A NATION’S STORIES BROUGHT TO LIFE

Canberra is more than the capital of Australia - it is where the nation’s stories come to life. The city’s national institutions offer unique spaces and immersive experiences where history and modernity converge, fostering connection and inspiration.

A NEW ERA FOR THE AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL

The Australian War Memorial is an iconic venue that continues to evolve, ensuring the country’s stories of bravery, sacrifice, and resilience are carried forward. Serving as a museum, archive, and shrine, it helps visitors reflect on the enduring impact of war.

This year, the Memorial is unveiling newly developed spaces, including the main entrance foyer featuring the striking ‘Oculus.’ This circular skylight offers a unique view of the original entrance from below, while Canberra’s distinctive sky illuminates from above.

Another must-see are the new state-of-the-art event spaces, including a flexible 250-seat tiered theatre, plus a versatile conference and event room with views towards Anzac Parade and room for cocktail events up to 220 people. Further galleries will open in 2026, with all refurbishments expected to be completed by 2028.

“The Australian War Memorial exists to lead the nation’s commemoration and understanding of the Australian experience of war. What we have lost and what we have gained,” said Matt Anderson, Director, Australian War Memorial.

Joe Colangelo, General Manager of ACT Retail, Trippas White Group added, “The Memorial’s development works have delivered world-class function facilities that continue to enhance its reputation as a premier events venue. Combining unique experiences with impeccable service, this cherished institution creates an unparalleled setting for events.”

The design of the spaces goes beyond functionality, embodying qualities such as teamwork, resourcefulness, and resilience. In the new conference room, back-lit images depicting homefront experiences during wartime create a setting that inspires and connects visitors to Australia’s wartime efforts.

ICONIC VENUES FOR MEANINGFUL EVENTS

Beyond the Australian War Memorial, Canberra’s national institutions offer a wealth of opportunities to immerse visitors in stories that define the nation, each providing a distinctive lens through which to experience Australia’s identity.

With its world-class collection, including Indigenous art and works by international masters, the National Gallery of Australia highlights art as a timeless storyteller. Delegates are drawn into a journey of creativity and history, inspiring a deeper connection to Australia’s cultural narrative.

Similarly, the National Portrait Gallery uses storytelling through powerful works of art, offering a space to engage with Australia’s identity through its people. Here the focus is on the diverse and ever-changing nature of the Australian identity.

The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House and Australian Parliament House showcase the nation’s democratic journey. The first offers an intimate look at Australia’s political history, the latter offering the unique opportunity for an inspiring venue for business events at the very heart of Australian politics.

The National Museum of Australia captures the rich tapestry of Australia’s people, history, and culture, with exhibits weaving together narratives of the past and present. Meanwhile, the National Film and Sound Archive preserves Australia’s cultural voice through film, sound, and multimedia, creating a nostalgic and immersive setting connecting generations.

EXPERIENCES THAT RESONATE BEYOND THE CONFERENCE ROOM

Whether standing in quiet contemplation at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier, admiring art that reflects Australia’s identity, meeting within the walls of Australia’s democratic history, or collaborating in cutting-edge spaces, Canberra offers delegates opportunities that resonate beyond the conference room. In Canberra, every meeting becomes part of a larger story - Australia’s story.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Canberra Convention Bureau is here to partner with you when you’re planning your next conference or business event. By tapping into our professional expertise and in-depth local knowledge, you can create inspiring, innovative and engaging conferences in the nation’s capital just like some of our past clients.

TheMHS Learning Network worked with us for their ‘TheMHS Conference 2024: Finding Common Ground’. Bringing over 800 delegates together from all areas of the mental health service industry.

Unlike in other cities, having the conference in Canberra allowed us to engage further with key government departments. It was a great opportunity to connect with the Department of Health and Aged Care who provide us funding and show them the impact of their bursary in real time, which helped strengthen the collaboration between government and the wider mental health sector. Canberra is also accessible from most other cities, with many delegates driving from Sydney. Working with the Bureau was crucial in the success of our event, their support and guidance in securing key suppliers helped us save time so we could focus on creating a successful event that also had a local flavour.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) assigned Canberra Convention Bureau to help with the development of their 2024 congress. Over four and a half days, the 2024 RANZCP Congress attracted over 1,300 delegates who experienced an array of presentations, plenary and workshops as well as social activities including yoga, bush walking and a gala dinner and awards night.

Overall, the 2024 RANZCP Congress truly exemplified its theme: Excellence and Empathy, Knowledge and Kindness.” A/Prof Jeffrey Looi, Co-Convenor & Scientific Program Chair, RANZCP 2024 Congress.

Jessica Stratton went on to say, “Thank you to the Canberra Convention Bureau for helping us to run a successful conference in Canberra with delegates benefiting from an easily accessible location and great social and wellness opportunities, such as the Bonsai Workshop at the National Arboretum and Indigenous walking tour to Mount Majura, as well as helping us to source a fantastic local photographer who captured many great moments across the week.”

Jessica Stratton, Manager Conferences and Events, The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

The Australian representative on the International Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Atomic Collisions in Solids & the International Symposium on Swift Heavy Ions in Matter organised a joint conference for the first time in Australia. The event hosted 94 delegates from 15 countries and was held at the ANU Research School of Physics.

The support and information provided by the Canberra Convention Bureau was very useful for the delegates to experience the beautiful Nation’s capital. For many this was their first visit to Canberra and even Australia. Working with the Canberra Convention Bureau was efficient and professional and was an enormous help to put together an exciting social program for the conference. I recommend anyone organising an event in Canberra to contact the CCB, it can save a lot of time and provide valuable resources for a successful implementation.

Professor Patrick Kluth, Department of Materials Physics, Research School of Physics, Australian National University.

“Canberra is a surprising treasure trove of event spaces, within a stone’s throw from the CBD. I was surprised at the number of different options, from heritage hotels to super funky venues and museums that transform after dark. The Bureau’s attentive service and local insights made our stay comfortable and memorable. Thank you!”

Katie Tomkins, Events Director, Iceberg Events, QLD, 2024.

“Canberra is such a diverse & culturally rich destination for business events, conference and incentives. The stories to be unravelled during a visit are interesting and make you proud to be an Australian and have a wonderful place like Canberra as our Capital. There are many different options for business events to consider when it comes to venues and experiences for all size groups, and travelling between locations is quick and easy, making it a great option to include many offsite attractions within your event program.”

SUSTAINABLE EVENTS

When you hold your business event in Canberra, you are also showcasing your commitment to a more sustainable future. The nation’s capital is both a highly liveable city and globally recognised as one of the most sustainable in the world. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) continues to deliver one of the most ambitious climate action agendas in the world.

TAP INTO OUR ENERGY

Since 2020, the ACT has been powered entirely by renewable electricity generated from wind and photovoltaic sources, making it the first city outside Europe—and the eighth in the world—to achieve this milestone.

Canberra boasts Australia’s first testing facility for replacing natural gas with hydrogen and is home to the country’s largest community-owned solar farm. Additionally, the Big Canberra Battery project, will enhance renewable energy security across the electricity grid. This initiative includes installing solar batteries in multiple government buildings and constructing a grid-scale battery with a capacity of 500 MWh, enough to power 23,400 households on a single charge. The ACT is also on track to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.

WATCH THIS GREEN SPACE

Canberra is a modern, well-planned, and green city, with nature never too far away. In fact, you’ll find around 70% of the territory is pure open space, parkland, or nature reserve. And don’t be surprised to see some of the native wildlife right in the heart of town.

GETTING AROUND

A smaller and well-connected city means it’s easy to get around. The expanding light rail network is completely powered by renewable energy, while 87% of Canberra’s transport infrastructure uses green energy. The extensive bike path network also makes it easy to reduce your carbon footprint in a fun way using electric scooters, bikes, or on foot. Canberra also has the highest number of electric vehicle charging stations per capita in Australia and was the first to have a public green hydrogen refuelling station for hydrogen vehicles.

OUR CLEAN AIR

Situated at a higher altitude near the mountains, Canberra benefits from cleaner air due to improved circulation and minimal pollution. As a meticulously planned city with more green spaces than concrete developments, it boasts air quality that is well above average for a capital city. Local government incentivises residents to further reduce air pollution by replacing wood heaters with electric and legislating against gas appliances in new builds.

WASTE NOT

Waste reduction is also a strong focus in Canberra, and infrastructure is in place to sort and process everything from food scraps to construction waste. The supply of single use plastics is also prohibited in the ACT.

GREEN CONFERENCING AND EVENTS

Canberra is well set up and experienced in running events with a reduced carbon footprint. If arriving by air, you land at the award-winning Canberra Airport, which was among the first in the world to install tri-generation plants, reducing carbon emissions by 75%. Local government also incentivises businesses to implement sustainable practices. And Canberra is the home of many academic and innovative institutions which can provide your conference with speakers and experts in the field of sustainability.

SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION

In Australia, sustainability certification options for the tourism industry include programs such as Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Certification and EarthCheck Certified which assess environmental, cultural, and operational sustainability practices to promote eco-friendly tourism.

ACCESSIBLE EVENTS

It has been estimated that one in five people have accessibility needs, so we understand how important it is to consider accessibility when planning an event.

Canberra is a thoughtfully planned city with a variety of highly accessible venues. With minimal traffic issues, wide streets, transit lanes, bike paths, and its iconic roundabouts, it’s an easy place to navigate. Many venues, such as Australia’s national institutions, are designed with features like ramps, wider parking spaces, audio tours, and braille pads, ensuring they are accessible for people using wheelchairs, as well as those with sight or hearing impairments.

For some special experiences there is wheelchair basketball at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the sparkling interaction of Questacon and the delightful sights, smells and sounds of the National Zoo and Aquarium and the Australian National Botanical Gardens. Tours can be tailored specifically to the needs of groups or individuals, with various mobility vehicles available for hire at each venue.

Through the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC), the Accessible Tourism program provides certification to tourism businesses that meet criteria for supporting low vision, wheelchairs and scooters, low hearing, limited mobility, and cognitive or autism-related needs.

CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS

From the red and amber leaves that blanket the city in autumn, to the bright pops of colour as the blooms emerge in spring, Canberra enjoys four distinct seasons. And no matter when you visit, there’s always something wonderful to discover.

AUTUMN

As the leaves turn and the temperature drops, Canberra’s mountain range, lake and expansive nature reserves provide a spectacular backdrop to immerse oneself in autumn. The city rises early and looks to the skies for the Canberra Balloon Spectacular and then stays up late to watch the national institutions illuminated for Enlighten. Head up in a hot air balloon yourself for a birds-eye view of the capital that you’ll never forget.

Once harvest is finished for the year, it’s also the perfect time to visit one of Canberra region’s 140 cool-climate vineyards, either just for a taste to discover a new favourite, or to indulge in one of the winery restaurants where you can settle in for a feast of local produce.

WINTER

While the mornings may be frosty, winter in Canberra tends to boast crystal clear skies and beautiful days. Head to the National Arboretum for spectacular views and explore forest trees wrapped in bright scarves for the season. Watch a game of Rugby or NRL, browse an art exhibition or head to the theatre. You can also indulge at the Truffle Festival - either enjoy the tasty morsels in dishes around town or head to a nearby truffle farm and follow a truffle dog on a hunt. For delegates who want to extend their stay, it’s a short 2.5-hour trip south to the ski fields for some alpine adventures.

SPRING

When spring has sprung, the place to be in Canberra is Commonwealth Park, where more than one million flowers bloom in unison for the month-long Floriade, Australia’s biggest celebration of spring.

With the weather warming up, it’s a great time to get outdoors. Take your picnic out onto Lake Burley Griffin with a self-drive Love Boat or take things slow, rent a pedal boat and then lunch with a view at The Marion. Simply take a walk around the lake or drive out to the ACT’s picturesque national parks for many hiking opportunities.

SUMMER

The summer months in Canberra are best enjoyed outdoors, whether it’s watching the cricket at Manuka Oval, or enjoying the long days and balmy conditions at an outdoor bar or restaurant.

The temperatures tend to stay quite pleasant, but if you’re looking to cool down, the national institutions and art galleries always have an exciting program this time of year. After taking in an exhibition or at the end of a conference day, why not wind down lakeside at The Jetty.
