In 1778 George Washington dence Day on the Fourth of July celebrated by giving his soldiers every year, but actually, July 4th extra rations of rum, and by the is not the day we declared our end of the 1700’s many large cities began holding Independence independence. Day celebrations, complete with The American Revolution started picnics that stretched for city in April 1775, and Continental blocks and dances and parades. Congress actually decided to declare independence on July 2, Since then we Americans have 1776. Thomas Jefferson wrote celebrated in much the same the first draft of the Declaration way….fireworks, parades, conof Independence in June 1776, certs held to show our pride in and it was actually signed on being American. We often forget, August 2, 1776. The Declaration however, what Independence was delivered to Great Britain in Day truly means: when a brave November 1776. So why do we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th? Because The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, after Jefferson submitted it to them on July 2. After making a few minor changes, the Declaration was approved on July 4. It was dated on that day, even though it wasn’t signed until August, so that’s the date printed on the original Declaration, and that’s the date associated most closely with it. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. However, Independence Day was not even recognized as a national holiday until 1870, although it had been celebrated for many years prior to that. It was finally declared a Federal holiday in 1941. During the summer of 1776 our first colonists celebrated the independence of the new nation by holding mock funerals for King George III, symbolizing the end of Britain’s hold on America. By Christina Marie Nunez Looking for something family friendly to do on a Saturday night? Check out Pitty’s bbq car show that happens every 4th Saturday of the month at the airplane located at 240 N. Not only were we invited we were welcomed with a friendly smile from the owner Joe but also got to see his wife Cassie make her rounds and greet everyone that she came across with a smile as

At this time, they have been able to collect donations totaling over $87,000, including this year’s total check of $16,200. It’s great to hear from members of the Visalia Rescue Mission staff about how far a yearly amount like that goes for them, and more importantly the difference they are able to make in the lives of those that they help. You never know if you or a family member will ever need their assistance but it’s comforting to know they are there to help our community. So if you’ve seen or heard about this great benefit run and haven’t had a chance to donate, or attend the day of fun, don’t miss out next year!

THE JET BOWL
IS BACK by Jj Cox
You heard that right. The Lemoore Jet Bowl is back. It’s time to celebrate nearly seven decades of racing in Lemoore. T-Zone Promotions proudly presents the Inaugural Jet Bowl Classic, July 6-7, 2018, at Lemoore Raceway. Legends were born, and legacies were made at the old Jet Bowl. This all new two day event is dedicated to paying homage to the magnificent drivers, members, and fans who built the foundation racing stands on to this day in the valley. For those who spent their Saturday Nights at the Jet Bowl, in any capacity, this race is dedicated to you. Complete with a retro theme, history on display, and a discount to walk through the gate for wearing white pants, (once mandated to get into the pits), the Jet Bowl is set to be alive and well, again. “It’s time to relive the glory days,” according to T-Zone Promotions. “This is your chance to come pay tribute to the past, while witnessing the stars of the future.”
In addition, Lemoore Racing Enterprises, founding club of the Jet Bowl and Lemoore Raceway, is set to induct its sixth Hall of Fame Class. Saturday night, July 7, nine individual Lemoore Racing legacies will be permanently cemented in history with their enshrinement into the Lemoore Raceway Hall of Fame. The all new event is dedicated to shedding light on the legacies made on 18th and Iona; but don’t expect to be sitting in a history class.
