OFFICIAL WELCOME
Canberra is a world city, Australia’s capital and an exciting place to do business. It’s a city bustling with innovation. Cutting-edge researchers, Nobel Prize winners, federal politicians, innovative thinkers, artists, media figures and business leaders all call our great city home. It’s this mix of interesting people that makes Canberra a city of knowledge, culture and influence – a city that visitors feel and remember. And it’s easier than ever to get here. Canberra International Airport, with international flights to Asia and Europe, opens our city to the world, with daily direct flights to Singapore and Doha. Canberra is a dynamic city, abundant with prestigious establishments and national treasures such as the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia, and Australian Parliament House. Our national story is held within their walls, making them ideal places to host conferences and events.
You’ll quickly discover that the city is ever evolving. Popular precincts, such as NewActon, Braddon, Manuka and Kingston buzz with activity. Pop-up stores, award-winning architecture, lively brewpubs, cultural festivals, music and public art are at the heart of our city, which has something to offer everyone. An advantage of holding your event in a well-designed city the size of Canberra is the ease of movement and connectivity. People within Canberra’s business events community take pride in working collaboratively to deliver on your business events outcomes, where planners and delegates can simply achieve more. With the help of the Canberra Convention Bureau team, you can access all of Canberra’s unique offerings to design an event program that will inform, entertain, inspire and impress. Our capital is justifiably a world city, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
THINK CANBERRA and the Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG) were established by the Canberra Convention Bureau to connect your events with these institutions, and the thought leaders who work there. Canberra continues to forge its reputation as Australia’s powerhouse of information and justify its title as the ‘Knowledge Capital’. The city is home to five of Australia’s top-ranking universities and a range of research centres.

The Shine Dome - Australian Academy of Science
THE AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE
As the home of science in Australia, the Shine Dome is not only a cherished landmark on Canberra’s landscape, but a demonstration and champion of Australia’s academic and research strengths and capabilities. The Shine Dome, with its unique design and impressive architecture, reflects the inquiring and innovative nature of science. As an indication of its historical and architectural significance, it was the first Canberra building to be added to the National Heritage List. Today, it also operates as an inspiring and unique conference venue, ideal for the exchange of ideas and knowledge among delegates.
AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE
The Australian Academy of Science, housed in the Shine Dome and the adjacent historic Ian Potter House, is a national organisation focused on excellence in science and science education. Anna-Maria Arabia, Chief Executive at the Australian Academy of Science, highlights the importance of housing this significant national institution in Canberra: “As the leader in its field, the Shine Dome is the iconic home of the Australian Academy of Science, bringing together Australia’s most distinguished scientists to provide independent and authoritative scientific advice to decision makers, to build public awareness and understanding of science, to promote international scientific engagement, and to champion and celebrate scientific excellence.” “Given its independence and its national role and reach, it is fitting that the Academy and the Shine Dome are located in Canberra, connecting us to decision makers and the vibrant science sector in the nation’s capital,” adds Ms Arabia. The Australian Academy of Science is a foundation member of the Bureau’s Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG). This group is at the cornerstone of the knowledge, culture and influence that Canberra offers conferences. When you host a scientific or education conference or activity in Canberra, it is almost certain that scientific experts from the Australian Academy of Science will be part of the program or will add value in some way.

CULTURE AND THE HOME OF THE AUSTRALIAN STORY
ACCESS DECISION MAKERS AND INFLUENTIAL LEADERS
Culture is about our history, our present and our future.
Canberra was designed as Australia’s meeting place, and it’s only in the capital that you’ll find access to so many of the nation’s people of influence in one place.
We are richly endowed with major cultural institutions, such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Australian Mint and the Australian War Memorial. There is something here for everyone, and the unique buildings in which they are housed are often chosen as the venue for significant conference dinners and other functions. Australia’s rich Indigenous culture and history is explored and shared in our institutions, research centres and the great outdoors through artworks, tours and storytelling. Throughout the year, you can experience one of our vibrant multi-day events, such as Floriade, Enlighten and Canberra Balloon Spectacular, Design Canberra, FYI Canberra, the Truffle Festival or the Multicultural Festival. Canberra is a sporting city. Home to the Brumbies and Canberra Raiders, rugby fans are well served in our capital, along with GWS Giants supporters, who can attend home games at Manuka Oval throughout the AFL season. Five ICC Women’s T20 World Cup matches will be held at Manuka Oval, bringing cricket enthusiasts together in late February.
As the home of Australia’s federal government, choosing to host your event in Canberra facilitates access to decision and policy makers, enabling you to achieve measurable outcomes on any policy-related conference agenda. Parliament House is the heart of Australia’s democracy, and is also one of the most accessible parliamentary buildings in the world. A visit to Parliament House can include a tour of the world-renowned architecture and artworks, but it is also a chance to meet with federal parliamentarians that make decisions about what is important to your industry.

EXHIBITIONS AND TOURS
Reconciliation Place Walking Tour encourages participants to explore the physical and symbolic heart of Australian democratic and cultural life and recognise the importance of understanding the shared history of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
Founded on Australia Day 1972, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy was set up by four Indigenous Australians – Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Tony Coorey and Bertie Williams – protesting the McMahon government’s approach to Indigenous land rights. Today, the embassy is permanently established on the lawns outside Old Parliament House and has come to represent Indigenous Australians’ quest for sovereignty and right to self-determination. Dhawura Aboriginal Cultural Tours Travel back in time to become part of 'The Dreaming' and gain a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture with an experienced Aboriginal guide.

Summer is also a great time to explore Canberra’s many nature reserves – just don’t forget your hat and sunscreen! AUTUMN
