In the 2011-2012 Season, when we premiered our Frisch’s Presents The NEW Nutcracker, we witnessed ticket sales surpassing every goal and expectation, attaining our first $2MM in annual ticket sales. We thought it could not get any better than that, then SURPRISE!, the 2012-2013 Season with ALICE (in wonderland), Romeo & Juliet, and Frampton & Cincinnati Ballet Live soared past all of our previous season ticket sales records to a new high of $2.3MM in revenue and 56,000 attendees. One must be analytical about attaining such milestones and ask why and how did these exceptional records in attendance and revenue occur? The following pages will address answers to those questions but, as you might imagine, the progress has been years in the making. Toward the end of the 2011-2012 Season we re-energized a strategic planning process, led by Kelly Brown, which included input from dancers, staff, board, donors and community leaders. In the 2012-2013 Season, we strove to attain every “hairy audacious” goal and proudly got very close or exceeded goals in every category. As we write this letter we have raised $6MM toward our endowment goal of $7MM and, through several years of operating surpluses, have generated for the first time ever a $1MM reserve fund. Some of Cincinnati Ballet’s most visually stunning and ambitious productions have occurred in recent years. ALICE (in wonderland) stirred the imagination of our community, creating a wave of interest and selling out final performances in Music Hall. Our community witnessed, for the first time, the great and historical work of George Balanchine’s Prodigal Son. The unique collaboration with Peter Frampton brought in a whole
new audience, redefining what “ballet” can be. Our reach into the community through CBII, Cincinnati Ballet’s Second Company, has locally and regionally lifted our presence in unexpected ways. The Academy saw record attendance in the Children’s Division, Adult Ballet, Rhythm & Motion and Summer Intensive programs. Our Education & Outreach programs touched 14,000 young lives through In-Step programs, CincyDance!, Ballet Moves and student matinees. It is on this note of success that we move into the 50th Anniversary during the 2013-2014 Season. We are running at high speed, just to keep up with the momentum that is pulling us forward into the whirl of celebration and hope for our future, with a sense of confidence that would have been impossible to imagine just a few years ago. Thank you to all who have been a part of the evolution of Cincinnati Ballet. We are here because you have been at our side. We are changing lives and making Cincinnati a more interesting and fun place to live through the art form of ballet. In its evolution of movement and expression it has embraced a variety of contemporary techniques that make this centuriesold vocabulary fresh and relevant.
Stay tuned to the next 50 years!

REVENUE Cincinnati Ballet met and exceeded its 2012-2013 ticketing sales goal. Total revenue, including facility and handling fees as well as student matinees, came in at $2,581,000, setting a new overall ticket revenue record. Average ticket price increased by $1.09 from the 2011-2012 Season. AT T E N D A N C E In the 2012-2013 Season, Cincinnati Ballet saw an increase in attendance. 6,209 more people came to see the Ballet than in the 2011-2012 Season. And that’s not due to giving away seats. In fact, complimentary tickets, which include media trades for advertising, only increased by 99 seats, which means over 6,000 more people purchased tickets in the 20122013 Season than in the previous season. M U LT I P L E R E C O R D S B R O K E N ALICE (in wonderland) became Cincinnati Ballet’s best selling show in terms of revenue in October 2012. This was only the second time that a non-Nutcracker production brought in over $300,000, exceeding the record that Cinderella previously set in 2009. ALICE (in wonderland) earned a total of $350,767.50 in revenue. The revenue record set by ALICE (in wonderland), was a short lived one. In February 2013, Romeo & Juliet set a new record for a non-Nutcracker production of $355,950.70. There was another production in the 2012-2013 Season that pushed ticketing over the $300,000 mark for the fourth time — Frampton & Cincinnati Ballet Live. This show, which only included three performances (one less than ALICE (in wonderland) and Romeo & Juliet), brought in a total of $331,279.25.

In its 49th year, Cincinnati Ballet has held fast to the promise of inspiring hope and joy in the community and beyond through the beauty, power, and passion of dance. Overall, fundraising revenue for the 2012-2013 Season increased compared to the previous year but fell just shy of the $3MM goal. Facing several challenges (not the least being an aggressive capital campaign for the 2014 world premiere of King Arthur’s Camelot and major personnel changes among the Development Team) there were many great successes including increased support of educational initiatives, world-class performances, government grants and major gifts. Thanks to the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, Cincinnati Ballet’s success was also driven by matching grant challenges which helped secure additional Trustee and individual support at the end of the fiscal year.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS Cincinnati Ballet continued to raise the bar for fundraising events in 2012-2013 beginning with The Children’s Nutcracker Luncheon. The event, chaired by Jenny Freese and Susan Grayson Hill, has become a beloved holiday tradition for families with a kid-friendly lunch, a magician, carolers and, as always, excerpts from The Nutcracker performed by Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy. The Luncheon was a huge success with more than 600 guests (both children and adults) filling the Duke Energy Center for an afternoon of ballet and festive activities. Club B, the final event of the season, was in many ways the most successful Club B to date. The evening began with an elegant champagne toast in honor of long-time supporters and Honorary Chairs Mike and Kathy Selker. Club B guests then danced the night away between dinner by the bite and cocktails. Led by Co-Chairs, Ann Gibson and Julie Richardson, this event engaged new and passionate members of the community and increased attendance, sponsorship and awareness. Most notably, Club B generated the most revenue among all fundraisers in the 2012-2013 Season at $87,001.

ENDOWMENT As Cincinnati Ballet looks forward to its 50th Anniversary, our company is determined, now more than ever, to leave a legacy for generations to come through operating reserves and other financial safeguards — including an endowment. As such, The Set to Soar Endowment Campaign was launched in the 2012-2013 Season as an investment in the future. During the beginning (or “Silent”) phase of the campaign, Cincinnati Ballet exceeded $5MM in committed endowment funds, raising $4MM in just one year. To protect and manage these funds, the Cincinnati Ballet Foundation was established, overseen by experienced financial and arts leaders in the community including Otto M. Budig as President, Jack Rouse, James A. Miller, Dianne Dunkelman, Larry Kellar, Rhonda Sheakley, Russ Shelton and Pamela Schmitt. These foundation Trustees have been charged with the task of managing Cincinnati Ballet’s endowment investments and dispersing funds to Cincinnati Ballet based upon a percentage of the invested funds’ rolling twelve quarter average. This is a particularly powerful concept, delivering a perpetual, consistent source of funding to ensure that Cincinnati Ballet remains a steadfast cultural treasure and a vital resource to the community for generations to come.

Otto M. Budig Academy Report Catherine Batcheller, Academy Dean Nicole Hess, Academy Operations Manager
The Otto M. Budig team started the 2012-2013 Season with one new staff member, Sabir Yapparov. Mr. Yapparov joined the Academy on September 1, 2012 as Academy Principal, the first full-time faculty member in the history of the Academy. He immediately set to work improving the number and skill of the male dancers in the Academy. In the 2012-2013 Season, Mr. Yapparov expanded the offerings for male students to three classes focusing on Boys Class for Levels Two and Three, Boys Class for Levels Four through Seven, and the incredibly popular Boys Conditioning Class which brought together Main Division boys from all levels. The Young Boys Class continued under the watchful eye of Mr. James Cunningham with enrollment growing from four students in 2011-2012 to ten students in 2012-2013. It is an exciting time for boys at Cincinnati Ballet! SUMMER PROGRAMS The Academy also experienced exceptional growth in its summer programs and camps. The Summer Intensive program attracted 132 students who attended for varying lengths of time from one to five weeks. Demand for the program was so high that the Academy enrolled more students than in any previous season. Students came from 20 different states as well as Canada. Camps geared toward younger students—Junior Summer Intensive, Summer Dance Workshop, Summer Dance Experience and Kids Dance Camp—were also a success and attracted students from Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and West Virginia. Overall, the total Summer Intensive revenue reached $185,830, 109% of its goal.

The 2012-2013 Summer Intensive program also saw a major change in housing facilities for students. This year’s students were housed at Xavier University. As a result, the housing expense for the 2012-2013 Season decreased by 30%. PROGRAM GROWTH The Adult program is expanding and has seen tremendous growth at the Blue Ash location with the number of attendees increasing by 28%. Several upper level students from the Summer Intensive have joined the Academy to study year round — four relocated to Cincinnati and three students commute from area schools to train with the Academy.

The Academy Task Force, led by Trustees David Cook, Debbie Brant and Lauren LaCerda and staff members Nicole Hess and Craig Lattarulo, had the challenging task of looking at the profitability and potential of the Academy. Collectively the Academy, Rhythm & Motion and Education & Outreach represent approximately 16% of Cincinnati Ballet’s operating budget. Several months of studies and data analysis have shown that these three components of Cincinnati Ballet are driving sources of profit for the company as a whole. Academy Dean Catherine Batcheller coached and led Academy student Daniel Durrett to Youth America Grand Prix. He advanced to the final round at the International Competition in New York where he was seen and courted by many prestigious companies and schools before joining Houston Ballet II for the 2013-2014 Season. The Academy also wished several senior students well as they continue on in dance programs at Milwaukee Ballet II, Festival Ballet, Loyola University, Indiana University, Ohio State University and Northern Kentucky University.

Education & Outreach Report Julie Sunderland, Director of Education
CINCYDANCE! Cincinnati Ballet’s CincyDance! program (presented by Cincinnati Bell) brings six weeks of ballet classes focusing on body awareness, discipline and respect to primarily Title 1 schools. This season, Cincinnati Ballet had the chance to dance with 1,069 third graders. At the end of six weeks, the most talented students from each of the 33 classes are invited to a 20-week Ballet Foundations class through the Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy. Graduates from this program are eligible for a full scholarship in the fall. Five students with the potential to become professional dancers were accepted on scholarship. New schools added in the 2012-2013 Season included Roberts Paidea Academy, Reese E. Price Academy and John P. Parker Elementary. C R E AT I V E M O V E M E N T R E S I D E N C I E S & W O R K S H O P S Cincinnati Ballet’s Education Department is the leader in afterschool dance programming in the Greater Cincinnati area. Cincinnati public schools funded by United Way, the YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs contract Cincinnati Ballet teachers for five hours of afterschool programming a week. With classes in hip hop, ballet, jazz and musical theater, Cincinnati Ballet is the leader in all genres of afterschool dance for students. More than 800 children were reached in the 2012-2013 Season.
IN STEP Cincinnati Ballet’s popular lecture demonstration program was brought to new and familiar places this season. Demonstrations included a fourth annual visit to the Deupree House and the Women’s Cultural Center known as the Barn, the third year creating the Teas and Tiaras event at the Anderson Community Center and a second visit to the entire education system of Augusta, Kentucky. New partnerships were created with Modern Makers whose mission is to build cultural exchange while cultivating artistic and environmental learning opportunities. NE W ADVENTU RES In keeping with Cincinnati Ballet’s Education Department’s mission of making a difference through dance, access was broadened in new ways for the 2012-2013 Season with a pilot program, titled Ballet Moves, for children with varying abilities and a celebration with the Cure Starts Now.
EDUCATION & OUTREACH

Ballet Moves was designed as an all-inclusive ballet class for children and teens with varying abilities. The success of this six week program has prompted a collaboration with Children’s Hospital and a full semester of Ballet Moves for the upcoming season, generously sponsored by Tom and Mary Ellen Cody. The Cure Starts Now is a life changing organization dedicated to curing cancer, one child at a time. Cincinnati Ballet hosted a glorious day at its facility where children enjoyed a class taught by Principal Dancer Sarah Hairston, created tutus, had makeup done by Sephora and took part in a photo shoot with a Prince. Cincinnati Ballet is thrilled to be hosting this event again next season.

Financial Report Craig Lattarulo, Chief Financial Officer
In the 2012-2013 Season, Cincinnati Ballet exceeded its overall ticket sales goal by $236K to exceed $2MM in total ticketing revenue for the second consecutive year, thanks largely to the success of ALICE (in wonderland), Romeo & Juliet and Frampton & Cincinnati Ballet Live. With the successful management of the operating budget and close monitoring of revenue and expense activity, the season ended with just slight variances from budget to actual for operating. Overall, the $6.8MM operating revenue budget was exceeded by $274K (4%). Expenses only exceeded the $6.8MM budget by $68K (1%). The reservation of the $137K contingency budget along with an additional operating surplus will be applied to Cincinnati Ballet’s operating reserves, marking the sixth consecutive year of an operating surplus. From 2007 through the end of 2012, Cincinnati Ballet’s net asset base has grown from $4.1MM to $6.4MM, representing a 56% increase — the result of accumulated operating surpluses and Frisch’s Presents The New Nutcracker capital. The King Arthur’s Camelot initiative paired with operating reserves will further increase the base in the upcoming season. For the 2013-2014 Season, the operating budget has increased to approximately $7.0MM. This $179K increase over the 2012-2013 budget is the result of increased production costs due to exciting artistic programming, the world premiere of King Arthur’s Camelot and increased staffing needs. Cincinnati Ballet staff continues to budget for contingencies and challenge expenses to further increase reserve funds and cash flow.
