Michael Matthews Chief Executive Officer Canberra Convention Bureau

Canberra is a world city, your capital, and an exciting place to do business. Cutting-edge researchers, Nobel Prize winners, federal politicians, innovative thinkers, artists, media figures and business leaders all call our great city home. It’s this mix of interesting people that makes Canberra a city of knowledge, culture and influence – a city that delegates feel and remember. This 2022 Meeting Planners Guide focuses beyond recovery with confidence that our planned and congestion-free city is the place where domestic planners will bring their business events, offering a controlled return to business activity. Canberra is now more connected than ever through increased air routes around Australia. Our convenient proximity to major population centres makes us the meeting destination of choice. We’re a dynamic city, abundant with prestigious establishments such as the National Museum of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, and Australian Parliament House. Our national story is held within their walls, making them ideal places to host business events. THINK Canberra and the Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG), established by Canberra Convention Bureau, connect your events with these institutions, and the thought leaders who work there. Canberra continues to forge its reputation as Australia’s powerhouse of information and justify its title as the ‘Knowledge Capital’. The city is home to five of Australia’s topranking universities and a range of research centres. You’ll quickly discover that the city is ever evolving. Popular precincts, such as NewActon, Civic, Braddon and Kingston Foreshore buzz with activity. An advantage of holding your event in a well-designed city the size of Canberra is the ease of movement and connectivity. People within Canberra’s business events community take pride in working collaboratively to deliver on your business events outcomes, where planners and delegates can simply achieve more. EXPLORE OUR GREAT SOUTHERN LAND

EXPLORE OUR GREAT SOUTHERN LAND

A 21st birthday marks a significant milestone; a firm evolution to a new level of maturity. For the National Museum of Australia (NMA), 2022 marks 21 years of the institution preserving and telling the stories of Australia’s social history, as well as our unique and distinctive land, nation, and people.

INSPIRING A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

It will also see the NMA complete the most significant redevelopment of its galleries to date with the opening of the Great Southern Land gallery.

“The gallery aims to connect visitors to the continent’s rich biodiversity and seasonal rhythms, and in doing so to inspire love, care, and respect towards the natural environments we call home,” says Dr Trinca.

“The Great Southern Land gallery will explore the vast and complex Australian continent, its ancient origins, geological features, unique species, natural forces and the part humans play in the ecosystem. It will feature many objects and digital interactives which take gallery design to new levels,” said NMA director, Dr Mathew Trinca. “When the new gallery opens, visitors will be immersed in the incredible ecological and natural history of the Australian continent and reflect on the role they play in this important and challenging story.” Expected to open in mid-2022, the Great Southern Land gallery will feature interactive and immersive digital experiences, and more than 1,200 objects, many of which have never been displayed before. It was designed by Local Projects, the team behind the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York and the renewal of the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney.

Event set up at National Museum of Australia Credit: National Museum of Australia

The permanent Great Southern Land gallery forms part of the NMA’s transformative Master Plan, announced in late 2018, which will see upgrades to the museum and an extended range of public experiences. AN ENHANCED EVENT EXPERIENCE The Great Southern Land gallery will also create two additional event and meeting spaces, both due to open mid-2022.

SUPPORT FOR EVENT ORGANISERS

The new permanent gallery will explore Australia’s fundamental deep connections to the land, and its ancient landscapes, fauna, flora, and diverse communities.

The gallery will speak to the stories that showcase a love of the land, custodianship of country and our responsibilities to it. It will optimistically explore how listening to this ancient continent will help us address global environmental challenges, now and into the future, and inspire visitors to rethink their own connection to the land, and the role they can play in preserving it. It’s a fitting addition for Canberra, which was named the world’s most sustainable city in 2021 by UK comparison company Uswitch, and was also the first Australian jurisdiction to be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, which was achieved back in 2020.

The Gallery Mezzanine will be an open venue next to the Visions Theatre, available for exclusive use and seating up to 200 guests. The space suits a breakout area, exhibition zone, cocktail lounge or dramatic dinner space, immersed amongst the gallery. Adjoining the Theatre will be Visions Landing, an intimate space overlooking Lake Burley Griffin through floor to ceiling windows. The venue seats up to 40 guests and suits a breakout area, bar space or dinner spot for smaller groups. The Great Southern Land gallery will diversify the institution’s already memorable functions offering, providing new ways for planners to create unique and memorable events in Canberra from 2022.

SPACE AND SPATIAL SCIENCE

Canberra is the best place in Australia to connect with defence and security experts, and nowhere else in the country boasts the same proximity to decision makers, procuring agencies and government infrastructure.

Canberra has long played a critical role in some of the biggest events in international space exploration, from the broadcast of the first TV images of the moon landing back in 1969, to the Phoenix landing on Mars more recently.

Canberra enjoys an established defence industry network as the home of the Department of Defence, key national security, intelligence and border protection agencies, law enforcement, key global defence companies, and Australian Federal Government.

We are a space science leader and contribute to the global space industry through our research and education institutions such as the Australian National Space Mission Design Facility at UNSW Canberra and the ANU National Space Test Facilities.

Important defence training and industry bodies are located here, including the historic Royal Military College at Duntroon, the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Australian Command and Staff College, as well as the Australian Industry and Defence Network. Our highly skilled workforce has productive industry and research partnerships and is developing innovative and cutting-edge technologies for defence.

CYBER SECURITY

AGRI-TECHNOLOGY AND FOOD SCIENCES

Canberra leads in the Australian cyber security industry, boasting a highly skilled workforce, research institutions, and proximity to government.

Canberra has long been a pioneer in agricultural science and technology, since 1903 when William Farrer bred the strain of Federation wheat just outside Canberra that revolutionised Australian agriculture.

When it comes to cyber security, we are recognised nationally and internationally for our cutting-edge infrastructure, hightech companies, and national security organisations, such as the Australian Signals Directorate and the Australian Secret Intelligence Organisation (ASIO). In Canberra, you can access a network of highly influential industry leaders, top-ranked universities spearheading national and international cyber security efforts, and innovative enterprises with a highly skilled and security-cleared workforce.

These days, Canberra has one of the highest concentrations of researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators in agri-technology, and is home to national agricultural peak bodies such as the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment and the National Farmers Federation. The Canberra Region advances agricultural, environmental, and primary industry research and addresses critical regional, national, and global challenges in agricultural and food technology, environmental sciences, and genetics and phenomics.

ICT AND E-GOVERNMENT

Just by meeting in Canberra, you’re contributing to a more sustainable future. In 2021, the capital was named the world’s most sustainable city by a UK comparison company.

Canberra ranks as one of the world’s most ICT-connected places and is a national leader for information and communications technologies. It was one of the first cities in the world to introduce an advanced broadband fibre optic cable network, and these days, many of the world’s leading IT organisations operate here, including Microsoft, HP Enterprise, and IBM.

Canberra is also the Asia-Pacific region’s most progressive territory in moving towards a low-carbon economy, and the ACT is powered by 100% renewable electricity, generated by wind and photovoltaic power, and on track to achieve zero net emissions by 2045. The ACT was also the first state government to invest in and trial green hydrogen technologies. Here you have access to leaders in their field at a range of institutions like the Distributed Energy Resources Lab, Energy Change Institute at ANU, and Canberra Institute of Technology.

14

Also paving the way in skills and research development are Canberra’s educational institutions. Establishments like the 3A Institute at ANU and Data61 are part of the Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG), a consortium of learning institutions, available for you to leverage for your next event. Canberra is also home to the Digital Transformation Agency, which is leading a strategy to make Australia one of the top three digital governments in the world by 2025.

WHY CANBERRA?

KNOWLEDGE, CULTURE, INFLUENCE

RICH WITH CULTURE, AND THE HOME OF THE AUSTRALIAN STORY Canberra is home to major cultural institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, and the Australian War Memorial. These establishments explore and celebrate the nation’s story, drawing strongly on our rich Indigenous culture and heritage. Our national institutions are ever expanding and evolving, like the ongoing major redevelopment of the Australian War Memorial, and the National Museum’s brand new Great Southern Land gallery, which explores our fundamental relationship to the land. Not only do they house unique artworks and artifacts, but they also transform into unique and impressive event venues for welcome receptions, gala dinners, or other social functions. Year-round, Canberra boasts an exciting calendar of events, from Floriade, a month-long celebration of spring, to the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, Enlighten, The Truffle Festival, Summernats, the National Folk Festival, and Design Canberra. The capital is also a proud sporting city, home of the Brumbies, Raiders, GWS Giants, CBR Brave, Capitals, Meteors, and Canberra United.

ACCESS DECISION MAKERS AND INFLUENTIAL LEADERS The ACT is well known and regarded as a pioneering territory, often paving the way both in Australia and internationally. In 2021, the ACT was the first Australian jurisdiction to double vaccinate over 98 per cent of its eligible population against COVID-19, also making it one of the world’s most vaccinated jurisdictions. The ACT Government is a leader on many platforms, often ahead of federal initiatives including samesex marriage, cannabis legislation and well-being indicator framework, while the ACT achieved the ambitious goal of running 100 per cent on renewable electricity in 2020 – the first state or territory in Australia to do so. Canberra is also a meeting place for some of the country’s most influential people. At the heart of it all is Australian Parliament House, the central pillar of Australia’s democracy and one of the most accessible parliamentary buildings in the world. Here you can meet with federal politicians and influence decision makers around the key issues affecting your industry. It’s also home to the Federal Parliament Press Gallery, providing the opportunity to get your spokespersons in front of the world’s most prominent media outlets.

INDIGENOUS CULTURE

INDIGENOUS CULTURE Canberra is Ngunnawal country and has been home to the Ngunnawal people for over 20,000 years. Our city’s name, ‘Canberra’, is thought to be derived from the Ngunnawal word for ‘meeting place,’ and the capital offers a range of indigenous experiences for your delegates to learn, share and participate in.

WELCOME TO COUNTRY A Welcome to Country allows an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander custodian to welcome visitors to their land through speech, song, dance or ceremony. Recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, the nation’s First Peoples and custodians of the land, with welcome and acknowledgement protocols in your event. EXHIBITIONS AND TOURS Aboriginal Tent Embassy: Founded on Australia Day 1972, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy was set up by four Indigenous Australians – Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Tony Coorey and Bertie Williams – protesting the McMahon government’s approach to Indigenous land rights. Today, the embassy is permanently established on the lawns outside Old Parliament House and has come to represent Indigenous Australians’ quest for sovereignty and right to self-determination. Australian Parliament House: The ‘Yeribee’: Indigenous experiences of Parliament House tour shares the stories of our Indigenous parliamentarians and staff, explores the site history of Parliament House, and showcases significant artworks from the Parliament House Art Collection by celebrated Indigenous artists. Dhawura Aboriginal Cultural Tours: Travel back in time to become part of ‘The Dreaming’ and gain a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture with an experienced Aboriginal guide.

National Triangle: Take a self-guided tour through the artwork at Reconciliation Place. Located in the heart of the National Triangle, these artworks symbolically and physically place reconciliation at the heart of the nation. National Gallery of Australia: Immerse yourself in the most comprehensive Indigenous Australian Art Collection in the world or take an Indigenous Cultural Tour with a local Aboriginal tour guide. The 4th National Indigenous Art Triennial: Ceremony, running from 26 Mar – 31 Jul 2022, offers a program of events featuring 35 Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander artists. National Museum of Australia: First Australians and Talking Blak to History are permanent exhibition galleries that explore the shared stories and experiences of Australia’s first peoples. The museum’s First Australians Tour presents the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their history, culture and connection to country in the building’s largest exhibition gallery. Opening in 2022, Great Southern Land is an exhibition of artefacts and unique Australian tales that will also tell the stories of the earliest Indigenous inhabitants and everyone who followed.

EXPERIENCE CANBERRA

Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD): Join a special tour, which considers aspects of the experiences of Indigenous Australians within our democracy at MoAD. Hear stories of how Indigenous Australians and their supporters have taken different pathways to bring about change, many of which led them here – the seat of Federal Parliament between 1927 and 1988. Bespoke tours can be arranged for a range of tour sizes with advance booking.

National Arboretum Canberra: The Mununja Garden, shaped in a butterfly form, located in the Gallery of Gardens at the Arboretum tells a Dreamtime story from the Ngunnawal people that has been passed through generations for thousands of years. Ngala Tours, a new offering from the Arboretum, provides Indigenous tours and experiences including Discovery bus tours and immersive cultural experiences such as Walk on Country and Discover Art and Country tours.

CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS

CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS Canberra enjoys four distinct seasons, from the endless blue skies and warm days of summer, through to the fresh mornings in winter, and the beautifully temperate autumn and spring. No matter when you visit for your event, there are ample activities and experiences to enjoy. SUMMER

WINTER

With balmy weather that extends well into the evening, conferencing during Canberra summer means your delegates can go straight from the conference venue to outdoor dining in one of the city’s many summer-friendly restaurants and bars.

The quintessential winter experience in Canberra includes a glass of local wine in front of the fire and indulging in truffles. You can even take your delegates on a truffle hunt just 10 minutes from the city centre, to see first-hand how the exclusive and mouth-watering morsels are found.

Cricket fans can treat themselves to a live match at Manuka Oval, including international clashes, while lovers of all things horsepower can attend the annual Summernats event. And don’t miss the summer blockbuster exhibitions at Canberra’s museums, art galleries and national institutions. AUTUMN Autumn in Canberra is a kaleidoscope of colours as the exotic trees transform and paint the town vibrant tones. Lap up the views by hiring a GoBoat on Lake Burley Griffin, for one of the best ways to visually capture the change in season, or get the heart pumping with a hike to the top of Mt Ainslie or Black Mountain, to enjoy the colourful expanse from above.

Back in the city, warm up in the hot shop at the Canberra Glassworks and be inspired as you watch the glass creations of local glass artists come to life. SPRING As the days get longer and the temperatures get warmer, spring in Canberra brings with it a sense of renewal and energy. The season in Canberra is most synonymous with Floriade, Australia’s month-long celebration of spring. See impressive displays of flowers bloom across the city, and take part in the rich program of workshops, entertainment, and events. As the weather warms up, it’s a great time of year to make your event program an active one. Head for a hike in one of the picturesque national parks, with ample options just a short drive from the city centre.

EXPERIENCE CANBERRA

It’s also a season packed with events. Get out of bed early to witness the mesmerising Canberra Balloon Spectacular, and stay up late to see the city’s signature festival of illuminations, Enlighten. Or watch the short films of Lights! Canberra! Action!, taste your way through the Night Noodle Markets, and take part in the celebrations of Canberra Day.

Canberra is also an easy 2.5 hours to the snowfields, making it a great option for a day trip, or to extend your stay once the conference is over.

ALPINE ADVENTURES

SOUTH COAST

Breathe in the crisp mountain air and take in the pristine countryside of Australia’s Alpine region, just 2.5 hours’ from Canberra.

Canberra may not have its own coastline, but just a scenic two-hour drive away is the picturesque South Coast. Running from Jervis Bay, an annexe of the ACT, down to the Sapphire Coast, the region boasts unspoilt coastline, making it the perfect antidote to a busy conference program.

The area is most famous for the winter months, and snow enthusiasts will love a trip to the slopes of Perisher, Thredbo, Guthega, Charlotte Pass and the family-friendly Selwyn Snowfields. But the area caters to visitors year-round, from alpine horseback treks to mountain biking, fresh river trout, white water rafting, or hiking Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko. Capturing the year-round beauty of the area is Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa, where event planners can find meeting spaces and boutique accommodation.

Here, your delegates can snorkel with the seals, discover historic villages, learn to surf, explore beautiful national parks, or just watch the waves roll in from the stunning beaches. The area is also renowned for its oysters, which you can enjoy at the many eateries, or even join a tour of the oyster farms and taste them fresh from the river. Event planners will delight in Willinga Park at Bawley Point, an architecturally designed conference venue offering sophisticated spaces with vast bushland views. 53
