OUR MESSAGE | Dear CBN Partner As I write to you, Cyclone Kenneth is wreaking havoc in Northern Mozambique, just 2 weeks after Idai hit the same country causing loss of life and livelihood. Our own country is still reeling from the damage and huge death toll caused by flooding across KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape. Simultaneously, large areas of Southern Africa are facing a very serious and prolonged drought crisis. And this is just in our part of the world! All across the globe people are experiencing the loss and tragedy associated with these “Natural Disasters” - or what insurers conveniently call “Acts of God”. How do we make sense of these destructive occurrences? Are they some kind of consequence of humankind’s turning from God? Are they physical expressions of our fallen, broken world that God has yet to fully redeem? Or are they just natural phenomena that aren’t intrinsically bad, but unfortunately, cause massive devastation due to the overpopulation and inequality on our planet today? How ever you have come to reconcile this as a believer, there is one thing we should all be absolutely certain about: God does not leave people to suffer alone. He is “God with us” through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Ian Walton

CBN Southern Africa Regional Director “In this world you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NLT).

This means that the Spirit of Jesus continues to come alongside those affected by disaster and calamity today – directly but also indirectly through His people. Medical professionals, disaster relief organisations, charities and brave local heroes are His very ‘hands and feet’ in rescuing and helping those affected on the ground. But all of us have a part to play. It is easy to feel powerless and become compassion-weary at times with the sheer magnitude and frequency of these events. But our prayers and our generosity do really make a difference. In the wake of all of these recent local events, CBN South Africa has decided to set up a special Disaster Response Fund. I want to boldly ask you to consider donating to this fund specifically. You can do this by depositing into the CBN South Africa account using the reference “DISASTERS.” You have my assurance that every rand donated in this way will be spent on strategic disaster relief efforts as the need arises within our region, or sent directly to sustainable, Godly local disaster relief organisations and missions with which we work closely. To chat more about exactly how our Disaster Response Fund will be used, contact Nic or myself at our office – we’d love to share our plans with you! Whether we feel compelled and able to give towards disaster relief or not, let us commit to praying whenever disaster strikes, particularly in our part of the world. Pray that survivors would be found. Pray that food and aid would arrive quickly. Pray that homes, families and communities would be restored. Most of all, pray that each person affected would come to know the real “Acts of God” as they set about rebuilding their lives - His love, His comfort and His amazing grace.

A little bit of help goes a long way! “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” - Edward Everett Hale The above quote is true in so many ways. We need to stand in the gap and be prepared to help others even if it looks like it will only make a small difference. As we approach the middle of the year, it’s incredible to witness how much our continent has changed in such a short period of time. In Mozambique alone thousands of people have been displaced and find themselves in terrible situations after two deadly cyclones raged havoc causing death, flooding, disease and total despair. Many of these people are now living in makeshift homes with very few

Meagan Taylor | Partnership & Sustainability Manager belongings and are seeking to create a new future, no matter how uncertain, after losing almost everything. The cyclone also affected neighbouring countries Zimbabwe and Malawi. The after-effects of the flooding left many homeless. When the cyclone hit, CBN in partnership with CityHope and Operation Blessing, were on the ground within a few days providing much needed supplies, essentials and food aid in the different affected countries. About a month after cyclone Idai hit, disaster struck again. Cyclone Kenneth hit northern Mozambique and Malawi. These are indeed challenging times

and there is no shortage of need here in Africa. Many people are experiencing overwhelming circumstances due to poverty. Thanks to the generosity of our CBN SA partners, we are able to have funds available as soon as disaster strikes. We continue to ask for your support so that we can continue to be the hands and feet of the body of Christ to those in desperate need. We frequently have the privilege of hearing stories of gratitude from those whom we have been able to help. And that is all thanks to your partnership. On behalf of CBN SA, may I take this opportunity to thank you, our donors, for allowing us to make this possible. As the second half of the year approaches, none of us know what the future may hold. Our commitment, however, as CBN SA is to continue to make a difference. Whether that means digging a well, providing support for those affected by a disaster or helping orphans and at children at risk, we know that we couldn’t do it without you!

Thank you for your generosity, prayers and support!

WHAT IS HUMAN TRAFFICKING? Occurences of human trafficking, particularly amongst young girls, have been increasing globally.

- A person has to be delivered, recruited, transported, transferred, harboured, sold, exchanged or leased within or across the borders of South Africa. - There has to be a threat or use of force, coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power or vulnerability, or payments or benefits to a person in control of the victim. - The victim has to be trafficked for the purpose of exploitation, which includes sexual exploitation, servitude, forced labour, child labour or the removal of body parts.

ORPHAN’S PROMISE |

A Beautiful New Chapter: A Life Made Beautiful After a Devastating Trafficking Experience It was a bitter-sweet moment for the BDS Shelter Staff and trafficking survivors to bid farewell to one of our overcoming survivors who had been in the Beautiful Dream Society Anti-Trafficking Shelter for close to two years. Aggie, as she was known to everyone, was referred to the Shelter after enduring a horrible 5 months in South Africa. She was imprisoned in trafficking for the totality of that time before she was able to escape. She was helped with the slow, painful (but in the end) successful process of healing in the BDS AntiTrafficking Shelter. As a part of her healing journey she started going to school again last year; while still in the BDS Shelter Transition Programme. After growing stronger, she exited the shelter at the beginning of this year and moved to a school in her hometown where she will be continuing with her studies and working on her dream of becoming a social worker. When speaking about the BDS Shelter,

Aggie said that one of the biggest lessons she learnt from being in the Shelter was that there are people who can fiercely love you even though you are not related by blood. She said she had seen this in how the Shelter Staff and BDS Staff have consistently loved her and were there for her when she was so difficult to interact with because she was hurting. She also expressed great gratitude toward BDS for helping her have a chance at achieving her dreams again. Thanks to our CBN partners, Agnes will still be supported as a non-residential client by BDS for another school year and will stay with her extended family during the holidays. Do you want to help more individuals like Aggie? You can donate now by EFT, online via our website, or by using the Zapper code below.

Superbook Highlights Screenings, Events and Clubs Superbook Screening and Events

We had 3 special events happening in the month of March which saw us reach a total of 372 children. Areas we got to target are Valhalla Park, Westlake and Nyanga. The event that stands out is the one where we received an invitation from the South African Police Crime Unit in Nyanga to facilitate an hour session targeted at children who are seen as being at risk to do crime. The purpose of the session was to encourage these young children to not see crime as the only solution to their survival and poverty-stricken situations. Our role there as the Superbook team was to strengthen the children’s spiritual well- being and resilience. The episode we chose to show was that of Daniel and the lion’s den. The key learning point we tried to drive home was that God gives courage to do the right thing and make good decisions to those who seek Him. We are looking forward to working more with the SAPC Unit in Nyanga to reach more at-risk youth with Superbook.

Superbook Club

We will be starting our fist Superbook Club in May with Clever Kids Homework Center. This is an NPO that runs an after school programme with children in the Masiphumelele area. We are very excited about this development as it will allow us to track children’s spiritual development as they partake in our Superbook programme which is something we are not able to do with once off events.

RoepTV church outreach partnership

We have partnered with RoepTV to celebrate and create awareness of Superbook Season One being screened on their SOVD channel. We have been visiting and ministering to a couple of churches during the month of April and will continue in May and June. This is an exciting partnership which will see us reach more children and churches alike at a grass roots level.

Upcoming Events and Activations > Gizmo visits churches in partnership with RoepTV dates confirmed include: Friday 17 May – Mosselbay AFM church > Showcasing Superbook at the Association of Christian Media Annual Conference on the 15-17th of May. > Superbook screenings in partnership with Fikelela Aids Project will be taking place on the 1st -5th July

The Gift that Brings Glory to God Dear Partners It is with much appreciation and great joy that I write this to encourage you as you invest into the Kingdom of God, through your giving, to advance it in preparation for the coming of Christ! It is in this appreciation that I am reminded of King Solomon’s wisdom, the queen of Sheba’s awe of it and how we can use this story as an analogy to contribute to and witness the glory of God.

“When the queen of Sheba heard of Solomon’s fame, which brought honour to the name of the Lord, she came …” 1 Kings 10:1 (NLT) The queen of Sheba visited King Solomon and scripture says she came to see the fame of Solomon that was bringing glory to God. How did Solomon get this fame? It was a gift from God! God gave him so much wisdom that made him wiser than all the other kings in his time. It was a gift and he used it to bring glory to God. Others came to see that fame and praised Solomon’s God. The queen of Sheba said; “Praise the Lord your God, who delights in you and has placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king so you can rule with justice and righteousness.” 1 Kings 10:9

| 12

Precious partners, your contributions to CBN could be likened to the gift of wisdom Solomon received from God. Your contributions have increased the awareness of the ministry of CBN South Africa (Solomon’s fame increased), which now ministers to those who reach out to us (queen of Sheba came to see), as well as many we reach out to through our various projects (Solomon gave gifts to the queen of Sheba). We assure you that your gift is bringing glory to God! Many are being blessed, lives are being changed and the Kingdom of God is advancing as we put your gift to use here at CBN Africa. Thank you for bringing glory to God through your gifts to CBN South Africa!! Be blessed, Enih Sone | Finance Manager

The Blessing of Giving Loving others by blessing them with time, resources and prayers. It is such a blessing to give, whether you are giving in the form of your time, resources or prayers. There is more joy and fulfilment in giving than receiving and indeed blessed is the hand that gives than the one that receives. In Luke 6: 38 the Bible says “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back”. As Christians, we are called to love one another, and what better way to show love to one another than to bless each other with our time, resources and prayers. John 15:12 says: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you”. I have had the privilege and honour to see the work of God being fulfilled through CBN’s different projects. I have seen the essence of CBN being the hands and feet of Jesus through the generous giving of CBN’s partners. The

generous giving of the partners has enabled CBN to be a blessing by caring for orphans, building wells, and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ in young children. I encourage partners to continue to be a blessing through their generous giving, support and prayers. We bless you for your faithful giving and pray that you experience the blessing of giving in abundance! You can donate now by EFT, online via our website, or by using the Zapper code below.

What do you see? Through what lens do you see yourself?

|

FEATURE You stand before a mirror every day, don’t you? When you look in, what do you see? Do you see an amazing person or a disappointment? Flaws or strengths? Brokenness or wholeness? Many times, we are tempted to judge ourselves by the same measures society judge us by. We see ourselves through the same lenses that others see us through. I remember one day my sister was in the kitchen. Her son, about 3 years old at the time, was with her. He was playing with the covers of some disposable plates. She stood there busy as a bee, completely ignoring him. He just stayed there with his imagination, saying all sorts of things. Next thing, he screamed: “RED!” “The light is red”, he continued. His mother, who had been keen on teaching him his colours at the time felt the need to reply. “It’s white, Champ. White. Not red”, she replied without even turning back to look at him. “No, mummy. It’s red…” He replied sharply. My sister, wondering at her son’s refusal to take a simple correction knew it was time to put the foot down. She turned around to give him that stern look when she saw something interesting. Nathaniel had been looking at the light through a transparent red plate cover!

|

That day I learned something interesting: how you see what you see is as a result of what you are looking through. Do you see that challenge or situation through the eyes of faith rooted in the truth (the word of God) or are you seeing it through your natural eyes rooted in the facts/ lies of the devil? The truth which is God’s word is superior to any fact. The fact says you are sick but the truth says by His (Jesus) stripes you were healed. The fact says you are poor/broke but the truth says Jesus was made poor that you might be rich. The fact says you are single but the truth says none shall lack their mate. Whose report would you believe? Begin to look at that situation through the eyes of faith founded in the truth. Stand in the truth steadfastly until the fact/lies of the devil give way because the truth always wins when you don’t give up. Today, I decree that that frustrating, embarrassing and bad situation in your life is giving way now as you stand in the truth in Jesus name. Your victory is sure! We have a Prayer/Counseling Center with dedicated staff who would be more than willing to talk and agree with you in prayers for whatever you’re believing God for. Contact us on: +27 71 763 3810

| TESTIMONIES

Testimonies from South Africa Below Nic Barker shares a quick testimony which came out of one of CBN South Africa’s projects & partners. Like many others from the Cape Flats, Michael (name changed) was born into tough circumstances. He never met his father and his mom was unfit to take care of him at the time, so he ended up going to live with his grandmother in an informal settlement on the outskirts of Strandfontein. Although incredibly bright, he was in and out of school, rebellious and troublesome. He soon joined a local gang to meet his need for acceptance, love, and respect. What was once in and out of school, progressed to in and out of prison and this behaviour continued for more than 10 years. Eventually he started using the drugs that he had formerly pushed, and this put him on a fast track to destruction. The addiction caused him to make numerous bad decisions, which resulted in strained relationships and disputes. At the time he was living with his girlfriend and their young son. She pleaded with him to fight his addiction, but he chose not to. She left with his only son and he hit rock bottom. Dodging bullets, alluding death, and avoiding debts which called for his life, he sold everything he had in order to support his drug habit. He even sold the roof sheets on his dwelling, until all he had was the clothes on his back, some cardboard and a mattress in a dark

| 16

corner. Here he knew that if he didn’t make a change he would surely die. At this time, he decided to reach out to HOSA (Hope Southern Africa) which does work in and around the communities of the Cape Flats, and more specifically, the community in which he grew up. He made known his need for help, and they gladly accepted him. But they also explained that commitment was needed from his side. And commit he did. He attended all the meetings faithfully in their men’s programme. After graduating from their programme, he was sent by HOSA to the Ark Rehabilitation Centre, and it was there that his decision to change was met with power to stand as he accepted Jesus’ love and forgiveness. Today Michael is almost two years sober, and giving himself fully to any course, programme or work his hands find. This year he is interning at an aquaponics garden that HOSA runs in Strandfontein, which CBN built as result of generous donations. We honour HOSA for their faithfulness and the work they do in and around the Cape Flats. And we praise God for this story of hope and overcoming!

HUMANITARIAN |

Following Jesus Putting it into Practice Finding abundance in obedience and trials. The Lord has been speaking to be lately about the parable of the wise and foolish builders, as seen in Matthew 7. The gist of the parable is that those who put Jesus’ words into action are the ones who can withstand the storm. Those who don’t practice what Jesus says, gets swept away with the trials and challenges that comes with life. I’m reminded that we don’t just follow Jesus in theory, but in practice. As David Pawson put it, referring to himself:

“I’m a practicing Christian, just like a doctor or dentist I need to daily practice anew the teachings of Christ”. In doing so, we also experience the joy, wonder, glory and power of the Christian life. Having tasted and seen, we resolve in our hearts to not follow any other way. As the disciples discovered, we also see that Jesus alone has the words of life, and in the practicing thereof, we find life in abundance (John 10:10). This is very much our heart in the humanitarian department, and we are

thankful for all opportunities to serve. This last month has seen a few natural disasters affect our Southern African region. This includes: flooding to Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe; unprecedented rainfall in KZN - resulting in landslides, homes destroyed and many deaths; a cyclone which hit the coast of Mozambique; and now more recently, cyclone Kenneth hit Northern Mozambique and Tanzania. We were privileged in that we were able to respond to the flooding with food aid, and that we have had a part to play in relief to KZN, but we are trusting the Lord to be able to serve in Mozambique. In light of these disasters it’s our hope to create a Disaster Relief Fund for times such as these. Disasters cannot be pre-planned, and they always require rapid response. We want to position ourselves to be able to affectively respond, and to do so quickly. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please don’t hesitate to contact me on: nic.barker@cbnsa.org

A Message to Mothers A message of encouragement, faith and gratitude to all women and mothers from the CBN Team.

Arise Mothers. Every woman is called to be a mother, they just need to find out where they are called to do it. God is calling you to take your place and authority. Arise Mothers and nurture, counsel, comfort, teach, discern, pray. Protect children, the elderly, communities and nations. God is wanting to expand His Kingdom. Arise, focus on God and allow Him to use you in this season. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers who have borne children, those precious gifts God has given you. Hannah realised this and she gave her son to the Lord. This day the Lord is encouraging you to give back your children to Him, to allow Him to fulfil His purposes for your children, the gifts He had given you. But do not just be focused on your own children. Happy Mother’s Day to all who have not borne children. The Lord says your children will be more. Isaiah 54 - see beyond! God is encouraging you on this day to look to Him and He will show you children that need you. There is great fruitfulness and deep joy in this. Happy Mothers’ day to all who have mothered orphans. God is calling you to save children who have no one else. Be like Jehosheba who stole Joash from the sons of King who were being murdered by their grandmother (2 Kings: 1-3). Many children need to be saved from death and you are the one God is calling. Happy Mothers’ day to all called to mother communities. Deborah arose and brought salvation when village life ceased in Israel.

| 18

God is calling you to really see the children in your communities. (Judges 5) Happy Mother’s day to all who have mothered nations. Esther arose and was willing to die to save her nation. She fasted and prayed and sought the Lord for salvation. She used her position to intercede for the Jews. God is calling women in positions of influence to mother the children in the nations. Happy Mother’s Day to all called to mother the elderly. Ruth did not abandon her mother in law but she looked after her even in a land that was not hers. She gleaned in the fields all day so she could take care of her. She was a true companion to her ageing mother in law. She gave up everything and God rewarded her. We can mother children, the elderly, communities and nations firstly by praying for them. Ask for discernment. Understand God’s strategy for salvation of the beautiful people God has placed near you. Take charge. Train other mothers. Be involved in the schools and in the communities and nations. Be led by the Spirit. Today do not harden your heart as the Lord speaks to you. Arise and be a mother to someone who needs you now. God will release what is needed to those who will answer the call in this season.

ENCOURAGEMENT |

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, 17 giving thanks to God the Father | through him. Colossians 3: 15 - 17

Your questions, with honest answers by Pat Robertson

Q: I have two adult children who have strayed from God. I pray for them every day, but I’m wondering if I’m praying correctly. How can I pray for them effectively?

Pat Robertson

Founder of The Christian Broadcasting Network

Do you have a question for Pat? Log on to CBN. com/BringItOnline and follow the instructions to submit your question.

A: It’s important that you continuously praise God in advance and believe as a fact that they will come back to the faith. In the Old Testament, it was Samuel who said, “God forbid that I should sin by ceasing to pray for you.” In other words, you just keep on praying and keep on praising God even if you don’t see any changes. The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Therefore, if you raised your two children according to what God says in the Bible, when they grow older, they’ll come back to the Lord - as you hold on and stay faithful with your prayers for them. Don’t give up on them and don’t ever stop praying.
