Black, Bangladeshi and Pakistani gangs on the rise R

eports of blackmail, kidnappings, torture, extortion and ransom demands were allegedly made by local township gangs, Bangladeshi and Pakistani crime syndicates against fellow nationals in the townships. The editor of KATHORUS MAIL, Zaid Khumalo, waited until “Jummuah” - the Friday Prayer Day - at the local Masjid, to speak with several South Asian Muslim immigrants. He visited several others at their barricaded spaza-shops in the townships, to find out more about those behind the spate of violent criminal activities against their own, and why? The rusty and unpainted steel mesh barricades and heavy burglar bars used to shield spaza-shops owned by Bangladeshi and Pakistani foreign nationals from local criminals in the townships are now being used by the same shop-owners to protect themselves against the crime syndicates run by their fellow Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals, who are operating with black gangs to target the shops run by their countrymen in the townships. Claims of abductions, kidnappings, extortion and high ransom demands being made by organised criminal syndicates linked to both Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals have many South Asian immigrants who run spaza-shops in Kathorus and Palm Ridge, as well as in Soweto and other parts of the country, in a grip of fear. The kidnappings and ransom demands are said to be aimed at wealthy Bangladeshi and Pakistani shop-owners and their employees. Ransom is being demanded from their families in

AFRAID OF THEIR OWN: South Asian traders in Katlehong, with their goods displayed on a pavement outside the Sontonga Mall Shopping Centre. Many of these traders and spaza-shop owner have become victims of extortion and kidnapping by various syndicates. South Africa and, sometimes, from relatives in Bangladesh or in Pakistan. Recent video footage of a Bangladeshi abduction survivor, who claims his relatives were blackmailed by his fellow countrymen into paying a ransom for his release, has been linked to a Pakistani syndicate that extorts money from their countrymen who operate businesses in black informal settlements. More footage from the same video shows a group of men leaving what is described in the footage as ''a local police station in Ekurhuleni'', after filing a charge of abduction and extortion with the police.

“Many of them are in the country illegally. And, besides, we are all Muslims,” said a Bangladeshi national. But, the Kathorus SAPS's media liaison officer, Capt Mega Ndobe, has rejected claims of kidnappings involving Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals in the Kathorus area. “We’ve had no kidnapping or abduction case involving Bangladeshi or Pakistani nationals reported to the cluster in Kathorus in the past 48

hours, prior to your enquiry,” he said. But, according to several Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals approached by Kathorus MAIL for comment, this is not the kind of criminal incident most foreign nationals would want to report to the police. “Many of them are in the country illegally. And, besides, we are all Muslims,” said a Bangladeshi national and spaza-shop owner who confirmed the existence of what he described in his broken English as “banditos” or bandits. It’s all about jealousy, added a Pakistani shop-owner who lives in a rented two-room shack with his black girlfriend, in an informal set-

Murmurs and rumours of fears and threats of reprisals from marauding, faceless and nameless Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals and their black local criminal counterparts have spread fear, anger and even frustration among many South Asian immigrants, who decry the abductions and the kidnappings as the work of the “Shaitan”, or satan.

Cops have been Great move for Kathorus Mail thrown a curve ball

F

OR the past fortnight, I’ve been waking up with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat following the recent conviction by a Pretoria High Court Judge of the eight Daveyton policemen accused of the death of Mozambican taxi driver Mido Masia in 2013. Of course, my thoughts and views as well as the merits of the case as presented in court by witnesses, together with the findings of the judge as to what happened at that particular busy taxi rank in Daveyton, is by now, neither here nor there as the matter is already water under the bridge. I have to, however, argue that my views and sympathies pertaining to this case tends to differ because of what I’ve gathered from the local bush-telegraph and my life experience as a townshipborn-and raised street-wise South African male. It goes without saying that Masia was not a South African and thus unwise and uncouth in his knowledge of the unwritten rules of township etiquette when dealing with the men and women in blue. In my opinion he committed a cardinal sin and paid with his life. Yes, of course the cops may have erred and none

of us reading this column know exactly what really happened inside the cell after the Mozambican was finally restrained and detained at the local police station. But, to me and many others who think as I do, it is the volatile situation and eruptive reaction of the group of unruly Mozambican traders at the taxi rank that agitated the cops as they tried to arrest Masia for a minor traffic violation. It was in fact the Mozambican taxi driver’s violent resistance to arrest which later turned the whole situation into what has since become presented in court as police brutality and essentially tilted the scales against the eight Daveyton policemen. But, in my mind, the very crowd of traders who cheered

and joined in the fracas by throwing objects at the cops, before the arrest took centerstage, should have been in the dock alongside the convicted eight cops. Instead of pelting the cops with objects and thus attempting to assist or encourage a suspect to flee from lawful custody, the traders should have acted like any self-respecting law abiding citizens and joined the cops in arresting the taxi driver for breaking the law and resisting arrest. Of course, had this been the case, Masia would have been transported to the same police station where he later died but perhaps he would have only been charged and kept overnight. Better still, knowing the ways of life in our townships, had the Mozambican simply greased the palm of any of the arresting cops on the scene, the whole incident would have evaporated into thin air and life would have carried on as before. Now the over zealous police officers who were on duty trying to rid the streets of Daveyton of law-breakers like Masia on that fateful day, are themselves facing the bleak prospect of spending the rest of their condemned lives behind bars.

Children learn by example BE careful what you say and do in front of your children because children learn by example. It is important for parents to understand that anything they do in front of their children will either negatively or positively impact the minds of their children. This is why as adults and

parents we need to be careful of what we do, say and display in the presence of our children and their peers. It is often the so-called insignificance things that our children see us do and say in their presence, that make them the people they become when

I read the news of the new joint-venture with excitement and apprehension, all at once. Firstly, the excitement came as a result of watching this small venture leap into being one of the finest privately-owned publications over the years for the people of Kathorus. I personally have nothing but high praise for the

editor of Kathorus MAIL, Mr Khumalo, for his vision and hard work. I really feel proud to see the success and growth of Kathorus MAIL with its joint-venture with Caxton, whose experience in the industry, combined with Mr Khumalo’s editorial experience in journalism, can only grow Kathorus MAIL to greater heights. I have

faith in this venture and I pray that God will help it succeed. Good luck and long live the spirit of community journalism, long live Kathorus MAIL, long live Zaid Sipho Khumalo. Adelaide Mbambo, Phake Section, Katlehong (Letter via smartphone)

Thank you Mr Khumalo and your team Last week Wednesday I received the Kathorus newspaper at my doorstep. Going through the newspaper ,I discovered that you came into terms with Caxton. I think that was a great achievement. In a sense, this is also going to create employment for our

children who cannot find jobs anywhere; productivity of the newspaper is also going to increase. Everybody in Kathorus and the surrounding areas will now be able to read the newspaper. The events which take place in our neighbour-

hood will be known. Lots of information will easily reach the community. Thank you Mr Khumalo and your team, that was a great achievement. Tsele Matsuma, Chairperson - Indaba Vibes, Kathorus

Nyaope is destroying SA’s youngsters The destruction caused by the drug “nyaope” on the country's young people will have to be stopped soon before it causes more harm and danger to the rest of society. It has become obvious that the drug “nyaope” is the cause of a majority of petty crimes committed by

unemployed young people in the townships. And unless authorities take drastic steps against dealers who trade and supply the drug, society and the government could be faced with a bigger problem in rehabilitating the growing numbers of nyaope addicts, especially with the call to

legalise the drug. In fact, the reckless call to legalise nyaope should be taken with a pinch of salt, nipped in the bud and stopped in its tracks by social activities and other role players, including the police. Lesley Ntoane, Mzamo Acres, VOSLOORUS.

Help me find out what happened to my husband EARLIER this year on Wednesday, January 14, my husband was involved in a traffic collision that claimed his life. The collision happened at approximately 07:48 along the N3 Southbound, close to the Grey Avenue off-ramp.

He was driving a white KIA Sportage with the registration number ARYAN S GP. The other vehicle involved in the collision was a silver Mercedes Benz. It was raining on the day of the incident. My husband, Shaun Sin-

gh, passed away at the scene of the crash and I am still searching for answers. If anyone can shed light on what happened on that fateful morning, please contact me on 011 616 4314 or 083 640 2003. Reena Singh

NOT FIT FOR HUMANS: Children have to make their way to school passing through piles of rubbish and overflowing sewage.

Thokoza Hostel - dirty and dangerous

T

HE THOKOZA Hostel is one of the most dangerous places in the area since the ''war'' between the ANC and IFP during the '80s and '90s and it would seem that things have not changed much since then. The ďŹ ghting between ANC and IFP supporters was called to a halt and, with the peace, residents hoped to have better lives in this area and that they would see some kind of development. But now, in fact, according to many of the residents, who do not want to be named, conditions are far worse. This year the government promised to rebuild the hostel, but the people who are living there say they know these are empty promises. "Through all the years, it has become obvious that government doesn't really care,'' said one of the residents. ''They don't even bother to come and see the conditions in which we are living, but when the elections are near, they come with promises in

order to win votes, then they go back in their fancy cars and we keep on living in the dirt." Another resident said her life was threatened when she wanted to report the ďŹ lthy conditions. "Some of the people in the hostel said they will kill me, because they own the place and no one will tell them what to do," she added. The hostel has become a playground for prostitutes and one told the MAIL that it is not their choice to sell their bodies, but that they are forced to do so because there are no jobs out there and they are starving. "Nothing has changed. During weekends we make lots of money because single men come in numbers, and even the married men," she said. Whether it is the problem of prostitution, terrible living conditions, unemployment -- the fact remains that the Thokoza Hostel is in dire need of some serious work and that the community members are asking for better living conditions and employment.

NO CHANGES: Despite reporting the piles of rubbish that need to be removed, this resident claims nothing is ever done to improve living conditions in the hostel.

ANYTHING FOR A FIX: One addict assist another to get his Nyaope fix.

Nyaope has a chokehold on local communities IT is the word on every concerned parent’s lips, it is the one substance addicts yearn for and it is fast becoming the best selling drug in townships. Nyaope has become known as the silent killer on the township streets and in an effort to know more about the users and the drug, the MAIL hit the streets to investigate. It is clear that the highly addictive nyaope drug is like any other because it ruins and kills at a devastating rate. While among users, you spot those who are suffering from withdrawal symptoms as they get stomach cramps, break out in sweat and vomit. Some say they try to go off nyaope but it is too difficult and most of them cannot afford to go to a rehabilitation centre. With many of the users being homeless, they revert to crime to feed their habit. Getting caught by the SAPS or the community and suffering the punishment of mob justice is no deterrent. The addicts are in need of a fix and claim they will do anything to get it. There are users who smoke nyaope with a mixture of dagga and others inject the

Church donates sanitary pads to young girls

T

EENAGE girls from Ikusasalethu Primary School in Extension 28, Vosloorus, received sanitary pads from the local Methodist Church’s women. As part of their mentoring and educational programme, the women, wearing their red and white Methodist Church uniform, sat with the teenage girls as if they were their own daughters and gave them advice about cleanliness and general personal hygiene before hand-

ing out sanitary pads. By the time nurse Zandile Gaga had finished her hygiene talk, there was no doubt in the eyes of these young ladies that their Saturday afternoon had been well-spent. Gaga emphasized the importance of cleanliness to the girls and urged those who have no mother-figures at home to speak to the teacher and the principal about their problems instead of bottling it up. “I welcome the interaction

because some of these girls are orphans and don’t have mother-figures at home,” said the school’s principal Kabonina “Tukkie” Mabanga. Since opening its doors in 2012, Ikusasalethu Primary School has grown from 854 learners to just over 1 348 this year. “Our pass rate speaks volumes about our standard of education, together with the discipline and education we provide to our learners,” added Mabanga.

Cope accuses cops of bail scam A fortnight ago, members of Cope held a protest march in Phola Park, in Thokoza. Members of the SAPS arrived and arrested eight members of the organisation, who were subsequently taken to the Thokoza Police Station, where they were charged with holding an illegal protest and locked up. However, once inside the cells, they were approached by a police official who promised to secure their bail. According to Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem, the policeman told the eight arrested Cope members that he could secure bail for them on payment of a sum of a R1 000 each. “The officer then indicated that he had a lawyer on hand who could assist the eight with their bail application,'' he explained. ''He then gave our members his cell phone and asked them to call their families to raise the money.” Bloem told Kathorus MAIL

that the Cope members were then driven to the Vosloorus Police Station, where they were to meet with the alleged lawyer. At the police station in Vosloorus, five of the eight Cope members were each asked to pay the bogus lawyer R1 000 to secure their release. The other three were forced to spend the weekend in a prison cell because they could not afford to raise the R1 000 required by the “lawyer”. On the Monday, all eight accused appeared at the Magistrate’s Court and they were all released on a warning. “In fact, the magistrate was surprised to hear that five of the accused had already been released, after they paid R1 000 each for bail,” said an irritated Bloem. “We are definitely not going to allow this matter to disappear. We were encouraged by the reaction of the head of the Thokoza Police Station, Col Baloyi, who has refused to have

the matter investigated by his own detectives at the station. ''He immediately called investigators from Provincial Police Headquarters, who arrived promptly and started compiling statements from the eight Cope members.” Cope’s provincial leadership have also issued a joint statement, in which they said it was clear that the police are operating a bail scam and that this practice appears to be widespread. Bloem said Cope calls on the Minister of Police and senior management to enquire into this specific matter urgently and to request information from all police stations to establish whether similar bail scams were occurring at their stations. “Crooked police will turn South Africa into a banana republic; we await a response from the Minister, who will be also be copied in on this statement," Bloem said.

African Apostolic Church steadily growing TOGETHER IN PRAYER: One of the largest growing religious groups in South Africa, the African Apostolic Church, originally founded in Zimbabwe, is steadily gaining ground locally with branches in just about every major city and township around the country. The church, whose members hold their prayer meetings in open spaces, is often mistaken for the Shembe congregants, who also dress in white and hold their prayer meetings in an open veldt.

KHANYISILE Phiri, a grade three learner from Eden Park Primary School, is a maths wonder girl. On August 12 she obtained a second place in the Ekurhuleni District Mental Maths Challenge held at Umtholo Primary School. First position was taken by Nelly Mbungu of Greenfields Primary School and third position by Lungisani Primary School’s Rethabili Tsotetsi. “We are very proud of Khanyisile’s achievement. She will be going to the district challenge in September and we are all looking forward to the challenge. She improves daily,” said Mrs KS Ntlatseng, the head maths teacher.

Africa’s best to defend world titles Uncivil War: Boxing championship fight to be broadcast live on SuperSport

P

OUND-FOR-POUND number one in the world, Hekkie Budler, has put his world titles on the line and will be defending them against countryman, Simphiwe Khonco, in the Uncivil War boxing extravaganza. Uncivil War, presented by Golden Gloves Promotions, will take place on Saturday, September 19, at Emperors Palace. Budler will defend his WBA and IBO minimumweight championship belts in this longawaited bout. “It was difficult to get anyone in the world to come out and fight Budler, but we have turned to South Africa and have found a very capable boxer in Khonco, from the Eastern Cape, who will try his hand in this fight,” said Rodney Berman from Golden Gloves Promotions. It will be Budler’s first defense of his titles in South Africa since he returned from successfully defending his titles in Monte Carlo. For the first time in six fights, Budler will also face a local rival after successfully defending his title against Nkosinathi Joyi in a classic encounter. Khonco is ranked WBA number 10 while Budler will be defending his title for the 10th time in a row. Coming to the party will be Southerners Jason Bedeman and Paul Kamanga. These two will be the main undercard in a junior-welterweight bout. Popular light-heavyweight, Ryno Liebenberg will be back in business when he takes on the number four rated Makhosandile Zwengu for the vacant South African title. Returning to South Africa is Roman Zhailauov, Kazakhstan junior-welterweight, to fight Thompson Mokwana. Also featuring at Uncivil War is Irish amateur champion, Gary Sweeney who trains out of the Colin Nathan’s camp, Hot Box. Tickets are available at Computicket or the Emperors Palace Box Office.

British Council introduces the code of rugby to JRA THE British Council, in partnership with Premiership Rugby, Footprints Foundation and the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU), are piloting the Try Rugby community coaching programme in the South. On Friday, August 28, these partners introduced rugby to the women who attended the Johannesburg Road Agency’s (JRA), Women’s Day celebration at the Turffontein Racecourse.

The British Council and two of its professional coaches from the UK, Joe Reynolds and Sam Teasdale, took the opportunity to teach the value of playing rugby to the women. The Try Rugby pilot programme marks the culmination of national Women’s Month and the imminent start of the 2015 Rugby World Cup (RWC). GLRU fields women’s sides, in both the junior and senior provincial South African Rugby Union
