DA NC EH AL L

After the smash-hit successes of The Glee Club and Barry Hines’ Kes Cast in association with Right Up Our Street presents Co-directed by Esther Richardson and Lucy Hind

Friday 11 – Saturday 19 September

The story of Doncaster from the dance floor First dances at the Co-op Ballroom through to smooches at Top Rank. Boys on one side of the tracks meet girls from the other at Romeo and Juliet’s, whilst The Beatles play St James’s baths, the Sex Pistols storm Outlook and Bowie rocks Silver Street. Broken heels at Seventh Heaven to broken hearts at Parklands… Taking in dance floor crazes and fashion trends, Dancehall is our story. How we danced through wars hoping soldiers would come home, how we kept going through the strikes. It’s the moves we made through sixteen Prime Minister’s and massive social change. It’s throwing down shapes when our horse won at the St Leger and Dads awkwardly dancing at that street party for the Queen’s coronation. It’s children in Saturday morning classes stepping on stage for the first time, and revellers on Saturday night floors having one last drink.

With a soundtrack playing the music of our time, spanning the last eighty years and featuring twenty-five performers, Dancehall dances through the decades as we revive memories and relive our history. This is dance. This is Doncaster. This is Dancehall.

The Rise and Fall of a Northern Star

Murder One Night Murder One

Written and performed by Stella Grundy

Saturday 13 June

Thursday 4 June

An interactive whodunnit where you are invited to attend Cast for a police reconstruction of the last known movements of a missing girl...

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll – Tracy Star wanted it all! Born into the depressing landscape of 1980’s Northern Britain, Tracy sought to escape the mediocrity of her life and make something of herself in the burgeoning music scene – with Bowie as her guiding light.

As skeletons tumble from the family closet you’ll be able to question the suspects in person as you move throughout the theatre and bar areas. But beware – one of the family is out to prove that blood is thicker than water...

Tracy Star soon became an indie superstar and then indulgence took its toll...

If you can help, book your tickets by calling the incident room now, and please note – this performance requires you to walk about our spaces to solve the mystery.

Manchester Theatre Award nominated, The Rise and Fall of a Northern Star offers a peculiar blend of comedy and tragedy interspersed with original music and rhythmic pacey dialogue.

Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip are a strange and wonderful beast of a band. Edgy, poetic, and hilarious. Mik rambles, throws straws and turns venues into his living room. They’ve had a flying start to this year playing to a rapturous crowd of 300 people at the Brudenell Social Club, and headline spots at a number of festivals. A completely fresh and entertaining setting for a poetry reading from the bestselling phenomenon. The idea of a slightly seditious but seriously good moan about life’s little irritations over a biccy and a cuppa with Wendy has proved unfailingly popular. Wendy reads a hilariously dissatisfied and ironic set either side of afternoon tea, with a question and answer session to round off the event plus an after-show book signing. In an ambience akin to a cosy fireside reading Wendy charms and amuses with her poetry. At times sharp and punchy, at times soft and contemplative. Second Space 3pm £18* (includes afternoon tea)

21,000 Miles of Rail Performed by Hannah Butterfield

Thursday 2 July A one-woman show that playfully explores encounters that can only happen when we are travelling by train. The work is concerned with travel by rail in the north of England, but was initially born out of a slightly unusual experiment… Hannah spent ‘a working day’ observing people passing through Leeds Station. She sat for hours, watching, imagining, and remembering. She thought about time, about travel, and about the effect of modern ticket barriers on notions of romance. She was a witness to all sorts of things. She waited. She spoke to no one. Taking you on a number of routes, through a number of stations, following a number of people making their way... somewhere. Framed by one of Mozart’s charming flute quartets and by one of Beethoven’s first published works, the remarkable Duo by Zoltán Kodály was written in 1914.
