‘Arrest Senzo’s killers and help me’ - Mbatha A

lmost two and a half-years after he was wrongfully accused, arrested and later released by the police for a murder he did not commit, 29-year-old Zamokuhle Mbatha wants the SAPS to arrest the real killer of Senzo Meyiwa. He believes the arrest will clear his name and allow him to find closure to a nightmare that still hangs around his neck. To this end, Mbatha has urged the SAPS to put in more effort to find Senzo's killer or killers. Even though the murder case against Mbatha was dismissed due to lack of sufficient evidence in a Boksburg court three days after his arrest, he still fears for his life each time he hears people discuss the case. The former local Rastafarian was arrested shortly after the death of football star Senzo Meyiya, who was shot at the home of singer Kelly Khumalo, in Mzamo Acres, in Vosloorus on the night of October 26, 2013. “The fear and the stigma of having been accused of murdering Senzo Meyiwa still weighs heavily on my mind. Everywhere I go, I have to make sure that I move around areas where I’m known and among people that I’m familiar with. The case may have been kicked out of court, but I’ll never know just how many people with weird minds out there still see me as the ‘suspect’ who shot and killed Senzo,” said the soft-spoken Mbatha, as we sat talking in his steaming hot single room corrugated-sheeting back-yard shack, literally around the corner from the Khumalo home where Senzo was shot and killed. Mbatha describes the night Senzo Meyiwa was killed as like any another vibrant summer Sunday evening in the close-knit community of Mzamo Acres. It was lively and vibrant, and the streets were filled with the sounds of all types of music, from kwaito here, rap there, pop here and even jazz and church songs, for the more discerning, as people rounded up the weekend. Along Kutlwanong, the main street into the suburb, the local Spaza shop was still open and people were still making their last minute purchases. Members of the local Mahon Christian Church, which is diagonally opposite Kelly’s mother’s house, were also loudly singing their late Sunday church choir hymns, their voices overwhelming the bubbly evening. “I’m sure that is one of the reasons why I never even heard the gunshot that was said to have been fired during the attack that evening. I only got to hear about the shooting and death of Senzo the following morning. I even walked to the scene and I saw lots of vehicles, including police cars parked along the street outside Kelly’s home,” recalls the still visibly traumatised Mbatha. He describes the incident as the “worst traumatic experience” of his life. However, Mbatha speaks highly of the detectives who were handling the murder investigation against him. He described some of them as “tough-talking” but he says at no stage was he seriously threatened nor assaulted during the three days he spent in police detention. “I didn’t even appear in court on the morning of the 11th of November, when the case against me was struck off the roll at the Boksburg Magistrate's Court,” recalls Mbatha, with a tinge of excitement sparkling in his eyes and a brief smile flashing across his face. Recalling the harrowing experience of being

Zamokuhle Mbatha (29), the man who was accused, arrested and later released by a court for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa in October 2013. He said he still lives in fear for as long as the killer or killers of the famed soccer star are still out there, free and roaming the streets. picked up by Vosloorus detectives three days after that fateful Sunday night, Mbatha said he still has vivid memories of his shock after what he initially thought was a mere case of mistaken identity that would soon be resolved at the local police station. The incident suddenly escalated into a frightful, real life-shattering experience that paralysed every joint in his shaken body when detectives informed him he had been identified as the man who had fired the shot that killed Senzo Meyiwa. Senzo Meyiwa died under mysterious circumstances in what was later described by the police

as a “botched” house burglary at the home of Kelly Khumalo’s mother in Mzamo Acres. Guests who were having dinner inside the house at the time of the attack told detectives that one of the attackers had “dreadlocks”. Three days later, on the morning of Wednesday, October 29 at around 11am, Mbatha says detectives in possession of a photo of his ID stormed into his shack and accused him of being a suspect in Senzo Meyiwa’s death. When asked as to how a copy of his ID ended up in the hands of police investigating Senzo’s murder case, a puzzled and equally surprised

Mbatha had nothing much to say except, “The only logical reason I can think of is that there’s dozen of unemployed youngsters in this area and from time to time we are asked to submit our CVs together with a copy of our ID to the local Youth Forums, for job or training opportunities.” Mbatha says he was later escorted back to his shack by detectives who dropped him outside his yard and left. “I’ve never heard or seen them since.” he says. “All I want now is a report saying they’ve arrested Senzo’s killer or killers, so that I too can finally close this traumatic chapter of my life."

Editorial comment Save money and grow your own food

W

ith food prices soaring and earnings unable to meet the high cost of living, it looks like the fashionable trend of rushing off to the nearest supermarket or corner spaza shop each time we need to feed our loved ones could soon be a thing of the past. The high price of foodstuff and that of just about everything we need to survive these days is going through the roof and becoming out of the reach of many ordinary families in our neighbourhoods. If we add this

to the high rate of unemployment, the plight of many households is indeed dire, with some households now resorting to surviving on only one single meal a day. Sadly, those who often get caught in the tail-end of this vicious cycle of deprivation and hunger are mainly children, the elderly and the frail. This also becomes the main source of other contributing social and domestic frustrations, which often trigger even more serious health problems as a result of malnutrition. While most of the food we buy often has an even shorter lifespan as soon as it lands on our tables from the supermarket, sometimes even stocking some foods in bulk can turn into a further waste and depletion of the very scarce resource which

we need to buy our food - namely, money. Perhaps the most immediate answer one can think of to curb the high food prices in these harsh times would be to start a food garden in your own backyard. For most households, this would not only guarantee regular meals, but also a constant supply of fresh vegetables at all time throughout the season. Schools could also jump onto this bandwagon to supplement their existing nutritional programmes or even create a feeding scheme for their pupils by cultivating their own food gardens. Given the plight of the unemployed parents of many of these pupils, I’m sure some among them would gladly

participate in such a programme, especially if they know that they can bring home a bowl of their harvest to feed their families for the night. Maybe it is time we stopped looking at money as the only means of survival when we can, in fact, do a lot more to feed ourselves and those we love by simply getting our hands dirty. Do we really have to burn things to resolve our problems? I sometimes ask myself, what kind of student resorts to burning a book or a library to make a statement or give voice his or her anger? Unless, of course, one is not fully acquainted with the value and purpose of, nor the reason why writers, authors and researchers write books, burning books and libraries will al-

ways remain the reserved pleasure of the most barbaric and uncivilised among us. My friend Galaza is still agog with excitement and praise for the EMPD, following the speed with which they managed to arrest the two suspects behind the killing of one of their own in Springs last month. “How did they get it right, when the SAPS guys coupled with a specialised investigating team are still battling to solve the Senzo Meyiwa murder case almost two and half years after the drastic deed was done?” “Maybe,” suggested Galaza, as he downed his sixth calabash of his favourite 'sqo' at his favourite drinking hole at the Kwesine Hostel, “they should swap the acronym 'SAPS' to 'EMPD' for quick results.”

I commend the local taxi association Last weekend on February 7 there was a huge accident at corner Barry Marais and the old Heidelberg Road. The incident was covered by Kathorus MAIL and two people were certified dead on the spot. Three others lost their lives later and one of them was a sister. I would like to bring to your attention the other

side of the Vosloorus-Boksburg and Dunsward taxi association. They showed their humanity by visiting the bereaved families and brought messages of condolence. The most humble part that touched the hearts of my family was the offer of 10 taxis to transport mourners during the funeral. As if that was not enough, they also made a huge

financial contribution towards helping with burial costs. I am writing this letter on behalf of the family to say thank you very much to the association. This piece of information deserves to be published. Mtutuzeli Lumata Mayilula Park VOSLOORUS

High cost of food a burden for most The high cost of living is causing a stressful strain on the lives of the poor and the unemployed in our communities. While this may not sound true to some, it is a known fact that some families only eat one meal a day while others have gone as far as eating on alternative days. This is something that has the po-

tential to disrupt and destroy many households as food not only becomes more expensive but scarce and unavailable in many areas. It may be too late now to encourage families to start planting their own foodstuff in their backyards, but it is also a better option for those who don’t want to die of

I cannot trust a rude leader For as long as Economic Freedom Fighter leader Julius Malema continues to spew venomous insults at our elderly in public, his behaviour will sow nothing but disrespect and insolence against older people in our communities. We all know that politics is a dirty game and only the 'fit' often survive these rough battlegrounds where decades-old friends become enemies and foes in a matter of minutes. We already have a very demoralised society, and by treating elderly politicians with disrespect, Malema is opening the floodgate of abuse against the elderly. Why must we be disrespectful to those we, the young, should be learning from? Please Mr Malema, show us your leadership qualities and not how much you can swear and insult your elders in public. Junior councillors to serve the youth The beginning of Ekurhuleni’s junior councillors’ term of office has started in earnest following their recent inauguration in Boksburg. The young leaders used the occasion to pledge their commitment to serve the residents of Ekurhuleni with dignity and pride. The newly sworn-in councillors converged for their first council meeting on Thursday, February 11, at the Boksburg Civic Centre to tackle governance issues affecting the youth.

Speaking after the inauguration and election of committee chairs, the Junior Speaker of Council, Clr Khanyisile Sponzwa called for the council to work in unity. “We ought to work together and be examples that both our parents and residents of Ekurhuleni can be proud of. I pray that during our term of office, we will work diligently with no division, even in the midst of expected pluralism of ideas in council,” Clr Sponzwa said. The establishment of the junior

council is championed by Ekurhuleni’s Speaker of Council, Clr Patricia Khumalo. Khumalo believes that a nation that doesn’t invest in its young people is walking into a trap of a doomed future. “These young people will acquire knowledge of public affairs and understanding of how government operates, and this will ensure that we have a feeder system of great leaders who are able to even resolve conflicts through negotiation,” she said.

SASSA distances itself from fraud and tricksters

T

he South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has released a statement identifying which groups the organisation deals with when payments are made to beneficiaries. SASSA's co-ordinator, Nandi Mosiya, said her organisation has no contractual dealings with Grindrod Bank, or Moneyline, since both are independent entities that are not contracted to SASSA. Mosiya said the SASSA has issued several statements absolving itself from the activities of Grindrod Bank as a loan provider to SASSA’s clients, who are mainly pensioners. “This is due to the number of complaints we’ve received about loans made by these loan providers to pensioners, which include scams targeting pensioners,” said Mosiya. According to Mosiya, the SASSA condemns criminal activities by scammers who pose as SASSA employees in order to withdraw cash fraudulently from social beneficiaries’ ac-

The SASSA conducts its business strictly in marked SASSA offices and if people are in doubt, they can verify by calling 0800 6010 11 toll-free. The SASSA payment card is still valid and there is no need to replace it with another one as some agents might incorrectly claim. “We call upon the public to work together with the SASSA and the authorities in helping to expose these fraudsters by reporting them to the police or SASSA immediately. SASSA remains committed to eliminating any form of fraud or corruption that involves its name and its social grant services,” said Petersen. A process is currently underway to introduce legislation that will make it difficult for service providers to institute debit orders on social grant accounts.

In some cases, the fraudsters use the “proof of life” modusoperandi by visiting beneficiaries’ homes, produce forged SASSA identification cards and inform their victims that they were doing inspections to confirm whether the card holder is still alive. They then ask for the SASSA card, identity documents and PIN numbers. Once in possession of these details, they then use the internet and withdraw money from the accounts. In some cases, they use these details to initiate unauthorised monthly debit orders on the accounts. The SASSA, in collaboration with the police and other law enforcement agencies, has started high-level investigations into these scams and very soon these criminals will be put behind bars. “We urge all SASSA beneficiaries to not give out personal details to people visiting their homes. Zonke youth arrested for a stolen firearm

Security guard killed in cash heist The Thokoza SAPS has registered two murder dockets following the death of a security guard and a man believed to have been part of three armed men who robbed a cash-in-transit van in Thokoza recently. According to Capt Mega Ndobe, the spokesperson for the SAPS’ Kathorus Cluster, the incident happened at a Standard Bank outlet at the U-Save Supermarket in Yende Street, Thokoza, where security personnel from a cash-intransit company were about to load cash into ATMs. “The guard suddenly found he was under attack and fired shots at the armed men and in

arlier in the year, around January, a registered firearm was stolen from the owner in Zonk’izizwe. Within months, members of the EMPD Crime Prevention Unit received information that led to the arrest of a 19-year-old youth and the subsequent recovery of a Norinco 9mm pistol and ammunition hidden under a mattress in a shack in the informal settlement. According to the EMPD’s Kobedi Mokgeseng, it was reliable information which members of the unit acted upon that led to the arrest of the young man, who was found at his home in Zonk'izizwe. The arrest took place in the early hours of Wednesday, February17 around 4am. The arrested suspect was charged at Zonk'izizwe Police Station with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He made his formal appearance at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court for a formal remand pending further investigations.

the ensuing chaos, he was shot as the three men fled the scene with the cash-box. The guard died a few minutes later from his wounds,” said Capt Ndobe. When the police combined the scene several minutes later, they found a trail of bloodstains which led them to the dead body of one of the robbers, who was slumped on the floor about 20m from a 9mm pistol, which the police believe was used by the robbers during the robbery. No arrests were made at the time of going to press and the police have asked members of the public to forward any information they may have about the incident to the nearest police station.

If we do not preserve water now, our future generations will suffer. It is also up to those who will be leaders in the future to start treating this precious resource with the respect it deserves. Hence the City of Ekurhuleni has set out on a three-week long educational campaign at schools throughout the City. Themed "Water is Life and Sanitation is Dignity" officials from the City's Water and Sanitation Department are spreading their message through practical exercises with the children and handing out educational material. The campaign is focused on sharing watersaving tips with primary school pupils, where they also get an opportunity to participate in practical activities such as fixing water leaks which are a main cause of water loss in the City. Already knowledgeable about water, saving Grade One learner at Strubenvale Primary School in Springs, Tayron Mayer, shared his ideas with his schoolmates: "We must never leave the water running when we brush our teeth in the morning and we must always close the tap hard when we finish drinking water." The EMPD gets tough on bribery

W

hen members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police ByLaw Unit stopped a seemingly battered Toyota Dyna laden with old tyres last Wednesday morning, February 15, along Leeuwpoort Street in the Boksburg CBD, the driver of the Dyna truck informed the metro police that he was transporting the old tyres to an open veld to burn them, with

the objective of harvesting the wire to sell as scrap metal. However, owing to the extremely poor condition of the truck, the metro police were compelled to declare the vehicle unroadworthy and deregister it from the road. The vehicle was then removed to the EMPD Boksburg pound. On arrival at the Boksburg offices to complete paperwork for the impounded truck, the

officers were approached by a man claiming to be a messenger of the truck owner. The 'messenger' produced R500 in cash and tried to bribe the officers to turn a blind eye to the offence. The 33-year-old man was read his rights, handcuffed and taken to Boksburg Central police station, where he was charged with bribery as well as interfering in metro police duties.

Computer boffin from Vosloorus VOSLOORUS youngster and one of the Peermont Education Trust’s top bursary recipients, Andries Bingani has just returned from a trip of a lifetime to Austin, Texas. The 20-year-old, who is in his final year of studying computer science at the University of the Witwatersrand, had this amazing opportunity after he and his team won the CHPC - Center for High Performance Computing - cluster competition last year. It is a competition where participants are given a budget to build a super computer and then the judges run it against their benchmarks, a means of testing if the programe works. Speaking about the competition he said it challenged him in a lot of different ways and required hard work, teamwork and time management - thankfully things he learnt through the guidance

and support of the Peermont Education Trust. As a result of winning the competition, Bingani and his five teammates will now represent, South Africa in an international competition, with similar rules, in Germany in July. And it was in preparation for this trip that the former Thuto Lesedi Secondary School learner and his fellow computer boffins went to Texas from January 29 to February 8. Speaking about the trip Bingani said it was amazing, a once-in-alifetime experience that he will never forget. “I learnt a lot during my trip. Apart from all the computer stuff we went to all the famous restaurants in Texas, walked along the famous Fourth Street, enjoyed the Texas beef and went to the capital building in Texas

and learnt all about the history of the people there. “To top it all off we got to eat original Mexican food and although the Americans can't cook bacon and make milkshakes, the atmosphere was amazing. My favourite parts though, was visiting the Space Centre Houston,” added the Ekurhuleni youngster animatedly after returning from his first trip out of the country and on an aeroplane. He would not have had all these opportunities and experiences if it hadn’t been for his trust scholarship and the CHPC. “I mean, who would have thought that a person coming from a difficult background like mine would get a chance to visit countries that I only know from TV. I now understand what is meant by never let your background define you!”

ENJOY THE SIGHTS: Andries Bingani, one of the Peermont Education Trust’s top scholarship recipients, enjoys the sights and sounds of Austin during his recent trip to Texas.
