19th Annual California Rendezvous

his year marks the 19th year the California Rendezvous will be held in the valley. How did this event come to be and why is it so successful? The California Rendezvous started in 2001. The first event was held at Pioneer Village in Selma, CA. Kent and Debbie Mortimer, owners of Renegade Classics Outlet Store in Fresno, wanted to put on a major bike event. The east coast had the Harley Rendezvous which was a very successful and wild, old school biker get together. Kent had done work with Easyriders magazine and was familiar with their bike shows and motorcycle rodeos. Kent stated, “from the beginning, we knew exactly what type of event we wanted to bring to the valley. The kind all bikers would feel comfortable at and enjoy having a day of fun with bikes and girls.” The event was held at Pioneer Village for two years then moved to Lindy’s Landing on the Kings River. The event outgrew that venue in one year and was moved to Hobbs Grove. After Hobbs Grove the event was held at Coombs Ranch. A beautiful venue right on the river. Unfortunately, the golf course next door complained about all the bikers and noise problems. Next the event went to the Madera Fairgrounds where it was held for several years. Three of the fair board members were bikers and welcomed the event with open arms. Over the years the event has grown as different activities have been added. At the Madera Fairgrounds stunt shows were added. Jason Pullen performed his amazing stunts every year for the

last 13 years. Vendors from around California took note of the show and started to attend. Famous bike builders seen on TV brought in their custom build creations for people to see in person. The ride-in bike show has gotten bigger with more categories and trophies. A stereo thump-off and loud pipes contest was added. The weenie bite contest, a classic favorite at biker events, is held at the Rendezvous. Body painting by world famous body painter Pashur is always a hit. A lot of hot girls are on stage to play the different games like pickle lickin’, the jello shot game, the frozen T-shirt and wet T-shirt contest, capped off with the now famous Miss Rendezvous bikini contest! To make any biker event complete you have to have live music, food vendors and Budweiser beer. This year the Rendezvous will feature celebrity actor Frankie Loyal who plays the role of Hank “Tranq” Loza on the popular television series Mayans M.C. His “El Pacificador” character is charged with the security of the club and keeping the peace while laying down the law. Tranq as the Sergeant-at-Arms of the club is menacing and a real bad hombre. Loyal has proven that he can act and he does ride. He rides his motorcycle to the Mayans set each day. In an interview with FX television station Frankie said, “I get on my motorcycle and I go on long rides. I usually prefer to be alone when I ride, but sometimes I ride out with my closest friends. We’ll take a ride along the coast, Malibu, Topanga Canyon, maybe even the desert. Riding helps keep

So, Frankie Loyal is the perfect celebrity guest for the 19th Annual California Rendezvous Motorcycle Show. He will be available for a meet and greet and to sign autographs and take pictures. This is a great opportunity to meet a real celebrity and get some photos to post on social media and make your friends jealous. Funny man stand-up comedian Key Lewis will be doing shows and helping out at the microphone. R a d i o celebrity Koyote from 95.7 the Fox will be hosting the main stage games. Live music will be provided by The Aviators rock band. Sandra “Smoothness” Chaney will be running bike games and getting up to her own brand of shenanigans. Jimmy from Wax Attack is bringing the foam gun again this year so the girls can get super clean! You will be able to watch Pashur, the body painter doing a masterpiece of art on a model he’s bringing from LA. Be sure to get a picture with Ruby when he’s finished painting her. One of the things that has contributed to the success and longevity of the California Rendezvous is that all bikers are welcome and invited to attend. Veteran bikers, Christian bikers, outlaw bikers, bikers that ride anything from a sport bike to a heavy cruiser, lady bikers, white bikers, black bikers, and Martian bikers, anyone and everyone that rides a motorcycle is made to feel welcome at the Rendezvous. This is a pure motorcycle event. It is not mixed with hot rods or mini-trucks. This is a day for motorcycle enthusiasts who appreciate beautiful custom bikes to get together for

some fun.

The Rendezvous will be held this year at Cherry Avenue Auction grounds. Cherry Avenue is 60 acres so the event has plenty of room to grow even bigger! Over the last few years the grounds have been upgraded and improved. There is lots of permanent shade for the vendor area, a beautiful tree lined space for the bike show, shaded picnic tables for lunch time, thousands of newly paved parking spaces close to the event, on ground ATMs, and plenty of space for our big sponsors and bike builders. Cherry Avenue Auction Grounds is easy to get to one block off Highway 41 just south of Fresno. If you want to enter your bike in the ride-in bike show, you need to have it there between 9 am and 11 am. You can purchase tickets at the gate starting at 10 am or you can pre-buy tickets at one of the ticket stops that includes Mathews Harley-Davidson in Fresno, Visalia Harley-Davidson, Wilson’s Powersports in Madera and Renegade Classics in Modesto. When you get your tickets at one of these stops you will get a free event T-shirt. You can also buy your ticket online at www.carendezvous.com. Thank you for your support in making the California Rendezvous a success the past 18 years. With your participation the Rendezvous will continue to grow for many years to come!

JACKSON’S ROADHOUSE A NEW ERA bunch of friends over the years, she and her husband have found it difficult to effectively manage the business since their move out of state.

Last month I briefly mentioned the Roadhouse, a well-known and iconic Biker Bar located just a mile or so from Table Mountain Casino on the corner of Auberry and Millerton Road. Some people still refer to it as “Sheri’s” but the fact is it has been owned by Rhonda Haines for the last 5 years. The rural tavern was actually opened over 50 years ago and is considered an historical landmark. Sheri put it on the map as a fun biker bar and Rhonda continued the legacy and added numerous structural improvements including firepits, shade awnings, dance floor and lots more.

With a bitter-sweet tone Rhonda then introduced the soon-to-be new owners who were standing near. Brian and Kelly Hillman are residents of Oakhurst. Brian owns a successful IT business and Kelly is a Registered Veterinary Technologist by day and on her off time is the lead singer of “Stranded” from Redondo Beach and “What Comes Next,” her new mountain area band -- featuring Brian as the drummer. In fact, both bands entertained the crowd that day.

April 6th marked another milestone for the Roadhouse. To the casual visitor it looked a lot like most spring and summer weekends with live music, 150 bikers enjoying a beverage, smoke, BBQ and some laughs. But what made this day different was an unceremonious announcement Roadhouse Rhonda (as I like to just after the band finished playBrian and Kelly are also active call her) has created a mecca for ing. members of the Sierra Shadow biker events over the years. non-bikers from the area. Being musicians, the couple have some really great ideas on how to make the landmark bar a music venue. The Roadhouse name will remain with a small addition. It is now Jackson’s Roadhouse, a name very dear to their hearts. Brian and Kelly were handed the Keys April 22 and look forward to carrying on the Roadhouse tradition which is synonymous with a fun and friendly place to hang out, meet new friends and enjoy the coolest beer in the mountains. A grand opening party will be announced once the dust settles, launching a new era for this amazing historical site.
