Greetings! Greetings and salutations, Kiwis! I guess it’s true what they say; time really does fly when you’re having fun. In just two short months, the 2016-2017 term will be over. The new board will be installed and the old retired. It’s hard to imagine that just a little under a year ago, I, along with the rest of your 2016-2017 board, came into the position of an officer for Castro Valley Key Club. Soon, it will be our turn to pass the torch to our “babies” as the next officers are installed. We have a short ways to go before the end of our term, but it’s never too late to finish strong! We have many new exciting events coming up for you all to attend these next 2 months, and now is a better time than ever to get more involved in Key Club. This month, Division 2 will be holding some great events as well, including our annual Kiwevils Ice Skating event with Division 26 South. Ever wanted to meet some Blue Devils? Come out to Dublin Iceland on February 18th! In addition to these new upcoming events, elections for the next board are coming up! Starting Tuesday, February 14, in the main gym, speeches will be presented to you all during the general meeting and continue throughout the following weeks. Only those who are paid members may vote for the next officers. So if you’re ready to cast your vote, or if you’re just curious to check out the future leaders of Key Club, come stop by during the meetings to listen in on some great speeches! So that’s all for me right now. Make sure to sign up for upcoming events and fundraisers, and I hope to see your beautiful faces in the future! “Life’s most persistent question is, what are you doing for others?” -Martin Luther King, Jr. Yours in service, JP Aquino CVHS Key Club President 2016-2017

Member and Officer of the Month What was your favorite Key Club memory?

“My favorite key club memory is going to the winter social and meeting people and connecting to them outside of school.”

What is your favorite aspect of Key Club?

“My favorite aspect of Key Club is being able to do service for our local community but also getting real life experience at the same time.”

Jenny Wu (right), Freshman What position do you hold right now? “I am the Treasurer of Castro Valley Key Club.”

What are some task or duties of your position? “My main task is to make sure the club always has a safe budget that can support our activities. I'm expected to communicate with all the other officers, advisors, and faculty to make sure all our fantastic events can happen!”

What was your most memorable Key Club memory? “My most memorable Key Club moment was my first FRN. I loved the passion and enthusiasm that I saw from everyone. FRN reminded me how Castro Valley is just a small club, in the midst of a big district, in the midst of an even larger organization. I really got to see just how amazing and able Key Club is, and how Key Club really does make a difference in so many lives.”

RECAPS Volunteering for the Joaquin Miller Plant Nursery was a fun experience! The people there were always kind and cheerful, and they really seemed to have a passion for what they were doing for the environment. -JP Aquino, President

I would describe the Don Jose event as fun, charismatic, joyful, meaningful, and rewarding! -Jenny Wu, Member

During the Hayward Shoreline event, I probably saw inclusiveness the most out of the 4 Core Values, because all the members were communicating and getting to know each other while working in the gardens. Everyone was helping to make the area more beautiful. -Audrey Soohoo, Member

Starting 2017 with Castro Valley Key Club! 1/06/17 And just like that, the holiday season quickly came to an end. Two weeks full of good food, company, sleep and time spent with the loved ones. The holiday season is a great opportunity to catch up with those you may rarely see or live far away. Castro Valley Key Club decided to hold our annual winter social for the members to gather one last time before break ended. Having the social set up potluck style allowed a variety of food for people to choose from. From fried rice to baguette to kimbaps to pizza to even just simple chips and salsa! As 3 PM ticked on the clock, the doorbell began ringing. The members began arriving one by one and slowly the once quiet and cold house became cheerful and warm with holiday spirit! A hour into the social, the members joined together for a fun icebreaker session. The members started by introducing themselves, then followed up by several entertaining icebreakers! As the social progressed into the night, some decided to join a fun game of cards, while others played jenga, socialized and even just sat around and enjoyed the comforting food. The social brought an unforgettable end to a great winter break and we can't wait to host the next annual winter social! Super big thank you to member, Ethan Kwong, for allowing us to use his house for this social!

Closing Note

Happy Valentine’s Day Kiwis! Have you participated in the Kiwanis Family & Friend’s monthly challenge yet? If not, make sure to snap a picture with a fellow Kiwanis friend and post it to social media to show your love for them and your friendship with them during February! I surely am super grateful for all the amazing and loving friends that I have made throughout my Key Club journey. I cannot imagine how my life would be like without walking into the gym every Tuesday to see all my hardworking and passionate members or just showing up at service events to give back to the community. These friendships made are truly unforgettable and everlasting in my memories. Make sure to come out to some of our upcoming events; Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing, Sophomore Moving Night, Safeway Bake Sale, Kiwevils Skating and our February DCM! Don’t forget to attend our next couple meetings to hear some amazing speeches from your candidates for the next upcoming term! Come and listen to what they have in mind and what they hope to accomplish throughout the term. Our candidates have worked super hard for the last couple weeks regarding election, and now all they need is your vote! So come out and vote for who YOU believe is most fit each position. And that’s all from me! Make sure to tune in to next month’s newsletter. Capturing one moment at a time, Anna Zheng CVHS Key Club Bulletin Editor 2016-2017 10
