ear Reader, We are in the middle of Summer and, as in all issues, we have reserved for you a selection of the Design Trends to follow this season. This time we opted for a series of colours that don't leave anyone dissatisfied: there is something for all tastes! From the strong colours of yellow and red to the lighter shades of green to the basic ones like beige and white. And for all handicraft fans, there are Special Stories from Portuguese companies that have distinguished themselves for their passion for creating unique products: where art meets design. On the other hand, let's not neglect the strong moment of social unease that we continue to live. This is the reason why we have tried to select projects that bring us closer to Nature in order to be able to experience this period of fragility to the fullest. Whether it's a hotel in the middle of the mountains or a lake house or a residence with ocean views - each project is aimed at inspiring us to spend more time outdoors, in close contact with the environment around us. That said, go out and enjoy nature, with this edition!

asis Lanz Beach Mate, located in Costa Teguise, is one of Lanzarote’s most attractive tourist destinations. It is the ideal place to relax and disconnect, and also do sports, have fun and enjoy. On a plot in a rectangular shape, small white constructions are located and grouped generating two central spaces in its interior in which the outdoor interrelation environments are developed. developed. Two swimming pools, all outdoor and heated, are surrounded by large, well-kept gardens dotted with palm trees. To strengthen the unity of the entire complex, Zooco estudio cleaned the ornaments and decorative elements that generated a disorganized and confusing image. It has chosen for the existing white color as a base, and blue for all exterior carpentry and enclosures, as well as the use of glass, basalt and bamboo, generating a very harmonious set with the environment, elegant and captivating.
62 | G&G _ Magazine
In the central northwest area, there is a building on the ground floor, which has been completely renovated and houses the hotel reception, a sales room, the gym and a service area with laundry, and spaces dedicated to hotel staff. In this building, a neutral base is also committed, on which large wooden slat furniture is developed. This piece collects and embraces different uses such as the reception desk, the back office, toilets, offices and living areas.
In the southeast area, a new basaltic stone building has been built, a pool bar where people can taste the exclusive food selection and delicious cocktails. It is characterized by large bamboo pergolas at different heights, which generate outdoor spaces protected from the sun. 64 | G&G _ Magazine
The small buildings, of two and three heights, house the accommodation units, with various typologies, double rooms with lounge, studios, and apartments with kitchen. All units have been reformed, following the same criteria regardless of the type. A palette of soft colors is used: white, beige, gray, wood, enhanced with touches of blue, both in the carpentry and in the ceramic elements. A common resource is repeated throughout the complex. The use of a lattice generated with various materials, which is represented inside the rooms, and in the glass door of access to the bathroom, as well as on the outside of the complex, in blue metallic. Trendy, cool and dynamic, the Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel designed by Studio Marco Piva is an example of groundbreaking innovative luxury design with pioneering concepts, including an open space reception, concierge services, spaciousness and brightness rooms with specific design. Photography by Andrea Martiradonna
S
tudio Marco Piva designed the intervention of the Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel with the purpose of creating a contemporary product albeit complying with some traditional standards. Indeed, the challenge was to uncover the original building, which had been reshaped over the years, clean it up and recover some original architectural elements. Matter is paramount and creates perceptively surprising spaces, giving them a specific weight. Stone and marble recall the monumental nature of Rome, whereas bronze was chosen as a reference to the huge hinges on the Pantheon entrance door. A special led lighting system frames the entire ground floor area geometrically, recalling the compositional principles classic architecture is based on. Here, a perspective of bronze arches and white gypsum vaults, Sahara Noir stoneware floors, welcomes the guest when entering the hotel. Reception and lobby desks are sculptural Calacatta-gold marble monoliths that seem to float in a shiny black lake.

72 | G&G _ Magazine
On the sixth floor, the hotel presents the Divinity Restaurant and, on the other side of the building, the Divinity Terrace Lounge Bar. Divinity Restaurant is a space that evokes the seven planetary divinities, elegant and pure marble and metals, and a view over the eternal city that is simply enchanting. The sleek lines of the restaurant and comfortable outdoor sofas make this the ideal space for business or pleasure, with a view that will quite simply take your breath away. While Divinity Terrace Lounge Bar recalls the seven planetary gods the Pantheon is consecrated to, celebrated with dedicated cocktails. The materials replicate those used in the common areas. Also here, light is created by the architectural shapes, while some elegant design chandeliers become iconic items characterising the scenes of some common areas.
The 79 sunny and spacious rooms, arranged in five floors, have a contemporary design with soft leather-covered paneling along all walls. Studio Marco Piva has developed an intense variation of colours, giving each of the five floors a specific identity, through different chromatic choices. The idea was to create mini-apartments with the functionalities and services of a luxury hotel. From this point of view, The Pantheon - Iconic Rome Hotel aims to make guests feel as if they are living in an elegant, noble Roman palace, making the most not to look like an

accommodating facility. Wardrobes have been designed as minimum, independent units, aggregated in vertical blocks standing on a common base, like columns on a single pedestal. In the bathrooms, emphasis is laid on Roman classicism. The grandeur of red Lepanto marble, combined with the transparency of glass and the materiality of stoneware, recalls the traditional stone roughness “worked by time, thus outlining a space that recalls the stone decorations of the nearby Pantheon and, in the mirror, its luminous oculus.
In the suites, the wardrobe system offers specialised units like frigo-bar, wine cellar, tea and coffee corner, safe and lastly, fitted into special glass cases, a collection of artworks designed by Marco Piva and taken, at style level, from the Pantheon. The artworks tell a more complete, harmonic story of the hotel, going from architecture to interiors and then on to design and art items. Reference to the outside continues in other representative room elements, like the central ceiling light: it recalls (with its graphics) the geometry of the “temple of all gods dome and, together with the adjustable, dimmable appliques on the brass headboard contributes to create a perfect dualism between matter and light. LANDSCAPE MAPA Architects presented Sacromonte Landscape Hotel in Maldonado, a city in southeastern Uruguay. This new structure substitutes the concept of contiguous rooms with exclusive cabins scattered through the landscape, but at the same time with the comfort and sophistication of urban hotels. Photography by Leonardo Finotti & Tali Kimelman
S
acromonte Landscape Hotel is an invitation to approach the world of fine wines in a remote natural setting, where sophistication and the rudimentary coexist in a new experience of the landscape. The hotel is nestled in the privileged location of the wild sierras of eastern Uruguay. At an equal distance between Punta del Este, José Ignacio and Pueblo Garzón, it is a unique ecosystem to be enjoyed with a singular spirit. Nature, production, infrastructure and the palpable energy of the site configure a field of stimuli to be discovered; a field of experiences. In this idyllic landscape, young vineyards adapted to the unique characteristics of its soil, interact with a hill from which the entire spot may be observed, with its lush grasslands, natural spring water reservoirs and several streams that run through the valley densely surrounded by pristine vegetation. It is the contemporary explorer who will rewrite its own script, costarring the landscape while walking through a wide range of scenarios. Besides, the structure will be part of a young constellation of small Uruguayan wineries of recent international recognition as producers of small quantities of premium wines. A unique feature of Sacromonte’s vineyards is the terroir, a result of its location in the wild sierras of Maldonado, with steep hillsides facing north and its rocky soils, rich in mica schist and granite.

The hotel includes 13 cabins (4 shelters and 9 landscape shelters) reachable through winding paths that replace the corridors. Here, a network of elements that amplify the experience of the landscape is in place, intended to enhance unexplored spots: an open chapel among the vineyards and paths, trails and tracks activated by programs for the enjoyment of wine, culture and art. This structure is a sustainable venture, which includes the environmental dimension in all its decisions. Prefab buildings, low-emissivity glass, living roofs, the use of local materials for onsite works, an organic vegetable garden, electric cars for transport, renewable energy, the rational use of fertilizers, the use of spring waters and the eco-friendly wastewater treatment system are a few of the strategies that make the hotel a field of harmoniously coexisting events. 82 | G&G _ Magazine
The cabins give preference to constructive simplicity and the efficient use of materials thanks to the modular metal structure, a blend of steel framing and light steel framing. Finishing is simple and expressive. Materials are used in harmony with their nature. In sharp contrast, the walls supporting the prefab modules are built onsite with local stones and take diverse organic shapes adapted to each placement. Circular pools, composing a new sensory experience of the landscape, complement them. The faรงades od the cabins are composed by a sheet of one-way mirror, covering the cabin with an almost magical effect, creating a tense limit between both the camouflage and the rhythm of nature and the unreal sheen of technology and modern times.
The space is organized in a sequence of longitudinal layers of different thicknesses, between which daily life develops. The rear plane of the cabins is composed by piles of wood logs, reminiscent of woodpiles typical of lifestyles in natural settings. The following layer hosts the wet areas such as the bathroom and the kitchen, a fireplace and a reading nook ideal for just reading or sleeping a siesta, sheltered by the landscape. Separated by a wood plane, follows the main space containing the bedroom, living and dining room, which opens fully onto the landscape it is inserted in and of which it is an integral part. Cultural Experimentation Helga Faletti Studio presents Combo Torino: the new generation hostel for travellers and for Turin people who reinvents the features of low cost hospitality.
86 | G&G _ Magazine
"The opening of Turin is a stage important because it completes the first phase of the project. With Venice, Milan and Turin we start to have a widespread presence in the area and we have the ambition to become the first chain of 100% Italian hostels, with 5 new locations in the next 3 years." - Roberto Franchi, CEO of Combo 88 | G&G _ Magazine
After the opening in Venice and Milan, Combo arrives in Turin, near Porta Palazzo, with its vision to be an "open" place capable of welcoming with simplicity and informality. Someone presents a book, someone else exposes his project, others drink coffee. There are those who are stop for a lunch, a drink at the end of the day or someone who works with his laptop while enjoying a snack. Meanwhile, upstairs, you are staying in private or shared functional rooms. All at the same time. Combo is a place of multiplicity, in the Turin district that more than any other, it’s a kaleidoscope of coexistence and energy. Combo was born in the ex-fire station, in a complex that dates to 1883, abandoned for more than 20 years. It has been redesigned thanks to the work of architect Ole Sondresen and interior
designer Helga Faletti with an accurate and conscious recovery intervention. Soul and beating heart of Combo is the large ground floor with its 2,500 square meters of interior and exterior. Here, the silos-shaped reception recalls the water accumulators, and the self check-in stations, placed on long poles, tell the public the story of the former barracks. Also on the ground floor, there is Atlas Room, a large soundproofed room characterized by the original rough walls, overlooking the internal courtyard and equipped with all audio / video technologies, it’s the ideal space to organize projections, events and private parties. In the central area, long picnic tables for snacks, a large central stage and the "tub" to host concerts and performances by local and international artists.
"Porta Palazzo was an inspiration for the entire Combo project with its authenticity, contamination and magic." - Michele Denegri, founder of the project
90 | G&G _ Magazine
Combo Torino is also a place for breakfast at the bar, lunch/dinner with a cuisine inspired by the extraordinary variety of Porta Palazzo, or simply a coffee or a glass of wine. Here, the environment is characterized by unique furnishings: large common tables in solid Italian
wood, comfortable sofas covered in cotton and linen coated in liquid rubber and original rocking chairs in recycled plastic. Particular attention was given to the soundproofing of the rooms, guaranteed by one flooring made with recycled tires and sound-absorbing panels.
The first and second floors of the building are intended for the reception of travelers and have private and shared rooms, from 2 to 7 beds. Each room is equipped with air conditioning, free wi-fi and lockers for storing your belongings personal. All furnishings are custom made based on original designs and are produced by Piedmontese artisans who have recovered ancient processes adapting them to one contemporary need. A job started with the careful selection of noble materials to be modeled to create a furniture that, thanks to the concept of "adaptive reuse" and to a careful sensitivity to reduction of the environmental impact, recreates in the spaces what Combo is in the ideas: a place connected to the surrounding area. Besides, the beds reflect the identity of Combo: the platforms

in solid oak wood - floating between the walls they create real personal spaces in which to sleep, relax, read or work. Individual lights, USB sockets, and room divider curtains guarantee the privacy of your niche. Helga Faletti chosen the red for the rooms - one of the dominant colors that wants to recall on one hand the old identity of the building and on the other create a vital and energetic space. The shared rooms are joined by double rooms and suites, the latter characterized by unique details: some on two levels with mezzanine, others with private balconies and still others that they recreate real Japanese tatami rooms. All with large lounge spaces and views of the square. Address: Corso Regina Margherita, 128, 10152 Turin (Italy)
"It'll be a house always open to all those who live and want to discover the neighborhood and the link with the Piazza will create the true energy of Combo."

he hotel is located in the largest shopping mall in the Nordics, the Mall of Tripla: it’s a shopping centre, an entertainment centre, a train station, and the home and workplace of thousands of people. The idea was to create a hotel that was literally the opposite of the hustle and bustle of its busy surroundings. Fyra set out to tackle the challenge together with the design agency Werklig. The strategy centred on the idea of creating a hotel that, despite its massive proportions, was actually human-sized at heart. The result was a stylish and timeless hotel built on a sense of community and designed to feel like its own village. The hotel lobby opens up into the mall with a bar and cafe where people can taste dishes made by organic products, with a wide range of different diets. 96 | G&G _ Magazine
The sustainable development was part of the design process from the start. Both the materials used, and the style choices made have to stand the test of time. The hotel has no unnecessary elements at all. The hotel embodies modern Scandinavian design, which centres around light and light colours. Homage was paid to the environment of Pasila by using concrete, and inspiration was also drawn from the concept of grids. This hotel aimed to use new solutions to solve some of the most typical hotel problems, while also questioning the conventions of hotel design. The result is a range of new furniture solutions and floor plans, as well as new technical solutions designed to handle high volume and consumption. Cooperation with a local artists’ collective and Finnish villages enhanced the village-like feel. 98 | G&G _ Magazine

The communal and homey feel extends from the public spaces all the way to the rooms. With 430 rooms, the Hotel Tripla is definitely large for Finland, but it doesn’t feel at all like a big hotel. The rooms are decorated simply and elegantly with natural colours and materials, offering to the clients a place for rest and relaxation. Thanks to the large windows that extend right down to the floor, the rooms give an awe-inspiring view of the Helsinki cityscape. The shining diamond of the hotel, the 66 m2 Sancy suite with a sauna, is located in the corner of the hotel’s 17th floor and has an amazing, panoramic view stretching out as far as the horizon. The suite’s decoration has taken inspiration from the world’s seventh largest diamond, “Le Grand Sancy”. The diamond belonged to Aurora Karamzin, a notable character in Pasila in the 19th century. The luxuriously soft
materials used for the decor, which reflect the colour tones of this exceptional diamond, as well as the carefully designed and refined details guarantee you an unforgettable experience. Address: Fredikanterassi 1B,00520 - Helsinki (Finland)

Set in the award-winning Clifton Terraces apartments on Victoria Road, Cape Town, SAOTA projected a five-story penthouse of which the interiors and dĂŠcor have been taken care of ARCC and OKHA. Photography by Adam Letch & Niel Vosloo 114 | G&G _ Magazine
“What started out as a normal interior architecture brief quickly evolved into my passion project with a focus on coupling global design and South African art and craftsmanship.”

eep overhangs and a restrained natural palette of materials blend into the beautiful natural surroundings while landscaped terraces on each level ensure that the building will settle even more effectively into its environment over time. The building mimics the existing contours of the site, sensitively ensuring that the views from neighbouring sites were unaffected or even improved. The interior décor and interior architecture has stylistic connections to the style modern movement of the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 30s. Each apartment effortlessly binds state-of-the-art technologies into the fabric of its functionality and existence with 24/7 security, services, and amenities that afford a lock-up-and-go lifestyle for summer or all-year-round living. Through the seamlessly integrated home automation system, almost any aspect of the villa can be remotely controlled and personalized, including the lift, pool and Wi-Fi. The client felt it was a natural choice to work with ARRCC and OKHA on reimagining South Villa’s interior architecture and interior design respectively. Together with SAOTA, these three companies are the leaders in their own rights and as a group, their skills and strengths are even further compounded.

Entering Clifton Terraces via its stone-clad reception area, a private lift ascends six levels to the penthouse and opens to a hallway featuring a full panel of Fantasy marble before reaching the private lobby of the penthouse. Here, a provocative layering of oak and brass inlay
accents, together with charcoal grey ribbed timber skirting converge in a backlit slab of Verde Fume Onice Onyx beneath a shadow skylight and LED-lit walls. Once out of the lift, a classic clad steel mesh door leads into a living area.

“Classical wall detailing has been given new life with a contemporary color pallet introducing moody greys, deep blues and textured green finishes.” - Jon Case, ARRCC director
The double volume living area features warm bronze and glass installations such as the feature staircase and, in turn, opens onto a 150 sqm terrace that boasts a raised rectangular heated pool offering 360-degree, year-round views of Clifton and Table Mountain. The penthouse doubles as a private art gallery, curated by OKHA in collaboration with the client and features works from galleries such as SMAC, What If the World and Southern Guild. Featured artists include the likes of Chris Soal, Galia Gluckman, Michele Mathison, Alexandra
Karakashian, Mongezi Ncaphayi, Pierre Vermeulen, Chuma Maweni and Atang Tshikare. There is a broad range of custom-designed OKHA furniture pieces featured in key areas throughout the apartment; from the master bedroom and the dining room to the formal lounge and lobby. Stand-out pieces include the double trapezoidshaped Morpheus Dining Table and the ViA console in the lobby. Taking their cue from the architecture, OKHA’s emphasis was intentionally placed on the power of form, mass and materiality.
“The emotive tension between colours, materials, tactility, forms, and spaces symbiotically contribute to the overall design narrative.

In the living room, the highlight is the Tectra coffee table by OKHA, which Court designed as a modular table that can be separated into three standalone tables and is made from blackened mild steel tube-shaped legs and polished Calcatta Vagli marble.
“The character of the furnishings throughout isn’t achieved through ornamentation but in keeping with the principles of style modern, using clear articulation, with scale playing an important role.”
ARRCC used a classic ribbed wall paneling in a rich dark green in the master bedroom which, together with wooden flooring, echo the Cape pines that frame the windows facing Camps Bay. The custom bed with multi-panelled headboard in Oak and French cane, broad, low armchair in rich green velvet and marble-topped timber side tables are all custom-made by OKHA. The en-suite 124 | G&G _ Magazine
master bathroom, where French cane bronze mirrors and oak are combined with wall-to-wall slabs of Bianco Carrara marble, provides a vibrant backdrop to the dramatic and moody master bedroom. SAOTA, ARRCC and OKHA have matched luxury with maturity and sophistication in a statement that enriches the conversation about the possibilities of contemporary design.

pair of preexisting galleries: the first one with a shed covered in soot, barely noticeable the color of the clay roof tiles, and the second one covered with metal sheets was almost unable to sustain – were the initial phrase in the interview with the owners of the property. The remain land was full of undergrowth and three trees we knew from the beginning that were going to play an important part for the distribution of the project. A Ramón tree (brosinum alicastrum) and a Pixoy (guazuma
ulmifolia) configurate the exterior space of the terrace with the swimming pool. While an enormous Ceiba tree, because of its size, looks like the protective mother of the household within the proportion of the site. The facade rehabilitation that protects the roof suggests the principal entrance, where there are the living room and lobby of the house with the intention of highlighting the main character of the original construction and embrace an adequate use of the project. A recess before arriving to the common use areas conformed by a small central garden the helps the service spaces become unnoticed.
The new extensions of the house like the kitchen and dinning room were conceived with simple volumes, always looking for the tectonic definition to complement and coexist with the preexisting building. 130 | G&G _ Magazine
All the new areas of this project were treated in a way to ensure the amplest uptake of light and air in the interior, meanwhile they preserve the monolithic appearance from the exterior in reference with the old building. With the intention of relating the ordered spaces of the project like ailes, terraces, exterior gardens and interior patios were directly connected all the rooms of the household, permitting the spatial continuity within them and with the exterior thanks to the large windows and terraces. The volume integrity of white cement in combination with wood and red pigmented cement reach a contrast between the whole materiality, giving the house an open and comfortable character. The result is an authentic project in which there has been respected the characteristic features of the building enhancing the tradition.

spiritual REFUGE Focused on the creation of space that reveals the human spirit and connects us to the world in which we live, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer designed the Hillside Sanctuary - a retreat inspired by a treasured stone and wood home lost to fire decades earlier in the San Juan Islands (Washington). Photography by Kevin Scott
O
n request of the owner of this property, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer projected the house with the aim to give its spirit new form in the Pacific Northwest. Taking inspiration from its remote site in the hills of Appalachia, the design team conceived of the project as a series of simple stone volumes growing naturally from their rocky surroundings. From that concept emerged a comfortable accommodation while offering a personal sanctuary for the owner. Taking full advantage of sweeping views of Puget Sound, the home is sited on a small plateau high on top of a steeply-sloping hillside. The view opportunity on one side and the road on the other suggested a stone plinth and stone wall to form the base and rear of the house. A pair of thick stone walls with fireplaces rising together within the home’s interior enhance the concept, separating the main level into public and private

realms and flanking a central stone staircase. A light-filled wood structure perches atop the low stone base, creating a nuanced sense of enclosure. A simple shed roof covering the pavilion tips low in front to protect from the southern summer sun while offering prime real estate to a photovoltaic array above. Winter light in turn penetrates deep into the main living spaces through a wall of glass running continuously across the building’s south elevation. Behind the wood pavilion and within the stone wall at the rear of the building are more utilitarian spaces. Protected by a smaller shed roof pitched in the opposite direction, the relative height difference between the wood pavilion and these secondary program elements allows consistent north light to flood into the primary living spaces via a series of clerestory windows, which also allow the release of warm air high on the leeward side of the structure.
The main entry occurs at the high side of the property. It offers ease of access to the project’s public spaces through a simple, full-height opening cut into the stone volume’s north elevation. A steel canopy gives it distinction, extending from interior to exterior. Once inside the view deck opposite the entry provides a very different experience. Extending the great room while cantilevering far above grade, it affords a view of Puget Sound that is as thrilling as it is beautiful.
138 | G&G _ Magazine
The dining room, another element extending from the stone tower, was conceived as a threesided glass object floating in a forest of trees. It presented multiple technical challenges. Two steel beams carry its entire weight and extend deep into the interior floor system to allow the room to cantilever. Floor-to-ceiling glass wraps 140 | G&G _ Magazine
the exterior with minimal interruption. Perhaps most challenging of all, though, was the need to preserve nearby trees; without them the room’s purpose would be defeated. With that in mind the team developed custom retaining walls capable of avoiding critical root zones, preserving trees located a few feet from the dining room.
142 | G&G _ Magazine
The lower level of the home plays host to its more private spaces. Two small bedrooms, a single shared bath, and modest utility spaces are all contained within the perimeter of the stone datum. At the exterior a concrete patio offers protected outdoor space below the dining room floating above. It provides a secondary entry as well as its own distinct view experience.

ocated not far from Costa Rican town Uvita, Atelier VIlla is nestled against a steep slope, the 26-metre-long prismatic object partially levitates over lush tropical vegetation. Looking outside, there is only the distant ocean or green hills as far as the eye can see, while the back wall facing the driveway is intentionally windowless to maintain privacy. The owner wished to have a place that merges with the surrounding nature, experiencing luxury and adventure at the same time. The architects from the Formafatal studio followed the client's assignment and were also inspired by the atmosphere and colorfulness of Central and South America.
The first and foremost priority is not only the idea of “erasing boundaries between interior and exterior” but also highlighting constructional simplicity and pure lines. Discreet wall colours in combination with the green roof allow the villa to really blend in with 148 | G&G _ Magazine
its surroundings. The ocean and jungle-oriented façades are fitted with large-size aluminum perforated sections which do not heat up in the sun and are rust-resistant. If pulled up, they double as canopies. The scale and pattern of perforation is different on each of the sections, thus creating an exciting play of light and shadow inside. The panels’ special coating is in the colour of COR-TEN. The full back wall is in charred timber cladding treated with Shou Sugi Ban, an old Japanese technique of weather- and ageproofing the wood. Disposition-wise, the villa possesses the same minimalistic spirit as its shape suggests. The utility and storage rooms, bathrooms and the kitchen are placed along the back wall. The layout of the rest of the house is very open; the boundaries between the inside and the outside world are gone and the whole space seems like a roofed terrace. Lightweight sliding partition walls may serve as a tool to create private zones and shake the space up as needed. In additional, the patio reveals an infinity pool, partly roofed and therefore protected from the scorching sun.

The whole interior is in warm, earthy tones of natural materials. All of the furnishings, apart from the lounge and dining chairs, are tailor-designed for this villa and custom-made. Commissioned in the area, the major part of the furniture was made with the help of local craftsmen. Some components were custom-made in the Czech Republic and transported to the site.
As for lighting, the architects decided to opt for the renowned Czech glass-making company Bomma and their Shibari lights that go hand in hand with the overall tropical feel of the interiors.

FADD Studio projected a house grounded by simplicity, clean lines and solid colour blocks for a couple and their two daughters in Gurgaon, India. Photography by Gokul Rao Kadam
T
he apartment is in an apartment complex in a residential area, within a gated community There are four bedrooms, a study, a family room and a plush dining/living space with a lovely double height giving volume to the whole space. The clients wanted this house to have a modern and minimalistic look and feel. For this, FADD Studio was deeply inspired by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret – their deep sienna passage of the Villa La Roche, their Chandigarh series and the general polychromatic feel of some of their work. The purist canvases of Corbusier led to a path of somber colours for the shell. Additionally, a few bold Japanese elements used to create a little drama. At the entrance there is a simple disc in wood to emulate an eclipse just above the Chandigarh bench. This completed the Zen-meets-midcentury modern look and gave the foyer a burst of life. While for the whole home, FADD Studio opted cement finishes and surprisingly the clients were very open to this direction. The marble floor needed covering so poured cement was not only a cost-effective solution but also one that gave a large palette of colours to choose from. Grey would be too common, so the designers decided to go with a deep, unsaturated rust/sienna colour for the floor and would bring in cool grey/green in other areas to off set its warmth. This was a unique choice in colour for the floor and the vision to pair it with grey and green made it a big success. In the grey shell with the rust floor, FADD Studio made the connecting passage a refreshing leaf green to create a colour block akin to Villa La Roche. To preserve this serene and sober experience, the designers intentionally decided to have natural browns and greens in terms of fabrics. These would complement the woven midcentury modern furniture spread across the house. In addition, the designers wanted to bring in bold silhouettes and some glossy texture to enhance and contrast the background respectively. So, without disturbing the
156 | G&G _ Magazine
understated look of the home, they used a minimalist approach while deciding the style of the central chandelier. It took something large but something that didn’t distract from the overall textural quality of the double height space. The choice was easy with the larger than life wire frame chandelier. The clients loved its simplicity because it not only filled the volume of the double height, but its simple construction of the elegant black outline also showed off at the grey that it is set against. A similar approach was taken for the dining room light. A black wire begins at the wall, hinges on to the ceiling and drops a simple black shade to softly illuminate the table. Less is more and it was all that was needed with this set up.
In the family room, FADD Studio chose a blend of a grey-blue sofa from Gervasoni with neutral customized chairs and coffee table from Magari. While the lovely floor lamps made out of cane add softness to area that is styled with blues and browns. Next to this room, there is the study with a midcentury modern furniture like chairs in a green and mustard leather customized from Magar and study tables against a sage green wall. Here FADD Studio brought in some colour with the hanging light in the corner.
158 | G&G _ Magazine
160 | G&G _ Magazine
The bedrooms have a more intimate feel especially those of the daughters. The first room is downstairs, here FADD Studio used different colours in putty finish and created a geometric background to be the backdrop for a soft lilac bed from Magari. In the other daughter’s upper room, rusts, greys and olives adorn this room with a floral abstraction hand painted by a local artist. The guest room presents the light colours with a
simple striped bed in neutrals and closet in a sage laminate. To attain more personal and intimate lighting, the designers decided to go with materials that create some drama and shadows: metal and paper lights in the two daughters rooms to contrast the solid bed upholstery, and wooden slated shades in the guest room to work with the stripes of the bed fabric.
The master room has an elegant grid done in grooved putty. The furniture is a mix of imported brands and locally customised. The natural colours and materials of the furniture pieces stand out vibrantly against the textured grey walls of the house giving the otherwise serious shell a dash of drama. Especially an antique red chests brings in some fire against the earthy palette.
162 | G&G _ Magazine
There is also a little reading corner with an olive cane and lamp from Purple Turtle. To accentuate and highlight the space, metallic elements such as a copper border on the bedroom doors and stone and paper lights were used to contrast the cane headboard. In all, this home exudes a peaceful and understated vibe, representing the client’s personality in just the right way.

panning 84,300 square metres, the Opus was designed as two separate towers that coalesce into a singular whole—taking the form of a cube. The cube has been ‘eroded’ in its centre, creating a free-form void that is an important volume of the design in its own right. The two halves of the building on either side of the void are linked by a four-storey atrium at ground level and also connected by an asymmetric 38-metre-wide, three-storey bridge 71 metres above the ground. The cube’s double-glazed insulating façades incorporate a UV coating and a mirrored frit pattern to reduce solar gain. Applied around the entire building, this dotted frit patterning 166 | G&G _ Magazine
emphasizes the clarity of the building’s orthogonal form, while at the same time, dissolving its volume through the continuous play of light varying between everchanging reflections and transparency.
“The precise orthogonal geometries of the Opus’ elemental glass cube contrast dramatically with the fluidity of the eight-storey void at its centre.” - Christos Passas, project director at Zaha Hadid Architects
The void’s 6,000 square metre façade is created from 4,300 individual units of flat, single-curved or double-curved glass. The high-efficiency glazing units are comprised of 8mm Low-E glass (coated on the inside), a 16mm cavity between the panes and 2 layers of 6mm clear glass with a 1.52mm PVB resin laminate. This curved façade was designed using digital 3D modelling that also identified specific zones which required tempered glass. During the day, the cube’s façade reflects the sky, the sun and the surrounding city; whilst at night, the void is illuminated by a dynamic light installation of individually controllable LEDs within each glass panel.

Furniture by Zaha Hadid Design is installed throughout the hotel, including the ‘Petalinas’ sofas and ‘Ottomans’ pods in the lobby that are fabricated from materials ensuring a long lifecycle and its components can be recycled. The ‘Opus’ beds in each bedroom while the ‘Work & Play’ combination sofa with desk are installed in the suites. The hotel’s bedrooms also incorporate the ‘Vitae’ bathroom collection, designed by Hadid in 2015 for Noken Porcelanosa, continuing her fluid architectural language throughout the hotel’s interiors. The ME Dubai hotel incorporates 74 rooms and 19 suites, while the Opus building also houses offices floors, serviced residences and restaurants, cafes and bars including ROKA, the contemporary Japanese robatayaki restaurant and the MAINE Land Brasserie. Sensors throughout the Opus automatically adjust the ventilation and lighting according to occupancy to conserve energy while ME Dubai follows Meliá Hotels International initiatives for sustainable practices. Hotel guests will receive stainless-steel water bottles to use during their 170 | G&G _ Magazine

Located in an inner city suburb of Melbourne, k20 Architecture projected Knox Children and Family Centre Bayswater, or Sunflower - an early learning childcare centre and maternal community hub facility, through a collaborative approach involving also the client and key stakeholders.

DESIGN
The existing late 1970's brown-brick building has been extensively remodeled and refurbished over the years and now the present structure is past its use–by–date. k20 Architecture is regularly involved in remodeling, refurbishing and modernising aged buildings however in this case the fabric and structure of the building was beyond repair. In designing a new facility, k20 Architecture were also able to design a new premise that would utilise double the capacity of the site and provide greater services from the one location. The new centre is perfectly positioned at the very centre of the local community, adjacent to a reserve, schools, a bowling club and children’s playground and has been designed to be off grid with a 100 years life cycle, setting a new standard for sustainable design. The challenge of the site was the spatial footprint that presented as a long narrow D with east/west orientation. To achieve sustainable outcomes a northerly aspect is preferred, and k20 Architecture’s solution was to find a way to reorganise the use of the site. The result is a design that ‘bends’ the program of the building to predominantly face north to ‘track the sun’ emulating the movements of a sunflower plant. The design of the project is sympathetic to the surrounding suburban landscape of brown brick homes that are older in style and Sunflower harmoniously intersects with these existing 174 | G&G _ Magazine
buildings. The palette of materials combines brick that will be used on the façade of the building’s curved front to create a dynamic visual effect. There are boxed framed windows and the roofs are pitched to frame the buildings reinterpreting the idea of the suburban home. The project consists of two buildings. The first houses the state-of-the-art children’s early learning spaces and the second will accommodate the maternal healthcare and playgroups program, with both buildings providing their own internal well-secured outdoor areas that are directly accessed off the learning spaces. While each building will function independently, both will share a welcoming sense of arrival, adopting universal access design principles. The buildings will be easily recognised and visible from the street connecting this community facility to its community and people.
k20 Architecture has designed the building to be transparent, open and to create a feeling of warmth and comfort. The main entrance is to be clad in timber and at 2.4metres high offers space but a certain intimacy that will not overwhelm the children as they move through. The entrance also features eastfacing coloured glass that will create a kaleidoscope of colour in the morning as the occupants arrive. k20 Architecture values the importance of early learning and the design of Sunflower will offer a feeling of connectivity through volume, space and colour that extends throughout the facility.
The brief from Council required k20 Architecture to create not only a central activity hub of approximately 1300-square-metres in size but, most importantly, to establish a facility that would

be relevant and appropriate for the community’s needs in 100 years. Embracing this idea, k20 Architecture has created a design that is flexible and re-adaptive for future re-use as required.

As with all k20 Architecture’s designs, the emphasis for this project is to use local, handmade product. k20 Architecture seeks goods and services crafted by local trades and will aim to source materials and devise construction methodology supported by the local community for the project. The building will feature high levels of sustainability initiatives such as the capacity to go off-grid in the future and simple cost-effective ideas such as the use of ProctorWrap to ensure that the building will be well insulated and thermally responsive. Off-the-shelf products and materials will also feature in this project, together with a more lowtech approach to delivery with simple construction methods allowing ideas to be realised rather than imagined. The project has also been designed for neutral consumption of electricity and water which will commence from day one of operation. As k20 Architecture’s director Anthony U is Green star accredited, and k20 Architecture is a carbon neutral practice, a collaboration with Organica for this project will secure the very best sustainable initiatives and outcomes for the future.
The internal spaces of the facility will feature human-centred design initiatives that are especially important in the advancement of children’s learning and development. Playgrounds will be designed by early learning specialists and 180 | G&G _ Magazine
the interiors have been created to secure a strong connection and relationship with the outside. k20 Architecture looks forward to delivering Sunflower as an eco-centric children’s and community activity hub for the Knox community.
The interior includes earthy colour tones with carefully articulated accents of colour that will provide an important backdrop for the children’s artwork. Rather than create fashionable and ‘for the moment’ interiors, k20 Architecture has conceived a timeless design with a limited palette of materials that includes recycled timbers.

NEW HOPE DnA_ Design and Architecture projected Dushan Leisure Center located in the east of China, precisely in Songyang County, with the aim of helping the local economy. Photography by Wang Ziling

T
he new leisure center is located at the triangular wetland at the foot of Dushan Mountain adjacent to the Songyin River, the mother river of Songyang County. Dushan Mountain is the most iconic landmark in the region, and the gateway to this county and its urban center. Over the years Songyang has remained as a traditional agricultural rural region with beautiful landscape and ancient villages and was often called as ‘The Last Hidden Land In Jiang Nan’. However, there are critical issues under this utopian image, like any other rural region in China. As young people move to the cities for employment, the villages become “hollow” with very few elder populations. Most rural village communities are in economic decline and losing faith in the village
future. The urgent need exists to establish a new hope for local communities. Dushan Leisure Center is one of the key tourism projects of the Songyin River Scenic District Development, including a visitor center, water sports facilities, and a gym for water sports athletes.

DnA_ Design and Architecture taken this project as the first meeting point of local residents and tourists in the county by considering the entire triangular harbor as a water park shared by both tourists and local communities. The architectural programs are organized through a spiral with the visitor facilities at the center and a gym at the far end, connected by an east-west walkway as a shortcut. A “C shape dike connects to the Songyin River will also become the passage for pedestrians, bicycles and tourism electric shuttles. The overall configuration provides an undulating walkway for above the harbor, with constantly changing views of the Mountain & Water.
The project adopts timber structure as natural material, low-carbon construction, and traditional special quality. Glass curtain walls with different gradient of translucency bring subtle shift on building faรงades as misty surfaces on the water. Layers of indoor and outdoor space create interplay of views, like the traditional Chinese landscape garden.

The meditation room on second floor is also a multi-function room. The opening on the roof casts the trace of sun on the floor with bronze
plates of different hours in the Chinese 24 solar terms, creating a dialogue with the nature and time.

PUBLIC ATELIER AND FUUZE HAVE EXPANDED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VŘESOVICE, ORIGINALLY A BAROQUE RECTORY, IN A SMALL MUNICIPALITY IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC.

W
hen the municipality of Vřesovice agreed with the Church on transferring the rectory and the parish estate to the municipal property, the Church wished that the village should not let the whole premises deteriorate but use it for a purpose. Therefore, since 2013 the main building of the rectory has been a primary school and two years later, a day care center with a kitchen and a dining room, which are also used by the primary school, was established on the ground floor of the two building wings. Public Atelir's task was to reconstruct another part of the buildings into two classrooms and two vocational ones. This was completed in the summer of 2019. The last part was the original gymnasium adjoining to the

baroque building, which is to be converted into a modern gym and two club rooms. At present, the project is waiting for a subsidy. The need for the project, or the need for reconstruction, arose due to a requirement to expand the capacity of the school capacity, to save the rapidly decaying roof trusses of the Baroque complex and rectify the unsatisfactory state of its inner courtyard. The whole complex was built gradually, its various parts serving different purposes. They have been preserved in different conditions. Similarly, its reconstruction proceeds gradually, according to the needs of the municipality, its financial resources and the condition of the individual parts of the complex. This diversity, both operational and technical, has therefore logically become the main starting point of the reconstruction project.
The historical parts are united by a classic plaster faรงade, a red roof of plain tiles, and copper plumbing elements. On the other hand, the simple cubic shape, smooth surface and distinctive colors characterize the new parts. Passages and interconnections of the buildings which were separated in the past, are accentuated. It brings playfulness to the complex not only with its colors, but also with new possibilities of operation and movement. Children are free to choose which entry to school and which color they will use.
The project proposal emphasized the interconnection of individual parts so that their historical value as a complex should be preserved and so that the users of the school and the day care center should feel comfortable and free to use all its parts. Both newly implemented and original historical elements are intertwined, but they are clearly distinguishable from one another. The project is strengthened by the interconnection of the existing classrooms in the rectory building and the new classrooms. 196 | G&G _ Magazine

In the past, the school economic facilities were situated on the ground floor of the rectory and the day care center on the ground floor in two additional wings. Reacting to that Public Atelier placed the main facility of the school on the first floor, which, among other things, brought an opportunity to save the valuable Baroque roof and to make use of the situating of the complex at the foot of the slope of the church hill. Thanks to that, the new classrooms have a spacious terrace with a grass area, from where it is possible to enjoy lessons with a view of the Church of St. Peter and Paul.
The new architectural elements not only improved the conditions for the children and teachers but also transformed their time spent at school into an experience of the space. The moment of playfulness and free movement has become important at school. What is fundamental is also the free space where children can move - the space where they make their own rules in order to relax from order and dictates.
