GRACE IN CHAOS: Unfolding Truth

6

KARLA KANTO The idea of creating beauty from chaos inspires my art. It is the proposition that contrast can be used not against us, but to enhance us. Darkness is needed to see light, chaos to recognize harmony, and noise to appreciate silence. It is through contrast that we recognize the reality, the truth, the intention in life.

Through my art, I try to express how we can appreciate and value what we might otherwise see as a mistake. The accidental, the random, and the flawed are not really random; there is a reason, even if we do not understand it. I mean to show hidden beauty, to help people see the unseen, to give voice to what we disregard and abandon. I perceive beauty in the passage of time, in the rusty and old, and even in decay. If you look close enough, there is beauty in the unexpected, the chaos, and also in what we consider broken.

My process includes distressing the material in order to manipulate it. I alter the constitution of the canvas emulating the imperfections, the deviations, and the uncertainty that life uses to challenge us. The idea is to coax the materials into metamorphosis; the more worn the materials are, the more beautiful they become. I use oil paint, pure pigment, and patina aging solutions in an unconventional way to reveal an unexpected aesthetic. I look for the change in the materials to reveal their beauty through colors, shadows, and reflexions. Everything in life can be transformed that way, depending on our perspective and interpretation. We have the ability to bring light to the darkness.

Our perspective changes the way we see the subject matter. Transformation is about working with what life brings us, to unfold the meaning of life as we rise above chaos. The beauty is not always obvious; we need to find it, and sometimes it is where we least expect it. Through my art, I wish to awaken people to unfold the grace in chaos.
