Father gets life for rape A
VICTIM: The incestous child who was only 5-years-old when he was murdered by his father who was sentenced to an effective two life terms plus 25 years in prison.
Thokoza man, who violently murdered the five-year-old child he fathered, following an incestuous relationship with his sister's then 13-year-old daughter, was sentenced to two lifeterms and an additional 25 years in prison, when he appeared in the Palm Ridge Regional High Court. The boy's battered and mutilated body was found dumped in a yard in Katlehong, in August 2013. It had, by then - according to evidence led before Acting Judge Delize Smith - decomposed to such an extent that it took members of the Ramokonopi SAPS’s Child Protection Unit several months to finally identify the boy. This could be done only after a painstaking facial reconstruction by the police’s forensic department, at the government mortuary in Germiston. Details of the rape of the young teenage mother and the subsequent violent and brutal murder of the couple’s son, in August 2013, emerged during the trial in which the accused was described by the judge as being “evasive with the truth”. According to evidence led during the trial, the
young unmarried mother, who cannot be named, claimed she was only 13 years old when she was first sexually assaulted by her uncle. She described in court how she was first raped by her uncle, who had lured her into his backyard shack under the pretext that she would be looking after his belongings while he was away for the night. However, according to her, later that evening she was awakened by her uncle's knock on the door. She told the court that when she tried to leave the shack, he blocked her way and demanded that she undress. She then described how the accused had smeared her private parts with petroleum jelly before forcing himself on her without her consent. From then on she was continually raped at gunpoint until she later fell pregnant. After she fell pregnant her grandmother chased her away from the family home, but her uncle found a place for her to stay and later moved in with her and continued to rape her, until a child was born out of their incestuous relationship on January 2008. Several months later, her uncle left her to stay with another woman
in Zonkizizwe and, as she was unemployed, she was forced to take the child to live with his father and his new live-in lover. The lover, who was charged with him for the murder of the child, later had the charges against her withdrawn and turned State witness. During the trial she told the court that the child was constantly abused and assaulted by his father until the fateful day on August 2013, when the little boy was severely beaten by the accused for soiling himself. She added that, after the child had died from the beatings, the accused forced her to neatly dress-up the corpse and then to strap the body on her back. The couple walked towards Katlehong with the dead body, before dumping it in a yard near the railway line. The accused was arrested on July 10, 2014, after evading police for almost 13 months and he and the woman were both charged with the murder. Sentencing the father to an effective two life-terms, plus 25 years for the rape of his niece and the murder of his own young child, Smith, described him as an ''unreliable witness''.

The new Kathorus MAIL venture It all began sometime around early 2001, when Vosloorus resident, Zaid Sipho Khumalo spotted a need for a local newspaper to serve the interests of the communities in the three largest townships in what was then known as the East Rand, Vosloorus, Thokoza and Katlehong. Khumalo dreamed of launching such a newspaper to be the “bridge” between these communities, their municipality, other government stake-holders and local businesses and industries. His dream soon became a reality. The first edition of the Kathorus Mail, with a print order of 20 000, hit the
streets in August the following year. The newspaper immediately took flight being voted the “Best Emerging Community Newspaper” at the Sanlam Community Press Awards only two year later. Since then, with the much valued support of clients, including Clinix Hospitals, Total SA, Springbok Pharmacy, Fair Price and Build-It the paper has grown from strength to strength. Now from the end of July - to even better service its ever growing communities - Kathorus Mail will be taking a giant leap forward by upping its print order per edition
to 55 000 and increasing frequency from monthly to fortnightly. Zaid Khumalo has sold a minority stake in his newspaper to Caxton Local Newspapers to help him to achieve this, but being the majority stakeholder, will remain hands on at the helm. However, exciting further innovations this tie-up has made possible include the launching of the newspaper’s own website www. kathorusmail.co.za shortly and that the newspaper will now be largely home delivered rather than bulk dropped - great news for readers and advertisers alike!
Doing good for Mandela
Beware of bogus Criminals who circumcision hurt children schools
must be hanged
With so many bad stories in the newspapers and on TV about false traditional schools in the townships, I would like to warn young men and boys about falling victims to these unscrupulous operators. I believe it is up to parents to make sure their sons are well informed about these bogus circumcision schools in their neighbourhoods. And in order to avoid being kidnapped by these crooks and end up a victim of a botched illegal circumcision, make sure you always walk around in groups. Avoid drinking or socialising with strangers, because you do not know what will happen to you when you are under the influence of alcohol with strangers. Report all suspicious activities to police and try remember people’s faces and names. Be alert and stay aware of what is happening around you. Cuthberts Ntusi Monaheng Section, Katlehong
Publisher and Editor of the Kathorus MAIL, Zaid Sipho Khumalo, has embarked on a joint-venture partnership with the Caxton Group.
I have heard many different arguments about why South Africa cannot bring back the death sentence, but I do not agree with any one of them. Firstly, any person who goes out of his way to plan and execute a crime against a defenceless child does not need to be treated with any respect. Such people are nothing more than animals who don't deserve to live with human beings. And in my mind, the only punishment for any of these people is the death sentence. That is why I am in favour of the government reinstating the death penalty, especially for people who molest or kill children. Audrey Patterson Villa Lisa, Boksburg
In honour of the late icon, Nelson Mandela, The Dow Chemical Company will copy his kind deeds by doing something for others without expecting anything back. Dow launched its 2025 Sustainability Goals in April this year. One of these goals is to contribute towards community success. Mandela Day is a perfect day to shower someone with kindness and love. For this year’s Mandela Day activity, Dow volunteers will paint an orphanage in Vosloorus, on the East Rand. The houses are is owned by Thokomala – a non-profit organisation that provides a normal home and family environment to orphaned and vulnerable children. Dow is a long-standing supporter of Thokomala, which has been in existence since 2002. Painting of these two houses in Boksburg will alleviate the pressure on Thokomala’s an-
nual budgets for these houses, and also give the house mothers and children the pride and joy of living in a well-kept home. Please join us on Saturday, July 18 at 1068 Njakata Street, Extension 2, Vosloorus, as we work on another sustainable project. About Mandela Day. Nelson Mandela's birthday is on July 18, and the call is out for people everywhere to celebrate his birthday by acting on the idea that each person has the power to change the world. The idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations, in London’s Hyde Park, in 2008, when he said: "It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now." The United Nations officially declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela’s "values and his dedication to the service of
humanity" and acknowledging his contribution "to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world". About Thokomala. In order to recreate a normal family life, up to six vulnerable children are placed in a home within their community of origin, under the care of a foster mother. Thokomala purchases and covers the ongoing operating costs. A social worker is allocated to each family to ensure the highest level of care is provided to the children, as well as to assist with obtaining government child care grants. The children have free access to health care at local clinics and public hospitals. The house mothers are trained, regularly assessed and supervised by the social workers, who submit detailed quarterly narrative and financial reports to Thokomala. Lesego Malete, Dawn Park.
An unemployed graduate’s headache Why is it that, after obtaining a university degree, many graduates are unable to find employment? The only conclusion I can come to regarding this is that there is definitely something wrong with our education system. We are either teaching our children the wrong way or we are not teaching them
what they require in real life to survive. Surely, if the system of education taught to children at schools was right, there would be no need for those who leave school to be employable. Graduates cannot find jobs and are unemployable because what they learn at school is not compatible with what they require to live and survive.

And even if they finally do find a job, the majority of our young black graduates are actually not educated enough to fit in any job situation. Unless we improve the standard of our education, I can only see a bleak and dark future for children who go through our education system. Mmamorena Mokoena Marimba Gardens, Vosloorus

Residents want stadium name change
T
HE name Jacob “Tiger” Motaung will always resonate with affection in the ears and minds of thousands of his ardent soccer fans and followers around the country for many years to come, despite his death from prostate cancer in March this year. The memory of the legendary former Orlando Pirates soccer star, who first made his debut in the game with the local amateur ranks before joining the “Mighty Bucs” where he later carved his name in the minds of sports followers around the country, still evokes emotions among many sports lovers around the township. For hundreds more soccerstarved fanatics in his home township of Vosloorus, nothing more than naming the local stadium after their dead hero will help keep his memory alive. It was in March at the 68-yearold Motaung’s funeral in Vosloorus that the first call to name the local stadium after 'Tiger" – where the local legend is still affectionately called - was initially mooted. Paying tribute to their fallen hero, numerous speakers recalled Motaung’s sportsmanship and prowess with pride and emotion. Many still believe it was "Tiger’s" love for the sport and dedication to
soccer that saw him recruit local youths and nurture them through the professional ranks, which many still hail as his best contribution to the development of the game and the local youth in Kathorus. And now the local branch of the Orlando Pirates Supporters’ Club in the Kathorus area has once again reiterated the call to have the Vosloorus Stadium named after their soccer star and hero. Scores of Orlando Pirates members at the Vosloorus branch have also suggested that a statue be erected in the township in his honour to keep his memory in the minds of his fans and protégés alive and to acknowledge his contribution to the development of soccer in the township. Speaking to Kathorus MAIL, the branch chairperson of the supporters’ club in Vosloorus, Moses “Mosenthal” Tshabalala, said the time has come for local fans and supporters to stand up and honour their own heroes and heroines in the township. “His legacy should not be confined to the memories of his fans and Orlando Pirates followers only, but his legacy as one of the country’s top soccer players should be kept alive and visible for all to see and appreciate,” said Tshabalala. Tshabalala’s view has been ac-
cepted and endorsed by "Tiger’s” family and fans throughout the township. Motaung's son, 30-year-old Tshenolo, told Kathorus MAIL he is overwhelmed with emotion and joy, and thanked those who cherish his late father’s memory and contribution to the game. Tshenolo said the family welcomes any progressive suggestions that would inculcate a commitment to the youths in any of their chosen sporting activities. “I’m lost for words’, he said. Lucky Simelane, secretary of the Vosloorus Local Football Association, and Sipho Maruping, owner of Exodus Club and the “double champions” of the local tournament Diski Nine, jointly said that honouring Motaung would be the right thing to do since the late player was the first local soccer player to be featured in the national professional soccer league. “He should be considered a hero in the township as an all-time soccer legend,” echoed the soccer duo in unison during the interview. Tshabalala, himself a defender of note in his heyday for the now defunct Bushbuck Stars, added the people of Kathorus should take a leaf from the residents of Soweto when it comes to honouring their heroes and heroines.

Five-year-old beaten with broom stick
W
HEN he shrinks back in the arms of his father, while hiding his face, the reality of the emotional scars left on this five-year-old rips through your heart. And his father, still visibly emotionally torn, tells the story of how he realised that his son suffered abuse at the hands of the mother's boyfriend. If it was not for a neighbour's friend, the abuse may never have been reported and this boy could have become another statistic in our society, disappearing as a number among the many unreported cases. Early in June, the father was informed by the mother's neighbour that they phoned for an ambulance to come out and take the little one to hospital. He had been badly beaten and bruises coloured his little body in purple marks. The man accused of the
abuse is the 19-year-old boyfriend of the 28-year-old mother. It takes a while, but eventually the little one tells you, while holding on to the man on whose lap he is sitting, that he was beaten with a ''mopstok'' and ''besemstok'' until it broke. He then he points to his small chest and says: "Hy het my hier getrap". It is also understood that the man put the boy in a cupboard if he was not happy with the child's behaviour. A case was opened at the Eden Park SAPS; unfortunately, a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, instead of child abuse. The father and a community member are in the process of re-registering the case in order for Child Protection Services to take over. Please help: The little one has undergone counselling sessions for the past four weeks with a social worker and now a
psychologist will take over. With the boy now in the care of his father, his immediate family has grown to five, living in a caravan in the backyard of a resident. On this property there is the caravan, four outbuildings and the main house - all in all, the property provides a home to eight families. These circumstances have been described as ''Not ideal for the little one to recover best, especially emotionally''. An appeal is going out to the community to help the family find a more suitable place to live. The father, who was employed until two months ago when his contract with his employer came to an end, only wants the best for his family and wants to see his son grow up in an environment best suited for his recovery. Should you be able to assist, please drop us an e-mail: cvdwalt@caxton.co.za.
SCARRED: Safe in the arms of his father is the five-yearold who was beaten with a mop handle until it broke on his little body. The mother’s boyfriend is the accused in the case.
RECOVERED: Lizel Liebenberg (24) of Abraham Street next to her outside room where a thief entered at sunrise and stole her tablet.
Stolen tablet sold for R80 SHE left the outside room where she lives for only a couple of minutes, but it was enough time for a thief to enter and steal her tablet and other possessions. Lizel Liebenberg (24) stays in an outside room at her parents’ house in Abraham Street. On Monday, June 22, at 06:45 she left her two children in her room to use the bathroom in her parents’ house. “When I came out of my room to enter the house’s front door, there was nobody in the
yard or at the gate. I went into the bathroom for a couple of minutes, and when I returned, I discovered the items were stolen from my room. The main thing was my tablet, which I left on the table,” said Lizel. An hour or two passed and she was still confused by the event. She says she then confronted one notorious young man in the same street, suspecting that he could have been the thief. “Luckily he saw the thief entering our gate. I immediately
confronted the man staying in Corona Street, just a street down from Abraham Street and told him somebody saw him near my room. When I mentioned the police, he agreed to take me to Phola Park where he sold the tablet,” said Lizel. “The tablet is worth R6 000 and he sold it for R80. I got my tablet back and I abandoned my idea of opening a theft case with the police. The thief begged me not to report him and promised he would never do such a thing again.”

FB Yolanda 44; Alberton After being divorced for 8 years, I thank Akeem & his wife Denise for their powerful special prayers that brought back my Ex husband within 3 days, my Ex broke up with his girlfriend & asked me for forgiveness & then requested me to accept him back. Akeem also told me all my porblems without me mentioning a single word to him. I was so surprised because every single detail about me was so true. and by using a special mirror, Akeem also helped my neighbor to see the true faces of the thugs who had stolen their house/property. We were all shocked because we personally knew one of these thugs we had seen in the mirror. Akeem can even show you your enemy live in this special mirror

I was so surprised I had the winning numbers after 5 years of trying & failing to win. also Akeem`s special super magic ring & money wallet helped me to win at the Casinos. I was so shocked when I won the jackpot after jackpot. Now I have paid o ALL my debts & house bond. I wish I had known about Akeem long before, I could`nt have lived such a miserable life.

Luckily I came across Juma Obbo through a friend. He helped me and showed me my enemies through a mirror. He did miracles in my life. He told me all my problems without mentioning anything to him. Fighting for Angels THE Fighting for Angels boxing tournament will take place on Friday, July 24, at the St John’s Hellenic Hall in Primrose. All proceeds will go towards 11 Angels and the Hellenic Community of Germiston Church Fund. Mamelodi Sundowns are national champs 2015 SAFA u.17 Boys National Champs: Bulk of SA players in action
M
AMELODI Sundowns has been crowned the 2015 SAFA u.17 boys national champions after defeating defending champions, Bidvest Wits 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday, July 12. The match looked to be heading for a draw before Keabetswe Mokwena scored a goal, with just
one minute of regulation time left on the clock, following a neat move from the young Brazilians. The goal was enough to hand Sundowns the victory and the title of national champions. Mokwena ended the tournament with seven goals to his name and walked away with both the top goalscorer of the tournament and player of the tournament
awards. Daniel Meyer of Wits, was named the goalkeeper of the tournament. Wits won the first tournament last year at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto. The 2014 tournament produced the bulk of Amajimbos, the current men’s u.17 national team, who will be playing in the
u.17 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Chile later this year. 40 players who took part in this year’s national championships were selected for a training camp where they will get a chance to play against Amajimbos on a yet to be determined date. This match will increase the pool of the national team and also give the
national coaching staff more players to choose from. Gauteng finished third in the 2015 tournament after beating Limpopo 2-1 in the bronze medal battle on Friday, July 10, at the Nike Centre. Individual Awards: Keabetswe Mokwena (Sundowns) Player of the tournamentKeabetswe Mokwena
