ONE GENERATION PLANTS THE TREES; ANOTHER GETS THE SHADE.

From the time Cincinnati was a village surrounding old Fort Washington when soldiers would present concerts for the settlement, the arts were valued and generations before us took measures to ensure that we too would have the chance to appreciate them. The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation takes pride in supporting Cincinnati Ballet in its 51st 49th Season. We encourage you to join us in preserving this rich heritage.

DEAR CINCINNATI BALLET LOVERS, “The truest expression of a people is in its dances and its music. Bodies never lie.” I’ve read these words by Agnes de Mille at least a hundred times and for years I’ve overlooked their poignant ending. But it’s those final three words which prove most significant. Our bodies reveal us. They tell our stories, whether we intend them to or not. From our stance at the head of a boardroom table to the tilt of our head as we check on a sleeping child, our most powerful communication is unspoken. Few of us would qualify ourselves as dancers. But I’m going to tell you a little secret. You are one. Life moves you. Your body responds. And thus you engage in dancemaking uniquely your own. Your physical form, powered by forces both external and within, gives shape to your truest self in the most compelling language available, the language of the body. Contemporary choreographer Crystal Pite perhaps says it best: “Humans move. Our arms reach, our knees collapse, our heads nod, our chests cave in, our backs arch. We clench our fists. We jump. We shrug. We pick each other up. We push each other away. And for me this is language as much as it is action. This is what the body has to say about need, defeat, courage, despair, desire, joy, ambivalence, frustration, love. I think that these images resonate meaningfully in our minds because we have all felt these things so purely in our bodies. We have been moved.” Choreographers work with the body because they are convinced of its profound ability to communicate. And that in our shared physical form, we, the audience, relate. In the end, dance is nothing more than conversation. Wildly silent. Intensely present. Endlessly captivating. The conversations we engage in tonight are incited by voices not often heard. Of late, female choreographers have been a rarity in our field. Not so today. The performance you are about to partake in features four of them, each with a world premiere work you are the first to witness. Each with a physical dialogue intended for you above all others. The choreographer Agnes de Mille was a pioneer of dance long before we were aware of the lack of female leaders in our form. She merely knew she had something to communicate. And the body was her voice. In more ways than one, she paved the way for the works you’ll see today. In watching these dances unfold before you, take note of your response. As your eyes widen, your breath shortens, your heart skips or your chest swells, you dance in turn. And thus reveal the truth behind de Mille’s words - bodies never lie. Yours truly in the language of the body,

Victoria Morgan The Sue and Bill Friedlander Artistic Director & CEO

ABOVE THE BOX World Premiere Performed by: Elementz Studio Kre8v Choreography: Derrek Burbridge Lighting: Robert Eubanks Above the Box is a paradigm shift for both street dancers and the audience. It was prepared to challenge the dancers and audience to think about street dance beyond “outside the box” and re-imagine street dance where the box (or the bounds of street tradition) can be dispensed with altogether, with a freedom to be expressive in new ways.

FRACTURED GLASS World Premiere Choreography: Victoria Morgan Music: 2Cellos Songs: Smooth Criminal, Welcome to the Jungle, With or Without You Lighting: Robert Eubanks Costume Design: Diana Adams and Cincinnati Ballet Costume Shop The Kaplan New Works Series has come to represent not only original ideas in movement, but also the physical expression of new and unique voices. Most recently, for Cincinnati Ballet, this has meant a focus on female choreographers. Ironically in a field that’s predominantly feminine, there is a surprising lack of female creative leadership. Fractured Glass, is inspired by those who are working to break glass ceilings wherever they might encounter them in hopes of providing a seat at the table for all who endeavor to be there.

I dedicate this ballet to a female hero in my life, the late Blanche Maier, a supporter, an instigator and a peacemaker.

Her commitment to experimental work from a classical base makes her a unique voice in the San Fransisco area. As Rita Felciano wrote in the Guardian, “She quite possibly is the Bay Area’s most original dance thinker, taking what some consider a dead language and using it as a 21st century lingo to tell us something about who we are.” She was named one of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine, a “Hot 20 under 40” by 7x7, was honored with a “Goldie” award from the Guardian, and twice her choreography has been listed in the “Top 10” dance events of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle. Future projects include premieres with San Jose and Kansas City Ballets. She is honored to be the Choreographer in Residence for Smuin Ballet and an Artist in Residence at ODC Theater.

He earned master’s degrees in piano performance and arts administration from Indiana University. Küchle is one of the last protégés of the late Maestro Erich Kunzel, who engaged him for appearances as guest piano soloist with the Southwest Florida Symphony. Recent engagements as a concerto soloist include the Kentucky Symphony and Ensemble Vita. Küchle particularly cherishes his experiences as a chamber music partner with members of the CSO and Concert Nova. His appearances as a vocal accompanist have taken him across the U.S. and to Germany, Canada, and London. This winter he will accompany soprano Alexandra Schoeny in concert in Berlin, and also record another CD.

PRINCIPAL DANCERS CERVILIO MIGUEL AMADOR

Hometown: Camagüey, Cuba | Joined Cincinnati Ballet: 2004 “I didn’t want to be a dancer,” says Amador, now in his eleventh year as Principal Dancer at Cincinnati Ballet. Initially athletic and interested in playing the saxophone, Amador’s parents gently nudged him towards ballet at the age of nine, and he’s been hooked ever since. “It’s one of those things that is so hard, and you wake up in the morning and your body basically doesn’t want to move because it’s so tired and it’s so sore and in so much pain, but you go, and you do it, and after you do it, the next day you just love it again. I love it. It’s like an addiction. It’s a really hard career, but it becomes this passion, this addiction. You just need it.”

FUN FACT: “I have lived in Cincinnati longer than any other city. I love the Reds, playing poker, dancing salsa and Cincinnati Ballet!”

SARAH HAIRSTON

Hometown: Charleston, South Carolina | Joined Cincinnati Ballet: 2001

Top: Cervilio Miguel Amador, King Arthur’s Camelot. Bottom: Sarah Hairston, Chasing Squirrel. Photography: Peter Mueller

After seeing a Broadway production of Cats as a child, Hairston was hooked. “Unfortunately I cannot sing, so classical ballet seemed to be a better route to take!” she says. Hairston trained at Calvert Brodie School of Dance under Ann Brodie, North Carolina School of the Arts and Boston Ballet, where she danced professionally before joining Cincinnati Ballet. Hairston faced her share of adversity since joining Cincinnati Ballet, overcoming two grueling knee injuries in three years. “It was a struggle to come back both times,” she says. “However, I realized that if I believed in myself, that was all that mattered.” Hairston also credits her students at Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy with immense emotional support and inspiration. When she isn’t dancing, Hairston loves spending time with her Pomeranian Sheltie, Dakota. You can follow their adventures on Instagram: @sarahanddakota.

FUN FACT: Sarah didn’t have any hair until she was two, and as a result, her family used to call her E.T.!

He danced with ENB until 2008 when he joined The Australian Ballet as a Principal Artist, where he remained until April 2013. Ramos is greatly looking forward to his first year with Cincinnati Ballet during the 2014-2015 Season.

FUN FACT: Yosvani has his own YouTube channel: Yosvani Ramos

janessa touchet

Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana | Joined Cincinnati Ballet: 2001 Touchet will never forget her 19th birthday. That was the day Victoria Morgan came to Pacific Northwest Ballet, to audition Touchet’s professional division. “Directors from everywhere auditioned us, but nobody ever picked me,” she says. “I remember thinking she wouldn’t like me anyway, so I told myself to just have fun, and after it was over, she said, ‘I’d like to talk to Janessa.’ I was meant to be here. I started as an Apprentice and moved all the way through the ranks. I had always had my heart and mind set on Cincinnati Ballet.” Prior to joining Cincinnati Ballet, Touchet trained with the Delta Festival Ballet under the direction of Joseph Giacobbe, Giacobbe Academy of Dance, Hartford Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Top: Yosvani Ramos. Photo provided. Bottom: Janessa Touchet, Hummingbird in a Box. Photography: Peter Mueller

FUN FACT: Janessa twirled baton until she was nine. Her talent was used in King Arthur’s Camelot. Just after King Arthur and Guinevere are married, Guinevere twirls a rose in the air while dancing.

INTRODUCING NAOMI HERGOTT

“I started dancing when I was three,” says Hergott. “My mom took me to a summer ballet camp and I fell in love with it the first day.” Hergott is from Augusta, Georgia, where she trained with Ron Jones and Jessica Bailey. At 15, she moved to Atlanta to train with Maniya Barredo and Andrea Pell. Hergott attended summer programs with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Kaatsbaan, Chautauqua, and Houston Ballet, danced with Philippine Ballet Theatre in Manila over the summer of 2011, and danced with Colorado Ballet’s studio company for two years. She most enjoyed Cincinnati Ballet’s production of Swan Lake during the 2013-2014 Season and is looking forward to learning and growing even more as a CBII during the 2014-2015 Season. “Ballet allows us to express ourselves in a way that day-to-day life does not,” says Hergott.
