OFFICIAL WELCOME

Canberra is a world city, our capital and an exciting place to do business. It’s a city bustling with innovation. Cutting edge researchers, Nobel Prize winners, federal politicians, innovative thinkers, artists, media figures and business leaders all call our great city home.

It’s this mix of interesting people that makes Canberra a city of knowledge, culture and influence – a city which visitors feel and remember. And it’s easier than ever to get here. A new international airport, with flights to Asia and Europe, opens our city to the world and as the 2018 Lonely Planet ranking highlights, we are a city worth exploring. Canberra is a dynamic city, abundant with prestigious establishments and national treasures, such as the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia and Australian Parliament House. Our national story is held within their walls, making them ideal places to host conferences and events. THINK Canberra and the Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG) were established by the Canberra Convention Bureau to connect your events with these institutions, and the thought leaders who work there. You’ll quickly discover that our city is in the middle of an evolution. Popular precincts, such as NewActon, Braddon, Manuka and Kingston buzz with activity. Pop-up stores, award winning architecture, lively brewpubs, cultural festivals, music and public art are at the heart of our city; it has something to offer everyone. Canberra is currently the home of the Australian space agency – an important role that the nation’s capital is well suited to play. Likewise, being home to five of Australia’s top-ranking universities and a range of research centres, we continue to forge our reputation as Australia’s knowledge capital and powerhouse of information. Canberra’s relatively smaller size is its advantage. Access to places and people is easier than anywhere else in the country. Our city was designed for ease of movement and collaboration. Congestion free, this is a city where your delegates can accomplish more. With the help of the Canberra Convention Bureau team, you can access all of Canberra’s unique offerings to design an event program that will inform, entertain, inspire and impress. Our capital is justifiably a world city, and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Michael Matthews Chief Executive Officer Canberra Convention Bureau

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” ONE GIANT LEAP In 2019, the whole world will celebrate 50 years since Neil Armstrong said those famous words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The very first iconic TV images from the Moon on 21 July 1969 were transmitted to NASA’s space-tracking facility at Honeysuckle Creek outside Canberra, which then broadcast them to an audience of 600 million people around the world. Since the earliest interplanetary spacecraft went to the moon, Venus and Mars in the early 1960s, and the Apollo journeys between 1967 and 1972, Canberra has played a vital role in command, telemetry and control for virtually every mission to leave our planet. Today, NASA’s Deep Space Network facility at Tidbinbilla in the ACT – the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) – continues a nearly 60-year history of support for the hundreds of human and robotic missions exploring the solar system and beyond.

CSIRO’s CDSCC Director, Dr Ed Kruzins, when highlighting the ACT’s importance, says: “Space exploration has been an important part of the Canberra landscape since the 1960s. We’ve been at the forefront of this frontier through the expertise of generations of ‘space trackers’ in the ACT. We also want to see more innovation and jobs in this area, which is why we also pride ourselves on our role in STEM education, teaching the next generation who will take us to the stars.” As the space, satellite and spatial industries expand worldwide, Canberra continues to thrive as a hub for innovation and excellence. The city is home to the headquarters for some of the key innovators in the industry, including CSIRO, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and EOS Defence Systems. The Australian National University and the Canberra campus of the University of New South Wales, are highly regarded research leaders in space engineering, physics, remote sensing, propulsion, astronomy and astrophysics. That “one small step” in 1969 remains Canberra’s call for you to make “one giant leap” with us into the future.

CANBERRA’S COOL CLIMATE WINE REGION

Your delegates can enjoy one of the country’s premier wine regions right here in Canberra. Only 35 minutes drive from the CBD, you’ll find 140 cool climate vineyards and 30 boutique cellar doors. Often the winemaker, who deeply knows and understands the terroir of the region and the varieties of blends, will serve you.

46

The cool climate, vineyard elevations, soil types and the winemaker’s skill combine to create wines that are recognised nationally and internationally. Canberra’s vineyards have a great variety in altitude and microclimates. With vineyards up to an altitude of 850m, every classic variety performs well somewhere in the region. We are known for our Shiraz, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Tempranillo and rare varieties like Gruner Veltliner. With a strong artisan culture, enjoy our region’s boutique labels and meet the winemaker on a tour. Look out for labels like Shaw Wines, Mount Majura Vineyard, Lark Hill Winery, Clonakilla, Contentious character, Lerida Estate and Granitevale Estate. CANBERRA REGION

Credit: Lincoln Downs Resort

Canberra is Australia’s capital city, and home to the national government. It is a beautiful and unique city deliberately designed and built to nestle into the bush and surrounding landscape. Centrally located on the eastern seaboard of Australia, Canberra is also an excellent base for exploring other parts of the country. The Australian bush experience is only a short drive away at Namadgi National Park and you can meet our native wildlife, like koalas, at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

Heading south of Canberra is Australia’s high country. The Kosciusko National Park has many snowfields in winter. In summer, the alpine region is popular with bushwalkers, horse riders and mountain bikers. The region of the Southern Tablelands to the north of Canberra offers historic towns and rural villages, packed with food, wine, arts and craft. The historic country towns of Yass, Goulburn, Braidwood and Berrima are an easy drive away. Two hours away, you’ll find some of the best beaches in the world, the South Coast of New South Wales. With white sand and clear blue waters, the South Coast has a range of towns close to the water, surrounded by beautiful coastal forest.
