ONE GENERATION PLANTS THE TREES; ANOTHER GETS THE SHADE.
From the time Cincinnati was a village surrounding old Fort Washington when soldiers would present concerts for the settlement, the arts were valued and generations before us took measures to ensure that we too would have the chance to appreciate them. The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation takes pride in supporting Cincinnati Ballet in its 50th 49th Season. We encourage you to join us in preserving this rich heritage.
DEAR CINCINNATI BALLET LOVERS, I want you to digress with me a minute. There’s a great moment in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that’s been on my mind as of late. On part of their factory tour, Wonka’s small band of prize-winning guests comes to a grinding halt in front of a steel-cased door that could rival a high-security bank vault. Wonka turns, his face uncharacteristically grave, and he issues a stern warning of secrecy as he ever-so-formally invites them into…The Inventing Room. As they walk into the cavernous space, they know with unspoken certainty that they are getting an exclusive glimpse into the future of candy making. In many ways, New Works is our Inventing Room. And tonight, you have a Golden Ticket. Rest assured, there’s no vow of secrecy. No non-disclosure agreement. In fact, we’d be disappointed if you didn’t share the amazing things in store for you here. But make no mistake. You will see our industry secrets, our products in development, in a way that few others have. For our P&G affiliates in the audience, think of it as our Research and Development Department. Like any inventor, New Works is our opportunity to play with raw material in uncustomary ways. Instead of new flavors, textures and aromas, we explore new tempos, new movement philosophies and new theories of space. These are the ingredients of dance. And the pairings are endless. You may not like everything you see today. (There’s a small part of me that secretly hopes you don’t.) I do want you to have a superlative experience and I’m confident you’ll discover some brilliant dance making. But New Works is also about refining your own palette. And the beauty of these communal experiences is that we all have different tastes. I’ve come to realize that our New Works audience is special. The thrill of the “new.” The anticipation of discovery. It brought you here. To this corner of Over the Rhine where mysteries are revealed. Not all mysteries are beloved. But they challenge us. And we are made the better for them. A quick glance at the news will assure you that Cincinnati is quickly earning a reputation as a hotbed of innovation - entrepreneurial, forward thinking and deliciously inventive. It would be uncouth of us to take credit for starting such a trend, but with New Works celebrating its 9th anniversary and a long list of world premieres behind us, I’ll let you draw your own conclusions. On the dawn of our 50th Anniversary Season, I can’t think of a better way to start this year than by sharing our secrets with you. Treasure them. Dissect them. And be bold in your opinions. We have. But pace yourself. This is just the beginning... Your not-so-secretive Artistic Director and CEO, Victoria Morgan

SACRED GROUND
WORLD PREMIERE CHOREOGRAPHER: Jodie Gates MUSIC: Over the Rhine Karin Berquist, Linford Detweiler LIGHTING: Trad A Burns COSTUMES: Christine Joly de Lotbiniere
Sacred Ground is inspired and driven by the musical selection. The soulful sounds
composed and performed by Over the Rhine carry the work through a honest sense of humanity. The abstract ballet demonstrates intertwining spirals and gestural movements that string together community and diverse relationships. Unattainable memories are seen through the eyes of a solo female figure that seems to be conducting the past, present and future as she weaves through each relationship.

WORLD PREMIERE:
The Man in Black, originally commissioned by BalletMet Columbus and given its premiere in
April 2010, is a celebration of American working-class grit and of the man whose gravely voice embodied it so movingly, Johnny Cash. Six Cash songs – all covers from the later part of his career – are given visual resonance in a suite of dances for an ensemble of three men and a woman, all in cowboy boots. The choreography riffs off several popular American country-western dance styles – line, square, swing, step dancing – retaining their vernacular, almost colloquial character yet generating imagery that complements the songs’ varying moods and emotional undercurrents. The “Damn your eyes” defiance of the traditional folk song Sam Hall contrasts with the aching melancholy of Trent Reznor’s (Nine Inch Nails) Hurt and heartache of Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My Mind. Dance chains unravel and reassemble in surprising ways. Formations stomp decisively or glide across the stage as if wafted by a desert breeze. The fluid partnering and sculptural groupings generate a stream of arrestingly poetic images. Rather than portray defined characters, the dancers project a naturalistic immediacy that connects at a visceral level with the spirit of the music. The choreography, like the songs that inspire it, is an ode to the human spirit, socially congenial yet proudly independent; vulnerable yet resilient.

CHOREOGRAPHERS (continued) JAMES KUDELKA
James Kudelka is widely acknowledged as one of North America’s most innovative choreographers. His mastery of both classical ballet and modern/contemporary dance has earned him commissions from companies—some 25 in all—as stylistically diverse as American Ballet Theatre, Chicago’s Hubbard Street Dance and Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. As a student at Canada’s National Ballet School, Kudelka demonstrated a choreographic interest in exploring innovative approaches. He infuses classical ballet vocabulary with a contemporary sensibility acquired from his intense interest in modern movement idioms. Kudelka’s work covers an impressive range, from virtuoso pas de deux, through large-scale adaptations of classics Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Cinderella, to innovative collaborations with dancers, designers and musicians. After nine distinguished years as artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada (1996-2005) James Kudelka continues to undertake collaborative projects that engage and challenge him as a choreographer. VAL CANIPAROLI
Val Caniparoli’s versatility has made him one of the most sought after choreographers in the United States and abroad. Although he is most closely associated with San Francisco Ballet, his artistic home for more than 30 years, Caniparoli has contributed to the repertories of more than 40 companies, including Joffrey Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, Pennsylvania Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Ballet West, Washington Ballet, Israel Ballet, Richmond Ballet, Louisville Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, Atlanta Ballet, State Theatre Ballet of South Africa and Tulsa Ballet. Caniparoli has also choreographed for the Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. He has worked on several occasions with the San Francisco Symphony, most recently on the Rimsky-Korsakov opera-ballet Mlada, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Caniparoli has been the recipient of ten grants for choreography from the National Endowment for the Arts, an artist fellowship from the California Arts Council, and two awards from the Choo-San Goh and H. Robert Magee Foundation. Work with American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco includes choreography for A Christmas Carol (2005), the 2004 production of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and the creation, with Carey Perloff, of a new movement-theater piece, Tosca Cafe.

PRINCIPAL DANCERS CERVILIO MIGUEL AMADOR
Camaguey, Cuba - Joined in 2004 “I didn’t want to be a dancer,” says Amador, now in his eighth year as Principal Dancer at Cincinnati Ballet. Initially athletic and interested in playing the saxophone, Amador’s parents gently nudged him towards ballet at the age of nine, and he’s been hooked ever since.“It’s one of those things that is so hard, and you wake up in the morning and your body basically doesn’t want to move because it’s so tired and it’s so sore and in so much pain, but you go and do it, and after you do it, the next day you just love it again. I love it. It’s like an addiction. It’s a really hard career, but it becomes this passion, this addiction. You just need it.” FUN FACT: Cervilio has his own YouTube channel: Cervilio Amador.
SARAH HAIRSTON
Charleston, South Carolina - Joined in 2001 After seeing a Broadway production of Cats as a child, watching the actors prowl around on stage, Hairston was hooked on the limelight. “Unfortunately I cannot sing, so classical ballet seemed to be a better route to take!” she says. Dancing since nearly three years old, Hairston trained at Calvert Brodie School of Dance under Ann Brodie, North Carolina School of the Arts and Boston Ballet, where she then danced professionally before joining Cincinnati Ballet. Hairston faced her share of adversity since joining Cincinnati Ballet in 2001, overcoming two grueling ACL injuries in three years. “It was a struggle to come back both times, and I felt at times that people would not trust my dancing and believe in me again,” she says. “However, then I realized that if I believed in myself, that was all that mattered.” Hairston also credits her students at Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy with immense emotional support and inspiration. “It makes this amazing career I have even more worth it....to be a role model for a child is the best feeling.” FUN FACT: You can follow Sarah on Instagram: @sarahanddakota
JANESSA TOUCHET
Photography: Peter Mueller
New Orleans, Louisiana - Joined in 2001 Touchet will never forget her 19th birthday. That was the day Victoria Morgan came to Pacific Northwest Ballet, to audition Touchet’s professional division. “Directors from everywhere auditioned us, but nobody ever picked me,” she says. “I remember thinking she wouldn’t like me anyway, so I told myself to just have fun, and after it was over, she said, ‘I’d like to talk to Janessa’.” Crossed wires with communicating Touchet’s acceptance of Morgan’s apprenticeship offer led to a planned spot with Memphis Ballet, but Morgan called one last time and Touchet was able to come to Cincinnati Ballet instead. “I was meant to be here. I started as an apprentice and moved all the way through the ranks. I had always had my heart and mind set on Cincinnati Ballet.” Prior to joining Cincinnati Ballet, Touchet trained with the Delta Festival Ballet under the direction of Joseph Giacobbe, Giacobbe Academy of Dance, Hartford Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet. FUN FACT: Janessa’s favorite food is McDonald’s French fries.

A commemorative, special edition publication illuminating Cincinnati Ballet’s remarkable rise to one of our country’s preeminent ballet companies. WRITTEN BY DAVID LYMAN
NOW AVAILABLE! A BRIEF EXCERPT FROM THE MCLAIN ERA, CINCINNATI BALLET CELEBRATES 50:
“[David McLain’s] intention, he said, was to leave the company by June 16, 1983. He sealed the three copies of the letter. But he never sent them. He and Blackburn had been talking about leaving for several years. But there was always a next season that was too enticing to leave. McLain was ambitious, but it was for all the right reasons. He wanted ballet – and this company – to succeed. He wanted ballet to thrive. There was always another neglected masterpiece to save. On Friday, December 15 – the same night his company was opening The Nutcracker in New Orleans – David McLain died. The envelopes containing his resignation letters would remain sealed until 2012.”
