King’s visit to quell factions K

ING Goodwill Zwelithini is expected to visit Kathorus on August 16 to witness the signing of a peace deal between the warring factions of hostel residents in the Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus areas. The ongoing peace deal was brokered by the Katlehong SAPS and a delegation of high-level emissaries from the Royal Zulu Palace in KwaZulu-Natal, almost two years after the violent tribal rivalry first erupted. According to SAPS spokesperson Capt Mega Ndobe, the monarch’s visit follows the intervention of the police in a series of violent faction fights between tribal clans from different rural areas in the KZN areas. Ndobe told Kathorus MAIL that the peace deal was reached after King Zwelithini dispatched emissaries to Kathorus to assist the police and the local hostel tribal representatives in ending the violence which had threatened to spread to other hostels around Ekurhuleni and throughout Gauteng. According to Ndobe, the clan rivalry started in the rural homesteads of the warring factions during the 2013 Easter weekend. The fighting moved to hostels around Kathorus three months later when police discovered unidentified bodies around the hostels.

Since August 2013, a number of people have been killed by unknown assailants. Ndobe said the killings initially baffled the police until the victims were traced to different rural homesteads in KZN and several hostels around Kathorus. While investigating the murder cases, detectives made a breakthrough which led to the arrest of several hostel residents. “The involvement of the King’s emissaries and members of the community who were working with the police, helped detectives to bring a speedy resolution to the spate of unknown murders,” said Ndobe. King Zwelithini’s visit is expected to bring an end to the ongoing faction fighting between warring Zulu clans. Ndobe added the royal visit would see scores of the monarch’s subjects converge in large numbers at the Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza. “At this stage, we are still busy with the logistics for the visit,” he said.

VISIT EXPECTED: Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini is expected to visit Kathorus to witness the signing of a peace deal between warring Zulu clans.

to either call or send us messages of goodwill, wishing us well in this new and exciting venture with the Caxton group. Without doubt, it’s during moments like these when one finds the pleasure and encouragement from one’s family and friends, well-wishers and even one’s ‘periodical’ enemies who never fail to spot the good things we do for the betterment of the newspaper and for its readers. We are also proud to say that the merger is definitely on track and firing on all cylinders and that it can only grow and produce better results for both the publication and the people of Kathorus. Without doubt, it is now up to you, the reader, to first ensure that you receive

a copy of your favourite paper on your doorstep with all the interesting and exciting local stories about you and your community. A newspaper by Eden Park for Eden Park I have been living in Eden Park for years now and as far as I can remember, we have only been receiving the Alberton RECORD newspaper that gives the happenings in Eden Park a page or so. Recently I have noticed that we are receiving a different newspaper, the Kathorus MAIL, which also only featured two or three news stories from Eden Park. Eden Park looks small, but it is actually very big and there are daily happenings one can write a front page about - complaints, sports, events, growing talent, warnings and messages that people want to spread that can make Eden Park a better place. We have to wait before a certain story gets

published or even certain warnings. How can we be warned of a situation if we only receive the news late? We are exposed to the happenings of a different place and only one or two stories of Eden Park, which I see as unfair. Nobody may have stood up to say anything about this, but I am a guy who has a passion for writing, a passion for newspapers and as much as the RECORD can be found online, which covers a lot more stories concerning Eden Park, I just feel that a lot of people are not exposed to the latest technology and seem to be missing out. I would love to see Eden Park have its own local newspaper covering sto-

Comment: Thank you for your letter Cheslin. I will try to briefly explain. There are many factors to consider when you bring out a newspaper in a certain area. It is much more than simply gathering stories, filling the pages, printing and delivering a paper. Copies of the RECORD distributed in Eden Park definitely do not reach everyone in Eden Park due to the limited number of copies available to distribute in the area. As for the stories covered,

you have to remember that with every publication we have to try and accommodate every individual’s story, different clubs and organisations, schools etc. from both Alberton and Eden Park. Therefore some stories do stand over. In the Kathorus MAIL (inclusive of the Kathorus areas, Palmridge and Eden Park) we bring you a publication to call yours and to embrace as yours. This is delivered door to door twice a month in Eden Park and bulk drops are done in Palmridge. You have to remember that the same types of crime affect people in our inclusive areas. The same applies to the decisions made by EMM, service delivery etc. In splitting these areas,

chances are much better that news from the different areas will frequent more regularly. Each of these publications have an online version and are available on Facebook. People have access to both of these platforms via their cellphones. Residents are invited to like the Facebook pages of the RECORD and the MAIL and they are most welcome to share notifications, warnings etc. to the community via social media. I sincerely hope that Eden Park residents will see the positives behind this decision and will embrace the Kathorus MAIL as their own newspaper. Carina van der Walt Editor: Alberton RECORD

"Do not blame the quality of the results, blame the quality of the questions." - Veli Ndaba One question I normally ask people who come for my coaching sessions is: "If your kids were to come running to you, to tell you that when they grow up they want to be exactly like you. Would you be happy and proud of them?" Almost all the people I have asked this question said: "No." On asking why they wouldn't be happy, they said they wouldn’t like their kids to repeat the same errors in judgement as them. What is crystal clear from this response is that people know they are not doing their best, they have settled for mediocrity. Some blame the system, politics, weather, taxes,

parents and others even en blame their dogs forr living low lives. You cannot just be casual and only search in obvious places when searching for a key to open the locked door separating you from something that your life depends on. You must search everywhere diligently. I have said it before that most people never achieve their dreams and goals not because they lack resources but because they lack resourcefulness (creativity). You may have always believed that this world owes something (error in judgement), well, let me tell you something for free, this world owes you nothing. I mean

Woman’s family want answers from clinic

I

n the early morning of Sunday, July 12, 25-yearold Nonhlanhla Nyembezi, of Somalia Park, woke up with what she believed were flu-like symptoms and decided to go to the nearby JD Dumane Clinic in Vosloorus for treatment. Now she’s dead and her family are blaming nurses at the clinic for her untimely death. When Kathorus MAIL visited the family of nine in their single-room shack at the informal settlement, the dead woman’s father, Phila Mazibuko, tried to explain his daughter’s strange death after he said she was given an injection by a nurse when she arrived at the JD Dumane Clinic. “On Sunday (July 12) my daughter Nonhlanhla woke up not feeling well and, as family, we urged her to go to the clinic. She then asked her younger brother, Themba (22), to accompany her as the two were very close. When they arrived at the clinic, a nurse took Nonhlanhla to the patient’s room where she (the deceased) told us the nurse gave her an injection,” said an emotional and grieving Mazibuko. Mazibuko explained that Themba was later called into the room by the nurse and asked to come and remove his sister. When he entered, however, he found Nonhlanhla lying on the bed. She couldn’t walk and her brother asked the nurse why his sister was unable to walk on her own. The nurse responded by telling him that the injection was still ‘penetrating’ Nonhlanhla’s body, but demanded that the young man leave with his ailing sister immediately. According to the dead woman’s grieving father, the nurse is said to have asked Themba to help her carry his sister to the gate. where the nurse signalled a taxi and asked the taxi driver to drive the sick woman home. “She asked the driver to drop the sick woman at home while Themba was made to walk back on foot. When the taxi driver arrived with her we were all shocked as we had to carry her from the taxi into the house,” explained the dead young mother's father. When Nohlanhla’s family tried to get answers from her

about her worsened condition, all she could tell them was that the nurse at the clinic had said that she would be ok once the injection took effect. “We didn’t panic then as we thought the nurse knew exactly what she had given her. An hour later, she was still lying on the bed when she suddenly called out for her older sister Phumzile to bring her a bucket in the bedroom as she wanted to urinate,” said Mazibuko. But when Nonhlanhla failed to relieve herself, Phumzile called their mother, Lindiwe, and the two women carried the the sickly Nonhlanhla to the toilet. Even there, Nonhlanhla could not relieve herself and her family realised she was getting worse and called an ambulance to take her to hospital. The ambulance arrived several hours later and took her back to JD Dumane Clinic. “When they arrived with her at the clinic, the nurses gave her two litres of water in a bid to induce her bladder. And when she couldn’t finish the water, they then placed a drip in her body to try and drain the water,” said Mazibuko. The family told Kathorus MAIL they waited several hours for an ambulance to arrive at the clinic to take the dying woman to the new hospital in Vosloorus. According to the family, the ambulance only arrived around 02:00 the next morning to ferry Nonhlanhla to the new Natalspruit Hospital for further treatment. ‘However, she was only seen by doctors at around 16:00 and my wife couldn’t afford to see her daughter in that condition and had to leave the hospital. She arrived home crying and told us what had happened before she left Nonhlanhla with family members and her boyfriend at the hospital. I had planned to go and visit her later in the day, during visiting hours. Unfortunately, just before 15:30, we received a call from the hospital informing us that my daughter had passed on,” said Mazibuko, who pointed out that it’s been weeks since his daughter’s death and he has still been unable to bury her. ‘I have a family of nine, all of us living in this single-room shack and we do not have the

money to bury my daughter. I am blaming JD Dumane Clinic for the death of my child, they killed my child and I'm not scared to say that. I might be able to bury my daughter next week, if God gives me the strength and the means to do so.” Nonhlanhla's two young children, aged three and six, are now being cared for by her grieving family. When approached for comment, the spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, Steve Mabona, told Kathorus MAIL that his department would not be able to issue a comment on the death of Nonhlanhla, because the family had already lodged a complaint with the SAPS. "The Gauteng Department of Health will not be in a position to comment further on the said matter, consequently the family has since lodged a complaint with the police and as such, an inquest docket has been opened to conduct an enquiry on circumstances surrounding the death of Nonhlanhla Nyembezi. The police will be better empowered to comment accordingly," replied Mabona. When a asked for comment, the spokesperson for the Vosloorus SAPS, Capt Piet Rossouw, promised to issue a statement as soon as he had found the relevant information pertaining to Nonhlanhla's death.

SUDDEN DEATH: Nonhlanhla Mazibuko’s mysterious death has baffled her grieving family. An injection she received for flu is said to have led to her death.

STONERIDGE Primary School received a donation of tinned and non-perishable foods for the school’s feeding scheme. Jerseys4Jozi and Black-Mix Communications paid a visit to the school on Thursday, July 30, to deliver the donation. The collection of tinned food was inspired by Edna Kauyla Peterson (10), a grade five learner, who was tasked with raising funds for the feeding scheme and the erection of a steel structure which will eventually become the school hall. On behalf of the school and governing body, the principal,

Richard Carelse, expressed his gratitude to Edna. “Her desire to help those less fortunate with much needed food was just a great deed. I thank all the parties involved and for a good future partnership,” he said. “Our aim was to collect 670 tins for Mandela Day to donate to the Johannesburg Children’s Home, Immaculata Shelter and Stoneridge Primary School in Eden Park,” said Manisha Black, CEO of Black-Mix Communications. “The collected food was gathered by Interact RDT,

Vanessa Grobler from Jerseys4Jozi, Manisha Black from Black-Mix Communications, Blue Pencil, Ingrid Goncalves from Jozi Real Food Market, Talitha Grobler from Hotpod Yoga, Miss Earth SA 2013 Ashanti Mbanga, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, Itayi Chimuka from Mazjo Media and MB Studios. We are thankful to our partners who assisted in making this gesture possible and in bringing smiles to the faces of Stoneridge Primary School pupils,” said Jerseys4Jozi’s Vanessa Grobler.

Long queues at Home Affairs

R IN MOURNING: Family members at the memorial service for the murdered JMPD official, Simon Mabatamela. The service was held at the Rosettenville Junction. Photo: Lucky Thusi.

‘An attack on the police is an attack on the state’ – Zuma PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma visited the family of slain Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer, Simon Mabatamela, in Kathlehong. Simon was killed in the line of duty during an armed robbery in Rosettenville on Monday, August 3. Members of the Buthelezi and Shabalala families, who also recently lost loved ones, joined the Mabatamela family. Zuma conveyed his words of comfort and condolence to all three families, “I have personally conveyed our heartfelt condolences to the three families we visited today. I wish to thank the Mabatamela family for allowing the Buthelezi and Shabalala families to join us in this fashion, it is highly unprecedented during a mourning period and that’s because it’s also highly unprecedented to lose so many members of our police service in a short space of time,” he said. Zuma indicated that the government was committed to arresting and bringing the perpetrators to justice. “We once again appeal to members of the public to help us

bring these criminals to justice as soon as possible,” Zuma said. The president also made a call for members of the police to defend themselves against criminals when they are attacked but emphasised that they must do it within the legal limit. “It saddens us that members of the police die in the hands of criminals in this fashion, particularly as our police come under heavy criticism every time they defend themselves against danger. It’s probably time for us to discuss as a nation, how we want the police to protect us,” he said. Zuma also voiced his concern at the number of both legal and illegal guns in society and expressed concern that guns are in the hands of the criminals. He said government, together with society, must determine how to effectively rid society of guns and assess whether police are sufficiently trained to protect society and the state from criminal onslaughts. “Any attack on the police is an attack on the state and our nation. It is unacceptable and we must work together to stop it.” he said.

ESIDENTS have had it with the lack of service at Home Affairs, resulting in long queues and people having to come back again and again to try to sort out their affairs. Upon arrival at the Alberton Home Affairs office on July 3, the Kathorus MAIL found a very long queue snaking out of the door, almost into the parking area. Pensioners, sickly people, pregnant women and mothers with babies as young as three weeks old stand for hours, waiting in the queues. There are no chairs or special provision made for these people. Eppo Joubert, from Randhart, took a day’s leave to get all his paperwork done – a whole day of lost productivity – and he is only one, representing a multitude of bread winners, some of whom are in sales and do not get paid if they don’t work. Sonja Mcgee has been in the queue with her daughter since 07:00 and it is 12:15. Her face is red and tired. “We are nowhere closer to getting things done,” she says irately. Paulina Bodla and her husband, Wilson, are queuing with their threeweek-old daughter, Zunela, for a birth certificate. No special queue is available and no chair for Paulina to sit on during the long ordeal. René, a pensioner from the area who does not want her surname mentioned, is there to sort out her marriage certificate. “They should have a satellite office and employ more people to assist the masses of people applying for unabridged birth certificates and all the rest,” she says. Corné and Yolandi Mulder, from Albermarle, say it is their fourth time back in three weeks. Their daughter is four weeks old and, since her first week, they have been trying to get a birth certificate. “They don’t tell you exactly what you need so every time you get to the front you get told you need this or that and back you go,” says Corné. ”We only have a month to get this certificate, otherwise we have to go the police and give a statement as to why it wasn’t done in the designated time frame. I just wish they would improve their communication with the public. We were here two Saturdays ago and by then they had closed the doors, even though the sign clearly says 13:00.” The most heartbreaking story is that of Cassius Maphanga. The mother of his children left them with his mother and Cassuis was in and out of the country looking for work. Now his children don’t have birth certificates and Home Affairs demands that the mother has to be present. Cassuis says she just disappeared and neither he nor the children have seen her for years. “My children cannot get

ID books. My daughter cannot write matric and she doesn’t see the need to still be in school as she cannot complete it. They are just becoming numbers in the system. I have contacted so many people and have been to Home Affairs at least 10 times to try to sort this out, but still no luck. My children don’t have a future and I can’t get anyone to help me,” he said.

CHAOS: The lack of communication and service at Alberton Home Affairs is leaving people queueing for hours and some coming back again and again to sort out their affairs. A security officer approached the representive of the Kathorus MAIL and said that photographs and interviews were not allowed, at which time the reporter asked to speak to the supervisor. No supervisor could be found and the representative spoke to a man who did not wish to reveal his name or designation. All he said was: “Speak to the Director General of Home Affairs.”

Communities should be in the frontline in the fight against crime

SASSA OFICIALS: Teleni Ntabeni (general manager corporate), Daphney Feris (acting general manager grants), Themba Matlou (Gauteng regional executive manager) and Matsiliso Chaka (general manager finance).

SASSA clears the air

T

HE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) met with the media on Tuesday, July 21, in an attempt to foster a better relationship with media houses. Key issues that were addressed included areas of payment, unauthorised deductions on beneficiaries’ grants, Easy Pay cards, unenrolled beneficiaries and the foster care project. The Gauteng regional executive manager for SASSA, Themba Matlou, said they wanted to provide information that is correct and accessible to the public. “As pillars of government we want to educate the public and demystify any negative connotation with regards to SASSA and improve media coverage in Gauteng. We need to eradicate the scourge of corruption and fraud. Together with our beneficiaries we will eliminate this

problem,” he said. The services of SASSA are free and they acknowledge that syndicates swindle their system. “As an agency we are taking fraud and corruption problems seriously. We work with the police to combat this and we also discourage our officials and citizens from breaking the law,” Matlou said. SASSA indicated they are on top of the unauthorised deductions on beneficiaries’ grants. They said they never do deductions, however, any beneficiary who suspects any deductions need to come forward in order for the matter to be investigated and a refund administered. The turnaround time for a case like this is three months. Pensioners need to know that if they withdraw their money at any bank, or if they use other cards there will be charges. Beneficiaries need to be

careful with their cellphones as there are people who will take advantage and purchase or register for airtime. SASSA doesn’t provide any loans and recommends that companies who are at fault must be blacklisted. Easy Pay Cards are not SASSA cards and they are not a replacement for SASSA cards either. There are people who lure pensioners to use these cards. If this happens, pensioners need to call SASSA immediately. Remember SASSA cards are replaced only at SASSA premises or at pay points. SASSA is clearing the backlog of foster care children and encourages families with expired court orders to come forward. For more information visit SASSA at 28 Harrison Street in Johannesburg or contact them on 0800601011, 011 241 8300, 078 731 5908, 083 518 3152 or 072 311 3028.

NOTHING beats community intelligence. The most recent incidents of crime in our communities, however, disqualify this statement. What has gone wrong? What are we doing differently? Could it be the individualistic ‘it does not concern me’ attitude? Such an individualistic outlook is of little benefit since tomorrow you might fall victim to a crime too. In response to this social anomaly, the government of Gauteng is resuscitating the ‘Take Charge’ campaign in an effort to fight the scourge of crime in our communities. Information sharing becomes an important prerequisite in ensuring safety in our communities. Pillar three of the newly adopted Gauteng Safety Strategy, emphasises the deepening of community participation and advocates for community intelligence. History has also proven that active community participation does assist in the fight against crime. There are many good stories to tell that bear testimony to the benefit of community tip-offs including the confiscation of mandrax tablets worth R12million rand and the arrest of two male suspects on a plot in Walkerville. These are but some of the incidents that indicate that when we work together we can do more.

DON’T WAIT FOR CRIME: “Let us not wait for crime to be committed against us before we take action,” says Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng. In addition, the community working together with the police, also assisted in the arrest of a suspect in the Taegrin Morris murder case in Reiger Park. Whistle-blowing is the name of the game because all hands should be on deck to eradicate crime in our communities. Community participation is defined by scholars as containing three elements, namely community consultation, community mobilisation and active

community participation. The appreciation of this definition becomes a constant reminder of the significance of community participation in our endeavour to eradicate crime. Certainly, that is not too much to ask from all the citizens of Gauteng. “Let us not wait for crime to be committed against us before we take action,” said Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng.

Council returns from recess BUDGETARY concerns and service delivery discussions dominated the Ekurhuleni council meeting which was held at the Germiston Civic Centre on Thursday, July 30. Mayor Mondli Gungubele spoke to the council about the strategic planning that took place during their recess and dwelt on ways the metro could improve their service delivery record. The mayor sent condolences to the family of Bongani Jwili, an employee of the ICT department and a secretary for the Bavumile Vilakazi zone, and to the family of long-serving police officer Martinus Bann, who was shot trying to assist a neighbour during a house

robbery. Mr Bann’s passing was mentioned as being particularly tragic as he was due to retire in a few months. The mayor also expressed his condolences to the family of Clive Rice. Clr Gungubele condemned the taxi violence that claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman and injured three members of the public. He characterised the violence as senseless and expressed the wish that security agencies move swiftly to arrest the people behind the violence. The Ekurhuleni call centre was highlighted by the mayor and he congratulated the centre for processing it’s one millionth call. Opposition parties

said that the call volume did not reflect how many happy customers exist and councillors expressed that they are still receiving a large volume of calls from residents to request assistance for issues that have not been resolved from the metro’s side. The mayor challenged the opposition councillors to attend meetings where the results of call centre responses were analysed. Mayor Gungubele stated that the disagreement was coming from the side of the Democratic Alliance and that the DA was increasingly becoming irrelevant as the ANC has improved in terms of their response rate and service delivery.

NOT FOR DRINKING: This man, who does not want to be named, is one of many residents who was astonished to see litres of clean water running from the Eden Park reservoir, in Abraham Street, over several days. Water has been bubbling from the control valve since July 16 and by July 22 it was still running. Residents said that they have reported the problem and they are disappointed with the Water Department because the problem has not yet been solved. The RECORD asked EMM for comment on July 23 and July 28 and at the time of going to print, no comment was forthcoming.

Ward 49 hands out food parcels to the elderly MEMBERS of ward 49 in Kathlehong handed out free food parcels to the elderly on Saturday, July 18. Scores of elderly citizens and their families gathered at the Katlehong Art Centre in Phoko Section to celebrate Mandela Day.

Jackson Makaleng, one of the co-organisers, told Kathorus MAIL that the food parcels were distributed to disadvantaged senior citizens who earn less that R3 000 per month. “As a ward we are glad to be hosting a Mandela Day event and to be handing out food parcels

to the aged. The purpose of this event is to show the elders of the community that we still love and appreciate them,” said Makaleng. “We hope to continue Mandela’s legacy of caring and embracing our people”, said co-organiser, Alinah Masoka.

My wish is for these children to look back and say that God sent someone to meet their area of need that would impact their future.” The grateful children received their glasses and were given children’s Bibles, beautifully packaged in a fun backpack in the branding of the I Can See NGO and Change Bible Church. They honoured Shisana by proudly presenting her with a birthday cake and singing jubilantly in acknowledgement of her big day. Ambassador of the Children’s

Church 10-year-old Naledi Mahlangu, thanked her in a moving speech. This life-changing project was born in the Change Bible Church under the leadership of Nzo. The celebration attracted several signatories, including representatives from the office of the mayor of Ekurhuleni; well-known sports presenter Walter Mokoena and the managing director of Royal Haskoning DHV, Salani Sithole. ISUALLY impaired children in Katlehong were the happy recipients of their first-ever pairs of much needed spectacles. At the inaugural life-changing I Can See spectacular change event, 24 children were all smiles when they received their spectacles. The partnership between the I Can See NGO, the Change Bible Church and optometry sponsor, SpecSavers, brought life to the vision shared by these three stakeholders and vision to those unable to see properly. The I Can See NGO was founded by medical practitioner Dr Mikateko Shisana, a member of the Change Bible Church, earlier this year, in response to teachings on God’s vision for our lives, by Pastor Xola Nzo. Passionate about children and good health, Dr Shisana sacrificed funds she had saved for her 40th birthday party celebration and cash gifts received from friends and family, to launch the I Can See NGO, which supports children suffering from visual impairment. “As a child raised by a single mother from a humble background, I feel highly favoured and blessed when I look at my journey to date and I know that it was all from having Jesus as the author,'' she explained. ''This project is an opportunity to touch and impact someone’s life at a very young age.

Municipality opens new clinics in Kathorus

W

ITHIN a week of opening its doors to the public, the new Tswelopele Clinic, which is aimed at serving residents of Vosloorus South, has had more than 650 people coming to seek primary healthcare in a single week. And further down the road, in neighbouring Palm Ridge, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) erected another primary healthcare centre last month, to service local residents. Since then, more than 6 000 patients have been treated for a variety of ail-

ments at the Palm Ridge Clinic. In addressing the diverse range of community needs and acting towards alleviating overcrowding in clinics, a spokesman for the EMM said the MMC was pleased with the introduction of the two fully fledged Level-2 clinics. The MMC has described these healthcare centres as places that should give residents assurance that their ailments will be attended to and that they will return home satisfied with the service they received. Palm Ridge resident Phumla Chebane said the new clinic provides her

with exactly that. "The state of the old Palm Ridge Clinic never inspired hope; I went there only because I had no other choice. However, when I visit the new clinic I already feel better when I step in,'' she explained. "There is a larger waiting area with benches for us to sit on while we wait for a nurse to attend to us and I am comfortable with my child playing around, because it is cleaner." A staff nurse, who declined to be named, explained that improved primary health care services are a neces-

sity that have the potential to prevent hospital admissions when community members receive adequate assistance. "I am very excited about the new clinic," said Nomtha Mengwayi, head of the Tswelopele Clinic. "Patients will have more privacy, as separate rooms will be used for different functions. ''Previously, one office served as an emergency room and a doctor's consultation room, which at times limited the number of services provided at the facility." While Palm Ridge and Vosloorus

residents are enjoying the new clinics, the EMM is currently in the process of constructing eight more clinics to continue enhancing residents' primary health care facilities. The following clinics are currently under construction: * Motsamai Clinic in Katlehong; * Villa Lisa Clinic in Vosloorus; * Dukathole Clinic in Germiston; * Khumalo Clinic in Katlehong; * Tsietsi Clinic in Katlehong; * Crystal Park Clinic in Benoni; * Selope Thema in KwaThema; * Esangweni Clinic in Tembisa.

SAPS clamp down on gang members

P TRAGEDY: Police and an eyewitness next to the body of a man shot dead by his brother. The fatal shooting happened in Rolls Street, Eden Park.

Fratricide: Father loses a second son HIS last words to his brother were “Ja, clever,” before he pulled the trigger and shot him. Residents in Rolls Street, Eden Park, were shocked by the cold-blooded sibling shooting on Thursday, July 23. The fratricide was committed when the 24-year-old brother, shot and instantly killed his 19-year-old sibling. It is alleged by an eyewitness, who was with the deceased at the time of the shooting, and who asked not to be named,

that the deceased was shot as they walked onto the premises where the brothers lived. “We had just walked into the yard when the older brother came out of the front door and pointed a firearm at my friend. He said “Ja, clever,” then he fired a shot. That is when I ran away into the nearest house,” said the eyewitness. The father of the two brothers was still in shock when the MAIL spoke to him. “This is a big shock to us. When I left the boys

at home there was no fighting or argument. I don’t know from where he got the gun because he never possessed one. “I don’t know what is happening to my sons. Two years ago their eldest brother was killed in Little Germiston and now this,” said the broken father. After shooting his brother, the 24-year-old walked to the police station and handed himself over. A murder docket was opened.

OLICE in Katlehong have arrested several gang members suspected of being involved in a spate of serious crimes committed against members of the community around the township’s suburbs over the past few weeks. The police believe some of these gang members are responsible for a series of vicious attacks against the community around the township. The SAPS media spokesperson for the Katlehong police, Capt Mega Ndobe, described the gangs as having sowed fear and anger among individuals and families, as well as among different communities around Katlehong. As a result of a police anticrime blitz, which saw detectives investigating gangs with

the help of the police’s tactical units, four men were arrested in Katlehong North for a robbery at a business premises. The arrests followed information received by detectives from members of the public about the whereabouts of the suspects. In another anti-crime operation, also in Katlehong, police received information from the public about another gang of criminals who were also terrorising residents around Katlehong. Four of the suspects were arrested at different sections around Katlehong. During the arrests, three unlicensed pistols and a shotgun rifle were seized by the police. The shotgun was found at the home of a pensioner, who is also believed to have been the gang’s “sangoma”. All four suspects were arrested and charged with

a series of business robberies and for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The alleged “sangoma”, who was arrested with the gang members, later agree to stand as a state witness against members of the gang. The police are now trying to establish if any of the firearms confiscated from the suspects have been used in criminal activities. Another suspect has been linked to business robberies and is believed to have been the driver of a Toyota Quantum used in some of the gang’s criminal activities. The arrest of these suspects has made the Katlehong SAPS believe they have finally cracked the “backbone” of these crime syndicates in the township’s suburbs.

Man dies of drug overdose A 32-year-old man died on Tuesday, July 21, in Terra-Plane Street, Eden Park, of what is believed to have been a drug overdose. The man was discovered in an outside storeroom, fighting for his life, with nyaope in his hands. The usually quiet and empty street was swarming with inquisitive residents who wanted to see what was happening. "At 10:30 I found him in our storeroom, gasping for air and quivering and it was clear that he was fighting for his life. I ran to the neighbour for help and we carried him outside and tried to revive him by applying mouth-to-mouth but, sadly, he passed away and was declared dead on the scene," said Bruce Gys on whose property the man died. It was further alleged by Bruce that the man and friends used to sit at the back of the house, injecting themselves with nyaope. "Our gate was locked, so I assume that he had jumped over the fence and sat alone in the storeroom," Bruce concluded. Chrizencia Dlamini, the mother of the deceased was summoned to the scene and she was visibly emotionally shattered. "On July 10 we took my son and his friends to rehab,'' she said. ''Unfortunately, one of his friends died at the rehab centre after just four days. I hate all the people selling drugs to our children," said the mourning mother. A woman, who requested not to be named, said: "We must destroy all the houses where drugs are sold. My late father was killed by drug addicts who were high. We, the community, must

destroy these houses of the drug lords who make money by destroying our youth." Backed by an emotional crowd of women, she continued saying that the police are not doing much about the drug houses. "I just hope this is a lesson for people using drugs. My son died while in rehab, and now his friend is dead, too. Please stop using drugs," said Thabisile Mbonane with tears in her eyes.

BROKEN LIVES: Chrizencia Dlamini, mother of the deceased, weeps beside the body of her son, while a relative comforts her.

Children should own up to their actions, not parents

acebook

FRANS Heneck (62), a resident of Audie Street in Eden Park, asked: “Why must we, the parents, suffer for the actions of our children?” “A 19-year-old boy jumped over our fence, smashed my son’s car windows, my windows and the door because he blamed my son for his brother’s death during a shooting at the ‘Old School’ disco, held at the Eden Park community hall, on July 24.” An agreement was reached between the two families that no case will be opened with the police and that all the 19-year-old’s family will pay all the damages. The Heneck family, however, would still like to know what their house had to do with actions not involving them.

Twitter WHY OH WHY? Frans Heneck (62), of Audie Street, points out the damage done to his house by a young man, who blamed Heneck’s son for the death of his brother.

6-years back, before I met this spiritual woman Maama AISHA Zubeda, happiness was rare in my life; my husband was cheating on me, kids were always sickly & no-money in the house. I tried everything from healers, priests & gurus but nothing seemed to work for me; only wasted more money. Luckily I saw testimonials on a local TV station about old AISHA had saved from man whose son Maama Zubeda drugs & alcohol abuse plus another divorced lady Maama had re-united her with her ex-husband after Roshini & her happy family (3 days after 9-years. I paid R100 consultation fee. She the Special Prayers) accurately read my fortune & told me all my problems without me speaking a word to her. She then used a mirror to show me real-facess of people who were trying to pull me down. She performed a 1-day special prayer for me, cleansed me from bad-luck & also gave me powerful love-crystals, Indian ashes plus a specials ring (to fix financial problems). Just within 3-days after Maama MamaZubeda’s Aisha prayers, my husband confessed everything & asked for forgiveness. Today my kids are healthy and I recently got a senior job promotion. ARE YOUR FEELING TOTALLY HELPLESS, HEART-BROKEN & FINANCIALLY DOWN? IS THE SITUATION GETTING WORSE? “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH” DON’T LOSE HOPE! I have always referred Maama Z ubeda to many people & she has AISHA delivered results for them within few days... Call 063 076 081 6487 058 6392

REE and safe surgical and non-surgical circumcisions are offered at the Injabulo Clinic at the AMCARE Centre of Faith, Hope and Love in New Market Park. AMCARE in partnership with the Centre for HIV and AIDS Prevention Studies (CHAPS) and PrePex, aim to reduce circumcision fatalities through safe surgical circumcision and by introducing Prepex, a device which is used to perform non-surgical circumcision. “In the summer months, which are traditionally quiet, we do about 20 circumcisions per day but during the winter months we average about 160 procedures per day,” said clinic manager Sister Maria Sardini. Studies have shown that circumcision has health benefits. According to Sardini, circumcision reduces the risk of HIV infection by 60 per cent. Circumcision has also been proven to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections and cervical and penile cancer. The Injabulo Clinic recently added a 54 square meter room which is used as a seven bed theatre. This allows the clinic to offer more free services such as cervical cancer screening. Sardini explains that the extension became

necessary as the demand for the free services increased. The clinic not only focuses on medical male circumcision services but also monitors around 300 ARV Germiston Hospital patients who collect their treatment from the clinic. “We refer the patients back to the hospital when they have a complication that cannot be dealt with at clinic level. We also screen for TB and part of the circumcision process is having an HIV test and a general wellness check. Problem patients are referred for a variety of conditions from high blood pressure, diabetes and a range of other chronic conditions. Sexually transmitted diseases are treated on-site and HIV positive males are also followed up on-site,” said Sardini Injabulo Clinic is currently funded by Chaps who only covers staff salaries and the clinic’s running costs. The extension has been partly funded by Air Liquide France but AMCARE has to raise the rest of the funds. AMCARE appeals to the community and the business sector to help them raise the necessary funds to complete the extension. Become a Cupcake Angel S eptember is International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so why not show your support and become a Cupcake Angel. Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer, a nonprofit organisation, raises awareness about the early warning signs of childhood cancer and helps to raise funds for children who are fighting the illness. Through their 'Cupcakes of Hope' events, volunteers, sponsors and bakers share their love for baking for this great cause. Sandy Cipriano, the founder of Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer, said: "Our Cupcake Angels are baking a difference. We have been able to assist more than 350 children since inception. The funds raised go towards paying for medical treatments, travelling costs, school fees, birthday celebrations and other day-to-day expenses of little ones battling cancer. We also conduct hospital visits and spoil the patients and staff

with lovely cupcakes. It is great to see the smiles on children's faces when they see a cupcake." This charity has also donated to 15 different charities including CHOC, Cansa TLC and The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust. Spread the cupcake love by getting your school or company involved. Become a Cupcake Angel by hosting your own 'Party of Hope'. This is a fun way to create awareness and to help raise funds for children with cancer. Interested schools and businesses can register to receive a free Angel Party Pack, which includes leaflets, badges and baking cups. For more info contact Michelle at admin@cupcakesofhope.org. Become a Cupcake Angel – the sweetest way to save a life According to Dr Jennifer Geel, a paediatric oncologist at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, it is very important to know what the early warning

signs of childhood cancer are, as early detection can save a child's life. This is why Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer has designed an infographic which will help concerned parents to identify warning symptoms and the best course of action if they suspect that their children might have cancer. This is available in six of the national languages and can be printed from their website. Angus, a childhood cancer survivor, is concerned that there is a lot of awareness for other terminal diseases in schools but not enough about cancer. "We are not educated enough about this in schools, it is people like Sandy Cipriano who are going a long way to save children's lives with the Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer awareness. I am grateful that I was diagnosed at a stage when it could still be treated."When you get hold of an 'early warning signs of cancer' pamphlet, share it with a neighbour or a friend. It might

go a long way in helping the next person identify the symptoms in their relative or colleague. Teresa, Angus's mother said: “Knowing what I know now, all the signs were there. If I had a pamphlet I would have been informed and picked up on it much earlier.” There is not enough awareness for childhood cancer symptoms and everyone who is informed is encouraged to share the message with their close friends and family. Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer will be hosting South Africa's fourth National Cupcake Day on September 26, at 69 malls across the country. This is their main fund-raising event so show your support. For only a R10 donation you can receive a delicious cupcake made with love. To find a full list of beneficiaries or to see how you can get involved, visit www.cupcakesofhope.org

Mourners dumping after funerals Doing it for the community on Mandela Day CLEAN UP: The Anglican Church youth from St James (Katlehong), St Phillips and St Peters (Thokoza) and St Matthews and St Luke (Eden Park) spent their 67 minutes for Mandela Day cleaning the Eden Park Hospice on the corner of Lancia and Leon streets.

FUNERAL AFTERMATH: With people using polystyrene containers for dishing out food during funerals, the dumping problem has also increased. This site, near Supa Dupa Supermarket in Lancia Street, Eden Park, is gradually growing. Residents near the site said that people dumping these containers should rather keep them and put them out to be picked up on refuse collection days.

The Imitate Jesus! conventions will examine Jesus’ life, as outlined in the Bible, and emphasise how all – regardless of their background, lifestyle or religion – can benefit in practical ways from his example and teachings. A highlight of the programme will be the keynote address on Friday morning, entitled ‘Concealed in Him Are All the Treasures of Wisdom,” said convention spokesman, Kenneth Dias. Over two successive weekends an estimated 65 000 delegates are expected to attend the Bible-based programmes. Jehovah’s Witnesses in South Africa are organising 52 conventions, all supported by voluntary donations, in 16 languages in 20 cities and towns.

SAVING THE DAY: Brighton Mhlongo of Orlando Pirates saves the penalty of Kaizer Chiefs’ Reneilwe Letsholonyane during the 2015 Carling Black Label Cup derby. Photo:BackpagePix

Buccaneers win four out of five O RLANDO Pirates broke the hearts of Kaizer Chiefs by notching up their fourth Carling Black Label Cup title in front of a record crowd. The derby was played at the FNB Stadium, in Soweto, on Saturday, August

1, and once again saw the Buccaneers beat their arch-rival on penalties. Pirates opened the score board when Sifiso Myeni slotted a pinpoint free-kick 20 minutes into the match. Reneilwe Letsholonyane pulled one back for Amakhosi in the second half,

forcing the teams to lock heads at 1-1 till the end of the match. The Buccaneers took home their fourth win in the fifth edition of the Carling Black Label Cup winning 4-3 on a penalty shootout. During the penalty shoot-out, Pat-

Lerena snatches SA cruiserweight title THE boxing fraternity was treated to some of the best of boxing this year at the Young Guns tournament held at Emperors Palace on Thursday, July 30. Boxing is coming of age in the country and does not lack any action, and in all fairness some promoters have the tendency to make match-making look like an easy job. But yes, the code of boxing in South Africa still needs to be upgraded by the administrators. With this in mind, the most recent boxing extravaganza of excellence was made possible by Golden Gloves Promotion, the King of Box ’n Dines, AfricanRing, and steered to perfection by Jeff Ellis. Having the likes of matchmaker Ruben Rasodi with 36 years of experience on his side, the team once again produced boxing of a high calibre in front of a sold out crowd. The main bout of the evening saw Kevin Lerena snatch up the South African cruiserweight title after delivering powerful pounding to the face and body of Deon Coetzee. The 23-year-old Lerena came out firing from the first second to the last and kept blasting Coetzee with an array of punches. His trainer Peter Smith and company had his job cut out to perfection. As the pressure mounted, the battered Coetzee momentarily fought back at his hyped-up challenger, but his attempts had no effect and in the end he could only watch as his belt found a new owner. Lerena won the

The main supporting bout saw Grant Fourie rewarded for his years of patience and coming back from an illness to be crowned as the new South African junior-welterweight champion. The 34-year-old found openings in Warren Joubert’s defence which unsettled the former champion and enabled Fourie to pound his way to the title with good and accurate punches to receive a unanimous decision by the judges 117/111, 116/110, 114/112. Joubert won the title a few months ago

but struggled to up his game against his long time friend and former stablemate Fourie. In the junior-flyweight bout DeeJay Kriel enhanced his boxing record with yet another TKO when he dispersed of Thabo Moabi in the fifth round 2:47. After six rounds a draw was awarded to Lodumo Lamati and Cebo Ngema in the bantamweight division. The judge’s scorecard read 37/37, 35/39, 37/37. To open the evening’s proceedings, light heavywight bout debutants Fernando Rodrigues scored, over four rounds, a unanimous points decision by the judges 39/36, 38/37, 39/37 over

rick Phungwayo missed for Pirates, but Mhlongo twice saved goals from Keegan Ritchie and Letsholonyane. 94 807 fans gathered at the FNB Stadium to support the Carling Black Label Cup derby, breaking the FNB Stadium’s attendance record. The

previous record, 94 713, was set when the Springboks hosted the All Blacks at the Johannesburg venue in 2010. The FNB Stadium was originally opened in 1989 and underwent a major upgrade for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
