Senzo murder mystery deepens as cop quits T

he Senzo Meyiwa murder mystery seems to have deepened into an interesting, intriguing thriller following the recent unceremonious resignation of the top cop assigned to investigate the long-drawn probe into the killing of the former Bafana Bafana captain and Orlando Pirates’s goal-keeper last October. Award-winning top female cop Capt Joyce Buthelezi of the Hillbrow Family Violence and Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, who is investigating the case, is reported to have walked out of her assignment as the investigating officer in charge following a “procedural” disagreement with her SAPS seniors over the case at the police headquarters in Pretoria a fortnight ago. The once popular soccer star died from a gunshot fired under mysterious circumstances on the night of October 26, 2014, at the home of his girl-friend Kelly Khumalo’s mom’s house in Mzamo Acres, in Vosloorus. Present inside the house that night were Senzo’s girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo, her sister Zandi, Longwe Twala – son of “bubble-gum” musician and producer, Chico Sello Twala, together with two of Senzo’s friends, Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Twala. Following the murder, the five told the police that Senzo was shot during a scuffle with a gunman who was part of a

gang of robbers who had “gatecrashed” into the house. Several weeks later, a young man who was a “car-washer” in the neighbourhood was “fingered” as Senzo’s killer and arrested by the police. The young Zanokuhle Mbatha, made several appearances at the Boksburg Magitsrates Court before his case was struck-off the roll and he was set free by the judge. Zamokuhle Mbatha has since lodged a R10-million law-suit against both the Minister of Police Nathi Nhleko and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) respectively for what he said was his “wrongful arrest” and false implication by the police in a murder he did not commit. Mbatha is also claiming “damages” for what he said was the stigma and the trauma of having been labelled a “killer” and a “murderer” after his name was linked to Senzo’s killing. The teenage Vosloorus carwasher spoke about his fears for his life after he was released from detention where he spent 13 days being interrogated by detectives for the murder he did not commit. He described the experience as the most frightening in his life. After Mbatha’s release, the cops seemed to have ran out of steam and ideas on how to continue with their probe into the Senzo Meyiwa murder case. At one point after a long lull of silence, they claimed their work was being “hindered”

by the murdered soccer star’s family who were sharing the information the police were disclosing to them with the media. On the other hand, Senzo’s father, Samuel Meyiwa, blamed the police for “dragging their feet” in pursuing what he said were vital leads at their disposal about his son’s murder. In an interview with a leading national news magazine, Meyiwa Snr, disputed the evidence given by the five witnesses who were present inside Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s house in Mzamo Acres on the night his son was shot and killed. He also rejected the claim that Senzo died during a scuffle with an armed gunman during a botched armed robbery conducted by unknown criminals. Instead, Meyiwa Snr told reporters that his son’s murder was the result of an argument that ensued inside the house and was witnessed by all five people present in the house that night. Police sources told Kathorus MAIL that it was this “grey area” in the investigations about what really happened on the night Senzo Meyiwa was murdered which has led to the investigating officer Capt. Buthelezi pulling out of the investigation. They claim that it was during a meeting with her seniors at SAPS Headquarters about progress in her investigations that she was reportedly

Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates soccer star Senzo Meyiwa with his lover Kelly Khumalo before his death. Photo from Pixicooler.com. refused permission to have all five witnesses arrested and charged with “perjury” and “defeating the ends of justice” by withholding information pertaining to Senzo’s murder. It is believed Col Buthelezi’s strategy was to use the arrest of the five as her first step towards finding a solution to solving the murder of Senzo Meyiwa.

Senzo Meyiwa and Kelly Khumalo were on a Sport TV show hosted by Robert Marawa on Supersport 4.

both the EMPD and SAPS, keep what is happening in Etwatwa under close scrutiny and make sure that those responsible for this bloody mayhem in the township are brought to book as soon as possible and that the ensuing violence is curbed before more innocent lives are lost. Perhaps both units could re-visit the dreaded necklace method now being re-introduced by the vigilante groups fighting their young criminal opponents in the area. South Africans are quite familiar with what this form of brutal mob justice has done to our country’s image both locally and internationally. IS MILITARY CONSCRIPTION THE ANSWER? I’ve never stopped wondering why vocational training and military conscription for youths when they turn 18, was discontinued under the new dispensation. Just think of all the wonderful things today’s youth, both girls and boys would

be benefitting from with vocational training as well as military conscription. First, we would be having less of the many social ills that young people especially black youths are caught up with in the townships and this includes a decrease in gangsterism and violence. Secondly, there would be less pregnant teenage mothers in our schools and less male teenagers falling prey to drugs and crime. I believe that by re-introducing both vocational training and the army conscription into the lives of the country’s youth, as a nation we stand a chance of moulding better young men and women in our communities than when we try to repair these broken young men and women later in life. South Africa will have to create a life-skills program from which the majority of the country’s youth will be able to benefit from instead of ignoring them and thus making them easy prey for drug-dealers and crime gangs. There’s not a single doubt in my mind that the introduction of both the vocational training and the military conscription for the country’s youth would turn the tide both on the crime and drug issues in this country and perhaps also create a better landscape for the future of the country and its people.

young women will not be normal again. My advice to them is that before you start flirting with boys at your young age, it is best to turn your focus on your education and a better future. Please girls, stop disgracing yourself and your families by having a fatherless child out of wedlock. Evelyn Sithole Marimba Gardens Vosloorus

I find it disturbing that young girls in the townships do not seem to understand the negative impact having a baby out of wedlock will have on their lives. Many of these young girls only find out later that a child born out of marriage can cause more harm to their young lives than the false pleasure they often believe a baby will bring to their miserable lives. It is a fact that the lives of these

ings attributed to the gang and its activities warrant prompt and decisive action from both the police and the community. My main concern at this stage is that this is something that should not in the first place have been allowed to sprout out of the ground and result in the kind of anger and violence it has managed to arouse among the locals and peace loving South Africans in general. Looking back, it is a wellknown fact that gang violence and gangsterism have always been part of the culture of turf-wars and bullying among township criminals. However, what is even scarier with the Etwatwa happenings, is that, unlike in the past when these gang-wars were waged by criminal adults, the Etwatwa brutal and violent debacle is, according to mayor Mondli Gungubele, about the dreaded nyaope drug. But to the Etwatwa residents and their children it does not really matter nor make any difference now whether the brutal gangwar being waged by these wayward and ill-disciplined youths is about the local turf or nyaope. The only thing residents undoubtedly want to see now is for the police to take drastic and decisive measures to bring an end to this madness once and for all. It is about time that police crime intelligence units from

UST when we all thought that the frightful and fearsome scourge of township gansterism was a thing of the past, residents of the besieged township of Etwatwa, in Daveyton, have proved that we were all wrong. What is in fact even more fearful about what is happening in Etwatwa, is that these types of township gangs, as we’ve known and experienced over the years in many black residential areas, now involves children as young as 14. Worse still, we are even told that some of the gang leaders are in fact nothing more than adolescents themselves, some hardly older than 30. Adding to this worrying fact is that the Etwatwa community has lashed out at the police, accusing them of siding with the criminals. It is also alleged that some police members have been seen to be too close to the gangsters for the community’s comfort, who are claiming that the police are biased when it comes to issues relating to the so-called OVL gang which has reportedly been terrorising the local community for months. Although it is unclear where these criminal youths in Etwatwa have sprung from to spew their vitriolic criminal activities upon innocent members of the local community, the number of violent and brutal kill-

Watch out for these tricksters

E

VA Alfreds (62) and her brother, who had just received his first grant money, went to Alberton to buy groceries but were robbed of their money by tricksters. Alfreds said clever tricksters took the sibling’s money in a quick scam. “My brother had been waiting for months to receive his first grant and he was excited when he finally did receive it.” According to Alfreds, when they disembarked from a

taxi at Shoprite in Alberton, an unknown man passed them and smeared some wet substance on her arm before disappearing between the parked vehicles. “Suddenly a second guy appeared from nowhere saying the first man took all his money by only touching him.” The man then stopped a vehicle with two occupants who he said were police and could help and protect them from the criminals and that

they needed to get into the vehicle. “The driver asked me to check if I still had the money with me and then asked for the cash and put it in a safe envelope to hide it again.” Once the brother and sister were in the supermarket, Alfreds opened the envelope and found only paper inside. “Please warn all the pensioners about these tricksters,” said a tearful Alberts.

Eva Alfreds (62) of Ariel Street in Eden Park was robbed by tricksters who pulled a scam on her and her brother.

Schools show support for a good cause CASUAL Day was celebrated at several Eden Park schools earlier this month as a way to show support for people with disabilities. Almost all the schools in the area participated by selling stickers to pupils. Veronica Flemmer, school

principal of Talitha Stimulation Centre in Eden Park, said the school has been involved with Casual Day activities for the past 21 years and has been very successful due to the help they receive. "The stickers we supplied to Eden Park Secondary School

were all sold and we are grateful to the teachers and pupils. "The school raised and handed over a cheque for R5 588.80 for our Gearing Into Action campaign. "We thank all the pupils for their support," Veronica said.

Mob justice - you can run but you can’t hide

T

HOKOZA residents took the law in their own hands and handed down mob-justice when a suspected thief was subjected to a public beating on Sunday, August 23. It is alleged that the man was caught stealing tekkies and, according to bystanders who did not want to be named, he is well-known for stealing in Thokoza Extention One. The man was identified as allegedly being one of the most wanted thugs in Thokoza. Some residents wanted their pos-

sessions, that he had allegedly stolen, to be returned. A young girl who spoke to the Kathorus MAIL claimed that the man had stolen six cellphones from her house, as well as a sound system and bags. After suffering a severe beating he pretended to be dead, hoping that the crowd would stop the attack, but some residents continued striking him until he started bleeding and sustained some broken bones. The angry community also took their time before calling the police, saying they had taken the law into their own

hands in the belief that ''these thugs get arrested, but always come back the next day''. The suspect told the police that he had done nothing wrong, but he was found with the tekkies he was accused of stealing. Members of the community claimed that this was not the first time he was beaten for the crimes of which he was accused. A case has been opened and is being investigated by the police. The MAIL will keep our readers updated.

Residents raise concerns at Imbizo

R

ESIDENTS gathered in large numbers to raise their concerns at the Mayoral Imbizo hosted in Katlehong and Vosloorus on August 19 and 20. Ekurhuleni Mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele and the city manager, Khya Ngema, visited Katlehong and Vosloorus for the Mayoral Imbizo that followed a walkabout by the Mayor and senior city officials. This walkabout is part of the Back to Basics Programme which aims to close the gap between service delivery and community needs. Ward councillors of the affected wards were present to ensure that people knew who were responsible to represent them and their problems in council. During the Imbizo, community members raised their main concerns which included human settlement problems and the Thina Sonke housing projects which have not been handled to the satisfaction of the community. People have been waiting for houses since 1994. Hostel dwellers also voiced issues related to housing such as the nonspending of the repairs and maintenance budget at the hostels and the absence of planning to upgrade the hostels. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) was criticised for the process and implementation of planned evictions at the hostels. The community highlighted issues of public safety and emphasized that there has been an increase in crime and that faulty street lights were a contributing factor. The community informed the

Mayor and his team that patrollers in the urban marshal programme are not being paid and this is seriously affecting their commitment to public safety and working with other law enforcement agents to reduce crime. Problems with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) which go hand in hand with much needed development in the area and employment opportunities, were also raised. According to residents the lack of development and employment results in the increase in crime. August was women’s month and the plight of women enjoyed much attention and concerns were raised about grandmothers and daughters that are raped. The community also expressed concern about people and children who go missing and wanted to know how they could benefit from the Minthiro Ya Vula Vula program as Ekurhuleni procurement practice does not favour local business. The Mayor advised that targeted procurement would benefit locals and is specifically aimed at youth, women and people with disabilities. This program would also support community initiatives to reduce unemployment and related problems of gangsterism and drugs. The community agreed that drugs are a problem, especially among the youth and indicated that nyaope and dagga are freely available in areas where youth are present. The Mayor informed residents that the Human Settlements Department is currently planning to address the housing needs of Kathorus and

HEAR US! Halls were packed with residents who wanted to share their concerns at the recent Mayoral Imbizo in Vosloorus and Katlehong. the southern region of Ekurhuleni. Metro officials informed residents that there were currently not enough suitable land to build houses and therefore the Metro is in the process of buying suitable land for the development of sustainable human

settlements in the next five years. Officials also informed residents that money was being allocated in the 2015/2016 budget to address the service delivery needs of the community. The Mayor advised the community that the hostels will be

upgraded and fixed within the framework of the budget. Residents were also informed that EMM will pay door to door visits as part of the Back to Basics Program to get information on residents’ needs and to meet their service delivery expectations.

Teach SA is recruiting graduates SIR John Adamson High School teacher, Khethiwe Radebe, is proud to be the ambassador of Teach South Africa, an NGO that was formed in 2005 to recruit graduates to teach in previously disadvantaged schools. Khethiwe is part of a group of graduates who either left the private sector to join the teaching profession, or joined immediately after graduating. Teach SA recruits graduates who hold a Bachelor or Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Commerce degree to teach in English, Mathematics and Science in historically disadvantaged schools. This process contributes to strengthening the South African education system, increases literacy rates and empowers children with essential and valuable knowledge.

“On Wednesday, July 22, I represented Teach South Africa on e.tv’s breakfast show, Sunrise. The panel interview was focused on the impact that Teach South Africa has in providing competent and passionate teachers and on the Funza Lushuka bursary provided by the Department of Education,’ she said. To date, Teach SA has trained and placed 340 graduates and over 50 percent of these graduates have continued to teach beyond their two year contractual period. The Teach SA recruitment drive is currently underway and interested graduates are invited to undertake the online application process at www. teachsouthafrica.org. Successful candidates will be placed in schools in the 2016 academic year.

BACKYARD DWELLERS: Backyard dwellers from Eden Park, Phola Park and Palmridge met to discuss their housing problems. INSPIRING: Sir John Adamson High School is very proud of Teach SA ambassador Khethiwe Radebe for her level of commitment, and for recruiting competent and passionate teachers to historically disadvantaged schools.

Backyard dwellers demand houses A GROUP of residents, calling themselves ''a concerned community living in backyards'', congregated in Eden Park recently, for feedback concerning a memorandum delivered in August. This memorandum was delivered to the Department of Human Settlements under the leadership of Saras Freeks, and reflected the concerns and grievances of backyard dwellers, who feel they are being sidelined by the ANC government for which they voted. The residents also raised their concerns about the 873 housing units currently being built in Eden Park, from which they will not benefit. They requested the Depart-

ment of Human Settlements assign 250 of the 873 units to Eden Park's backyard community. "We, as ANC members of Ward 58, went door-to-door to consult all the backyard residents. Since our democracy, we realised that we are the fourth generation who are still struggling with a housing problem," said Freeks. "We asked for a meeting with our ward councillor to discuss subsidy applications, but the meeting never took place. We have now sent a letter to Gauteng Premier David Makhura, to meet us as soon as possible." Clr Robert Pienaar was consulted by the MAIL, concerning the matter, and he said the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan

Municipality (EMM), together with the Department of Human Settlements, had met with and explained to community leaders and committees that the units currently being built are for plots with existing shacks. "Residents were advised to register with the Housing Department," he said. Xoliswa Mkhalali, of Human Settlement Resources, said the memorandum stated that it had been referred to the MEC for Human Settlement, Jacob Mamabolo, for his attention and response. She also stated that the houses under construction at present already have people on the stands, as implemented by the EMM.

True United Church needs donations THE small congregation of the True United Christ Church is in need of building material to build a new place of worship. The True United Christ Church has been in existence for over 40 years and has long operated from a shack in Palmridge Extension Seven, but after the passing of

their founder, bishop PS Radebe, the congregation was requested to vacate their holy shack in Mbuluzi Street. The congregation found an area to build a larger place of worship. “We have the manpower for the labour. All we need is for people to donate old building material,” said Pastor

Dumsani Mathintela. People or organisations wishing to help can contact Mathintela on 079 0499 512, Sethunya on 073 282 1917 or Pastor Ladies Kaholong on 078 2928 990. Visit www.kathorusmail.co.za to view a gallery and a video of the church.

SUPPORT ON THE HOME FRONT: Rhema Varrie’s family and the Edenpark community is rooting for him. Dad Larry, mom Stellouise, five-your-old sister Hadessah and Larry Jr are very excited about him being in the top 10 of IdolsSA.

Edenpark’s star shines bright

R

HEMA Varrie from Edenpark has made it to the top 10 in the IdolsSA competition and the whole of Edenpark is delighted. Speaking to dad Larry, mom Stellouise, his brother Larry Jr and his five-year-old sister Haddessah, it is clear that the family’s life has already changed quite a bit since the beginning of the Idols season. “Random people just start screaming in shopping centres when they see Rhema and everyone wants to have their photos taken with him” says Larry.

Part of Rhema’s success is the ambience he creates when he sings. “Quite a few people say that they cry when they watch Rhema sing, it touches them and they root for him because of it. This is what he was born to do” says Larry. Rhema has been living in the Idols house in Randburg for a month now and he enjoys it. “He loves to be with people, but he still misses home,” said Stellouise. The family has met the other top 16 contestants and say they are all down to earth people. Thami, who was in the top 16, has adopted the Varrie

family as his own after they showed him kindness and support. Larry Jr, who has started a band playing mostly jazz, says he would be over the moon if his brother won. “It is his dream, he wants this and I want what is best for him. In my eyes he is already a winner and he makes me proud.” If you want to vote for this humble young man, call *120*33033# or sms 37460. On WeChat, Mnet app or the IdolsSA website the voting is free and equals 500 votes. Keep this man in the contest and cast your vote today.

Plan to celebrate traditional healing “BEING sangomas of an informed generation and the regular workshops we have with professional nurses and doctors equip us with the ability to identify symptoms of illnesses like TB, HIV and AIDS which we cannot treat.” These were the words of Gogo Leah Mhlanga, who was among the African medicine practitioners who gathered in the Thokoza Youth Centre last month to celebrate African Traditional Medicine Day in partnership with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM). African Medicine Day is celebrated nationally on Au-

gust 31, and in her keynote address Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, Clr Makhosazana Mabaso, highlighted the importance of cooperation between health practitioners in order to achieve a 60 percent drop in new HIV infections by 2016. “Our patient is your patient as well and as health practitioners aimed at saving lives we need to organise ourselves. So many stereotypes exist about traditional healers and their medicines because of the bogus traditional African medicine practitioners out there,” said Mabaso.

“Today is about updating our database so we know who we are working with and so that we can invite you to workshops where we can share ideas on how we can begin to understand the healing dynamics of traditional medicine and regulating African traditional medicine in Ekurhuleni.” The MMC also presented a banner to the Ekurhuleni AIDS Council to signify that the municipality acknowledges African traditional medicine practitioners and is determined to work together towards achieving a healthier Ekurhuleni.

Amathwasa initiates perform a dance ritual during the recent African Traditional Medicine Day ceremony hosted by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality at the Thokoza Youth Centre.

ASIDE from the fact that I spent most of the Red Bull X-Fighters weekend in sheer awe of the skill and utter bravery of the twelve men who made up the X-Fighters spectacle, there was a rather important little car on show. The event was of course the rst public unveiling of the new Toyota Aygo outside the Union Buildings in Tshwane. The new car is certainly more dramaticlooking than the old model; the front-end for example has a large “X” running across it, a rather apt car

for the Red Bull event then. The new model is a ve-door for the time being and features a 51kW 1.0-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated motor, which Toyota claims makes the little car good for a 0-100km/h sprint time of under 15 seconds while using a claimed 4.4 litres/100km. The of cial launch is in October so we won’t be going into too much detail regarding this city car until we get a chance to drive one. Toyota told us to expect features such as Bluetooth functionality, auto-lock door, electric front windows and air-conditioning. •ad

Be cautious of scammers at lling stations “I just want to caution everyone… this guy and others like him are professional scam artists. They spin you a story that tugs at your heart strings; they present themselves in such a way that you just have to believe them...”

- Justin Jacobs

Be careful when stopping at public places, there are scam artists waiting. Photo: Newspress ALL OF us have - at some point or another encountered a beggar on a street corner or in a built-up area. It is our compassionate side that gives in and we give them some money to help them along their way. I don’t have a problem with this, but what I do have a problem with, is when scam artists use that compassionate side to rob us of our hard-earned money. A few years ago, I came across a young man at a lling station in Pretoria who approached me and told me that he wasn’t a beggar. He introduced

himself, was well dressed and well presented. He continued to tell me about how the ATM machine swallowed his bank card leaving him unable to draw money for fuel. He told me that his dad is a farmer and would be disappointed if he found out that he was asking for money. He asked me for some money for fuel, which I gave him. It was after this that another older man appeared. This fellow told me that the same guy was at the lling station, the day before, spinning a story about the fact that the ATM machine had swallowed his card

and he needed money. The young man denied that it was him but the older man mentioned facts about the young man’s story. I realized that it was a scam and demanded my money back. The younger guy became very agitated and started threatening me. Anyway, I got into my car and as I tried to leave, he tried to open my door. He was highly agitated and was looking for a ght, because I took the money back. About a year or so later, I was at OR Tambo International when a familiar, well-dressed young man approached me; he said he wasn’t a beggar and that the ATM had swallowed his card. I immediately recognized him. He told me that his dad is a farmer and that I can phone him to con rm. He even pulled out a new iPhone to show me that he had money and that he wasn’t a beggar. I confronted him and explained to him that he had pulled this on me before; he denied my accusation. In a raised voice, I started telling him speci cs, which got the attention of the police. The young scammer quickly scampered off. They say lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place, well how about three times? Just last week, I stopped at a lling station on Tom Jones Street in the East Rand and guess who came knocking on my window? Yes, the man with no money for fuel. I couldn’t believe my eyes! This guy still didn’t remember me. I got out of my car and let him continue with his story. He told me that the ATM machine had swallowed his card and he needed money to get back home. He told me that his dad is a farmer. He drew my attention to his R1 899 pair of shoes and his iPhone, convincing me that he wasn’t a beggar. He told me that his name was Hennie. I asked him if he remembered me and he said he didn’t. I told him that I remember him and I remember his story. I made a big scene at the lling station. I called him out on his lies, which got the attention of the people at the lling station. He backed away and quickly left the area. I just want to caution everyone… this guy and others like him are professional scam artists.

They spin you a story that tugs at your heart strings; they present themselves in such a way that you just have to believe them, then, they take your money and move on to the next kindhearted person. They can also get pushy and persistent. If someone like this approaches you and starts spinning you this story or one similar, call them out on it. They move across Gauteng making money off the hard-working public. Unfortunately, we live in a time where people will do and say anything to get and take whatever it is you have, without a shred of integrity. •ad

Mega performance from development boxers Fighting for Angels: Terminally ill benefit from action-packed bill

D

EVELOPMENT boxers proved that they are far from being on the ropes when they took centre stage at a well organized boxing bill. The Fighting for Angels boxing tournament took place on Friday, July 24, and was organised by Southern Box Office in conjunction with the Hellenic Community of Germiston. The seven bill tournament also featured the comeback of heavy weight prospect, Osborn Machimana. He took on Modimba Mugaben in a ten rounder and relying on his flair from the past, he proved too much for his Congolese opponent. Apart for the return of Machimana, who has a record of 28 fights under his belt, the majority of the boxers were debutants with two or three bouts to show for their efforts in the professional ring. Fighting from the Box Office camp under the watchful eye of former boxer, Anton Gillmore, were Willes Baloyi, Clement Kamanga, Michael Mokoena and Rofhiwa Mueme. All had their ups and downs on the evening but made a welcome start to their careers. Trainer Allan Toweel’s boxers, Leron Miles and Vusumzi Nyauza, showed the spectators that they are the future of boxing in the country. Kamanga and Mokoena from the South are prospects for the future who made their intentions in the ring clear by winning their bouts against their respective opponents, Silas Sithole and Lerato Dlamini. The next Southern Box Office tournament will take place on August 7 at the Turffontein Racecourse.

Challenging river rapids help paddlers for Fish River THE Benoni based East Rand Kayak Club hosted the last river race in Gauteng to prepare paddlers for the upcoming A Grade Hansa Fish River Marathon, from the Vaal Dam wall to Three Rivers, a distance of some 33 kms including a number of highly challenging river rapids and 26km of hard flat water resistant hard working grind against the head winds on Saturday September 19. The river races also provide opportunities for paddlers to gain qualifying points for A Grade status in order to participate at the upcoming A grade events, while also providing good mileage for training towards the 46 km first day of the Hansa Fish River marathon which takes place in October in the Eastern Cape. Warren Ziervogel and his partner Martin Sly both members of the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan, and residents in the south of Johannesburg enjoyed their training race and the white water rapids while managing the flat water slog into the wind without strain, finishing in a time of 3:16 as the second Sub Master age category pair and are looking forward to the upcoming Hansa Fish river marathon.

Ertugral, Nxumalo take home awards A JAX Cape Town striker Prince Nxumalo and Muhsin Ertugral, Mpumalanga Black Aces coach, have been announced as the winners of the Absa Premiership August player and coach of the month. The awards were handed to them on Wednesday, September 9. Black Aces enjoyed an impressive start to the 2015/16 Absa Premiership season, securing two victories and a draw in their opening three matches. The Turkish-born coach joined MP Black Aces during the off-season and has performed admirably to lift the morale and invigorate both the youngsters and long-serving players at the club.

Following closely on Aces’ heels in the standings is the Urban Warriors with two victories from three outings. Their good start to the season has been spearheaded by the rejuvenated Prince Nxumalo, formerly with SuperSport United. Nxumalo has hit the back of the net three times in the two comefrom-behind wins for Ajax. He is currently the leading Absa Premiership goal scorer with three goals. The judging panel felt that the Durban-born striker has stood head and shoulders above his peers during the first rounds of the campaign. Nxumalo has not only netted the goals but also allowed his teammates to feed off him as the target man, which has worked wonders for Ajax.

AWARDS: AJAX Cape Town striker Prince Nxumalo and Muhsin Ertugral, Mpumalanga Black Aces coach.
