a few more day adventures to check out before the summer zips by, here are a few of our recent faves — familyfriendly and a great way to enjoy a Saturday or Sunday.

1

Downtown Cary

It’s gorgeous and continues to grow with the 6-acre park expansion opening in 2023. Start with brunch at Peck & Plume at The Mayton. Sit on the terrace if your pup is with you. Get there early or put your name down and go explore. Then, do a scavenger hunt with the family along Academy Street. We do this during the holidays, and it’s always a hit.

Once you’ve done all this walking, it’s time for ice cream from Fresh Local. Honestly, you can’t go wrong in downtown Cary day or night — it’s beautiful with so many dining options!

2

Bond Park

The park is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., so you can make it a full day. Our family loves to rent the pedal boats. They also offer kayaks and canoes, mostly on a first-come, firstserved basis. Bond Park provides life preservers for infants through adults, but you must be 18 to sign the paperwork! Your fur babies can’t join in on this activity. Also — new and cool — their challenge course that opened last year offers two levels and includes ziplining and rope walls. It’s perfect for team-building gatherings and for smaller groups of 10 or less. You can enjoy the playground and a picnic while there. If it’s a special occasion or just because, have a company like Sweet T Picnics come out and set everything up for you. You just show up and enjoy a beautiful lakeside picnic that’s custom designed for you! Learn about them at sweettpicnics.com.

Jean’s Neighborhood Market

Y’all, I LOVE this cute little gem and the family history behind it. A family-run business with strawberries and produce, but they’ve also added gift items to their store with some of NC’s favorites. Visit their social at @JeansMarketApex. Don’t forget the yummy doughnut truck outside, farm equipment to entertain the kids, and lady fingers to stock up your freezer! In October they make a big to-do for pumpkin season, too!

4

Garden Supply Company

We are here throughout the year for all seasons! We love to let the kids each pick a flower or plant and enjoy a day of family garden-

ing, even if it’s just to put flowers in a flowerpot outside of the door. On the way home, we usually stop for lunch at Abbey Road, which is dog friendly and has games for the kids outside.

5

The Perfect Piece

I could spend days in this store, as my husband would tell you! When I was pregnant searching for things for the kids’ nurseries, I’d often tell him to wait in the car. ”I’ll be right back.” Every time, my husband would come looking for me and then get sucked in too! This has now become a family adventure. Much of our house is decorated through The Perfect Piece. Before the summer ends, send the family in to pick their perfect piece for their rooms. You can also select something as a family to “make your own” for your home. As I type this, I literally looked around my house to see what else we could use to spruce things up! We’ve purchased everything from chairs to wall hangings to pillow shams and Christmas ornaments. Many great finds for the whole family.

AnimalKind

AnimalKind board vice president Brad Hill, store manager David Martinez, and board president Frank Gordon.

ANIMALKIND, founded by Joan Ott in 1998, originally started as a spay/neuter awareness campaign to address the overpopulation of adoptable cats and dogs in shelters across North Carolina. According to the Public Animal Shelter Report released by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, more than 35,000 pets were euthanized in 2021. Although prevention is the best solution, spaying and neutering can cost hundreds of dollars depending on the size of the animal. Over the years, AnimalKind’s mission — to end the unnecessary euthanasia of dogs and cats in NC — has evolved to include programming designed to provide financial assistance to low-income pet owners. 88 AUGUST 2022

The three pillars of AnimalKind are the ReTails Thrift Shop, the $20 Fix, and the SpayNC Helpline. Founded by Sabine French and board president Frank Gordon, ReTails Thrift Shop has a little bit of everything, from furniture and electronics to women’s clothing, all housed in a 4,000-square-foot space. 100% of net profits support AnimalKind’s mission to help disadvantaged NC residents get their animals spayed or neutered. “The reason ReTails is so popular is because it’s a treasure hunt — you can find things in thrift stores that are actually quite valuable,” said Gordon. “If you spend a lot of time in thrift stores checking them out, ReTails is on a different level, and people like

that. I know the biggest sale item we have there is women’s clothing, and we pay a lot of attention in the back before we put stuff out in the front. We’re pretty careful about what we’re putting out there on the floor for sale, especially in that category, and people know it. And the more people that know it, the bigger our customer base becomes.” Unlike many thrift stores, ReTails adopts a “waste not, want not” policy when it comes to donations. When items don’t make it to the floor, they are recycled instead of thrown into a landfill. So even if your donation isn’t chosen, it can still make a profit and assist AnimalKind in its mission. “When you go to ReTails, you’re putting your hands right on AnimalKind,” said Brad Hill, board vice president and longtime supporter of AnimalKind. “When you walk into ReTails, you’re walking into our office. So that’s a great way to start getting involved — just talk with the people who work there, look at the merchandise, and buy something.” AnimalKind’s $20 Fix Spay/Neuter program has helped over 22,000 cats and dogs since 2004 by providing financial assistance for low-income families in Alamance and Orange County. Residents in these counties are asked to go to the website and fill out an application to see if they qualify for assistance. A lot of people can’t afford to get their animal fixed, but they know what a litter of 10 kittens in spring means — it means economic ruin for them. Or heartbreak, because something bad’s going to happen to those 10 kittens and they’ll end up in the shelter,” said Gordon. “So those human beings who are able to take advantage of our programs — those are the smiles, those are the success stories, and that’s where the payoff is for us.”

ReTails Thrift Shop has a little bit of everything, from women’s clothing, furniture, electronics, and more — all housed in a 4,000-square-foot space.

Clothing is one of the most popular categories at ReTails, with women’s clothing being their biggest seller. The staff takes extra care with what they put out on the floor, making sure everything is clean, appropriate, and in optimal condition.

The discovery of a good book or the perfect conversation piece makes for an exciting treasure hunt experience at ReTails!

100% of net profits support AnimalKind’s mission to help NC residents get their animals spayed or neutered.

In addition to an online map of the most current spay-neuter options in your area, AnimalKind offers the SpayNC Helpline, available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This toll-free number provides a statewide referral service for reduced-cost spay/ neuters for those who can’t afford to get their pets fixed. All calls are answered by personnel at ReTails Thrift Shop. “We help everybody that comes in the door or calls in. My staff are one of a kind. They are unique, they are always helpful, and they love people and pets,” said store manager David Martinez. “I do this for the love of people and the love of pets. That’s the one thing that drives me and keeps me coming into work.” At AnimalKind, the easiest way to lend a helping hand is to simply shop! In addition to their thrift store, AnimalKind offers beautiful pet-themed memorial or honor cards that can be ordered directly on their website,

vided by AnimalKind, complete with sample flyers, newsletters, and useful advice on how to get started. “You can go to ReTails and get rid of your stuff. You can go to ReTails and volunteer. You can go to ReTails and shop. You can call Brad or me and say, ‘I really want to be involved in the leadership of this organization’ and get on the board. Those are the main things you can do,” said Gordon. “If you follow sports, championshiplevel players will tell you it’s not really about the wins, it’s about the losses. They’re motivated by the fear of failure because they can’t stand losing. And I don’t like losing either, but more specifically, I don’t like going to the county animal shelter. I can’t go there and not want to take them all home. Everything we do is to avoid that pain and that circumstance. And that feels good to me.” t animalkind.org

with 100% of net profits from the sale going to support their programs. These can be ordered in memory of a beloved person or pet or to mark a special occasion — the choice is yours! AnimalKind’s mission would not be possible without donations of every kind, whether it’s people hand delivering items straight to the store or money submitted online via their website. “When you donate through the website you’re making a pure injection of helpful resources that you know are targeted to the actual problem,” said Hill. Volunteers are always needed at ReTails, so be sure to swing by their location off of Spring Forest Road in Raleigh to assist in the office or help in-store. Individuals, school groups, service organizations, and those needing community service hours are all welcome. TapStation WHEN IT COMES TO RUNNING A BUSINESS that depends on walk-in customers, location is paramount. TapStation, a family-friendly restaurant and brewery that opened in May, might be the most perfectly positioned spot in Apex. Situated on the busy corner of West Williams and South Salem streets near downtown, the two-story space includes a rooftop patio bar, a playground, and ample outdoor seating. The building formerly housed Holt & Sons, a longtime automotive service station, and the new owners have gone to great lengths to preserve the nostalgic vibe. “We wanted to maintain the essence and historic status of the building, so we designed the new concept around the service station theme,” explained Jonathan Pierce, founder and managing partner of TapStation along with his wife, Maggie Pierce, as well

as Jeff and Meredith Kromenhoek. The two couples also co-founded Scratch Kitchen & Taproom, which has locations in downtown Apex and downtown Cary. About three years ago, Jeff Kromenhoek casually approached Jonathan Pierce with an intriguing proposition. “I remember Jeff saying, ‘Hey, what do you want to do with that old gas station on the corner?’” Pierce said. “He then started talking about the idea of a rooftop bar concept.” After purchasing the property, the new proprietors underwent an extensive process to renovate the building while maintaining its status on the historic registry. Architectural planning took eight months. The Town of Apex had to approve the construction of a second level, which is essentially floating atop the original building, albeit on reinforced steel and fortified concrete.

“We encountered a lot of hurdles, especially since a lot of the planning and construction happened during the pandemic,” Pierce said. “Ultimately, everything came together well.” Endeavoring to stay true to the roots of the classic service station, the owners commissioned local artists Mark “Bash” Hill and his wife, Lola Hill, who specialize in repurposing authentic vintage cars, parts, and signs from the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. On the rooftop patio sits a prominently positioned 1957 Chevy 3000 series cabover truck converted into a booth. Elsewhere, Ford Model A axles have been custom fabricated into beer taps. Antique oil cans now serve as light fixtures throughout TapStation. Timeworn signs fill the walls, while old-fashioned gas pump handles serve as faucets in the restrooms. Hillsborough-based artist Max Dowdle painted eye-catching murals on the building’s walls. “To be able to be part of such a wonderful project as TapStation was pleasing on an artistic, as well as a broadly aesthetic, level,” Dowdle said. “I was immensely pleased to add so much life and dynamic color through the use of paint.” TapStation’s ultra-casual environment beckons guests to relax, hang out, and have a great time. And there’s plenty of room for a crowd. “We have space for about 400 people,” said Meredith Kromenhoek. “We want to be a fun gathering place, and providing a rooftop dining experience is something new and different for Apex.” Locals are finding much to like here, not the least of which is an impressive offering of craft beer and quality bourbon. “Many of the beers are from Mason Jar Lager Company, but a lot are being made on-site,” Pierce said. “We also have at least 60 varieties of curated bourbons.” As for the food, elevated shareable appetizers abound. We strongly suggest you select several for the table, especially if you have hungry kids in tow. The wildly popular

Or go with Fancy, which involves Gouda cheese, lemon-kissed arugula, red onion, and truffle aioli. There are half a dozen different smash-style burgers, including the topselling All-American with cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, diced onions, and a signature comeback sauce. ketchup. You’ll be glad for the roll of paper towels at the center of the table so you can wipe your chin often. Oversized all-beef hotdogs also vie for consideration. For a straightforward option, choose the Carolina dog with kickin’ mustard, chili, and coleslaw or the Slum dog with bacon, beer cheese, onions, and chili. More adventurous possibilities include the Chicago dog with a fried pickle spear and sport peppers, or the jalapeño-stuffed Popper dog wrapped in applewood bacon and crowned with beer cheese sauce and ranch spread.

Bratwurst fans will appreciate the Korean slaw brat simmered in Holt & Hops beer and served with kimchi, Asian slaw, kickin’ mustard, and kickin’ ketchup. The Hawaiian brat features grilled pineapple-mango salsa, fresh jalapenos, avocado slices, kickin’ mustard, and cilantro. For a first-rate artisanal grilled cheese sandwich, be sure to order the Figgy Piggy with Applewood-smoked bacon, goat and provolone cheese, arugula, and house-made fig jam on sourdough. Even the classic grilled cheese contains a twist: It’s made with cheddar cheese and cream cheese. In the mood for a salad? Available in “half tank” and “full tank” versions, you’ll get your fill with any of the five tempting selections. The Green Goddess Cobb features three types of greens topped with grilled chicken, grape tomatoes, bacon, boiled egg, feta, pickled onions, and Holt & Hops IPA-roasted spent grain. dressing. And don’t ignore the simple goodness of the beet and goat cheese arugula salad with lemon-honey vinaigrette. “We wanted our salads to stand out,” Pierce says. “People may be surprised to see that a burger place has such good salads.” For dessert, lean toward an adult milkshake like the bourbon vanilla with salted bourbon caramel or a house root beer float. There’s also apple pie egg rolls or funnel cake with powdered sugar. “Funnel cake just feels nostalgic,” said Meredith Kromenhoek. “It goes well with the gas station theme.” When you go, don’t be surprised if the parking lot is completely full. Additional spaces are accessible on both sides of Salem Street and also at nearby Apex First Baptist Church (except Sunday mornings). TapStation is open Tuesday through Sunday with continuous service for lunch and dinner. Kölsch

WRITTEN BY DATHAN KAZSUK | PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN

from White Street Brewing Company

WITH SUMMER IN FULL SWING, what better time to enjoy a nice cold, refreshing beer? In this episode of Liquid Assets, we head over to Wake Forest for an award-winning Kölsch from White Street Brewing Company. Although the Kölsch wasn’t the brewery’s first beer brewed — it was actually the Scottish — the Kölsch quickly became one of the brewery’s best sellers. Brewed with Pilsner malts imported from Germany, this refreshing beer gets its dry and fruity finish from characteristics found in a specific yeast strain that originated in Köln, Germany, the birthplace of Kölsch. White Street’s Kölsch has a subtle cracker malt flavor and slight hints of apple on the nose. In 2014, the Kölsch won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup, and the rest is history for the brewery. Today, this perfect

beer that pays tribute to Köln Biergarten traditions can be found at your local bottle shops and grocery stores. In Germany, brewers and drinkers alike often add fruit juices or lemonade to their Kölsch, depending on the season. White Street Brewing Company is building on those traditions by infusing their Kölsch with fruit flavors in their Fruitfinity series. Last winter, the brewery started with a blend of pomegranate and cranberry, which added a nice tartness to the beer.

And now, with the warmer weather, the brewery's latest version of Fruitfinity is its Tangerine Kölsch. This beer is a blend of tangerine and pineapple, bringing a very tropical and citrusy wave of bliss. According to White Street Key Accounts Manager Will Haddock, the beer tastes like a mimosa in a can. And that’s not all. This summer, also look for their Key Lime Kölsch, which Haddock says “is super crisp, tangy, and refreshing. It's a great beer to battle those hot, heavy days.”
