ABOUT CASTLE AND THE TOUR
Welcome
Thank You to Our Sponsors
The Castle production headquarters and company world headquarters.
Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build remodeling company that specializes in remodeling. Castle is a second-generation family business with over 3,900 past clients and was founded in 1977 by Marty Schirber. The Castle Educational Home Tour’s purpose is to educate and inform the public on real everyday remodeling projects, not just the largest or most expensive projects like the luxury tours or Parade shows. On our Tour, Castle will show the public real remodeling projects like mud rooms, laundry rooms, and bathroom remodels that would never be shown on a luxury tour. Remodeling is a huge investment and we understand it takes effort to learn about all your remodeling options. Our Tour is designed to help people make better remodeling decisions for your own remodeling projects, and better understand what a realistic remodel involves, as well as what is achievable within your budget to create a valuable investment in your home. Use this Guide Book to learn more about the homes we are showcasing. It will direct you to the homes that will best help you in planning your project. In each home we have an expert ready to talk to you about the project you are visiting, your upcoming project, and how Castle can help you achieve your remodeling goals.

Company History
IT'S ALL IN THE FAMILY The History of Castle Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build firm specializing in residential remodeling. Castle is a second-generation family business, started in 1977, with over 3,900 past clients. Marty Schirber started the company from his basement and watched it grow over the years. In 2005, Castle moved into its headquarters on Johnson St NE, and two years later Loren acquired Castle Building & Remodeling from his father.
If you hire Castle you will find that our tag line “The Best Value in Professional Remodeling” is our way of life. Our professional team strives to bring a luxury service to the masses. A clearly defined process, direct buying relationships, time tested systems, and efficiency allow Castle to provide a better value and guarantee a better experience. Through our three pronged guarantee we hold ourselves accountable, so you do not have to.
Since then, Castle has seen three more locations open; one in St. Paul and two in South Minneapolis. The unique design studios allow Castle’s interior designers to help clients plan anything from a not so big project all the way up to a whole house reconfiguration. In June of 2012, Castle merged with Camelot Builders, LLC and Aaron Johnson joined the ownership team at Castle as Operations Manager. With the addition of the Camelot employees, Castle can better handle all sizes of remodeling projects. In March of 2014 Castle acquired The Natural Built Home Store and now works to incorporate eco-friendly materials in each project.

Ashley Hansen
Remodeling Design Pro Interior Designer
Ashley received her B.S. in Interior Design from North Dakota State University. Since graduating in 2010 she has worked in various sectors of the design industry. Her diverse experience has given her a comprehensive understanding of the many facets of managing a remodeling project. Designing and crafting have always been a passion for Ashley. In her free time, you can find her sewing clothes and home furnishings, making art, or upholstering furniture — she loves it all. As an interior designer, she draws on her DIY roots, incorporating smart design strategies to create spaces unique as each homeowner. She thrives on building relationships with clients and helping guide them as they create their dream home.
Mark Benzell
Remodeling Design Pro
Mark began remodeling homes in 1978 and operated his own design/build firm for 25 years. In 1992, his design/ build firm was chosen by Remodeling magazine as one of their Big 50 contractors of the year. He has been a longtime member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chapter of NARI from 19912007. In 1994 — as president of the MN chapter — he received the Industry Leader of the Year Award. In 2007, Mark was named as a founding Director for Minnesota GreenStar and served as the Minnesota GreenStar Treasurer and Operations Manager through 2011. With more than 38 years of residential design under his tool belt, Mark’s end goal with every project is to create a functional, attractive remodel that looks like it could have always been part of the house.
Emily Blonigen
Remodeling Design Pro Interior Designer
Emily Blonigen received her B.S. in Interior Design from the Art Institutes International Minnesota. She began her career at Castle as an intern in 2012 and quickly began managing projects both large and small. Emily is currently studying for her LEED Green Associate certification. With a focus on creating sustainable and healthy environments, Emily finds her design inspiration in how the end result of each unique room and home as a whole should function. Pairing her design practices with smart material selections, she looks forward to the growing interest in developing a prosperous and more sustainable future in home design and the positive affect those smart choices will have on future generations.

There's a lot to consider when redesigning your home. Meet the team that will help you make all the right choices.
Amanda Reinert Remodeling Designer Interior Designer
Amanda was first introduced to the world of design through a fascination with multiple subjects including art, psychology, writing and philosophy. Intent on involving these multiple passions into her future career (and a small push from the game “The Sims”), Amanda decided to enroll in the Architecture program at the University of Minnesota. She received a Bachelor of Design (BDA) in Architecture, settling into the residential remodeling business in 2011. Amanda appreciates the diverse tasks, challenges, colleagues, and clients she works with daily. She states, “There is something aweinspiring about the entire process, from the first handshake with a homeowner, to the design phase, production, and final walk-through of a completed project… all of which was once a concept, and is born into reality. The design and remodeling process echoes the story and personality unique to each homeowner, which is very rewarding in and of itself.

Amy Hinck
Design Manager, AKBD
Amy grew up around construction, working as a laborer for her dad’s masonry company. She has a B.A. in Architecture and is certified as an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer and a LEED Green Associate. Since joining the remodeling industry in 2005, Amy has worked as a drafter, designer, project manager, and store manager. She joined Castle in 2012 and became Design Manager in 2014. She pitches in wherever needed, keeps the showrooms up-todate, assigns and reviews projects, and builds relationships with trade partners. She develops, edits and maintains companywide processes and documents while also fostering continuing education among the design staff. Although she wears many hats, Amy manages to always have Castle clients’ best interests at heart.
Natalie Hanson
Katy Dale
Remodeling Designer Interior Designer
Architectural Associate AIA Remodeling Designer
Natalie received her B.A. in Interior Design in 2012 from the Art Institutes International Minnesota and has been actively working in the industry ever since. She has been interested in art, architecture and interiors since childhood and discovered the field of interior design as a great avenue for her next professional adventure. With a unique background to her design career, she attended an alternative high school at the Minnesota Zoo — the School of Environmental Studies — where she developed a passion for environmental sciences. Right out of high school, she decided to pursue a career in Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma where she spent two years chasing tornados and attending Sooner football games.
www.castlehometour.com
Katy received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota College of Design. She has worked in the industry since 2002, with experience in sustainable design, healthcare, and even virtual reality. Prior to joining Castle she worked at a small, award-winning architecture firm in Minneapolis, where she was lead designer on a range of projects – from small commercial (breweries, book store) to both residential remodels and new homes. She enjoys bringing her design skills and knowledge to the table while working closely with homeowners to reimagine the function and look of their home. Breathing new life into older homes is incredibly rewarding and she particularly enjoys wrestling with the complexity of fitting modern functionality into small footprints so that the outcome significantly improves the flow of day-to-day living. Her design philosophy strives to consider budget, context, and quality to achieve elegant and timeless solutions.

H1: 3936 Macalaster Dr. NE
Designer: Natalie Hanson | Project Type: Kitchen + Bathroom | Home Style: Split Level | Project Style: Mid-Century Modern | Project Duration: 12 Weeks
This beautiful mid-century home was in need of some major updates to the kitchen and main bathroom. The original 1972 kitchen and bathroom were extremely dark and quirky – an old bidet in the bathroom and cooktop shoved into the corner of the kitchen made it difficult for the homeowner’s to cook and clean efficiently in both spaces. The remodel gave them the opportunity to create a new layout in each of the rooms – the kitchen was opened up to the eat-in area, the cooktop was relocated for a better work triangle, and more counter space was added through a small island. Custom bench seats were added to the eat-in area for added storage and character to the kitchen.
Before
The bathroom was reconfigured to eliminate the old 70’s bidet, and a useless storage cabinet, which allowed us to add a large, walk in shower with bench and a separate soaking tub. The same cabinetry and earthy color palette was used in the bathroom to create cohesion and to emphasize the mid-century character of the home. What was created is much brighter, more functional and is a timeless yet new space for the homeowner’s to enjoy as they age in the home.

Designer: Natalie Hanson | Project Type: Kitchen | Home Style: Rambler | Project Style: Mid-Century Modern | Project Duration: 9 Weeks
The goal of the homeowner was to modernize and make the existing kitchen more functional by adding storage, countertop work space, and better task lighting. Castle designed an updated kitchen that refaced and painted half of the cabinets and added new deeper cabinets in an L shape. White cabinetry help compliment the locallymade recycled glass countertops and white oak hardwood floors.
Before
Thanks to ample LED cabinet lighting the most noticeable feature of this updated kitchen is the local hand-made backsplash tile from Mercury Mosaics. A new mid-century modern appropriate ThermaTru fiberglass backdoor was also installed. Stainless steel LG appliances and classic chrome fixtures give the perfect finishing touches. While you’re here check out the remodeled dining room, basement, basement bathroom / laundry room which are also on tour.

H3: 3123 Hayes St. NE
Designer: Amanda Reinert | Project Type: Kitchen + Addition | Home Style: 1.5 Story| Project Style: Modern | Project Duration: 20 Weeks
This whole-level remodel started with the existing kitchen/dining area being cramped and a rear sunken entrance that did not fit their everyday needs. The homeowners wanted an open floor plan with plenty of counterspace, cabinetry, natural light, and generous walking spaces for the traffic flow of this busy family of 5. A mudroom was also key to allow for a daily drop spot for coats, shoes, and sports equipment. The sunken area in the kitchen was framed in to be level with the rest of the floor and three walls were removed to create a flexible space. The island and peninsula create a multi-functioning space for two prep areas, guests to sit, a homework/work spot, etc.
Before
Natural light drove the cabinet design and resulted in primarily base cabinets instead of a standard upper cabinet/base cabinet layout. Deep drawers, accessories, and tall storage replaced what would be wall cabinets to allow for the empty wall space to capture as much natural light as we could. The double sliding door and large window were important factors in maximizing light.

Designer: Mark Benzell | Project Type: Basement | Home Style: Rambler | Project Style: Mid-Century Modern | Project Duration: 13 Weeks
Built in 1951, this sprawling ranch style home has plenty of room for a large family, but the basement was vintage 50’s, with dark wood paneling and poor lighting. One redeeming feature was a curved bar, with multi-colored glass block lighting in the foot rest, wood paneling surround, and a redorange laminate top. If one thing was to be saved, this was it. Castle designed an open family, media & game room with a dining area near the vintage bar and an additional bedroom. Midcentury modern cabinetry was custom made to provide an open partition between the family and game rooms, as well as needed storage and display for family photos and mementos.
Before
The enclosed, dark stairwell was opened to the new family space and a custom steel & cable railing system was installed. Lots of new lighting brings a bright, welcoming feel to the space. Now, the entire family can share and enjoy a part of the house that was previously uninviting and underused.

State of Technology "Today"
by JZ Electric & Homelink Entertainment
Technology is ever evolving and changing. In the past, traditional audio video installation companies use equipment that are tried and true. That equipment would be centrally located and would distribute to the whole house. These systems can be expensive and require more maintenance. Today, consumer electronics manufacturers are designing products that improve our daily experiences, increase efficiencies, add capacity to get work done, and to simply have fun. Almost all electronics are mini computers and are connecting to the internet (IoT “internet of things”). However these benefits can also provide frustration and confusion. Having someone to help navigate these technologies is becoming as common as having someone change your vehicle’s oil. We spend every day connecting home electronics and have extensive knowledge of what works and what doesn’t. Carefully choosing products based on experience is critical to a happy homeowner. Here are some tips we think that may help you navigate the world of consumer electronics “today”. Traditional
Modern
Lighting Control – Probably our favorite area of home automation. Having your lights turn on/off every day automatically, never coming home to a dark house, or creating scenes to turn off the entire home when you leave are some of the main reasons why we love lighting control. Because of its importance, we turn to Lutron. The company who invented the dimmer is also the company who provides the best means to control your lights. Their app allows you to easily set daily schedules or adjust the levels in the scenes. Lutron is also the most reliable lighting control products in the market.
We really prefer a whole house approach for music in the home. Using Bluetooth speakers can be frustrating when a phone call comes in and your music stops playing. Or how about when you walk away from the Bluetooth speaker and the music starts skipping? Sonos is the answer and should be your choice for whole house music. Whether it’s one portable speaker or a house full of speakers built into the ceiling of every room, Sonos has you covered. They support roughly 70 different streaming media choices (Apple Music, Pandora, SiriusXM, and more) so whatever your listening preference, Sonos has you covered.

Voice control is what we consider “tomorrow’s” technology. Today, it’s still a work in progress but the writing is on the wall. Customers love the idea of voice control because of its convenience. BUT it can also can be frustrating when it doesn’t understand what you’re asking of it. We currently don’t recommend voice control because of its inconsistences to control your home. However we do help homeowners set it up and give them the tools to use it. It’s only a matter of time before voice control become a part of our daily life!

Designer: Emily Blonigen | Project Type: Attic | Home Style: Craftsman / Bungalow| Project Style: Transitional | Project Duration: 8 Weeks
This growing family needed more living space in their 1926 St. Paul Bungalow, and had great potential in their unfinished attic for a master suite. Castle began working with the city to grandfather some existing conditions in, like the steeper stairs and lower ceiling height to comply with building codes. New insulation, interior walls, electrical, heating, and a full interior finish was planned. The finished space incorporates traditional millwork matching the lower level of the home, a custom built-in bookshelf, and pre-finished white oak hardwood floors in a rich Licorice stain. The dark floors and oil-bronze accents throughout the space really anchor the room and complete an overall color pallet with high contrast.
Before
In the new bathroom, a cement tile floor was selected to tie in the homeowners’ classy flair. Switching the finishes to polished brass inside the bathroom really brings a lux and regal feel to the space. Paired with traditional subway tile, white vanity, refurbished vintage medicine cabinet, and neutral walls, the new bathroom is elegant, yet understated. One of our favorite features is the use of the two existing dormers. One dormer was converted into a new walk-in closet with custom glass closet doors, so the light can still shine into the bedroom. The 2nd dormer was left open for a quaint sitting and reading nook.

No strangers to remodeling the new owners knew they could update this decrepit duplex into a single-family home. A list of desired amenities was a catalyst for turning a bedroom into a large mudroom, an open kitchen space where their large family can gather, an additional exterior door for direct access to a patio, two home offices, an additional laundry room central to bedrooms, and a large master bathroom. To best understand the complexity of the floor plan changes, see the construction documents.
Before
As for the aesthetic, this was inspired by a deep appreciation for the durability, colors, textures and simplicity of Norwegian design. The home’s light paint colors set a positive tone. An abundance of tile creates character. New lighting reflecting the home’s original design is mixed with simplistic modern lighting. To pay homage to the original character several light fixtures were reused, wallpaper was repurposed at a ceiling, the chimney was exposed, and a new coffered ceiling was created. Overall, this eclectic design style was carefully thought out to create a cohesive design throughout the home.

Kitchen Cabinets 101
by The Woodshop of Avon
1. Wood Species- There are many types of wood species available. 2. Manufacturing Process – A good starting point in selecting your cabinets is to determine the options, availability and specialization your kitchen project timeframe and budget requires. Then, decide if semi-custom or custom cabinets best suit your needs. • Semi-Custom – Offers more flexible options for storage, design and style as well as wider selection of wood and finish choices. Semi-custom cabinets offer more functionality. • Custom – Constructed to fit your kitchen to your specifications. Custom cabinets make use of all available space and are an ideal solution when non-standard sizes are needed to fit irregular-shaped spaces. Delivery time can take up to six or more weeks. Price varies based on size, materials and options. 3. Cabinet Box Materials – Cabinets are often constructed from other materials or combinations of materials. These materials are often combined to provide cost-effective, high-quality durability for the parts of your cabinet that are typically unexposed or behind the scenes. Materials commonly used for cabinet boxes and shelves include: • Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) – An engineered wood made from fine wood particles and glue formed into sheets. MDF is often used as a backing material for laminates and other finishes. MDF is very dense, resists warping and has a smooth surface suitable for veneers, laminates and paints. • Plywood – This engineered wood is composed of layers of veneers stacked and glued together with alternative layers oriented at right angles, providing strength in its length and width. Furniture-grade plywood is used in custom cabinetry. Because heat and moisture cause wood to expand and contract in the direction of the grain, plywood’s cross-grain pattern makes it more stable and stronger than solid wood. 4. Drawers – Make sure to check out the drawers and the hardware on the drawers. Is it soft close? Does the hardware mount on the sides of the cabinets taking up space and making the drawers smaller on the bottom?
5. Accessories & Add-Ons – Get the most out of your kitchen cabinets with accessories that help maximize storage, provide easy access to cabinet contents and reduce clutter on countertops. Pull-out Shelves offer the convenience of quick access to everything on the shelf. wo-tiered Cutlery/Flatware Dividers – Store nearly T twice as many utentils and flatware. Lazy Susans - Make items in corner cabinets accessible with one- and two-tiered spinning shelves. Spice Pullouts – Narrow pull-outs with multiple shelves work great for storing spices in an organized and easy-to-see fashion.
6. Door Design – Once you’ve selected the wood type for your doors, you can choose the design from literally hundreds of styles. While manufacturers offer a wide variety from which to choose, below are some of the most popular.

This Arts & Crafts home was built in 1926 and has all the features associated with that traditional architectural style. After two previous remodels (essentially the entire 1st & 2nd floors) the homeowners were ready to remodel their basement. The existing basement floor was in rough shape so the decision was made to remove the old concrete floor and pour an entirely new slab. A family room, spacious laundry room, powder bath, a huge shop area and lots of added storage were all priorities for the project.
Before
Working with and around the existing mechanical systems was a challenge and resulted in some creative ceiling work, and a couple of quirky spaces! Custom cabinetry enhances nearly every part of the basement, including a unique recycling center in the basement stairwell. The laundry also includes a Paperstone countertop, and one of the nicest laundry sinks you’ll ever see.

These wonderful homeowners contacted Castle in NEED of a new kitchen. The old kitchen was falling apart. After years of making it work, they finally decided to take the next steps, so they could love their home again. After seeing the home and discussing the family’s needs, we decided the best kitchen for them would include opening the kitchen up into the dining room for better work flow within the kitchen space. The homeowners had no idea their kitchen could feel so large without an addition! It was a joy to show them their homes potential.
Before
The new kitchen includes a balance of the existing homes finishes along with some more contemporary updates. New custom designed cabinetry, granite countertops, subway tile backsplash, new appliances, new lighting, new luxury vinyl Adura tile flooring, new millwork to match existing, and a new back door complete the kitchen. Castle’s favorite part of the kitchen are the Kashmir Pearl granite countertops. The granite has a splash of plum color that really draws your eye in when you look closely and matches nicely with the homes original dark millwork. The homeowners favorite feature was the floors! Luxury vinyl is a great alternative to a tile floor for a nice aesthetic that also isn’t so hard on your feet. The homeowners could not be happier with their new space.

Kitchen Layout Basics Planning a kitchen remodel can be a complicated puzzle with many variables and peculiarities. Some considerations that Castle’s professional designers consider include: Finding the perfect placement for the sink, locating the dishwasher, spacing for an efficient work triangle, having ample walk spaces and good traffic flow, cabinet clearances and door swings, and a mix of storage and prep space. Below are drawings and diagrams from the National Kitchen and Bath Association that go into further detail on kitchen planning basics.

H9: 3924 27th Ave. S.
Designer: Amanda Reinert | Project Type: Kitchen + Addition | Home Style: Craftsman | Project Style: Contemporary | Project Duration: 14 Weeks
These homeowners wanted to accomplish two things: make their tiny 96SF kitchen larger, and add a dining area next to the kitchen. Since the room to the kitchen was used as a living space, they wanted to expand out of the back, utilizing the deck space for the dining room / kitchen, and allowing for more storage, natural light, and functionality.
Before
To achieve their goals, the chimney was removed, and a small addition was added on which allowed a galley style kitchen to take form and a nice, bright dining area. The challenge was leaving their living room and surrounding spaces untouched, and working around the existing stairs to the basement. The solution was to extend the wall out next to the stairway to grant more wall space to the kitchen and create a “hall” to the basement stairs. Creating an entrance in to the dining/kitchen area from the garage also helped tie in their most common point of entry to the new design.

Designer: Emily Blonigen | Project Type: Kitchen | Home Style: Craftsman/Bungalow| Project Style: Traditional | Project Duration: 13 Weeks
These homeowners contacted Castle for a wholekitchen renovation which included opening it into the dining room so the family could enjoy a multipurpose space. A fresh traditional kitchen design was planned to provide better function for the family’s needs and rejuvenate the home. New hardwood floors match the existing hardwoods. New custom-built flush-inset cabinetry includes custom storage, glass uppers and accessories (silverware tray divides, trash pull-out, outlet docking drawer for phones to charge, custom shelf roll-outs and lazy Susan corners).
Before
We selected historic paint colors to keep within the period of the home. The base cabinets are painted in Benjamin Moore, Tarrytown green and the uppers in a soft white. By doing two cabinetry colors, we were able to anchor the base cabinets to the floor while still having light walls and white cabinetry. Cambria Quartz countertops were selected in the luxurious and classic Torquay design. Additionally, we improved the overall light quality in the space. 2 windows were replaced, and 1 added. We installed 2 Solatubes which include a solar-powered night light! Overall, the new traditional kitchen is much like a spring day - light, airy and inviting!

3. DELIVER Optical Diffusion and Control . Diffusers and fixtures designed to minimize glare and improve visual comfort . Optional Daylight Dimmer features patented butterfly baffle design
Solatubes can go almost anywhere
Installing a Solatube is fast, clean and easy
Solatubes are actually good for you
Solatubes are cost-effective
The compact and flexible design of TDDs allow then to be installed in just about any room, including rooms without direct roof access and smaller spaces where daylighting would usually not be an option.
They require no structural reframing, tunneling, drywalling or painting. A professional can install the product in less than two hours.
All of the incredible benefits of daylighting have only recently come to light. It has been shown in several prominent studies that increasing daily exposure to natural light can enhance mental and physical well-being, boost concentration and energy levels and a variety of other unexpected perks.
The cost of a Solatube is considerably less than other daylighting options, such as windows and skylights, including both product and installation costs.

Designer: CBR | Project Type: Bathroom | Home Style: Tudor| Project Style: Transitional | Project Duration: 8 Weeks
This family and has been living in their home for over 2 years now and it wasn't meeting their needs. The lack of AC in the bathroom was an issue, the bathtub leaked frequently, and their lack of a shower made it difficult for them to use the space well. After researching Design/Build firms, they came to Castle on the recommendations from others.
Before
Wanting a clean "canvas" to work with, we removed all the flooring, plaster walls, tiles, plumbing and electrical fixtures. We replaced the existing window with a beautiful Marvin Integrity window with privacy glass to match the rest of the home. We added a bath fan and a much smaller radiator. We installed a new cast iron bathtub, tub filler, hand shower, new custom vanity with Cambria Weybourne countertop and a recessed medicine cabinet. The entire space feels charming with all new traditional black and white hexagon floor tile, tiled shower niche, white subway tile bath tub surround, tile wainscoting and custom shelves above the toilet. Just outside the bathroom, we also installed an attic access ladder in their hallway, that is not only functional, but is aesthetically pleasing.

Factors to Consider when Choosing a Contractor
Homes on Tour
Historic Remodel
Licensed and Insured
The contractor is licensed to practice in the State of Minnesota and carries appropriate insurance coverage in case anything goes wrong with the project.
Price
The contractor is upfront and honest with detailed costs respects your budget and works to design the project to fit within these parameters.
Reputation
The contractor has a good reputation with past customers, and their customers refer them to friends and family.
Completeness of the Estimate
The contractor gives you a detailed estimate and explains all allowances and other costs associated with your project.
The Contract
All the necessary facets of the project are spelled out clearly. You won’t have any surprises once the job is started.
Level of Experience
This is a combination of years in the business, typical projects for the contractor, and whether the contractor has been in business long enough to know where their niche is and what they are good at.
Size of the Company
The size of a company can affect the quality of the product. A company that has grown too quickly may not be able to provide the same quality, experience, and attention to detail as a smaller company who has retained the same employees for years.
Job Schedule
The contractor is in charge of the scheduling of the job so your home is disrupted as little as possible. This involves ordering materials and coordinating subcontractors to get in, finish their part of the job, and get out.
Use Employees or Subs
When a contractor works with their own carpenters every day for years, they get a very good idea of their strengths and weaknesses. Contractors who hire employees from a pool of laborers may get new workers on the job every day and may not know how experienced or qualified the workers will be.
Communication
Communication is very important to a successful remodeling project. A good contractor will be easy to get a hold of and will have systems in place to make sure your wishes are noted and followed. They will also make sure everyone on the jobsite knows what is going on.
Customer Service
Business Location
How close is the contractor’s shop or office to you? Working within a defined area can allow a contractor to give more personal attention to each job. This becomes much more difficult if the contractor’s office is across town from the project.
Customer service is how well the contractor serves you and your family. This can include communication, keeping appointments, being punctual, and keeping the customer informed at all times. This may also include educating the customer about their options.
Company History
Creativity
Company history refers to the strength of the business and the length of time doing the same business. Good businesses sustain themselves and build while poor businesses struggle to find a niche and reinvent themselves.
Creativity is an important skill in the remodeling business. Often a contractor is faced with a homeowner who doesn’t know what they want. In this situation, it is up to the contractor to solve the problem and make the space “work.”
Organization on the Job
Guarantees and Warranties
Organization is a major part of a successful remodeling project. The plumbing and electrical work must be completed before the cabinets and countertops can be set in place. Coordination of all the different trades will lead to a smooth project.
Minnesota law mandates that contractors warranty their work for a specified period of time, so technically all contractors have warranties. A good contractor will clearly spell out their warranty in their contract and will provide the homeowner with the expiration dates
Design Services
Craftsmanship
Design services are most important when changing the shape or layout of a space. For a remodeling contractor to have a designer on staff shows that they are committed to creating the best and most suitable space for your project.

Craftsmanship and attention to detail are very important to make a project fit into your home. Simple details like matching trim and windows can really make a project look like it has always been a part of your home.

1950’s kitchens need love too… and make great remodels! These homeowners contacted Castle for help on their kitchen remodel. The biggest wish-list item was a larger and more functional kitchen layout (with expanded views into the previously completed rear addition/dining room). After some conceptual designs were assessed, we chose to keep this kitchen’s existing footprint and expand the site lines into the rear dining space with a new drywall opening. We expanded the function of the kitchen by wrapping the peninsula around into the dining room with additional pantry space for storage. Each cabinet was well thought out to include functional storage like plate divides, utensil pull-outs, and trash/recycle bins.
Before
Working with the designer, the homeowners found a beautiful balance of some contemporary aesthetics like the overall color scheme combined with some classic elements such as the detailed cabinetry and herringbone tile backsplash. The wood texture plank floor tile adds depth and texture as well as contrasts nicely with the softer and refined finishes. New Cambria quartz countertops, custom lighting, and new plumbing fixtures complete the space. Truly timeless!

The homeowners of this 1906 home in East Harriet are returning customers of Castle. They were so pleased with Castle’s work on the last project, they chose to work with us again for their 2nd bathroom remodel. The designer and homeowners decided an en suite would bring the biggest return of enjoyment and return on investment. By taking an existing dressing room, we were able to make this happen. We relocated the original hall bedroom entry into the new dressing room space and were able to create a beautiful entry to both the bedroom and the new master bath. New French doors were installed for a grand entry into the bedroom and add a 2nd source of natural lighting.
Before
For this new bathroom, we wanted to create a similar vintage feel to coordinate with the hallway bath. A new clawfoot tub was installed with vintage-inspired shower and curtain rod, a salvaged cast iron radiator, new built-in storage at the attic knee wall, new vanity with carrara marble counters, and to complete the space 1” hex tile floor and beautiful millwork to match the original style in the home. The homeowners are incredibly happy with their new space and proud to have a Minneapolis home with an en suite! See this, and the first bathroom remodel we did for this family on tour!

Designer: Ashley Hansen | Project Type: Whole-House | Home Style: Split Level| Project Style: Modern | Project Duration: 13 Weeks
New owners brought a new vision for this home. Part of the vision was to reconfigure the main level to better accommodate their lifestyle. This was accomplished by making the kitchenette, kitchen, dining room and living room one large open space. Two large kitchen islands now become the focal point which welcome people in. Another substantial change has been the combination of two bedrooms to make one large master suite. The master suite now includes a bedroom, large master closet, multipurpose room and the master bathroom has almost doubled in size. The idea behind the master’s multipurpose room is that it can function as an office or sitting room or baby’s room.
Before
In addition to the layout changes is an overhaul of the main level finishes. New materials have been selected to create a simplistic and neutral backdrop which transformed the space into a modern design aesthetic. This remodel has created a space that is to set the tone for revamping the home’s exterior and basement. The main level and entryway is now the space these new homeowners envisioned spending the next twenty plus years.

I SEE FIELDS OF GREEN Castle Building & Remodeling partners with Field Outdoor Spaces to provide their clients with the best urban landscaping in the Twin Cities While many companies shy away from the tight lots and challenging yards in urban spaces, Field Outdoor Spaces has made an art of it. For the last THIRTEEN years and counting, Field has worked with homeowners in Minneapolis, St. Paul and other neighborhoods around the Twin Cities to maximize their outdoor living areas. Most projects start with a design and the dedicated design team, led by Karina Greenwood, Dylan Reid and Megan Beissner are especially good at listening and making sure that the end product gives you time to enjoy the space rather than just work to keep it up. Field design balances well-thought-out living areas with plantings that give a sense of a natural and living environment.

give a project budget number right there. To set expectations - a full renovation of a typical 40’ by 30’ backyard can come in between $12,000 and $30,000 depending on the scope. Field offers thoughtful design and professional crews that build high-quality landscapes with minimal impact on your existing plants, structures and your neighborhood. We’re “Employee Powered” meaning that you can count on employees receiving living wages and benefits that allow them to live a healthy life.
Working with a design/build landscape company that specializes in small spaces pays dividends. Field has worked hard to develop unique solutions over the years. While much of the industry focuses on concrete products, Field uses predominantly clay pavers and stone for patios and mixed stone for walls. These materials integrate better in older neighborhoods and are a better long-term investment since they get better with time. With a full metal and woodshop, Field also integrates elements that make the landscape livable and contemporary - like rusted steel planters, cedar pergolas, sun sails and Field-designed trellises. Landscapes are for living and Field can also help design outdoor kitchens, from simple grill tables to more elaborate masonry islands. How about a pizza oven, for instance? Field prides itself on being up front on pricing. During the free consultation, the Field designer will walk through the scope of the project and listen to what you want to accomplish with your renovation. They then describe how they would approach your space and for most projects,

Landscapes on Tour Check out these 3 beautiful landscapes featured on Tour this year:
H15
Front Porch Feel (Minus the Porch) 2419 Hayes Street NE Minneapolis 55418 Looking for a "front porch feel" without the porch? This project shows how you can create a natural and inviting patio area in your front yard. Taking advantage of a great perch looking out over Windom Park, the brick and stone patio and rich plantings create a great area to sit back and take in city life. And this was a Free Design Winner! As part of the Castle Tour, Field generally raffles a free design for tour goers. This client won the prize several years ago.
H16
Semi-Formal Garden 1910 McKinley Street NE Minneapolis 55418 This unique garden marries year-round color, contrasting leaf textures, and existing site features to create a semi-formal garden. Although the aim of this garden was to create a colorful, tidy setting, the careful selection of plant materials really draws pollinators into the space as well.
H17
Cottage Garden Retreat 2092 Bayard Avenue St. Paul 55116 After undergoing a partial home remodel, our client was looking to transform their yard into an oasis that they could relax, entertain, and spend time in the garden. Utilizing existing materials along with new, the former construction zone has been transformed into a unique cottage garden retreat.

Solar Projects on Tour Check out these 2 Solor Projects featured on Tour this year:
H18
Solar Airbnb 846 Laurel Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104 Grid-tied solar home in Saint Paul. Dr. Susan Clarke decided to go solar in 2016 because she is focused on being sustainable and taking steps to reduce her carbon footprint. She also has frequent Airbnb guests in the home, and when it became clear that she could reduce the electric expense and add value to her property she decided solar was right for her.
H19
Tree Loss = Solar Opportunity! 5319 Knox Avenue S., Minneapolis, MN 55419 Grid-tied solar home in Minneapolis- When a 280-year-old elm tree in George and Jenna Hutchinson’s backyard had to come down, they turned it into a solar power opportunity. All Energy Solar helped him size and install a 13-panel solar array for their home in 2012, and they ended up adding 4 more panels in 2014.
