Our Message

D

ear CBN Partner, As many of you reading this will know, CBN SA recently hosted Partner Appreciation breakfasts in Durban and Johannesburg (the one in Cape Town will be happening soon, in September!). I cannot overstate how encouraging it has been for me to meet so many of you face to face, hear some of your stories, and to realise how many of you pray regularly for us and the numerous projects and ministries in which CBN SA is involved. I am so grateful for those God has given me to work alongside in this amazing ministry: my fantastic CBNSA team and volunteers who make amazing things happen each day, my CBN colleagues all around the world – and of course you and the 300 other CBN SA partners who make it all possible. Our collective Commission as followers of Jesus couldn’t be more compelling or important - to allow God to use us in His mission to redeem this beautiful, but broken world. Since the Garden, what has been formed by God has been and is being deformed by sin. We can see this deformation all too easily as we look around us, and inside us. His call is to join Him in reformation - in politics,

family, media, culture, and every soul across every kilometer of this planet. It is not to happen through self-righteousness, by distancing ourselves and waving religious, judgmental fingers. It is going to happen through the attractive vitality of our relationship with God and a constant seasoning of authentic, sacrificial love. We are called to share His lifechanging Amazing Grace as creatively, practically and lovingly as we can. To help turn ordinary men, women and children into followers of the Way, Truth and Life using whatever time, opportunities and resources we have at our disposal. Wow, pretty daunting… until we remind ourselves that He doesn’t rely on our ability, only our availability. Mostly, we just need to say “YES”, allow Him to fill us and then hold on for the ride. What a Great Commission this is!

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…

- Hebrews 10:24

Grace, peace and His goodness to you and your family as you continue the race... Ian Walton Regional Director, CBN Southern Africa

ometimes, as a team, we take a moment to sit back and relish in the work we’re able to do through God’s grace and purpose for His children. The humanitarian work we’re able to do, the lives we reach, the children we interact with… It’s all possible because God laid the conviction to support CBN on your heart – our beloved partners. Half of 2019 has passed and in just 6 short months, we’ve come such a long way and it has been a blessing to have shared that with you. We hosted our annual partner events in Johannesburg and Durban at the end of May and beginning of July (don’t worry Cape Town – we’re coming for you!). As we were preparing, we could feel God changing and stirring our hearts. Preparing CBN for something new. And how He has come through! We would like to thank each and every one of our partners, whether you were at the event or not. CBN is able to help people with their physical needs while simultaneously reaching them with God’s truth and love. There really is no greater privilege and we’re in awe of your generous hearts. For those at the events, thank you for taking the Johannesburg Event - Hosted by Cornerstone Church on the 1st of June 2019

Happy Women’s Day!

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. Proverbs 31:25

A Virtuous Woman Who Can Find Written by Enih Sone

can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. | Who Proverbs 31:10 (KJV) When the bible says who can find? It means it is rare to find this precious woman. She has been priced high by Lord. Woman you have been priced high by the Lord. The Lord is in search for this precious woman. To him she is more precious than gold or silver or fine pearls. There are very few of them. God made us precious women. We are the best thing that ever happened to Mankind. After he made man and said all was good, then he realised it was not good for man to be alone. My understanding of this goes beyond marriage as not all woman are married but all are women. He was indirectly saying that it is not good for Mankind to be without a woman whether married or single. Woman, you were made to be a blessing to your family, community, province, nation and the world. Wherever you go, mankind benefits from your presence. It is not good for the world to be without a virtuous woman. God did not make a mistake to make you. A virtuous woman does not seek to be priced by the world; she seeks to be priced by the Lord Almighty at all times. She does not seek to be affirmed by anyone else. She understands that worldly values, accolades, beauty, etc., fades away but the pearls of God in her last for eternity. We lose our virtuousness when we

give in to the enemy’s seduction. He makes us common. Anything that is common can be easily found. It is cheap, it is used without care and thrown away without regret. Don’t allow the devil to make you cheap. Do not put your gold ring on your life on a “pig’s” nose, it does not understand your value. • Have you lost your divine virtue because of sin? Gal 5.19-21. • Are you on a path far from the path of virtuousness? • What choices have you made that has stripped you of your divine worth? • What has Satan seduced you into that is less than God’s standard for you? All is not lost. You can be virtuous again. There is redemption in Jesus Christ. Today, God is raising up virtuous Kingdom women who will arise and shine in the glory of the Father’s beauty, who will not live a lowered standard. Make God’s standard your standard and be virtuous again. Let the world be glad you existed generations after you are gone. Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Proverbs 31.29NIV Set yourself to surpass the noble things the women behind you did. Go for it, bless the world. It awaits your manifestation. Happy Virtuous Women’s Day.

Mary Magdalene A Story about Value Written by Nic Barker

But she realized that some thing greater was present, and that it couldn’t

M

ost Christians know of Mary Magdalene - and no this was not Jesus’ mother, wife or sister - but one of the dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ. Mary had a brother named Lazarous, whom Jesus raised from the dead, and a sister Martha. The family were wholehearted followers and Jesus would stay at their house when he was in town. One story relays how Jesus was teaching in the home of Mary and Martha. Perhaps it was a sunny Sunday afternoon, and they had just finished eating a lovely roasted leg of lamb with some unleavened bread and they were waiting for desert and afternoon tea to be fixed. Jesus decided to share the Word as he usually did. All the men moved into the lounge to settle in under the authority of their teacher. An interesting thing happened

| 8

though, as everyone moved into the lounge to settle in, there was Mary sitting right by the feet of Jesus, ready to soak up his words of life. This was odd because surely she should’ve been helping her sister Martha in the kitchen with the desert and tea? After all, this was their house and they were the hosts - not to mention that she was a woman! But no one said anything, they were all much more concerned with Jesus and hearing what he had to say. Just then, a clambering was heard from the kitchen, Martha under the stress of trying to prepare the tea and desert appeared in the doorway and looked at Mary and Jesus and exclaimed, “Lord, I’m busy here trying to prepare a tasty desert, I have the water boiling for the tea, while Mary is just sitting there, tell her to come and help

me!”. Everyone was surprised at his answer, “Martha, you are stressed about something that is actually not that important, Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her”. Mary was chuffed, Martha… not so much. Fast forward a short period of time and Lazarous was recently raised from the dead, the whole town was still buzzing about this miracle. Mary and Martha were both in awe and wonder at the goodness of God. One particular night, Jesus was invited to dinner at one of the priest’s homes. Before supper, as they were chatting about the Law and the sabbath, they heard a knock at the door. There stood Mary, her eyes filled with tears holding something dear, close to her bosom. You see, in the days after Lazarous’ resurrection Mary had been so in awe, so thankful, so overwhelmed by the love and kindness of God that she considered how she could express her appreciation and gratitude. Until finally an idea came to her, and she knew she needed to do it there and then. This moment arrived and Mary walked into the priest’s home and went straight to Jesus. In her hands she was holding a jar of very expensive perfume, which was worth at least a year’s salary. She stood behind Jesus and gently poured the entire jar onto his head, anointing him. Immediately some of the priests looked at each other and whispered, “did she really need to use the whole jar? It’s worth at least a year’s salary, if it was sold the money

could’ve been given to the poor”. Jesus overheard their comments and explained that the poor would always be with them, but they would not always have him. This act of worship was her expression of thanks and gratitude to Christ for all he had done for her and her family. So what’s the point of these two stories? Mary understood value. She understood priorities. That day when Jesus come around for Sunday lunch and she decided to sit at his feet, Mary knew full well the roles, responsibilities and tasks that were before her. But she realized that some thing greater was present, and that it couldn’t missed. She was not preoccupied with what others may have thought, or the fact that she might not have received desert, she determined in her heart to hear the words of Christ. Likewise, that night at the priest’s house, brimming with thankfulness and gratitude, she knew she wasn’t invited, she knew it would just be men in the room, she even knew full well the cost of the perfume, but that didn’t deter her. She decided in her heart that this was the best way to show her gratitude to her King, for all he had done for her and her family. She understood the value, and the importance of the one to whom she would express her love. I want to encourage and challenge you today, what do you value, what’s important to you? Are you a Mary, a Martha, or are you one of the priests?

Modern Day Womanhood

W

Written by Meagan Taylor

omen are created in the image of God as it states in Genesis 1. The creator of the universe made us like him - that means that every woman is a potential queen from heaven because she is created in the Imago Dei. We, as women, are special (just like men). Yes, we are distinct and valuable in our own way compared to men but we both reflect the human nature of God himself. Adam rejoiced at the creation of Eve. He celebrated and recognised her as his partner, a complement, distinct from any other created being that God made. Woman is uniquely formed as a gift for man — and man as a gift for woman. With this in mind, we as women have been placed in a unique role to bring God honour. Proverbs 31:10 says ‘Who can find a confident, kind-hearted virtuous woman? For her price is far above anything this world can offer’. In fact, Proverbs 31 gives us a great understanding about womanhood and what that looks like in today’s culture that is so anti-godly womanhood. The world has created its own set of ideals as to what womanhood looks like. It’s focused on the outward appearance rather then the inner beauty that reflects the likeness of God. It’s this inner beauty that we all behold that can change the world, bring hope, love and peace into our homes and ultimately our societies. It’s this inner likeness of God that’s missing and we must fight to make godly womanhood a priority. What does this inner beauty look like? It means that we woman ought to be kind-hearted, showing His love through service to our husbands, children and

| 12

communities. We are to learn how to use time wisely, work well with money and make raising up Godly children a priority. It means managing the affairs of our household with a happy and grateful heart as well as multiplying what life gives so that its enough for the family and practicing good stewardship of resources. We as woman, also need to rise and have a strong voice to speak up for injustices within our community and serve with love and respect. It is equally important for woman not to be overcome by the fast-paced life that we now live in due to the expectations that come from studying, working, marriage and raising children. Most importantly a godly woman takes time for prayer, meditation, worship and self-care, enjoying hobbies that enrich her life. When life gets you overwhelmed… Stop feeling like you’re not good enough by understanding you have been handpicked by the God of the universe to help carry out His plans. Break free from the traps of comparison and envy by embracing the beautiful, unique gifts the Lord has placed specifically inside of you. Overcome the lie that you are disqualified by your past as you discover how God can use even your worst mistakes for great impact. Live and enjoy the abundant life of freedom that Christ gave you when he died for you on the cross And remember that… “Your price is far above anything this world can offer…” Thank you to all the Proverbs 31 women who are friends and partners of CBN. We bless you this Woman’s Day in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

CBN Southern Africa is very proud to announce that we will be launching a Disaster Relief Fund! Humanitarian Update By Nic Barker

E

arlier this year we did a trip to Malawi. The purpose of the trip was twofold; one was to explore broadcasting opportunities and two, explore clean water project opportunities. What we didn’t expect though was an opportunity to potentially do a life changing surgery (LCS). On our last day in Blantyre we visited a children’s home called Kondanani. They do phenomenal work, and as we were chatting with the team, they started telling us about Job, a 16-year-old boy who became deaf and dumb at a very young age. Despite being deaf and dumb he still progressed through school and is only 3 years behind normal schooling level (which is impressive). Through the years they took him to specialists to see if hearing aids could be applied, but each time they came back to say he is totally deaf. Recently, however, someone noticed him responding to sounds. Again, they took him in to be tested and miraculously something changed. He is now able to hear faint sounds indicating that a hearing aid can work. Our office is going to apply for funding for the

LCS, and if all goes well I think this could be a stunning story of provision. On the same trip I had a strategic meeting with some wonderful people about wells in and around Malawi. The meeting was with the national Director of Water for People Malawi, an evangelism coordinator for their church, the pastor and a couple of laypeople. The meeting was encouraging because all present are experienced in both Water Wells and evangelism. They all have a heart to see the needy get the basic need of water, as well as the even greater need of hearing the Gospel. We are currently in the process of completing the first Grant Application which we hope to submit to the US for

approval soon. Lastly, our ministry partner Living Hope have recently acquired a new property in the Eastern Cape where they will be starting health ministries and various other ministries to serve the needy in the community. We have agreed to investigate doing a well on their land as it is in a very rural part of the country. It will be the first CBN well in SA which is very exciting and will be a huge blessing alongside Living Hope’s work.

If you would like to be a part of changing the lives of people like Job’s, prayerfully consider joining us in partnership so that we can continue being the hands and feet of Jesus and help change lives!

Communities Raising Up Children As the African proverb says “It takes a village to raise a child.” Each CBN SA team member has taken on the responsibility to partake in the Fikelela Holiday Club from the 1st to the 5th of July in different communities around Cape Town. Each one had a role to play in being the hands and feet of Jesus, their nurturing compassion definitely comes naturally as both male and female team member have expressed the Father heart of God in one way or another. We are certainly blessed with men and women after God’s own heart. Since our partners events in June we have received various enquiries about Superbook and its elements. Many enquiries have been answers to our prayers, that is not only limited to Superbook clubs, but schools and churches too. We know there is an appointed time for things to get birthed. Superbook has seen sprouts of seeds that has been sown over the last months and we are now starting to see the blossoming of new life and exciting projects. Doors have been opening for us to train and equip new facilitators, host Superbook events, and screen more episodes within communities. We were also invited to observe our existing Superbook Clubs,

| 18

run by Champions, as well. To name a few events: Orphan Care Foundation Afternoon Club in Westlake, Westlake United Trust Youth Day Event hosted by the Department of Health, Rehoboth Community Life Centre in Mitchell’s Plain, Rocklands Holiday Club hosted by the City of Cape Town, Fikelela Holiday Club in 6 different Communities and the Ignite Conference in Tygervalley (19 July 2019). Every Facilitator and Champion has truly been owning their clubs and making every effort to invite new children and obtain resources. We are grateful to have godly Champions who have shown great leadership. They are making great impact in the lives of the children in their care. The Superbook episodes have definitely sparked conversation and room for instilling values and spiritual development in their lives. Its heartwarming to see the joy and excitement when the Superbook Champions give feedback and share their experiences. Our prayer is that we will continue to: “…grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be Glory both now and forever! Amen.”- 2 Peter 3:18.

Superbook Testimony Royce Royce is a 14-year-old girl doing Grade 9 and lives with her single mother. Life has not been easy for her and she’s had a lot of peer pressure from friends that have influenced her into rebellious behavior. This has affected her school performance and it started taking its toll on her. One day she was invited to attend a Superbook screening and the episode shown on that particular day was “HE IS RISEN.” It ended up being a turning point in her life. “The part of the story which made an impact on me was the obedience Jesus displayed towards His Father in heaven. I have learnt to be humble and obedient towards my mother and no longer spend time with friends who have bad intentions. I spend time working hard at school and concentrate on my studies. In my spare time I do help my mother with house chores. With this, my life has changed for the better and my old friends admire the new Royce I ‘am’. Thank you CBN and its ministry partners for changing my life!”

Q&A Q with Pat

In the Bible, when Jesus shared the parable of the talents, is it safe to assume that the third servant -mentioned in the parable - was a person who professed faith but didn’t truly possess faith?

A

When you’re reading a parable, it’s meant to teach one truth. And the parable in Matthew 25:14 stated that these servants were given talents.

Pat Robertson Founder of The Christian Broadcasting Network Do you have a question for Pat? Log on to cbn.com/ bringitonline and follow the instructions to sumbit your questions.

A talent was a particular type of currency. And one servant was given five talents, another servant was given two talents, and the third servant was given one talent. Here’s the important thing. The servant with five talents and the servant with two talents used their respective talents. This demonstrated the law of use, which is this: if you use what’s given to you, you will receive more. And if you do not use what’s given to you, you will lose whatever you have. That’s the essence of this parable. And if you take what’s been given to you and you bury it in the ground like the third servant - you’re going to lose it.
