INSPIRING: Gauteng Premier David Makhura (left) unveiling the statue of Mama Bertha Gxowa with Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele at the Keditselana Cultural Village.
Statue of Mama Gxowa unveiled
E
KURHULENI Metropolitan Municipality’s executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele, together with the Premier of Gauteng David Makhura, unveiled the life size statue of Mama Bertha Gxowa in honour of her selfless contribution to the transformation of the country, particularly for women. On Wednesday, August 19, scores of woman from all over the country converged at the Keditselana Cultural Village in Katlehong to honour the struggle stalwart’s life.
A bronze statue of Mam Bertha, as she was affectionately known, raising a triumphant right hand clenched in a fist to symbolise her solidarity with the courageous woman of South Africa in their stance against oppression and their historic march to the Union Building in 1956, stands in the Cultural Village in Vosloorus, as a constant reminder to the women of today to carry the baton of fighting for the complete liberation of women and children. “The only way in which the future
can make sense is when its foundation, which is history, is properly organised and documented. Unveiling this statue is a symbol of recording our authentic history,” said Gungubele. As the nation observes August as women’s month, Mam Gxowa is remembered as a philanthropic figure who championed women’s agendas politically and socially. As a leader in the unionist campaigns to fight for the rights of female workers, she became a key figure as part of the planners of the historic march to the Union Buildings
which ultimately led to the emancipation of women from the bondages of the apartheid regime. “She was part of all the major historical campaigns in our history, from the Defiance Campaign of Unjust Laws in 1952, the formation of the Federation of South African Women in 1954, the adoption of the Freedom Charter in 1955, the staging of the historic Women's March to the Union Buildings in 1956 and the 1957 Treason Trial,” said President Jacob Zuma at her funeral in 2010.
Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Molebatsi Bopape said: “It is our responsibility as women to play our role in the community, not just in the kitchen, but by being at the centre of the economy. That’s the ideal Mam Bertha fought for.” Gxowa was born in Germiston and died at the age of 76 in November 2010. Her grave site, situated at the Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg, was declared a Heritage Site by the Provincial Heritage Resource Authority of Gauteng in 2014.

Police have become easy targets for criminals
I
feel sorry for the families of SAPS members who have become easy targets for criminals. The ruthless and blatant murder of a policeman at the Vosloorus Crossing Shopping Centre in July, has shown how much respect criminals have lost for the law and the rest of society. I find the daring courage in which these criminals managed
to ambush the two policemen, one of whom later died, not only endangers innocent people and undermines the laws of our country. Unless the legal system becomes tough and ruthless with criminals who commit murder, this sort of mayhem shall continue unabated. To date, we have had more than 50 policemen killed by criminals while in the line of duty and this has got to
come to end. We did not fight against the oppressive system of apartheid only to be ruled by a pack of savages who wish to terrorise society with their murderous criminal activities. We should all stand up against this evil crime scourge in our communities. Samuel Nhlengisa, Moleleki Section, KATLEHONG.
Shopping centre hiding place for criminals THE recent killing of Const. Buthelezi of the Vosloorus SAPS at the Vosloo Crossing Shopping Centre has confirmed what many people have always known about crime and the new shopping centres around our townships.
Criminals and gangsters loiter around these centres in search of unsuspecting shoppers and even stores that they can rob and steal from. It is easy for these criminals to commit a crime and then simply vanish into the crowd inside the shopping centre.
Maybe it is time for the police and the centre managements to work together and increase surveillance around these centres before criminals get the upper hand at these shopping centres. Elizabeth Seleoane, Mayibuye Park, Vosloorus

Media should not be a political platform
F
AMED Afro-American jazz trumpeter and singer Louis Armstrong mused about ‘What a wonderful world’ and I too, like many members of the progressive colourless society I circulate in, often wonder what a wonderful world South Africa would be by now if the powers-that-were, 67 years ago, had not dragged and dug us into this messy, stinking and antisocial quagmire we find ourselves in as a nation. As Mondli Gungubele, the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni once quipped, “As a nation, the blacks, coloureds, Asian and white South Africans, need a healing process through which we can all find one another and wash away the mental scars left by the garbage of our evil past.” Clr Gungubele goes on to add that, as a nation, we need to stop fighting and tearing each other apart and instead strive to come together and inspire the best in each of us to build Mzansi. South Africa remains the only country on the African continent whose inhabitants are still divided by the colour of their skin. These same words were echoed by two highly acclaimed visiting journalism
professors and lecturers, John Hatcher of the University of Minnesota’s Duluth campus and Bill Reader who is a media studies expert, graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and associate professor at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. Both were guest speakers at the ‘No Guts – No Story’ Sanlam Community Journalist Forum (FCJ) in Middelburg on Friday, August 21. Hatcher and Reader have nothing but high praise for the future of journalism in South Africa, especially among the country’s young media students whom both claim showed high levels of interest in their media studies. Hatcher and Reader’s presentations were informed by the pair’s interaction with journalism students at the University of Technology in Pretoria, as well as visits to several community-driven grassroots print, online and radio media during their twoweek stay in South Africa. The two visiting journalism experts would also like to engage local journalism training institutions through twinning programs with similar media training institutions in the US. They say these programmes would involve
student exchange programs. It was also their contention that the future of a free and democratic non-racial society in South Africa will only be better addressed and informed by the involvement and participation of an open and transparent media. Both also believe that it is only when the local media refrains from being a platform for political ideologies that the country will become a more democratic nation. We’ve come a long way from where we were and now is the time to come together and join hands in pushing the horizon a little bit further away so as to make more room for us all under the African sky.

Manhunt launched to find escaped prisoner
A
N East Rand prison detainee accused of attempted murder and rape has escaped police custody following a road accident in Katlehong. The accident happened in close proximity to the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on August 19 just after 15:00 on Rivett-Carnett Street. Captain Mega Ndobe, the spokesperson for the Katlehong Police Station, confirmed the accident and said that a police van with 10 prison detainees, a cash-in-transit vehicle and a minibus-taxi were involved in the collision. “The police were transporting the prison
BE AWARE: Jonathan Snyders helps and protects an unknown woman to safely withdraw cash from the notorious Eden Park ATM. Robberies are believed to occur here on a daily basis.
Thief uses stolen gun to rob and hijack
Watch out for robbers at this ATM ATM robberies are fast becoming a daily activity at the Buy-Rite Supermarket in Eden Park. Conmen are allegedly robbing at least one person every day. “We warn people about these
detainees back to the Correctional Services after they had made an appearance in the Palmridge Court.” Kevin Peel, the spokesperson for National Paramedical Services, said the two police officers were transported to the Netcare Union Hospital while the detainees were taken to the Natalspruit Hospital in Vosloorus. “No serious injuries have been reported.” Ndobe said one of the detainees managed to escape while he was being treated at the hospital. In an effort to recapture the suspect, police have reportedly launched a manhunt.
robbers who are always standing around or near the ATM machines. They cleverly block the ATM for clients so that they will have a problem when withdrawing cash. The robbers then arrive
in different cars to swop operators. I urge everybody to be on the lookout and not to allow anyone near them when operating the ATM,” said Jonathan Snyders, a frequent visitor to the centre.
THE Willeman family of Eden Park had a firearm reportedly stolen from their safe by a person known to the family. According to Jacky Willeman, it is known to the family that the addict has stolen from many residents, including family members.
The man allegedly used the stolen firearm to rob a local tuck-shop and to hijack another family member. The man then forced the family member to drive him around as he searched for his girlfriend. While in the vehicle, the
man reportedly fired several shots at random, fortunately not injuring anyone. The next day, sector manager Constable Maho Morobi, arrested the man near Geniva’s Tavern in Eden Park. The stolen firearm was still in his possession.
Avoid becoming a statistic WITH housebreaking incidents receiving more and more exposure in newspapers and on social networks, it has become apparent to residents that there has been an increase. Provincial SAPS, together with Shoprite Checkers, compiled a list of useful tips in an effort to assist communities in the fight against crime. If your house has been broken into: It will always come in handy for residents to make a list of the make, model and serial numbers of electrical appliances and other valuable equipment. This should always be available for investigation purposes in case of a crime. It has become common
practice for residents, who are victims of crime, to contact the sector CPFs and private security companies. The SAPS advises that unless it’s absolutely necessary, don’t allow private security on the premises before police have investigated. Security personnel shouldn’t be allowed to touch anything in order to avoid the contamination of evidence. Residents should also wait until fingerprints and statements have been taken before touching anything. Look for strange footprints in the garden and point them out to the police. Preventing housebreaking and theft, this is what

ID mix-up holds son back
A
Katlehong father is at his wits end after a seven year struggle to obtain an identity document (ID) for his now 27-year-old son has proven fruitless. Daniel Phadu says their lives have been difficult as Alberton Home Affairs can’t issue his son, Tshepo Phadu, with an ID before they have received documents indicating that his deceased wife, Ntombizodwa Phadu, is Tshepo’s biological mother. Ntombizodwa passed away in 2001. Daniel said their trouble started in 2008 when Tshepo, then 21, applied for an ID as he needed one to write his matric exams. In the end, he had

to use his birth certificate to register for the exams. “According to Home Affairs, Tshepo already has an ID document issued to him but the details that they have belong to his cousin who has the same name and surname as him,” Daniel said. Proof of this was shown to the RECORD. The two cousins were born two days apart in 1987 and Daniel believes this is where the alleged mix-up lies. “They are asking for the details of my brother’s daughter, saying that she is his mother, but this is not the case. We have had so many arguments. They apparently agree that the problem lies
on their side, but if we want to rectify their mistake, we must first pay an amount to have it rectified. But why should we pay to fix their mistakes?” Daniel said they have visited the Alberton Home Affairs four times this year and turned to the RECORD because they are not making any progress. “In the process my son is not able to enjoy his life as he cannot apply for a job or further his studies. Not having an ID holds him back. It’s as if he does not exist.” The RECORD is awaiting comment from Thabo Mokgola, spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs.
HAPPY MOMENTS: Gogo Maria Ramathla (75) shares her excitement as she waves the keys of her new house while Natiswa Jakalashe from Housing looks on.
House keys bring smiles to elderly FINALLY keys to a home they can call their own and big smiles to go with that. Tuesday, July 7, was a happy day for the elderly when they received keys to their new homes in Eden Park West. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality officials of Human Settlements handed out 13 keys to beneficiaries who moved in immediately. "The first batch of keys was issued in May 2015, where we
handed over 39 keys to the elderly. Now we have issued 13 more and will continue to do so as houses are completed by the contractors," said Natiswa Jakalashe from Housing. Gogos Maria Ramatla and Flora Ramushu, both from Vosloorus, exclaimed simultaneously: "Thank you Lord, you answered our prays. Now we have homes of our own. Out of a Zozo into a beautiful house."
ID TROUBLE: Tshepo Phadu (left) has been struggling to obtain an identity document from the Department of Home Affairs. With him is his father Daniel and all the documents they believe verify their case.

CHILDREN from Multi-Ed Centre, also known as Sugarshack Centre, donated food parcels and lunchboxes to needy community members in Haddon on Wednesday, August 5. Parents’ donations helped their little ones learn to give to the less fortunate from an early age. The children from the Mulbarton daycare and crèche were excited to give food parcels to community members who brought ice cream boxes and cut cold-drink bottles to collect soup.
“I think more and more people should get involved and help,” said Jenny.
CHARITY: MOW in Haddon gives food to the less fortunate on Wednesdays.
“I think this enriches the children’s lives. A three-year-old boy was very excited to give food to other people. He can’t even speak properly but he was so excited to give,” said Jade-Lee Herman, the daycare’s principal. Jenny Brandt from Haddon’s Meals on Wheels (MOW) was proud to see the children give food to other people in need. “We are proud and inspired by the children. You could see they were very happy to do this. I think more and more people should get involved and
help. They can donate plastic dishes or ice cream boxes because you can see some of the people in the queue are using anything they could find to contain the soup,” she said. To continue providing food on Wednesdays, MOW needs donations of plastic containers, juices, sandwiches and fresh fruits. For more information or to contribute, contact MOW’s relationship executive, Simone Burts, on 011 434 2670 or send an email to simone@ mealsonwheels.co.za.

Pensioner has a solution for shack fires
C
HRIS Nxumalo, a 66-year-old pensioner and former metal and steel worker, has designed what he says is his “creative contribution to curbing the increase of the number of people, especially children, who die in shack fires, often caused by burning candles”. The handmade portable zinc gadget with self-controlling parts, which Nxumalo says takes him between a day or two to make, is in fact a “work of art” for someone who has no engineering qualifications. The contraption is a highly modified and modernised handmade candle holder which is designed to hold a burning candle up-right and then “nips” the flame once the candle burns to the end. Drippings wax from the burning candle falls into a container at the bottom of the candle holder. Nxumalo says once the container is full, the wax is re-useable as it can be mixed with paraffin and applied on lanolin floorings as a polish and is commonly used
in informal households. Paging through a thick brown folder with a pile of different newspaper cuttings depicting horrific fire stories about shacks gutted by fire, often caused by unattended candles, Nxumalo believes his new invention is a solution to such deaths in informal settlements. “The sad part about these fires is that they always, as in most cases, often affect small children who are also among the majority of casualties in informal settlements,” he explains. Nxumalo calls his handmade designer candle holder the “Candle-Sticker” and swears that it is not only “fire-proof”, but that it is also guaranteed to extinguish a burning candle even when the family in the household is fast asleep during the night. “Once a candle in inserted into the contraption and then is lit, you do not have to worry about it falling over and causing a fire when it finally runs out, even it is left unattended.” explained
a proud and enthusiastic Nxumalo. When asked by Kathorus MAIL what he hopes to do with his “Candle-Sticker”, the ageing pensioner said he wishes to find a financial backer who can finance him to mass produce his design. “It costs me about R150 to manufacture a single unit by hand, including all the parts, and it takes me roughly a full day or two, depending on how quick I can get the parts I need to complete a unit,” said Nxumalo. Nxumalo says that he believes his invention could drastically reduce the number of shack fires in informal settlements. “I think the many deaths we have experienced over the years can be brought down to a minimal. That is why I think the mass production of the gadget will make it affordable to the ordinary household in informal housing as well as in normal households where, with the regular load shedding, they are likely to use a candle at some point,” explains Nxumalo.
SOLUTION: Mr Chris Nxumalo has come up with an invention which could save life. CLEVER AND INNOVATIVE: Mr Chris Nxumalo’s creation.

SOUTH Africa’s multi-award winning record producer and disc jockey (DJ), Black Coffee, has his Casual Day sticker and will be joining millions of South Africans on September 4, in raising funds for people with disabilities. Other celebrities who already have their stickers include songstress and humanitarian Yvonne Chaka Chaka, paralympic athlete Samkelo Radebe and television presenter Lezanne Naidoo. “We asked Black Coffee to wear his Casual Day sticker, because he is one of the most influential stars in the country,” said Therina Wentzel, director of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA). “Casual Day, South Africa’s foremost fundraiser for people with disabilities, is owned by the NCPPDSA. “Last year we raised R28-million; Casual Day is a lifeline for many organisations who provide services to people with disabilities. “Most of the NGOs providing education, shelter, transport, assistive devices and other necessities to people with disabilities receive no government funding and need projects like Casual Day to assure their sustainability.'' “At the age of 13, Black Coffee was injured by a speeding vehicle while celebrating the release of Nelson Mandela,” said Andrea Vinassa, media liaison for Casual Day. “As a result he lost the use of his left arm. “One of Black Coffee’s most inspirational moves was when he established a foundation called DJ Black Coffee Foundation, which uplifts and assists people with disabilities.” A number of Casual Day ambassadors will join the call to Spring Into Action for people with disabilities, including paralympic wheelchair tennis player Kgothatso ''KG'' Montjane, former Miss Deaf South Africa 2012 and professional ballet dancer Simoné Botha, paralympic swimmer Adri Visser and Miss Deaf 2013 Lefa Manamela, to mention a few. “Your R10 donation will go towards providing education, job creation, transport, assistive devices and emotional support to people with disabilities, through the 500 organisations that participate,” explained Vinassa. “Get your stickers from your local participating organisation.” For more information, contact Vinassa on 079 089 9835, or email to her at andrea.flashpoint@ gmail.com.

Phola Park protests for electricity
P
HOLA Park residents have been complaining for about three months about the electricity cuts and the non-functioning electrical transformers in the area, which leaves many households without electricity. On Wednesday, August 19, the residents decided to take action to show their anger towards the ward councillor and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM). Many of the residents said
they were fed up with the power cuts in the area as it effects their daily lives. To reflect their anger for not being listened to, residents barricaded the M7 road with stones and burning tyres. Residents demanded to speak to the ward councillor, Robert Pienaar, who arrived at the scene and addressed the angry residents. He arrived with a technician from the department of electricity. “We are in a process of changing the faulty transform-
ers but the main problem here is the illegal connections made by the residents in one area. Our technicians have started immediately to work on and repair the faulty equipment,” said Clr Pienaar. By the end of the day the M7 was clear and several reconnections had been made. Clr Pienaar later reported that only about 40 houses still needed to be attended to by the electricity department and that this would commence by Thursday, August 20.

SSP offers scholarships for grade six learners
acebook Twitter
STUDENT Sponsorship Programme (SSP) awards scholarships to academically gifted and underprivileged primary school learners. These scholarships enable learners to attend the best high schools in the country. SSP has over 20 partner schools in Gauteng which includes the American International School of Johannesburg, King Edward VII School, Redhill School, Roedean School, SAHETI School, St. John’s College, St. Martin’s School, St. Stithians College, Pretoria Boys High School and St. Alban’s College. SSP invites academically gifted grade six learners, who demonstrate a financial need and believe that they have the potential to change
the future of South Africa, to apply for the scholarships. The scholarship enables learners to attend one of SSP’s partner schools for five years and will cover their tuition, textbooks, stationery, extramural activities, sporting equipment and local educational trips. “Our mission is to identify these talented young learners and reward their commitment by giving them access to schools that will further enhance their skills and develop their potential. We are developing South Africa’s future leaders,”said Jenny Ketley, executive director of SSP. In order for an application to be considered, learners must meet the following criteria: • Currently in grade six
• 12 years or younger • Have an aggregate of 70 percent or above in their latest academic report • Maintain a 70 percent average or above in math, natural science and English • Demonstrate a financial need, with a household income of less than R16 000 per month Application forms can be downloaded from www.ssp. org.za, hard copies are also available at several libraries and can alternatively be collected from their offices at the NBC Building, 76 Juta Street in Braamfontein. Applications close on Monday, August 31. Direct enquiries to 010 206 0723, 010 206 0022, 010 206 0049, contact@ ssp.org.za or scholarship@ ssp.org.za.

Chess team takes first place
E
DEN Park Secondary School's chess team is the pride and joy of the school. The team obtained first place when they recently competed in the u.18 competition at Hoërskool Oosterlig, in the district finals. "Getting to the finals was no easy task,''said the proud coach, NM Bas. ''We played against very strong
teams, but have won all our matches since May this year. “We won 6-0 against Hoërskool Alberton, 5-1 against Hoërskool Dinamika, beat Bracken High 5-1, Alberton High 4-2 and Marais Viljoen with 4-2. Playing in the district finals, the team obtained six points in the first round but lost 4-2 against Thuto-Lesedi High School in the second round.
They went on to defeat Katlehong High 5-1 in the third round and Hoërskool Oosterlig 5-1 in the fourth round. This team of seven enthusiastic young men started playing chess while attending Opelweg Primary School. They talk with pride about their coach at Opelweg Primary, who taught them the game and turned them into masters of the game.
READY FOR THE TASK: Edna Kaylla Peterson (10), a 2015 debutante at Stoneridge Primary School, with her proud father, Neville Peterson.
Edna’s efforts paid off VICTORIOUS: The unbeaten chess team of Eden Park Secondary School. Front: Devon Dortley, Lucky Kubheka and Xhanadine Pennington. Back: NM Basi (coach), Orapeleng Kenosi (captain), Monde Lubhelwana, Inathi Ntandani, Lugman Oliphant and EM Naude (principal).
STONERIDGE Primary School’s debutantes were tasked to raise funds for both the school’s feeding scheme and the erection of a steel structure for the school hall. Edna Kaylla Peterson (10) and her helpful parents approached Vanessa Grobler of Jerseys4Jozi for help and
she in turn partnered with several other companies and organisations and donated tinned food to the school’s feeding scheme. “My desire was to help those less fortunate with much needed food. I am grateful to the companies who donated the food,” said the shy Edna.
Palmridge ready to go paperless GRADE 12 learners of the Palmridge Combined School received 185 new tablets for the Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) paperless programme on Wednesday, August 5. Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi officially launched the rollout of the technology programme on Monday, August 4. The launch was part of the MEC’s imbizo with matriculants at
different schools explaining that the department’s commitment was to provide them with quality education and that learners must take good care of their tablets. “We are happy about the tablets and for the paperless classroom programme. On behalf of the school SGB, educators and our community, I thank the MEC for his vision with this
programme. “For now I am responsible for the tablets but once handed over to the learners, the responsibility of safe keeping is with the parents and the learners. They must take good care of the tablets until the end of their schooling. We are now eagerly awaiting delivery of the smart boards to get into business,” said Hamrajh Singh, the headmaster.
TOP ACHIEVERS: Eden Park Secondary School’s top 10 matric learners based on results of the second term are, front (from left): Eileen Jacobs (56.4 per cent), Lydia Mofereka (55.71 per cent), Shaheedah Daud (61.8 per cent), Reneilwe Shai (67.43 per cent and Mpho Mabala (54.71 per cent). Back: Bridgette Williams (55.71 per cent), Nicole Hetjies (56 per cent), Nthabiseng Ndlunkulu (61.43 per cent), Reuben Scott (70. 29 per cent) and Jerome Vermaak (59.62 percent). Absent: Shareefah Daud (64.14 per cent).
PAPERLESS: The headmaster of Palmridge Combined School, Hamrajh Singh (middle) and the grade 12 ‘hardworkers team’ display the new tablets they received from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).
REACH YOUR DREAM: When matric learners from Eden Park Secondary School started enquiring about careers and a way of achieving their aspirations and dreams, they received a visit from MSC Business College to talk to them about different career opportunities. Seen here are Kelly Steady and Simone Hermanus (seated, marketing for MSC Business College) and students from the college who paid the school a visit on August 20.
Pride of a young rising star TOP NOTCH: The pride of Palmridge Combined School, Ntokoza Mbata, with his class teacher Mrs S Pillay and the principal Mr H Sign (left). This Grade Three learner is a maths master and educators speak with pride about him. At the recent Grade Three mental maths challenge at cluster level, Ntokozo obtained first position which made his class teacher proud.

ARING duo, Enrico Schoeman and André de Kock from Alberton, will attempt another death-defying fire stunt at the Rhino Rally in Parys. Last year the pair rode a motorcycle through a fire tunnel and this stunt ensured that the duo set a new Guinness World Record. Preparations for this year’s stunt at the Rhino Rally are in full swing. The rally, over the weekend of September 4 and 5, will see a unique double stunt, involving two burning caravans, a burning car and a motorcycle, on the Friday evening. Enrico will jump a motorcycle through two burning caravans, parked side by side at the end of the road. A split second later, André will use a pipe ramp to barrel-roll a burning car through the same two caravans, landing on car wrecks placed further on. Both the car and several steel ramps have been constructed, while a dedicated group of experts are involved with the rest of the preparations. Schoeman has completed two practice sessions, jumping through fires the exact length of the two caravans, in a structure positioned on the premises of main event sponsor, RGC Brokers. The two stuntmen will also do a number of practice runs, without fire, at the stunt venue in Parys. “We need to thank many people who are involved, without whose help the whole stunt simply would not happen,” said Enrico Schoeman. The involved sponsors are RGC Brokers, NJR Steel, BikeSA, First Race, Auto Classics, Rave Castings, HMI Service Station, Cayenne Motorcycles, Henelec Switchboards and Life Adventures.

Annual Kaya FM 67KM Relay is fully under way at NASREC FM, said the event had grown over the last two years and that there was a need to identify a larger venue with the capacity to accommodate more people running the relay and choosing to make every day a Mandela Day. With the full support and endorsement of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the continued theme for the relay hangs on Madiba’s words: ‘It’s in your hands
now’. This theme speaks to the need for all South Africans to contribute to a better country, to be the custodians of integrity and to volunteer on Mandela Day and throughout the year to help those around them. “We know the participants of the relay are the beacons of light in their environments, upholding the principles that Tata Nelson Mandela gave us to take forward,”
said Sello Hatang, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The Kaya FM 67KM Relay is Gauteng’s premier corporate relay and a sporting highlight on the City of Johannesburg’s calendar. The event will be hosted by the City of Johannesburg Mayor, Parks Tau. Race organiser, GSE, has set a target of 1 200 teams and expect 12 000 runners on race day.

2015 road cycling season is on track RACE for Victory’s 20th edition will open the 2015 road cycling season on Sunday, September 13. The Rand Water Board will once again sponsor this elite cycling event with all the proceeds going towards the Frances Vorwerg School for cerebral palsied and learning disabled children. The renowned Boswell Wilkie Circus tent near Daleside is the new start and finish venue for the cycling race. The tent is situated 40km south of Johannesburg and 35km from Vereeniging. The Race for Victory routes are similar to last year’s, with a 150km elite route, a 110km classic route and a short 54km route for other riders. The beautiful but tough Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve provides the backdrop for the elite cyclists. 3 000 cyclists are expected to battle it out for the King of the Mountain (KOM) prize for the best climber in the Reserve, and a further R73 000 in cash as well as product prizes, will be up for grabs. Past winners include illustrious cyclists Alan van Heerden, Gary Beneke, Nic White, Darryl Impey, Malcolm Lange, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, Calvin Beneke and defending champion Eritrean Tesfom Okubamariam. Pundits consider the Race for Victory as the toughest one-day event on the South African cycling calendar. Early bird entries are available on www.raceforvictory.co.za and close on August 31. Late entries will also be taken on the day.

Greenstars now have a new soccer kit I
T was joy all around for the young Greenstars team in Greenfields when the players received donated soccer kit from Kargo AFC. Kargo AFC is developing young players from the age of 12 and older in the Alberton and surrounding areas and its executive members took the initiative to start a development club when they saw how most of the top players from Alberton and surrounds were leaving the game of soccer to either go and play other
sports or joining developing clubs elsewhere. Owen Twalela, coach of Greenstars FC said: “We are grateful to Trevor le Roux (financial director) and Leigh Oliveira (marketing manager) of Kargo National for sponsoring the kit to our young players. This is truly motivational to us.” Karco AFC is a club that plays in the Soweto Football Academy League where many of the PSL clubs have their development teams like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Platinum
Stars, Mamelodi Sundowns and Augusto Palacios Academy. “We at Kargo challenge all aspiring young footballers born in 1999 to 2004 to come and try out for our Academy League teams. This was started by a few individuals who recognised the need for developing young players from the age of 12,” said Trevor. Currently Kargo AFC u.13s are fifth out of 12 teams, the u.15s are third out of eight teams and the u.17s are first out of nine teams. The teams have,
and are playing in the following prestigious cup competitions being the VW Barrons Woodmead Masters (eventual winner to represent SA in France in 2016), the Nike Cup (currently Mamelodi Sundowns is playing in Manchester at Old Trafford) and the Engen Cup. “We at Kargo National sponsor and support the drive to develop these young players to their full potential and we are proud to be associated with this football club,” concluded Trevor.
THANK YOU: Leigh Oliveira (second from the right back) marketing manager of Kargo National and other staff members at the handover of the soccer kit to the Greenstars team in Greenfields.
Nedbank unveils final 2015 Ke Yona team AFTER months of training and preparation, the 2015 Nedbank Ke Yona team was finally unveiled on Tuesday, August 11. The experienced selection quartet of Shakes Mashaba, Owen Da Gama, Khabo Zondo and Mike Mangena handpicked the final 18-member squad, to take on the current Nedbank Cup champions, amongst thousands of aspiring footballers between the ages of 18 and 25. The 2015 edition of South Africa’s largest football talent search attracted more than 40 000 entries and got underway earlier this year in Mpumalanga, Free State, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Each province saw aspiring footballers put up their best performance leaving the four Ke Yona selectors to make tough selection choices. From the six provinces, 48 players were selected and invited to an intense bootcamp at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria where they were trained and conditioned by the best sports scientists while working closely with the four Ke Yona coaches. Not only did the footballers experience high quality training methods but Nedbank also provided financial education to the players to assist them in making sound financial decisions in their professional football careers. With the Ke Yona team search currently in its third edition, players such as Sydney Masana (Free State Stars), Maphosa Modiba (Mpumalanga Black Aces and SA u.20) and Khanya
Gwala (Orlando Pirates) are the examples of how Nedbank continues to make a meaningful difference in the various communities that it serves. The Ke Yona team will return to the High Performance Centre in Pretoria on August 27
for their final preparations before their highly anticipated match against Mamelodi Sundowns. Ke Yona’s first match will be at the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria on Sunday, September 6.
