Named the world’s most sustainable city in 2021, and with lofty ambitions to achieve net zero emissions by 2045, Canberra is regarded as a leader in sustainability.

With its sights set firmly on a greener future, the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) is one Canberra attraction determined to help deliver on the Government’s sustainability targets with the launch of the brand-new Ian Potter National Conservatory.

As an iconic tourist attraction, the ANBG plays a central role in the conservation of native flora and vegetation and is home to the biggest collection of native Australian plants in the world. Due to open in the second half of 2023, the Ian Potter National Conservatory will contribute to the further expansion of the collection, as it becomes a national and international showcase for some of Australia’s most beautiful and unusual tropical native flora.

“The conservatory has been designed to be highly sustainable with low energy use. We think it’s the most energy-efficient conservatory anywhere in the world,” said Australian National Botanic Gardens General Manager Peter Byron.

The highly insulated walls keep the heat out in summer and keep heat inside during winter, while airlock doors and airtight construction minimises infiltration gains and losses. The high-performance glass roof and walls allow the space to be completely lit by sunlight during the day.

SHOWCASING AND PROTECTING A THREATENED LANDSCAPE

The $12 million conservatory project will feature an eyecatching floating cube design. Inside, the gallery will replicate the conditions of a tropical rainforest where visitors can immerse themselves in the sights and scents of the tropics. An impressive 17-metre-high rainforest chamber will feature plants from northern Queensland’s wet and dry tropics, while a downstairs section will house a ‘plant library’ displaying rare and threatened species – many that have never before been cultivated and will be on public display for the first time. A specially designed soundscape will add the effects of birds, the rustling of leaves, and frog calls from the forest floor.

“This project will allow us to display tropical flora from some of Australia’s most famous national parks and remote locations for Canberrans and visitors to the capital,” said Mr Byron. “Tropical plant species from Kakadu National Park, the wet tropics of northern Queensland, Christmas Island, and other exotic locations, are expected to be a tourism draw card for the Gardens while also operating as a world-class research facility for rare and threatened Australian tropical plants.”

A WHOLE NEW EVENT OFFERING

The ANBG already offers meeting planners an event venue with a difference – a peaceful oasis just moments from the city centre, with a diverse and ever-changing backdrop. The Ian Potter National Conservatory will further enhance this offering. Complementing existing indoor and outdoor event spaces, the Ian Potter National Conservatory forecourt will cater for intimate cocktail parties or functions of up to 80 people, with guests able to walk through the conservatory as part of the event experience.

Located just up the hill from Pollen Cafe, the Ian Potter National Conservatory will be a fully accessible venue, with ramp access, and full lift access to the lower conservatory level. The conservatory will present an exciting addition to Canberra’s world-class business events offering in 2023.

INDIGENOUS CULTURE

In 2023, Canberra will be at the heart of an important discussion around establishing an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. The city is on Ngunnawal country and has been home to the Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri peoples for over 20,000 years.

Our city’s name, ‘Canberra’, is thought to be derived from the Ngunnawal word for ‘meeting place,’ and the capital offers a range of indigenous experiences for your delegates to learn, share and participate in.

WELCOME TO COUNTRY

A Welcome to Country allows an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander custodian to welcome visitors to their land through speech, song, dance or ceremony. Recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, the nation’s First Peoples and custodians of the land, with welcome and acknowledgement protocols in your event.

EXHIBITIONS AND TOURS

Ngala Tours, a new offering from the Arboretum, provides Indigenous tours and experiences including Discovery bus tours and immersive cultural experiences such as Walk on Country and Discover Art and Country tours.

National Triangle: Take a self-guided tour through the artwork at Reconciliation Place. Located in the heart of the National Triangle, these artworks symbolically and physically place Reconciliation at the heart of the nation.

CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS

From the red and amber leaves that blanket the city in autumn, to the bright pops of colour as the blooms emerge in spring, Canberra enjoys four distinct seasons. And no matter when you visit, there’s always something wonderful to discover.

SUMMER

The summer months in Canberra are best enjoyed outdoors, whether it’s watching the cricket at Manuka Oval, or enjoying the long days and balmy conditions at an outdoor bar or restaurant.

The temperatures tend to stay quite pleasant, but if you’re looking to cool down, the national institutions and art galleries always have an exciting program this time of year. After taking in an exhibition or at the end of a conference day, why not wind down lakeside at The Jetty.

AUTUMN

If you’re after a jam-packed calendar of events to complement your conference program, autumn is the time to visit Canberra. The city stays up late to watch the national institutions illuminated for Enlighten, and then rises early and looks to the skies for the Canberra Balloon Spectacular. Head up in a hot air balloon yourself for a birds-eye view of the capital that you’ll never forget.

Once harvest is finished for the year, it’s also the perfect time to visit one of Canberra Region’s 140 cool-climate vineyards, either just for a taste to discover a new favourite, or to indulge in one of the winery restaurants where you can settle in for a feast of local produce.

WINTER

While the mornings may be frosty, winter in Canberra tends to boast crystal clear skies and beautiful days. Head to the National Arboretum for spectacular views and explore forest trees wrapped in bright scarves for the season.

You can also indulge at the Truffle Festival - either enjoy the tasty morsels in dishes around town or head to a nearby truffle farm and follow a truffle dog on a hunt. Many venues boast cosy open fireplaces - try and nab prime position right in front and settle in with a glass of local red wine. For delegates who want to extend their stay, it’s a short 2.5-hour trip south to the ski fields.

SPRING

When spring has sprung, the place to be in Canberra is Commonwealth Park, where more than one million flowers bloom in unison for the month-long Floriade, Australia’s biggest celebration of spring.

With the weather warming up, it’s a great time to get outdoors. Take your picnic out onto Lake Burley Griffin with a self-drive GoBoat or take things slow and rent a colourful paddle boat, each painted to represent a different national institution. And a short drive from town, the ACT’s picturesque national parks provide endless hiking opportunities.

CANBERRA REGION

Canberra boasts an enviable location, close to everything and right in the heart of some of the most picturesque places in Australia. When you hold your event in Canberra, delegates can visit the award-winning Canberra District Wine Region, and the pristine countryside of the Alpine region, or delight in the rural charm of the Southern Tablelands, and the warm hospitality and fresh seafood of the South Coast.

COOL CLIMATE WINE REGION

It was a few scientists who decided to plant the initial vines in the surrounds of Canberra many decades ago. These days, the Canberra District Wine Region is home to 140 vineyards and more than 30 boutique cellar doors, and has firmly cemented a reputation for creating some of Australia’s best cool-climate wines. The climate creates the perfect conditions for both shiraz and riesling, which are the area’s standout varietals, but there are plenty of lesser-known varieties and blends to explore. Taste your way through wines at Contentious Character in Wamboin, or delegates can sip and sleep amongst the vines at Tallagandra Hill Winery in Gundaroo.

For a VIP group, head to Shaw Wines in Murrumbateman for a dining and tasting experience in the private cellar dining room.

SOUTHERN TABLELANDS

Take a short drive from Canberra City in any direction and you’ll stumble across charming country towns steeped in history. You can shop for locally crafted goods, explore art, or settle in for home-made treats in Yass or Bungendore.

Taste your way around the local wines, chocolates, and other delicacies in Murrumbateman, feel like you’ve stepped back in time in the quaint town of Braidwood, or be amazed by 400-million-year-old rock formations in the caverns of Wombeyan Caves.

NATIONAL PARKS AND NATURE RESERVES

Canberra is known as the bush capital for a reason – no matter where you are, green spaces or nature reserves are never far away.

Close to town, a short but heart-pumping hike up Mount Ainslie or Black Mountain will reward you with panoramic views over the capital in every direction. A bit further afield, Namadgi National Park and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve offer spots for walking, biking, fishing, animal spotting or exploring archaeological sites dating back over 21,000 years.

Nearby, delegates can also experience a tour of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, which forms part of NASA’s Deep Space Network.

ALPINE ADVENTURES

Just 2.5 hours drive south of Canberra, Australia’s Alpine region is a must-visit for snow enthusiasts, with some of the best skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the country across the slopes of Perisher, Thredbo, Guthega, Charlotte Pass and the family-friendly Selwyn Snowfields.

But there’s also plenty to do once the snow melts. It’s an area flush with world-class mountain biking trails, crystal clear streams for fishing, and untouched bushland to discover on horseback. For those keen to explore on foot and enjoy the crisp mountain air, head out on a hunt for wildflowers, or tackle Australia’s highest peak and hike to the top of Mount Kosciuszko. Afterwards, take a dip at the natural thermal pool at the caves of Yarrangobilly.

For events and boutique accommodation, Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is a picturesque place for delegates to meet, work, or unwind.

CANBERRA SOUTH COAST

Take a step back from a busy conference program with a trip to the south coast, just two hours’ drive from Canberra.

Stretching from Jervis Bay, which is a territory that is part of the ACT, right down the Sapphire Coast, it’s a region of unspoilt coastline, and an undeniably relaxed pace. Here delegates can indulge in fresh, local oysters, meander through historic villages, swim at white sandy beaches, whale watch from the shore, and experience Indigenous culture. The area boasts more than 30 national parks, and marine and nature reserves offering an idyllic spot to reconnect with nature.

For a conference venue with a difference, the architecturally designed Willinga Park at Bawley Point offers sophisticated spaces with a leafy outlook.

The building was designed as a journey through history, from the forecourt which represents the Dreaming and Australia’s ancient beginnings, to the majestic Marble Foyer, which represents the nation’s history of democratic traditions, to the Members’ Hall and its reflective pool which symbolically prevents any single person from standing at the centre of power.

Inside its walls lies a collection of unique spaces which play host to a diverse range of events—from business breakfasts to grand gala dinners.

From the majestic Great Hall to intimate alcoves, Australian Parliament House is home to 10 versatile and striking spaces suitable for a range of events—whether you’re curating an experience for 20 or 1,000.

For us, it’s about sourcing the best seasonal produce from local suppliers and bringing a taste of Australia to your table. Award-winning Executive Chef David Learmonth leads an in-house culinary team that is passionate about utilising local produce and native ingredients to create an unforgettable dining experience.

When you host an event in this celebrated building, you open up a world of exclusive experiences.

You can go deeper with specialist tours of the building’s architecture and art or its Indigenous history, and enjoy behind-the-scenes access to areas including the kitchens, workshops, and gardens. Admire acclaimed works of art, stroll through superbly manicured gardens and courtyards, marvel over intricate architectural details, and explore curated collections at the Parliament Shop.

From stylish formal halls to intimate alcoves perfect for business lunches, Australian Parliament House offers a variety of venue solutions. Let us deliver an unforgettable dining experience for you in Australia’s most iconic building.

MURAL HALL

THEATRE AND THEATRE FOYER

An excellent venue for presentations, conferences and film screenings as it offers fully tiered seating. The adjoining Theatre Foyer provides the ideal area for conference registration, refreshment breaks, buffet lunches and cocktail parties.
