Once upon a time, in the far off land of Dozecaster lived dopey King Danum and his delightful daughter, Rose. Rose will not die but fall into the deepest of sleeps, only to be awoken by true love’s kiss... After last year’s smash-hit success, our latest Christmas treat will have a huge dose of magic and sparkle. Live music, beautiful costumes and classic panto comedy combine in this refreshing take on a fairytale favourite. A PUPPETRY CHRISTMAS TREAT
Pickled Image
Cuddle up around the fireside as Granddad shares his favourite festive stories. Reminisce about a special pair of Christmas pants, investigate the mystery of the snowflake necklace and listen carefully to the mischievous shenanigans of the Tomten; a feisty gnome who loves the chance to swap gossip with woodland creatures, and who might just be the reason Granddad can’t find his favourite tree decoration. Using puppetry and imaginative input from the audience Granddad weaves his own brand of heart-warming storytelling and festive cheer.

COMEDY DRAMA
The John Godber Company & Theatre Royal Wakefield By John Godber Performed by John Godber and Jane Thornton
Thursday 18 – Saturday 20 February In 1985 the miners were defeated, their families were torn apart and the media circus went home. But what happened next? John Godber’s epic new play follows ex-miner Harry and his wife Dot in the thirty years after the strike. Suddenly the two are thrown together with new battles to fight, and new jobs to hold down; from window cleaning in Wakefield to running a boarding house in Bridlington; but life would never be the same again. Fuelled with eye-watering honesty and true Yorkshire grit, this is an hilarious account of those whose jobs had been taken, and whose communities had been destroyed. It’s the story of how they fought back after being shafted! This extra special production is performed by the multi BAFTA winning partnership of John Godber and Jane Thornton. The pits may have gone, but the shifts are still seismic.

Tavaziva Dance
Tuesday 23 February From Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man to Carlos Acosta’s version for the Royal Ballet, Bizet’s Carmen continues to be popular with artists who are inspired by its rich and enduring resonance. In his most ambitious work to date Bawren Tavaziva reimagines the work in a modern twist of a classic tale. Set in an oil rich, military dictatorship in Equatorial Guinea, Tavaziva’s Africarmen follows the lives of a group of villagers, working tirelessly for a tyrannical gang master. As the story unfolds one woman is at the centre of a love affair that leads to an entanglement of desire, deceit and corruption with tragic consequences. Performed to music composed and arranged by Fayyaz Virji of the acclaimed Warriors International this synthesis of ballet, contemporary and African dance makes for a powerful choreographic language that speaks loud, without talking. A Northern Stage, Newcastle production Based on the novel Jack’s Return Home by Ted Lewis Adapted by Torben Betts
Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 April A dark and stylish new adaptation of the classic Newcastle-noir thriller. Jack Carter is back home for the first time in years. He’s back to bury a brother who hated him, in a town he swore he was never going to see again. He’s back to find out who killed his brother, to pay debts and settle scores. As the local underworld closes ranks, Jack’s bosses back in London find out that he has had his fingers in the till, and other places they shouldn’t have been. Jack plays a deadly game of cat and mouse as everyone tries to ‘get Carter’, unless he gets you first. Inspired by the classic noir of Raymond Chandler, by the freedom of Jazz and the coming of the 1960s, Ted Lewis’s novel is a classic of British crime fiction. Set in a hard and uncompromising world of 1960s Newcastle, rife with crime, sex, gambling and violence, this adaptation tells the story made famous in Mike Hodge’s film starring Michael Caine in the lead role. #GetCarter

Birdsong Productions in association with Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre By William Nicholson
Tuesday 26 – Saturday 30 April CS Lewis was comfortable when he started his teaching post at Oxford University, confident in his beliefs about God. But when Joy Davidman, an American poet, and her young son enter his life, his theoretical understanding of love and heartache is challenged and he finds the reality to be much harder to accept. Starring Stephen Boxer (Humans, The Iron Lady, Doctors) as CS Lewis and Tony Slattery (Whose Line is it Anyway?), this multi-award-winning West End and Broadway hit is the love story of CS Lewis, Oxford don and author of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Screwtape Letters, and American poet Joy Davidman. From the team behind Birdsong, this visually stunning production promises a powerful story that tackles universal questions of belief and love through the personal experiences of one of the country’s most wellknown writers. @shadowlandstour

United We Stand Townsend Productions A new play by Neil Gore
Friday 22 January In 1972 tens of thousands of building workers won the first national strike in the industry for better pay and conditions. ‘Flying pickets’ left contractors reeling. The Tory government and the large building companies wanted revenge, 24 builders in North Wales were put on trial. They became known as ‘The Shrewsbury 24’, and three of them were jailed, including building workers Des Warren and Ricky Tomlinson (who went on to become well known for playing Jim in The Royle Family). Reflecting the great tide of anger at the time the production is filled with 1970s popular and political songs arranged by renowned folk musician John Kirkpatrick alongside Tomlinson’s poetry from his time in prison. Into Thin Air Precious Cargo
Wednesday 17 February She was doing okay. She had a good job, a great relationship, a nice little flat with cheap wine in the fridge and expensive cushions on the sofa. She was being everything to everyone and juggling all the things that keep a person afloat, head above water, swimming not sinking. But there was always one too many balls in the air and too many people to please. Something had to drop. Using tight ensemble performance and magical-realism, Precious Cargo presents a slick, intelligent exploration of how we cope in an increasingly pressurised world. A Local Boy Invertigo Theatre Company By Dan Murphy Directed by Rae McKen
Friday 4 March Set in Romford, Essex, we follow a number of characters and conversations centring on one horrific event. A local teenager… maybe 16 or 17… a young man… is found dead next to the war memorial. A community is shocked. A mother worries for her son who has gone out for the night. A police officer searches for answers. A girl is waiting at a bus stop for someone who doesn’t show. And two teenagers find love online.

Scuttlers INTERACTIVE THEATRE
Gatecrash Zest Theatre
Tuesday 8 – Friday 11 March With his parents on holiday, Sam is having a house party. Nothing big, just a few close friends… until his sister invites the entire audience. Jonno tries to chat up everything that moves, Imogen gets increasingly drunk, Jazz vies for popularity while Sam attempts to regain control and find his wayward hamster. Throwing out the theatre rulebook, audiences become gatecrashers as they infiltrate an intimate gathering, using silent disco headphones to listen to different parts of the party at the press of a button or to just dance to the music. In a custom built living room, partygoers have complete freedom to eat, drink, look through the bookshelves, join in the games and make as much noise as they like as they add to the chaos of Sam’s disastrous birthday party.
Saturday 19 – Sunday 20 March 1885; the streets of Manchester are crackling with energy, youth and violence. As workers power the Industrial Revolution, 50,000 people are crammed into one square mile. The mills rumble thunderously day and night. The air is thick with smoke. Life is lived large, and lived on the street. Inspired by the stories of Manchester gangs between the nineteenth century and today, and performed by some of Doncaster’s finest young actors, Rona Munro’s new play smashes the nineteenth century against a twenty-first century sensibility to bring the young Scuttlers back to vivid, potent life.

Punching the Sky By Lizi Patch Directed by Mark Hollander
Being a mother is terrifying. When my 11 year old fell apart one evening and told me he’d been persuaded to watch a ‘funny’ online video that turned out to be hardcore pornography I kept it together long enough to answer his questions whilst holding him, over-tightly, trying to find the words to reassure him that his childhood was still intact. Although we both knew that was a lie.

Punching the Sky is a very personal response to the extraordinary national media storm that followed when I dared to blog about this experience. A multi-media play with an original soundtrack and animation, it is a new play about porn, parenting and pressure. Lizi Patch

Dirty Lingerie
Rationale Productions
Written and performed by Aizzah Fatima
Thursday 24 March
Wednesday 6 April
Street dancing, beat boxing and visual effects come together in a multi-sensory explosion that allows you to see the world from a perspective like no other.
Set in post 9/11 America, Dirty Lingerie interweaves the stories of six PakistaniAmerican Muslim women, ranging in age from a six-year-old girl to a sixty-five-yearold woman, at the chaotic juncture of two different cultures.
A young dancer is diagnosed with losing his eyesight and feels that as his visual field deteriorates so does the world around him. Determined not to waste what sight he has left, he sets about on a journey of redefining his world before his vision completely disappears.
Cross-cultural sparks fly and preconceptions about Muslim women, sex, and politics are hilariously and hauntingly shattered in the show The Wall Street Journal says ‘Breaks down stereotypes of Muslim women in America’ and that reviewers call a ‘mustsee’ production.
Set to a heart thumping soundtrack that utilises beatboxing to re-invent audio description this latest production is sure to leave audiences amazed and seeing theatre from a new and exciting perspective.
Having played to sold out houses in New York, Toronto, London, Edinburgh and Pakistan, this is an infectiously entertaining mosaic of the sublime, the comic, the poetic, and the political. A show that transcends boundaries of culture, religion and gender, moving and entertaining audiences with its unique and universal appeal.

The Town Meeting Cap-a-Pie in collaboration with Dr Paul Cowie, Newcastle University
Wednesday 13 April Your town is teetering on the brink. Imminent destruction looms. Homes, livelihoods and an entire way of life are at stake. There’s only one thing for it: a town meeting. But we need help – your help! Time is running out to have your say...
The virtuoso players of Ensemble 360 return to Cast with another beautifully intimate concert in our Second Space, with a strong fantasy-world spirit running through this sparkling programme. John Ireland’s lush and lyrical clarinet sonata summons up images of picturesque countryside, while Brahms’ trio was written with the traditional ‘Forest Horn’ and folk songs very much in mind. Stravinsky conjures a rich tapestry of sparkling music in his Russian parable of a soldier selling his soul – and his violin – for money. Maybe the Devil does get all the best tunes… Second Space 7pm £12.50 / £8.50 students and under 26s*
