Canberra enters 2021 with a sense of optimism. 2020 delivered its fair share of challenges, with COVID-19 impacting communities across the globe. Yet, Canberra’s resilience and effective health response has ensured our city continues to be a safe and vibrant place to visit as we focus on our economic recovery.

OFFICIAL WELCOME
Canberra is a world city, Australia’s capital and an exciting place to do business. It’s a city bustling with innovation. Cutting-edge researchers, Nobel Prize winners, federal politicians, innovative thinkers, artists, media figures and business leaders all call our great city home. It’s this mix of interesting people that makes Canberra a city of knowledge, culture and influence – a city that visitors feel and remember. This 2021 Meeting Planners Guide is focused on recovery and a belief that Canberra as a planned and congestionfree city is the place where domestic planners will bring their future business events, offering a controlled return to business activity. Canberra is now more connected through increased air routes around Australia, and we anticipate our prime location between major population centres will position us as a hybrid meeting location of choice. We’re a dynamic city, abundant with prestigious establishments and national treasures such as the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia, and Australian Parliament House. Our national story is held within their walls, making them ideal places to host conferences and events.
Canberra continues to forge its reputation as Australia’s powerhouse of information and justify its title as the ‘Knowledge Capital’. The city is home to five of Australia’s top-ranking universities and a range of research centres. You’ll quickly discover that the city is ever evolving. Popular precincts, such as NewActon, Civic, Braddon and Kingston buzz with activity. Pop-up stores, award-winning architecture, lively brewpubs, cultural festivals, music and public art are at the heart of our city, which has something to offer everyone. An advantage of holding your event in a well-designed city the size of Canberra is the ease of movement and connectivity. People within Canberra’s business events community take pride in working collaboratively to deliver on your business events outcomes, where planners and delegates can simply achieve more. With the help of the Canberra Convention Bureau team, you can access all of Canberra’s unique offerings to design an event program that will inform, entertain, inspire and impress. Our capital is already returning to the positivity stemming from a well-managed confident world city, and we look forward to sharing it with you in person.

ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
CANBERRA: ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY With the events industry worldwide adapting to an ever-changing landscape, Canberra is well positioned for meeting planners looking to book inspiring, inperson events that put the safety of their delegates first. With plentiful open spaces that are congestionfree, Canberra offers highly controllable event environments, advanced contract tracing systems, and ease of delegate movement – all-important attributes to reinstate confidence for meeting planners considering Canberra as their next event destination. Located between Sydney and Melbourne, the nation’s capital is well situated to become a hybrid hub for gathering groups. Canberra venues are equipped with the latest technology to connect your delegates from in-person events to virtual environments.

Further enhancing connectivity, Canberra Airport has welcomed new airline partners and launched a range of new flight routes, allowing easy access from capital cities and numerous regional hubs. With a long history of driving innovation, and as home to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN), and Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, the ACT is also leading the way with early investment in new COVID-safe technologies. Smart Badge, a contact tracing and social distancing technology first trialled Australia-wide at the National Convention Centre Canberra, is now available free of charge to meeting planners holding an event in Canberra. Thanks to a leading health response by the ACT Government, Canberra recorded low cases of COVID-19 despite keeping its borders open throughout 2020, placing the nation’s capital in a position to thrive in the years ahead and to see a steady return of conferences, meetings, and events in 2021 and beyond. We look forward to welcoming you and your delegates back to Canberra!

#MEETAGAINCBR
READY TO #MEETAGAINCBR Despite the impact of COVID-19, the Canberra business events industry has been quick to adapt to an ever-changing landscape, and is looking to the future with a blend of innovative technologies and the flexibility to suit the needs of any event.
“The National Convention Centre Canberra (NCCC) has a tailored approach when working with clients and suppliers in minimising risk around the running of events. We are entrepreneurial in spirit, and highly proactive in driving revenue and building confidence within a COVID-safe event environment. The NCCC spearheaded the trials of brand-new social distancing technology (Smart Badge), with the aim of regaining confidence back into the business events sector. This, coupled with an array of COVID-safe venue practices, measures and wellbeing options, have all been embedded at the NCCC to provide the confidence and reassurance in hosting and attending ‘COVID-creative’ Canberra events with peace of mind.” - Carla Huetter, National Convention Centre Canberra (NCCC)

“We’ve been working really hard with other destinations and airline partners, and we’ve launched a number of new routes, which provide opportunities for people to connect into Canberra with ease. We now have direct flights to Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Hobart. We’re constantly in discussions with the airlines about new routes and new opportunities - it’s all about helping work with the airlines to drive connectivity. We’re also a distribution point for people coming into Canberra, and we like to think we set the tone for the city. In the terminal, we have two new restaurants and a coffee shop, plus the new Capital Brewing bar with a focus on local. There are also plans to open a Canberra providore outlet so you can buy local produce right in the terminal.” - Michael Thomson, Canberra Airport
#MEETAGAINCBR
“SBX is working hard to reinvigorate the exhibition and events arm of the industry. We have formed working groups in collaboration with other local suppliers to develop public events for 2021. This is an ongoing exercise and will be a part of the push to re-open the Canberra business events industry. More specifically SBX is working on a new food and wine expo to drive destination recovery and revive the tourism industry, and we are also looking at several other shows during the course of 2021.” - Peter Mercer, SBX System Built Exhibitions
“Like all event managers in 2020, we had to quickly find a way to operate in this new world. While most of our 2020 events were rolled over to 2021, we converted one into a completely virtual event in November. Just like we were adapting quickly, we found participants were still finding their feet with how to meet virtually, so we introduced a team of ‘tech elves’ who were on hand to pose a question if there was a stall in conversation or to keep things moving - almost teaching people how to do it on the go. As much as we can’t wait to get back to completely in-person events, based on demand and given the ever-changing nature of things, we’ve created a way to ensure events can go ahead by offering hybrid in-person and virtual events.” - Tricia Hopkins, Kaigi Conferencing and Events
“Pialligo Estate is a 55-acre working farm and hospitality destination on the banks of the Molonglo River, with 22 acres of vineyards, orchards, olive groves, and vegetable gardens, providing clients with paddock-to-plate experiences, wide expanses and plenty of open-air space suited to all events. We have seven distinct dining spaces, and when restrictions came in, we were quick to think outside the box and tweak operations to ensure all venues were versatile, adaptable, and interchangeable. We’ve also diversified our offering by adding an additional marquee down by the river. With Executive Chef Mark Glenn at the helm and a team of dedicated and highly awarded events sales and coordination professionals diligently informed on the latest health advice, we have a can-do attitude and are always adapting to ensure we can service every market, with memorable, safe and highquality events.”
“With many events cancelled during 2020, we turned what was a quiet period into an opportunity to train and upskill, particularly in virtual meeting technologies and live streaming. A couple of years ago it was really hard work to sell the concept of live streaming a meeting to a client, and now it’s a given. With some government departments unable to access certain video streaming services on their network, we developed new solutions using 4G internet technologies to seamlessly facilitate virtual meetings with external stakeholders. It’s also been great to get back to working on in-person events and creating spectacular productions, which is what we do best.” - Darren Russell, Elite Event Technology

20
Image above: National Convention Centre Canberra (NCCC)
The device not only registers your delegates contact-free via QR code and maps their location within the set area of an event, it also allows for instant contact tracing capabilities, meaning meeting planners can rapidly respond in the event of a COVID-19 risk. Smart Badge can also assist in maintaining social distancing, by alerting wearers through a discrete vibration, flash or a beep when they are within 1.5 metres of one another. The Smart Badge technology is available free of charge to meeting planners with a confirmed event in Canberra.

“After a highly successful national convention in Canberra for 2013, feedback was extremely positive to host the 2021 event there once again. Canberra Convention Bureau prepared a full proposal covering all aspects of our consideration and the bid was a standout option for us, so the location was quickly agreed. Following this agreement, CCB has assisted with venue, delegate accommodation and social program options, connected us with Federal Government, among other contacts, and is assisting our path through COVID with, among other aspects, their Smart Badge technology. CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS
CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS
From long summer evenings to invigorating winter days, and beautifully temperate spring and autumn, Canberra enjoys four distinct seasons, all with their lot of activities and experiences. SUMMER
WINTER
Conferencing during Canberra summer means your delegates can go straight from the conference venue to outdoor dining in one of the city’s many summer-friendly restaurants and bars, taking full advantage of the balmy weather that extends well into the evening.
A glass of wine in front of a fireplace after a day of outdoor activities – this quintessentially winter scene is part and parcel of a Canberra winter.
A GoBoat adventure on Lake Burley Griffin, an e-scooter ride through the streets of Braddon or a bush walk in one of Canberra’s many nature reserves make for an active conference program, while sports enthusiasts can catch a game of cricket at Manuka Oval. Escape the heat with a visit to Canberra’s museums, art galleries and national institutions to brush up on your culture and browse the exhibitions on display.
From the winter-long and region-wide Canberra Truffle Festival, to snowfields a mere 2.5 hours from the city, and blockbuster exhibitions in our national institutions, winter in Canberra is as exciting and vibrant as our warmer seasons. AFL and NRL fans are well served during the Canberra winter, with plenty of home games taking place at Manuka Oval and GIO Stadium. Rug up and get ready to cheer our local teams, or entertain clients in the venues’ corporate boxes for an elevated hospitality experience.
AUTUMN
SPRING
Arguably the prettiest of seasons in the capital, autumn plunges Canberra’s stunning cityscape into hues of red, gold, ochre and crimson as our exotic trees transform and paint the city with vibrant tones.
Spring really does, well, spring in Canberra, with longer and warmer days making a comeback and bringing a sense of renewal to the city.
Autumn is also a season packed with exciting events, including Enlighten, Canberra’s signature festival of illuminations, and the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, mesmerising all who look up to the sky to see hot air balloons floating graciously from early morning.
If you want to incorporate fitness into your event program, spring is the perfect season for bushwalking, running, mountain biking and cycling around the lakes dotting the Canberra region.
EXPERIENCE CANBERRA
For the more active delegates, the Canberra Times Marathon Festival takes place in April, with distances to suit all levels and styles of runners.
Australia’s month-long celebration of spring, Floriade, showcases flowers in bloom across the city and offers an ever-expanding program of in-person and virtual workshops, entertainment and displays.

Feast on handmade chocolates at Robyn Rowe Chocolates in Murrumbateman, settle in for a cosy winery lunch at Contentious Character, or marvel at the 400-million-year-old rock formations in the caverns of Wombeyan Caves. History buffs can catch a glimpse of mid-19th century town life at Braidwood, Bungendore or Yass, and reconnect with early rural Australia, while art enthusiasts will be delighted with the many galleries, shops and design studios throughout the tablelands.

With 70% of the ACT covered in pure open space, parkland and nature reserves, here is the chance for your delegates to experience Canberra’s remote alpine bush at its finest. Just a short drive from the city, your group will enjoy spectacular views, walking and biking trails, fishing spots and animal encounters at Namadgi National Park and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Team building activity options are plentiful, including bush walks, cycling tours and wildlife spotting. Learn about the rich Aboriginal history of the Ngunnawal people with a visit to archaeological sites dating back over 21,000 years or a walk on the Birrigai Time Trail to the Birrigai Rock Shelter, one of the oldest rock shelters in the region.

ALPINE ADVENTURES
SOUTH COAST
Whether it’s hurtling down the hillside on skis or a mountain bike, wandering amongst the wildflowers or casting a line for fresh river trout, your group will love the fresh mountain air and stunning scenery of Australia’s Alpine region. Best of all, it’s practically on Canberra’s doorstep, only 2.5 hours along Kosciuszko Alpine Way or Snowy Valley Way
A scenic two-hour drive is all that stands between your delegates and the delights of whale watching, kayaking, swimming, surfing or simply lazing on a beautiful beach. Discover long, secluded, and sheltered beach coves, heritage towns and unspoilt coastline that are the perfect antidote to a busy conference program.
Hike Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak, take a scenic drive through Cooma and Jindabyne, or experience the year-round beauty of our alpine region at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa, where event planners will find meeting spaces, boutique accommodation and team activations.
From Jervis Bay, an annexe of the ACT, down to the Sapphire Coast, the region offers delegates a chance to relax and recharge, or to get active with a variety of experiences on offer.
Snow enthusiasts can hit the slopes at Perisher, Thredbo, Guthega, Charlotte Pass and the family-friendly Selwyn Snowfields, while summer visitors will be spoilt for choice with hiking and moutain biking trails.
CANBERRA REGION
CANBERRA REGION
Take a surfing lesson, try stand-up paddle boarding, snorkel in the crystal-clear waters, or chuck a line from a fishing charter. Hungry? Try some freshly shucked oysters from Narooma, Merimbula or the Clyde River, or visit the Bodalla Dairy Shed for all your cheese and dairy cravings. 53
