ONE GENERATION PLANTS THE TREES; ANOTHER GETS THE SHADE.

From the time Cincinnati was a village surrounding old Fort Washington when soldiers would present concerts for the settlement, the arts were valued and generations before us took measures to ensure that we too would have the chance to appreciate them. The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation takes pride in supporting Cincinnati Ballet in its 50th 49th Season. We encourage you to join us in preserving this rich heritage.

DEAR CINCINNATI BALLET LOVERS, A quick read through of the story of Swan Lake and you’re bound to feel slightly suspect. Evil sorcerer. Magic spell. Swan by day. Woman by night. True love found. True love lost. Double suicide. Happily ever afterlife. It’s a bit much. And we didn’t even mention the lake of tears. Swan Lake is your classic boy meets girl story…on steroids. With the sorcery of a Grimm fairy tale, the tragedy of a Shakespearean romance, a touch of ornithology and the double crossing betrayal of a Holmesian detective novel, we have the ultimate super tale. On the surface, it seems unreasonable. But we’ve been revisiting this tall tale for over a century. So we have to stop and wonder - Why? Fast forward to a modern context. If you look closely, there are significant parallels to our own experience. With the passage of time, life casts all kinds of evil spells. They may not feel as mystical but they are every bit as real. Insecurities begin to lurk. Anxiety haunts the recesses of our mind. Past pain forms its scars. And eventually, we may become so entangled by fear that we’re only revealing a small portion of who we are to the world - a carefully disguised and guarded version of our original design. Strip away the feathers and moonlit lake and we’re no different than Odette, the white swan. We’re trapped. Living only half truths. The polished executive by day. The hopeless wanderer by night. The dutiful son. The domestic goddess. The innovative entrepreneur. The budding young artist. Our daytime personas aspire to picture perfect pleasantry. But they all come with alter egos that are part of our larger person. And they’re stifled, pounding at the surface to be unleashed. Watching Swan Lake requires some suspension of disbelief. No doubt. But in that disbelief we recognize an unshakable truth - the belief that love, real love, frees us and empowers us to be the fullest version of ourselves. Love offers hope of transcendence. The freedom to drop the façade and become fully realized. To be whole. I’m not talking about completion. The parts were always there. But love uniquely allows us to engage the potential of our whole self. If you take stock of those people or circumstances in your life that have access to all of you, I have no doubt that a great deal of love is found there. To be idealistically romantic in this sense does not separate us from life, it opens us up to a larger life. It’s so easy to pass off these fanciful tales as the foolish stories of youth. But with age, I often discover that they had it right all along. As you watch the story of Swan Lake unfold before you and consider the great loves of your own life, I hope the words of C.S. Lewis begin to ring true, “Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” Your ever-in-love Artistic Director and CEO,

WORLD PREMIERE:

March 4, 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow with choreography by Julius Reisinger. The world premiere of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s version of Swan Lake, the one known and loved by most audiences today, premiered February 8, 1895 at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. CINCINNATI BALLET PREMIERE*:

October 23, 1992 with choreography by Nigel Burgoine after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. * Premiere of the full-length version of Swan Lake. Cincinnati Ballet performed Act II many times in earlier seasons.

We are proud to present more than 45 Cincinnati Ballet and BalletMet Columbus dancers performing together in the most beloved classical ballet of all time. A signature of famed choreographer Lev Ivanov was lavish corps de ballet scenes; by combining Cincinnati Ballet and BalletMet, there are enough high-level professional dancers to fulfill the original choreographic vision. The titular swan of Swan Lake is the queen of a flock of swans. By combining companies, there will be 24 female corps de ballet dancers onstage instead of the 12 that is more typically seen in regional singlecompany productions. This production marks the fourth collaboration between Cincinnati Ballet and BalletMet Columbus. The companies previously danced together in Balanchine’s Jewels (2003), Stars and Stripes (2006) and Swan Lake (2009). Swan Lake was presented at the Ohio Theater in Downtown Columbus the weekend of October 18-20, 2013. The two companies will reunite in March 2014 for a mixed repertory program featuring George Balanchine’s Symphony in C, Victoria Morgan’s Boléro and Wunderland, an intricately beautiful ballet by BalletMet Columbus Artistic Director Edwaard Liang.

CHOREOGRAPHER DEVON CARNEY ON SWAN LAKE:

Having the opportunity to be able to create my own staging of such a significant work as that of the Swan Lake “White Acts,” which are Acts II and IV, is quite a tremendous undertaking in its own right which I did for Cincinnati Ballet in 2006. To further the complexity of mounting such a time-honored work I have had the privilege to now, for the second time, recreate these acts in the combined collaborative production which Cincinnati Ballet and BalletMet are presenting. The White Acts have some of the most difficult corps de ballet work known in the classical ballet repertoire and it is so wonderful to have the chance to return to this production again and see how successfully the BalletMet and Cincinnati Ballet women perform it. I have performed in Swan Lake as a dancer during my career countless times but it is so much more rewarding now to be able to guide these fine young artists in their pursuit of the perfectly unified corps d’esprit. Additionally to work with the leading dancers in the roles of Odette, Siegfried and Von Rothbart is a sheer joy to see these great classic roles come to life again. They are timeless characters from one of the most well known ballets of all time which are all very personal to me and have been with me my entire professional life in the arts. I am thrilled to once again be a part of the choreographic team that will present this exciting production of Swan Lake.

SYNOPSIS

ACT I It’s Prince Siegfried’s 21st birthday and royal guests have gathered to celebrate his coming of age. The revelries are interrupted when the Queen Mother arrives to give the Prince a crossbow for his birthday. She reminds him that because he is of age now, he must choose a wife at the royal ball the following evening. Siegfried reluctantly agrees but is distraught at the thought of not being able to marry for love. The celebration continues, but Benno, Siegfried’s best friend, notices Siegfried’s melancholy mood. Benno and his friends try to lift Siegfried’s spirits but he insists on being alone. Finally, they return and convince him to join them as they go hunting in the forest. ACT II Siegfried arrives at a lakeside clearing as a flock of swans lands nearby. He aims his crossbow, ready to shoot, just as one of them transforms into a beautiful woman, Odette. Siegfried is instantly enchanted by her. Initially, she is terrified, but as Siegfried assures her that he will not harm her, she reveals that she and her companions are victims of a terrible spell cast by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. Doomed to live as swans by day, they return to human form only at night by the side of the enchanted lake, formed by the tears of their parents. The spell can only be broken by the oath of faithful love from one who has never loved before. The Prince, enraptured, swears his eternal love to Odette. Von Rothbart suddenly appears. Siegfried threatens to kill him but Odette intercedes. If Von Rothbart dies before the spell is broken, she will remain a swan forever. Siegfried’s companions finally arrive with their crossbows aimed at the maidens but Siegfried stops them just in time and dismisses them. Alone with Odette, he dances with her until dawn. As the sun begins to rise, Von Rothbart’s evil spell descends upon the maidens, causing them once again to become swans. Siegfried is left alone to watch his love glide across the lake and fly away. ACT III At the royal ball the following day, Prince Siegfried dances with the eligible princesses but can think only of Odette. After dancers from Poland, Hungary, Spain and Italy entertain the crowd, Siegfried’s mother commands him to choose a bride. The Prince keeps his vow to Odette and will accept no one.

Trumpets sound announcing the arrival of new guests. Von Rothbart appears disguised as a noble with his daughter, Odile. Siegfried is transfixed by Odile, as she has been bewitched to look like Odette. As they dance together, Odette is seen in the far window of the castle vainly trying to warn Siegfried of this deception. Von Rothbart makes sure she is not noticed. In front of the royal court, the Prince announces his intention to marry Odile whom he believes to be Odette. Immediately, Von Rothbart reveals their true identities and Siegfried realizes that he has been tricked into breaking his oath to Odette. Grief stricken, he rushes out of the castle toward the lake. ACT IV Back at the lake, Odette is distraught. The swan maidens try to comfort her but she is inconsolable. Siegfried finds Odette and begs her to forgive him. The swans depart, but Odette remains as the two reaffirm their love and Odette grants him her forgiveness. They are interrupted by Von Rothbart and a fight ensues. Rather than live apart, Odette and Siegfried throw themselves from a high rock into the lake. As the raging waters consume their bodies, Von Rothbart’s spell is broken. His power has finally come to an end and the swan maidens are free. Although no longer in the world of the living, the spirits of Odette and Siegfried are together as a new dawn rises.

CHOREOGRAPHERS VICTORIA MORGAN (Please see Victoria’s biography on the pervious page) DEVON CARNEY Devon Carney, Artistic Director of Kansas City Ballet beginning with the 2013-2014 season, has just finished 10 years with Cincinnati Ballet as Associate Artistic Director. His early training was with the legendary Harvey Hysell of New Orleans, LA. He was a Principal dancer with Boston Ballet for 12 of his 20 professional performing years. Carney has performed many leading roles in classical ballets and in cutting-edge works by Mark Morris, Maurice Bejart and Merce Cunningham to name a few. In addition, he performed a diverse Balanchine repertoire and toured extensively with greats such as Rudolph Nureyev and Cynthia Gregory. With Boston Ballet, he was Ballet Master and Artistic Director of their Summer Dance Program for 8 years. Mr. Carney’s teaching credits include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Guangzhou Ballet among others. He has choreographed for Boston Ballet, BalletMet, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet and Jacob’s Pillow Dance. In 2011 Carney choreographed for Cincinnati Opera’s A Flowering Tree by John Adams with a review in Opera News, “Devon Carney’s choreography was both athletic and exquisite.” With Cincinnati Ballet he created over 20 original works including Blue Rondo and World Citizen. “Carney’s work is not only well crafted but moody and intense with a palpable sense of loneliness. His work grows more confident and more skillful with every piece he creates” (David Lyman, Cincinnati Enquirer). Recently he created Boot It Up! which was performed with the live musical accompaniment of rock legend Peter Frampton. Additionally, he created a full length world premiere of Dracula and has created his versions of the great classics of Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and the white acts of Swan Lake. | Photography: Ken Coit

PRINCIPAL DANCERS CERVILIO MIGUEL AMADOR

Camaguey, Cuba - Joined in 2004 “I didn’t want to be a dancer,” says Amador, now in his eighth year as Principal Dancer at Cincinnati Ballet. Initially athletic and interested in playing the saxophone, Amador’s parents gently nudged him towards ballet at the age of nine, and he’s been hooked ever since.“It’s one of those things that is so hard, and you wake up in the morning and your body basically doesn’t want to move because it’s so tired and it’s so sore and in so much pain, but you go and do it, and after you do it, the next day you just love it again. I love it. It’s like an addiction. It’s a really hard career, but it becomes this passion, this addiction. You just need it.” FUN FACT: Cervilio has his own YouTube channel: Cervilio Amador.

SARAH HAIRSTON

Charleston, South Carolina - Joined in 2001 After seeing a Broadway production of Cats as a child, watching the actors prowl around on stage, Hairston was hooked on the limelight. “Unfortunately I cannot sing, so classical ballet seemed to be a better route to take!” she says. Dancing since nearly three years old, Hairston trained at Calvert Brodie School of Dance under Ann Brodie, North Carolina School of the Arts and Boston Ballet, where she then danced professionally before joining Cincinnati Ballet. Hairston faced her share of adversity since joining Cincinnati Ballet in 2001, overcoming two grueling ACL injuries in three years. “It was a struggle to come back both times, and I felt at times that people would not trust my dancing and believe in me again,” she says. “However, then I realized that if I believed in myself, that was all that mattered.” Hairston also credits her students at Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy with immense emotional support and inspiration. “It makes this amazing career I have even more worth it....to be a role model for a child is the best feeling.” FUN FACT: You can follow Sarah on Instagram: @sarahanddakota

JANESSA TOUCHET

Photography: Peter Mueller The Kaplan New Works Series, 2013

New Orleans, Louisiana - Joined in 2001 Touchet will never forget her 19th birthday. That was the day Victoria Morgan came to Pacific Northwest Ballet, to audition Touchet’s professional division. “Directors from everywhere auditioned us, but nobody ever picked me,” she says. “I remember thinking she wouldn’t like me anyway, so I told myself to just have fun, and after it was over, she said, ‘I’d like to talk to Janessa’.” Crossed wires with communicating Touchet’s acceptance of Morgan’s apprenticeship offer led to a planned spot with Memphis Ballet, but Morgan called one last time and Touchet was able to come to Cincinnati Ballet instead. “I was meant to be here. I started as an apprentice and moved all the way through the ranks. I had always had my heart and mind set on Cincinnati Ballet.” Prior to joining Cincinnati Ballet, Touchet trained with the Delta Festival Ballet under the direction of Joseph Giacobbe, Giacobbe Academy of Dance, Hartford Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet. FUN FACT: Janessa’s favorite food is McDonald’s French fries.

A commemorative, special edition publication illuminating Cincinnati Ballet’s remarkable rise to one of our country’s preeminent ballet companies. WRITTEN BY DAVID LYMAN

NOW AVAILABLE! A BRIEF EXCERPT FROM THE MCLAIN ERA, CINCINNATI BALLET CELEBRATES 50:

“[David McLain’s] intention, he said, was to leave the company by June 16, 1983. He sealed the three copies of the letter. But he never sent them. He and Blackburn had been talking about leaving for several years. But there was always a next season that was too enticing to leave. McLain was ambitious, but it was for all the right reasons. He wanted ballet – and this company – to succeed. He wanted ballet to thrive. There was always another neglected masterpiece to save. On Friday, December 15 – the same night his company was opening The Nutcracker in New Orleans – David McLain died. The envelopes containing his resignation letters would remain sealed until 2012.”

PRESENTING SPONSORS:

In a community-wide initiative described by sold-out audiences as “fascinating,” “moving,” and “soaring,” Louis Langrée and the CSO are proud to reprise One City, One Symphony. We’ll again bring our community together in a remarkable shared experience to explore the themes of fate and redemption in Tchaikovsky’s lushly romantic Symphony No. 4 and in a beautiful but nearly forgotten work by Mozart, Davide penitente.

Listen. Share. Enjoy.

Dancer Spotlight INTRODUCING KEVIN HAMILTON

Kevin Hamilton began dancing at age 6, inspired after seeing a free community performance of Swan Lake by Kansas City Ballet. In Kansas City, Missouri, 20-year-old Hamilton trained with Laura Reindschmidt and Luke Luzicka. He attendedsummer programs on scholarship at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Boston Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet and The Washington Ballet and spent the past two season with Milwaukee Ballet II. Hamilton says he fell in love with ballet when he got to “the point when I realized that I would never stop learning.” Hamilton’s favorite dancer is Michael Jackson, and his favorite ballet to watch is Romeo & Juliet, the lead role of which he hopes to dance one day. Hamilton is most excited about being a part of and experiencing Cincinnati Ballet’s 50th Anniversary Season. Fun Fact: Kevin’s favorite pump-up song is What Is Love by Haddaway.
