OUR MESSAGE |

Dear Friend I have been re-reading Dr. Robertson’s biography “Shout it from the Housetops”. He gave me a signed copy when I first started at CBN just over 2 years ago, and it has become precious to me. One by one each person in our team is now reading it too, as well as my wife. Besides being a crucial ‘textbook’ for understanding the spiritual roots and heritage of CBN’s unique ministry, it is also a powerful story detailing a man’s authentic faith in action, rooted in a constantly growing vision and understanding of his purpose.

Ian Walton CBN Southern Africa Regional Director Don’t forget, we also love to pray with you - about anyone or anything. Give our prayerline a call on (021) 701 1776 or you can email prayer@cbnsa.org or WhatsApp +27 71 763 810

Pat Robertson’s ministry seems to have begun with a ‘Holy Discontent’ – a gnawing dissatisfaction with possessions, success and the ordinary life. As he responds to this and starts to move towards what he begins to recognize as God’s call, he prays prayers like this one: “Oh God, tell me what to do. I’m so inexperienced in Your ways. Lead me. Guide me.” And ‘guide Him,’ God certainly did. As you will probably recall, Pat’s burning desire to serve God was soon focused into starting a TV station which he had no money for, and knew nothing about. But as step of faith followed step of faith, he soon had the keys to a tiny defunct station and was depositing a first $3 partner contribution into the account, which he audaciously called “Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc.” Reflecting on Pat Robertson’s visionary leadership over the last 60 years reminded me of a story I once read about the construction of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Some workers on the building site were once asked independently, “Sir, what are you doing?” A few workers answered, “we’re cutting stones”! Others responded, “we’re earning a living”! But a few exceptional individuals said, “we’re building St. Paul’s Cathedral”! Pat Robertson was able to see beyond his daily challenges, failures and successes. The vision for CBN was not primarily based on what he saw or knew or had – it was based on what God saw, what God knew, what God had. He dedicated enough time with His Father and made enough intentional sacrifice to ensure that he started to see his unique potential and call the way that God did. “I knew these were not just desires, but actual prophetic longings which God had placed on my heart,” says a brave Pat Robertson. Leaders who strive to have a clear, God-size vision of what they are called to accomplish are always able to inspire others and leave a lasting legacy. This is true for Pat Robertson. I pray it will become true for you and for me too. Sincerely yours in Christ, Ian

Pathway To Victory Building Eternal Tabernacles for His Glory By Gordon Robertson, Chief Executive Officer

God’s desire is for everyone to be saved. That is why He has commanded us to go into all the world and preach the Good News. What can we do in the midst of the battle? First, we should rejoice— because the victory has already been won! This fuels our prayers and fixes our perspective. Why have we won? Jesus tells us, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). The greatness of the victory is determined by the depth of the struggle. God has called us to preach the Gospel to the world, and Satan knows his time is short. He is in the business of stealing people’s blessing and tricking them out of their destiny. The serpent told Adam and Eve that eating the forbidden fruit would make them like gods—when they should have realized, “We are already in the image of God. You are telling us to disobey Him.” In John 10:10, Jesus reveals the stark contrast between Satan’s mission and His own: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” To be victorious, we must put

on the whole armor of God, which is described by Paul in Ephesians 6:11-18 and concludes, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. Similarly, Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:1, “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men.” He is not just saying, “Pray for everyone.” He is saying, “You’ve got to have supplications. You’ve got to have prayers. You’ve got to have intercessions, along with giving thanks. Why? For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (vv. 3-4). God’s desire is for everyone to be saved. That is why He has commanded us to go into all the world and preach the Good News. And as Revelation 12:11 promises, we will overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. So, we give God thanks because that’s the pathway to victory—and we praise Him for the triumph to come. God bless you. Scripture is taken from the New King James Version. Th is teaching was given during a CBN staff chapel.

| PARTNERSHIP

An Evergreen Community An Evergreen plant has leaves that are green throughout the year. They are able to withstand the cold winters and scorching summers and yet throughout the year they remain consistently vibrant and green. God wants us to be ‘evergreen’ as a body of Christ. Despite the changing circumstances of life we need to remain anchored in Christ so that our lives can reflect the goodness of Christ no matter what comes our way. Practically that means our hearts, thoughts and actions will imitate the nature of God and whoever comes in contact with us (God’s children) will feel the outpouring love of God. Plants are a recurring symbol that represents spiritual growth and our relationship with Jesus throughout the Bible. The question is how do we keep ourselves from withering? The practical answer is to study the word of God and strive to pattern thoughts, actions, and intentions of the heart after His. Jeremiah 17:7-8 says; But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

Meagan Taylor | Partnership & Sustainability Manager The truth is that without sufficient sustenance and nourishment from the source the result inevitably is withering. We end up becoming more vulnerable to being dragged into negativity without an anchor to provide stability during the hard seasons of life. However if we are firmly entrenched in Him we can endure whatever comes our way. As a community of believers we need to encourage one another to be ‘evergreen’ and here at CBN SA we want to be your friend of encourgement. If you need someone to talk to then give us a call or if you need a bible or resources to build you up in our faith then let us know so that we can send them to you! Thank you for your partnership that helps CBN to bring the Love of God to millions of hurting people everyday. As a CBN partner you help to provide medical care, clean water, humanitarian aid and the message of the Gospel to those who need it most.

Update: Upcoming Humanitarian Projects SOUTH SUDAN A big highlight for me was getting approval for the South Sudan Disaster Relief Mission. Approval was given for us to be able to take up 20 tons of Future Life Formula Mix, in Partnership with City Hope. The budget includes for myself and a media person to cover the story effectively. Once there we will partner with CAPRO and ACROSS mission organisations to mobilize volunteers and distribute food while reaching out to people with the gospel where possible. I’m trusting that this will open up new doors to minister and serve the people of SS, and that this can be the first of many partnerships with City Hope.

UGANDA We connected with Colin of Encounter Church last year September, when he presented to us an opportunity to do three wells in northern Uganda. This year June we received the go-ahead, and Colin is currently in Uganda as we speak. He and another partner went up to do preliminary planning and lay down the ground work for the drilling to commence. We expect to hear back 08 |

SOUTH AFRICA We had a meeting with the amazing ladies at POPUP in Gauteng, South Africa, a ministry to needy and unemployed persons. They are based up in Pretoria with plans so expand to other major cities in South Africa. POPUP was started in 2006 as a homeless shelter, from there they have moved away from the night shelter and now focus on training and skills development for unemployed persons. Over the years they have trained more than 7000 persons with a 15 day Foundations for Life course as their most successful initiative. POPUP sees between 400-600 students each year, and between 5070% make new or recommitments to Christ through their courses.

| PROJECT UPDATE

PROJECT UPDATE: FIRST 1000 DAYS PROGRAM CBN works in partnership with Living Hope to teach and equip pregnant women and mothers of new babies, especially those who are HIV+, to raise their children to stay HIV – and to raise their children to make good choices in life. It’s because of your partnership that we can impact the lives of mothers like Mother N and her baby. The following story was the last story shared by our lactation officer. South Africa encourages all women to breastfeed, even those who are HIV+. For women who are HIV+, their breast milk has been shown to protect their baby from their HIV, if they are taking their antiretroviral, and they exclusively breastfeed their infant for the first 6 months of life. Exclusivity is a challenging word and even, concept, for some 10 |

who don’t have strong English skills. So, when I teach, I specifically say “breast milk ONLY--no water, no porridge, no gripe water, no tea, and no milk from another mother.” I first visited Mother N when her baby was only a few days old. They were referred by FBH. Our home visit started like most--she was living in a shack on a property next to her mother, by herself. She was in bed and was having some pain in her lower abdomen from the birth. I did my routine checks, weighed the baby, noted in his Road to Health book that we visited, and saw the PCR sticker which indicated to me that Mother N is HIV+. I explained how important it was that Baby N only receive her breastmilk, to protect him from the HIV. Mixed feeding is dangerous and increases the chance that he may con-

tract HIV from her milk. I had a discussion about how she can encourage her mother to only feed the baby breastmilk. And, her mother does give the baby other sources of baby food (not breast milk). We quietly had a discussion about how to encourage her mother, without having to reveal her status, to feed only her baby her milk--”it protects against infections - diarrhoea and others” With her permission and encouragement, I shared that bit of education with her mother, too. Granny N agreed he could cup feed the baby the expressed milk Mother N would leave for them. And, I made sure that Mother N could adequately and efficiently hand express so she’d be able to leave ample milk for her baby to drink while she was away. She felt confident in that plan, but in general seemed a little unsure about parenting. I left my number with her in case any additional questions came up for her as we didn’t have an active mother-baby group going at the time. About 2 weeks later, she texted me about concerns about her son’s bowel/ gas. A very common concern among new mother. I suggested a few things to try. Then, she asked if it was possible to stop breastfeeding. I gave her more tips, and reassured her that actually, her breast milk was just right for him. His daytime stooling was normal. He was doing just what we’d expect from a 3 week old baby, etc. I also explained that our breast milk is the best “gripe water” out there. And, she replied “Thanks a lot I am calm, I was stressing.” I offered to see her the next day when I was in Masi again, but she replied “Thanks a lot. I feel at easy now” Another couple weeks later, I got an-

other message from Mother N--asking about how to feed her baby because she needed to write a makeup exam. She was stressing because it was her last opportunity to write the exam, as she had missed the original day. But, she wasn’t sure, due to how long she needed to be away because of transport timing, how she could feed the baby--she didn’t have enough milk to leave for her mother. She still hadn’t shared her status with her mother, and wasn’t sure what she could do. So, we problem solved. I suggested maybe her granny could go with her-she could feed the baby before the exam, Granny could care for the baby during the exam, and then after the exam, she could feed the baby again while they waited for the transport. Essentially, my suggestion was that she bring the baby with her so she only had to be away from the baby during the exam and not ALL DAY due to transport. This simple solution wasn’t something she had thought about. A couple days later, she reported back that she’d written well. She had asked a friend with a car to wait for her, and after she wrote her exam she was able to feed her son. She had also recently been to the clinic and learned her boy was growing well. “Thank you so much, having someone to talk to makes things easy for me” Thank you CBN Partners for your contribution! It’s because of your faithfulness that we can help mothers and babies and together build better and healthier communities!

SA COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER VISITS CBN GHANA As a continuation of the Creative Communications Summit, which was hosted by the CBN South Africa Regional office, it was an absolute honour for me to visit the CBN Ghana office in New Achimota. The main objectives were to get Sarah Okoye & Jennifer Dafwat from 700 Club Nigeria on board with our greater CBN Africa communications strategy and to get their input for our website which is currently being developed from scratch. All of which was presented at the Creative Communications Summit, however, unfortunately Sarah & Jennifer were unable to attend the conference. Another objective of the trip was so that we could spend some time equipping and mobilizing Deborah in her newly appointed role as the Communications person in Ghana. This is also part of our CBN Southern Africa office vision, to equip and to mobilize our bordering offices in their work at CBN. We also ended up discussing and extending

our CBN Africa communications strategy in new ways that will make sense for all the multi-faceted countries within our massive continent. The trip was incredibly eye opening for me both professionally and personally, as I have never engaged with such a new culture in such a profound way. I was absolutely welcomed by every individual I met and even by the Uber drivers, who mostly claimed to be believers in Jesus Christ. It was a blessing to visit Mr Sola’s office in Ghana and be welcomed into his family home as well for lunch. I was blessed to be part of their incredible team for the time I was there and I look forward to building an ongoing relationship with them and with Deborah. Thank you so much to CBN for trusting me and for sending me on a once in a lifetime opportunity, I was humbled and blessed, and reminded of why we do what we do. | 15

BRING IT ON

Q&A

Your questions, with honest answers by Pat Robertson

Q: In Isaiah 40:31, the Bible says “they that wait upon the LORD shal renew their strength.” What does “wait upon the Lord” mean in this verse?

Pat Robertson Founder of The Christian Broadcasting Network

Do you have a question for Pat? Log on to CBN. com/BringItOnline and follow the instructions to submit your question.

When the Apostle Peter was persecuted and locked up and chained in prison, the early Christian church prayed fervently and without ceasing for him. As they prayed, they waited on the Lord. They didn’t stop praying the prayer of faith. They believed, focusing completely on the Lord. That’s what waiting on the Lord means. You’re fully concentrating on nothing but the Lord—and His power to do all things. When you wait upon the Lord like this, He will fulfill the desire of your heart like He did for Peter. The Lord answered those prayers and caused the chains to fall off of Peter by sending an angel to help him escape in the middle of the night without the prison guards noticing.
